Dear Residents and Businesses Welcome to your September edition of Eden Local and a special welcome to our new readers in CA10 3 which should include Shap, Cliburn, Crosby Ravensworth, Tebay, Bretherdale Head, Galsgill, Morland, Orton, Sleagill, Reagill, Sunbiggin, Newby, Raisbeck, Keld, Great Strickland, Kings Meaburn, Roundthwaite, Maulds Meaburn, Greenholme and Towsett. For our new readers, receiving the magazine for the first time and for those who would like to know more, on page 39 there is a map of the area covered by the Eden Local and our sister titles. Eden Local is an independent family owned business that was originally launched in November 2010 to around 5,000 homes in Penrith. One of our key aims is to help local community projects, support the importance of a successful local economy and the one rule that we have always had is that we don’t print bad news. All the Cumbrian Local publications are delivered via the Royal Mail door to door service. Our distribution will be close to a total of 60,000 before the Eden Local and its other titles reach two years in circulation. Over the last few months so much has happened locally, across the county and at a national level. Whilst the weather has been patchy to say the least, it’s been a summer with so many positives; community spirit and passion shared across Great Britain, the Queens Jubilee, the Olympics and the huge range of local events and activities that come rain or shine carry on regardless of the weather. So much achieved and so many people involvedquite fantastic! In this month’s publication, we have some interesting facts from Love Solar Renewables about Heat pumps (pages 4 – 5). I have continued to follow the progress of the Local Co-op in Shap and the other Penrith Co-op Society stores across Cumbria in their efforts to gain stronger links with local suppliers, wholesalers and producers in developing a larger range of low mileage, local products (pages 19 - 21). One man I feel I have had running around the county this month who has produced some outstanding images for so many of the articles, is Paul Witterick of Wittwoo Photography (Appleby). Paul has his first article and images covering Kendal Calling on pages 40 – 41, thank you Paul I hope you enjoy this months Eden Local, if you have an interesting hobby, event or a story you would like to share, please drop me a line. Solar PV and alternative energy solutions Renewables Solar PV (Solar Electric) The world of solar PV has changed dramatically in the last year. Since December 2011, we have seen the Feed In Tariff rate drop from 43p per unit to 16p per unit but we have also seen the price of solar PV panels and installations drop by over 50% in this same time period. Returns of 12% + per annum are still very much achievable; it is still one of the best investments available. For those who have already got solar PV systems installed or for those who do not have a suitable property there are a number of additional renewable technologies on the market and every bit as financially lucrative - Love Solar can now offer these technologies.

Solar Hot Water (Solar Thermal) Depending on your life style, family size, and hot water requirements a Solar Thermal system could be the system for you; reducing your hot water energy costs by up to 80% per annum. In brief, solar thermal system uses sunlight to heat your water via the use of tubes or plates (usually mounted on your roof) this heat is transferred to your hot water tank where it will heat or assist in bringing your water to the required temperature.

Renewable Heat Incentive For solar thermal systems you can also get paid as much as 8.3p per KWh of heat generated in much the same way as the Feed in tariff for solar PV.

Biomass Boilers & Pellet Stoves In brief a biomass boiler is a high tech log or wood chip burning stove with an advance and automated control. They can be used to heat a large farm or commercial building or the smaller pellet stoves can be used in a domestic property.

