It was just after lunch time yesterday when I caught up with Kyle May to have brief chat on the Thursday night game and the plans for today. You would have noticed a change in the 4 – 4 - 2 in the Marske game as Kyle described: “We changed the shape of the line-up and for the first 25 minutes it worked really well. Overall, I think the lads did exceptionally well. The defence was solid. Marske moved the ball around well and they had more of the ball. We had a couple of early chances which we didn’t take and we paid for that as the game progressed. The first goal was a quality goal. Not many keepers could have stopped it. I don’t question Referees decisions, but with regards to the penalty, I think it was a tough call. Had we lost by one goal, it would have hurt a lot more as the lads deserved something out of the game. The pitch played really well. It’s probably the best in the league and it’s a credit to the lads behind the scenes who make this happen.” On today’s match Kyle added: “We’re going hard to make some changes today with Kelvin going off injured. We’ll need to think about some of the things we didn’t get right on Thursday. Importantly well need to keep the ball more……”

Team Northumbria Club History Founded in 1999 under the name Northumbria University F.C., the Club started its journey by joining the Northern Football Alliance Division Two. Over the following few years, the team progressed through the divisions culminating in becoming Northern Alliance Champions in 2005–06 gaining promotion to the Northern League Division 2 Following a number of years competing in Division 2, the 2011-12 season was one of huge significance as Team Northumbria became Champions and secured promotion to Division 1. In the same season, they lost 4-2 on penalties in the Northumberland Senior Cup final against Newcastle United reserves at St James Park, after drawing 4-4 after extra time. The club remained in Division 1 until 2013-14 when they were relegated back to Division 2. Unfortunately, this period also witnessed two back-to-back bottom of the league finishes in the BUCS Premier North University League with relegation only avoided through the play-off system. It was before the 2014/15 season that saw significant changes to the football programme at Northumbria University with a completely new staff team and a return to students taking up the vast majority of squad places. Whilst having a squad that predominately consists of young student players from across the UK and the wider world poses many challenges it is also what makes Team Northumbria unique in the Northern League. At Team Northumbria, the focus is on developing both the student and player, and achieving success on both counts. Team Northumbria will always seek their football success through the development of good technical players willing to express themselves in a positive environment. In 2014/15, this new approach to football was adopted and the players are now actively engaged in sessions across a broad range of areas. Whilst success was not achieved instantly, the 2014/15 season saw a 4th place league finish, missing promotion by just one point. In the BUCS Premier North League, the university improved with a 4th place finish. The 2015/16 season was another season of progress as although the university-based team missed out on promotion by one point, Team Northumbria finished off the season equalling the highest number of points previously achieved. All of the other indicators were positive and the team once again finished 4th in the BUCS League. Promotion back to Division 1 of the Northern League was finally achieved in the 2016/17 season where the team finished 2nd despite being top for the majority of the year. The team achieved 89 points from only 40 games instead of 42 as Norton & Stockton withdrew from the league half way through the season. In terms of points and statistics, it was the best season in Team Northumbria’s history.
In addition to promotion to Division 1, Team Northumbria finished a record 2nd place in the BUCS Premier North League and made it all the way to the BUCS National Championship final coming within 5 minutes of a famous victory only for two late goals from Cardiff denying Northumbria a win.

The 2016/17 season saw the squad play a total of 84 games in all competitions, by far the most of any team that play in Northumbria colours. Returning to Division 1 is no doubt going to be a massive challenge but one in which ‘the students’ have worked hard for and looking forward to.

