Welcome to Frenchfield

A warm welcome to our visitors today, their players, staff, supporters representing Dunston UTS our match officials, our regulars and new supporters. Today is a fantastic Community club day with the young Bonny Blues here and the mums, dads and relatives. Welcome to you all. I’m sure you’ll have a great time at Frenchfield Stadium today. Watching the Washington match was something we all needed and seeing teams as we discussed last week, now in the relegation battle that hadn’t anticipated being here, as Kyle May has said in his report, “we’ve put ourselves in a good position”. There are other teams now in the struggle with some really tough matches ahead of them, who you wouldn’t want be wanting to play. Looking at the fixtures today on page 24, we have today’s table which hasn’t really changed since Saturday as nobody has played. We also have the current form table which isn’t always a true reflection at the moment, with some teams actually playing matches and some not playing more than one or two, if that in the last 4-5 weeks. We have been lucky and psychologically with games and points in the bag, whilst being able to play, just puts more pressure on those with more than 9 or 10 or more games to play. Physically even with the extension into May, it will be challenging. On page 18 is the ‘Run in’ with those teams placed 14th down to 22nd in the league. Some results could be close to sealing futures in this today, but in the next seven days we’ll see more unfold. Today like any match has a lot riding on it. We all say who we didn’t expect to be in this part of the table, but back in August neither did we! Today’s realities will unfold with Jarrow Roofing’s home game against 4th placed West Auckland. Bishop Auckland are at home to 5th place North Shields, 12th place Whitley Bay on a bad run are at home to Marske United, which at this stage with the teams below them just 6 points behind, three of all on 41 points and with Team Northumbria coming from behind last week to beat 3rd place Consett, that could prove to be a vital 3 points? Enjoy the match, Lee What have we got for you today? Going into the match, it looked easy to everyone and based on the score of 7 – 1, this game went as planned. Had they scored first, it could have been a totally different outcome. A goal would have given Washington the confidence to really take us on……… We came together well. We created chances, we settled in early and we didn’t let them get a foot into the game in the early stages. By not letting them grow in confidence, we grew stronger as the game progressed. We were very disciplined. We stuck to the system, credit to all lads, we were communicating well and encouraging each other and as a result our confidence grew throughout the match. What we have now, we didn’t have when we set out to play the top six teams. We had a bad run at the end of January, losing at home to West Auckland and Sunderland RCA and then we hit Morpeth, Stockton, Shildon and Marske. I sense that what the lads had been through in the first half of the season, was on their minds after my straight losses. Morpeth we could have won. It was just the one goal, but the win against Whitley Bay, then Team Northumbria came at the right time. Last weekend we were strong as a team and the changes brought restored confidence and self-belief. Grant had a great game, competitive, he wins his tackles and took a great goal. Because of the attitude the players have, whilst learning all the time, they are also supporting each and it helps individuals improve. We’ve seen this in the way the lads are on and off the pitch with each other. They are all mates and a good bunch of lads and that’s helped the team in the transition of where we were, what we have been achieving. Continued on page 5…………
Billy’s Blog
Continued from page 4… Robbie has played some of the best football I have seen him play against Washington. This comes from learning, working and playing with the experienced players like Andy, Martyn and Grant.
Congratulations to every player and supporter.
You can see this confidence building in the way they support each other. It’s helping the team in its development as a unit. Watching Tyler player, you can see him bringing the ball out of defence and it is attributed to a developing selfbelief that is growing in the team.
To avoid relegation will give us all the lift to look forward to next season, even though it’s still unknown which League that will be.
Building on that point, we’ve been dealing with the situation and we’ve faced together with a developing positive mental attitude and naturally, you see this each week in individual performances that reflect on the end result. The recent form and commitment we have seen, has put us in a good position and other teams didn’t expect to see us here. The Whitley Bay and Team Northumbria results have given the team and our supporters a boost. When I first came in, I knew it was going to be a challenged. A lot of what we have done is gone back to basics, simple uncomplicated. Today’s match will be a test; the side we beat back in November has had some changes and they had some good results away from home. We’ll get out there and stick to the system we have and the lads will do their best as they have been doing. We set a target of 5 wins in the last 10; we have two the sooner we achieve our target the more pressure we apply to the other teams around us.
It’s been a good week for all of us who want to see a positive and happy club.
My admiration for Willie Paul continues to grow. He truly is a club legend and we are lucky to have such an individual as part of our club. He hasn’t had the number of starts he would have liked, however, once again his character and respect for the club shines through. Whenever I see him, whatever he is asked to do, he does it with a smile on his face. He still seems as fit and enthusiastic; a credit to his family and I only hope he continues to be part of the club for a long time to come. Another guy working his way to becoming a club legend is Skipper Grant Davidson. Certainly a person and player who gives his all for the club; a manager’s dream and would grace any team we have had over the years. As I have said previously, every game it’s vital we get behind the team. North Shields away next week and we have a full bus of supporters travelling to gee on the lads. Prior to today’s game, we have a number of our Juniors down where Kyle May and Andy Coyles will be passing on some coaching ideas and their experience. It’s so important that every junior player and their family feel part of our club and hopefully part of our football family in the cause of building the club’s bright future. .
Next season we look forward to commemorating our 125th Anniversary. Anyone who has been a part of that history, we would love to see you down at Frenchfield Park to reminisce about special times and memories. If you have any mementos, please let us know. Res non Verba Billy

