TROUBLE WITH YOUR PC OR LAPTOP there is actually someone very local, not in a call centre, not at the end of an hour wait, that can help. These simple things don’t need to be big problems. I don’t think we can disagree with Steve Barker, the owner of Carlisle & Penrith’s D-Tec Computers, when he says that the little things they do that are the key to the long lasting business success they have, with less than three months until his company arrives in its 20th year of business; he has a very valid point.

customers love is that we know what we are talking about and will do everything we can to give them a hassle-free life, making sure they don’t spend hours tearing their hair out when something doesn’t work”. Steve has been with the company, which has stores in Carlisle and Penrith, since it opened its doors back in 1996, eventually buying it with his wife Sarah in 2006. To celebrate 15 years, they relocated the Penrith store to bigger premises on the Scotland Road, which is very visible with easy parking, making it very accessible to ‘drop your computer and go’ if required. The Carlisle store also had a huge refurbishment, bringing them both up to a modern and stylish look, with their custom-made colour-changing work tops. The showrooms were increased by about five times the size, which today as you’ll see gives D-Tec the capacity to always have around 30 different computers on display to choose from. “The team encourage customers to take advantage of the fact that the showrooms are very hands-on and in our work we give lots of advice and help you find what you really need”. Steve explained, “the main reason people come to us is because of the service we offer. Our after-sales service, whether you are a home-user or a business, it starts before you even take
Mark Tweddle delivery of your machine”. A jewel in the crown was the attention to that word personal, because ‘PC’ of course is Personal Computer, so at D-Tec Steve reinforced this term. ‘Each computer we sell gets the personal touch – we set it up, configure and update Windows, we remove any useless trial software, then we install the full versions that you do want. If you have an existing computer we sort out a full data transfer– moving over all your important documents, photos and settings, and it’s all included in the price. Once we are finished, your machine will be ready to switch on and go”. The customer service and taking the stress out of your life with computers doesn’t stop at the shops, because D-Tec, for a small
charge of £25, will deliver and install your machine. They’ll set everything up, configure your broadband, Wi-Fi, your printers and any other accessories you may have. This customer service isn’t just for new computers as repairs are also a huge part of their business and are all completed in store. According to Steve, they’ll have at least 70 machines in at any one time. The customer service, level of support and knowledge is of course attributed to D-Tec Computers strong team who have worked alongside Steve from the beginning, being key in developing the business. Geoff, who is mainly based in the Penrith store and Kevin, in the Carlisle store, are familiar faces to returning customers. Sarah, Steve’s wife, helps out behind the scenes with purchasing and promotions. “I am very lucky to have such loyal, hardworking members of staff,’’ says Steve. “They really are the face of the business.” Well if you thought this article really has hit the spot, I think we have left one of the best elements of the D-Tec service until last. D-Tec offer a same-day service. It is one of their biggest selling points. They don’t charge anything for the initial diagnostics. The final word from Steve is, “we find out what is wrong and then we’ll call you with a cost. Welcome to the October edition of your Eden Local So we are into October. That nip in the air I mentioned last month has certainly frosted up a few windows and cars as we prepare for the clocks to go back at midnight on Saturday 29th and British Summer time ends once more. Looking back, I think you’ll agree, we did have a summer. In our opening pages, it’s great to welcome back D-Tec computers. The first time I met Steve Barker, the owner of D-Tec was when he did his first advertising campaign back in the February issue of Eden Local back in 2011. As you will see, a lot has happened since then and all good I am pleased to report. I would like to thank quite a few of you who reacted in a very positive way to my daughter’s article 1725. It would seem that there were a few parents and grandparents sharing this article with members of their families in that age range. This month Emily has taken some of the challenges with what is part technology and part, well I think they call it changes to the English language, but I’ll leave that with Em’s! It’s on pages 18 to 20. Another hectic month it has been and this will continue as Eden FM Radio is now doing a series of shows from locations across
EdenLocal
the Eden Valley. As I finalise this edition of Eden Local, you’ll see with my article where I’ve been on pages 22 and 23 and in Nigel’s Eden FM update on pages 28 and 29 you’ll get a good idea of where I’ll be with the radio. It is going to be a busy month on the Cumbrian Top Trumps project as we are finalising the artwork for the first set of cards. If you would like to see your name, your business, town, village or organisation on one of 90 cards that we’ll be producing across the three sets of cards just as yourself or it could be the ultimate Christmas gift to be a part of history, all you need to know about this is on pages 24 and 25. Dark nights, low temperatures and Halloween are upon us again. We won’t be spoilt for choice on where to buy our novelties and decorations if we are having a party. I still find it strange when you walk past the Christmas decorations in September to find the Halloween decorations! Is it me? Am I more than just a traditionalist or am I of a certain age now, where I get excited about Christmas in December! Until next month Lee Quinn

