Dear Residents It’s that romantic time of the year for some but not all. The Eden House of Cakes is looking very romantic this month. For me it’s another issue of Eden Local posted through over 6,000 doors to postcodes CA11 7 and CA11 8. Welcome back!
Many of us set out with the best of intentions and a plan for the New Year. I’m no different. Back around December 15th when the January issue went to print, I had ideas and plans for February and then everything changed. Christmas seemed to last a long time, which was great. My family and I did a round trip of 900 miles to catch up with friends and relatives around the UK. For a small family we do cover some ground! I came back and started on the task of the February issue. It seemed a good idea at the time, but nobody was about. Of course eventually most appear or I wouldn’t be writing this now, but so much has changed in a short time - the weather, the news and then the announcement about our cinema. The Eden Local strives to bring good news and secondly, it pushes the boundaries towards assisting and driving the local economy with the support of many local businesses. The Eden Local is in support of community action in trying to retain a cinema in the town. I joined many people from the community at many events and discussions to report and support this campaign. On pages 10 and 12, I have looked back at the Red Castle (Alhambra) of Penrith and whatever the outcome, a point has been made by the community, ‘our’ community about the importance of working together towards a solution. In between my break, I have done my rounds visiting businesses and planning for the future distribution of Eden Local with Royal Mail up until 2013. This is not a misprint (we have a few sometimes) yes 2013. Eden Local has also plotted its expansion programme to increase distribution from CA11 7 and 8 to a further eight postcodes during 2011 to 2013. As
EdenLocal •
a first phase, we will start distribution to CA11 9 and also CA10 1 during 2011 taking our monthly distribution to over 13,000 per month. It’s a gradual development plan, but it’s only been made possible by the local businesses and people in the community supporting it, so a big thank you to you all. A big welcome to those new businesses and I have a special thank you to Steve. From the start of the Eden Local project, he has been an inspiration. Apart from that, his mum makes cracking soup, which I sample regularly with Steve at his work place, thanks Steve.

Tandoor or do we say Tandoori. The word Tandoori is “pertaining to the tandoor oven”. We are once more at the Indiagate Restaurant and I am sampling another signature dish. I met with Abu, the proprietor and once again we talked about food and I got to try the feature dish. What a great job! This month, from the chopping board to the table is an ‘Indiagate Special’ which has a feast of ingredients that comes under the heading on the menu of Tandoori Dishes. Firstly, a bit of background. We have the tandoor, which is a purpose built, cylindrical, (albeit more egg-shaped), clay oven that cooks food at very high temperatures, giving it a very characteristic flavour as it is made from seasoned clay. Traditionally, in Indian homes, it may have been built into the floor or the soil and the tandoor was fired by charcoal. Contemporary tandoors these days are usually gas-fired clay ovens, cased in a shiny metal surround. They are used primarily for the cooking of meats and breads, particularly naan bread. The history of the tandoor and its origins have been much discussed. It’s even difficult to pin down how and when it came to the UK and which restaurant it first came to be installed in. It’s difficult to imagine a clay oven sitting in a kitchen, being stoked with charcoal, but somewhere it did happen. There are mixed stories that relate to the origin, including the tanoo oven of north eastern Persia (contemporary Iran). In the living world, the known origin of the clay oven is EdenLocal
phone: 07881 530085 www.edenlocal.co.uk
northern parts of India where it is made. It is also possible that the Tandoor was from the Indus Valley, which is today part of Afghanistan, Pakistan and north-western India. Another theory is that the tandoor was invented in Egypt. Whilst we know it now as a Tandoor, it is also a ‘tandur’ and ‘tannur’. In one of my earlier visits to the Indiagate, I watched the naan being cooked in the Tandoor. It’s a skill and an art. For me, it was a don’t try this at home experience. On our menu, the Indiagate special includes king prawns , chicken, lamb and mince, marinated with spices and fresh herbs, all skewered together with slices of onion, green peppers and tomatoes and all grilled in the tandoor. Can you imagine the smell? I could just feast on the smell alone. It’s one of those sizzling dishes walked through the restaurant, served steaming on a board, which everyone gets to thinking, ‘I wish I had tried that’, or ‘I wish I knew what that was?’ Well you know now, try it! From the combination of juices released from the ingredients, served with a plain naan, you don’t want to miss any of that sauce. My advice is mop it up. I did! Next month, we have a new idea from Indiagate, which is not on the menu and never been seen in Penrith and the surrounding areas.

