Welcome to the September edition of your Eden Local Hours before we print the Eden Local, I get some time out to reflect on what we have for you this month. I look back over the month, check out what’s current which can go in last minute and I am already thinking about what we have coming up in October. Producing a publication that goes to print within 6 days and 15,500 copies are being posted through doors by local people in the community is always an achievement in itself. Having a local businesses supporting it and local charities and voluntary groups contributing towards its editorial helps it to be the community magazine it is and it motivates me to keep those wheels turning. It almost passed me by, but the 100th Cumbrian Local publication, as it is not just the Eden Local we produce went out to a much smaller audience on 19th August. It was our 4th Penrith AFC Community match day programme against Whitley Bay, which after a 1 – 1 draw at the Frenchfield Park Stadium on that Saturday went to a replay on the Tuesday. I travelled on one of two mini buses for the replay which with 10 minutes to go to the full time whistle meant we were through to the next round. If only, because moments later after the Bonny Blues hit the Whitley Bay cross bar, the home team had drawn level and in the dying minutes won. As programme editor for the Bonny Blues, I am back in the ups and downs of football. On page 30 is a real lift with Karl Collinsons report for the Guisborough Town match played at the Frenchfield Park stadium 2nd September.. Football isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. The Eden Local, Eden FM, Penrith Town Council and Penrith AFC, which I am involved in only exist because of a lot of dedicated people that volunteer more than just a few hours a week to make things happen. It’s worth thinking about, how you use your time and if you can

spare a few hours a week helping a voluntary group, how much pressure it takes off that group because so many are just surviving. As we head into September, recently we’ve seen the heavy dew on the grass and already the leaves are turning, before they start tumbling. I’ve chosen this month’s magazine to look back over some of the events of the summer that I’ve covered for the magazine and the radio. It’s been a busy one with so many things on and as you’ll see in this 101st publication, the months ahead are going to be even busier with the projects I am involved in. As a family we did get a week away in Seahouses, up on the Northumbrian coast. No messing about at airports this year, no mobile signal, limited internet, no supermarkets, no fast food chains. White sandy beaches and sand dunes, fantastic weather and just a few hours away, total relaxation. One of the weird things was this chap with his family like us was out for a walk. We were going one way, he the other; the casual hello from him and his wife, then we walked on and Charlotte said, that’s Neil Morrissey, as in Men Behaving Badly actor, the voice many children grew up with of Bob the Builder, from 1998 for 16 years. Well in the age of ‘selfies’ via the mobile phone, it was an opportunity, but I had my camera around my neck so the moment was there, but I thought, we’re on holiday, they’re on holiday; would you really want people taking your picture? So we just got on with our holiday. Seahouses is a small place. Over the next few days we couldn’t stop seeing him! Back into work mode, I always have highlights of my month and August was full of them for me; the holiday being one, but it will be the month I see as meeting so many people in so many different networks. This is reflected in this edition of your Eden Continued on page 5

Local, which I know will have a larger reach this month across Cumbria and areas in the UK, through its online readership, but also in its new readers in parts of Appleby and the areas around, but also Carlisle. So picked up for the first time, welcome to those new readers. Next month your Eden Local will be published on line around 3rd October. Distribution will start on or around 5th October, subject to weather it takes around 7 to 10 days to get the deliveries out. I’ll remind you of course that the clocks will be going back, but on the subject of the weather, in last month’s Eden Local, we covered the story ‘And then the rain came’ that related to the repeated flooding of sewerage into Wetheriggs Park, which is used daily by dog walkers, families locally and visitors to the town. Following on from the report, I did meet with some dog walkers and Eden District Councillor Adrian Todd, communities Portfolio holder and we did take a walk around the park. At present there is not much to report but a thank you to Adrian, for getting on the case and the matter as it stands has progressed to a letter from Rory Stewart MP to United Utilities. Hopefully more on this next month. August for around 4,000 people of all ages did finish on a high at the Wannasee Festival, in Hutton in the Forest. The main feature of this magazine now shared is that Wannasee experience of this sell out bank holiday event. I took over 1200 images and between me and my youngest Daisy we got about 30 clips of film. A lot of these are available to view on the Cumbrian Local Facebook page and free to download. Until next month please enjoy your Eden Local. Lee Quinn

New studio for Eden FM in Carlisle computers and lights on because for any station to be successful it has to be seen and not just heard in the community, it has to be active and engage with the community it serves.

