Dear Residents Welcome to your Eden Local. It’s been another busy month as we move into the Summer. Out on the school run the other day, I was in a queue of traffic on the slip road, which I suppose is meant to be a by-pass, although it is more like the Khyber Pass at the moment! I looked up at the brown information sign that said Eden Valley. Looking around me, I thought I was in ‘Silly Cone Valley’! So moving on, unlike the traffic these days, it’s our ninth edition of Eden Local and our first Summer supplement, ‘Eating Out In Eden’, has now been distributed. My thanks to Paul, my neighbour next door but one, for doing most of the delivery to about 150 distribution sites. As a family business, we have taken a step in improving our work life balance and have decided to open an Eden Local office in Penrith at 33 Sandgate. It is close enough to the town, although I’m not sure if the waist might suffer as it’s next door to Eden House of Cakes! If I can get through the strain of that, I’m sure it will be shattered when the bakery next door starts baking. Of course with Maggie back, it does mean that we’ll also have a Eden House of Bread and Rolls! In this month’s article, we are not short of good news and new businesses signing up with the Eden’s only free magazine, posted through 14,240 doors and free to read on the internet. Please try out the internet. Of course if you get this through your door, you might not feel the need to log on, but interestingly, over 200 locations across the UK do log on and read Eden Local and over 20 countries now read the magazine. All this information is on our site at www.edenlocal.co.uk.

So, just to answer a few questions. One of my neighbours, Pam, said she loves the magazine, but can I write on the articles who has written them. Well, we are always looking for writers. Bekah writes the gardening articles and Mike writes his piece as well. Clare Savins gives us the regular update with the World Sheep Dog Trials. UCC and QEGS have their own writers and we do, when we can fit in other writer’s pieces as well. That leaves me to do the rest The ‘Naga’ in the Masala at the moment, so if it hasn’t got a name on it, it’s yours truly! Launched by Eden Local, the CA Business New Stone on the Block Directory has taken its first steps and details are Sowing the seed at Carleton on page 14. Following on from a meeting with more Eden FM radio volunteers, the application has now Summer Salads been sent to Ofcom for a temporary licence. The Murder Mystery advertising rate card has been released for the radio and more details are available at www.edenfm.co.uk. Learn to Past and Learn to Drive Prices start at just £10, yes £10! Community radio Eden House of Handbags isn’t for profit, it’s for the community and there is an update on page 23.

Last month, I mentioned that Eden Local isn’t apart of the Eden District Council. It seems to have worked as there haven’t been any more calls about potholes and planning! This month, I spent 10 minutes convincing a lady, that just because she received an Eden Local the same day as her local paper, the magazine was not a free supplement from her local paper. Delivered by Royal Mail, the magazine is delivered door to door. During its delivery schedule, it is delivered by your postman between Monday and Saturday.

From the chopping board to the table Another month and that regular trip to Indiagate. It’s another instalment of ‘from the chopping board to the table’. In last month’s article, we focused on ‘Nigella Sativa’ better known as Black Cumin and our article featured Jeera Alu. Jeera meaning black Cumin and Alu meaning potato, staying with the ingredients theme this month, we look into a key ingredient and its origin. This month from the chopping board to the table is Naga Masala. It’s one of eight dishes that has a three chilli logo next to it on the menu. In my conversation with Abu, the proprietor of Indiagate, this month we weren’t focusing on the dish, but the key ingredient Naga, which is Indian for Cobra, but unlike Chicken Masala, Naga is not snake on the menu, but represents the bite of a Cobra! There are over 400 varieties of chillies grown around the world. They were cultivated in Central and South America and the West Indies for thousands of years
before the Spanish conquest, which eventually introduced them to the rest of the world. Today they are generally grown in the Far East, China, Japan, Thailand , Indonesia, India and Mexico. It was in 1902 that Wilbur Scoville developed a method for measuring the strength of capsicum in a given pepper, which originally meant tasting a diluted version of a pepper and giving it a value. Nowadays, it can be done more accurately with the help of computers to rate the peppers in Scoville units, which indicate parts per million of capsaicin. The fiery sensation of chillies is caused by capsaicin, a potent chemical that survives both cooking and freezing, but apart from the burning sensation, it also triggers the brain to produce endorphins, natural painkillers that promote a sense of well being. The Scoville scale begins at zero with mild bell peppers and moves to the lower range of peppers measuring 1,500 to 2,500 such as cascabels, four out of ten. The Jalapeño is mid range at about 2,500 to 5,000 Scoville units.
The eight out of ten chillies such as cayenne, aji and pequin will rate about 30,000 to 50,000 units, while the habernero which rates as one of the hottest, comes somewhere between 100,00 and 500,000 units, but as you can see from the research below, a hotter chilli has been found. The growing of chillies has become very competitive and with all the research I have done, this was quite eye watering! At the start of the millennium, the hottest chilli In the world was claimed to be in India. The pepper called Naga Jolokia from the north-eastern area of Assam where it was grown, beat the Mexican Red Savina Habanero, widely-acclaimed as the hottest. It was reported to be 855,000 Scoville units of pure capsaicin. Looking through press releases, this has been challenged, usually around the first of the month in April since that date. One claim was for the world’s hottest chilli pepper in Dorset. The Dorset Naga on the scale at 923,000SHU’s. But where is the ‘hottest’ claim for the hottest chilli? Not India and not Mexico, in fact the hottest Chilli known as the Naga Viper, hits an astonishing 1,359,000 on the Scoville scale and it is grown here in Cumbria by the Chilli Pepper company (UK) Ltd in Stoney Bridge Kart-in-Cartmel. Rest assured it’s not at Indiagate!

