Welcome to Frenchfield

A warm welcome to our visitors today, their players, staff, supporters representing Billingham Synthonia, our match officials, our regulars, new supporters and our match sponsor, who is also our main sponsor, Atkinson’s Building Contractors. As we all know, football has its ups and downs and in the history of every team, including ourselves, whilst on the day we might have come good, we have equally in the first half of the season had more than just one bad day at the office! I’m not sure if many of you know how long it takes to put a programme together and for what is a small audience of people that buy it, whether this is 10 or 110, but the same effort each week goes in, along with the same amount of time. For example, I’m writing this late Thursday night waiting for the results to come in so I can put an up to date table and all the stats in, so it is current for today’s match. In order to get the right team line up for our opponents today, I researched the last 5 matches and the teams they’ve had, to get as accurate a team as I could to date. To write some of the reports, you need to follow all the teams associated with the seniors, watching the players move from teams to teams. The ‘Synners’ today have seen some changes these last few months, with the introduction of a new captain and their player manager. I’ve watched their season’s performance and all those teams in the group around us and the ones which I have a great respect for, are the teams that wherever they are in the table, especially those that haven’t got the big budgets, still just get out there and go again knowing inevitably where they’ll be in the table and this is just purely based on all their efforts and commitment to get those results. This doesn’t mean they can’t turn out and play to win, it just means scoring goals might mean that they still can’t win, even though they needed that win. Our opponents today have the courage to play and keep playing and whilst on Thursday they lost 6 – 1 against a strong West Auckland, yep it was the side that hammered us 5 – 1, then in a closer match took the double, beating us at Frenchfield 1 – 2. The ‘Synners’ are here and it’s game on (continued over page). Photograph Lee Quinn © Away at North Shields
“Three all, we’ll take it! Not sure who the bloke on the end is though!”
It takes all sorts to be involved as a volunteer in any voluntary organisation. Football is one of 1000’s that would not exist without volunteers. In the last 12 months, I’ve helped out in over a dozen local voluntary organisations and the local radio station, Eden FM is one, which is a 24 hour 365 days of the year commitment. With help from Bradley, our team mascot, Karl Collinson, Alex Scott and even our Town Mayor Scott Jackson, EFM’s voluntary engineer and IT ‘guru’ Steve Hall made it possible to broadcast live, local football. With seven live matches covered at Frenchfield, the away match at Guisborough Town by Eden FM was broadcast here in Penrith, with clips on Zetland FM and online across the world. Well not many know how many hours go in to making sure these things happen, just like in making sure the Frenchfield facility means the lights go on, the gates open, the pitch is ready and the bar is open. As the season closes, it’ll be 30 match day programmes completed, adding to a shelf with almost already 300 previous publications. All community publications, Bonny Blues programme this season with its senior men’s, ladies, under 18s, girls and boys football that is our future, along with efforts to track our past, I really hope this continues in bringing Penrith vets together and the community for the 125 year celebration. It’s been my first season as programme editor for the Bonny Blues, a follower for almost 20 years I’ve got in for free this season! It’s been a challenging season for all. From 8th March programme to the 7th April, which was seven programmes, for anyone with dyslexia, it was a challenge; particularly in between the day job, which was producing two other publications in that time. I couldn’t have done it without my wife reading and checking every page and report I wrote. Thanks Mrs Q! The 2017-18 season has been a roller coaster ride. Kyle May for me has achieved so much and we have a team that has not given up and achieved so much with some amazing individual attributes along the way to keep us heading out of relegation. In our programme on 8th March, Kyle set the target of winning 5 out of the last 10. A target of 15 points. We go into today knowing we have taken 11 points out of a possible 18. Losing one to Marske on 8th March and not losing since, 3 points today would take us to 14 points with three matches remaining. Many of our team and individual performances are reflected in our reports from previous matches in Kyle’s and Billy’s Blog, but seeing the players and the likes of Martyn Coleman taking three hat-tricks in four matches, John Murray settling in also with a recent hat-trick, the consistency of Grant Davidson and the energy of Connor Shields, well I could go on and on and on, I’ll just say well done. I am only skimming the surface in talking of the talent we have, which deserves a lot of credit in their achievements. As a ‘unit’ playing regularly, voiced when I talk to Kyle every week, when it comes together as it has, it is quite a team.
What have we got for you today?

