Dear Residents and Businesses
EdenLocal •
Well, I sit down as I do every month and I write an opening editorial and up to four days later, we jump four more pages, have new businesses signing up and then I get called to go to various meetings that have the now and wow factor, I get some fantastic stories that would otherwise not be seen or heard and I receive a barrage of phone calls! This month has been no exception with about 3,000 photos and I’ve made about 150 visits to collate this month’s magazine, as I believe it is important that with any marketing, in order to get it right, you have to experience the place that you’ve been writing about or been asked to promote. One piece could be three or more visits. Some articles, to get them right, require a series of meetings over a period of months. Just because it’s a free magazine delivered to your door and it’s free to read on the internet, doesn’t mean a compromise in what we aim to deliver. Need I say more. It’s the 10th edition of your Eden Local and whilst we are only in August, the planning and sequencing of stories is already up to December 2012. We even have bookings, just like some of our customers working with the publication, well into 2013.

The website data is now showing close to 250 locations viewing our website outside of the Eden Valley and nearly 30 countries around the world have been having a look around the Eden Local website. In June, just under 1600 people read Eden Local on line. What is our readership with over 15,000 magazines distributed? I don’t actually know. It was never our intention that the Eden Local magazine would become a mini tourist or visitor attraction, but if it brings more visitors in for local businesses, it can’t be bad. I think in the current climate, being a free read does help. With new articles and new businesses coming on board every month, the costs are shared more and more, the magazine can then only grow in size and develop, which means that as a positive read it has a positive outcome. An up and coming event reminder is that the Penrith Art Club’s annual exhibition opens from 10am to 5pm daily from Saturday 8th August to Sunday 16th August at the St Andrew’s Centre. Admission is free.

Down to business, the growing team now behind the scenes
Eden
Ian Holt was born in Birmingham and raised in Leicester. Since the age of 18, he has lived
and worked in many parts of the UK, Republic of Ireland and more recently in Andalucia in Spain. After many years of self taught techniques and skills, as a very mature student he studied at DeMontfort University and in between his daily lectures in engineering and woe of woes quantitative maths, he produced jingles, sweepers and voiceovers for the uni radio station Demon FM. Ian then relocated to Bethnal Green to take up his advanced learning as part of a BA Honours Degree in recording arts in London. Developing his skills in studio and live work led to the eventual hosting of a weekly band night spread across several prestigious London venues. Ian’s experience has also included voiceovers for Sky, BBC and many of the freeview channels when in London. Ian’s vision for his part in Eden FM takes in the interests of Cumbria’s ever present army of fell walkers and visitors to the area. A keen fell walker himself, Ian is keen to develop localised areas of interest and would welcome any ideas as to input. Some initial headings might be, a dedicated section of website to tourism and fell walkers, routes of walks including maps and waypoints, a section for gear and where to purchase locally and live broadcasted walks on Sunday morning. As part of Eden FM’s approach to the Local Arts, it is their intention to host one of the most comprehensive Band, Choir, Duo and Solo nights on the Cumbrian airwaves. Ian will be overseeing this development and welcomes any suggestions or input from contributors or interested parties. Building on his skills and experience as part of the senior team, he will be the main link behind the outside broadcasting as well as presenting his own shows.
Richard Bracken is sixteen and a student about to go into sixth form at QEGS in Penrith.
His interests are pretty much football, acting and of course, music. Since the age of ten, he has been a member of the Penrith Players and last summer he became a member of the National Youth Theatre, which is a great accolade. In his own words ’I have also been involved in many QEGS productions. I’m also in a band in which I sing and play the guitar. I would love to have a career in acting or music but being a radio presenter would just combine two of my favourite things, so I’m hoping this could possibly be one step into a future career’.
Lora Elliot has recently joined the team and has lived in Penrith all of her life. Just
returned from university after completing a media production degree, in her own words ‘I am looking forward to getting involved in the radio station, working on the live music show and getting more actively involved in the community’. Like all those involved in the project, Lora will be multi-tasking. As an idea, here are some of the areas as a member of the committee. Lora will be helping with general administration, programming, presenting and outside reporting and interviews for live music events. Many of the activities building on the experiences that relate to her involvement in radio at university.
Stef Yourell Born in Hackney in London and now in Temple Sowerby, a Graphic Designer by
trade, Stef’s been presenting radio shows around England on and off for the past seven years with a lot of experience in community radio. In his words ’I am excited about joining the Eden FM team’. Stef is a walking encyclopaedia of 60’s, 70’s and 80’s pop culture trivia, a proud dad and 4 time winner of The Stef award for his own achievements. In short, he’ll be working with drills and hammers rather than decks and desks as he is a bit of a handyman when it comes to building studios.
Sian Whittaker is still in shock after accepting the challenge to host the flagship show of
any radio station, the breakfast show. Sian is now going to be recruiting her breakfast crew possie. A local girl, Sian studied at UCC, stayed on into sixth form and studied leisure and tourism. You will see her in town helping out at the Ice Cream Garden in Penrith, which was her first job from the age of 14 and also worth a mention, is that Sian did complete her work experience at CFM, which gave her a brief insight to the processes and workings behind a radio. Her experience in music covers a career spanning 10 years as a local night club DJ working in Penrith and Keswick. In her own words, ‘I’m really looking forward to being involved with Eden FM. A community radio station is just what the town and the rural areas around it needs right now. I have always wanted to stay locally, as I feel very passionate about ‘home’, so Eden FM is the perfect opportunity for me. I am very much looking forward to hearing from you all and starting this new chapter!’