Eden Dunn, Stephen Dunn, Nigel Peacock

Recently, I was asked a question related to the origin of the name Eden for Eden FM radio and Eden Local, the main cover of the Cumbrian Local Publications. It’s not a mystery. We are in the Eden valley, we are in the Eden District. But that’s not the reason, it is simply based on the River Eden. Regional branding is very important; this I learnt from a previous project. The first community radio station I set up was called Meridian FM and the first real glossy publication I produced for the company you see now, was called Meridian Sport and Events in 2007. The publication was linked to a Tuesday night and Saturday afternoon Sports and Events show on Meridian FM. The radio studio was based in a town council building on the top floor in an attic room. The building itself probably bigger than Mansion House here in Penrith, it was an 18th Century Grade II listed building, built in 1867 that was restored in the 1980s by the Town Council. A hub of the community, running through its grounds was the Greenwich Meridian Line. So here we are in Cumbria with studios and an office in the EdenLocal

centre of Penrith at Mostyn Hall in Friargate, our new neighbours the Penrith Town Council directly opposite. Our facility is manned at some point most days and if required it can be remotely run from a mobile phone. Remote in a different context and sparse are words I’ve heard a lot about areas of the Eden Valley. To maintain our 24 hour transmission coving the area where we need to reach either on 107.5 FM, online or via mobile devices, however, we do need more volunteers; at least three times the amount of people that we currently have in order to deliver the service we provide 365 days of the year. It’s not just presenting, we need about 50-60 people in Cumbria from all back grounds and of all ages! Like many businesses and voluntary groups, we’ve experienced the cuts in public transport. We lost presenters and their shows when we lost weekend buses at key times, then more when the buses just stopped. To overcome this, we set up some presenters remotely at home. This was an unbudgeted cost but essential in keeping the station on air. In addition to this, in order to survive, since 2011 we had to do more than just switch a few

The magazine that relies on doors for circulation not sales

We are out most weeks, sometimes as many as three times. So we take the radio out in to the community any time of day or night, which is something the BBC or commercial stations can’t do as much. We have the challenge of reaching one of the most sparsely populated areas of England and we want to have a local voice live on the local radio for as many hours of the day as we can fill. Eden is the brand and in 2016 Eden FM tested its transmission in Appleby and in Alston, but more recently on 24th August we did our first live transmission in Carlisle. In the space of 3 days, one phone call, one email, then Nigel Peacock and I from Eden FM met Stephen and Eden Dunn at the Old Fire Station where Stephen is the Arts Officer for Carlisle City Council and Eden Dunn is the IT person who wears a few more hats in the recording studio at the Old Fire Station. Within an hour and a half, we had agreed to set up a studio in an attic room/room in the roof currently used for storage in this wonderful old building that has been steadily developing as an amazing venue. This somehow seemed very familiar as the door opened to a little room with a window facing out into Warwick Street. Originally opened in 1898, the Old Fire Station is now an arts and entertainment centre, home to a variety of events and McGrews Bistro. To cement this new venture into a reality, we

list was community based radio; to see it now start happening is superb”.

opened the flight case of the Eden FM pop up studio and we did a live transmission. The content of this transmission was the project that was broadcast on 107.5 FM from the transmitter in Penrith. Below the room housing the new Eden FM studio is a recording studio. Next door to the studio is a green room. What could possibly come next?

So Eden FM prepares to extend further down the River Eden. Would you like to be a volunteer helping set up the new studio at the Old Fire Station and help this not for profit organisation deliver live radio from Carlisle? Of course the idea of a live bands show from Carlisle is exciting, following the afternoon show from Penrith the Drive home from Carlisle is equally exciting. So why stop there?

But when spontaneous things like this happen, do you ever wonder how did we get there? It had all happened in three weeks and I had a holiday in the middle of that. Prior to the meeting I was in Penrith, in Angel Lane at the Eclectic shop talking to Peter the owner about the radio and a customer joined in and said “Are you talking about Eden FM?” Vince White from Carlisle was that man who asked the question. It turns out that he is an established presenter and his speciality is Motown and Northern Soul. He added “Dunny who runs the Old Fire Station would love to have a community radio in Carlisle” and that is how these things happen. I asked Stephen Dunn his thoughts on this innovative and sudden idea during the discussion we had that day on air from the Old Fire Station. In case you missed it, in his words: “The partnership with Eden FM is very exciting, not only for the Old Fire Station but for Carlisle in general. From so many angles it will develop and positively enhance the many creative things that are happening in the area.