Sowing the seed with Carleton Farm
To say down on the farm, is probably an understatement! Out in the farm visiting sites all around Penrith is where I have been with Carleton Hall farmer Neil Hodgson. Last month we started with the planting of the potatoes, after the de-stoning and soil preparation. This month, it was more planting and the term ‘sowing of the seed’ was brought home, when I learnt what a stitch is. The potatoes, well on the way and now sprouting, the barley like a green sea in the breeze, it was mid to late May, I was up behind the Beacon where I was out with Neil planting up the turnips, swedes, courgettes, broccoli and the famous Carleton carrots. Enough photos to fill two or three albums, I am more
intrigued by the machinery and the process much of the time. A real representation of old and new and one piece of equipment, which even Neil has no idea how old it is. We were using two types of equipment; the first was a seeder, with the seeds placed in a hopper. They are then distributed and covered by the soil as they land. In the mechanism is a spindle, which is sized to match the seed distances needed when planting. Then we have the manual planter, which might look like it could be used for marking out the lines on a football pitch. So with everything planted in the field, I asked the question, how many carrots have you planted? The answer was 32 stitches. Being the ‘townie’ that I am, the penny dropped; seeds – sow – stitches; a stitch being one line, from one end of the field to the other end of the field. What a good answer. But then a few days later, after we waited for a bit of rain, we went out planting leeks. I talked about the 30,000 leeks, all in plugs previously that where cultivated inside. The plugs were put outside at the side of the field ready for planting the week before. Have you ever seen leeks being planted? It’s a three man job with again, another bit of simple equipment. So we were over to Langwathby. We needed one driver and two planters for this job. The tractor is on a framework with two seats,

two planters and in front of them, a round plate with four holes in it, which goes around like a carousel. It looks like an egg poacher from the top and directly below the holes is a funnel, one for each. The mechanism turns the plate around and the plants are dropped in by hand one by one, which go down a shoot and then, like the other seeders, are covered in soil. To see it is to believe it! The planting was almost complete when I wrote this article in mid June. The weather at this end of the country is favourable to the south for the crops. Now the battle begins, not with the weather but the pests and vermin that have a taste for all that is tasty and green coming out of the ground!

When you cook it, it tastes like bacon, it cooks and smells like bacon, no water cooking in its own juices. The beef has been grass fed and hung on the bone for 21 days. It is so tender, you can cut it with a butter knife and then there is the lamb that has been fed on sweet parsnips. It not only tastes real, it tastes like it hasn’t been messed about with.

