Dear Residents and Businesses Welcome to your May edition of Eden Local. My thanks to you for taking the time out to read your local community magazine. The week that this Eden Local is distributed, we also celebrate the launch and distribution of the first Lakes Local publication into Keswick and the area covered by CA12. I am also pleased to say ‘welcome’ to our new readers in Appleby -in-Westmorland and the area covered by CA16. An opening editorial wouldn’t be the same without my thanks to the new and existing advertisers and those local people who do support us by just picking up the magazine. Sam and I have been out and about in the community. Sam has been working on the village feature this month, which is Greystoke (pages 17 to 19). In between working on the new Lakes Local, I have been visiting local farmers and producers in preparation for this month’s focus on local farming. I met up with the Miller family at Penruddock. The first of three parts of this story are on pages 8, 10 and 11. We are still progressing with our Route 66 England project. Sam and I took time out at the office to plot the history of the A66 from Scotch Corner to Cockermouth with Keith Wood. This is a project that cannot be rushed, so we are phasing this in over 2 years. We hope the concept will cover everything there is to know about this historic and scenic route – appealing to all visitors, to local people who have seen this small road develop into a major link across the north of the county. Of course there are people who may have settled in Cumbria in the last 10, 20, 30 or 40 years who still have the urge for discovery. Like me they may not have realised that the A66 used to run from east to west, stopping at Penrith and the main road then to Keswick took you via Greystoke, which was the A594. If you have any information you would like to share about your Route 66, there are more details about this project on page 25. With the launch of Lakes Local now complete, giving your Cumbrian Local publications a distribution of 24,000, delivered in parts of CA4, across CA10, CA11, CA12 and CA16, we are now preparing for the launch of the Border City Local, which we have confirmed with Royal Mail distribution for later in 2012. As the largest growing publication in Cumbria, which isn’t reliant on sales or collection points, just basically any home or business with a letter box, we are expanding our team. If you would like to join our team, the details are on page 31 in our new Classified Jobs Section. And finally, fulfilling popular requests, we have introduced
our first puzzle page. Our thanks to The Pot Place (page 14). At Eden Local, we are always open to new ideas, so please keep them coming. Thank you. Lee Quinn, Editor

Wake up and smell the coffee I love a proper cup of fresh coffee, ideally from freshly ground beans, and that’s a good ordinary but full of flavour and taste coffee. My working morning would not be complete without it, and it’s an opportunity to have a few minutes time to relax. Clients like it too! Penrith has a number of places to relax with a cup of coffee and we now have another coffee shop, via a big name brand. Costa Coffee has a new face in Penrith courtesy of the franchise just opened in the old Bluebell bookshop. Costa’s is apparently the third biggest food and drink chain – so at least on the face of it we have another national taking up retail space in Penrith. Clearly the bigger retail names have the potential for attracting more custom into Penrith and of course everyone has a choice of where they want to eat or drink. But is this the continued homogenisation of Penrith, with the same retail outlets as “Everyanywheretown”? Penrith is applying to become a “Portas Pilot” town, an initiative to give town centres a boost; the bid’s focus will be on (amongst other things) “supporting local shops and businesses” – so that should be a great opportunity to demonstrate the potential of our local Penrith businesses. Here at Full Circle Accountancy we look closely at what
clients’ business do, how they perform and it’s not all down to numbers. Here’s an opportunity for us review your business from top to bottom, identify strengths and weaknesses, discuss and generate new ideas, and help you achieve greater success.

