Every Family Needs a Farmer
Chris Tattersall of The Wool Room being interviewed on the Morning Show by Nigel Peacock. A global food revolution is underway. Consumers are starting to recognise the importance of soil to human health. Soil that is alive with microbes and insects is rich in nutrients and provides the basis for healthy food, quality wool and leather. Every Family Needs a Farmer is an invitation to families to achieve quality of life by using their purchasing power to support farmers who use practices that regenerate soil.
On the 4th of November, local company, 3LM, held a conference called, Every Family Needs A Farmer, at the Penrith Golf Club, attended by people from all across the UK, and as far away as the Netherlands. In attendance from Cumbria were a number of farmers, a vicar, representatives from the Lake District National Park Authority and Brantwood. The conference opened with Graham Harvey, the agricultural editor for the Archers, who gave an inspiring historical overview of agriculture. He explained the power of storytelling to bring about needed change, and has been the driving force behind the Archers experimenting with new ways of farming that actually regenerate soil. It then shifted to Rebecca Hosking, a farmer in Devon, who spoke about the economic benefits of regenerative farming. So far this year she has spent only £125 on diesel for her 175-acre farm, with 1,000 sheep. How did she reduce her use of fuel to virtually nil? By practicing “holistic planned grazing” she doesn’t need to use chemicals, barn her animals in winter, make hay or silage, spread muck, use heavy machinery, wean her lambs, or supplement with purchased feed. Moreover, she makes £30 a fleece, 10 times the norm, because of the high quality of her wool, and the organic label.

their sheep. By raising prices, The Wool Room hopes to attract many more farmers to learn “holistic planned grazing” so they can supply quality wool, grown on pastures where sheep are regenerating soil.

The same wool blanket can keep one partner warm while it keeps the other partner cool, thereby improving the quality of sleep for both. When asthmatic children switch from synthetic bedding to wool bedding their symptoms often subside or completely go away.
The Wool Room has successfully raised the purchasing cost of their category of wool by 300% over the past 5 years, and intends to raise it another 300%. Why would a manufacturer do such a crazy thing? Because they know the price for wool is too low. Many farmers no longer sell their wool, and don’t invest in growing quality wool because they don’t earn enough money to cover the cost of shearing

your Eden Local I suddenly got that feeling on 3rd November that Christmas isn’t far away and after the rekindled spirits of Halloween and family and friends Guy Fawkes gatherings, I realised it might never be the same, as my eldest daughter isn’t really into the pumpkins and guy making any longer. My nan, at 92 with her sparkler and her grandchildren, was a wonderful sight! I’m looking forward to Christmas, but my thoughts are shared probably with many parents who have that feeling in the pit of their stomach, when they suddenly realise that their children are looking more like grown-ups each day and they are sometimes more independent than ourselves. Time with them now is more precious than ever. Was it our last Halloween and November 5th altogether as a family I wonder? Welcome to your November edition of the Eden Local, which marks the start of the 7th year of the community magazine. A recap follows a few pages on and at the time of print this month, there are quite a few stories out there. With my presenting at Eden FM, I find that I am really up to date with a local news as it comes in and goes on air almost immediately. Just back from a trip to Appleby to host a ‘People in the Parish’ show that is part of an Eden District Council initiative with Eden FM, the ‘Communication in the Community’ show is broadcast every Tuesday from 2 to 4pm. Prior to the week before, the once a month ‘on the road radio show’, I visit the location and talk to local people and local businesses. The idea behind it is giving people an opportunity to have a voice. The Eden FM radio caption, ‘Your Voice, Your Choice in the Community’ has underpinned a lot of what it stands for since it was

launched and it also celebrates its 5th anniversary of when it switched on for the first time with a trial short-term four week licence on 25th November 2011. I never set out with the idea that local news was to be a big part of my life, but with a passion for communication and the need for people to know what is going on, or at least have the choice of knowing what goes on now and potentially in the future, is very important. You can look outside of the county, but closer to home we all need to know and understand why things change. In the local news, the bus cuts continue. I say continue because whilst the most recent bus route under threat, the 563 Kirkby Stephen to Penrith could disappear, it’s not the first time it’s been cut. Eden FM contacted Cumbria County Council for an update on the 563 bus service which is due to finish in November. A spokesperson for Cumbria County Council said: “Grand Prix Coaches have applied to extend the service to the end of the Christmas term (December 16), to allow more work to be done to find an alternative operator. This is subject to agreement from the Traffic Commissioner for a Short Notice restoration of service. We are aware that work is being done at a local level to encourage other operators to investigate the route but no concrete proposals have emerged at this point.” What happens next? Well a few years ago this service was cut back. The Sunday buses stopped on this route and the Saturday services after 3.15 pm stopped from Penrith. When I was in Alston last month, I met with students from Samuel Kings School. There are a lot of things young people wish for; one is to be able to travel, not around the world, just around in the area where they live. Rural isolation isn’t about profit; I believe it’s about all three tiers of local government working together to deliver a transport service which means not making a profit, but delivering a service which appears in many strategies in council plans. The future for young people in Cumbria should include retention of its young people today and in