There’s learning to pass and there’s
learning to drive?
It has been a few years since I passed my driving test back in 1981. To get an update on learning to drive 30 years on from then, when I had that feeling of getting in a car and learning to drive, I popped around to Bert Brench’s house for a coffee. Bert is no stranger around Penrith and the surrounding areas. He has been a local driving instructor for over 12 years and of the 45,000 driving instructors in the UK, Bert is a grade 6 level instructor. This puts him in the top 7% of instructors in the UK. This experience, knowledge and level of instruction are all passed on to many, all in a day’s work, which ranges from early mornings, throughout the day, evenings and weekends. So is there a set way of instructing pupils? Well, as we discussed, everyone is different, everyone has their own idea of driving and everyone has their own pace, but there is just one set of rules whether the test is to be in Kendal or Carlisle. It all goes down to a small window of time that changes your life. Bert has to tailor different techniques to meet with the different standards, which eventually all link to the disciplines that are required.
to pass your test, then you learn how to drive’. The familiar and golden rule of ‘mirror, signal and manoeuvre’ had to be there, but I also clocked ‘creep and peep’, which is the obvious manoeuvre, as you prepare to pull away from a junction, but that was a new one to me. Is it ever too late to learn, I asked Bert? Well, there are many young pupils, but there are also a regular number of mature pupils that Bert instructs who, for various reasons and circumstances, start much later. Around Cumbria, travelling for many is essential and passing a driving test for some is independence and a new lease of life. When I was told I had passed, it was a mixed emotion celebration after 22 minutes of draining concentration, so it was a sense of relief that I wouldn’t have to do it again.
Something I don’t remember was the green ‘P’ plate, which is now used by people who have just passed their test, making other road users aware that they are still establishing their confidence. After all, being in a car on your own for the first time, whilst it is a release or freedom and the open road beckons, the fact that you don’t have someone giving There are some phrases out there instructions, is a massive change now, which were there 30 years and there are many other things ago. One which Bert reminded you’ll do, which you didn’t whilst me of was ‘first you learn how learning; listening to the radio,
listening to your own selection of music and other things. To think only a week ago you were getting ready for your test, now suddenly you’re surrounded by distractions and there is only one pair of ears and eyes in the car. Of course another dilemma is that you’ve passed your test and you’re now in a car with 3 or 4 other people, talking, listening to music, asking you questions, so who is checking your speed? The percentage of people going back to an instructor to get tips on driving, learn more about parking, driving on motorways and driving in different conditions, is very low. Overtaking and driving at speed is not usually done with ‘L’ plates and doesn’t normally, I would have thought, come into the test route in Kendal or Carlisle. The importance of driving with Bert is equally as important as passing the test. More parents are buying vouchers for those first few lessons, but once the test is passed, not many vouchers are purchased for the learning experience without ‘L’ plates, which is equally as crucial. Bert tells me that speed awareness, judging distances and clearance to other road users, are now some of the most critical parts of the test. Many thanks to Bert for sharing what I hope is an update and food for thought to our readers.

Stay local, try CA Business
Business
We have made a start and over the next few weeks, we will be adding more businesses to CA Business. I think local people in business are just grasping the idea of how far £100 goes when you sign up for CA Business. Recently, a business colleague spoke to me about a meeting regarding another internet business directory. It sounded pretty good, so we did a quick test. He was on his computer and I was on mine. We searched for ‘plumber Penrith Cumbria’. We ended up in Leeds and next on the list was Blackburn! Let’s try double glazing I said. Well, we waited and we waited and we waited some more. Then finally the screen came alive with Doncaster. The one below it was a coach company!!! You be the judge I said. Local business for me should be around the corner, not around the world. It should at least be in the same county. CA Business is local and if a business is not represented, then maybe it’s worth a search on the www.willfindabusinessinanothertownbecausewecouldn’tgetanyonetosignupinyours.com. studies, facts and customer satisfaction are good evidence of good products and good service. We see snippets on websites, in catalogues and advertising, but for me it has to be, no offence, from the ‘horses mouth’. If I was to be considering an investment, which equates to the same value as an average family car up to the value of a Lamborghini Gallardo, I would need convincing.
I have had a number of discussions recently with Ewen Estill, the Managing Director of Love Solar. He knows his stuff and sometimes he looses me in KWp, KWh, Bi Sols & Trisols, but even now I am starting to think I’ve got my head around it! This month starts a run of seasonal articles in which I am going to answer, what I would hope are some questions regularly asked about solar power. For example, is it just hot water? Can your home or business just run on solar? What is a PV panel? What does it cost? But more importantly, how does it actually work? Do I need planning permission? Can I choose a colour? Of course, Ewen knows all the answers and I’ve been out with him visiting clients of past, present and future generations, on roofs, wading through slurry, mud and the like. Meeting local people at their homes and in their businesses, I’ve discovered a greater and more practical understanding coming through from the people who have asked all these questions. Case
So let’s make a start. On the back and side of the Love Solar vehicles, is a slogan “Make money whilst the sun shines”. What happens if it doesn’t? If it doesn’t, would I lose money? Well, I was out for an afternoon with Ewen to meet people and view previous installations. It was the middle of June, the sky was a deep grey with some white cloud. There was no sun, but a few showers. No Energy? Yes daylight, which is enough and my first visit in Appleby was to a recent PV system, which was set in the roof, like a Velux window that consisted of 18 panels, which generates up to 4 Kwp of energy. On that day it proved to be enough. How, where, why, what? I went up into the loft and there in the eves, was a meter not a lot bigger than a gas meter. Thank you to Mr X. On a grey day, it was producing 2 KWp. The television was on, there were a couple of plugged in storage heaters on timers, ready to trip in and top up, as many lights as you needed when the sky’s grey and it was explained to me, that the electricity being used while it was being produced was all for free and he would still get paid 43.3p for every unit generated. It was not explained to me by Ewen, but by the owner of the new system. Free electricity in the day, enough heat for the evening with the storage heaters and a full tank of hot water. Then the penultimate line ‘and I get a quarterly cheque, which on the year will be about £1300 - £1500 , which more than covers additional fuel and energy that the system cannot provide’. Then to round it off, our local man is an electrician. It was a good call taking me to visit an electrician with solar power, but as the afternoon developed, there were no more electricians. To recap, the system I saw was a 4Kw system which would produce in excess of 3400KWh ( units per year). All the information about this is available at www.lovesolar.co.uk but for those of you who don’t do computers, here is what is referred to as the Feed Tariff (FIT).