Going to the Eggstream
This month, I have been on the trail once again to catch up with a local farmer and local producer. Whilst we have previously visited two separate locations for this regular article, this month we have put these two concepts together. It was a wind swept day in early April when I met up with Hazel Miller to discuss eggs and her family farm, which she runs with her husband Garry and hands on family of four children. Their main focus is free range eggs. Like many farms, they were knee deep in lambing and they also had a pig with a 12 week old litter.
Laying Hens” Directive made the production of 30 per cent of European egg producers illegal. The Directive bans the use of battery cages for hens and requires at least 750 square centimetres of cage space per hen. Filie Van Bosstreten, the Secretary General of the European Egg Processors Association, thoughts were very much along the lines of, that some European producers, especially medium and small, will completely stop producing eggs.
Why eggs this month? Well, the reason why I was there and chose egg production, was born out of a previous conversation the month before. I was talking cakes with Maggie in the bakery at Sandgate and Maggie explained the price of eggs had risen sharply. With eggs being a key ingredient of many of their products both in the bakery and at Eden House of Cakes, this would mean a rise in cake prices, so I wanted to find out more.
His point is that the EU wants all chicken farms to have so-called “enriched cages,” in which hens are no longer confined to small spaces, and can move around. But farmers say, in his opinion, it is a lot more work and hens tend to excrete waste everywhere. They would also have to train hens to lay eggs in a special nest, another difficult task. I have researched close to a dozen websites covering Eastern and Western Europe and picked up on media spins as well as some key farming association opinions.
I will be presenting many behind the scenes snippets from my meetings with the Miller family which will, I hope give you an idea of what ‘going to work on an egg’ is really all about, but before we look at the producer on our doorstep, I researched outside of Cumbria onto the worldwide web into why the rise had happened in the price of eggs. I discovered much more than, which came first in our chicken and the egg story, which will run, as they do, for more than just a month. There has been much debate about it in the national news and across the European Union. The announcement made from 1st January 2012, meant that the “Welfare of
There have been and there will be more debates surrounding animal welfare, not just with chickens, but the impact of this change in Europe is one of massive adjustment and change. In the UK, an estimated 400 million has been spent on compliance of the new regulations, however, at the start of the year there were 13 EU countries not meeting the new Directive. France and Belgium were struggling to ‘have their cake and eat it’ as French bakeries protested on the increase of eggs in price due to shortages. From our research, the EU issued the Directive in 1999, requiring member states to phase out the use of small so-called battery

place. As with any commodity, the prices can be variable but the reality is the price that farmers are getting at present, is around 14p per dozen but feed prices have risen during 2012 by £70 a tonne. The suggested price by the BFREPA is nearer 20p per dozen.
cages for hens at factory farms. Producers were given until the start of this year to switch to “enriched” cages offering chickens more space, bedding and perches. There are 28,000 egg producers in the EU, around 200 major packing stations (wholesalers) or traders and about 100 egg processors. With battery eggs banned, this has created an egg shortage driving up the price. So how does this leave us in the UK and how will it affect Cumbria? On average, consumers across the EU had to pay 76.5% more for eggs at the end of March, compared with a year earlier, according to EU figures. At the time of writing this article at Easter, there is an egg shortage across Europe, there are pending hose pipe bans commencing in the south and we have snow! Staggeringly, almost 11 billion eggs are consumed in the UK every year. Over 85 per cent of these are produced domestically, with the nation’s 29 million laying hens each laying an average of 314 eggs per year – nearly one per day (British Egg Information Service, website, 2011). However, in a recent report, John Retson, Chairman of the British Free Range Egg Producers’ Association (BFREPA), has called for an increase in the prices paid to egg producers, following reports that some major retailers have been hit by supply shortages. At the close of 2011, the BFREPA predicted a reduction of 12 % in the commercial, free range layers which equates to 2,000,000 layers. The reason behind this is not the change in EU legislation but the problem that egg producers face with the price of eggs in the market
So we have the shortages, due to the EU directive in the week, but the real stinger is the feed rise in price. It’s a global problem coming home to roost here in Cumbria. The price of wheat globally has hit its highest price since September 2007. One of these causes relates to crop failure in the Black Sea region of Russia and the Ukriane. The global shortage coupled with a weak pound, has boosted UK wheat sales overseas. Normally, UK wheat is exported to Europe and North Africa but it is going as far as Thailand and Vietnam. In the domestic market, with higher demands in the production of bio fuels, it’s another hit in a volatile market. So taking all this in to consideration with EU Directives and global wheat markets affecting driving up the price of feed, how does this affect our local producer? Can you help? Buying local, using your local farm shop is all that you need to do. Here is why…… On the shelf at the supermarket this week (7th April 2012) for a half a dozen free range medium eggs, the price is from around £1.70 - that’s 28.3p each. Let’s hold that thought for a moment. This price is calculated from 5 supermarkets online. On the shelf at your local shop, for example Jackson’s Family Butchers, Carleton Farm Shop, Cocklakes Farm Shop, our independent greengrocers ‘Starfruits’ online and your local Penrith Co-operative Society, in Eden, the prices at the time of writing this article were averaging around £1.17. As I write this article, new prices which reflect rises for the following week are already prepared. In the next few weeks there could be more. When this article is in your hand, we could be seeing prices up as much as 15-30p more per half dozen. For current egg prices this is a good link www.theranger.co.uk/eggprices.asp Towards the end of our series on local egg production, we will be looking at egg packing and wholesale, but one clear message here is if you take the mileage out
Chick, chick, chick, chick, chicken lay a little egg for me... The Eglu Go is the simple, stylish, straightforward way to start keeping chickens. It is designed to keep up to four medium chickens and they will be very happy and healthy in their new home. Unit 6 milestone House Penrith Tel: 01768 840378 EdenLocal

