Welcome to Frenchfield

Jarrow Roofing striker Dennis Knight scored four, but he still finished on the losing side of whom Marc Nash was in charge for the first time.
A warm welcome to our visitors, Marske United, their players, officials and all those travelling here on what I’ll predict when I am writing, after the minus 3-4 degrees this morning, could be quite a chilly one tonight. For the first time this season, I have put results to date with the remaining fixtures in the programme on page 26. Well I needed to fill some spaces. With all matches being cancelled right across all sections of the club, I have, however, researched and dug out what are the most recent matches that I could find. I’ve mentioned it a few times before but our Penrith AFC ladies are flying at the moment. If you are a real Bonny Blues addict, you should, if you haven’t already, take yourself to a match. On 14 matches with a few below chasing, they have been on top of the North West Women’s Regional League for a while. Currently on 36 points, with Cammell Laird 1907 Ladies in second after 10 matches with 26 points. Whilst we’ll look at the table and start doing the sums, some teams in this division have only played seven. It’s that aged old debate when you are ahead, generally you’re glad to have the points in the bag and many coaches and managers will be eyes front in these circumstances. When I was a player and a coach, it was always to be focused on what’s ahead of you because you can’t change what is behind you. Whilst a line might be spun that last weekend Jarrow Roofing below us, 3rd from bottom after being 5 – 2 up against North Shields with 17 minutes to go, lost 6 - 5 to a goal scored in the 93rd minute. Is it faint, no it’s football!
Is it a last minute trend? Elsewhere in the Northern League 24th Feb, Newton Aycliffe lost for the first time in nine matches when they were beaten by a last minute goal at Ryhope CW on Saturday. Aycliffe hadn’t lost since they were beaten 2-0 by Dunston in mid-November, and they thought they’d salvaged a draw after coming back from 2-0 down at one point. James Ellis scored twice for Ryhope in the first 20 minutes, but Craig Hutchinson hit back with a pair by half time. However, Ellis completed his hat trick with just a minute left. With the final score 3 – 2 Newton Aycliffe are away to an unstoppable Stockton on Saturday they then have Jarrow Roofing at home. Heads up, eyes front and enjoy the game, Come on you Bonny Blues! The line has been down since my last conversation with Kyle, which was scheduled before the cancellations had settled in. After coming out of the 3 – 1 defeat at Shildon on 24th February, which seems longer ago than it was, on the other side of the thaw, we have now lost five league matches in a row, but Kyle has set a straight enough target. With 10 matches remaining, Kyle has set the minimum target of winning five out of the last ten. On page 26 are those crucial matches but based on the interviews and what we have seen since his arrival at the club, he’ll be working with the team to get points in every match and soon. Recently quoted in local press, Kyle said, “we are obviously on a bit of a bad run and we know what we need to do from now till the end of the season.” He also added when he had set out his target for the last ten league fixtures, “I wouldn’t set the lads a target if I didn’t think they could achieve it – definitely not!” There will be a couple of changes to the side tonight as Adam serves a threematch ban after being sent off in the Shildon Match. After clearing last week in order to keep the training schedule, with Martyn Coleman going off injured in the Shildon match, we may see Connor Shields starting. This will be announced shortly. We start 4th from bottom today and it’s wining that is going to move us in the direction that we need to be heading.