DUNSTON UTS F.C. BRIEF HISTORY
Welcome to the visitors
The club first saw light of day in 1975 as a humble works outfit. The previous club Chairman, John Thompson, with some of his fellow workmates at Her Majesty’s Stationery Office Gateshead, decided to form a football team and joined the Newcastle City Amateur League. Early success inspired John to develop the club and it moved to a new base, The Bay Horse public house in Whickham. The club name was changed to Whickham Sports F.C. Playing on a public parks pitch in Dunston, the club entered the Northern Amateur League. Numerous successes followed at this level including League Championships and League Cup wins. In 1980 the club joined the Northern Combination League. Further League and Cup successes followed and a move to a base nearer the home ground seemed logical. The club then moved to a new base at the Dunston Mechanics Social Club and became known as Dunston Mechanics F.C. As the club became more ambitious a piece of land in the locality was leased from Gateshead MBC and the committee began to develop the present ground. At this stage an approach was made to the Federation Brewery for sponsorship to assist in the progress of the club. When they kindly agreed to become the club’s main sponsors, the name was changed to Dunston Federation Brewery F.C. After finishing as League Champions and League Cup Winners in 1987, the club left the Northern Combination League and joined the Wearside League. Following a period of four seasons in the Wearside League – being League Champions twice and League Cup Winners once – the club felt a need to seek new opportunities and an application was made to join the prestigious Northern Football League. During their time in the Wearside League, the club had made considerable improvements to Federation Park with progress to a higher status of football in mind, and their application was successful. The club had now realised one of its main ambitions and so entered the National Pyramid of Non-League Football. In its second season in the Northern League the club won the Second Division and was promoted to the First Division. That season also saw the club reach the last eight of the national FA Vase competition. The club is now an established Northern League club having won the League Challenge Cup three years in succession from 1998 to 2000. They also won the J. R. Cleator Cup in 1999/2000 and 2000/2001. Season 2003/2004 was one to remember when the club won the Northern League Championship for the first time and also lifted the League Challenge Cup. They also reached the final qualifying round of the F.A. Cup – the furthest they have ever reached in that competition. After such a magnificent season in 2003/2004, the club went one better the following season when they repeated the Northern League Championship and Challenge Cup Double and also lifted the J. R. Cleator Cup once more.

In 2009, having been without a main sponsor for the previous three seasons, Mr.Shaun Sadler of UTS Engineering kindly agreed to provide a generous sponsorship package and it was agreed that the Club be known as Dunston UTS Football Club. The name of the ground has been changed from Federation Park to The UTS Stadium. The Club enjoyed a momentous season in 2011-2012 when finishing third in the Northern League and earning a visit to Wembley. After a memorable run in the FA Vase, the side went on to lift the trophy with a 2-0 victory over West Auckland Town. Over the years the club has always recognised that success on the field must be coupled with success and hard work behind the scenes. The efforts of the management committee and ground staff at The UTS Stadium have ensured that the ground is a credit to the club. Many of the back room staff at the club have been involved since in was founded in 1975, some as former players and others as management members on the playing side. It is a tribute to their commitment and hard work that the club has become one of the most successful and respected in the North East.

Juniors Chairman Karl Collinson A huge welcome to Frenchfield Park especially all players, parents, brother's and sisters from Penrith AFC Juniors. It's fantastic to see so many children down as I think it's so important for them to see that getting into the 1st team is a real possibility if they continue to put the work and dedication in. We're proud of being able to have produced a number of youngsters who are now at professional clubs and the club has never been so successful with teams across both boys and girls teams consistently playing in cup finals and challenging for league titles. This is the first 'Juniors Day' that we've hosted and it's the club's way of saying 'thank you' to everyone for all their hard work over the last few months regarding all the club events and fund raising that the juniors have been involved in. Hope you all enjoy your afternoon and fingers crossed that the Bonny Blues can pick up another 3 points.
Castletown Colts 0 Penrith Panthers 3 Report by Karl Collinson The Panthers went into this game looking at continuing their impressive displays against the older U14 teams whilst looking at picking up 3 valuable league points. Panthers enjoyed much possession early on with the influential Harvey Forster pulling the strings in the centre midfield role. Out wide Josh Harrison was putting in some quality deliveries and the energetic Callum Wills was keen for a goal. The breakthrough came after Forster dinked a ball over the top and Reon Morrison stretched to poke the ball into the bottom corner. Colts rarely looked dangerous as Leo Wallace and Finlay Awde were dealing with any threat with great confidence. Ben Dargue and Ed Wright at full backs were enjoying large spaces to push forward and Harry Dinsdale was winning every tackle in a man of the match performance. The Panthers should have doubled their lead soon after when the skillful Morrison danced through the Colts defence only to be brought down. Morrison dusted himself down and took the spot kick only for the Castletown goalkeeper to save superbly. The Colts 'keeper was at it again from a Wright free kick which was heading into the top corner only for the ball to be tipped wide. Panthers were awarded another penalty before half time when danger man Morrison was again brought down, this time Forster stepped up and made no mistake. The second half started similar with Penrith Panthers playing some lovely football and Harvey Reay in goal playing the sweeper role superbly as he orchestrated his defence. Wills, Ferguson, Forster, Jackson all came close to scoring but it was Morrison who scored a peach of a goal to make it final score
Page 11
Penrith started the game on the front foot with James Atkinson creating a great goalscoring opportunity in the first couple of minutes. Some solid defending from the keswick centre back kept the score still level.
Juniors
Penrith wolves 3- keswick reds 1. After extra time.
Penrith grew through the first half and created some good opportunities with top scorer Luke leanord coming close on a few occasions., but to be beaten by a resolute keswick keeper. At the break it was 0-0 but Keswick came on strong second half with some superb defending from man of the match Danny Lund keeping the visitors out. A fast move from the Blues midfield sent Luke Leanord through to score a great low effort in bottom corner. Keswick came back again and scored after some good pressure to level it at fulltime. Only one team turned up in extra time. The Blues fitness now showing. James Atkinson laid off to Luke Kemp to rifle home from 20 yards out. The cherry on the cake was a late rebound tucked away by Luke Kemp. A great team performance.