The Campaign for Eden Fm community radio With the launch of the Eden Local back in November 2010, it was also the launch of the campaign for Penrith and the surrounding areas to have its own community radio station. Eden Local isn’t my first local publication and Eden FM will not be my first community radio campaign. In this two page update, I hope to let everyone know where we are with the project, what needs to happen now and where it is heading in 2011. Eden Local is the key marketing tool of Eden FM and whilst they have to run in parallel with each other, they are two separate limited businesses. Eden Local is a commercial business, a sponsor of Eden FM and will be the consistent voice in the community, informing the local population about everything there is to know about the radio campaign. Eden FM is a ‘not for profit’ Ltd company. It will be run by a select committee of people who primarily live, work or are associate with the area where the radio is based. There are currently five members of the team including myself and by the end of March 2011, it needs to be nearer 30. In February and March, there will be a variety of meetings for all those who have shown an interest in joining this project to attend. The dates and times of the meetings will be day time, evenings and weekends and they’ll

be posted in local press, on posters displayed in shops, schools and with businesses who are supporting the campaign. From March 2011 www.Edenfm.co.uk will have regular updates and information. Meanwhile, all details will be available via www.edenlocal.co.uk With the increase in distribution of the Eden Local, every home and business in the proposed area of coverage will know about the campaign. We now enter an important phase of the radio station project. In next month’s Eden Local, I hope to confirm the Radio Station premises. On the second page of this report are the prices for local businesses who may be considering advertising or sponsorship. Eden FM is not permitted by Ofcom, the radio regulator, to generate more than 40% of its revenue by on air radio advertisements. It is not a commercial radio station. There will be around six, 30 second ads played in two slots of three, at approximately 20 minutes past the hour and 20 minutes to the hour. There will be opportunities for programme sponsorship and spot advertising. There will be opportunities for businesses and people in the community to sponsor equipment. Apart from the advertising revenue stream, Eden FM with be applying

for grants that are available for community projects. I need you to email me at lee@edenfm.co.uk if you would like more details about joining the radio team. You do not need radio experience and Eden FM will need to draw existing talent from the community to build a diverse team of varied ages and experience across a range of skills and knowledge. If only it was as easy as flicking a switch on! Over the next 10 months, it is hoped that there will be lots of plugs and lots of switches; one of the ultimate aims of any campaign for community radio is that time when the studio one mic volume goes on, which automatically illuminates the on air light.
Be a part of the Eden FM radio team, volunteer your skills for a few hours per week email me now for more details The first milestone of the campaign for a full-time community radio station is to complete a 4 week transmission know as an RSL (Restricted Services Licence). For the 4 week transmission, which is now being planned for November/December 2011, providing enough volunteers are on board by April 2011 and enough funds are secured, an application will be submitted to Ofcom. We need presenters, technicians, helpers on a grand scale. We have to build two studios, kit them out, wire them up and set up the IT. With enough people helping we could be trailing our first transmission before the end of 2011! Drop me a line lee@edenfm.co.uk
Do you have ideas for local radio, here a taster of how things are shaping up with the programming • Weekday shows to include, breakfast, mid-morning , lunch-time, school slot, drive home. • During the evenings up until mid-night there will be specialist programmes and music, for example, live local bands night, 60s, 70s and 80s specialist shows, big bands, Blues, Jazz, sports updates • The weekends will include a review of the week, a morning kids show, rural reports, sports show, classical Sunday show etc, • Around 60 % music and 40 % talking, regular live roadshows from the community
Advertising and sponsorship Advertising for this period, based on a 30 second advert being played 5 - 6 times per day during a 24 hour clock for the 28 day period will cost around £199, with advert supplied. Eden FM is in a position to design and produce 30 second adverts and giggles for around £79. We need businesses to register intentions now if they would like to book advertising on Eden FM or would like sponsorship details. Email lee@edenfm.co.uk EdenLocal