Greg Purvis - Goalkeeper Another new recruit for the 2017/18 season. Previously with Sunderland Academy and will provide strong competition amongst the goalkeepers. Stefan Holden - Goalkeeper New recruit for this season; Stefan has a wealth of experience playing in the Northern League after a couple of seasons at Dunston. Standing at 6�5, we are hopeful Stefan will be keeping plenty of clean sheets. Liam McNamara (Captain) - Defender A product of the university football system, Liam has played a pivotal role in the recent successes of the football programme. A regular starter for both the university and Northern League with versatile skills and attributes. Angelos Eleftheriadis - Defender Arrived near the beginning of the 2016/17 campaign from Whitley Bay. A very talented Greek centre-back who is confident on the ball and not afraid to tackle. Nick Green - Defender The backbone to the TN defence, Nick has been a key player since joining the university back in 2012. An attacking fullback who is keen to take the ball forward and deliver a dangerous cross. Liviu Cristea - Defender Originally, from Romania, Liviu is a defensive full back who is full of energy and not afraid to make a tackle. Aidan Heywood - Defender A versatile defender willing to play in several positions on the pitch. A consistent performer last season providing vital goals where needed and helping the team to success. Matty Lowrie - Midfielder Athletic centre half who is not afraid to run the ball out from the back with a keen eye for an accurate pass. Previously, Matty was associated with Newcastle United academy. David Webster - Midfielder Signed for Team Northumbria this season after many years playing in Division 1. An experienced and solid midfielder who will provide leadership and structure to the squad. Kevin Carr - Midfielder Non-Student attacking midfielder who has been present for a number of years. Scored many goals in a Team Northumbria shirt and hoping to continue this form into the new season. Robbie Spence - Midfielder A regular in both the TN and Northern League team, Robbie is regarded as the engine of the midfield who often pops up for an important goal.
Ryan Redford - Midfielder Having recently returned from travelling Thailand, Ryan has resigned with Team Northumbria for another season. A regular starter with a creative presence when on the field.
Scott Gunn - Forward After signing with TN from Ashington near the beginning of last season, Scott featured regularly in the starting line-up creating and scoring many goals.
Elliot Jones - Midfielder A new signing for Team Northumbria. A Tough tackling, young midfielder who arrives in the North East from Bradford City.
Ryan McKie - Forward Another new recruit joining TN from a college background. A tall athletic forward looking to make his mark on the squad and challenge for a starting spot.
Nicholas Hay - Midfielder Having played for TN last season, Nicholas soon established himself as a keen, attacking midfielder and is regarded as an important member of the team by his peers and coaching staff. Harry Simpson - Midfielder Tall athletic midfielder who has progressed through the university ranks into this seasons Northern League squad. Steven McCarthy - Midfielder Previously with Sunderland Academy, Steven is an exciting attacking player with an eye for a goal. Lewis Shorrock - Forward New signing for the upcoming season. The attacking midfielder joins the North East team from Fleetwood Town.
Gerard Richardson - Forward Another TN regular who has been present for a number of years. Fast, athletic striker who likes to run the ball through and score goals. Ben Dibb-Fuller - Forward Fast, energetic winger who is keen to beat their opponent to deliver a dangerous cross. Not one to shy away from scoring a spectacular goal and featured many a time on the scoresheet last season. Andrea Ardelean - Forward After joining at the start of last season, Andrei quickly made his mark featuring regularly and scoring goals on his debut season in the Northern League.

What a shock it was for us all on Thursday night when Tommy Kirkland was taken poorly. I don’t think he remembers much of what was going on or did go on in a moment when, let’s be honest, we thought that the final whistle had gone for Tommy and he was on ‘borrowed’ extra time.was was was on When the paramedics explained that his heart rate was at 17%, what else could we be thinking? Well it certainly wasn’t, we’ll get him to the hospital and he’ll be back home by 3am, because he was! My thanks to all those who helped make him comfortable and for all the messages that came in wishing him well. A big thank you to Ian White our club secretary for staying at hospital with Tommy and bringing him home. I popped in to Tommy in the morning to see how he was and whilst he had had a seizure at the match, we all knew it wasn’t the first. I’ve known Tommy since he first arrived at the club when he was 18. This club has been a large part of our lives and Tommy is like a family member of a big family that is Penrith Football Club. His focus on Friday morning was to be at the match today. He continues to amaze me and he’ll always be full of surprises and whilst you all saw him go out on a stretcher on Thursday night, he’ll be walking to his seat today and ready for another match as if nothing happened! We have a job to do today. There was a lot of positives from the game on Thursday night. One good goal and one penalty which we could debate about. Marske are a good side and it’s highly probable with the two-leg semi-final in the FA Vase, they’ll be at that Wembley Final. We missed a couple of good chances and the defence performed very well. On another day it could have been a draw or a narrow win. Let’s all get behind the lads. Come on you Bonny Blues Billy

