Dear Residents A warm welcome to the March edition of your new size Eden Local Community magazine. My thanks to all those businesses who, without their contribution, we would not be here. A welcome to our new writers for volunteering their time to contribute. They are Bekah, Clare, Michael, Nick and Ron. My thanks also go to my regular writers Derek and Ben. Where would we be without some excellent photos thanks to Tommy Martin. Eden Local is community based and its strength is based on the people behind it and the local community that supports it. The result of that work so far is seen here with our 5th issue. We are starting to grow our ‘foodie’ and outdoor sections. Please check pages 17 & 19 Oliver McGeorge, Young Cumbrian Chef of the year 2011, will be in the kitchens at the Stoneybeck Inn on 16th March, alongside head chef Dave Farrar, preparing his own signature dish. We still have a way to go with developing our entertainment section, so if there is anyone out there who would like to help with co-ordinating a gig guide, please drop me a line. It’s of no surprise that I’ve been out and about in the community again, in search of this month’s business and community stories. Working with an expanding group of volunteers, I have spent a lot of time with the Save the Alhambra Cinema steering group. I’ve been formulating a fundraising strategy, which at the time of writing this article, is just being rolled out. There is more about this on page 10. It’s going to be a busy few months and with the campaign for Eden FM Local community Radio now moving up a few gears, we have various updates through the magazine. This month, we have our first update about the World Sheep Dog Trials. Thank you to Clare Savins for taking the time out to show me around the site at Lowther Estate, where it will all be happening. It’s given me a good idea of just how big this event is going to be. Always busy, but never too busy to take a call or answer an email. I hope you enjoy your community magazine this month Lee Quinn, Editor

The campaign for community radio has found a home The campaign for Penrith to have its own community radio has taken some giant steps forward. Following on from last month’s article, we have now signed up over 20 local businesses, who couldn’t resist the offer of 28 days of advertising for £199. There are about 5-6 slots remaining. The details about advertising and sponsorship are now available on www.edenfm.co.uk After a number of discussions, I have agreed on the premises for the radio station. It will be based at Ullswater Road Garage, in the Cumbria Mini Centre. During March and April, subject to raising funds, I will be working with the senior team and friends of Eden FM to set up the rooms with some small modifications to some existing offices. These will become
Eden
Lee Quinn
studio one, studio two and an administration office. As a radio that serves the community, it has to be seen as well as heard 365 days of the year, so I have been searching for an outside broadcasting (OB) vehicle, but not just any OB unit. I had to find one with a 9 metre mast and a vehicle with the capability to park and transmit live back to the radio centre. It also needed to be a vehicle that could get about in the community in all weathers! It did mean another one of those 700 mile round trips to a TV/radio graveyard in Sussex, but I am confident that again, subject to raising the funds, Eden FM will become the owner of a unique but vintage piece of equipment (ancient in fact) as it is an exBBC Landrover Discovery with a telescopic 9 metre mast. More details will be on the website about
the progress of this project, which includes the opportunity of 12 month sponsorship packages for groups or businesses to sponsor the vehicle (more details on this will be available around 30th April).
Can you help? This is how it begins! Eden FM needs volunteers. You do not need radio experience as there are many functions and skills needed to run a community radio and training will be provided. Maybe you are retired and have experience in radio or you’ve been a technician? Maybe you are at school and would like to get involved in 3rd tier radio/ media and obtain some valuable experience for the future? If you are interested or would like to know more, please call me on 07881 530085 or email lee@edenfm.co.uk