CLEANSPEC
At Cleanspec this month, Eden local was up for the challenge of delivering an offer ‘online’ and in print.
'Rip and Strip' offer
To the right of this text is a ‘Rip and Strip’ offer. I explained to Lynne and Andrew, it’s a small sacrifice we make as a lot of people hang on to their Eden Locals, but if you do a good fold over at the line drawn, on the page, you can tear off the strip and save the rest of your Eden Local. With your strip, take yourself to Cleanspec before 30th November. Why? Well if you spend a minimum of £10 on presenting this ‘Rip a Strip’ voucher, you will get a packet of 10 Optima shine red microfibre cloths. What is so special about these cloths? Well like most of the products you’ll see in the Cleanspec shop, they are for professional or domestic use. And this is what makes this Cleanspec offer so special…… The cloths are microfibre, which is made from a mixture of polyester and polyamide and is treated causing each fibre to split to a thickness of 1/100 of a human hair. This gives the fibre more than 40 times the surface area of a normal fibre. These split fibres have many pin holes and cut edges that allow it to absorb liquid, remove and hold dirt and grease until, machine washed up to 90 °C and after washing, you can just hang them out to dry. Here is some more information on your microfibre cloth….. ;; ;; ;; ;; ;;
Designed to be laundered up to 500 times Traps dust, dirt and grease with ease Removes up to 99% of bacteria from surfaces using just water Leaves surfaces clean, smear free and shiny Suitable for cleaning all surfaces
If you don’t want to try this at home, take your Eden Local to Cleanspec and they will gladly ‘Rip a Strip’ for you. Whilst you’re visiting, you may want to drop off your grubby rug and take full advantage of the ‘Drop and Go’ Cleanspec rug cleaning service.
Spend £10 or over on Cleanspec products or services (including ‘drop & go’ rug cleaning) and claim your

Remembering reminds us who we are and where we have come from. In October and early November, we are urged to deliberately make time to remember. Most obvious are the days leading up to and including Remembrance Sunday on 13th November, but before that come days for remembering individuals who have shaped our lives. All Saints Day (November 1st) celebrates the spiritual celebrities, though by definition they’d be horrified to be described as such. Some of their lives have been recorded (and no doubt sometimes embellished) by history. Their stories remind us that we are part of a great story going back many hundreds of years and continuing long after we are gone. This gives a healthy sense of perspective when the urgent and the now seem so terribly important. They also remind us that our lives have an impact on people, for good or not so good, far beyond our recognition. However, All Saints is just that – ALL, not just the stained-glass window versions. We remember and celebrate those whose names might not have been among history’s headline acts, but who have made a profound impact for good on our world and on our own lives. Perhaps we can use some time this month, before the hectic to-do-before-Christmas list takes over, to remember the people who have inspired us, whose lives have made us the people we are, regardless of whether anyone calls them ‘saints’. ‘All Souls’ follows on November 2nd when we especially remember those