Growing support from community moves radio closer to launch
Eden
Strengthening the campaign and being the first organisation to recognise the Eden FM radio campaign as a genuine community project and recognising it as a not for profit business, is the Pride in Penrith lottery. With support in funding, the radio can now strengthen the community, support the community, promote the community in Eden and outside of Eden.
Andy Jackson - Chairman, Pride of Penrith Lottery, presents cheque to Lee Quinn – Chairman, Eden FM Community Radio, for £2500
Behind any successful campaign for a full time community radio, is a group of dedicated personnel. Behind them, assisting with favours, finance and support in the best way that fits with them and their business, are the community businesses. It’s a commitment shared and the ultimate goal of a community station being the reward. At the time of this article, much is going on behind the scenes and in the middle of this, Steve Graham, the dealership manager from the Cumbria Mini Centre, after a successful bid on a well know site, secured a novelty. The item we have called ‘Boris’, pictured here on the right, is a 1960’s dodgem – bumper car. Courtesy of Ullswater Road Garage, we were given the use of a Westmorland self-drive hired van to drive to Hexham to collect Boris. Temptation took over, however, and we found another dodgem ‘Bella’. In addition to support, there has to be uniqueness at a radio and Boris and Bella will feature in a number of ways. Interviews, which involve dodging the answer to the question, will take place seated in Boris or Bella. With the support of Steve Parker and Tony Sproat’s business, Morrisons Motor Body Repairs in Penrith, the dodgems will be restored to their former glory. Thanks to Steve, Tony and the team for getting behind the Eden FM project. With the sponsorship of the outside broadcast covered by local businesses, the website cost covered, material costs for building the studio covered and the donation of two new computers from the guys at SPB Computers in Penrith, it doesn’t stop there.
It’s a donation, which is the largest cheque to have been given to a community project to date. The funding is key to the cost of the first licence application to get Eden FM on the air on 25th November 2011. As Chairman of the Eden FM Radio campaign and director of Eden FM Ltd, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Pride in Penrith Lottery for the donation, from all the team at Eden FM and for all those who support the Pride of Penrith Lottery. As well as our thanks to you, as a local radio station we will be looking forward to presenting a regular Pride of Penrith Lottery feature and we hope to have a live draw in a regular slot every week.

Hats off to Dottie Days Our first trip to Dottie Days was back in December and Derrick and Melanie’s clothes agency had been open just one month then. It is a business that has really bucked the recession blues and is now really getting established in Little Dockray, Penrith. For the chaps reading this one, please bear with me as it’s an education and it could save you an absolute fortune! As well as ladies wear, the accessories side of Dottie Days has really taken off. I spoke to Melanie, who explained that she was sceptical about taking in shoes, but they have proved to be really popular. ‘To be fair we only take in shoes that are either brand new or have minimal wear, these being typically worn one day for one event like a wedding or special occasion’, Melanie explained. It doesn’t stop there as handbags are also popular, but a big hit has been on occasion hats. Dottie Days hats are typically priced around £20 and some even come with their own hat box. They generally have about 20 hats in stock and Melanie made the point that there has been a common theme coming through on the hats, which is that alarm bells ring at how much it is to buy a brand new hat these days. If someone is going to a wedding for example, they will typically buy an outfit, (chaps this could be a dress), which would then include a hat, shoes and a bag. Most can normally be worn again, whereas the hat is not called for, leaving the hat to gather dust on top of the wardrobe. Some ladies have mentioned spending as much as £200 on a hat. So Melanie is firmly on the wavelength that hats are certainly back in vogue. Maybe we have the Royal Wedding to thank for that. So, building on this, Dottie Days not only has its range of hats, but it has also now sourced a supplier, which means Melanie can order hats at any point for a customer who is looking for a hat at a reasonable price, if the hat is not available, not a suitable colour or size or if the customer prefers to buy a new one.
coloured adjustable headband to ensure a good fit There are 25 fascinators to choose from plus 10 handbags/clutch bags to choose from if customers wish to match their hat to their bag * Some styles are not available in every colour They do have a swatch card in the shop so customers can actually see the colour they are ordering. Obviously they cannot hold every style in the shop but will be ordering in some sample hats and fascinators so people can get a better idea of the overall shape and size before ordering. If the hat, fascinator or bag is in stock when the order is placed, it will normally be dispatched within 24 hours (subject to weekends and bank holidays). Any items not in stock, should be dispatched within a 3 week period, but more will be known when the order is placed. And some prices too. Hats - £65 - £80 depending on style Fascinators - £30 - £60 depending on style Bags - £26 - £39 depending on style
The customer can go into Dottie Day’s, simply choose the style, choose the colour and that’s all there is to it. They will of course still continue to take in hats as part of the Dress Agency to keep an off the shelf range.
The price includes VAT, p&p from the supplier and a hat box.
Here are some Dottie Days facts and figures about their hats.
A deposit is required when placing the order. The balance is required upon collection.

