Wishing a warm welcome to our visitors, Sunderland RCA and to all those who have made the journey to the Frenchfield Park this evening.
Welcome to Frenchfield
In the reports that follow, a few reflect on the last match as a very close match. Tonight we will probably have the strongest team on the pitch that we have had all season. It was touch and go with the pitch having two inspections at 10am and 2pm, but here we are. The emphasis is on getting out there, getting the job and putting the pressure on those below us and above us. Since our last look at the table, Guisborough Town have been deducted three points for fielding an ineligible player, leaving the Priorymen just one place above relegation, seven points ahead of Jarrow Roofing - who have three games in hand over Town. The Bonny Blues are currently 4th in the Northern League form table as we start today. If results go our way tonight, we could be climbing to 14th place, which 3 months ago was a dream. Come on you Bonny Blues! Lee Programme Editor leepenrithafc@gmail.com

I’ve just come off the phone with Kyle and we’ve discussed the West Auckland game as well as tonight’s line up. Kyle’s made a couple of changes to the side. We have Mally Holliday returning along with Jordon Lawson and Sam Bell and finally we knew he was coming, but he is back tonight, Tyler Bowman. Kyle described the changes and he also commented on his disappointment, as he felt he had let everyone down with the double yellow in the Auckland game. He was gutted for the lads as he felt the game was turning when we drew level and when he came off, it didn’t really come right. He added; ‘the lads really worked hard against a good team and they deserve to get something out of it and maybe three points could have well been achieved as they did do so well’. On another positive, tonight for the first time Kyle will have a different perspective on the game from the dugout and not the pitch. Tonight, Kyle explained, we have the strongest team out we have fielded this season. Outside of the top six, all sides are very beatable and he is looking forward to seeing for the first time a full strength side, which over the winter has got stronger and stronger, developing in every match. Points are important tonight and the pressure will then be on the others when the team has a rest on Saturday with no fixture to play.

Billys Blog Although we suffered a home defeat against West Auckland Im sure our supporters can see a massive resurgence in the teams organisation and fitness which augurs well for the remainder of the season. Attending the West Auckland game was one of my best signings in Laurie Coulthard ,Laurie captained us when we had our best ever run in the FA cup reaching the 2cnd round before going out away to Doncaster Rovers, hailing from Annan ,he was one of several players from Annan who over the years played for the club ,others who come to mind are George [Bomber] Allison and Willie Smith ,both gifted players who were proud to represent the club who to this day I retain a great friendship . When you reach my advanced years the memories I hold on representing the club at all levels make one realise what a great little club it is. Respect for the club is vital. Good to see in the last programme the article on Ron Jones, his son Mark was a loyal servant as a player, never blessed with pace but made up for that with a very astute football brain, A consistent performer and a Managers dream