I am pleased to announce that Eden FM will be broadcasting live from 10 – 12 Wednesday 20th September from the Old Fire Station. Let’s take this a step further in isolating isolation. With your help we would like a small studio in Alston and Appleby and with the help of enthusiastic people we could achieve this before 2018. With the right support and funding, our programme schedule from 2018 on a typical day in the week could be like this:

As a venue and as a City we’re always looking at how to make our all round promotion and marketing bigger and better. Eden FM will give us a potential global audience. It’s also fantastic that the station offers great opportunities for local DJ’s to learn and develop. This will add to our ever growing creative industry. The ability to highlight and stream shows from the old fire station is really exciting. It just adds another massive element to the all round offer. From the start, one of the big things on our wish EdenLocal

Ray meets Access Forum to talk disability sports

Sport and activities for people with disabilities are top of the agenda for the next meeting of the Eden Access Forum taking place at the Whelpdale Room in Eden District Council’s Mansion House offices in Penrith on Thursday 14 September 2017 from 2.30pm. So anyone with an interest in developing or taking part in sport and physical activity for disabled people, whether individuals, organisations or groups is welcome to attend. EdenLocal

Ray McBride currently runs wheelchair basketball and power chair football sessions at Penrith Leisure Centre, but wants to extend the range of opportunity for disabled sport in Eden. Ray said: “I would like to introduce my work in disability sport in Cumbria, get a feel of what activities may already be available locally and discuss ideas for new activities and clubs from interested individuals, groups and organisations in Eden.”

Griffin Accountants

ASAP Accountancy Services have served small businesses and individuals in the Penrith area for almost twenty years. They held their customers in such high regard they knew they had to look for the perfect match to carry the business forward to expand the practice and take on the challenge facing the industry over the coming years. They searched far and wide to do so. The perfect match they found indeed in Griffin Accountants, a South Manchester based practice who they merged with in the summer of 2016. Mike Griffiths, Senior Partner of Griffin Accountants has specialised in serving small to medium businesses and individuals for over three decades, primarily throughout South Manchester. Mr Griffiths has taken a hands on approach to the merger, spending half the week in the Penrith office to give the attention required to take the business forward and provide personal service to clients. “I knew straight away that it was the right fit”, said Griffiths. “My core belief is in personal service and working with our clients, not only providing assistance with their accountancy requirements but also developing strategy to achieve the goals they set out to achieve. Suzanne has built a fantastic practice here that I feel we can really add value to. I am also pleased that she will be staying on with us along with her staff.” EdenLocal

Christine Armstrong has also joined the team on a full time basis to ensure client workload is dealt with in a timely manner. The joint practice has relocated from its offices on the edge of town to newly refurbished premises at 11 Devonshire Street, Penrith, Cumbria, CA11 7SR. The merged entity will now be known as Griffin Accountants following a launch party in August. Many existing clients, potential new clients and members of the financial community attended, keen to learn more about the practice. “I believed it was important we have a presence in the heart of the business community”, Mr Griffiths said when asked for the reason for the move. Suzanne Stirland, the Senior Partner of ASAP cited the exponential growth of the company and the rapid changes in accountancy technology involved in providing the best service as her main reasons for looking to merge. Griffin Accountants already serves a large number of clients out of their Manchester site so encompassing the client base of ASAP in the Penrith office is something they are well prepared for as they already have the infrastructure and staff in place to account for any growth. Wannasee, Wannasee book early for 2018! By Lee Quinn

In 2014 the Wannasee team staged their first Wannasee event at the Heritage Stadium, Bishop Auckland, home of the football club. Based on the success of this, in 2015 the team raised the bar and staged two Wannasee events that were Bishop Auckland and Penrith.

wannaseefestival.com on the galleries section, you can see the story in pictures of how one event in 2014 grew to three events in 2016. In between the May bank holiday event at Bishop Auckland and the August bank holiday event at Penrith, a one day event was added in Huddersfield in mid-July.