How do they differ from a conventional wood burning stove? • They usually run on wood chips, pellets or logs. • They have a wood hopper store which enables the stove to be kept going without the need for continual feeding. • The heat generated is used for hot water and heating and can replace the need for oil or gas • You are actually PAID for the heat you generated

Someone did say to me that they had seen who the winner was at the recent Langwathby Scarecrow festival. As I do every year I took more than a few hours out with the family to walk around. I was also doing a live broadcast from the Eden FM Radio outside broadcasting unit so I really got my money’s worth on the day. Here is a picture of the first, second and third prize winners. I caught up with Mrs Carol Merrie and her husband David of Caroline Cottage to discuss the Mole theme. It was a plan well executed and it included Carol photographing images of Moles in a mirror so that when she displayed them they weren’t all facing the same way. My congratulations to all those who took part, we will be loading the imagines taken on the day onto the Eden Local website, if you would like any of the images please drop us a line to info@edenlocal.co.uk -there is no charge for these. Payroll – It’s “Time to get Real”

Does your business employ staff? Then you will have a payroll. Do you know what’s happening from next April? No? Not sure? In that case read on! In April 2013 HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) will introduce a new way of reporting PAYE – it goes by the snazzy title of “Real Time Information” or “RTI”. RTI is a system for reporting pay, tax, National Insurance (NI) and other data to HMRC that will be collected every time a payment is made to an employee. If you use payroll software, this will collect all the relevant data and send it “online” to HMRC (but note - RTI does not affect payment methods). To make sure you are indeed still paying attention - RTI will become mandatory between April & October 2013. Ok - so what are the key changes? Well, here are three you should be aware of. Employers will send information electronically to HMRC about employees’ pay and deductions before or at the same time as they are paid. This is called a Full Payment Submission (FPS). The annual process of submitting “End of Year” returns (P14s for all employees, P35 summary, and declaration) will cease. New starter forms (P45/P46) will not be submitted to HMRC.

And how will RTI affect my business? First - let’s look at your payroll data. It’s essential that your payroll is correct. You won’t be able to make RTI submissions to HMRC without the key details for each employee. Second - employee payments. RTI requires details about the tax and NI treatment of payments each time a payment is made. This means that details about e.g. tax free payments will be included in the RTI submission together with data such as hours worked. Thirdly HMRC will know immediately the tax liability each month – and that means it becomes so much easier for HMRC to be paid on time!

So what happens next? HMRC will be sending cunningly worded invitations to join RTI (it’s compulsory don’t forget!) with a date to submit your employee details by. In simple terms employers will submit an Employer Alignment Submission (EAS) to align employee records with HMRC records before submitting other information. So here is an opportunity to ensure that all your employee information has been checked and verified.

This sounds like a lot of work – how can Full Circle help? Full Circle Accountancy runs cost effective payrolls for a number of its clients and uses software that will be RTI compliant. Our clients’ payrolls will meet the new RTI standards. We can make sure yours does too – give us a call on 01768 580058 or email hello@ fullcircleaccoutancy.co.uk.

Are there any advantages to RTI? The most obvious is that there will be no annual end of year returns. In theory it should also mean more frequent updating of tax codes and reduced levels of under/ overpayments. It could be the opportunity to streamline your payroll e.g. if you have weekly paid staff, it might be worth shifting to a monthly payroll to reduce the number of submissions. EdenLocal

Support the BID and vote ‘Yes’ to release

All the Ps are coming together for Penrith in November when local businesses will have the opportunity to vote in favour of the town’s bid proposal to become a Business Improvement District (BID). Over the past year local businesses have been canvassed for their opinions about how they would like to use money generated through a ‘Business Levy’ on a percentage of their rateable values to improve the town over the next five years, if the BID proposal was approved. Local business owner Kelvin Dixon and Member of the Shadow Board for the Business Improvement District Bid, said: “A ‘Yes’ vote in favour of establishing a Business Improvement District for Penrith would be real catalyst for change. It has the potential to generate £500,000 over the next five years to deliver the ideas local businesses have put forward to realise the town’s potential. The cost of backing the BID for the majority Penrith’s small businesses would be only around £0.50 per day, or the price of a packet of crisps! Over the next two to three weeks businesses in the town will be delivered a Summary Document containing the full proposals and explaining the main aims of the Business Improvement District for Penrith. They will also be given means to see a full Business