Football in the village of Marske-by-the-Sea can be dated back as far as the early 1880’s when a team called simply Marske competed in ‘ordinary’ matches under association rules. The club as it is known today was founded in 1956, when members of Marske Cricket Club decided to form a team. Local businessman Raymond Jarvis agreed to act as club chairman, a committee was put in place and a field on Jack Little’s farm was temporarily secured to use on which to play. For over 50 years Marske United made steady progress through the ranks of nonleague football in the north-east as the village side became a force to be reckoned with in amateur football. The club played in the Cleveland League and South Bank League before finally gaining entry to the Teesside League at the sixth attempt in 1976, and by the early 1980’s had grown into a major force in the league. Marske won two titles as well as a number of cup competitions during their time in the Teesside League, the second of their titles gaining them promotion to the Wearside League in 1985 and over the next decade the silverware flooded in. United won one championship, were runners-up three times and won so many cups that it became obvious the club was ready to progress again. In fact, the 1995/96 season saw Marske United achieve a remarkable clean sweep of Wear side League silverware winning the league title, League Cup, Shipowners Cup and the Monkwearmouth Cup, having also won North Riding Senior Cup for the first time the year before. The comparative big time followed with promotion to the Northern League in 1998 after finally winning the battle with the local council over permission to install floodlights at Mount Pleasant. With player-manager Charlie Bell at the helm, the club carried on where they left off, and gained promotion from Division Two at the very first attempt, finishing third behind West Auckland and Chester-le-Street. A creditable 12th place finish in their first season in Division One was followed in 1999/2000 with an impressive fourth place finish. The 2000/01 season really put Marske on the map, reaching the quarter-finals of the FA Vase before losing to Bedlington Terriers in a replay, losing in the final of the Northern League Challenge Cup and finishing third in the league .The following season started badly with Charlie Bell and his backroom staff leaving the club following a poor start due to the loss of some of the club’s best players. Experienced Northern League manager Mike Hodgson and assistant Peter Bell took over and engineered a revival in fortunes and a charge up the league to finish fourth, despite more players were being lured away on better deals. 2002/03 season saw Peter Bell take over as manager with Dave Tate as his assistant and the club finished 16th. Sadly, despite a new-look team, fortunes didn’t improve the following season and the club was relegated for the first and only time in its history.
After several unsuccessful years in Division Two, former Northallerton pair Paul Burton and Mark Riley were appointed and the acquisition of some experienced Northern League players resulted in the 2008/09 season being the most successful for many years. After a slow start, a long unbeaten run left Marske in contention for promotion and a brilliant run in the FA Vase took the club on a journey all over the country, which saw the team drawn away in all but one of the eight games played before eventually losing to Glossop North End in the quarterfinal. However this success in the cup resulted in a backlog of league games and with the games coming thick and fast during March and April the club lost some crucial midweek away games to finish the season in fifth place. 2009/10 proved to be almost exactly the same, finishing fourth after being in a promotion place for most of the season. A last 16 Vase run was ended in a replay defeat against Brighton based Whitehawk, and again the league backlog proved to be too much to cope with. However the 2010/11 season proved the old adage of third time lucky when, despite another disappointing start, the club finally clinched promotion by finishing in third place after putting together a fantastic run of only one defeat in twenty five games and promotion was clinched with a game to spare after a 2-0 away win at Gillford Park in April 2011. Back in the first division, the 2011/12 season proved to be a difficult one against the stronger sides, but the club retained its status by finishing 18th, after which Paul Burton stepped down. After a short and unsuccessful spell with Craig Gibbin and ex-pro Roy Hunter in charge. the experienced ex-Stokesley management team of Ted Watts and Jon Boswell were appointedAlthough the standard of football improved, consistency was an issue, and the club finished 19th, whilst also reaching the North Riding Senior Cup final, losing 3-0 to Pickering Town. Watts made a glut of high profile signings over the summer of 2013, and the team got off to a flying start, going on an 18 match unbeaten run to briefly top the Northern League table as well as reaching the final qualifying round of the FA Cup, eventually losing 6-2 at Conference side Southport, missing out on a First Round Proper trip to League One leaders Leyton Orient. A mid-season slump followed, which saw the side flirting with a relegation battle, but a late turnaround in fortunes saw the club win its first piece of silverware for 16 years by beating Whitley Bay 2-1 at Newcastle United’s St James’ Park to lift the Brooks Mileson Memorial Northern League Cup. However, this wasn’t enough for Watts to keep hold of his job, and just six days after the dramatic extra time cup final win he was removed from his post and shortly afterwards replaced by former Billingham Town manager Carl Jarrett. Jarrett’s side confounded all expectations in 2014/15, losing just six league games all season and scoring 118 goals as they won the league for the first time, finishing a point ahead of Shildon after an amazing six-team title race. The club defended the title with great pride the following season, finishing as runners-up to Shildon in both the league and the League Cup, the latter after the final went to penalties. For the 2016/17 season, former professional Ian Clark joined the coaching staff alongside Jarrett and the team finished in the top 5 for the third successive season.