It was that time again, to get on the phone and have a catch up with Kyle May. We were straight into the North Shields match. Over to Kyle… “We started really well and got straight into it with Martyn’s goal. We had a few chances before that. We were a bit sloppy at times in the first half but we held it together and they couldn’t score. Through the game we created the better chances. Second half we gave it away. It was a lucky goal looping up after the shot was blocked. We were struggling with some key players out like Tyler and Kelvin but hopefully they’ll be back today. We were forced to play some players which we knew couldn’t last the game”. There were concerns over the growing list of injuries. Kyle stressed that whilst we have some players hopefully returning for today’s match at North Shields, he explained that due to players absent and injured, we had a few players not as fit as he would have liked. As a result, we made some early changes. At 25 minutes, Sam Bell came in to replace Brad Hayton, but Sam later came off and was replaced by Jordon Lawson. The worst blow wasn’t in North Shields equalizing, Coleman, as Kyle described it, had so many chances. He reckoned 8 – 10 and putting the second goal in, we were ahead but under pressure. It was at 75 minutes Connor Shields replaced Robbie Hebson, who was helped off the pitch by Yasmin and in my call with him, he confirmed that Robbie had a broken leg! It was a game fought to the end and we had played a side 6th in the table and on another we had taken the three points. Importantly though, Martyn Coleman, once again put three away.

On the road with the Bonny Blues to the Darren Persson Stadium. It’s the match report, but for those visiting us for the first time with programme in hand, this is Karl’s version, which as quoted by Karl, ‘it might be a bit fussy’. This may be down to the coach that set off from Penrith with Karl and I with 47 fans! A great bunch of people who turned out for the day, leaving at 10.30am with a stop off on the way at the Lion and Lamb and then the rest was a memory of what can be remembered of the day, as it is a bit of a blur! In support of our reports, the Tweets as it happened from North Shields Twitter. North Shields 3 Penrith AFC 3 by Karl Collinson The Bonny Blues travelled to the Darren Persson Stadium looking to keep their impressive run going, aiming to climb away from the Northern League Division 1 drop zone.
Match Report
Kyle May's men were cheered on by a healthy away following and it didn't take long for them to see the net ripple. A delightful ball into Coleman in the 7th minute saw the talisman turn his defender and smash an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net. 7’ Goal. 1-0 Penrith. Martyn Coleman smashes a shot past Robinson from just inside the box. It was an ironic moment as in the 2nd minute, the ball came back off the home keeper straight to Coleman who decided to take 1 touch too many and the home stopper collected the ball via the post. 4’ Jonny Murray’s shot palmed away by Robinson. Coleman latched on to the loose ball and hit the post before Robinson took control. Penrith were by far the better team and should have gone in at the break leading by more than the one goal.