Plan either online or be able to see a copy at selected locations such as the Town Hall or Library etc. The key aims of the BID are split into four Ps under the strapline ‘Release Penrith’s Potential’: Promote Penrith – A comprehensive marketing campaign to ensure that the town’s retail offer translates into an improved identity and perception of the town to boost sales and the experience of customers and visitors. This would be delivered through three projects including: • A five year targeted marketing campaign for the town • Improving the use of social and online media for 400 businesses • Contributing funding to support festivals and events in Penrith Pride in Penrith – Has three distinct elements: A new partnership between businesses community groups and local Councils to plan and deliver the maintenance of town centre floral displays and a programme to improve and maintain the public realm. Supporting the community-led ‘Greening Penrith Initiative Project’ that adds and colour and brightness to the town centre.

Penrith’s potential A new ‘townscape initiative’ that pump-primes community-led projects using arts, culture and heritage to generate pride in the town. Park in Penrith – In partnership with the District Council, the Penrith BID will contribute to the trial of new car parking initiatives cost effective promotions to make it easier and more affordable to access the town centre. Professional Penrith – this would be achieved through three key projects: • Business Training – Investing in customer service initiatives to build on the high standards of service offered in Penrith’s specialist shops. • Business Networking – To highlight local expertise and to encourage trading and knowledge and services within the BID area. • Better deals – Using economies of scale to benefit businesses by centrally negotiating deals for better services such as insurance, decoration, trade waste etc. Eden District Councillor David Whipp, who champions Penrith’s business community said: “This is the best opportunity Penrith have ever had to be the master of their own destiny. For the first time Penrith businesses have a real opportunity to come together

and spend money on things decided solely by them without interference from anyone else. It is a one off opportunity for them to make things better. It could not be better timing in this difficult economic climate. “The District Council are pleased to be supporting the business community in the delivery of this exciting project. “ The BID process is being supported by the Rural Development Programme for England, which provided the funding for the BID Co-ordinator. The project is part financed by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development: Europe investing in rural areas, which is managed by DEFRA.

It was a few months ago that the Society linked with the Lakes Free Range Egg Company at Stainton, to get locally produced eggs. These are now being phased into its other stores in Cumbria ‘Local Eggs, locally laid now in store’ Fresh and Local Sourced from the Source

but it hasn’t stopped there. I have been out with John Mills, Chief Executive Officer, keeping up with him on a quest for more local lines; locally grown produce, locally

Peter Sidwell, now at your Local Co-op Society In January 2012, Peter Sidwell, local TV chef and writer of the “Simply Goodâ€? range of cookery books, became a partner at Rheged working alongside their chefs, to develop both the menu and the talent within the kitchen. In between a busy filming schedule and travelling around the UK Peter had a number of options for the launch of his new book “Simply Good Family Foodâ€?. Peter Sidwell chose the local option to launch the book at the Penrith Co-op department store. The few hours on a Saturday morning wasn’t just a flying visit but the start of a longer term strategy to assist the Penrith Co-operative Society to further develop its recent campaign to source more local products and to work with more locally based businesses.

Fresh Ice Cream? Yes Please!!!

Whilst we started with a Saturday morning book signing and ice cream making demonstration, over the next 12 months Peter will continue his work with the Co-op. Visiting your local Penrith Co-op and travelling around the other local stores introducing recipe cards based around key local ingredients sourced by the Penrith Co-operative Society and he’ll be back every month with a food demonstration with these specially selected local products. I’ll close a final word from John Mills, who did happen to take one sting out of a bee on his recent discovery of local honey

Our members open day on Thursday the 20th September will be a day to remember as the society will be showcasing many of the new initiatives that are currently taking place, especially with some of our local producers of high quality goods. We will have Peter Sidwell on hand giving demonstrations using some of this fine locally produced fare, as well as many wonderful offers throughout the store that you simply cannot afford to miss. Instant Ice Cream By Peter Sidwell

This is a great recipe, it’s fast fresh and simple. Just make sure your grapes are well frozen and you’re ready to eat. I make this with my daughter as she loves ice cream, but does not like waiting for it to freeze.