Carl Jarrett - Manager
Meet the visitors
Carl started out in management as assistant manager to Conrad Hillerby at Norton & Stockton Ancients, helping them to promotion to Division 1 of the Northern League before becoming manager at Billingham Town where he spent 3 seasons keeping them in Division 1 with limited resources. Carl became manager of Marske United in 2014, winning the Northern League title in his first season and finishing in 2nd place the following season, making him the most successful manager in Marske United's history. Nicky Ward – Assistant Manager Wardy was a popular Marske player in his day helping the club move up the pyramid before moving onto other clubs, eventually retiring and going into management. After spending time at Redcar and Stokesley, he joined the management team last season as Assistant to Carl. Ian Clark – First Team Coach Ian is a vastly experienced former Football League player, having played nearly 300 games for Doncaster Rovers, Hartlepool United and Darlington over a 10 year period. Ian joined Marske United as a coach in September 2016. Robert Dean – Goalkeeper Rated amongst the league’s best keepers, Deano spent two years at Spennymoor, won the FA Vase at Wembley and the league and made some crucial saves as part of Marske’s title-winning team. Played every minute of last season. Lewis McDonald – Goalkeeper Highly-rated young keeper brought in to provide cover for Robert Dean and likely to see some playing time this season. Lee Brockbank – Defence Former Teesside League player who seamlessly made the jump to Northern League to become an essential part of the team. Became club captain in 2016 and was part of the title and cup winning sides. Matthew Bell – Defence Experienced full-back signed from West Auckland who was a regular in the side during his first season at the club.
J Liam O’Sullivan – Defence Left-back who was part of Marske’s title-winning team of 2014/15. Quality defender who also likes to get forward. Re-joined the club in February after a spell at Billingham Synthonia. Josh Rowbotham – Defence A fantastic signing for the club, having been part of Billingham Synthonia’s promotion-winning side. Regarded as one of the best young defenders in the league. Leon Carling – Defence Back at the club for a second spell, Leon has bags of experience, is dominant in the air and having captained several teams, brings important leadership skills. Matthew Bell Position - Defender Belly is a new face to the G.E.R this season after signing from West Auckland. An attacking full back with great delivery and good on the ball, he has already proven himself to be another great addition to the squad. Glen Butterworth – Midfield Box-to-box midfielder with a knack for scoring spectacular goals. Played a crucial role in the League Cup and Northern League triumphs and was last season’s Player of the Year. Peter Bulmer – Midfield Highly regarded player who joined from Guisborough Town in September. Can play anywhere across the midfield and has a keen eye for goal. Craig Gott – Midfield Originally signed from Darlington in September 2013, Gotty became a crucial part of the side, captaining Marske to the League Cup in 2014 and then the Northern League title in 2015, sweeping the board at the end-of-season awards. Joined Spennymoor in January 2016 before returning last season. Chay Liddle – Midfield A fantastic, intelligent footballer who is great on the ball. Spent several season playing two levels higher with Whitby Town. Curtis Round – Midfield Winger/forward who joined from Guisborough last season and got better and better as he settled into the team. Mikey Roberts – Forward Prolific goalscorer signed from Whitby Town in September 2017. Blessed with bags of pace and tremendous finishing capabilities, his previous clubs include Guisborough and Spennymoor Town.