In keeping with tradition
This is a true confession that my experience of butchery was as a trainee butcher in Sainsbury’s in 1979. I moved out of the meat department by 1980 and it wasn’t until 1989, that I started to help a friend out in between shifts who owned two butchers. That’s when I learnt what being a butcher was all about. Whole sides of beef being delivered, animals actually coming in whole, rather than in a box, a plastic tray or a in a vacuum packet. Christmas was the best time, plucking braces of pheasants and labelling up turkeys with raffle tickets ready for Christmas Eve. Starting at 4am, the customers would be queuing outside from 6am with their matching tickets. I would be finished by 1pm. We had our regulars just like Santa we used to say. Having the opportunity to write about local produce is something I enjoy. Having the opportunity to write and work with a family butchers based in Penrith, which has been established since 1873 is like Christmas come early. In that year, the peak of English football, England played Scotland on 8th March 1873 at the Oval and they won 4 – 2. Queen Victoria was on the throne. It was 13 years before the motor car was invented and over in the USA, one Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer and his 7th Cavalry, had just survived a brief skirmish with the Sioux Indians lead by Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull. They were not so lucky two years later. What a difference an ocean makes. Closer to home Joseph Jackson plied his trade as a butcher around the Appleby area on a horse and cart. His son, Frank Jackson in the 1930’s, became a farmer-butcher
EdenLocal
and served his apprenticeship at Walter Parkers Butchers in Penrith. He used to take the meat up to the Dunbull Inn at Haweswater on a pack horse, before the dam was built. After the war he moved to Askham and set up his own slaughtering business and started dealing in cattle. In 1979, his son Trevor Jackson took over the abattoir until it eventually closed in 1994. So there I was sitting down with Frank Jackson the 3rd and he explained to me 138 years on, following the acquisition of Clarks Butchers at Great Dockray in Penrith, how Frank and his family are now going back to their family roots. As a business, they have some clear goals; to remain traditional, to buy local in sourcing as much of their meat as they can from the Eden Valley. You can’t turn the clock back to 1873 but in going back to traditional ways, banking the history from maintaining the Clarks’ recipes, using theirs and the Jackson’s own traditional recipes in their sausages and pies that go back to 1873, they will be developing a taste for the future. Jackson’s family butchers will continue to source as much of their meat from local breeders. They are starting to rear their own stock in natural ways with the intention

mobile: 07881 530085
and hope that one day all of their meat can be sourced from the Eden Valley. All of this can only be achieved with your help. Your local butcher isn’t just for Christmas. Your local butcher is there to serve you and the community 12 months of the year. You just need to be there for them 12 months of the year and help maintain and protect tradition. Creating the traditional tastes from the past, that will be our taste of tradition in the future.

The Real Deal with the Rod & Reel
EdenLocal • 13
This month’s trip to Cocklakes was certainly different from the previous visits. The challenge or should I say task, was to bring to the Eden Local readers, my experience of the Trout Fishery. The lake was recently featured on the front cover of the June issue of Eden Local and whilst you can write a story by watching, for me it was a first hand experience of being introduced to fly fishing by Eric Hope one of the resident qualified fishing instructors. I have to confess that I do have some experience as a coarse fisherman and for many years, I suppose you could say, I have been lost at sea in fishing after living on or near to the coast for many years. But from beach casting a 20 foot rod with a 5 ounce lead on to a light weight 6 foot whip was quite a challenge. As the morning went on, I described it to Eric as using a tennis racket and the change needed to use a badminton racket. Controlled power, less arm and more wrist movement; and as for the handle, like going from cricket bat to a table tennis bat. In short, I first learned how to cast in an open area by the side of the lake on a section of grass. I learned how to hold the rod and use the wrist not the whole of the arm. I learned the basics of ‘roll cast’, the positioning of the rod, how to control the rod and line, when to release and at what point, in order to let the line flow out, ‘shooting line’. A familiar phrase and instruction when bringing the rod over my head, was 10 o’clock and 12 o’clock. Practice can make perfect and I think Eric was being nice to me, when within the hour, I was actually wading out a short way from the bank and actually fly fishing. Did I catch anything? Well I did, but it was the one that otherwise got away! The experience was one I hope to enjoy again, for that small gap in my diary, the odd evening straight after work, a few hours out with my daughter who will also be exploring the switch from the beach caster or boat road to the lightweight whip. It will be something to savour in the near and distant future. Skill, fun, relaxation and being outside in a lovely setting. Of course it might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but then there is the Rod and Reel Tearoom 10 metres from the bank. My thanks to Simon at Cocklakes and to Eric who I will be seeing again soon. An experience shared and I would hope for many of you, a moment to enjoy. Eric did put his line in maybe three or four times. The image below is one of a few........in a short space of time. To try the Cocklakes experience, either as an individual, a family, a group of friends or to enquire about business/corporate events, please call 01768 487060. The evolution of contemporary Indian cuisine India has always produced one of the world’s finest cuisines, even as far back as the Moghul Times. Its techniques have evolved from the fiery wood and charcoal burning stoves to efficient modern equipment. Their essential philosophy, however, has remained the same; to use fresh produce, preparation, organisation and patience. Its different variations in the climate and terrain produce an enormous range of herbs and spices and exciting collection of recipes with traditional dishes from the east. To achieve this harmonious blend of fragrant flavours, we have used some ancient, time honoured recipes to the success of each individual dish. Here we have created a selection of dishes from across the Indian states for your enjoyment. Either having a takeaway or dining in our restaurant has always been the easiest decision to make with Indiagate. Making a selection from our menu, takes a bit more thought. Will it be something traditional, something different, a chef’s special or one of the signature dish house specials. You now have another decision to consider. The Indiagate team now cater outside of the restaurant. Special occasions, large parties, wedding receptions and birthdays, can all be catered for meaning you can have you very own Indian banquet. Having a barbeque? Would you like a barbeque with that taste of Indiagate? Now available for that Indian barbeque with a difference, a selection of special Indiagate marinated meats that you can order, collect and then cook at home. To order your Indian barbeque, we will require 24 hours notice. Indiagate, serving you options, serving you quality, serving your every need in Indian Cuisine. EdenLocal