The Lonsdale Alhambra
Top of the bill in January 2011, Penrith has seen the Lonsdale Alhambra Cinema breaking audience records. At the time of writing this article, the story began for me on 6th January 2011, when I received notification that the cinema was to close. My shocked reaction was to send this information to key people I knew and offer Eden Local’s support. There have been many reports of the events as they unfold, which may lead to deciding the fate of this community treasure, which once would have shown the stars of the silver screen in its heyday back in the 1920s. I have attended the recent rallies and meetings and in this two part report, I will present some historic points I’ve researched and let you know about some of the positive actions taking place in the community. There is much history about the life of this ‘jewel of the town’. What is ‘Alhambra’ and why was it originally called Alhambra?
Rory Stewart MP
EdenLocal
phone: 07881 530085
What does it mean? A number of searches indicate the colour red and many searches indicate it means ‘red castle’. The word Alhambra is used in a number of languages. Spanish and Arabic are two of the languages and some translations suggest the word means fortress, castle and even palace. I wonder how many people know that Penrith is known as the ‘red town’, because of its red buildings. Ironically, it appears we have two castles. Both are very key attractions of the town. One is so obvious on the skyline and the other was opened as a theatre, the Alhambra ‘red castle’, to some also known as the ‘Palace of Varieties’. Like many castles, it has experienced many battles. The cinema closed in February 1971 for its conversion to bingo in order to make way for the Regent Cinema. In 1984, the Regent closed, so it was then partly converted back. It has its battle scars including many refurbishments over the years. The original foyer was replaced in the 1930s and it suffered
www.edenlocal.co.uk
info@edenlocal.co.uk
losses like the stalls, which were used to accommodate 800 people in the cinema, sacrificed to house a bingo hall. Like that old car, is it going to be saved or sent to the grave? We have two possible stories to the start of the Alhambra. One was that of a theatre which opened in 1906 and the second, was that it was built by William Forrester and opened in 1910 as an assembly hall. I have traced back some history of ownership from the research available and it appears that it started with the Alhambra Theatre and Picture House Ltd, that reigned up until 1971. By the 1940s, the Graves’ family were the majority shareholders. From 1974 and still today, Graves (Cumberland) Ltd remain the buildings current owners. Whatever the outcome, there will be the celebration of its history or victory. I have asked some people, who like many, have shown their passion and determination to keep Penrith’s surviving castle, which is still in one piece .

The report continues The local community rallies for its Cinema’s future
Dawn Coates
The local people, its businesses, its councillors and MP are working together for a solution The response at the Save Our Cinema rally on 15th January was fantastic. The people of Eden showed their passion and support for its cherished local cinema by turning out on a wet Saturday afternoon in their hundreds. BBC radio cumbria estimated there was between 1500 and 2000 people on the streets. There were chants and songs of support and discussions all around and folk dressed as all manner of film characters. There was a real feeling that the community can pull together and do something. We all need to build on this positive support, attend the future meetings so that all those who want to take action can take on a task. The 300 t-shirts provided by Lakeland embroidery where worn with pride on that day. “It felt quite surreal to be dressed as Darth Vader and be introducing Rory Stewart MP to the platform, outside the Cinema. The whole event seemed to pull the community together and set a positive agenda now we need to keep going and drive the campaign forward” Dawn Coates
Regardless of the outcome as to whether we get to keep the cinema or not (though we must!), it has been tremendous seeing the
way that local people have got together to fight for their town. There clearly is a huge amount of ability and energy and a desperate wish to make things good in Penrith. Clearly the town has had its difficulties over things like the New Squares development, and the recession doesn’t help going forwards. The fact is that the only way that Penrith can reassert itself is by local people taking positive action, be that through a campaign to save the cinema or through volunteering to improve the place or giving time to a worthy cause or activity or simply by just joining in. In our tv, dvd, ipod, facebook world we can so easily shut ourselves away and before you know it there is no ‘community’. It’s been great to see that the locals in Penrith are not giving up – more of it! I’d love to see an arts facility in the town, a shared space where people can join in with activities and ideally one that can also be a venue. We work hard to bring top acts to Penrith and sadly a lot of money ends up going in to hiring the kit to convert the sports hall into a venue for the night. If we had our own dedicated space we could put more on and keep more people happy, connected and proud of their town. Adrian Lochhead, Eden Arts