tomorrow’s plans. It shouldn’t be just a great place for a holiday, it should a great place to grow up, live and discover. Everyone needs to move around. Young people need to be independent; businesses need local people to be able to work in the towns 7 days a week. How can apprenticeship places be filled if the transport isn’t there I am hoping and supporting a simple concept and that is I hope we need to keep the villages and towns open for business. The cost is one to be shared and this should be between parish, district and county council. It is a cost, but it’s an essential way of life and much needed independence in the community. It would be an idea for the group of people involved in making decisions, to include people without cars or unable to drive. Interesting, recently a survey has been put out by the Castle Park Development Group in association with Eden District Council. It is working on plans to restore the park to its former glory with exciting things to do and see. It was disappointing to note that the survey was only open to people over the age of 18. Was another opportunity missed with the interaction of the future of the community to be involved in it future? With a number of local issues facing us, there is a need to know if we can or whether we are required to make a valid contribution in where we are today and about our future that is more than just tomorrow and that the pathway for future generations is clear. The boundaries are changing to make constituencies more equal. As a radio station, Eden FM will be on the road on Monday 5th December for the whole day transmitting from towns and villages live that were affected by the floods. There will not be many people that will read this article that were not affected over the weekend that Storm Desmond hit Cumbria. My story is one in thousands. At 4.30pm on Friday 4th December, I left Appleby Creamery heading for Penrith. The River Eden was high. As I came up the A66, the fields to the left of the carriageway, normally used by Carleton Farm, were already starting to be covered by water from the River Eamont just before the Kemplay roundabout.
Bridge; seeing the skies above full of lights travelling around the Eden Valley, the reports coming in, it is something that I found hard to describe when I was interviewed by radio stations in the south who wanted the real news of what was happening in the community. It was hard because I had never witnessed anything like it before. It was bad. It also came very close to being much worse if that is

Year 7 What started out as an idea to launch a community radio station that was posted through doors in November 2010, the Eden Local Community magazine has now moved in to its 7th year. The main cover title of Cumbrian Local Publications Ltd.
Every year when we make it into another, I reflect how, as a small family business and publication company it set out from nothing and in a very competitive market it has developed a share of the market place in local media. Thank you to local support from businesses, voluntary writers and my long standing friend in design Chris Miller who worked on my first regional publication back in November 2007 who has designed all 88 publications for The Eden Valley, including the trials we had back in 2012 with the Lakes Local and Border City Times. I am more that pleased that the Eden local and requests for assistance in producing other publications has always been constant I just wish I had the time to fit in more. It’s a real positive to attract new enquiries and new business every month. One again you will see several here this month and then have regular businesses that have supported Eden Local and other publications from its first year and still support it now. So thank you to a lot of people for believing and investing in your local community magazine that is Eden Local, a big thank you to the many people I see when I am out delivering, which is generally around Scaws in Penrith who are always happy to take the magazine out of my hand.

Miscellany ~ December This is an old recipe from my mum’s recipe book – weights are in imperial as this is how it is written – sorry! A light fruit cake which makes a nice change from a very rich traditional Christmas cake.

2 oz cherries 2 oz Brazil nuts 2 oz glace pineapple 2 eggs 6 oz plain flour 6 oz butter 6 oz sugar 3 oz ground almonds 1 tsp baking powder

Advent “My Mum is a bit of a cow!” Not the words you want to hear from your five year old son under any circumstances. But when your husband is the minister of the church, and your child is declaring it loudly and confidently to one of the congregation… it could have been one of those moments when you want the ground to open up and swallow you whole. But the problem was that it was one hundred per cent true. “The minister’s wife is a bit of a cow?” I hear you ask. And I admit it: shocking, I know, but guilty as charged. And the explanation of this seemingly outrageous outburst from my son, many years ago? I was part of Daisy the cow, from Jack and the Beanstalk that our church was rehearsing for our Christmas pantomime. (But I refuse to admit which part, on the grounds that I’ve suffered enough embarrassment by my children over the years.) Once I had put my son’s comment into context, and enlightened the stunned church member of my thespian dreams (rather than my appalling parenting skills), she quickly saw the humour of the situation, and now, over twenty five years later, still teases both myself and my son every time we see her.