07/03/2018 Stockton Town 2 Bishop Auckland 0 – Ebac Northern League Division One Now, how does this blog thing go again? It’s been a painfully long time without a game, thanks to the Beast from the East. Stockton will be glad to game a game or two under their belt before their Vase semi- final against Marske. Bishop Auckland probably wished the weather had inflicted another postponement. In the end, as far as Bishop Auckland are concerned, it was all a bit too easy for their opponents. This despite making a decent fist of competing for the first half hour or so. In fact they had the better of the chances in the opening 15 minutes. Shaun Ryder produced a terrific free kick up and over the defensive wall that was well saved by Stockton keeper Michael Arthur. Minutes later, Thomas McAloon was within a whisker of connecting with a scissors kick effort. They planted several crosses into the Stockton box but just didn’t have enough players forward to get on the end of them. And in the last 15 minutes of the game No 9 Luke Sullivan had a couple of efforts, but other than that, they didn’t offer much. Sullivan cut a lone figure up front and didn’t seem to get much service. For Stockton, the game couldn’t have gone much better. Once they took the lead, they took control of the game and never looked like relinquishing that control. They got a competitive game under their belts. They played well. They were able to introduce substitutes to give several members of the squad playing time and they took their goals well. The game started to turn in the 27th minute when Jamie Owens had a couple of shots in a twominute spell. They took the lead in the 33rd minute when James Risborough took a quick free kick, leaving the Bishop Auckland defence exposed. Kevin Hayes read the kick and got in front of his marker before taking the ball round Bishops keeper Adam McHugh and slotting it into the net. In the 36th minute Stephen Tobin “took one for the team” when he brought Risborough down just as the Stockton winger was about to break past the back four to have a clear run on goal. Tobin was duly booked for the foul. Hayes should have doubled his and his team’s tally in the 50th minute when he missed the target with a first-time shot with the goal gaping in front of him after an Owens cross found him running in at the far post. The game was effectively settled in the 57th minute with a gem by Stockton skipper Adam Nicholson. More than 30 yards out from the Bishop Auckland goal, he was given time and space, allowing him to look up, spot McHugh off his line and sail an exquisite lob into the net. Ryder had one last effort for Bishop Auckland with the last kick of the match in the fourth minute of added time, but Arthur made a comfortable save diving to his left. Straight forward for Stockton; lacklustre by Bishop Auckland.

On Sunday 25th Feb Penrith AFC Ladies were meant to play Warrington Wolverines in the Quarter final of the League Plate. Katherine Savage describes this one to be as tough as it one was in an entertaining affair when the teams met in the preseason period and played out a 4-4 draw. The Penrith AFC Development team were due to play Barrow Celtic Ladies in the Lancashire League. Somewhat frustratingly, Penrith AFC Ladies drew the clubs Development team in the quarter final of this seasons Cumberland County Cup The 8-1 final score certainly doesn’t tell the whole story as it was the young Development team who impressed in the first half and were very unlucky to find themselves 2-1 down at the break. The Ladies team opened the scoring in only the 3rd minute with a debut goal from Clare Almond. The Development team grew in confidence as their compact formation frustrated the Ladies team. The Development team were also looking threatening in attack and it was no surprise when they equalised through Becca Alderson in the 28th minute. The Ladies regained the lead in the 38th minute when 16 year old Abbie Frizzle got on the end of a well worked corner routine and directed the ball into the net. HT 2-1 The Ladies scored early in the 2nd half to settle nerves and their greater experience and fitness eventually proved decisive with an 8-1 final score. So its Penrith AFC Ladies who progress to the Semi finals of the County Cup however credit also goes to the Development team for a spirited performance. Penrith AFC Ladies are away to Workington Reds Ladies. This will be played on Sunday 18 March. In the other Semi Final Carlisle United Ladies are at home to Crown Laithes Ladies in the other Semi. The Women’s County Cup final is scheduled for Friday 11th May