Ingredients

Here’s how

Serves 4

Place the frozen grapes and yogurt into a food processor

1kg of seedless grapes 200g of thick Greek yogurt 1 piece of fresh ginger 1 tbsp of local honey

Peel and slice the ginger and add to the yogurt and grapes, followed by the honey Blend the Icecream until smooth, then serve immediately or place in the freezer until you need it. phone: 01768 899111

A taste to Experience In the early days of the Eden Local publication some of you may remember I did a series of articles covering the origin of speciality dishes prepared by Abu the proprietor of Indiagate and his team. We covered the origin of the ingredients and its influences. The articles, which were titled ‘From the Chopping Board to the Table’ were well received and digested I may add. Of course after working our way through the menu of specials it was then time to take a break. I remember sitting down with Abu and discussing what would come next?. It would have to be some thing traditional but spiced with innovation was how we left it. Almost twelve months later I got a call, not about a new menu but a new unique dish, which I was invited to try with my wife. After a couple of poppadoms I was advised not to eat too many. When the 12 spoons arrived and 6 sets of knives and forks I had to look around to see who else was coming. I soon found out why,

the dish was described to me as Mongli Hundi (I have probably got this wrong) and it consisted, as you can see from the image of not just a dish but a tray of dishes and quite a few. Starters and main altogether and as you can see it had mini naan breads in the centre, a salad, Chicken Pakora, a lamb dish,

chicken Korma style dish and vegetable dish and a rice dish which like all of the dishes was not like the norm I have had. I can eat a hot dish my wife prefers mild, this entire dish was some where in the middle, which we think will work well for a family. The confession is we had one of these each!!! The origin of the dish dates back to the Mongol Empire which launched several invasions into the Indian subcontinent from 1221 to 1327. I had no idea of the size of the Empire until I looked at the map. The Empire had many influences on culture, architecture and food and that is how we arrived at our new dish, which will be served Monday to Thursdays. My thanks to Abu for this wonderful experience of an amazing dish.

A Reality of Life It’s something that tends to be discussed when your not in a good state of mind and full of mixed emotions but unfortunately it is a part of life that is inevitable and unavoidable. It is something that in life we have to grow up with and learn to deal with. The loss of someone close or someone we know is never easy to deal with but in presenting this short article I hope it may plant the idea that whilst we can never fully prepare ourselves emotionally for eventualities that lie ahead, we can ease many pressures for those around us if for a moment we take some time to plan ahead. To write this short introduction about Richardson’s Funeral Directors, I met Michael, Alistair and Sue at their spacious funeral home located to the south side of Penrith’s town centre, along Victoria Road. A part of John Richardson & Son Timber Merchants it was founded by John and Thomas Richardson (grand children of John Richardson) in 1895. On the internet these days you will find funeral directors listed under the heading of funeral directors and planners. The planning is one of the key areas we will look at in this article, because it’s an area we do not always do that well. Like many things that require planning it comes with a budget and it involves a lot of people and resources.

requirements. There is a long list of things that need to be done on your behalf; from booking the cemetery, the cremation, the church or chapel, the minister, the order of service and type of service, the newspaper notices, the transport, the flowers and then on the day the logistics and assurance that everyone is in the right place at the right time. The only task Richardson’s cannot do for you is to actually register the death with the Registrar but they can even help and advise on how this has to be done. Your wishes or the wishes of loved ones can be planned today. In my own experience I have seen the benefits of planning with my grandmother, which evolved from not having things in place for my grandfather. What I and the rest of my family know is that involvement and planning has resulted in a massive worry being taken away and which I hope in years to come will prove to be a worthwhile investment in time and budgeting.