Back to Southend Road
Page 122
The idea, some 20 programmes ago, was to set this, a new idea based on a bunch of old stuff about the club. The feature back to Southend Road got off to an eventual start but unfortunately with the articles coming in originally from the Cumberland Westmorland Herald, when this stopped in November/December, the only way forward was to research and unfortunately back in those early days, they didn’t have computers and rarely were there many photos. I was very fortunate, as I have mentioned before, to be passed a green recycling bag that was full of bits of the club’s history and some old programmes. But it’s a small bag in the light of what I need to cover the history of almost 125 years (in 2019). This is where we go next. Previously before moving to Penrith, I rallied around and met probably 100 or more ex-players and officials; some in their nineties. It started off as a social; the Old Boys Club as they ranged from around 40 upwards. In the new 2018 - 19 season, it is something I hope we can do here at Penrith AFC. When you look at modern presentations of the history on a website, it is a very small part on a website. In my experience, once the ball started rolling, we not only had an introduction of a ‘Vets’ team but we had regular sponsor matches which the ‘Vets’ attended. In between all this, the history of the club was rediscovered, from original leather laced footballs and leather boots with wooden studs, through to programmes from this Town’s history, going back to the 50s when it played Chelsea in a friendly just after it had won the first Division title to matches with Fulham, Crystal Palace and Brighton. These matches were centred around a pre-season charity match that raised money for the local hospital. The trophy was a huge silver Rose Bowl but since the late nineties, it had gone missing never to be found. It was I was told a beautiful thing. Many of the ‘Vets’ from those days still alive, they knew the matches like they were yesterday. With them and old programmes, news clippings and a scrap book that was found in the local hospital’s Sir Archibald McIndoe museum. Well, being a Brighton supporter, I discovered that the last match the home team had lost was against Crystal Palace. The town team I was with was in a place called East Grinstead, which is half way between Selhurst Park, South East London and in those days, the
‘Goldstone’ ground Brighton so it was a town of mixed football views, however, with a black and white photo in hand I showed to some of my Palace friends, what a confession to make!
Billy’s Blog
One of them recognised the Rose Bowl picture, because as a lad in the 80’s, he used to watch the matches. Two weeks later he sent me a picture of it in colour. It was in the Selhurst Park Trophy Cabinet in the hospitality area! I spoke to the CEO at the time. It was as if he had actually had the keys to the wall of silver fame. He was interested to know how I knew it was there. It wasn’t as simple as sending him a photo of the bowl. He wanted some proof, so I asked him nicely to actually have a look at the Bowl. Of course there couldn’t have been many Silver Rose Bowls in that cabinet with Chelsea, Brighton, Crystal Palace and East Grinstead Town on them. Penrith have played some huge clubs. In the bag I mention replies to fixtures from clubs like Manchester City. As we prepare now for the 125 year celebration of our club, I need at least 100 names of 100 ex-players or staff members to get started on this mammoth task of filling in a lot of gaps. You may see a few old photos moving around as I rescan and recolour them. If you have any old programmes, these can be scanned and if needs be we can reprint for collectors and families. I’ll need old shirts; anything that is a piece of our past, as we’ll be working towards a big celebrations of time past shared in our town with our club and all those generations involved with it. A note to all Penrith ‘Vets’ - please collect a form from the bar to complete some details so I can make contact with you or a colleague please.
I know Kyle May has been a little disappointed with results of late, we have had a run against the top teams in the League with many young inexperienced players in his squad and perhaps his experienced players not being at there best? We are under no illusions as to the challenge ahead and with a favourable run in to complete the season it is vital we as a club are up for the battle to maintain our cherished standard of football. There is no doubt many changes that are taking place instigated by the FA at grass roots level, I sometimes wonder if those in high places have the experience needed to understand the challenge faced by the vast majority of clubs at our level. It has been suggested that we as a club may be relocated to the north west of the country. The strength of non-league football in the north east is well known and once again this year a Northern League club will be in the Final of the FA Vase. However, as a club, the sooner we know the answer as to relocation, we can face up to the future challenge of making our club sustainable. My long term involvement in the club has brought me in to the company of many characters. My respect for the club is built on many of these people. When I first joined the club as a player after leaving Darlington in 1966 I was signed by Walter Brogden, a proper and reliable person who showed everyone respect and in return gained respect .Tommy Pearson was Chairman a man I had known from my days working with Alan Ashman when he was Penriths Manager and I was a young apprentice pro at Carlisle Utd. Genuine gentlemen who play a big part in this clubs rich history Thankyou Gentlemen