The Feed in Tariff (FIT) or Green Energy Cash Back Scheme, guarantees the owner of a solar PV system a fixed price for the total amount of electricity generated from your solar PV system. The rate set for solar PV systems of less than 4Kwp is 43.3p per unit for every unit generated. This rate is guaranteed by law to be paid by all electricity providers for the next 25 years, or for the life of the solar array. The FIT is index linked to inflation and is tax free and only has 5% VAT..

• “New-build” means where installed on a new building before first occupation • “Retrofit” means installed on a building which is already occupied • “Stand-alone” means not connected to the grid There will be a lot to take in, but the image below is one of the most recent installations, which will provide enough energy to milk the herd, provide power for the rest of the farm buildings and the house and still be generating enough units back to the grid to cover a few bills. Next month, I will be coming back to this project. If you have a business, which uses a lot of energy and if you have a good sized roof, don’t wait for me to tell you about the community centres, local garages or offices of the future over the next few months. Call Ewen and ask him.

GREAT START FOR PENRITH CC
At the time of writing this article the on field optimistic feeling, which I wrote about in the April issue of Eden Local, looks fully justified. The 1st and 2nd teams are both top of their respective divisions of the North Lancs and Cumbria League whilst the 3rd , 4th and 5th teams have all made promising starts to the season in the Eden Valley League. The 1st X1 have made an impressive, unbeaten start to the season and are top of their league by one point having had 2 wins,a winning draw and 2 matches abandoned due to rain.They have also progressed to the quarter finals of the Higson Cup where they have a home tie against Whitehaven on Sunday 19th June.The club professional, Upul Fernando,did not arrive in time for the first 2 matches due to visa complications but made an immediate impact scoring 49 against Millom on his seasonal debut.Captain Nicky Burns has led by example scoring 3 half centuries already this season.In addition fellow opener Ben Littleton has had a good start as has new boy Arwyn Jones whose 4 wicket haul against Cockermouth was instrumental in their defeat. Youngsters Greg Hall, who is 15 years of age and Matthew Clark who is just 14 have also made an immediate impact for the 1st team with Greg scoring 56 not out and Matthew taking 4 for 36 in the Higson Cup victory at Millom. The 2nd team have had an equally impressive start and are top of the league as well as having progressed to the next round of the John Scott Memorial Cup by virtue of an
excellent but narrow 5 run victory against Barrow 2nd X1 who play in the Northern League.In this cup game Martyn Challoner scored a superb, undefeated century in his final game before emigrating to Canada whilst Jonathon Osborne did the damage with the ball taking 3 for 37. In the league the 2nds have had 3 wins and a rained off match including the demolition of previous league leaders, Lindal Moor who were bowled out for just 35 following excellent bowling performances from Jonathon Osborne, Jordon Ruddick, Martin Crouch and Greg Hall.It then took Penrith just 5.5 overs to seal a very comfortable victory. In addition to his maiden first team half century Greg Hall also has an unbeaten 70 to his name in the 2nd X1 and looks a great prospect for the future. The 3rd team have had 2 good victories following an opening day defeat.Austrailian amateur Adam Armistead has impressed with both bat and ball, whilst Martin Burns has had a couple of quickfire innings at the top of the order.
The 4th (Academy) team have also won 2 out of 3 games.Liam Trevaskis, aged 12, has put in the outstanding batting performance of the season scoring 41 against Penrith Wanderers whilst the ever youthful Ken Reed has produced a 5 wicket haul against Nunwick 2nds. The 5th team have only played one game so far and unfortunately lost but there were again excellent batting performances from 3 more youngsters – Richard Sykes and James Boustead - whilst Ben Dixon impressed with the ball. There is no room for complacency from anybody but things are looking good at the present time.If you are at a loose end on a Saturday or some Sunday afternoons why not come down to the club in Wetheriggs Lane and watch some cricket, whilst enjoying quality refreshments from our clubhouse, some fresh air and sunshine!! Crinkle Crags and Bowfell By Nick Wells