So in 2015 Wannasee came to the Frenchfield Stadium with the very finest tributes to the World’s greatest artists. You can still look up the pictures of the event on the Wannasee website, courtesy of David Langley Photography, who I was fortunate to meet at this year’s Wannasee festival.

An anticipated growth in the event, for local people and visitors to the area it meant that after one year at Frenchfield, the Wannasee Festival was moved to Hutton in the Forest in 2016 to the familiar ground used by the Skelton Show.

I am a firm believer that a picture paints a thousand words and at

Wannasee event, as I stood with one of the founders of Wannasee, John Brannan at Hutton in the Forest and looked at a mass of families, numbers had more than doubled, closer to three times the number from 2015, we reflected on how this event had become what it had, how it had developed, how it’s popularity had grown, because in a very short time it had become established as a festival that set out to do exactly what it had consistently said it would. It had created a festival which is all about the very best live music, in a family-friendly festival atmosphere at real value for money prices. I’m no photographer and I’m no writer. I have a drum kit in the loft that hasn’t seen daylight in 8 years and a violin that hasn’t been out of its case in a very long time. I’m no musician, but I do love music and I love just taking pictures. I do have great respect for any performer and musician that takes to the stage and can make a living from it. I have friends in bands that travel most weekends in the hope that the gig will

cover the travel cost and they’ve been doing it for many years. Whilst I’ve mentioned too many times that I have seen some of the best bands in the world, lived the dream of seeing Freddie Mercury in the Crazy Tour in 1979, I played the air guitar to Status Quo in 1979, in 1982 and in 2017 I saw the pioneers of electronic music, Kraftwerk. Sadly there are many I missed, but some I still might see. ELO recently was amazing. I bought the ‘Out of the Blue’ album in 1977. I had always wanted to see them and never had. In the year of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977, Queen’s ‘News of the World’ album was released. In my record box from that same year, Trans-Europe Express - Kraftwerk, Never Mind the Bollocks - Here’s the Sex Pistols, The Sound of Bread – Bread (no idea how that landed there!), David Bowie – Heroes, Meat Loaf – Bat out of Hell, the Stranglers - No More Heroes, Bob Marley & the Wailers - Exodus, Abba The Album and This is the Modern World - The Jam, what a confused kid. Many of the greats have gone. Many no longer perform. Some do but maybe we would prefer to see them as we remembered them in their earlier days. Some at whatever age they are, can certainly still cut it! The Wannasee experience for me, which I’ll share was seen from various different angles and perspectives. I talked to hundreds of complete strangers behind the stage and in the crowd. I got to see the artists, some of them transformed into a different era and not recognisable. I watched some from the time they arrived. You knew who they were and behind stage they had a belief in who they were, a tribute to which I have to say was 100%. I was able to mix with everyone and I had some great conversations after the performances. Many of them went out into the crowd afterwards and some during their performances!

In the modern world as children, talking as a dad, not a grandparent, we may have idolised sports personalities, singers, writers, actors, bands, TV personalities etc. The people I met behind the stage went on the stage and took it to a platform of living and sharing that dream of something they felt passionate about. After meeting so many people I asked a lot of questions. I linked with loads of people behind and in front of the Wannasee stage. I spent quite a lot of time talking to Gary Clarke the lead singer in the Cure Heads and I asked a few him some questions. This is what he said:

Why do you do it? I can't not do it anymore. It's my hobby and I'd feel a bit left out if I saw someone else suddenly start trying to do it. Also everyone seems to have settled with the idea that Coldplay, Ed Sheeran and Adele are "okay" they aren't and wouldn't have gotten a look in in the 1980s. They are mediocre at best. Doing what we do gives kids a chance to see that there is edgy music out there and remind people our age that there is hope that music can be good again one day. Can you imagine how boring it is to be a rock star now with just that lot to hang out with? How do you do it? I was a huge fan of the Cure when I was a kid and was also a goth which came in handy because I got loads of practice in dressing like Robert. The voice is totally put on, it's nothing like my own voice when I record my own music. I have actually released 2 albums under the name The Hiram Key which are on iTunes somewhere. It took me a year to record each of them because I had to get the Robert out of my voice and find my own voice again. I’m told I move like Robert onstage but I think that comes from watching the videos obsessively as a kid. Why the Cure? I was busking around Europe with an Interrail ticket in 1990 and