How soon the season moves and the fields change colour. Back in December, I wrote my first article about Carleton Farm, the potato store at Langwathby and the sorting of the old potatoes. It was the early days of my introduction to local low mileage food, one careful owner. Well, here we are now with local food with a real local view. I took two trips out with Neil Hodgson at the end of June and mid July, from Carleton Farm up onto the Beacon above Penrith. This is where once again the first part of the 2011 harvest would begin. The weather had been favourable as we looked across the field of the ‘second earlys’, new potatoes to you and me, which were and are still ready, in fact available to September. For me again, a simple but very rewarding experience of seeing Neil and Chris at this early stage, digging enough potatoes by hand to fill a 20 kg bag of new Wilja potatoes, which within 10 minutes of coming out of the ground would be on the shelf in the farm shop and sold that same afternoon. Of course I had to have some! Great to watch and a taste that combines summer and freshness on the table for dinner that evening. It doesn’t get much fresher and local. There is, however, an up and a downside to this article. The upside being that due to demand, the harvester was out and in full swing a week later, so now you should be able to get local new potatoes from local shops, that are committed to sourcing local produce, which are available from Carleton Farm or its farm shop. The downside, however, is that like all the local produce, when its ready, its ready and new potatoes are a limited edition just for the summer. I’ll leave you with this thought. It’s a small trip to a farm shop that makes a big difference to our local economy and traditional values. phone: 01768 899111 / 01768 862394

Like many articles I write, they start with a meeting. Last month I was out and about with Ewen, the owner of Love Solar. Based on my visits to properties with Ewen, where Love Solar had completed installations, I got a ‘hands on’ induction behind the scenes, seeing completed installations, part completed installations and some sites planned for future installations. As I closed the last article, it was my intention to re-visit the sites that were currently being installed, but based on the avalanche of calls and hunger to know more about solar power, this month’s article is simply more information about this type of renewable energy. We’ve had our induction and we know about Feed in Tariffs, but here are some questions answered. Solar PV works by converting solar irradiation (daylight not just sunlight) into DC electricity, that is then turned into AC by the inverter, which is usually located in the attic space. I saw one of these on my travels with Ewen. It’s not a lot bigger than a gas meter. 1 Kwp measures EdenLocal
phone: 01768 899111 / 01768 862394
approximately 7.5 m2 and this is 4 PV panels. 4 Kwp measures approximately 30m2, which is 16 PV panels. These are generally installed on any south facing roof or a piece of land and are angled at 35 degrees to maximise the input. The electricity generated is then fed back from the inverter to a generation meter, then on to the consumer unit or sub board, where it is utilised by the household domestic supply or exported back on to the grid. The occupier of the property gets paid their Feed in Tariff on what is produced and it is index linked and tax free for the next 25 years guaranteed. We have the diagram, which also helps to explain how it works and how from daylight it becomes electricity. You’ll note from the diagram that there aren’t a lot of components. Most installations can be completed within 3 working days by a trained and experienced team. Love solar Ltd have completed over 60 installations in Cumbria and Eden Valley. Many new