Valentine special!
A fabulous offer for Hosts who party in February; savings on kitchen prepset, plus a sizzling deal on everyone’s favourite frying pan. To celebrate Valentine’s day, we’ve also got a special saving on the Thanda Heart trivet! Plus a money can’t buy give-away... Every week we’ll be giving away a special Thanda Heart signed by Jamie to one lucky Host! A real money-can’t-buy offer especially for February Hosts... Named after the Zulu for ‘love’.The Thanda trivet contributes to some of the world’s most beautiful forests. Made from African Iron Wood – only dead, diseased, damaged or dying trees are felled. Where a tree is removed it is policy to replace it with seedlings of the same type..
To book your party call Sam Eggleston on 07971 544568 to drag out the felled timber to the forest edge, ensuring the minimum impact on the forest. This wood is then taken to the closest Forestry Station and is sold by auction (these auctions happen in the forests themselves about twice a year) to help offset the costs involved in the care of the forest.
No heavy machinery is ever used in the heart of the forest, hence the use of mules and Percheron horses The beauty of these hearts that are trained to use the sled is that no two are alike. paths that wind through the forests Handmade with love, each
one has its own unique shape and size, just like we do. Use your heart board for chopping, serving cheese or as a trivet for keeping pots from burning the table. The heart comes in a cute cotton bag making this a perfect gift. If you would like to share in Jamie’s success and be part of Sam’s team, please call 07971544568 or sameggleston@hotmail.com

Potatoes part One
It was a rainy weekend when I set out with Neil Hodgson to complete my third story about our Community Farm. When I was asked what I would be featuring this month in the drive for promoting the local economy and supporting the use of locally grown produce, I said potatoes. I was then asked whether I could do something seasonal!
What do we know about potatoes? A star of the big screen today, children know Mr & Mrs Potato Head very well from the series of Walt Disney Pixar films, Toy Story. Mr Potato Head is quite agile considering he is nearly 60 years old (created in 1952). A seventies icon, which whilst pushing a packet potato mix using metal frog like puppets as aliens, that described what humans do with potatoes something like this, ‘they peel them with their metal knives, boil them for 20 or so minutes, then they smash them all to bits, they are indeed the most primitive people”. Did you know that Golden Wonder is a variety of potato? Some things don’t change, but there are some who believe that chips do actually only
come frozen in a bag from a supermarket. A compliment to the nations favourite, fish & chips, they come as a pair, just like Morecombe and Wise. We bake them, chip them, boil them, roast them, crisp them, wedge them and we do quite often still smash them all to bits! Is this a social network for potatoes www.lovepotatoes. co.uk/potato-varieties? When was the last time you did a search for the best potato? I wonder what type of politics drive the Potatoes Council of Great Britain? So traditional, so British, but hang on minute, let’s not forget..... The Potato (Solanum tuberosum) originated in the Andes of South America 8,000 years ago. It was around 6,000 years ago that Inca Indians in Peru first cultivated them, growing them in mountainous regions up to 15,000 feet. The Peruvian Quechua language records more than 1,000 words to describe