all I knew were Cure and Mission songs, oh and a couple of New Model Army tunes. It sort of grew from there. First stage at 12.30 not an easy slot? The first slot of the day at a festival is traditionally the hardest and it's very odd to play Cure music in the sunlight. But beggars can't be choosers and we always feel blessed to be allowed to get on a huge stage and play our guitars really loud anywhere or any time. We are just a Chef, a couple of IT technicians and an estate agent "and tonight Mathew we are going to be The Cure". We are not really important so we couldn't really give a hoot what time we play a festival. But if they do want to move us up the bill and give us blue M&Ms and posh Cornish pasties in the dressing rooms next time, we won't argue and will be even more excited to be there. You went out there and nailed it, how? The audience nailed it by getting out of bed and supporting the first band of the day. We just did what we do as best we could. There's something very warm about proper northern audiences. They want you to do well. I took lots of crowd shots and one family who I didn’t know until the day before print shared with me their thoughts after seeing their

17-25 - New Issues! By Emily Quinn

help explain what these things mean and how you deal with them.

In entering adulthood and doing various new things, I’ve discovered some new risks. Maybe they were always there? But it’s only recently they’ve arisen as an issue to my friends and me. They include responsibility, drugs and proper nights out. It might sound crazy, but my perception of it is that when you become a young adult, the world becomes a little bit darker. If anything, it’s probably the time you need your elders’ influence. After trying to get them off your case for the last few years, you need them to actually guide you and point you in the right direction! So, the issue of responsibility. Suddenly you’re left in charge and named “the responsible adult”. I don’t think I’ll ever be the responsible adult! Why grow up when you can stay young and never grow up? (mentally anyway). I can be trusted though, that’s the difference. For example, if I need to look after my younger sister or make dinner or make EdenLocal

sure everything around the house gets done, I will make sure everything happens smoothly. The difference being that me and my friends have fun when we go out, whereas others may just over do it and end up in trouble. Obviously if someone became unwell, we’d help them, but I find, whenever you start out as a group on a night out, it’s a challenge to keep an eye on everyone and get through the night together. Responsibility can be so many things though. Trying to play ‘the mother’ of the friendship group is just one example. There are finances, health care plans, insurance policies and the welfare of you and others to worry about. Suddenly you realise you have to grow up and take charge of so much more. The important thing to remember though is it’s not that scary! There is always help and advice for you, whether it’s guidance from your parents or advice from the professionals. There is always someone to

The magazine that relies on doors for circulation not sales

As well as new responsibility, I’ve been in situations that they try and scare you with in school, namely the destructive effects of drugs and alcohol. The dangers, as I’ve found out, are very real. I have found myself in very testing situations, have seen the effects of these things on others and so I reckon what teachers tell you is a warning. You need to be smart and really look out for yourself and your friends. The responsibility involved in looking out for one another connects nicely to my next point, which is going out on the town and the risk of drugs. I’ve seen it, witnessed it, even been victim to it and I can assure you, drinks being spiked is a real thing and if you’ve not got real friends around you, it’s a massive potential problem. Terrible things can happen. The transition from going out on a student night to being able to go out all the time is really quite a step up. It’s a completely different vibe all together. On a night out, particularly around people older than you’re used to on one of the student nights, especially for the first few times, is a very different experience. You’re one of the youngest people there and potentially one of the most

vulnerable. If someone wants to buy you a drink, for example, I would advise going with them to the bar and making sure you’re the one that takes the drink from the person behind the bar. It’s just basic things like that. The problem being when you’ve had a few too many, you don’t have your wits about you; that’s why it’s always good to have a friend or two in the group who isn’t drinking to keep an eye on things. Me and my friends alternate and still all of us have a good time. Those not drinking just tend to laugh hysterically at those who are, but it’s all good fun! So that’s a briefing on some of those ‘new things’, early adulthood is testing us on. Responsibility being the big thing which is always from now on, in the back of our minds. Next month will be very much along the same lines. Let’s face it, there’s a lot of things to get through!