Whilst Richardson’s Funeral Directors are on call 24 hours a day 365 days of the year it does help to have planned ahead as much as possible to ensure that the wishes of all concerned are carried out. How prepared are you for the future? You can give Richardson’s a call and arrange a discussion about you and your loved ones wishes. Thinking ahead now whilst your mind is clear is a good thing. Many of us probably don’t know half of what is required or half of what Richardson’s can do in helping us plan.

You can call Michael, Alistair or Sue on Tel: 01768 891189 or you can email them michael@richardsons-funerals.co.uk sue@richardsons-funerals.co.uk alistair@richardsons-funerals.co.uk

Preparing for an uncertain future can be done today; Richardsons’s Funeral Directors can do all but one thing in arranging and meeting your funeral

They are there to help you through a difficult time.

No frequency

Eden

After a fantastic second Restricted Service Licence (RSL) the behind the scenes hard work begins once again. Dramatic changes are currently being made to our home at Ullswater Road Garage, a new wall is being constructed which will segregate the Radio from The Cumbria Mini Centre showroom, as well as a few studio changes - plenty to keep us busy while we wait for the official nod from OFCOM, the regulator, to send in our full time community radio licence application, then, we wait once more to see if the application has been successful – Fingers crossed!!

Eden FM radio may have disappeared from your FM radio for the time being but we are still streaming 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on www.edenfm.co.uk. Our second RSL on 87.7FM was a major success, we ‘the team’ strived to be more relaxed, polished and unique, which came across well while presenting (even though it was only the second time on FM frequency for the majority of us) our confidence levels have grown thanks to your overwhelming feedback, there was still a few nerves for the first couple of days but it really does make such a difference knowing we are brightening somebody’s day.

Although we may seem quiet at the moment we have lots to do and will we also continue to support local events, local businesses and the local community. On behalf of the team Thank you to everyone who supports us, we couldn’t do it without you. Keep an eye on www.edenfm.co.uk for updates and click ‘listen live’ to catch our shows. Sian Whittaker Eden FM Studio Manager/ Deputy Chair

We covered a huge range of events while on FM, from the scarecrow festival at Langwathby, to a constant live stream from the Boot & Shoe, Greystoke which was a fantastic achievement for us considering the signal from the transmitter at the studio didn’t reach Greystoke during our first RSL back in winter. The highlight event had to be the Olympic Torch Relay, what a fantastic atmosphere! We really did feel privileged to be part of it.

30 • Eden Local Walking

with Keith Wood

Shap Abbey and Keld

Situated on the banks of the River Lowther just on the eastern fringes of the Lake District National Park, the ruins of Shap Abbey make a fine centrepiece for this delightful short walk. The abbey belonged to the order of Premonstratensian monks founded in northern France, known as White Canons due to the colour of their habits. The walk crosses a packhorse bridge over the River Lowther and passes through the village of Keld with its 16th Century Chapel, now in the care of the National Trust. 1 From the small car parking area at the abbey immediately turn right across the bridge over the River Lowther, sign posted to Shap Abbey. Pass through the gate and immediately go up the embankment on the right to a large ladder stile. Cross over the ladder stile and go straight on along the high level path above the river to enter a large field and walk through the field along the top of the embankment above the river. As the river swings around to the left, the green path through the field becomes clearer leading to another ladder stile over the wall at the far end of the field. Climb the stile and follow the clear path across the open field to another ladder style. Climb the stile and follow the path adjacent to the wall through the next field. Cross the stream at the low point of the field and keep on up to the brow of the hill keeping the wall on the left in sight. At the high point of the field the view opens out to the north east with Loadpot Hill being the rounded mound directly to the front and glimpses of the tops of Harter Fell, Kidsty Pike, the far end of Swindale to the left. Pass the corner of the wall keep heading on a diagonal route across the field beneath the telephone wires to reach a walkers gate through the drystone wall just before reaching a few trees. Through the gate and head across this last enclosure towards a gate with a surfaced lane beyond. EdenLocal