MEMBER……….. who have died recently. We give thanks for their lives and remind ourselves that letting go is itself a complex journey, not an immediate event. The Christian Church and many other faith groups affirm that we ‘let go’ into the life that is no less real than the one we know. The horizon is only the limit of our vision and All Souls dares us to trust that the horizon of our lives is not the end of the story. Our culture sometimes tries to find short-cuts around grief, but there aren’t any that are healthy. Grieving is part of loving and we should not close our hearts to either. ‘Halloween’ on October 31st the day before (eve – hence E’en) All Saints (or All Hallows) Day, though it probably has its roots in ancient Celtic festivals around the end of summer and the lengthening nights. It was believed that the physical and the spiritual worlds, the living and the dead were close at this time. It’s a shame this is the one that has become culturally dominant and therefore distorted both from its pre-Christian roots and Christian interpretation. Remember, literally, to re-member or to put back together, to be joined together again with the people, the stories, the living history that has made us. Not all remembering is good for us; some we need to leave behind, but healthy remembering, making the past present for us again and can inspire us to live now and tomorrow in ways that others will be happy to remember us by one day. November
Remember; Remember the 5th of November... By Pam Waggott In 1605 the infamous Gunpowder Plot took place. When Queen Elizabeth I was on the throne she had introduced a number of laws which Roman Catholics felt were unfair to them. Having had to practice their religion in secret, and having been persecuted further by James I, a small group led by Robert Catesby plotted that when the next Parliamentary session was opened by the King they would blow up the Houses of Parliament. Guy Fawkes was given the job of watching over the barrels of gunpowder hidden below the building and was to light the fuse when every one was assembled. However on the morning of 5th November soldiers of the King found Guy Fawkes and the explosives hidden in the cellar and arrested him. He was taken to the Tower of London where he
was questioned and then tortured until he revealed the whole plot and named his conspirators. In celebration of the fact that the plot had been foiled King James decreed that all the people of England should have large bonfires on the night of 5th November to remember that the traitors had been caught out. Since 1678 the
cellars of Parliament have been searched prior to the opening of each new session ... just in case! The ‘celebration’ continues today with bonfires being lit across the country and effigies of Guy being placed on top and burned. Fireworks are also let off as a reminder of the gunpowder which, had it been ignited, would have created a display of epic proportions! Fireworks certainly divide opinion; some people enjoy a firework display whether in the back garden, at the local recreation field or a large organised display while others dislike them and consider them as noisy, disruptive and frightening for family pets. But what of the history of fireworks themselves? It would appear that as long ago as 200 B.C. the Chinese inadvertently ‘invented’ the firecracker. Green

bamboo stalks were used to write on and then heated on coals to dry; left too long in the embers the bamboo would overheat, expand and often burst with a loud bang. Early scholars also found that this scared away the large mountain men that live in the region and so the firecracker was born. According to some accounts it would appear that early Chinese alchemists accidently mixed potassium nitrate (saltpetre) with sulphur and charcoal and in doing so they produced an early recipe for gun powder. By the mid 11th century gunpowder was being produced and used as a weapon. When bamboo tubes were filled with this early gunpowder an early ‘sparkler’ was made and this was then attached to arrows and fired into the enemies strongholds. However it took until around 1830 before the more familiar firework was developed by the Italians. Early pyrotechnicians (what a great job title!) created a shell shaped like an ice-cream cone. The ‘cornet’ contained the fuel while the scoop of ‘ice-cream’ had the required chemicals and charges to produce the firework effect. The same principle is used to day with different chemicals producing the range of colours we see at a fire work display. Deep reds are produced by the use of strontium and lithium, copper produces blue hues, titanium and magnesium burn silver and white, calcium burns with an orange colour, sodium burns yellow and green is produced by the burning of barium. By combining chlorine with barium or copper, neon and turquoise
flames are produced. By including layers of different salts, aluminium or iron flakes the hiss, boom and crackle is made as each layer is ignited! The Japanese word for firework is ‘hanabi’ means ‘fire-flower’ which seems to be appropriate but it mustn’t be forgotten that fireworks are chemical reactions and so can be dangerous. For example three sparklers when burnt together produce the same amount of heat as a blow-torch and of course they retain their heat even when the sparkle has gone. It should also be remembered that some pets and young children can be frightened by the noise of fireworks and also that the throwing of fireworks in a street or public place is a criminal offence as is selling fireworks illegally – you could be fined up to £5,000, imprisoned for up to 6 months and there are also on the spot fines of £90. Whatever you do on 5th November enjoy yourselves and stay safe!