Penrith Rotary 10K Trail Run and 4K Fun Run - Lowther Castle & Park

One of three Rotary clubs in the Eden District the Penrith club is part of a huge volunteer organisation with a membership of more than 1.2 million across the world. The clubs help the community in their local areas and raise funds for good causes. In Penrith these include Hospice, Air Ambulance and Mencap but members also work with local schools to support and develop young people. The ever popular Rotary 10Km Trail Run (for ages 15 & above), and 4Km Fun Run will take place this year on Sunday 8 October 2017, starting and finishing at the fabulous Lowther Castle with its tea room, shop and other attractions. The Trail Run, starting at 11.15am, follows a superb one lap course amid the wonderful scenery of Lowther Park, on grass, farm tracks and tarmac. The Fun Run starts at 10.30am (14 yrs and under) and comprises an attractive 2 lap course on tracks and grass right in front of Lowther Castle. Medals will be awarded in various categories for both runs while prizes/mementoes will be given in the Fun run section. Event organiser Rotarian Stephen Lindley said, “This really is a remarkable event. It was introduced in 2009 as a community occasion where people could run in lovely countryside, seriously or for fun or where funds could be raised for favoured charities. Perhaps, EdenLocal

because of the fantastic venue and setting, people of all ages and abilities now take part, club runners from far and wide but also many who just enjoy jogging in lovely countryside. Participants describe their enjoyment of the most scenic views of any race they’ve done. The fun run too has gone from strength to strength; we have children running hand-in-hand with their parents whilst some young aspiring athletes like to have a proper go. Some of the local junior schools also enter teams.” The event takes place with the kind permission of the Lowther Estate. As an event special offer, this year on race day only, they are offering, for any adult taking part in the 10k Trail Run, free admission for 1 child (15 or under) to Lowther Castle and Gardens on presentation of their Trail Run runner number, (adult to pay full entrance price). To be sure, everyone will be delighted by the garden’s history as well as the recently installed lost castle, an impressively large wooden structure built high in the tree-canopy, deep into the garden woods. As a place for the imagination, it has a magic all of its own. Full information including the timing of each event and online entry details can be found at: www.penrithrotarytrailrun.org.uk

The Ullswater Way Wainwright installations The 20-mile Ullswater Way was inaugurated in 2016 and for the past year, the Society has been working with the Friends of the Ullswater Way on the placing of two ‘installations’ to mark Alfred Wainwright’s love of the area. In June this year, a small group of Society members joined with representatives of the Friends to unveil the two pieces of artwork. The first was at Patterdale where a slate plaque affixed to the wall of the post office reads: ‘Patterdale Post Office was the first shop to sell copies of Wainwright’s guidebooks.’ The post office was the first place he sold his books and in 1955 he took copies of his newly-published book, The Eastern Fells to the shop and asked the then owner, Mr Dawson, if he would be willing to sell the book. The plaque and the second piece, the Sitting Stone were carved by local artist, Jimmy Reynolds. Following the ceremony, there was a walk back to Glenridding to hop on the Ullswater boat for the trip to Howtown. From here, there was a walk along the bridleway at the foot of Bonscale Pike and Arthur’s Pike to the spot where Wainwright drew a sketch of Ullswater, depicted in The Far Eastern Fells: Arthur’s Pike p. 3. A much larger group had gathered here with a celebratory

glass of wine and nibbles brought up by a local farmer on his quad bike and trailer! The Sitting Stone is a large piece of slate rock with space for two or three people to sit and admire the view of Ullswater. The quotation on the stone, ‘that loveliest of lakes, Ullswater, curving gracefully into the distance …’ comes from A Coast to Coast Walk p. 44. These installations are just two of a number that are being placed at points along the Ullswater Way Heritage Trail to commemorate