The Eden FM team continues to grow

There is nowhere in the world I would rather live than the Eden Valley. Stunning scenery, beautiful villages, a wonderful environment to bring up children in and the friendliest people you could ever wish to meet. I’m Bekah Fowler, local radio presenter, business owner and Mum to 2 children, Emily and Joseph. Strictly speaking I’m an outsider- I’ve lived here for 11 years now so in about 40 years I will be just about classed as local! You may well recognise my name from my CFM days. Between 2005 and 2007 I was their main fill in presenter as well as hosting the Saturday Breakfast Show and Sunday Evening Late Show. I left to begin my own PR Company Buzz North which aims to offer affordable PR to local companies in Cumbria. I have been privileged to work with some great clients including Cumbria County Council, Augill Castle and Appleby Bakery. As well as running Buzz North and being a Mum to Joseph (8) and Emily (11) I also present the Evening Show on The Bay in Lancaster – so I’m pretty busy. I have worked in broadcasting since the age of 18, and still love the feeling of being on air. I don’t mean that in an egotistical way at all, I think it’s just in my blood and I could never give it up.
Eden
I was asked the other day who is the best person I have interviewed. It has to be Ken Dodd, he was just adorable, such a nice man, although it was nearly his last interview as he fell head first down the stairs when he went to the loo! I’m extremely passionate about the Eden Valley and so when the opportunity arose to be part of Eden Local I jumped at the chance. Buying local, supporting local and embracing local are all extremely important to me, I absolutely love living here, there really is no other place like it – I think my first paragraph says it all. The Eden Local Community Magazine is a great way to truly open the lines of communication between businesses, community groups and residents. I have really enjoyed reading the diverse range of articles so far and can’t wait to being involved in the project. I know many of the local businesses and groups in the area already but I look forward to discovering hidden gems that I am not aware of.
Eden FM is still a little while off yet, but I’m very excited about seeing a radio station develop from scratch; although I have worked in radio for 19 years I have never been involved in a venture like this. I call it a venture, but really it’s more of an “adventure”. When I first met with Lee Quinn, I asked him how he wanted me to be involved with Eden Local, and what exactly he wanted me to do. His response was “everything!” With that in mind I’m sure I’ll be popping up all over the place in the coming months, be it in print, setting up Eden FM or making endless cups of coffee!

It’s time to rally the troops! Ben Eggleston
As you should all now be aware Eden FM is gaining momentum weekly. This is not some stab in the dark at tin pot ham radio, being broadcast from a garden shed. In November we embark on a real adventure on the airwaves. In a real studio, with real equipment and real content. My contribution to this will be a weekly rock show. Part of this show will feature local bands and musicians. I’ll play your demos and announce your next gigs. I want you to come in to do live sessions and interviews. If your drummer spontaneously combusts and you need a
Eden
replacement, I want to help. Soon we’ll have the facilities to cover outside broadcasts too. Fancy having your gig aired on my show? However, none of this will be possible without you and your input. Perhaps you’re thinking “Would our music be classed as rock music?” The simple rule of thumb here is – if your music features a guitar, then it may be considered a form of rock music. Be it Indie, Alt, Emo, Screamo, Pop, Hard, Soft, Classic, Punk, Blues, Acoustic, Electro, folk or any mixture thereof. I want to hear about you. I want to hear from groups and solo artists. I want to hear from musicians who write original music and those who play covers. Get in touch with me if you’ve being playing the circuit for years or you’ve yet to do your first gig. My show will be your opportunity to promote yourselves and your music. For those that listen this will be the perfect chance to find out about local music happening now. Hear the regions talent, listen to their music and interviews then plan your night out at the next gig. Obviously free publicity is hard to come by and submissions will come in thick and fast. To help me
keep things organised I request a press pack with your response. Your press pack should ideally include the following – • Biography • Demo CD • Photos • Gig dates • Link to your website, Facebook group, Myspace page etc. If you don’t have any of the above, fear not! I am a musician too. I’ve been playing for a long time and I’ve probably been in a similar position. I’m going to be your champion. All I need is something to work with. If you’re struggling with a demo then grab a camera phone and video your next rehearsal. A written biog about you shouldn’t be too much of a stretch and if you don’t have an internet presence, then perhaps now is the time to think about it? If you don’t have a CD then find a way to show me you can play and maybe I’ll ask you to come into the studio for a performance. The more you can give me, the more I can give our listeners. The band wagon is approaching. Don’t sit back and let it roll by. Email me your info or questions at the address below. Email benegg75@googlemail.com Phone 07581434723