phone: 01768 899111

www.edenlocal.co.uk

2 Turn left to walk up the narrow single track road, ignoring the waymarker pointing to the right. Walk up the gentle incline to reach the highest point on the walk at just under 900’ above sea level with views across to the right to Swindale Head with wind swept moorland either side of the road. 3 At a T junction turn left onto a concrete surfaced lane. These concrete surfaced roads were built to connect the network of water reservoirs on behalf of the Manchester Corporation of the 1930’s. The River Lowther together with the abbey appears in the valley bottom away to the left. 4 At a crossroads, take the left turn heading down to the tiny hamlet of Keld. Cross the bridge over the River Lowther, walk up through Keld. Ignore the first Public Footpath sign to Shap Abbey and continue up through the village. Pass by the diminutive sixteenth century Keld Chapel. 5 At the top of the village, turn left to follow the Public Footpath sign to Shap Abbey around the back of Kiln House. Cross the stile over the fence into the field and follow the faint track straight across the field to reach a walled funnel shaped enclosure. About 2/3 along the left hand wall, climb over the ancient stone steps built into the wall and continue heading back in the direction of the abbey. Walk through this and the next field with Shap Abbey and River Lowther down in the valley below to the left. Pass through the last gated wall and walk down the embankment back to the waiting car. Look out for Keith’s “ Boot up” series of local walking books, which can be found in many local outlets including Penrith Outdoor Pursuits, the usual internet bookshops or directly from the author at:

Glorious welcome for the second Lowther Country Fair!

The highly anticipated Lowther Country Fair arrived within the stunning grounds of Lowther Castle at the weekend, with Countryman Fairs’ newest event welcoming visitors in their thousands through their gates to experience the very best our countryside has to offer. Welcoming glorious weather and an incredible response from both locals and visitors from up and down the country, the year’s northern showcase saw sports enthusiasts and families enjoying countryside demonstrations, traditional field sports, have-a-go activities and lots of family entertainment. Lowther also played host to another set of qualifying rounds in many sporting disciplines including the Mitsubishi Motors World Series Clay Shooting and Gundog Championships, the Terrier and Lurcher Champion of Champions and the ATEO Junior Airgun Championships; putting through successful qualifiers who will now compete with the other finalists at the prestigious Midland Game Fair’s Grand Final this September. With lovely unbroken sunshine, visitors were able to sit on the stunning bank surrounding the Main Arena to soak up the rays and enjoy the demonstrations. This weekend, the Main Arena welcomed spectacular displays from the Patanavac Gundog Display, Thomas Longton’s Sheepdog Display, Ye Olde Redtail Falconry and Cyril the Squirrel. Whilst over in the Countryside EdenLocal

Arena, families and individuals were able to enjoy displays and demonstrations which included the Flyball Display Team, Chris ‘The Countryman’ Green as well as beautiful birds of prey from inside the Falconry classrooms. Countryman Fairs’ Chief Executive, Ian Harford, expresses his delight at another fantastic year. “We are so pleased to have been able to bring the Lowther Country Fair back for a second year. Speaking with many of you across the weekend, it is clear that Lowther’s return is most welcomed with both visitors and traders embracing its new look and feel and getting involved in all kinds of countryside demonstrations and activities. With Lowther now over for this year, and with only one more event to go for this season, we can’t wait to build on what we’ve created so far for next year and look forward to producing the finest set of countryside attractions in the UK!” The Midland Game Fair takes place over 15th and 16th September 2012. Countryman Fairs organise 5 award-winning events across the UK throughout the year, each showcasing the very best in country life. hound trailing by Margaret Baxter