So what, apart from the rather tenuous panto link, has this got to do with Christmas, or more particularly Advent? Over the years the smelly, filthy, stable of the first Christmas has become sanitised into a cosy Christmas card barn, complete with cute animals. The reason our lives have become over complicated… by Emily Quinn
Selfie with Union J In last month’s 17-25 article, in issue 85 of the Eden Local, I tackled the misunderstood dialect of teenagers in the 21st century. This month the focus is positives and negatives of social media. How influential is social media really, and how much can it help save lives as well as destroy them? And what is an addiction? Can young people become addicted to social media? It definitely has its pros and cons; I think we can be certain of that much. When it comes to social media, I don’t use them all. Speaking from personal experience, with just Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram, I find that at least one third of the time I’m awake, I’m spending checking notifications or looking through stories and checking messages, but then I’m sure my parents would argue that I’m on my phone a lot more than that! People will be able to relate to it when I say it’s like we’ve been genetically programmed to check our phones every few minutes for notifications and messages coming through. For example, even writing this now, I’m getting distracted by notifications and getting embroiled in conversations with people. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m an English Language student, which involves a lot of writing, however, in an hour (in exam conditions) I can write 5 to 7 sides of A4 and I have fairly small handwriting. But when trying to write an essay which actually isn’t too difficult and doesn’t involve too much thought at home, two sides of A4 will take me a good hour. This is 100% down to distractions! 90% of those distractions being social media. My 13 year old sister, Daisy, is exactly the same if not worse, but these days, even younger children are giving in to social media, at an even earlier age. For EdenLocal

example, a boy I know whose parents are family friends tried to add me on Facebook… he’s 8 years old! Just 8!! Social media can cause so much harm. A film, made to be a horror but with a powerful message called ‘Unfriended’ released last year, has many underlying meanings which are horrifically true. The moral of the story was, cyberbullying and taunting through social media will come back and get you. One of my favourite quotes and plays ‘What goes around, comes around’. The statistics for bullying and suicides is demoralizingly alarming and heart wrenching, especially as cyberbullying is how bullies prey on their victims in this generation. Suicides in young people alone, due to bullying online, amount to 4,400 deaths a year on average and it all starts with a spiteful comment, a rumour or clicking the unlike button. That’s just the number of suicides though. There are thousands of other people of all ages, young and old who are getting taunted and constantly brought down through the use of social media and we might as well come to terms with the fact that this isn’t going to go away. Words on a screen for the whole world to see can do so much more than the punch up in the school yard you would’ve had 20 years ago. Even 5 years ago things weren’t nearly as bad as they are now. Social media is also a weapon of exploitation and hidden (disguised) grounds for paedophiles. internet sex crime relationships were initiated on a social networking site. 67% of teenagers said they know how to hide what they do online from their parents; this is VERY concerning… When I was researching, and came across these statistics, I was honestly completely horrified. For further statistics and information if you are interested in knowing this kind of thing, visit: https: www.guardchild.com When trying to find the negatives in something, you feel like you could talk forever, but actually, there are so, so many positives in social media too. For example, I have a good friend called Keir who was seriously ill with cystic fibrosis. He was getting progressively worse and he needed a new set of lungs. Towards Christmas 2015 he got really very ill and realisation kicked in. With commendable help from social media, we started fundraising and planning events to raise money to give him the best Christmas ever. Many of us contacted people from all over the country who then were sending money because they’d known people or had people in their families face this awful disease. News of what we were doing was travelling around and that was down to sharing, retweeting and tagging. Using social media, we were able to make one boy, the happiest boy in Cumbria even though he could’ve just given up. An inspirational boy with an inspirational story, fired up by the masses of support he was given from friends, family and even strangers willing to help on social media. being able to stay in contact with loved ones and friends, even if they’re thousands of miles away. It’s doesn’t matter where you are in the world. If you’ve got Wi-Fi or some mobile data you can talk to whoever, whenever, wherever, and this is a massive development in technology making a difference in society. It also enables you to get news around thousands of people in just seconds. For example, the progression with the American gossip regarding the Hillary vs Trump presidential battle. Truth or lies, news can be seen by every single profile in a day, which is hundreds of thousands of people all around the world. This is massively beneficial, especially when facing issues such as world crises and when countries are in need when things strike like natural disasters. Social media can do wonderful things! For example, to gain experience of radio journalism I did an interview with the boyband Union J as a presenter at Eden FM, and for weeks after, even now, I’m getting recognition from it. Video clips and pictures of the interview were picked up and shared by people from all over the country, even people from America, Greece and Africa were sharing it (I think we could class that as global embarrassment!) I didn’t think when I was doing it, that it would get so much attention and emphasis from others. Many people fall into the trap of letting social media take over their lives though and this is a very easy trap to fall into. In next month’s issue, I’ll expand on the traps of addiction and changes in laws and society’s way of acting in our generations.