03/03/2018 A SATURDAY OFF Bored by the lack of football? You're not the only one. You have a kindred spirit in Pete Sixsmith: The weather hasn’t been great in the Land of the Three Rivers this week. The “Beast from the East” (surely a reference to Chris Sutton) blew in long and hard and dumped a lot of snow on Sixsmith Towers on Tuesday and Wednesday. After a visit to the podiatrist in Crook on Tuesday, I only set foot over the doorstep to deliver the newspapers until Friday afternoon, when I managed to prise a loaf of bread out of the hands of an ancient and toothless crone outside the bakers. Cabin fever was setting in. Football was off on Tuesday and Wednesday which meant that I could not experience the Durham Challenge Cup semi-final between Consett and Shildon and a Northern League Second Division clash between Darlington Railway Athletic and Hebburn. I had to watch television and sit through a deadly dull bird derby game between Swans and Owls and then witness the wonderful VAR controversy at Wembley where referee Paul Tierney looked like a supply teacher waiting for the Head of Behaviour to arrive to discipline his class, as the video referee took an age to make a decision. I have seen the future and it’s awful. I had decided against spending £100 on a trip to Millwall (the same applies next week at QPR) and quite looked forward to picking out a game that I might actually enjoy. By Wednesday morning, that hope was knocked well and truly on the head as the entire region was covered in the white stuff and it was fairly clear that the weekend would be a no-football zone. By Friday, the Northern League programme had gone but Spennymoor Town were hopeful that their game against Leamington would go ahead. Covers had been borrowed from Hartlepool and Darlington, Spennymoor fans had volunteered in their droves to clear the snow and the forecast was for an improvement. Alas, the National League decided that it was not safe for Leamington to travel so that one went….. There were games on at Carlisle (impossible to get there as all east west routes were closed) and Scunthorpe (I’ll save that one for next season) so it was a Saturday without top class sport – although some would say that any Saturday watching Sunderland falls into that category. After a long wait for the papers to arrive (3 hours late due to the M62 being closed), I made a solid breakfast and waited for the team news at 2.00p.m. I read the papers, dozed in a chair, instinctively got my coat out at 1.00 and then sat down again. I was confused. I usually went out at this time. Why was I sat in the kitchen? It just didn’t seem right.
The last time I missed watching a game (football or rugby league) on a Saturday was the 5th January 2013 when I gave up a trip to Bolton for an FA Cup tie in order to attend my Aunt’s 90th birthday party in Alcester in Warwickshire. I tried to sneak off to Redditch United v Harrogate Town but was forbidden by my cousins who chained me to the tea table and took my phone off me so I had to wait to hear about Craig Gardner’s late equaliser. We lost the replay 2-0; Martin O’Neill was on borrowed time after that. So, I read the paper -the sport, the news, the comment, the magazine, the financial pages, the food section, even the travel bit that shows you where the best and most remote beaches are. Alas, Filey was not mentioned.
Hearth & Home (Cumbria) Ltd
Same stove - different settings
BBC Newcastle was tuned in to at 2.00. The dulcet tones of Nick Barnes and the argumentative nature of Gary Its funny how different a stove can look in Bennett were a welcome sound. The team was different settings, which one is your choice? interesting. Steele in goal, both wingers starting, Ejaria was back in the line-up. Nick suggested that Chelsea might have persuaded the FA to suspend Jake ClarkeSalter’s suspension so he could play…..those two jolly japesters seem to believe that The Pensioners have insisted that JC-S has to play in every game or else. So, I sat and listened. When I am watching another game, I tune in (very) intermittently and only get a whiff of the chemistry between B and B. On the rare occasions I listen to a whole game they come across well and as someone who was brought up on John Cairns in the 70’s, it is a huge improvement. The game went as expected. A decent start, a good goal from Oviedo but an inability to push on and finish the Lions off. The two wingers did not really impose themselves, Fletcher was left isolated and did little and we never quite controlled the midfield. It got worse in the second half as Millwall took control of the game and there was an inevitability about the equaliser. By the 80th minute I was pacing the living room. By the 81st I switched the radio off and stood in the kitchen gazing at the snow and not daring to press the on switch. I finally looked at the BBC Sport Website at 4.55 and scrolled down very, very carefully , taking some pleasure in Bolton and Birmingham losing but dreading a 2 next to Millwall, while desperately hoping to see the same number against our name. It wasn’t a bad result if we were in the upper echelons of the league but it was a poor one for the team who were (and who remained) 24th. The games are running out and we need to win the next two. I shall be at the Villa game but not at Loftus Road. I may get a game in elsewhere. I couldn’t take another Saturday afternoon in the house.