companies are moving into the area, but how many actually have much experience and how many are local? With solar you are making an investment and, with Love Solar, your investment comes with Modules that are guaranteed for the 10 years workmanship. The Modules are also guaranteed to produce 80% of total output in 25 years. The solar PV ‘maintenance free’ inverters will last in excess of 10 years. Love Solar uses a very high output module, the state of the art technology ‘Bisol’, which are rated in the top 3 of all Modules on the market. Well, we’re no longer solar novices, so let’s look at some light technical spec . There are different types of systems. There are roof mounted systems, roof integrated systems, flat roof systems, ground mounted systems and there are PV tracker systems. It is starting to sound a bit like James Bond, but there are systems that like sunflowers will
follow the sunlight. Of course you don’t need the island with the white sand and turquoise blue ocean to have a system like ‘the man with the Golden Gun’, on top of a roof or slurry tank, there we’re back done to earth.
but I’ll leave you with this and that is that, the rain in Spain, may stay mainly in the plain, but the national average output per KWp installed is 850KWh per KWp installed and Penrith and the Eden Valley beats this national average.
The thing is that it’s not 1970’s fiction anymore. The reality is that there are a number of different applications; domestic, commercial, community, agricultural and they all get the same FIT (Feed in Tariff),
Coming up, we will be looking at your local garage, which if you haven’t noticed is facing south, with the reality that will be the home of your local solar powered community radio station of the future.

That moment shared now …… There are many stories and articles that I have covered in what is a very short time since I started on my first Eden Local editorial back in November 2010. Some of them have been more challenging than others, not achieved by a flying visit and a quickly staged photograph. Sometimes it requires many visits, so that the outcome when I do write, reflects that I have genuinely been behind the scenes and got to know the people behind that business, wherever that may be. How many times have you walked or driven past the beautiful Georgian mansion on Bridge Lane (the A6 road) on the southern approach into Penrith? Built in 1804 as the home of the Rimington family, the mansion was commandeered during the world wars by the army as a dental hospital. Latterly, it was owned by the ‘Mac’ Davidson family. It is now the home of Walker’s Funeral Directors and the Messenger family who moved in on 4 March 1986.
I first met Peter and Eileen Messenger on 20 January 2010 at a social event. Unlike many people reading this article, I didn’t know who they were until they were introduced to me by their eldest daughter Kathryn. It was some months later that Kathryn told me about her parents’ business. This old and much respected business was established here in Penrith in 1945 by Eileen’s father, Reg Walker and is, I am told, the only family run Funeral Directors in Penrith, in that it is owned and run by the family. It may be your first encounter with bereavement and your mind will be awash with seemingly unsolvable and complex problems, however, at Tynefield, you will find a quiet and relaxed atmosphere. The Messenger family, to use a modern day term, ‘work from home’. Peter, Eileen, their daughter Susan and son in law Alan, are assisted by John who has been
with them for many years. When you call at Tynefield House, you are a visitor, made welcome and reassured by the friendly Messenger family, who are there to help you and your family overcome many difficulties that you may face. They take great pride in their work and strive to get things ‘just right’ for you. Taking a look around Tynefield House, I felt the comfort offered by sitting in the drawing room and the peace and tranquillity of the chapel. The show rooms are there for you so that you can make your own personal choice of traditional, modern or eco-friendly caskets, amongst many other items. Behind the scenes, I could see just how much work is involved in furnishing and upholstering the caskets, completing the seemingly endless paperwork and preparing and cleaning the vehicles etc. It’s something that we sometimes witness but may not always be

aware of and that is the great care that is taken with the deceased, their dignity and privacy is of the utmost importance.
or there is a knock on the door, everything changes. Those seeking assistance have greater needs and every effort is made to help.
When that moment arrives, sometimes out of the blue, how prepared are we? There is a list of things that have to be done and Walker’s can help, assist and guide you in all these matters, most of which they can do on your behalf, their service covers everything from booking the cremation or the cemetery, the church, the minister, the organist, the transport, the bearers, newspaper notices, flowers and anything else that may be required according to your wishes. All importantly, Walker’s are there to try and ease the burden on the family, who after all have enough to worry about at this traumatic time.
I realise from my visit that it is quite a complex business getting everything organised. Logistically, everyone needs to arrive at the same place, on the same date and at the same time and Walker’s have a reputation and history of assurance that this will always be the case. There is so much that we can do now, so many wishes we all have that need to be fulfilled. It is important not to wait for that sad day coming, but to think ahead

while you can think clearly and talk to your family or someone who understands. Share a moment and a thought and then get on with your life, which is precious beyond words. Eden Local is about people, it’s about families and it’s about businesses in the community. I will be talking further with Peter and Eileen, spending time with them and Alan and Sue, who will at some point take over the running of the important business because that’s how it is at Walker’s and that’s how they hope it will always be – one family looking after the needs of another.