Most memorable match and why? The FA Cup second qualifying round replay at Frenchfield Park against Scarborough Athletic, which Penrith won 4-3 on penalties, in 2013-14. But Boxing Day's game 6-1 league win against Bishop Auckland was special too! Favourite players - past and present? Present: Grant Davidson always gives 100 per cent - I'm a bit biased as he's my nephew! Past: Billy Williams - who's still giving the club per cent now! Name: Janice Sowerby.

31/03/2018 Ashington 0 Markse United 3 – Ebac Northern League Division One There’s at least one thing that can be said about recent games involving Markse – they’re not boring, and this was no exception. Three penalties. Two penalties saved. Two sendings off – one highly controversial. Apart from that….. The first and game-defining incident came in the 13th minute when Colliers left back Jay Hornsby made contact with James Fairley as they both ran for the ball in the box. Fairley tumbled over and referee David Carr awarded a controversial penalty and then added to the controversy by sending Hornsby off. Ashington – both on and off the pitch – were furious. Craig Gott scored from the spot. Up against 10 men, Markse didn’t have to play at full throttle for the rest of the game and were able to manage the game, dictate the pace and play within themselves. In the 35th minute they had a chance cleared off the line and two minutes later they were awarded a second penalty when Tony Stephenson handled the ball to stop a goal and was also shown a red card. There weren’t any complaints about that decision. Gott stepped up to take his second spot kick only to have it saved by Colliers keeper Conor Grant, diving to his left.Marske made it 2-0 when Andrew Stephenson passed it wide right to Fairley who rode one tackle and then pulled it back from the byline for Curtis Round who applied the finishing touch. And then in the closing minutes of the half Chay Liddle had a shot hit the post, with the ball falling to Fairley whose follow-up shot was saved by Grant on the goal-line. The second half was mostly a formality. Markse keeper Robert Dean was pretty much redundant for 99% of it, apart from saving an Ashington penalty in the 55th minute when Leon Carling fouled Damien Stevens in the box. Stevens took the spot kick and fired it straight down the middle, with Dean managing to get a foot to the ball to send it clear. The last goal came in the 58th minute when Fairley intercepted an Ashington pass, took it past a defender and placed his shot past Grant diving to his left.
Continued….. After that, the visitors had a slew of shots, but most of them off target. The Ashington players who were still on the pitch deserve a lot of credit. They didn’t throw the towel in, showed commendable application and kept of working with their backs against the wall. Playing Marske at the best of times is always going to be a tough test. To be down 10 men makes it an uphill task; down to nine makes it a mountain to climb just to keep the scoreline respectable. The Colliers at least achieved that. And finally, a quick word about the Ashington fans. They were obviously aggrieved at the first red card. By the time the second one came they started to celebrate and enjoy the adversity. Their song about the silent “R” in Marske was the most entertaining song of the season so far, I just can’t repeat it as some readers may be of a nervous/fragile disposition.

Now booking Advertising and Sponsorships 2018 -19 Season In the next two weeks, the prices for next Season will be posted to all existing commercial supporters. Next Season we launch our countdown to the big 125 year as we head into 2019 (1894 – 2019). A new pricing structure for the ground advertising will include; premium and standard pitch side boards, internal and external fence advertising and other areas of the stadium. There will be affordable options to sponsor various parts of the match programme which include the existing and new reports. With the right support and funding, we have the potential to increase the pages in the programme to 48, the largest this season was 32, but we do have two home matches left! Following the trial of the New Community Match Day programme, which included sales in the town and for the first time it incorporated all aspects of our club and all its teams, we hope all our teams will agree to sell some programmes as they are included. This could generate £200-£300 per season per team.