to Red Tarn where we turned right towards Great Knott.
Having found a window in the bad weather, we parked up at the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, walked out to the valley road and turned right to the footpath which took us to Stool End Farm. Here we took the path that leads into Oxendale, crossed the bridge spanning the river and started our ascent of the lower slopes of Pike o’Blisco, along the side of Browney Gill which took us
Looking back was an impressive view of the Langdale Pikes that Amy and I walked a few weeks ago. The main path led us to the first crinkle, reached by a short scramble and on to Long top the highest crinkle. Here we were faced with a feature known as Bad Step (a steep climb not for dogs) which we went around to avoid any difficulties. After lunch we continued along the five or was it six crinkles, and reached the three tarns offering a magnificent view of the Scafells. Here one can either take the path back down to Stool End Farm, or carry on as we did up Bowfell. Near the summit we came to Great Slab, a fascinating slab of rock which should not be missed. The top of
Bowfell was strewn with rock-masses only equalled with its neighbour Scafell Pike. The view is magnificent, you can see in every direction from the Scafells to the Langdale Pikes with Pike Of Stickle and its immense scree run, and all the way over to Skiddaw beyond Keswick. We could also just see Great Gable behind Scafell Pike. We descended Bowfell by the way we came, and at the three tarns took the path down the long ridge known as The Band which returned us to Stool End Farm, and back to the car at Dungeon Ghyll. This walk was eight and a half miles long in all, took us six hours, and is graded moderate to hard. If anyone would like to suggest a walk, please email me at

Working dogs in the community Part 2 We have come to an end of our first season with Frame, Swift and Partners. Over the recent months we have covered some important links with this local business and how it delivers a truly unbelievable service in the community, which is professional and charitable. I have briefly covered the work carried out by Jess Gillon, Partner, who heads up the small animals section of the practice. This is just one of the three sections, the other two being Farm Animals and Equine.
promotion in the ‘Chipping month’ this month we wanted to remind people about the importance of disease prevention by regular vaccination. Many pet owners do not realise that infectious disease is still a serious threat to their animals. In this area we still see not infrequent cases of canine parvovirus, cat flu and myxomatosis in rabbits. These diseases are entirely preventable by vaccination and unfortunately animals that do become infected will very often die.’
I have enjoyed the opportunity behind the scenes to witness some amazing and challenging operations, with some pioneering procedures. Back in April, I visited the Eden Animal Rescue Centre, which works closely with the practice. This professional, working relationship was established many years ago and as one of the Frame, Swift and Partners chosen charities, there is quite a contribution made ‘out of hours’ by the practice and its staff in raising funds and forging links with the community, to raise the profile of Eden Animal Rescue and drum up support.
It’s a simple process, just as the psychologist Pavlov found with his experiment into the conditioning of dogs. Pavlov found that when the dogs saw their dinner, they would salivate. Pavlov introduced the ringing of a bell More recently, I wrote about the at meal times. Eventually ringing of a Cumbria Police Dog Section and the bell meant food and these dogs, over working between the practice and a period of time, would salivate just on the dog handling team at Carleton. hearing the bell and no food would be When you then link these professional present, but the anticipation of food bodies to Eden Animal Rescue, you would be. For our training of DCFD get a fantastic story, which shows dogs (sniffer dogs to you and me) they how organisations working together start looking for the scent that is no can produce priceless results. Back longer a rubber ball but a concealed in May, I got to meet a number of canister. It’s the scent of the canister, dogs, who I joined during the start of which has contained various drugs.