Bringing new customers to Cumbria Using the internet to promote local businesses The vision for Eden Local is well established and this 10th edition, alongside its supplement magazine ‘Eating Out in Eden’, now on its 2nd publication, has set the pace for more exciting media opportunities to follow very soon. The Eden FM community radio station project is close to securing its temporary licence and the CA Business Directory is developing at a fast past. Strategic partnerships, collaborative relationships and professional alliances are developing with a broad range of local businesses that have now caught the Eden Local vision, which is being orchestrated by Lee Quinn from Perennial Process Ltd.
One such business is Eden Valley Websites, a local business operated by Nigel Holme, who specialises in providing low cost functional websites that can be paid for on a monthly basis. The service includes niche marketing on other websites such as www.cumbriasbestkeptsecrets.co.uk, and social networking for business development. Nigel also helps clients to develop new avenues of profitability. Nigel has been involved with internet business development for many years and has worked for major internet business investors. His background includes graphic design, advertising, marketing, national magazine creation and management. More recently Nigel has undertaken two years of website development training and is now a member of the International Webmasters Association. With the broader Eden Local vision now in focus, Eden Valley Websites have accepted the appointment to develop and manage the new Eden FM Community Radio Station website while also providing support to other Perennial Process Ltd. website projects.
Nigel invites Eden Local businesses and services to contact him with a view to website creation and business collaboration at. www.edenvalleywebsites.co.uk
Business In simple terms this is a locally based, locally accessed and a locally managed website. There are too many businesses out there that have details on various business directories showing the wrong details. Businesses often get calls asking for the company previously on that number or at that address, these are just some examples of the downside with directories not managed locally. For £100 each year, your business will be on a local directory; the directory will be promoted across Eden and the price includes spot advertising in Eden Local and on Eden FM. In early 2012, your directory entry goes into a printed Eden Local based business directory. The distribution will be door to door to 24,000 homes and business addresses in Penrith and the Eden Valley. As for your £100 investment, £25 will go straight to the Eden FM Community radio project. The remainder will be spent on delivering those terms outlined above. CA business - Putting your business first and contributing to the local economy.

Misconduct Dismissals Cumbria Employment Solicitors
When times are tough economically, misconduct issues that might have been treated more leniently in better times can become a major problem and sometimes lead to dismissal. I set out below the basic requirements for a fair dismissal on misconduct grounds. Michael Bauer
If an employer is going to dismiss fairly due to misconduct then he/she must: Carry out a proper and balanced investigation including interviewing any witnesses; Provide the evidence discovered in the investigation to the employee in good time for any disciplinary meeting; Invite the employee to a meeting (at which the employee has the right to be accompanied by a trade union representative or a colleague) and allow the employee to respond to the allegations; Follow up any lines of enquiry identified by the employee at the meeting; Reach a decision as to the guilt of the employee that takes proper account of the facts discovered by the investigation; Apply a sanction (e.g. warning, final written warning or dismissal) that is proportionate to the misconduct;
Give the employee the chance to appeal any unsatisfactory decision. An employer does not have to prove guilt “beyond all reasonable doubt” but it must carry out a fair investigation, reach a decision that is based on the evidence and apply a reasonable sanction. If not and the employee has more than 12 months’ service then there is a risk of a claim for unfair dismissal. In judging whether or not the dismissal is fair, an Employment Tribunal will consider whether the employer’s approach has complied with the ACAS Code of Practice on Disciplinary and Grievance Procedures that sets out in more detail the requirements listed above. We offer competitively priced specialist employment advice to employers and employees. We are happy to give free initial advice in the form of a preliminary assessment of the issue.

Whiteside By Nick Wells
summit, from here we made our way along the ridge over Gasgale Crags towards Hopegill Head. This is by far the best Lakeland ridge walk in my opinion, not even Striding edge nor Sharp edge equal this.
We parked up at Lanthwaite Green Farm, situated at the foot of Grasmoor and Whiteside, which is almost at the end of Buttermere valley. Walking over Whin Ben we reached the steep ascent of Whiteside, this offered good views of Crummock water, and all the way across the Solway into Scotland. After about an hour of walking and scrambling, we reached Whiteside
At this point we had a bite to eat, enjoying the view from Loweswater to Stickle Pike and Skiddaw next to Saddleback. We then realised that Grisedale Pike was right in front of us, shadowing Outerside and Causey Pike, which we call Saggy Boobs (one needs to be here to see why!). This feature can only be identified from the head of Coledale Valley. After lunch we headed down Sand Hill towards Coledale Hause before entering Gasgale Gill, this offered a magnificent view of Whiteside and the Gasgale Crags. We followed
the Gill which turned out to be an unexpected highlight of the walk, with Whiteside on one side, Grasmoor on the other, and the torrent of Liza beck eating its way through the Gill floor, providing many small waterfalls along the way. Further down, the path hugs the beck along a series of short rock steps and traverses, which look harder than they are, before reaching the foot of Whin Ben and back to the car at Lanthwaite Green Farm. This walk is about five miles in all, and took us four hours. I would grade it as easy to moderate, and would definitely put it in my top five walks so far. If anyone would like to suggest a walk, please email me at

“Food & Country Festival” In my previous articles I have focused on the Sheep Dog Trialing side, so this one is very much based around the Food & Country Festival. The Food & Country Festival side of the event is situated along side the main trials field, and is split over three levels, which creates a fantastic view of the whole area. The committee has worked very hard to accommodate all visitors and the area shows off Cumbrian fare and rural skills which will be of interest to many.. ‘Made In Cumbria ‘ is situated in one marquee where they will be selling and making local produce and crafts. A demonstration kitchen is also situated in this marquee and visitors will be able to watch a selection of chefs cooking some mouthwatering recipes. We also have a Live Craft Village, which will be an interactive village where the general public can have a go, so come along and see what’s happening. The Committee has organized a variety of eating venues for visitors to choose from, which range from
beefburgers, to vegetarian dishes and include ice cream makers Steven & Claire Bland from Abbotts Lodge, Nr Penrith. We hope that our visitors will be spoilt for choice. The Display Arena will keep the whole family entertained for hours in between all the shopping in the Trade Area. Visitors will be able to ‘put their feet up ‘and watch various displays including Fell and Dales Pony, Duck Herding, Mini Sheepdog Display while riding a Fell Pony, Alpaca’s, Jive Pony and much more.