potatoes and potato varieties! The potato was believed to have medicinal qualities and was rubbed on the skin of sick patients as a remedy. It was around 1570 that along with tobacco, the potato was presented to Queen Elizabeth I, taken from Sir Walter Raleigh’s colony in Virginia, North America. Today, potatoes are grown on an estimated 19,500,000 hectares around the world. China is now the biggest potato producer, and almost a third of all potatoes are harvested in China and India alone. Asia and Europe are the world’s major potato producing regions, accounting for more than 80 percent of world production in 2006. The UK is the 11th largest potato producing country. In Britain we consume around 94kg of potatoes per person, per year. Do we read what the nutritional value is of the potato, which appears on the side of the bag? Potatoes are so rich in starch that it ranks as the
world’s fourth most important food crop, after maize, wheat and rice. The potato plays a strong role in developing countries with its ability to provide nutritious food for the poor and hungry.
Some Home Grown facts We have about 80 varieties of potato in the UK. You may see on the labelling ‘home grown’ and it’s something worth considering maybe when you are buying your potatoes labelled as home grown in the UK or Cumbria. Are you eating local chips with your locally produced Cumberland Sausage? Like the grey squirrel invaders, we must protect our potatoes. It we don’t focus on using them now, the day we do turn to this
simple vegetable that comes from local soil, it might not be there. There is plenty of soil and plenty of fields. Locally around Penrith and stored in Langwathby, Carleton Farm harvests generally three types of potatoes. The types grown are generally determined by the climate and soil and of course, the price of our potato is determined by the financial climate. If we choose to buy potatoes from someone other than our local producer and if we are directed to certain types, marketed as the best for boiling, chipping, baking and roasts, do we ever look within a mile of where we live at the local farm shop. Most people have heard of Maris Piper. How many know of the Valour or Markies or the Wilja. The Wilja ticks most boxes as an all-round potato for roasting, boiling, chipping and mashing, but here is a thought. The Wilja is grown in and around Penrith and so is the Markie and Valour. So which is cheaper to source and best for the environment and local economy? Potatoes sourced locally or those from Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire or Bedfordshire, to name just a few counties where a lot of key producers to supermarkets of Maris Piper potatoes are based?

25kg. Have you got a cool dark place where you could store potatoes? If Neil Hodgson can store potatoes at Langwathby from September to May, could you store them in a larder, shed or store? It could save you money and it will help the local economy. As a family, a 25kg bag is the cheapest way of buying potatoes. Are they fresh or will they last? The potatoes are harvested in September and stored, they are removed and packaged into brown paper sacks at Carleton Farm as and when they are required, from September to May. The new season potatoes become available from June to August. The local Penrith potato process is the feature in next month’s return to Carleton Farm. I’ll be taking you through the work undertaken throughout the season. I’ll be introducing you to the waxy, floury scale that ranks potatoes. We’ll also be looking at the potatoes that don’t make the grade, but do make it to the trough!

The Wainwright Society and The Lake District Calvert Trust
The Wainwright Society has decided that The Lake District Calvert Trust will be the main beneficiary of funds raised by the Society in 2011. The Lake District Calvert Trust was founded in 1974 and was the very first outdoor activities centre in the UK to enable people with disabilities to benefit from the life-changing effects of outdoor activities in the countryside. The Lake District Calvert Trust residential activity centre is located at Little Crosthwaite, near Keswick, and is situated at the foot of Skiddaw and on the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake. The ethos of the Trust is ‘Challenging Disability Through Outdoor Adventure’ and a varied programme of activities is offered to residential visitors, including climbing and abseiling, water-based activities, horse riding and hill walking/wheelchair pushing. Through intensive instructor training and pioneering equipment adaptation, the aim of the Trust is to enable people to see beyond their disability and realise that they, too, can succeed in outdoor pursuits and achieve their true potential. Today, the Calvert Trust remain the only outdoor centres in the UK able to provide those with the most profound, severe and complex disabilities with challenging outdoor activities. The motto of the
Trust is ‘It’s what you CAN do that counts’. Alfred Wainwright’s Pictorial Guides give ordinary people the confidence to explore the Lake District, climb the mountains and enjoy the wonderful scenery. One of the aims of The Wainwright Society is to introduce a wider audience to fellwalking and caring for the hills, and one aspect of this objective is helping to make the fells accessible to those of all abilities! By raising much needed funds for the Lake District Calvert Trust, the members of the Society will be assisting others to experience the benefits of the superlative landscape of The Lake District as well as providing an opportunity to undertake physical and intellectual challenges outside of their day-to-day lives. The Society hopes to raise funds through its annual ‘Challenge’ as well as from sales of the Wainwright Society calendar. Jake & Elwood are two of the greatest connoisseurs of blues and soul music. Together with their award-winning Black Rhino Band, voted the hottest soul band in Europe, they continue to deliver electrifying live performances to sell out audiences globally. Joliet Jake Blues began life as a drummer with local ‘beat’ groups before moving on to team up with Elwood and use his amazing ‘whiskey’ voice to launch, Blues & Souls Show. They now perform the show in theatres and arenas across the world. Jake once said his ‘best moment’ was when he and partner Elwood were invited onto the stage at Shepherds Bush Empire in London. Here they joined the “Original Blues Brothers Band”, Jake performed his trademark cartwheel, and after the show, composer, Steve ‘The Colonel’ Cropper commented with a wry EdenLocal