17 to 25! That period of our lives in which we feel no one understands us! by Emily Quinn
sometimes seem alien. We may speak too quickly, speak unclearly or say words which you’re pretty sure aren’t English. This is because, much like things such as music, art, video games, climate change and population growth, our dialect is morphing. Admittedly, a lot of what we say doesn’t make sense but I’m going to try and put teenagers’ dialect into context.
Following on from last month’s introduction to 17 to 25, I’m going to focus and expand on one of the most misunderstood elements of a teenager’s development. This is very much linked to influences from social media and people of our ages around us; picking up speech from them. Teenagers’ language is something that is debated a lot in the household and it is important to try to understand where these words are coming from and why they are becoming so commonly used by our generation. The way in which we speak can EdenLocal
When entering into conversation with us you need to keep an open mind! You need to read between the lines and to some extent imagine the opposite of what we’re actually saying. For example, if I were to say, “mam, can you get us er (a) maccies please”. The translation would be “mother, please may you pick me up a McDonalds”. It’s that simple! We just expect our parents to understand us. However, if you imagine speeding up someone’s normal speech by about five times, you can see how that sentence becomes incomprehensible. Another thing you need to bear in mind when entering into conversation with us, is the fact our brains are going through serious developmental changes (hopefully for the better!) So what sounds like jibberish, might actually be jibberish. I know I don’t just speak for myself when

archaic language and words new to the English Dictionary! For example, did you know that the words ‘twerk’ (an interesting dance move) and ‘selfie’ (a way of taking a photo) are now in the English Dictionary? New words are being made up every day, and because young people like myself are very influenced by the world around us, we pick up the words! More so maybe than other generations. On a jolly round town, my mum, my sister and I were having a conversation about my sister’s tiring day at school. My sister then started talking about her flanter (flirty banter (conversation)) skills! I looked at my mum and began to explain what that meant; much to my surprise, mum laughed at me and said she lives with two teenage girls, and so knew what flanter was. My sister and I were in hysterics as we had no idea we’d trained mum so well! Whereas, in the land of social media and screens, there is the language of emojis. This can also be known as tiny pictures, almost impossible to see on a small screen, which are meant to make conversation easier when trying to explain Continued on page 20

something. Examples of this are when you are trying to tell someone what you are feeling, but don’t know which words to use. This was their original purpose and now they possess a million other meanings. It’s rather odd how people now can have a conversation completely made out of emojis. It is however debatable whether there’s much point in this, because there are so many hundreds of emojis, it takes forever to find the ones you want to use! Sticking to the concept of screens and social media, hash tags (#) and @’s are the new best way of getting messages across (apparently). For example, #chocolateisthebest or @chocolateislife. Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter and Instagram are the main four social medias used and @’s and #’s are the most commonly used devices on these programs. I will however, expand and focus on both the positives and the negatives of social medias in next month’s issue. emilyq16@outlook.co.uk

An Autumn Afternoon in
It was Tuesday 4th October and I was going to ’pop over’ to Alston for an hour. Well that was the plan as it’s only 20 miles away! I left the Eden FM studios just after 12.15pm with my camera. I had to collect some posters and promotional cards on the way as the reason for my visit was to promote the first ever live show for Eden FM that would be in Alston the following Tuesday. There is more about this initiative and the Eden FM on the road roadshows with Eden District Council on pages 28 and 29. To be honest, I have never really explored Alston. It was about 9 or 10 years ago that we took our first

ride on the South Tynedale Railway. I have probably visited Alston three or four times relating to business, but it was actually back in June 2013 when I first started talking to Alix Martin and a few others who live in Alston about the town having its own radio or linking with Eden FM. At that point Eden wasn’t a full time station, but now I am really hoping Alston will have its own radio studio set up and an Alston Eden FM team. Meanwhile, in that afternoon I covered more ground than I have ever done before in Alston. I met so many people and for the first time I popped into Samuel Kings School, one of the smallest comprehensives in England. As you see, I took a few photos and it was almost 3.30pm,