of food, it can make a difference. It will make a big difference locally in our economy. So finally, we get to our local family on the farm. It was in 2009 that Hazel and Garry made the investment into to being an egg producer under the Freedom food banner, which is a standard monitored by the RSPCA, applied through a higher welfare food labelling and farm assurance scheme. Like many Cumbria farms and this trend across many families, it’s a balance of shifts and at the peak of lambing, the egg production can’t just be put on hold. It’s a family business. After many years working in Hazels mam’s B & B, it was a total change to be involved with 6,000 Shaver hens! Garry, a plumber by trade, still works at least 3 days a week plumbing. The Miller family, like all egg producers, have been hit with the feed prices. I sat around the table with Hazel discussing what could possibly come next. Their feed comes in 18 ½ tonne loads. The price in 2009 was around £200, so the average £70 increase per tonne this year is a direct hit in poultry farming, but it will impact many businesses, not just the Miller’s family business, hence where our article began at Maggie’s Bakery. I also spoke to Simon, the factory manager at Highgate Turkey’s, who as a local poultry producer, is also seriously affected. It’s something I have mentioned on many occasions when discussing the work involved behind the scenes. Yes the Miller family at Penruddock chose this profession and many may ask the question why. Why every day, even with the best automated system for collecting eggs, would anyone then pack in trays an average of 6,000 eggs a day? I visited on a day when it was snowing. Then two days later it was a warm spring day with lambs skipping about and I took my two girls up to the farm to share in this experience. I got to meet Hazel’s mam, who was helping with the packing. We
met the family pig, its piglets face to face and 6,000 chickens. As Hazel’s mam said ‘isn’t spring just a wonderful time of year for the family’. Seeing the children running around in the sun with the animals enjoying the experience of the outside and new life - what can possibly beat that? It is priceless. Next month, we will be doing an update with the Miller family. We are going to focus more on the Shaver hen and the production from the hens, arriving on the farm, to the eggs being collected by Lakes Free Range Egg Company, who working with many local producers, make many things happen. Meanwhile, if you have got some eggs, have a look at the number on it, then go to egg tracer at www.lakesfreerange.co.uk and you can then see how local your egg is. In keeping what is really down to earth local, we’ll also be looking at the small holding family production of locals that keep their own 4 to 6 hens. Still to come, we will also be discussing types of chicken and habit of chickens, breeding of chickens with Wetheriggs Conservation Centre, so if you’re looking at doing poultry DIY, this is the site link for you www.poultry.allotment.org.uk Importantly, we will be looking at how the free range chickens are benefiting from being free to do what chickens like to do.