Mock Trial competition
Magistrates Joanne McLaughlan, Sula Cotterell deliberate
The QEGS team
A pair of young people are seen fighting in a street. “You’re lazy and useless!” says one of them. “I’m sick of you nagging me! You just want me out of the house!” shouts the other. Then one of them falls to the ground. Was it a push, or was it accidental? That is the question the Queen Elizabeth Grammar School Mock Trial team has to answer. The Mock Trial competition is held throughout the UK in heats - local, regional and then national. Many schools take part, investigating a specially written case, and focusing on developing their roles. Each school has a team which consists of many different parts, like being a magistrate, lawyer, usher, witness, or, like me, a court reporter. This year, our case is about a charge of battery, allegedly committed by a character named Kelly Daniels towards her brother, Andy Daniels. The incident happened on a street where the

Beth Thompson and Hannah Braithwaite, the two defence lawyers, discuss the case
first witness, P.C. Jaswinder Hear, saw the fracas from the eighth floor locker room of the police building. Then a second P.C., John Hobday, is assigned to the incident and goes to arrest Kelly. The prosecution allege that Kelly punched Andy, but Andy himself has an alcohol problem and had been drinking before the incident so he did not give a statement or press charges against his sister. There are more roles which extend the pupils’ knowledge of the criminal justice system and many of them give pupils a chance to show off their acting skills. The witnesses are quite a fun and exciting part to play as they can get into character and have a laugh but the lawyers have to mean business - they have to be serious, and ask a lot of questions. So far, we have been visited by a magistrate called Mr. Drouet and we were given special permission

to go to Penrith courts and view a few of the trials. We were very lucky in that we were allowed to see the cells and go into the dock! I am a year 9 pupil at Queen Elizabeth Grammar school in Penrith and when I heard about the Mock Trial competition, I was immediately interested as it offered the chance of being a court reporter. Many people joined because they were interested in the court roles, but some joined because there was a chance to act, as the witnesses each have a complex character and it takes good drama skills to play them well! We have spent a lot of lunchtimes practising for the competition with a lot of laughs! We are all looking forward to the day of the competitions and hopefully, we are in with a chance of winning. J K CONNECT CONSULTING’S HANDY HINTS TO :
BOOSTING YOUR CONFIDENCE! No matter who you are or what you do, experiencing periods of low self confidence is perfectly normal. Here are a few ideas to help you overcome negative thinking, move forward and feel better!
Focus on the positives! Acknowledge your strengths, achievements and all the positive aspects of your life. Adopting a more positive approach will make a real difference to you and how you view yourself and others.
Get motivated! Decide what you want and need from life including at home, work and in
relationships etc. Working towards your own personal goals and making realistic steps forward will give you a greater sense of satisfaction.
Let go of negative emotions! Unnecessary feelings of guilt, blame, resentment,
inferiority or anxiety will hold you back. Learn to break old patterns of behaviour, release the real you and start appreciating your own value and worth.
Trust yourself to cope! Anyone can find it a bit of a struggle to deal with the high variety
of demands that we face. Feeling stressed or overwhelmed isn’t the issue, it’s how we manage it that counts. Gain new stress and time management skills to help.
Handle difficult people effectively! Knowing that you can deal with any potential
conflict and successfully negotiate with others will really assist with confidence. Running in the opposite direction isn’t always the best solution!
Learn to be more assertive! Give yourself permission to say ‘no’ and put yourself first
occasionally. Getting what you want, need or deserve without upsetting other people is actually possible!
Be a great problem solver! Be realistic about any problems that may crop up, that’s just how life is. Don’t let them floor you, meet challenges head on and even learn to enjoy working out solutions.
Venture out of your comfort zone! Be a little more courageous and try things that you would never have attempted before. You don’t have to go white water rafting to gain a sense of achievement, just take small steps at a time and don’t forget to give yourself a pat on the back along the way.
Have a laugh and embrace your individuality! We can all take things
too seriously at times, so relax and try to appreciate all the aspects of your personality.........both good and not so good!