Eco Club worksEmma towards Green Flag Kirkbride How much rubbish do we produce on an average day? What’s in our bins? And how can we improve on this? These are the questions to which a group of volunteers at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School wanted to find answers, so with the help of Senior Waste Education Officer Ian Garrow the students rummaged through the school’s waste bins. 14 young people, in small groups, tipped out rubbish bins in the school hall and sorted through the contents: scrunched up paper, used teabags, half-eaten sandwiches, banana skins, sweet wrappers, pencil shavings, sawdust from the DT workshops... the students sorted them all into recyclable categories. They were glad to be equipped with aprons and gloves, but nothing could be done about the smell! Each bag of recyclable paper, card, plastic, metals, food, and textiles was then weighed and the result entered into a spreadsheet, which Ian Garrow analysed. He found that each student produces an average of five kilos of rubbish a year. This is a very low result, partly explained by the fact that the school has been working hard to ensure that all paper and plastic is recycled rather than thrown
into normal bins. In most schools the figure is above ten kilos per student per year. QEGS does not intend to rest on its laurels, though. The school’s Eco Club is working towards the prestigious “Green Flag”
status, achieved by the most environmentally friendly schools nationwide. In order to gain this award, the group is looking at how the school can cut down on wasted energy and reduce the amount of printer paper and printer ink which it uses.

A problem solved by a problem shared The power is with the people in Penrith and the community around it. If every group, business and individual can help to raise or pledge a sum of money, we can all achieve this. We will be able to purchase the Alhambra building and secure the future of the Cinema within. Ullswater Community College is one school that has pledged £1400. It’s our largest school, but there are many more, 29 are listed on the Cumbria County Council website. If the remaining schools raised an average of £200, that would be another £5,200 for the pot! How much can all the pubs raise? And what about all of our local societies, clubs and other organisations? Then there’s the businesses like banks, building societies, estate agents, hairdressers, shops, garages, restaurants, takeaways, supermarkets, the list is endless. You could say it’s as big as a Yellow Pages, but to achieve what needs to be done, every page must be turned and everyone will get a call in the area that the Cinema serves. Can we contact all of them by the end of this month? Yes we can with your help. There are 26 letters in the alphabet and 616 pages in the directory. In Eden, there are over 1,500 businesses known with Royal Mail addresses. If they all pledge £150, we would have £300,000 to add to the existing fund and at the time of writing this report, we are almost half way there. Some cannot afford this, however, some can afford more. We need more people to help coordinate the fund raising. At the moment, we have a small team of volunteers. This needs to be a team of around 40 champions who can co-ordinate and head up groups. We can only make so many calls and chase so many calls, but EdenLocal
phone: 07881 530085
it’s a problem shared. There are over 20,000 homes in the Eden District. The community is rallying and it will achieve if we share the workload. If everyone in those homes, just one person per household, could raise £5, that’s another £100,000! Look around you. There is always a bucket or a collection tin. As a community and a nation, we are never selfish and very rarely, if ever, do we ask for our own community. As a community, many give a lot, many give a little and many give want they can afford. Whether it’s a penny or a pound, it all counts. How many of us dial up and give away a £1 to keep a celebrity skating, dancing or in the jungle? We donate to Children in Need, Comic Relief and to many fantastic charities and why not? They are all great causes. We have a great cause and its almost in your backyard. Just for once, just once, just this year we

