It’s just like the buses, 3 months ago we were struggling for match reports and updates in today’s programme and now I have simply run out of space! Winning motivates writing it would seem. Straight after the Jarrow Roofing game I caught up with Kyle May. The last time we had spoken was just before the Ashington match on 23rd December. We hadn’t played since 25th November.

We were on 15 points then and 3rd from the bottom of the table. Our form had improved prior to our break in play. Progressing in the Cumberland Cup and League Cup, we had lost two matches in the league but we had also taken 6 points in the league. Kyle’s determination in preparing the team for 23rd was about getting the team to play as a unit and playing the full 90 minutes. At that point he had seen a lot of improvements and the team were working together more but it was early days and there was still a lot to be done. His point at Jarrow Roofing was, “It’s probably happened a bit quicker than we expected, but it’s a credit to the lads. It’s not just down to me and Andy. I’ve given them instructions and they’ve more than taken them on board, so all the credit goes to the lads. They’ve earned the last four victories and the unbeaten run of five and it’s because they’ve bought into what we are doing. I can’t praise them highly enough for the way they’ve been, it has been excellent. Your better players have got even better. Keeping clean sheets and staying in games, the game opens up for you and they’re taking their chances. We have no doubt now that we will create chances and openings. We just need to keep it tight. Referring to the Jarrow Roofing match, Kyle emphasised that it’s hard getting there on a Tuesday night for 7pm. They were straight into the game on a freezing cold night, but to be honest that’s the best we’ve started in two or three games. Re today’s game, it’s quite straight forward, we’re going to take them on.”

PENRITH AFC 6 V 1 BISHOP AUCKLAND Tuesday 26th December 2017 Penrith Afc went ahead in this match when Martyn Coleman pounced on a fumbled save by Bishops' goalkeeper Ryan Graham from a Brandon Robertson strike - an easy goal on 21 minutes! Bishops then started to look the more likely to score, and after a shot went over the bar by a couple of inches, minutes later Shaun Ryder (its on the team sheet!) did score, equalising, and the teams went into half time level at 1-1. The second half was almost all Penrith, with Stuart Dixon rarely troubled in the Penrith nets. Andy Murray-Jones was next on the score sheet, tapping in from a corner after some dreadful defence, another easy but well deserved goal. Next up it was Coleman again, with his second and Penrith's crucial third goal. The build up came from from an excellent pass from Moynan to Robertson who fed the ball to Coleman - who made it three. Dixon did have to pull off one good save at the other end, but Penrith were now dominant and it was man of the match Murray-Jones who got the next goal with a superb header from the right of the box into the back of the net. With 15 minutes to go the bandaged Murray-Jones was replaced by Connor Shields who had time to score not one but two more goals, firstly picking up a clearance and advancing on the Bishops' goal and calmly slotting the ball home, and then with Coleman evading Graham on the right of the box, he passed to Shields who was perfectly placed to put in the sixth and final goal. Guisborough Town 1-2 Penrith By Karl Collison Penrith ease relegation fears with victory at Guisborough Town as they climbed five points clear of the relegation zone with a 2-1 win at Guisborough Town on the Saturday afternoon. In the only Northern League game to survive the weather, goals from Martyn Coleman and Connor Shields saw the Cumbrians come from behind to claim a big win. Nathan Steel had fired the hosts into a 23rd minute lead but Penrith responded through Coleman only five minutes later. Shields’ winner came in the 70th minute and the win put Penrith five points clear of third bottom Jarrow Roofing. The visitors started well and almost took the lead with their first chance in the fourth minute through player-manager Kyle May. An inviting corner picked out May and his header had the ‘keeper beaten but Matty Lovatt was on hand to head off the line. Penrith looked the brighter in the opening exchanges and the created another chance in the 13th minute. Brandon Robertson and Adam Main linked up well to find Shaun Gardner but he could only drag wide from 20 yards. Guisborough were struggling to break down a very organised and disciplined Penrith side and it wasn’t until the 20th minute when they registered their first shot. Joe Ferguson collected possession 25 yards from goal and tried his luck but it never really troubled Gareth Copland who collected at the second