Over £3m of investment announced for new homes in Eden Eden District is set to benefit from over £3 million of investment to build affordable housing, homes for rent and shared ownership apartments for local residents in Penrith. The new funding has been announced by the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) who are providing £2.7 million and Eden District Council will contribute £500,000. Eden District Council’s Housing and Planning Policy Portfolio Holder, Councillor Richard Turner, said: “This is great news for everyone. These developments will provide 79 new homes and represent an investment of over £3m into the District. This is an excellent example of the commitment of the Council and its partners to creating good quality affordable homes that are so desperately needed for local people.” Deborah McLaughlin, executive director North West at the HCA, said: “We have worked closely with Eden Council and its housing partners to help meet the local affordable housing gap. It’s great news that this crucial funding will provide new, high quality affordable homes which I’m sure will prove very popular with local people.” The investment will create vitally needed affordable homes in Penrith, comprising of 46 units of affordable housing being constructed by the Riverside Housing Association as part of the Penrith New Squares development. Over £1.1 million of funding has been provided by the Homes and Communities Agency to build 28 houses and apartments for rent. Eden District Council has provided a further £500k to fund 18 shared ownership apartments. Mally Irving, Development Manager for Riverside said: “Riverside are delighted to be working with the HCA and Eden District Council on this very exciting project that will provide much needed affordable housing for the area. We are pleased to have received support from the HCA for our continued investment in Cumbria and more specifically within Penrith. The Penrith New Squares development
represents our first key project outside of Carlisle and it is hoped that it will be the first of many delivered in partnership with both the HCA and Eden District Council. “Riverside is committed to providing high quality, affordable housing in Cumbria and to continue to play our part in delivering much needed affordable housing for the region, this project is an important step in helping us achieve this.” In addition the Homes and Communities Agency has made available a further £1.6m for Impact Housing Association to develop 33 affordable homes at Old London Road, Penrith. Councillor Richard Turner added: “We are hoping this may not be the end of the good news for affordable homes in Eden, as a planning application for a community led affordable housing development at Crosby Ravensworth is set to be determined by Eden District Council’s Planning Application Committee on 20 January 2011.” For more information about Eden District Council visit www.eden.gov.uk or follow us at twitter.com/edencouncil

Future local radio star of Eden FM The Cumbrian Guitarist Ben Eggleston
Eden
Are you perhaps thinking of taking up an instrument? What’s stopping you? Why on Earth haven’t you started yet? It’s never, ever too late and frankly that boring TV program you keep watching is wasting your valuable playing time. Lack of access to, or funds for a teacher are no excuse either as there is a wealth of shared knowledge available online. Also, I can assure you that the quality of affordable gear has improved dramatically over recent years so now is the time. Do you already play? If so then it’s about time you got together with others in your situation and formed a band. Gone are the days of putting an advert in the local paper and hoping for the best. This is the age of the internet. It’s so much easier to find people who’d like to start a band now. The number one way to improve your playing is by playing with other musicians. Remember, Google is your friend. Maybe you’re at stage three in the rock n’ roll rollercoaster? You’ve got together with some friends, got your rehearsal space and put a few songs together but what now? Once you’ve got this far it’s natural for some apprehension to surface. I know I’ve been in situations where I’ve questioned whether the band is good enough to take the next step and play out live. However, the route around this is to stop thinking like a band member and start thinking like your target audience. Would you
enjoy going out and watching your band? If so, then get out there! It’s completely normal to feel a little nervous but frankly, those pesky nerves are out to ruin your fun. Push nerves aside, get on stage and I promise you’ll never look back. You don’t have to be one of those who pull faces whilst gyrating their hips and then finish off with a big guitar solo played behind their head (Note – those who know me, stop sniggering). To put it in guitarist’s terms, David Gilmour and Edward Van Halen are two very important players who have two very different stage personas. A good boost of confidence can be gained from playing a gig to friends first. Maybe a party or hiring the local village hall and only inviting those whom you want to play to. Take the leap. Get out there and get playing. Apparently there’s some bloke who’s keen on featuring local bands on his future radio show. Have you ever wanted to work on a rock and roll radio show (now there’s something you don’t get asked every day)? Passion rather than years of experience is what’s key here. I’ll be looking for help in many areas on what promises to be the greatest little show around. Get in touch. Haven’t you read any of the above? Contact - 07581434723 Visit - www.badfettle.webs.com