It’s how I would describe the Top Trumps Cumbria project. Hours into days of research and what is really important and very positive is the contribution being made by people submitting ideas and those businesses now coming forward as sponsors. There are some cards remaining for sponsorship in the first set, so please enquire, especially as some of the key cards relating to mountains are still available. Last month we published what the first list of cards potentially would be. We have now started to design this set of cards. When all the cards are completed and supported with sponsorship, we will be off to print. Next month there will be a full update on how the first set is progressing. For those who may have missed the first few articles on the Top Trumps Cumbria project,
here is a bit of background on the project. Back in 2011, Eden FM negotiated terms to produce the first and only Penrith and Eden Valley Hasbro Toys Monopoly board game under license, with the UK Licensee of the game, Winning Moves UK. For a man who I watched demonstrate in his shop the magic of some of the toys he makes and sells to two parents with two young children, Paul Commander has entertained many generations with his tricks and toys. Paul has spent much of his life since 1985 as a Toy Maker, having been a carpenter and joiner. Quite by accident it would seem, he tried to find a particular toy for his toddler son and having failed to locate the toy, he set about designing one himself and from that the business was born.

November saw the first live broadcast from Appleby, where we took over the business hub at the library for two hours. A similar grouping of local residents, plus representatives from the tourist office talked and debated a wide range of topics related to Appleby. One item of particular focus, was the future of the 563 bus service from Appleby to Kirby Stephen and Penrith. Earlier in November, Eden FM was invited to broadcast from

the Every Family Needs a Farmer conference, held at the Penrith Golf Club. Part of a global series of 16 conference across five continents, there were speakers from all corners of the UK, with some delegates travelling from continental Europe. We spoke to all the conference speakers, including Graham Harvey, best known as the agricultural editor of The Archers. People in the Parish is due to be live in Penrith in December and in the new year we hope to travel to Kirby Stephen and Shap.

These first-hand memories of Wainwright, most of them not previously published, show Wainwright as he really was – a more complex and endearing figure than often portrayed. The Bonny Blues began October on the front foot with a comprehensive victory away at Washington. Jim Nichols’ men blew the hosts away with a 6 minute treble at the start of the 2nd half. Penrith travelled to, top of the table, North Shields full of confidence hoping to take points off the league leaders. Jim Nichols was full of praise for his team after they more than matched North Shields and could have come away with all 3 points if they’d have taken one of their chances but were undone by two late goals. Northern League Division 1 fixtures didn’t get any easier for the Bonny Blues as we hosted 2015 league champions Marske United at Frenchfield Park. The visitors were held up by over 2 hours due to a traffic accident at Scotch Corner and the game didn’t get underway until 5pm.

The squad is looking really strong with captain Grant Davidson and Tyler Bowman forming a formidable centre defence partnership and Kevin Connelly creating scoring chances with his superb vision. Martyn Coleman continues to find the back of the net and new signing Bobby Atkinson looks at ease stepping up to Northern League football.
Cup matches took priority next as we travelled to Willington in the league cup and hosted Braithwaite in the Cumberland Cup. We played some free flowing and free scoring football in both matches whilst giving some valuable game time to some of our reserve players which Connor Shields scored on his debut and looks an exciting talent. We suffered a disappointing home defeat to Consett when we just couldn’t find the back of the net despite creating numerous goalscoring opportunities. It was back to cup action as we hosted Easington Colliery in the FA Vase 1st round. The lads put in a professional performance and eased through 3.1 where we’ve been drawn away to Newcastle Benfield. It was important to start picking up league points as we travelled to