Penrith Ladies and Girls Report
Page 18
On Sunday 25th Feb Penrith AFC Ladies were meant to play Warrington Wolverines in the Quarter final of the League Plate. Katherine Savage describes this one to be as tough as it one was in an entertaining affair when the teams met in the preseason period and played out a 4-4 draw. The Penrith AFC Development team were due to play Barrow Celtic Ladies in the Lancashire League. At time of print these fixtures have not been rescheduled Penrith AFC Ladies 8 – 1 Penrith AFC Development
Report by Katherine Savage
Somewhat frustratingly, Penrith AFC Ladies drew the clubs Development team in the quarter final of this seasons Cumberland County Cup The 8-1 final score certainly doesn’t tell the whole story as it was the young Development team who impressed in the first half and were very unlucky to find themselves 2-1 down at the break. The Ladies team opened the scoring in only the 3rd minute with a debut goal from Clare Almond. The Development team grew in confidence as their compact formation frustrated the Ladies team. The Development team were also looking threatening in attack and it was no surprise when they equalised through Becca Alderson in the 28th minute. The Ladies regained the lead in the 38th minute when 16 year old Abbie Frizzle got on the end of a well worked corner routine and directed the ball into the net. HT 2-1 The Ladies scored early in the 2nd half to settle nerves and their greater experience and fitness eventually proved decisive with an 8-1 final score. So its Penrith AFC Ladies who progress to the Semi finals of the County Cup however credit also goes to the Development team for a spirited performance. Ladies: Lawson, Nelson, Nutter, C.Smith, McCormick(Frizzle), Hopton, Johnston, Coulthard, Broad, Campbell, Almond Development: Tracey, D.Savage, I.Savage, Jackson, Scott, Norwood(Gray), Alderson, Noble(Coward), Buchanan, Glenndinning, Johnson(Place) In the Women’s County Cup Semi Final draw made last Friday. Penrith AFC Ladies are away to Workington Reds Ladies. This will be played on Sunday 18 March. In the other Semi Final Carlisle United Ladies are at home to Crown Laithes Ladies in the other Semi. The Women’s County Cup final is scheduled for Friday 11th May

Penrith Players of the Future
Page 20 It’s been a frustrating few weeks for the Academy after an excellent performance
winning 2-0 at home to Burneside who sit 3rd in the league. This was meant to set us up for a good run in to the end of the season only for our game to be called off against Ambleside Utd reserves on 17th Feb as they unfortunately folded due to lack of players and then there was the debacle of last Saturday. Obviously the weather is still icy cold but the pitches at Frenchfield were inspected early Saturday morning and were deemed not playable. Under normal circumstances this would have been acceptable but it was a beautiful sunny day and it was blatantly obvious that come 2.30pm they would have recovered. It was proven as I personally went to check and it was an ideal day for a game of football. Langwathby were our opponents who were obviously as frustrated as us and they did offer to switch the fixture to their place but by then I had notified the league, officials and players so yet again another weekend went by with no game. It’s very difficult to get any consistency when you get forced breaks between games and with an ever changing starting eleven it makes a settled side nigh on impossible. With all this said, we are looking forward to our rearranged fixture this Saturday against Penrith Saints but this depends on the extent of the “Beast from the East” which is another cold weather front with the threat of snow. I’m all for global warming if it gets the lads a game week in week out! On the Player front I was delighted to welcome Matty Read to the Academy after he offered to help us out from our first team and he really did help the lads out. Another addition is the one and only Kyle May (First Team Manager) who has also offered his services to develop the players when he can. I would also like to welcome Robert Stockdale who joins us from Keswick. Robert is a 16 year old who recently moved to the area and spent a considerable time with Plymouth Argyle academy so he’s one to keep an eye out for. Another to keep an eye on is Luke Hunter who has done tremendously well with us so far after rejoining the club from Carlisle Utd. I am also over the moon on the return to the club for Jake Burrow who’s first spell with us was very successful scoring for fun. Let’s hope he Picks up where he left off and lastly but certainly not least I am delighted to announce the return of Mikey Watson. Mikey is a superb keeper who left us a couple of seasons ago to join Queen of the South but contacted before Christmas to request to come back to which I said in an instant absolutely yes. We are currently in the process of the transfer and I hope to get him a few games before the end of the season. I will be looking for a strong finish to the season but with a settled side so let’s hope availability isn’t an issue and we can push on and with some strong under 16’s coming through who I’ve been impressed with the future looks very bright for the Academy, Reserves and hopefully the first team. Matt Rogers (Penrith Academy) (Penrith Academy)