their 6 week Tri-purpose dog – Drug/ Cash and Firearms Detection Dog training (DCFD Dogs). Dogs come into the training at different ages and from a variety of backgrounds. These dogs, as early as possible, learn to play like any dog. With a rubber ball, an over enthusiastic and excited dog fetches the ball and brings it back. The rubber ball eventually becomes a small canister or tube which has to be found. When it is found, the ball appears and the reward of play begins.

training is quite challenging for the dogs; just as challenging for the dog handlers, I thought. Over the few weeks that I was collating the article and visiting the dogs on site, it was quite amazing. It was also very encouraging seeing the cooperation of local businesses engaged with the dog training.
Like the bell ringing, this takes over the hunt for reward. Whilst the dog cannot get to the contents, the various smells of the different drugs become associated with play time. As soon as the dog finds the location, it locks on. I would say there that the tail is wagging, but then it never stops, because to them it’s a game! The ball appears, they don’t know where from, it lands in front of them and they then get to play with it.
The training requires a lot of simulated exercises with real drugs, under strictly regulated controls and guidelines. Importantly for the dogs, searching were there is a lot of scent is challenging but key to the training. From schools to nightclubs, old buildings, factories, offices, railway stations, cars and the fields around us, the dogs are tested in many different environments. But is it a test of the dogs or the trainers? It will be both as they are a team. The dog and the trainer work together and most days, the dog is taken home. In the event that they are called out, time is crucial so the bond is very much 24/7.

training and then came a flash of golden labrador. But this was no ordinary dog. Olly, for me is the success of linked up thinking and organisations working together. A rescue dog that got caught in that loop and now has a new life, trained as a DCFD dog. In the hours I spent with Mark and the team, I could write a book, but for me there will be the final round up in next month’s Eden Local. For Frame, Swift and Partners, I would like to thank all the team for the opportunity and experience they have shared with me and their assistance in bringing these stories to the community.

Next month, maybe we can start the introductions, the who’s who and who is doing what on the list of jobs and what is still needed. We do need help with the studio construction and wiring, including IT. The 25th November 2011 is the date we have applied for to commence a 28 day broadcast. Advertising costs start from £10, so if you are one of the 2000 businesses, which are in the population and would like to advertise or book an hour on the radio to talk about your business, please drop us a line at info@edenfm.com Of course the real advertising will cost a bit more, as much as £150 to have a 30 second advert played 5 times a day for 28 days. To advertise and been seen supporting you local radio we need businesses to consider sponsorship of the outside broadcasting vehicle. “The Good Life” is jus
June saw a real mixed bag of weather ranging from baking hot sunny days to heavy rain and strong winds – a typical Cumbrian summer! My partner Mike and I have had a frantic few weeks and haven’t managed to spend as much time as we would have liked on the garden, so much so I had to fight my way through a mass of nettles to get to the hose pipe. It’s amazing how quickly the weeds grow if you don’t keep on top of them isn’t it! Due to our climate here in beautiful Cumbria, many plants and crops take a little longer to come to fruition, strawberries being one. You should have been enjoying strawberries for a few weeks now. Remember, the more you pick, the more will grow, so harvest your strawberries on a daily basis. If you end up with too many, why not preserve them so you can enjoy the taste of summer later on in the year? Making jam is one of the most popular ways of preserving jam, nothing compares to the taste of homegrown strawberry jam!

st around the corner If you have grown rocket, lettuce or other leaves you need to make sure you keep regularly picking to sustain the continued production of new growth. Don’t be tempted to leave to their maximum size as this is actually counterproductive as it slows down the growth, plus the young plants tend to taste better. If you have a greenhouse or polytunnel it may well be a good idea on warm days to leave the doors open to aid cooling and ventilation, however you may want to consider covering the opening with netting to stop birds and animals entering, as these panic once inside and can cause damage not only to themselves but to the growing crops as well.