attempt. Against the run of play, Guisborough broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute. Lewis Maloney lifted a free-kick into the penalty area where Robbie Hebson totally missed his attempted clearance gifting Steel the ball. The former Billingham Synthonia forward wasn’t to squander his chance as his back-heeled effort beat Copland to give the hosts the lead. Just before the hour mark, Penrith almost took the lead. A perfectly weighted dink played substitute Shields in and his effort had Nixon beaten but lacked power meaning Ferguson was able to clear off the line. After Guisborough had created a couple of early second half chances, Penrith took control as Coleman went close twice. Despite going behind, Penrith continued to look bright and deservedly pulled level only five minutes later. A ball over the top was flicked onto Coleman and he took the ball round the goalkeeper before picking out the far corner from an acute angle. With 32 minutes played, Coleman looked to collect his second of the afternoon. Taking responsibility of a dangerous free-kick, the former South Shields forward drove a low effort through the wall but Jordan Nixon was able to save. A few dubious refereeing decisions were going against the visitors as the first half came to an end and despite looking the brighter, they went into the break still searching for a winner. Less than two minutes into the second half, Guisborough created a half chance. Ben Hugill picked out Maloney but the former Northern Ireland Under-21 international dragged a shot harmlessly wide. Soon after, Jay Wilson whipped a cross into the Penrith penalty area but Steel’s header failed to find the target. Firstly, the ever-dangerous forward was fouled in a dangerous position. He dusted himself down to take responsibility but a superb save from Nixon prevented the free-kick. Less than five minutes later, a through ball found Coleman in the penalty area and his sharp turn gave him room to shoot but his curling effort just say evaded the top corner. Guisborough were still looking dangerous in spells and they went close in the 69th minute through Wilson. Thirty yards from goal, Wilson fired a powerful effort that dipped at the last minute but it dropped a matter of inches wide. Penrith’s deserved winner came 20 minutes from time. A through ball played Shields in and he let fly to drive an effort into the top corner from 18 yards to the joy of the away dugout. Plenty of effort came from Guisborough as they searched for an equaliser but they failed to create any real chances until the last kick of the game. A teasing cross found Brian Close but his header was easily saved and the referee blew for full-time to give Penrith a big three points. West Auckland have a unique history - they are double World Cup winners! In 1909 and 1911 the mining side travelled the lengthy and expensive journey to Italy and beat their club opponents to win the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy, also dubbed football's first World Cup. The Club was founded in 1893 and played their first matches in the Auckland and District League. The following years saw 'West' move around several local leagues until in 1909 they were elected into the Northern league for the first time. The famous 'World Cup' exploits which saw 'West' win the Sir Thomas Lipton trophy outright after a second trip to Italy in 1911 also caused them extreme financial problems. This resulted in the club being disbanded in 1912 and the 'World Cup' being sold to pay off debts. Two years later they were back in business and spent the following 20 years moving around the local leagues including a single season, in 1919, in the Northern League, changing their name to St. Helens Utd, for that season only. In 1934 they were once again elected to the Northern League, taking the place of Esh Winning and have retained membership ever since. The club's first honours were gained in 1960, winning the League championship by two points from newcomers Whitley Bay.The success was due to a good start to the season and to fine teamwork, for which their reputation was beginning to grow. The same season saw them reach the quarter final stage of the F.A. Amateur Cup drawing 1-1 at home but losing 2-0 at Hendon. 1961 was probably the best season in the Club's history, not only was the Northern League championship won by four points from near neighbours and arch rivals Bishop Auckland, 'West' also reached the final of the F.A. Amateur Cup losing 2-1 to Walthamstow Avenue at Wembley. For the next 30 years 'West' had very barren times until 1991 when they won the 2nd Division championship gaining promotion to the 1st Division, where they remained for six seasons until relegation in 1996/97. 'West' quickly bounced back in 1997/98 when they finished runners up.