after catching up with the team at the Alston Railway station and meeting Mike in the signal box, who had only recently moved into the area this summer, that I thought I had better start heading back to Penrith. As I pulled out of the car park, I saw a sign for the HUB. I looked at my watch and thought I’ll just have a look. Well I was ‘blown away’ as I pulled up and saw a beautiful classic 1934 MG PA Midget. I had arrived at an old goods shed, once at the centre of Alston Moor’s transport links to the industrial heartlands of Britain and played a vital role in the development of the lead mining industry. What began as an idea in 2001, was an exhibition on transport and the heritage of Alston Moor. The exhibition was to run for about 3 weeks, but its success supported then by a group of enthusiasts just kept it running, so I stepped in to the HUB Museum, greeted by two volunteers, Jeff Rogers and Steve Frogley, seen here with the MG. As you can see, it’s quite a big shed. As someone that has been working in voluntary groups for many years, I just knew that once that camera came out of my car, I would have to share in this first of many visits I’ll be having to the HUB. It is open from 11am to 4pm Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. You might squeeze in a visit before they close for winter by 31st October, because after all it is a shed and a cold one I’m told in the winter. For more details about the Hub and the Charitable organisation, Alston Goods Shed Trust, you can have a look at their website www.alston-hub.org.uk. Meanwhile, I’ll leave you with some images of my afternoon at Alston. I finally left the town at about 4.45 after another short stop, meeting Ian Henderson of Hendersons Garage who loans many of the cars to the HUB. Should your town be featured in the Legends, Locals and Locations? There are so many unique things in Cumbria. Are you living close to one of them? Who will feature in the second and third sets of the Cumbria Top Trumps cards?
You don’t have to play the game to put your name in the frame To print over 30,000 packs of Top Trumps cards for the three sets of cards we are now preparing for production, we will be relying on local organisations, Cumbrian businesses and individuals who would like their name on a card. There are 30 cards in each pack and we are producing over 10,000 of each pack. Are you in a location close to a Cumbrian Top Trumps card? Do you have a business looking out at your favourite mountain, lake or river?
Some Locals, Legends and Locations could be Tarzan of Greystoke, along with writers, monuments, buildings, railways, transport, historic landmarks, towns and villages. When it comes to the ‘Only in Cumbria’ set of cards, we are looking at culture, food, festivals, shows, sport and wildlife. The qualities and things that are as much a part of Cumbria as it’s people and those famous places feature in the Locals, Legends and Locations pack of cards.

A fan letter from Meg Unbeknown to Wainwright, the writer of the Meg letters was Max Hargreave. In 1966 he stood on top of Great Gable and other fells collecting signatures for Wainwright to be awarded an honour for his work on The Pictorial Guides. In 1967, Wainwright was awarded an MBE. It wasn’t until 1977 that Wainwright discovered the true identity of the man who had done so much to bring the work of Wainwright to the attention of the authorities.
Alfred Wainwright had many letters from his loyal fans and he would always try to answer each one personally. In 1971 he had a letter from Meg, who was, apparently, a six-year old dog who lived in Southport and was a keen fellwalker. Wainwright had a soft spot for animals and dedicated Book 3, The Central Fells, to The Dogs of Lakeland. So perhaps it is not surprising that he wrote back to Meg to congratulate her on her achievement of climbing all the 214 Lakeland fells.
Wainwright wrote to Max Hargreave in 1977: ‘Well, thank you for clearing up a ten-year mystery! I had long ago given up all thought of ever finding a solution to it. … Of course I remember Meg, and actually have been expecting to hear from her with a report that she has completed the trinity. … I hope she keeps well and still has a fond liking for the high places of Lakeland.’ The Wainwright Letters pp. 270-1
‘I think you are a super little girl. You are the tops, really and truly. Yes, a few others have climbed all the 214 hills, but they were big strong men. The youngest I know of was a boy from Carlisle, but he was 16 (sixteen, not six). So you hold the record and ought to get Daddy to write to the papers about it and get you on television. People have got medals for less!!!’ The Wainwright Letters p. 268
If you would like to know more about The Wainwright Society, log on to the website at www. wainwright.org.uk or email secretary@wainwright.org.uk
Meg ‘wrote’ to Wainwright a few years later informing him that she had climbed the 214 fells for a second time. Wainwright wrote back: ‘You ought to go down in history with Scott and Amundsen and Drake and Marco Polo. Never before in the records of fellwalking has there been such an achievement as yours.’ The Wainwright Letters p. 269

What Exactly is a ‘Community’? By Nigel Peacock, Eden FM
There are many communities in the Eden Valley. Individual villages or towns are a community. Those sharing a particular interest can be defined as a community. We have a strong farming community. How about the business community? Eden FM is your ‘community radio station’ and is here to serve the The weighty Oxford English Living Dictionary, defines community as – “The people of a district or country considered collectively, especially in the context of social values and responsibilities; society”. There are also several other definitions and here is the Eden Local take on the word.