It’s only when you start to look at our local villages that you realise just how lucky we are to have an abundance of beautiful ones in the Eden Valley, full of character and very proud villagers with a strong sense of community.
for a pub, I was interested to read inside that the pub got its name because of the strange habit of a former Duke of Norfolk wearing a shoe on one foot and a boot on the other to ease the pain of crippling gout. I wonder if the ale eased the pain too!
People come far and wide to visit Greystokes thriving village store just for the very large eggs which are laid locally, plus lots of other daily reads and local produce. It is also a popular stop on the C2C route as is the picturesque Cycle Cafe.
The final entry is for 2008 and boost’s that the life expectancy in the village is 91.3 years, which makes the village famous for having the second highest life expectancy in England. I can only guess that this is down to lifestyle; there is certainly a lot to keep you busy.
Greystoke has an interesting and somewhat unique history – some factual, some myth but great reading I urge you to call in to The Boot and Shoe, each place mat gives you a brief insight to the trails and tales of the village. It was drawn up by some of the local’s – like I said proud villagers, the entry for 1511 made me chuckle. The Boot and Shoe is an unusual name
Kindly Laura J gave me run down of the top of her head, are you ready for this? These events usually happen in the pub, the village hall or organised by the Greystoke & District Sports Association and are open to everyone not just the village community.

The castle dates back almost 1000 years and had been destroyed and rebuilt on a few occasions, In 1069, Llyulph de Greystoke, (whom Ullswater is named after and local saxon chief), built a series of defensive fortifications in protection for invading scots. But it wasn’t until 1346 that King Edward III gave permission for the building to be castellated and then the castle was fully created.

An inspiring idea from, Ben Mandale the Landlord at the Boot and Shoe. The first concert was held on September 25th 2012 and was organised to raise money for the village church, St Andrews. The event raised some eyebrows at first but was in fact a huge success, an amazing venue, hosted by Stuart Maconie, showcasing 10 bands and solo artist’s the Church That Rocks raised over £2000 and is now set to be an annual event. For more information on this year’s event please contact the Boot and Shoe directly. Greystoke is fabulous village full of fun, with a fantastic community and definitely worth a visit. The Key to Success It is good to advertise a business, but it is always exciting to be in a position where you get to write about the business and share with people what the business is all about, why they do it and how they got started. Eden Local has been working with Monument Locksmiths for six months now. Like me, I hope you enjoy an insight into Monument Locksmiths and the history of how it became what it is today.
What is a Locksmith? Well traditionally a ‘smith’ of any type, is one who shapes metal pieces, often using a forge or mould, into useful objects or to be part of a more complex structure. Locksmithing, as its name implies, is the assembly and designing of locks and their respective keys. Locksmithing began as the science and art of making and defeating locks. A lock being the mechanism that secures buildings, cars, rooms, cabinets, objects, or other storage facilities. A key is often used to open a lock. There are various types of key and various types of locks. The oldest known lock is approximately 4,000 years old and is of an Egyptian make. The earliest known key based lock was built during the Assyrian Empire in Khorsabad near Nineveh about 704 BC. How did Nick become experienced in order to tackle any lock, any type, anywhere and at any time of the day? Nick Balcombe, the man behind the mobile business that is Monument Locksmiths, has been tinkering with locks and keys since he was 15 years old. I took some time out to discuss where it all began and why. As a lad, Nick was intrigued by locks and the mechanisms. For Nick, it started with in 1984 when he started on a Youth Training Scheme working for John Siddle of Sands DIY as it was then. How things change! Nick, after his training joined Althams

when it re located from Burrowgate to the Ullswater Road site, Nick was in the home improvements centre. He was the supervisor for the ironmongery department and it was whilst in this position he set up the in - house locksmith department. Nick moved on to Manage Buckle and Jones in Carlisle. Nick worked in the shop which stocked every key and lock associated with a building, object or door. He wasn’t able to learn what he needed about car locks in the shop and whilst Nick has attended training courses to acquire the skills, knowledge and certification, the auto lock experience was and still is gained in scrap yards in Nicks own time, now that’s dedication. Cars have became more complex with immobilisers and alarms, many that were standard push key and turn, have in more than one way become remote. Taking cars and locks apart was valuable experience for when Nick set up his own mobile locksmiths in 2006. He has set up his mobile workshop with the capability of cutting household keys, mortice keys, padlocks and car keys. He can replace many type’s of lock. With regards to his auto lock service, Monument Locksmiths carry most keys and chips for auto lock replacement, if it’s not in stock it can generally be replaced within days. With much of Nicks work and the 24 hour service that Monument Locksmiths operate, the business continues to grow on its success and the quality of its work undertaken. A keen business man with a passion for his profession Nick understands the key to his success is not only his 29 years of experience, and a hobby of picking locks (all legal!) but his drive to provide the very best in customer service.