LOCAL BUSINESS
Also available in Colour Did know Penrith Posters is now Penrith Print? Sometimes opportunities just come along. We see a shop leave the high street, well in this case it was King Street in 2014 and that shop for many years had been trading and serving the community through selling stationary an ink cartridges, but something else it did on two floors, with its metal winding stair case, was it made banners and posters and for someone who just wanted to step off the street and get some photocopying done, it was so convenient. The business changed hands. It rebranded and as part of its new brand, it moved out of the high street location, possibly as a saving. A lot of businesses do this and I’ve worked with a few. For Chris Murray, at that time, in order to set out on his dream to have his own business, he saw a gap in the market of opportunity. Chris had an idea that would fill a hole and the potential walk in trade that had existed for all those years was still there; he had to move fast.
Opportunity in business is sometimes born out of convenience or inconvenience and one late night he was sitting at home on his computer pondering this new career. He looks back and remembers, maybe it was that last glass of red wine that just nudged him with that extra push of courage, which meant he clicked the enter button when it said ‘please confirm your payment’ and Penrith Posters was created. Why Penrith Posters? Well what he had bought was a secondhand scanner printer and Chris, like many small business owners when they start out, was already working full time, so in the evening he was working on his new idea. The kitchen table became his desk, so he set off designing and making posters. It was a start, but it wasn’t on the high street. By 2015 it was in Friargate, two doors away from Eden FM Radio, who set up and switched on their new studio in May 2015. There was a natural link in marketing and the need for marketing materials.

The down side of Friargate on that side of road is there is no fibre broadband. Chris on moving to his premises got his phone line, but only had the basic broadband which meant loading digital images was not easy. He was balancing two jobs, working from his kitchen; working during the day time until early afternoon, then he would do evening shifts at Halfords and work the weekends there too. Eden FM shared the same trials with broadband loading music and even with the BT telephone exchange just separated by a wall and the car park of Eden FM. As Chris found it a year on after being at Friargate, the promises of it happening from BT simply weren’t delivered. To take his business to the next level, he took an enormous leap of faith. I’m pleased he did and many of you would have seen the support in the Eden Local and you
may have heard Penrith Posters advertise regularly on Eden FM? We have worked in securing contracts together and recommending each other and at the start of 2017, Chris secured the lease on 4 Market square, Penrith, right in the heart of the town. He changed his working week, increased his hours for his own business whilst still working evenings from 4.30pm and still working Saturdays and Sundays at Halfords. It’s not the final chapter, as I see this business just growing and growing, because Chris has such a great work ethic and dedication, which in February saw him finally take the plunge and put all of his working hours into his business. It was time to also promote that he doesn’t just do posters. He hasn’t since he stepped out of the kitchen. He does pretty much everything in print. Penrith Print today has moved far beyond just doing posters. They print a wide range and variety of stationary for businesses, local groups and personal use. They do menus, funeral memorial cards, moving house cards, general leaflets, business cards, signage and all types of banners. A specialist in short print runs, you can have 50 business cards or 5,000. They are a specialist in short run (often single) bespoke posters ranging in sizes from A4 to A0. They use the latest HP wide format machines which allow them to print up to 60” wide and 50 metres long.