Club history Sunderland RCA FC started life as Ryhope Youth Club. Its first season was in the Seaham and District League in 1963. The first game was against Seaham UDC at the Seaham CW ground, now home to Seaham Red Star, and it was a 3 - 3 draw. The first seeds had been sown three years earlier, in 1960, when the Ryhope Youth Club Centre opened in the Welfare Hall. In 1965 the club moved to the Colliery Welfare ground and in 1971 changed its name to Ryhope Community Association. Competing in the Seaham, then Houghton and District Leagues, the club enjoyed success with eight cup wins and four league titles. Rejected by the Wearside League because a Ryhope team already played in it, the club folded after the 1975-75 season. Re-formed three years later, the club joined the Northern Alliance in 1978 and won the League Challenge Cup at St James Park in Newcastle, in only their third season. Ryhope CA were also league runners up that year, even though they were reduced to playing on a school field. After some persuasion, the ambitious club convinced the council to lease then some derelict land - Meadow Park was underway. Financial help was obtained from Sunderland and Tyne and Wear Councils and the Sports Council to build a football ground. The club members and community joined together to carry out the building work, resulting in the enclosed ground where football games are played and enjoyed today. In 1982 the club was a founder member of the Northern League Second Division, achieving promotion as runner up in the 1983-84 season. Despite a league placing of tenth the next season, survival proved difficult and the club was relegated in 1988. In 1999 a new era commenced with the amalgamation with Kennek Roker of the Wearside League to form Kennek Ryhope Community Association. The seasons from 2003 onwards were tough, but for the season 2006-07, the club joined forces with Springboard Sunderland and a new era as Sunderland RCA FC began. Progress continues to be made both on and off the pitch and after finishing fourth in the previous two seasons Sunderland RCA FC were promoted as runners-up to Stokesley FC in season 2009-10 - a great achievement. Our Photo Ben France first season back in Division 1 started badly, but we picked ourselves up, had a purple patch and finished the season in 13th place.
Progress continued in the following season when we achieved our highest finish in the league (4th) under the management of Neil Hixon. The following season saw us almost relegated and we only retained first division status after a vote at the AGM went in our favour. The introduction of Martin Swales as manager brought a renewed belief to the club and the 2015 - 16 season saw a great FA Vase run where we reached the 5th round proper before being beaten by Bristol Manor Farm. This was followed by a similar run in the 2016-17 season, exiting in the 5th round against Newport Pagnell. Acknowledgement The club is very grateful to Joe Dixon for providing information about the early years of Sunderland RCA. Joe played for what was then Ryhope Youth Club and subsequently Ryhope Community Association from its first match in 1963 through to the 1978-79 season. Joe has turned from goal scorer to historian and a wealth of detail can be found on his web site – http://www.joedixon9.co.uk – about Joe’s playing days with RCA and other Sunderland and east Durham clubs. Stephen Callen – Winger Now in his fourth season with RCA, where he was joint highest goal scorer last season with 22 goals in all competitions. Stephen is a pacy player who is equally at home on either wing or played up front as a striker. Strong and powerful, he has great touch and control on the ball and possesses a terrific shot which will see him produce his fair share of goal scoring opportunities. James Cassidy – Winger No in his second season with the club after signing from Washington. He is a pacy winger who is equally comfortable on either wing. He is another who likes to attack defenders and creates goal scoring chances for his team mates. Michael Charlton - Midfielder, Winger Also in his fourth season at the club. He is well liked by the fans because he makes things happen on the pitch. He is a fast tricky winger who likes to run at defenders. Very direct in his play he also possesses the ability to cross the ball at pace into the danger area. 100% energy enables him to help out in defence as well. Voted committee player of the season last season. Clayton Davis - Midfielder, Winger Also his fourth season at the club. He is an exciting, speedy winger / defender who loves to take on defenders. Clayton is also a great crosser of the ball and chips in with the odd goal. He is one of those rare breed of players who always has a smile on his face. Previous clubs include Washington, Hebburn and Ryhope CW. Jonathan Davis – Midfielder Now in his second season with RCA after signing from Shildon. A naturally gifted midfielder he possesses a vast repertoire of passes, is good in the tackle and is powerful in the air. He has played extensively in the Northern League and higher - his former clubs include Hebburn, RCW, Durham, Darlington and Shildon. Dylan Elliott – Midfielder joined RCA after finishing last season at Easington Colliery. He was at Sunderland AFC from the age of 8 to 15, before joining Hartlepool United on a scholarship from the age of 16 to 19. Dylan has also had Northern League experience, spending two months at Bishop Auckland, and is already looking like an excellent signing for RCA. Keith Finch – Goalkeeper signed from West Auckland and brings a wealth of goalkeeping experience to RCA. Keith is a vocal goalkeeper who is always looking to marshal the players in front of him. Craig Hodgson - Central defender, Midfielder is now into his second season at RCA having previously played for Dunston UTS and Bishop Auckland. He can play as a central defender or in the centre of midfield and he is equally effective in either role. He reads the game well, is good in the air, loves a tackle and has the vision to pick out attacking passes quickly. Adam McGuinness – Defender in his second season since signing from Washington. "Addsy" returns to SRCA after a couple of seasons at Washington and brings with him a wealth of experience at this level. A natural left footer, he is able to play anywhere in
Neal Bussey - Goalkeeper Neal has signed from local football after being on Martin's wanted list for some time. He is a tall keeper who commands his area well, is a great shot stopper and has good distribution skills, he is always looking to turn defence into attack and will be a terrific asset to the team. Reece Noble - Defender, Midfielder now in his third season with RCA after a brief spell at Washington last season. He is capable of turning defence into attack with his range of passing and rarely misplaces a ball. He also has the ability to take control of a game and always looks composed. He was at Sunderland Academy from 2011 to 2013 before joining Gateshead after his release. Nathan O'Neill – Forward signed from neighbours Ryhope Colliery Welfare. Tall and good in the air, Nathan is capable of scoring all kinds of goals, from two yard tap-ins to 25 yard screamers. Luke Page - Midfielder signed for RCA after being at Easington Colliery last season. Luke is a strong tackling central midfielder who can quickly turn defence into attack. Greg Swansbury - Central defender is in his second season with RCA since signing from Washington and now captains the side. At 6'4", Greg is a powerful, imposing, no nonsense, old school central defender. As expected, he is good in the air but he is also deceptively good on the ground with great awareness of situations as they develop. Voted players' player of the season last season. Ross McNab - Full Back is in his second season with the club after returning from Billingham Synthonia. A left sided player Ross, has developed into a very good full back who is equally at home playing in the centre of defence. Defensively he is very competent, loves to get forward in support of his midfield and has a great range of passing. Injury free he is a great asset to the squad. Martin Swales – Manager has a wealth of Northern League experience both as a player and as a manager. He managed the very successful Ryhope Colliery Welfare team who in Season 2010-11 won all four competitions in the Wearside League. Repeating the feat the following year and also clinching promotion for RCW to the Northern League Division 2. He has also managed Bishop Auckland for a short time last season. He is passionate about his football especially in the local area and instills a sense of belief in his players. Steven Stewart - Assistant Manager Martin Swales appointed Steven Stewart as his assistant this season. Steven is no stranger to Meadow Park and has extensive Northern League experience as a player, having also played for Washington, Bedlington, Nissan, Durham, Chester-le-Street, Benfield and Blyth Spartans. He is now looking to move into the management side and sees SRCA as the ideal place to start, he is familiar with the set up off the pitch and his vast experience and knowledge of players at this level will be an invaluable asset to Martin. Gary Errington - Assistant Manager "Gee" returned to the club that he played at for a number of seasons. He was also a member of the very successful Easington CW FC team which reached the first round proper of the FA Cup. A speedy winger with tricky feet and a great cross. (If only he was five years younger - Ha Ha). Has been assistant to Swaz for a number of years now and complements the manager's playing style with his own flair. Rarely see him without a smile on his face. Colin Larkin - Coach, Forward Now into his fourth season with RCA, Colin was last season's joint highest goal scorer with 22 goals in all competitions. He is the epitome of a professional, and his influence is seen throughout the team. Colin's previous clubs include West Auckland, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Kidderminster Harriers (loan), Alfreton Town, Chesterfield, Northampton, Hartlepool, Lincoln City, Harrogate Town and Gateshead. He leads by example on and off the pitch and his enthusiasm for the game is infectious and the younger players in the squad will continue to learn from Colin. Voted fans' player of the season last season. Carl Morris - Coach, Goalkeeper After a couple of seasons playing in goal for us, Carl has returned to RCA as goalkeeping coach. With a heart as big as his build and considerable Northern League experience, Carl is a tremendous asset to the club.