WOMEN’S CRICKET RISES FROM THE ASHES A new venture for Penrith Cricket Club this season is the formation of a women’s section. The club have been asked by the Cumbria Cricket Board to run one of the new women’s teams in Cumbria. A second team is being set up by Furness CC and hopefully more teams will follow. The reasoning behind the move is to provide support to the Cumbria women’s teams and the Penrith and Furness teams will feed into the county set up. With the increased interest in cricket following England’s triumphal retention of the ashes in Australia this winter and the successful exploits of the England women’s team over the last few years, it is hoped that this new venture will also be a success. Penrith Cricket Club has had an involvement with girls cricket for several years with regular girls coaching sessions and last season provided seven members of the Cumbria under 17 team who defeated Scotland under 17s in July and nine members of the touring party that played at the Taunton Cricket festival in August. Three players, Sammy Jo Johnson, Meghan Montgomery and Lizzie Sykes, represented the county women’s team on a regular basis. They also represented
their county age group teams with Meghan captaining the under 17s and Lizzie the under 15s. Other players connected to the Penrith club who represented Cumbria at various age groups last season include Beth Osborne, Ella Telford, Aimee Martin, Amy Hullock, Libby Telford, Holly Cowper, Becky Thompson and Emma Dunseath. The problem for the girls in the past has been arranging fixtures and to get a game they have either had to play for one of the boy’s teams or turn out for one of the club’s senior sides. However this season the Penrith club is going to run a girl’s under 13 team which will play in the local boys under 11 league, as girls are allowed to compete against boys two years their junior, and the women’s team will have fixtures against the Furness team as well as teams from the north east.
Winter coaching sessions for the women’s team will be held on Sunday afternoons from 1.30pm to 3.30pm on 6th, 13th, 27th February and 13th and 27th March. Coaching for the girl’s team will be on Friday evenings from 6.00pm to 7.00pm starting on 21st January. Anyone who is interested in getting involved or finding out more should contact Martin Montgomery on
07880 605297 or email
monttirril@hotmail.com , or turn up at one of the sessions which will be held at the QEGS Penrith sports hall. No experience is necessary and all equipment will be provided although you are welcome to bring your own and all sessions will be run by ECB qualified coaches. There will be a small charge for each session to cover costs. For further information contact Martin Montgomery as above

Whats next? And finally we come to the close of the 4th issue of Eden Local community magazine. My thanks to all those who have helped. Coming up in our March issue, we will once again pick up on the regular stories and in addition, we have some new writers and new advertisers, who have joined a devoted group of businesses supporting Eden Local. The Eden Local plans have been shared with all with regards to expanding into new areas, so that every business and home in Penrith will receive a copy through their door from week commencing 2nd May 2011. Following on from recent discussions with H & H Reeds Printers, we are hoping to be producing a larger size publication next month, which we hope will enhance our presentation of the editorial and advertising. It will of course create more space for larger photos and images. In next month’s issue, it is hoped that news may be out about the application for Protected Geographical Indication status of the Cumberland Sausage. Whatever the outcome, Eden Local will be homing in the on campaign for retaining its Cinema in Penrith. Without wishing 2011 away, we will be featuring events for Easter. It’s hard to imagine that British Summer Time kicks in again in March on 27th. If you would like to help with Eden Local, or have
ideas for articles, please drop me a line at lee@ edenlocal.co.uk. With our first sports article and a larger section growing covering events and activities, Eden Local would like to hear from you.