For those visitors particularly interested in finding out more about British sheep there will be representations from some of the well known sheep societies who will be delighted to tell you more about their breeds and answer questions. The show will also be open in the evening when visitors can enjoy a meal whilst listening to local entertainment. I will give you more information on our evening events in my next issue. On Thursday 15th September, we have invited our local primary schools to attend and use this as a great introduction and learning tool for the start of a new term. (If your school is interested and has not
yet received any information, please don’t hesitate to contact me 01931 712516) Friday sets to be an excellent day with a visit from Matt Baker from Countryfile and The One Show. Matt has agreed to have a go at One Man and His Dog on the trials field and we are hoping we can find someone to challenge him. Watch this space!!! The Committee and I look forward to seeing as many visitors coming to this unique event and supporting our Cumbria producers and craftsmen. I will be giving you further information in my next article.

Little Green Fingers June saw a real mixed bag of weather ranging from baking hot sunny days to heavy rain and strong winds – a typical Cumbrian summer! August is a time for enjoying the produce you have grown. Lovely potatoes, juicy tomatoes and crisp fresh salad. It is also the month where many of us have bored children at home asking for food every 5 minutes. The gardening page this month is dedicated to you if your children are driving you mad already - get them out in the garden, you’ll be surprised how rewarding it can be for you all, as long as you stick to the rules.
• Don’t be too ambitious - start on a small scale. Children are fascinated by the process of
planting a seed and seeing it grow; young children enjoy colouring and planting cress in egg shells and as it grows very fast and children can eat in salads and egg sandwiches after only a few days. For older children you could buy a packet of mixed salad seeds and plant in a small window box style tub - there should still be plenty of summer sunshine for them to grow well. Keep it fun and let them do as much as possible by themselves. Give them their own small section in the garden or their own pots, so they won’t ruin your grown up flower beds. Make sure “their garden” gets a decent amount of sun, otherwise nothing will grow and the children will be put off gardening. It’s summer so enjoy eating lollies on sticks - then use the stick as a plant label!
• One thing that really is worth buying is a water spray gun so your children
can help water the little plants as they grow rather than let them drown everything with a watering can. It is also worth investing in their own mini gardening tools - you can buy these cheaply at most supermarkets and garden centres in an array of bright colours.
• Wear old clothes - gardening has a high mud factor that children love so maybe consider keeping some old clothes as gardening clothes. • Be relaxed about what the children are doing and be prepared for a mess, that way you won’t feel frustrated when they don’t plant little seeds in perfect straight lines. • Make sure you’re planting outside as even the smallest job can turn into a huge mess if a toddler is involved. • Garden with your children in short sharp bursts as their attention spans can be short! My son will garden for about 10 minutes but is then more interested in looking for worms and insects to study through his magnifying glass!
NEXT MONTH We look at September in your garden/allotment plus look at what you can do with apples - other than eat them!

Exploring the work of the local council A perfect local councillor should be easy to talk to, hard-working, honest, and represent the best interest of the people in their ward – that was the conclusion which 24 Queen Elizabeth Grammar School students reached on a visit to the Town Hall in Penrith. Angela Milburn, a democratic services officer at Eden District Council, had invited the year 7 Citizenship group to have a look at the Council chamber, visit the customer services area, and discuss the work of local councillors. The group was welcomed by councillors Judith Derbyshire and Malcolm Temple who gave the youngsters an overview of their work. Malcom Temple explained that he wants to make a big difference to the problems which Penrith people experience, be it with roads, refuse collection or anything else which residents in his ward would like to see changed, but he had to tell the students that “it is not quite as easy as you might think”. Judith Derbyshire invited the young people to think about standing for election themselves in the future. Karen Hodgson from Eden District customer services explained the many queries which her team receive from the public. Angela Milburn explored the history of the Town Hall building, showed the students some old sealed documents, and, an absolute highlight of their visit, allowed them to try on the Deputy Chairman’s chain and sit at the dais. Finally, teacher Maria Bates discussed the characteristics of an ideal councillor with the young people and also encouraged them to play their part in local democracy, starting with their work for QEGS’ School Council. This visit will become a regular feature in the school’s year 7 Citizenship programme from September onwards.