Morecambe Res 0 – 6 Penrith AFC Ladies Penrith finally returned to action after a 6 week break enforced by first the weather and then the festive break. Not surprisingly Penrith were slow to get going and their passing play was uncharacteristically scrappy. After a fairly even first half Penrith were somewhat fortunate to find themselves 0-2 up at the break with well taken goals from Nat Broad and Sarah Smith. Into the 2nd half Penrith upped the tempo of the game while Morecambes early confidence seemed to fade away. In the end Penrith cruised to a comfortable victory with further goals from Broad, S.Smith, Heather Fawkes and a back post header from youngster Livvy Johnston. Penrith welcome Bolton Wanderers Res to Frenchfields tomorrow.

Penrith Players of the Future
Page 22 FT KO 3-2 Academy Disappointing not to get a share of the points today away at Kirkoswald but individual errors and some poor decision making in possession probably cost us. We found ourselves 2-0 down after 20 minutes with really poor goals to concede. However we got ourselves back into the game with a goal from Taryn Reay who finished from close range after the KO’s keeper could only parry Away a Greg Hall shot. 2-1. We dominated for the remainder of the 1st half creating plenty of chances but we were unable to convert them. 2nd half KO took the game to us and we struggled for a period and conceded from a set piece which again was a free header at the near post which was disappointing. However, these lads are resilient and got another goal back from great work by Greg Hall who put a lovely ball into the box and MOM Kieron Hodgson finished well. We pushed and pushed until the end but couldn’t find an equaliser. It finished 3-2 to the home side. Many thanks to Mark Slee who was Gaffer today. Well organised and lads worked hard. We are also looking to bolster the squad and are looking at a couple of players at the moment. We should secure their signatures in the next couple of weeks. Today the Academy has a Junior Cup quarter final clash away to Dent FC. Matt Rogers - Academy Manager