need to Save Our Cinema. Just for this year, these next few months please help. The celebrities will always be skating, there will always be an opportunity to vote for an up and coming star, every year there will always be appeals. This is one appeal which needs not just your vote. Don’t let 30th April be the day the curtain comes down on our Alhambra. Make a pledge, help raise some funds. Your community needs you Candidates wanted for local Council elections Eden District Council is encouraging residents to stand in the local elections on 5 May 2011 as either district or parish councillors. Two information sessions will be held at 4.00pm and 5.30pm on Tuesday 15 March 2011 in the Town Hall, Penrith for anyone interested in becoming a district councillor. It will be an informal opportunity to meet Eden District Council’s Director of Corporate and Legal Services and Returning Officer as well as the Council’s Elections staff, Democratic Services and Scrutiny Officers, IT staff and two retiring Councillors to ask any questions about the process and role of a Councillor. Formal qualifications are not required to become a Councillor but good communication, IT, organisation and problem solving skills are useful as well as knowledge of your local community. There are legal requirements to become a Councillor and in order to stand for election, you have to be: •18 or over on the day of nomination; •a UK, Republic of Ireland, EU or qualifying Commonwealth citizen; and meet at least one of the following four criteria: •be registered as an elector in the district; or •have lived in the district for the past twelve months; or •have occupied as owner or tenant any premises or land in the district for the past twelve months; or •have had your main or only place of work in the district for the past 12 months. You don’t have to be in a political party to stand but if you do want to represent a political party, you would need to contact the local branch for assistance. Eden has a comprehensive induction programme for newly-elected and re-elected members and training and development programmes are continually available and updated to ensure that Councillors have all the information and skills needed to perform their role. There are 38 Councillors representing 30 wards in Eden. Councillors are not paid a salary but they do receive an allowance which recognises the amount of time spent working in their wards and attending meetings.
District Councillor for the Alston Ward, Richard Turner, said: “Within our area many prospective councillors come from a background of community involvement, for example as a Parish or Town Councillor or village hall committee member. If elected as an Eden District Councillor you have to balance the obligation to represent the interests of your ward members with your obligation to serve all the residents of Eden District. This is probably the greatest challenge for any member, particularly during the times that lie ahead, when difficult choices will have to be made.” If you think you may be interested in becoming a Councillor attend one of the sessions to find out more information, or visit www.eden.gov.uk or telephone 01768 212253 or email: elections@eden.gov.uk

Carlton Farm Potatoes part Two
Before we get into the process of local potato growing, I would like to say a big thank you for the feedback on the recent Carleton Farm articles. It has been a re-education for some and I am one of those people. A few months ago after the Carrots and Leek articles, I was asked by a lady what the next feature would be. I explained the next feature was potatoes and I was then asked if I would consider doing something seasonal. I would like to dedicate this article to that lady. I remember roast potatoes as a child and as a family, we are quite traditional with our Sunday roast still. I also remember
EdenLocal
phone: 07881 530085
tasting what I thought was a potato, which didn’t taste that good to me and I was told it was a new potato. I had a similar taste spasm, when I ate a roast parsnip for the first time. My grandmother has told me stories and I have distant memories of being in a field and seeing people jumping off the back of a tractor trailer. These people were potato pickers. So here we are in the season of the ‘old’ potato and this month, we are covering a summary of the old potato and its life. Later in the year, I’ll hopefully have the opportunity to cover the complete process from seed to harvesting, storage and sale
www.edenlocal.co.uk
info@edenlocal.co.uk
and of course ‘new’ potatoes! So to continue from last month, this year Carleton Farm harvested about a field and a half of old potatoes. The fields Neil used for growing last year were in two locations around Penrith. Did you know that late in Summer, the greens of the potatoes are burnt back and the potatoes remain in the ground? Did you know that this part of the process is done so that the skins harden up? The process seals the potato for storage and it helps hold its goodness for a long time. The potatoes we buy in March are indeed old potatoes of the 2010 vintage. Of course they have to be stored in
EdenLocal • 17
the correct temperature and the right, dry, cool temperature in a dark place. I visited the potato store with Neil, at Langwathby. I’m afraid the photos are rather dark, but that’s because it’s a potato store. Stored until required, then from large wooded grates the potatoes are sorted. They are put on to a conveyor belt system. At one end is a man with two 25kg empty bags. Before him is Neil ‘eye of an eagle’ Hodgson, picking out the potatoes which don’t make the grade. The local pigs love ‘em’ so I’ve been told, so there is no waste. Back to the beginning of the sorting, the potatoes get a
good shake so the earth, which has kept them cool and assisted in their preservation is shaken off, then they get sized on another belt. The small potatoes drop through and they get used for seeds. Then I suppose you could say they are hand picked or selected and put into the bag. On this day, even I did my part. I sealed the brown paper sacks and helped load them in the van. The end result was another one careful owner and another low mileage product, produced in the fields around where you live. I do not believe that there is a cheaper potato in Penrith, based on the fuel cost alone. I