Although hound trailing is a traditional Cumbrian sport which has been practised almost unchanged for well over 100 years, many local people know nothing about it. The hounds were originally bred from foxhounds, with maybe a touch of pointer and greyhound creeping in, making for a lean and comparatively light-boned and athletic animal, but there is definitely no suggestion of blood-sport now. The hounds follow an aniseed trail which has been laid over the fields and fells by the trailers, who drag the damp trail-rag. The senior hounds cover a distance of 8 - 10 miles, their time limits being 25 - 45 minutes, and the pups run for 4 -5 miles, their times to be between 15 - 25 minutes. The start of a trail is very exciting, with the hounds giving mouth and struggling to get on with the race, and the finish can be stressful for the owners as they look for their hounds and whistle and shout them home. Even after a long trail it can be close at the line, and a video camera is used nowadays to assist the judge. The season lasts from 1st April to 31st October, and there are 8 - 10 trailing meetings every week throughout the county. Most of these are in the evenings through the week, with afternoons on

EdenLocal

phone: 01768 899111

www.edenlocal.co.uk

Saturdays and Sundays. In addition, nearly all the local shows and sports meetings include hound trails, and they prove very popular with visitors, who have never seen anything like it! A champion hound may win around 40 races in a season, but there are always lower grades of trail for the less able hounds, because these provide the backbone of the sport - champions are rareities! The sport is governed by the Hound Trailing Association Ltd, with about 600 members. Each part of Cumbria has its own local committee, and all are represented on the Executive Committee. Every member has a say in how the sport is run, and women now play as much a part as men, both in committees and on the trail-fields themselves, all striving to do their best for the sport they love. The HTA’s website in www.houndtrailing.org.uk and the fixtures can be found on the News page, which is kept up-to-date. Further information can be obtained from the Secretary, telephone 017684 83686

Somewhere between Summer and Autumn?

The seasons don’t affect the opening hours only the conditions that you play in at the Penrith Golf Centre and Driving Range. Open all year except for a short Christmas break. We have a only few months now before the nights begin to draw in and then when the clocks go back, the lights will come on and the winter season begins. The undercover driving range allows you to keep improving your golf swing whilst you stay dry under cover during the day or night. As they prepare for winter they are now taking bookings for winter groups. You can bring a group of 8 or you can join a group. The centre caters for all standards and experience. The next event is the Paul Alcock Memorial Trophy which takes place Sunday 16th September, it’s a turn up on the day and play, more details below. Penrith Golf Centre and Driving Range is a facility which ticks all the boxes for the established golfer, for the beginner or for that person or group of people of whatever age that just want to get out more. There are many ways to describe distribution As a local business, a local group or a local resident with a great story or hobby that you would like to share, there are a number of ways you can communicate. For a business an investment in advertising is an investment in your future. As an individual actually getting your first piece of work published is a moment that you will want to last for ever. A piece of advice I give to all businesses contemplating a marketing strategy or currently involved in advertising is simply the importance of asking the question; “When you advertise in print what is the distribution?” Whilst some publications are sold and some distributed for free, the question always has to be “but how many?” Don’t just ask for the average, ask for the actual figures for the last six or twelve months. Ask for clarity regarding the geographical area that the publication is distributed in and how. With a paid for publication its effective distribution isn’t just how many are printed, it’s how many were actually sold. With a free publication there could be two questions; “How many were distributed for collection” and “How many were collected and how is this monitored”. If it is posted how reliable is it and who posts the publication.

Inspiral carpets Little Barrie

The Feud Gamu Nhengu

The sun has once again come out for the last weekend in July, yes its Kendal Calling time again, and this year the international line up is stronger than ever, but for me it’s the 90’s bands I want to see, I mean Inspiral Carpets, James, Shed Seven, Dodgy and Feeder on the same bill.