Page 20 It’s been a frustrating few weeks for the Academy after an excellent performance
winning 2-0 at home to Burneside who sit 3rd in the league. This was meant to set us up for a good run in to the end of the season only for our game to be called off against Ambleside Utd reserves on 17th Feb as they unfortunately folded due to lack of players and then there was the debacle of last Saturday. Obviously the weather is still icy cold but the pitches at Frenchfield were inspected early Saturday morning and were deemed not playable. Under normal circumstances this would have been acceptable but it was a beautiful sunny day and it was blatantly obvious that come 2.30pm they would have recovered. It was proven as I personally went to check and it was an ideal day for a game of football. Langwathby were our opponents who were obviously as frustrated as us and they did offer to switch the fixture to their place but by then I had notified the league, officials and players so yet again another weekend went by with no game. It’s very difficult to get any consistency when you get forced breaks between games and with an ever changing starting eleven it makes a settled side nigh on impossible. With all this said, we are looking forward to our rearranged fixture this Saturday against Penrith Saints but this depends on the extent of the “Beast from the East” which is another cold weather front with the threat of snow. I’m all for global warming if it gets the lads a game week in week out! On the Player front I was delighted to welcome Matty Read to the Academy after he offered to help us out from our first team and he really did help the lads out. Another addition is the one and only Kyle May (First Team Manager) who has also offered his services to develop the players when he can. I would also like to welcome Robert Stockdale who joins us from Keswick. Robert is a 16 year old who recently moved to the area and spent a considerable time with Plymouth Argyle academy so he’s one to keep an eye out for. Another to keep an eye on is Luke Hunter who has done tremendously well with us so far after rejoining the club from Carlisle Utd. I am also over the moon on the return to the club for Jake Burrow who’s first spell with us was very successful scoring for fun. Let’s hope he Picks up where he left off and lastly but certainly not least I am delighted to announce the return of Mikey Watson. Mikey is a superb keeper who left us a couple of seasons ago to join Queen of the South but contacted before Christmas to request to come back to which I said in an instant absolutely yes. We are currently in the process of the transfer and I hope to get him a few games before the end of the season. I will be looking for a strong finish to the season but with a settled side so let’s hope availability isn’t an issue and we can push on and with some strong under 16’s coming through who I’ve been impressed with the future looks very bright for the Academy, Reserves and hopefully the first team. We see a shop leave the high street, well in this case it was King Street in 2014 and that shop for many years had been trading and serving the community through selling stationary an ink cartridges, but something else it did on two floors, with its metal winding stair case, was it made banners and posters and for someone who just wanted to step off the street and get some photocopying done, it was so convenient. The business changed hands. It rebranded and as part of its new brand, it moved out of the high street location, possibly as a saving. A lot of businesses do this and I’ve worked with a few. For Chris Murray, at that time, in order to set out on his dream to have his own business, he saw a gap in the market of opportunity. Chris had an idea that would fill a hole and the potential walk in trade that had existed for all those years was still there; he had to move fast.
Opportunity in business is sometimes born out of convenience or inconvenience and one late night he was sitting at home on his computer pondering this new career. He looks back and remembers, maybe it was that last glass of red wine that just nudged him with that extra push of courage, which meant he clicked the enter button when it said ‘please confirm your payment’ and Penrith Posters was created. Why Penrith Posters? Well what he had bought was a secondhand scanner printer and Chris, like many small business owners when they start out, was already working full time, so in the evening he was working on his new idea. The kitchen table became his desk, so he set off designing and making posters. It was a start, but it wasn’t on the high street. By 2015 it was in Friargate, two doors away from Eden FM Radio, who set up and switched on their new studio in May 2015. There was a natural link in marketing and the need for marketing materials.

The down side of Friargate on that side of road is there is no fibre broadband. Chris on moving to his premises got his phone line, but only had the basic broadband which meant loading digital images was not easy. He was balancing two jobs, working from his kitchen; working during the day time until early afternoon, then he would do evening shifts at Halfords and work the weekends there too. Eden FM shared the same trials with broadband loading music and even with the BT telephone exchange just separated by a wall and the car park of Eden FM. As Chris found it a year on after being at Friargate, the promises of it happening from BT simply weren’t delivered. To take his business to the next level, he took an enormous leap of faith. I’m pleased he did and many of you would have seen the support in the Eden Local and you
may have heard Penrith Posters advertise regularly on Eden FM? We have worked in securing contracts together and recommending each other and at the start of 2017, Chris secured the lease on 4 Market square, Penrith, right in the heart of the town. He changed his working week, increased his hours for his own business whilst still working evenings from 4.30pm and still working Saturdays and Sundays at Halfords. It’s not the final chapter, as I see this business just growing and growing, because Chris has such a great work ethic and dedication, which in February saw him finally take the plunge and put all of his working hours into his business. It was time to also promote that he doesn’t just do posters. He hasn’t since he stepped out of the kitchen. He does pretty much everything in print. Penrith Print today has moved far beyond just doing posters. They print a wide range and variety of stationary for businesses, local groups and personal use. They do menus, funeral memorial cards, moving house cards, general leaflets, business cards, signage and all types of banners. A specialist in short print runs, you can have 50 business cards or 5,000. They are a specialist in short run (often single) bespoke posters ranging in sizes from A4 to A0. They use the latest HP wide format machines which allow them to print up to 60” wide and 50 metres long.