Walking in Eden with Keith Wood EdenLocal • 29
Dalemain and Dacre
Following on from last months article in Eden Local about Dalemain with Jane Hasell-McCosh I thought it would be good to go for a walk over the estate. Home to the Hasell family since 1679 Dalemain has a friendly and homely feel and the tranquility of the well-maintained gardens are in stark contrast to the honey pot of nearby Pooley Bridge. The walk up to Dacre passing by Dacre Castle coupled with a visit to Dalemain and its gardens makes a great day out for all ages. 1. Starting from the Dalemain Estate Car Park, walk through the outbuildings around the back of the house into the courtyard. Bear around to the right over the cobbles onto the lane between two walls. The lane heads up to the village of Dacre. Dacre Beck is below on the left. Pass through a gate into the next large field, keeping to the right hand field boundary. Pass through another gate and the track swings around to the right up towards the village. As the track gently rises pass by several farm buildings and then the impressive Dacre Castle, a fourteenth century sandstone walled pele tower, part of the Dalemain estate since 1723. 2. The track emerges onto the road in the middle of Dacre village, before continuing take a detour to visit the churchyard and the famous Dacre Bears. Turn left and head down the quiet road to the valley bottom and Dacre Beck. Cross the beck, pass a picnic area and continue heading up the hill towards Souland Gate. Pass by the Old
Business Eden
Vicarage, an impressive house on the left and continue on this quiet lane over the brow of the hill. 3. The road passes by Soulands Gate farm buildings on the left. Whilst this is a quiet road be alert to any traffic and keep to the right hand side of the road. As the road starts to descend there is a fine view across to Arthurs Pike and Bonscale Pike. 4. The road reaches the busy A592 Penrith to Pooley Bridge road, at the junction a Pubic Footpath sign leads to a path through a red sandstone stile. Go over the style to pick up the footpath taking you through the fields over Flusco Hill and West Park and back to Dalemain. 5. As there is no access across the front of the house, a short walk along the road is necessary. At the bottom of the last field before reaching Dalemain cross over a wooden stile next to an iron gate and onto the road. Turn left, crossing over the ornamental bridge over Dacre Beck and walk next to the road for a hundred yards in front of the house. All that remains is to head back up the drive to return to the Estate Car Park. For full details of the route with map and photographs are in “ Boot up Ullswater”, which can be found in many local outlets, internet shops or directly from the author at: www.keithwoodphotography.co.uk

And Finally...... It has been a busy month pulling two magazines together but as always Lee pushes forward to achieve for what some would seem unachievable. There is often thanks given to you the readers and the many businesses that support Eden Local, and well deserved the thanks is, but I’d like to add one to the list and that is to Lee, thank you for having the vision, creativity and ideas that have helped so many local businesses and thank you creating such a great magazine (yes I may be biased but I lose count of how many times a week I get positive feedback about Eden Local).
Poland and the Ukraine between 8th June and 1st July. Come on England, please...

The club provides a very special service, a free meal every week to people in the community referred to them by GP’s, Age UK or Social Services. Before I sign off for this month I just thought I would let you know how we have moved things on here in the office, the printing of your Eden Local is actually happening a whole month a head so if you want to book advertising space for your business, event to recruit or to share your ideas for print, by the time your will be reading this I will be in the final stages of producing June’s issue and booking for July – it’s time to plan ahead.
So with another issue under our belt what is in store next month? We will be spending some more time with the Millers, and preparing for all the activity that June will bring. Let’s hope we get the beginnings of a great summer as good weather will just it all top off. We have the Jubilee, the Olympic torch passing through the town; the UK relay begins on 19th May and passes through Appleby then Penrith on Have a great May and thank you all once 20th June on route to Carlisle.