the history and people that have a connection with Ullswater. More information can be found on the website of the Friends: www. ullswaterway.co.uk www.wainwright.org.uk/calendar/ index.html Further donations will be given to Fix the Fells from sales of the Society’s 2018 Calendar, which goes on sale later in the year. Richard and his team proved to have a great deal of skill and expertise between them with a determined and creative approach to any unforeseen problems that arose. The new roof progressed smoothly and quickly despite the notorious Cumbrian weather. They were polite, friendly and considerate. they did a great job and they cleared up and whisked away the rubble afterwards. We can't praise them enough. Richard came and got the job done and saved us money. On tour - What a summer? On 1st July, it was Eden FM’s first live broadcast from the Skelton Show in a while; technology had moved on since our first appearance at the show in either 2012 or 2013, when the challenge was to transmit a single back to Penrith. This year we had an internet connection! The following weekend, 9th July I was back out with Eden FM broadcasting live from the Inner Bailey of Appleby Castle, in between taking over 500 pictures of one of the best carnivals I have seen in many years. In the week that followed it really got busy. On Tuesday 11th July, my first AFC Football programme went on sale for the Carlisle United friendly. I was there again with The Eden FM team for another live broadcast of the match.

Spent in and out of Cumbria, I certainly did some travelling away from work, but from Monday 1st May to 31st August I covered some ground. The Lions May Fair on 1st May was a huge event this year. It was great to be there and take some time out in between the County Elections. I’m looking forward to meeting the Lions later this month to talk about the next May fair and all the events they have coming up. I attended the Langwathby May Day (20th May) on behalf of Eden FM. It was the perfect village and community event. Meanwhile away from work, I squeezed in a few concerts, a quick trip to Lincoln Showground on 27th May, Brunton Park on 2nd June, Glasgow on 9th June and Wembley Stadium on 24th June! EdenLocal

TERRY’S DEAL OF THE MONTH Four days later, on the tour of duty for Eden FM, we were back in Penrith, an early start for Penrith On a Plate for a full day broadcast. With no invitation to the Penrith show, we all had a weekend off at the end of July and a well-deserved rest as volunteers until Saturday 5th August when we were once again live at Frenchfield Stadium where I shared the match commentary with Karl Collinson, club mascot Bradley Hodgson and Scott Jackson, returning there again for the match commentary on 19th August. The end of the Eden FM summer roadshow saw us split up as we covered the Dufton show and I was of course with Daisy at Wannasee, covering the story and planning for 2018. I would like to thank so many people on behalf of the Eden FM team for the invitations and congratulations to all those volunteers behind the scenes that staged some fantastic days this Summer. Fingers crossed that with the ‘travelling billboard’ outside broadcasting vehicle, being seen in so many places most weeks of the year, we will get a sponsor when someone’s looking at their marketing fund for 2018!

Bonny Blues Update by Karl Collinson

foul him as he tried to beat his third opponent. Chris Wraighte played a telling ball down the right flank to Murray from the resulting free kick, Murray again skipped past 2 helpless defenders and squared the ball to the penalty spot where Jamie Street flicked the ball home for his second of the game.

© Ben France

Penrith seemed to relax after that and let Guisborough enjoy plenty of possession which only resulted in a couple of long range efforts which found goalkeeper Stuart Dixon continuing in his impressive early season form. The visitors were handed the chance to get on the score sheet when the referee pointed to the spot, to the dismay of the Frenchfield Park crowd. Steele stepped up and calmly side footed the ball into the corner giving Dixon no chance.

The Bonny Blues recorded their first league victory thanks to 3 quick fire goals past a sluggish Guisborough outfit. It took only 4 minutes for Chris Wraighte to mesmerise 2 defenders on the left wing and pull the ball back to Jamie Street who cut inside the box and unleashed a left foot shot which found the far bottom corner. The visitors' came close when they were awarded a free kick 40 yards out and Lewis Maloney expertly struck the ball and it smashed into the crossbar but the visiting striker couldn't control his header into the gaping goal.

Penrith played the rest of the game on the counter attack as both wide men, Wraighte and Hebson, looked dangerous every time they received the ball. Final score 4 – 1 to the Bonny Blues. It was almost a perfect afternoon's work for Jim Nichols' men as local boy Brandon Robertson also made his debut for the Bonny Blues. With captain Grant Davidson and Tyler Bowman retuning from holiday, Nichols expects his team to start climbing the Northern League Division 1 table as he's able to pick more of a settled side in the upcoming fixtures.

It was the impressive Wraighte again who received the ball out wide, got past his defender with a step over and drilled the ball across goal where top scorer Jonny Murray slid in to add the final touch. The 3rd goal soon came as Robbie Hebson swung in a left footed corner and Dean Rae leapt like a salmon to nod the ball home from 8 yards.