1998/99 was a very exciting season in the Club's history when they reached the 1st Round proper of the F.A. Cup for the third time, (Barnsley 1959 & Stockport 1961) with an away tie against Yeovil Town. After a 2-2 draw at Yeovil and a 1-1 draw at West Auckland, a penalty shoot-out saw Yeovil through.The Club also finished a credible 5th in the League that season as they did also in 1999/2000 and 2005/06. David Bayles took charge in the summer of 2005 and led the side to 5th place in his first season (2005/06) and then 6th place in the following season. 2007/08 began with an FA Cup run that saw West within minutes of a place in the final qualifying round of the FA Cup before defeat in a replay to Bamber Bridge. After his shock resignation, Lee Ellison had a short lived spell as manager before Phil Owers took over and steadied the side and led them to escape the drop zone.as the new player manager. However after performances slumped to a worryingly low and 10 games without a win, Ray Gowan came in but even he was unable to arrest the slide and promptly resigned at the end of the campaign. Owers departed early in the 08/09 season with Brian Fairhurst appointed as Manager. Exciting news filtered in throughout the summer of 2009. Firstly, West Auckland were able to retain their First Division status due to Sunderland Nissan folding. The Club then received sensational news that, to celebrate their Centenary of winning the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy, Juventus had agreed to a re-match in Italy. Shortly afterwards Hartlepool legend Brian Honour was appointed the new manager in the hot seat. Brian and his successor Wilf Constantine struggled to get West back on track and both had short lived spells in charge. For the third season in a row, a third manager was appointed - Peter Dixon arrived on Monday 7th December 2009, swapping a promotion push with Crook for a relegation battle. West stunned the Northern League with some superb results and finished the season in a scarcely believable 16th place despite having a -41 goal difference and 5 points from 19 matches when Peter took the reins. 2010/11 saw substantial progress made on and off the field. Peter Dixon’s side broke Club records for their highest ever points tally on the way to finishing in 6th. There were many memorable results including wins over champions Spennymoor Town, runners up Consett and FA Vase treble winners Whitley Bay. They also came close to causing a shock at Conference North high fliers Workington in the FA Cup. Although it culminated in a case of so near but so far,
West had a quite extraordinary campaign in 2011/12 that saw them play at Wembley in the FA Vase Final. However hopes of elusive silverware were dashed in a 2-0 defeat to Dunston. They also finished as runners up in two more competitions, being pipped to the title by Spennymoor and losing 4-1 by Team Northumbria days after their Wembley appearance. The 2012/13 season saw West bow out early on in the FA Vase in a rematch of the previous year final whilst in the League a poor end meant West slipped down to fourth late on. . The 2013/14 season saw West return to Wembley in the FA Vase final, this time against Sholing FC, a 1-0 defeat solely down to the heroics of the opposition goalkeeper and the inability of the West forwards to score. Also a productive FA cup run to the 3rd qualifying round where west were knocked out by Hednesford. West finished 5th in a season which saw them play 18 league fixtures in the final 4 weeks after a season extension was rejected. Barely two months into the 2014/15, Peter Dixon was dismissed as manager following increased tension between manager and board, that season saw 3 permanent manager and 2 caretakers, and the season saw Stephen Skinner leave at the end of the season. June 2015 and West were without a manager again, Up stepped former Boro striker Andy Campbell, who had just lead Norton and Stockton Ancients to promotion and success in the second division cup. He hastily rebuilt the team & finished mid table with 50 points to easily avoid relegation. Andy started his second season with Richie Storrs but after 10 games & only 1 win they stood down. They were replaced with a joint management team of Darren Williams, ex Whitby & ex Sunderland Player & Steven Skinner, also a former pro with Carlisle & Queen of the South. This was Skinners 2nd time at West. Mark Hudson who stood in as interim Manager continued as 1st team coach & player. AT the halfway point of the season it was decided to dispense with the services of Darren Williams & the management of the team became the sole responsibility of Steve Skinner. Steve Skinner resigned before the end of 206-17 season leaving West to secure a place in the 1st Division by having to win their last match which they managed. During the summer break Gary Forrest & Stuart Niven were appointed as Manager & Assistant & they began to build a squad to compete for the 2017-18 campaign.