So the weekend begins Friday lunch time, and its over to the Deer Park for a few days “in the fields” after getting sorted with the relevant accreditation it was time to catch some music, so it was over to a new tent for this years festival The Chai Wallahs tent, and to catch Lucy Rose, a name I keep hearing, ironically I’d just been listening to her on the car radio travelling over. Well she certainly had a good following, the tent was rammed, starting with a folkie number then picking up the pace with a bit of soft rock. I also noticed ex Razorlight guitarist Bjorn Agren part of the band…..Lucy Rose a name watch out for. As the sun was setting of the deer park, everyone was in fine spirit anxiously waiting for Sunderland’s Maximo Park, Paul Smith (lead singer) ran onto stage, energetic as ever, jumping up his mic stand to some awesome lighting, belting out classics like Our Velocity, Books From Boxes and Apply Some Pressure. What a way to close day one.

Scrouplious Pip

Saturday afternoon Dodgy set the scene with some classic Britpop sounds, what better way to lounge around in the sun, with some Staying Out For The Summer and Good Enough, with most folk over Shed Seven

30 singing along. A quick nip over to The Calling Out Tent to catch Kendal’s finest The Feud with the explosive, high octane rock sounds, with Jamie (guitar) sporting glasses similar to Timmy Mallets. Back to the main stage and Scottish rockers The View delivered an excellent set, and warmed the crowd up for a Kendal Calling favourite Dizzee Rascal, last time he graced the KC stage, he was flown in from Ibiza, did his set then flown back to the White Isle, how’s that for commitment? Well it seems every one of the 13000 people were down to see Dizzee and his Bonkers carry on. With pyrotechnics, and a very special light and laser show, it was a spectacular affair, the atmosphere was electric, with thousands of smiling faces bouncing. Dizzee had travelled up from the Olympic Park where he performed at the opening ceremony, and debuted his Olympic song Scream. What better way to shake off that “light head” on a Sunday afternoon, yes KC regulars The Lancashire

Hotpots, pulling the best daytime crowds all weekend, with lots of crowd participation, at one point they had the full arena doing the conga. American rockers were up next We Are Scientist, with front man Keith having to wear two coats due to being cold…warmest day of 2012 for Cumbria, well sun and no rain anyway. For me it was the next trio of bands I was waiting to see, and most folk born in the 70’s. 90’s legends The Inspiral Carpets kicked it off and the Boon Army was out in force, Clint didn’t disappoint playing the socks off that Farfisa Organ. A quick bite form one of the amazing organic food outlets, before catching Feeder then James closed the weekend. James was emphatic as ever dropping all of his classics, everybody singing along, he even managed a crowd surf, what a legend, what a weekend. A great event in the Eden Valley.. until next time …. See you in the fields.

And Finally...... I always have a good feeling when I get to this page and knowing that I have arrived at the end of another publication. Looking at the score board this is the 30th publication to date from Cumbria Local Publishers including our sister Lakes Local magazine and the other supplements. This month Eden Local welcomes 6 new businesses to our list of advertisers and in order to produce two publications in a week we have had a total of 9 writers involved-my thanks to you all.

October with the last day for booking advertisements and articles into the October edition being the 10th September. As a reminder our print run will be increasing to 23,500 from our November edition with delivery from 5th November 2012 of which approximately 23,262 copies will be distributed via Royal Mail to every residential and business letter box in postcodes CA4 9, CA4 0, CA10, CA11 and CA16. This leaves just one last distribution before Christmas which will begin on 3rd December.

So what comes next, well it’s on to a bit of website updating and then I will be discussing with Eden FM the feasibility of having all the publications as audio files. We’ll be officially moving into our new Lakes Local office at Burns, near Keswick over the next few weeks. Onwards and upwards; I’ll now be working on three publications this time next month, lining up the fourth for 2013

For more details on distribution and booking schedules please go to www.cumbrianlocal. co.uk ;there is a link on our website to plot our distribution. As every new letter box appears the Eden Local distribution increases. As a reminder and for our new readers all past and present publications are available to read on line free also via our website and hard copies of most past issues are also available to collect.

The Eden Local October edition will commence delivery from Monday 1st

Thank you once again for taking the time out to read your Eden Local