won’t be telling you the price, only that when I did check the price against a local superstore giant, Neil’s 25kg bag when halved to a retailing size of 12.5kg, was a pound cheaper. Small quantities of potatoes can be purchased from the Farm Shop and if stored just like those in the potato store, will last. Meanwhile, I’ll be back with another update from the farm. I’ll also be talking to our very own Tim Lorton of Scrummy Spuds, who spends almost a lifetime baking and filling potatoes.

From the chopping board to the table Indiagate, 11a Burrowgate, Penrith, Cumbria CA11 7TE tel:01768 210020 / 01768 210050 Last month we went to north India and re-discovered the origins of the Tandoori, tracing the influences to Persia, now Iran and the Indus Valley, that is now Afghanistan. This month, we were going to look at a new idea, but a change in the wind has taken us south east. Maybe it was a trip made across the Bay of Bengal and along the coastline. Trading ships headed south east. First to Burma then down into the Andaman Sea and finally arriving on the coast of Thailand. With so many borders and regions, Indian food, like the evolution of man, has evolved over many thousands of years. What is still evident in today’s Indian Thai dishes, is that the sources of ingredients can be tracked right back and that the spice trail has been forged by land and sea in this region for many centuries. In my visit to Indiagate this month and in my discussions with Abu, the proprietor about this month’s dish, before I got down to some

serious tasting, we talked about ‘Black Pepper’, the ‘King of Spice’ in this region. It is also known as the ‘master Spice’ and for those of us who recall the seventies; we are not talking about any ‘old spice’. Black peppercorns can be traced back over 4,000 years and today, are still known as ‘Black Gold’. During the middle ages, they were used as a type of currency for trading. Pepper was the first spice used in Europe and for this reason; it had great social and economic value. Up until the 19th century, pepper was a luxury only the rich could afford. Pepper became affordable to the average person in the early 1800s. This is just one spice, but black pepper in the spice world is numero uno, the most widely traded spice in the world. So out of India and to the influences that bring us to this month’s, featured Indiagate signature dish. It is simply shown on the Chef’s Specials as Thai. How can I describe this dish? It
has a blend of Indian and Thai spices; about 15 to be exact. Even I do not know if this is 8 Indian or 7 Thai spices. It could be the other way round. The spice trail comes through Burma. It has coconut milk that could be from India, Burma or Thailand, our familiar turmeric, cumin, coriander seeds and then you have the ginger, the chillies and lemongrass in a fusion of tastes. I’m sure I also tasted cinnamon. It seemed more Thai than Indian to me. My taste buds were tingling soon after the first few tastes. I have tried curries from many regions, the most extreme being fruit bat. This was in Mauritius, but closer to home, here with the Indiagate Thai, I believe it’s a must try and see your taste buds take the spice trial which, invites you to another mouth watering dish from the chopping board to the table. Meanwhile I’m off to spend some peppercorns….

“BECAUSE IT IS THERE!”
Ron Kenyon posing for a photo on a boulder below High Crag above Buttermere
This is the famous statement said by George Mallory when asked why he climbed mountains. The word climbing now however has a very wide spread of activities. In the 1920’s climbing in mountains in the Alps and beyond for many was the main focus and their activities were leading towards this. Now “climbing” is very diverse stretching from bouldering on small boulders through to climbing huge mountains in the Greater Ranges – encompassing climbing on crag; ice falls and climbing walls as well as walking and spreading into ski touring, fell running and mountain biking. For many mountaineering is the main aim with trips to the Alps and beyond and linked to this will be the other facets of the sport however some may be focused on a certain segment such as bouldering; trad crag climbing; sport climbing or just climbing walls. In this area we a blessed with a wide spread of climbing activities and many people discover this whilst here and many others move to this area because of that. I was introduced to walking in the Lakes, many years ago, by my aunt Kate and a little later to rock climbing by Keith King who taught at the Penrith Grammar School – life changing experiences !!
Why does one climbed ? Big question with a lot of answers ! • Feelings of elation at accomplishing a climb or frustration at not doing it. • Communing with nature on a crag as a peregrine falcon or raven flies past. • As with most activities the making often life time friends around whom your life will often revolve. • Ability to “escape” and recharge the batteries • And many more. There are many parallel worlds in the cycles of human activities. Sports such as Rugby; Football; Cricket, Athletic and Badminton can consume one’s life with training, matches; coaching etc or be done in a more leisurely fashion. You may be active in organisations such as the Lions club or Savoyards or Penrith Players or Penrith Show. There are many subcultures in the Eden area and you may be involved in just one or many and such involvement will usually bring pleasure and fullness to life. Climbing with its diverse spread of activities is a microcosm of these parallel worlds. In future articles I will try to explain and highlight these activities and help to explain what is out “there”.