LOWER EDEN GIRLS ON TOUR
Lower Eden girls cricket team which is based at Penrith Cricket, Sports and Social Club recently went on a mini weekend tour to Edinburgh, playing two games of cricket against Royal High Corstorphine CC on the Saturday followed by Sunday’s game against George Watson’s College. A fantastic time was had by all the girls and the parents who accompanied them on the tour.In addition to the cricket an “indoor BBQ” - due to inclement weather - was held after the game at RHC, there was a visit to the cinema and an opportunity for sightseeing and shopping in Edinburgh on the Sunday morning. The cricket matches resulted in a comprehensive nine wicket win against RHC, whilst George Watson’s College chalked up a narrow 19 run win in the second match. In both matches the Lower Eden girls team produced an excellent exhibition of batting, bowling and fielding and showed that over the last 12 months as well as developing a great team spirit they have also made considerable progress in the way they play the game. Any girls interested in playing cricket would be very welcome to get involved and should contact Mark Osborne on 01768 866906 for further details. No previous experience is necessary, all equipment is provided and all summer and winter coaching sessions are led by ECB qualified coaches. The team play matches throughout the summer in the Cumbria Junior Cricket League and in addition also play a number of friendly games. Come along and give it a try!

Cricket Corner In one of the oldest parts of the town on the corner of where Burrowgate meets Middlegate, there is something you don’t see in every town these days. It’s an independently owned sports shop, Sportscraft. It is one of the many independently owned shops in Penrith and the Eden Valley, but whilst we might see it as a regular sports shop and retailer, to many it is the shop that you have to travel to from within and outside of the county. Online shopping has it benefits. Dick Spruce, the proprietor has his online shop, but the main reason he has it, is because like any retailer, not to have an internet shopping site is potentially a missed sales opportunity. Starting on the first floor, the reputation the shop has for its range of cricket clothing and accessories is something that simply has to be seen. At the start of the season, for the non-cricketers April, Sportscraft will have up to 2,000 bats in stock. In mid July at the time of this article, it had about 400, but then they don’t just sell bats, they also repair bats in house, all as part of the service. I didn’t know this. So wall to wall cricket is where we are, with all the most popular bat brands like Gunn & Moore, Gray Nicolls, Kookaburra and Puma. I could not believe the stock Dick carries in Cricket whites, with at least 15 types of trousers (about 300 in stock). Like the bats, nothing is made to measure and this is why many travel for miles, to touch and feel the quality of the products and in this case swing them about and check out the weight. Something I did pick up on, however, was the professional set up that goes beyond the selling when it comes to cricket, with Dick
and his staff on the first floor of this cricketers haven. Dicks passion is cricket and he has been selling cricket equipment for over 40 years, as one of the earliest qualified advanced level cricket coaches he is able to offer expert and honest advice based on years of playing and coaching experience. Like him, his team around him are all qualified coaches or instructors, or at the least have a vast knowledge of the sport and the product. You won’t find this on the internet! Well, that is the cricket side of the business, but on the first floor also taking up a bit of wall space is the ultimate fashion accessory in sport these days, yes, the football boot. With some brands changing colour like a chameleon walking across a rainbow, it’s probably one of the hardest products to keep stocked and sell through. Some brands change every few months, well that’s football, but here’s the defined list of the other sports catered for by Sportscraft on the first floor; hockey, baseball, rounders, darts, table tennis, all racket sports, netball, volley ball and rugby. On the ground floor is what I refer to as running or athletics kit. I was reminded that it’s aerobics and swimming, but if it is a pair of trainers you want, there is a well stocked display. Sportscraft will be doing its end of season sale around the time this article is being published and with a force rise in prices from cricket suppliers anticipated at 20% next season, this just might be another reason to get yourself into Sportscraft now!

And Finally......
And eventually we arrive at the end of this month’s Eden Local, your very own free community magazine distributed across the Eden Valley. Thank you for your emails and calls and please keep them coming in. My thanks to all those who have helped in this edition and my thanks to all those businesses supporting Eden Local. With the up and coming events posted in the opening editorial, the closing editorial is based on something that recently happened to a number of Eden Local customers, which led to some calls being received at the Eden Local office. Businesses do get hit regularly by calls canvassing for deals to advertise. As a marketing consultant, I field many calls on their behalf and assist their decision making in getting the best for their business. As a publication, Eden Local is funded by advertising and we generally tend to take enquiries I’m pleased to say. I was asked by one of our customers for advice on whether they should spend money on an advertising concept, which ranged from £6 per week to roughly £30 per week. From a local business and local economy point of view, there are a few questions I would ask when considering local marketing to any advertising agency or company. These relate to cost, value and how the concept can be measured, but before these questions, I would be asking what will be gained by the community and will the funds taken for the local advertising be spent or invested locally? I would want to know if the company was based locally and accessed locally. Something for businesses to consider, whether they have premises or are worked from home, is that there are many ways to market your business. A thriving community is full of local independent and family businesses, but it has to be protected. Local spending boosts the local economy. An investment in locally based business, whether this be supporting a local shop or sourcing skills and developing skills within the community, 13th July 2011 is an investment in the future of the community. My final point is that any money spent, Jackpot Numbers : should give the business the option at no additional cost, to include promotional activity 4-10-20-31 outside of the area if agreed. Jackpot currently I think this answers the question and the view taken at Eden Local. Finally, I would like to take this stands at £2,500 opportunity of wishing you all a great summer, especially those now on their summer holidays. EdenLocal •