September 15th, 16th, 17th & 18th 2011 The World Sheep Dog Trials, Food and Country Festival is taking place at the historic and picturesque Lowther Estate which is at the heart of the Lake District, by kind permission of the Right Honourable Jim Lowther. This event has created a lot of momentum and excitement, which will be of huge financial benefit for the area and will put this region firmly on the map. We have already managed to fill a lot
of local bed and breakfast and hotel establishments and I am fully aware that the local shops, restaurants and pubs will also be buzzing. As you will have read in my previous articles, the event is run and managed by a very committed group of individuals, who make up the local organising committee. The World Sheep Dog Trials, Food and Country Festival has to find a considerable amount of
finance to stage this event. This festival has already generated a lot of sponsorship from local and national companies and is still working hard to find more. We have a lot of sponsors from the agricultural and allied industries, who all value the benefit of their association with this event. We have an exciting television partnership with North One television. This will allow us to promote and market the event to a wide audience, so that the huge support from sponsors is acknowledged and the prestige of the trialling world is shown. We are also delighted to announce that Matt Baker will be joining us on Friday 16th September to learn how to handle a sheepdog from the experts!

The initial driver for staging this event is the World Sheep Dog Trials, which assembles 24 countries together to compete on the trials field. The ‘best of the best’ will attend this event and will promise a thrilling spectacle on a breath taking trials field. There will also be a whole host of festival and arena activities, which will keep avid trials enthusiasts and members of the public excited all day. ONCE BITTEN, TWICE SHY Cumbria Employment Solicitors
Disputes between employers and employees are often resolved by way of negotiation. This usually results in the employer paying the employee something and the employee accepting the payment in “full and final settlement”.
Michael Bauer
You might think that this would be enough to achieve a “clean break” and protect the employer from future claims. In fact, unless certain conditions are satisfied the agreement will not be sufficient to prevent the employee from taking the money and still commencing Employment Tribunal proceedings against the employer.
When might this arise?
As long as a compromise agreement is properly drafted then it will prevent the employee from pursuing future employment claims against the employer. The main requirements of such an agreement are that:
There are numerous situations in which this can be relevant including where: The employer is seeking to agree a voluntary redundancy package;
It must be in writing;
There is a disciplinary or performance issue and the possibility of dismissal;
It must relate to a “particular complaint” or “particular proceedings”;
There is a desire to dismiss due to long-term absence;
The employee must have received independent legal advice on the agreement’s terms and effect;
An Employment Tribunal claim has been threatened or started.
How to safeguard your business? A compromise agreement is an effective way to settle most claims arising from an individual’s employment or the termination of that employment. It can also provide for confidentiality so the terms of the agreement cannot be disclosed and prohibit the parties from making future disparaging comments about each other.
It must state that the conditions regulating compromise agreements have been satisfied. If you are an employer or an employee and would like advice on a compromise agreement or any other employment issue then please get in touch with us. We offer competitively priced specialist employment advice to employers and employees. We are happy to give free initial advice in the form of a preliminary assessment of the issue.

And Finally...... Before we close the chapter on this month’s Eden Local, I have just two event reminders to add to those already posted. We have the Penrith Show on Saturday 23rd July. All the details are available at www.penrithshow.co.uk. The Penrith Art Club’s annual exhibition opens from 10am to 5pm daily from Saturday 8th August to Sunday 16th August at the St Andrew’s Centre, next to St Andrew’s Church in the centre of Penrith. Admission is free. If your business missed the opportunity of getting a place in the first issue of the Eden Local ‘Eating Out in Eden’ Summer supplement, which was distributed from over 150 outlets, we are printing the second edition mid July. Please call now for details or get the details from the Eden Local website. Supplement prices and main publication prices do differ due to postal costs. To advertise in Eden Local, the rates start from £25 per month. All the prices, deadlines for booking advertising and distribution dates are available at www. edenlocal.co.uk. If you would like to promote your business through 14,240 doors, for a lot less than the price of designing, printing and delivering a leaflet, call us now on 01768 862394 or 07881 530085. If you would like to drop me a line about the Eden Local, you can write to me via email at lee@edenlocal.co.uk or send post to Lee Quinn, Eden Local Ltd, 33 Sandgate, Penrith, CA11 7TJ.