Donation to Lake District and Pennine Mountain Rescue Teams
photograph by Kevin Whalley
Readers of Eden Local may recall that in December I wrote about the Wainwright Society calendar and mentioned that at that time the Society had raised £4000 for Mountain Rescue teams. I am delighted to announce that all the calendars were sold and the total raised was almost £9000. The Management Committee agreed to make up the sum to £9000, to be shared amongst Mountain Rescue Teams in the Lake District and Pennine areas in recognition of the excellent work that the teams do in all aspects of their service. A total of £6900 was given to the teams covering the areas in the Society 2010 Best of the Rest Challenge, namely, Kirkby Stephen,
Penrith, Kendal, Duddon & Furness and The Cave Rescue Organisation covering the Limestone Country area of the Yorkshire Dales. The remaining £2100 was shared amongst the other Lake District teams.
to Kirkby Stephen MRT enabled them to purchase both the snow chains and winch ropes. The photograph shows Kirkby Stephen MRT displaying one of three sets of snow chains that have been purchased for their Land Rovers.
The Society has also been very pleased to learn that Mountain Rescue Teams will now be able to reclaim the VAT on their equipment costs, which will further enhance the money that has been donated.
The Society will be producing a 2012 Calendar, which will be on sale later this year. The profits from sales of the 2012 Calendar will be donated to The Lake District Calvert Trust, the Society’s main beneficiary this year.
Although the teams do not always have a particular project for which they are raising funds, the Society learned that the team at Kirkby Stephen was in great need of snow chains for their three Rescue vehicles as well as new winch ropes. The £1600 donation

Talk the walk It was about 3 months ago that Lee came into the shop and asked if I would like to write about my passion. I am not a writer, I am a walker, so he said well ‘you talk about the walk and I will write it’ so here we are. This is an introduction to a page that I hope you will enjoy. My daughter Amy introduced me to walking about 4 years ago. I explained to Lee that walking has been an inspiration to me and helped me recover from two serious back operations, the last being in January 2010, this is why I would like to share my walks with you, as it has motivated me to stay on my feet. Over the coming months I’ll be discussing my walking routes, seasonal changes, safety on walks etc with you. Please feel free to drop me a line to share your walks and experiences. You can write to me at nick@edenlocal.co.uk. I will be back next month and I’ll leave you with a thought ‘ walking is about enjoying some wonderful scenery and making use of what is on our doorstep. We all have different abilities and for this reason I will always be looking at more than one way to take on a mountain’. Nick Wells

from Penrith to Peter Kay and back I get to try some fantastic food, meet some great people and get behind the scenes in businesses to get down to finding out what they really do and what they are about. Businesses need to advertise and what I stress to all those in Eden Local is it is not just about the advert, it’s about the people and the business, behind it. At the end of November I was in the right place at the right time, when I was discussing with Stuart Jackson at NBM Travel his future marketing strategy, when a call came through confirming that their allocation of tickets was