Meet the Visitors Adam McHugh – Goal Keeper A goalkeeper who last season played for Blyth Spartan’s. The Bishop Auckland born keeper has also been on Hartlepool, Forfar and St Mirren books. Danny Parker- Defender Well known to Gary and Stuart from their Shildon days. The Central Defender has also played for Bishop Auckland, Durham City and Motherwell Darren Richardson - Defender Signed from Shildon at the back end of last season who plays in the left back position. Darren 28, also has a eye for goal and is a fast “no nonsense” versatile player. Previous clubs include Darlington, Bishop Auckland and Shildon Lewis Galpin - Defender Lewis needs no introduction to West fans, he was part of the team that went to Wembley in the FA Vase Final. Lewis was involved with South Shields who won Division 2 last season. He plays in defence either on the left or in the centre. Anthony Bell – Midfielder The attacking Left Winger came through the Cardiff development squad, had some impressive displays at Darlington, Shildon and lately at Whitby Town Denver Morris – Midfielder Denver won Man If The Match when North Shields won the FA Vase in 2015 at Wembley. The Attacking Midfielder/Forward played his football at Morpeth Town last season Previous one to one 5th August 2017

West Auckland Pen Pics (Continued) Michael McKeown – Midfielder Central Midfielder Michael had played for North Shields since joining them from league rivals Seaham Red Star in 2014, winning promotion to the Northern League’s top tier just months later. McKeown was also in the Robins starting line-up for the FA Vase Final in 2015, a game they won with a 2-1 win over Glossop North End Amar Purewall - Forward Played for Gary at Shildon during last year’s campaign, the Striker came from Darlington where he played for four seasons. During his time their he won 3 promotions, and scored over 60 goals Ben Wood - Forward The U18 ex- Sunderland trainee has played for Newton Aycliffe and Shildon, the Striker has netted plenty of times for both teams and hopefully do the same for West Nathan Fisher - Forward Nathan joined West from local side Spennymoor where the Striker was not getting as much game play as he wanted. He came through the Middlesbrough youth academy. He has also played for Consett, Gateshead and Darlington 1883 Management Gary Forrest – Manager Gary joined West along with his assistant and coaches towards the back end of the 2016/17 season, previously he was with Shildon where he won 7 trophies during his 12 years there including the Northern League Division 1 title. He took over Shildon when they were in difficult times, on and off the field and although it took a few years to win his first trophy. He left Shildon in Jan 17 and after a short break from football he is looking forward to steering West back up the league. Stuart Niven – Ass. Manager Stuart had been Gary’s second man during his reign at Shildon. During his playing career Stuart has played in midfield for Ipswich Town and Barnet FC Paul Connor – Player/Coach The former professional striker has turned his hand to coaching. He has had plenty of football experience during his career playing for Middlesbrough, Gateshead, Hartlepool, Stoke, Rochdale and Swansea to name a few. Chairman ‘Billy’s’Blogg Being Manager of Penrith has never been an easy task, I am well qualified to comment having been that person on 4 occasions, Kyle May has approached his first step into the job in a most positive way, I have been impressed with the way he has moulded the players into an organised unit and of course full credit to the players reaction in buying in to Kyles style of management. We now witness a team with a will and commitment worthy of taking the club into the latter end of the season with a renewed confidence. Kyle would be the first to accept Andy Coyles input has been invaluable, I know Andy is hoping our recent form will result in attracting more supporters in making Frenchfield Park a fortress. The step from Westmorland League standard to Northern League is recognised as a huge challenge to players ,therefore its very pleasing to see reserve players grabbing that opportunity It is obvious from Martyn Colemans wholehearted performances he is fit and enjoying his football ,hopefully his experience will benefit the very promising Connor Shields .Seeing players enjoy representing the club certainly gives me a lift.

Seaham Red Star 0 Penrith AFC 2 By Karl Collinson The Bonny Blues continue their recent excellent form with a dominant performance against mid table Seaham.