confirmed for the Peter Kay Live ‘The Tour That Doesn’t Tour – Tour’ show. My impulse purchase, seconds after he put the phone down was a Christmas present for my wife, the date being the Valentines weekend and being a man two presents in one!!! Or maybe a Christmas present that would see me into the new year I’ve been to a few concerts, it’s always been the train, the tube or the car and sometimes that hour or more wait to get out of multi storey car park. On the road with NBM continued heading for the tube station to get onto a tube station platform. Then the standing up on the last train, If you make it to the last train home, if infact there is a last train home?. Well, this is a short summary of the NBM experience, which my wife and I had. I don’t pretend to be a coach travelling person. The last time I got on a coach to go to a staged event was ABBA in 1979, as a young lad. Many of us do excursions when we are away on holiday, mainly because we want to explore and we don’t have a car. So why is it so many of us, cutting back in these times, we still need to enjoy life. We spend time on the internet finding the right seat at the event we want to go to, we then almost double that figure in getting there. Then there is the drive or train journey home. Not forgetting the safe place for the tickets, when they arrive, the panic that they might not or get delayed. The phone calls finding out when they were posted. Peter Kay Live was at the metro

centre in Newcastle. The NBM coach picked us up at Sandgate, Penrith around 5pm. As we got onboard the driver handed us an envelope with our tickets in it. We set off and arrived soon after 7pm, time to sample the culinary delights of a large venue and have a glass of wine. Well we weren’t driving home. Then another feel good factor, when we entered the arena, the stage was at the far end from the main entrance, in a short-time we had a short walk to our seats which were in an elevated position

to the left of the stage. For those that were at the back or more than 10, 20 or more rows from the stage that viewed Peter Kay on the big screens either side of the stage or the central screen above the stage, he does look like he does in real life. The show finished at 10pm we were back in Penrith by Midnight, no Cinderella setbacks. Years ago there was a campaign about letting the train take the strain, which is okay if there is one. For me and my wife we had a real evening off. Our Thanks to Andy and his team.

It’s all happening at Penrith Cricket,Sports and Social Club! Despite the cold, wet and windy weather and the start of the cricket season being over two months away social functions are taking place at the club and there are plans for other events before the season commences in mid April. The inaugural Casino Night , planned by the newly formed Events Group, took place on Saturday 5th February.Over 100 people attended and had the choice of trying their hand at Roulette, Blackjack or Poker. There were clearly some experienced gamblers attending as over the course of two hours the eventual prizewinners were able to substantially increase their stocks of “chips” from their initial 3,000 to as many as 40,000 – they wished it was real money! There is a Sportsmans Dinner at the Club planned for Saturday 19th March where a two course meal will be served followed by speaker, Jeremy Coney, who is an ex New Zealand cricket captain and is currently a commentator / summariser for Sky TV and Test Match Special.Graham Monkhouse will be MC for what is sure to be an excellent evenings entertainment.Tickets are priced at £35 and places can be booked by contacting Andy Hall on 07968 445883 or at a.d.hall@talk21.com. CricketForce Day 2011 takes place on Saturday 9th April at the club.CricketForce is an ECB initiative which Penrith CC,S & SC takes part in each Spring as part of essential ground and maintenance preparations for the forthcoming season. It is the largest volunteer event in English sport and is sponsored by NatWest Bank to the tune of £250 for every club taking part.Anyone is welcome to attend to help as we try to make CricketForce Penrith 2011 the biggest event in Cumbria. As well as volunteers to carry out all the jobs we also need sponsors to contribute to material costs for the day.If you are able to help in any way please contact Lee Hutchinson 07738 913176 or at phathutch@aol.com. What’s coming next? In truth and in my brief experience of putting the Eden Local together, as I draw this issue to a close, I don’t always know what’s next. You’ll always have regular articles continuing. I’ll be back out on the farm and behind the scenes in local businesses. There will be new stories starting and a guarantee of new businesses joining. Next month there will be more pages and we do have more writers from the community signing up as we strive to develop further your community magazine. Before the April issue starts being distributed on 4th April, the mothers day cards will be up, so Happy Mothers Day for 3rd April and we’ll be into British Summer time on 27th March. There will be more about your pledging to Save our Cinema next month.