On a very cold afternoon the away side started the brightest with Coleman and Shields going close while at the other end captain Grant Davidson made a superb last ditch tackle to deny the home striker breaking through on Stuart Dixon's goal. Brandon Robertson got brought down 20 yards out in the 23rd minute and Martyn Coleman stepped up to rifle a right footed shot into the bottom corner of the net. Shaun Gardner went close just before the break but the home keeper saved well. Seaham were expected to come out after the break and really put Penrith under pressure but it was the complete opposite as Kyle May's side continued to play fast flowing football and Main and Moynan in the middle were winning the ball in the middle of the park. Connor Shields blazed over after being delicately set up by Gardner and then Coleman thundered a shot against the post as the Blues were aiming to double their lead. Shields then shot over from 8 yards out when in space in the box. Coleman then got a cross into the area but the ball struck the hand of a Seaham defender, penalty awarded. Coleman stepped up to calmly stroke the ball home to give the scoreline a more realistic look. Penrith continued to dominate with the home side creating very little as Penrith’s defence were winning everything and Gardner, Shields and Robertson tirelessly running for every ball. That's 10 points from the last 4 games as the Bonny Blues climbed 8 points clear of the drop zone. Coleman and Shields smash the Roofers By Karl Collinson It was another dominant display from the Bonny Blues as they put more distance between themselves and their opponents in Northern League Division 1. Penrith were straight out of the traps with playing fast attacking football with Gardner and Coleman having early shots deflected narrowly wide. The home side lost their talisman, John Campbell, inside the first 5 minutes as he picked up an ankle injury but that seemed to kick them into life as they picked up some possession but were finding the Penrith defence in defiant mood. Martyn Coleman latched onto a delicate through ball on 20 minutes but was hacked down by the onrushing Jarrow goalkeeper right on the edge of the box. To the visiting supporters dismay only a yellow card was shown. Coleman stepped up and whizzed the free kick towards goal but it was straight at their keeper. Penrith continued to win the 50/50s with both Main and Moynan continuing their superb recent form. The home side were getting blocks and last ditch tackles in to keep the score line goalless until the final minute of the half when Connor Shields won the ball back and slipped it to Coleman who took it past the outside of his defender and rifled an unstoppable shot into the far corner of the net. HT 0.1 It was a similar pattern after the break with Penrith looking dangerous with every attack. Brad Hayton received the ball on the right hand side of the area and slid a delightful pass into Coleman on the edge of the box, he struck a glorious right foot shot first time into the bottom left corner to give their keeper no chance. Jarrow kept competing but their lack of recent matches was showing as Gardner went close and Main had a goal bound shot blocked. Connor Shields got his reward for his tireless running when he looped in a header over the Jarrow keeper to round off a fine team display. The home side forced a couple of corners as Penrith eased off the pressure but Stu Dixon was in top form as he tidied up any loose balls. Excellent display from the Bonny Blues as they picked up another well-deserved 3 Northern League points.

Morecambe Res 0 – 6 Penrith AFC Ladies Penrith finally returned to action after a 6 week break enforced by first the weather and then the festive break. Not surprisingly Penrith were slow to get going and their passing play was uncharacteristically scrappy. After a fairly even first half Penrith were somewhat fortunate to find themselves 0-2 up at the break with well taken goals from Nat Broad and Sarah Smith. Into the 2nd half Penrith upped the tempo of the game while Morecambes early confidence seemed to fade away. In the end Penrith cruised to a comfortable victory with further goals from Broad, S.Smith, Heather Fawkes and a back post header from youngster Livvy Johnston. Penrith welcome Bolton Wanderers Res to Frenchfields tomorrow.

Page 22 FT KO 3-2 Academy Disappointing not to get a share of the points today away at Kirkoswald but individual errors and some poor decision making in possession probably cost us. We found ourselves 2-0 down after 20 minutes with really poor goals to concede. However we got ourselves back into the game with a goal from Taryn Reay who finished from close range after the KO’s keeper could only parry Away a Greg Hall shot. 2-1. We dominated for the remainder of the 1st half creating plenty of chances but we were unable to convert them. 2nd half KO took the game to us and we struggled for a period and conceded from a set piece which again was a free header at the near post which was disappointing. However, these lads are resilient and got another goal back from great work by Greg Hall who put a lovely ball into the box and MOM Kieron Hodgson finished well. We pushed and pushed until the end but couldn’t find an equaliser. It finished 3-2 to the home side. Many thanks to Mark Slee who was Gaffer today. Well organised and lads worked hard. We are also looking to bolster the squad and are looking at a couple of players at the moment. We should secure their signatures in the next couple of weeks.