46’ GOAL! 1-1! Lewis Suddick smashes one in from range for his first goal for the club! Penrith kept pushing forward in, which was now, an end to end game. Andy Murray Jones missed a glorious chance when he took his eye off the ball at the vital time and the ball rolled under his foot when 8 yards out. It was that man again, Coleman, who put the Bonny Blues ahead. A hopeful ball forward saw Coleman beat his defender for pace, round the keeper and slide the ball home past the covering defender. Brilliant goal. 60’ Goal. 2-1 Penrith. Coleman rounds Robinson and avoids a slide from Donnison to tap in to an empty net. A key moment in the match saw Mal Holliday leave the pitch due to injury and this seemed to disrupt the Penrith defence alongside linchpin striker Ben Harmison coming off the bench for Shields. 70’ Ben Harmison on for Ryan Carr Their substitute side footed a cross home with only his 2nd touch before Coleman had a chance for his hattrick, but his header went just over. In the 72nd minute Stuart Dixon saved well from Harmison but the ball broke straight back to the big striker who scored his 2nd goal via another deflection. 74’ GOAL! 2-2! Holmes cross is blocked but he gets the ball back and finds Harmison in the box who slots in to the bottom left hand corner! 86’ Coleman with a diving header at the far post just over. 87’ Coleman fires an effort across the face of goal. 90’ Coleman again shoots but it’s easy for Robinson. 90+1’ GOAL! 3-2 North Shields! Ben Harmison at the second attempt forces in a shot to put Shields in front! Heartbreak would turn to ecstasy for the travelling Cumbrians as the referee pointed to the spot in the 95th minute just before Connor Shields put the loose ball in the net. 90+4 Penrith awarded a penalty. Up stepped Coleman who scored his 3rd hat-trick in 4 games to give the Bonny Blues a share of the points. 90+5 Goal. 3-3. Coleman steps up and his lifted penalty beats Robinson. What a game, 3-3.
Billy’s Blog
A disastrous start after HT saw North Shields get their equaliser. Some neat football resulted in a shot from 20 yards looping up off the back of a Penrith defender which left Stuart Dixon helpless as the ball sailed into the goal.
It’s been very welcome to see Martyn Coleman rediscover his goal scoring capabilities as we continue to be in a battle to steer ourselves away from the bottom three. With four league games to play, it looks like it’s going to the last ball kicked before it will be decided. On Tuesday we had the pleasure of welcoming Luton Town, who before their match against Carlisle United, used the ground for a training session. Behind the scenes, we are working tirelessly to make the Club become sustainable for the long term. Since relocating, we have added several teams, along with our Academy and Reserve sides, plus more Junior teams. This is a great reflection on all our volunteers that make this happen. With sustainability in mind, we hope to add the other wing to the clubhouse this summer. It is hoped we can muster the capital and the manpower. Without the right backing, it won’t happen. Hopefully this can be achieved and knowing the people involved, I am hopeful we can all pull together to make it happen. Around 40 years ago a friend of mine, Mike Arragon, suggested to me the words for our club motto, RES NON VERBA. At the time I asked him what it meant. He replied, DEEDS NOT WORDS. Here’s hoping our improved run continues today. With four games left, two at home, the ground will be used for several junior competitions. I know these youngsters will never forget playing in the stadium and we are delighted to welcome them along with their loved ones. Billy

Billingham Synthonia FC History An introduction to 'The Synners'
Welcome to the visitors
Billingham Synthonia F.C. is a football club based in Billingham, England. Members of the Ebac Northern League & established in 1923-24, they first contested the South Bank & District League, before joining the Teesside League. After the Second World War, Synthonia rejoined the Teesside League for a last term before joining the Northern League in 1945-46. The name 'Synthonia' comes from a contraction of an agricultural product manufactured by ICI (Imperial Chemical Industries); 'Synthetic Ammonia' (a fertiliser). ICI was a company which was the principal employer in Billingham for many years and encouraged its employees to partake in a number of different sports. The Synners were connected to ICI until the early 1990's when ICI sold off its Billingham operations. The clubs first ground was on the south side of Belasis Lane, part of ICI's original sporting complex. They moved across the road to their new Belasis Lane ground for the start of the Northern League campaign in 1945. A notable first in football occurred on this ground in 1952, when Synthonia took on an RAF Team in the first floodlit game in Northern England and the first Amateur team to play under lights. Before a crowd of 3,000, Synthonia won 8-4. They left the Belasis Lane ground to make way for a new ICI office block in 1958, moving to Central Avenue with a 2,000 capacity Cantilever Stand (the longest in the Country at the time) and a running track around the perimeter, the stadium opened on September 6th by Lord Derby. The first game against Bishop Auckland ended 2-2 with an attendance of 4,200, the club's highest. The stadium was also used for an international athletics meeting. Synthonia left there Central Avenue ground at the end of the 2016-17 season and currently play at the Norton Sports Complex. The Post-War Years Synthonia played their first Northern League match on the 25th August 1945 with a 5-4 win away at Shildon. Scorers that day were G Hawes with a hat-trick, A Rhodes & H Wilson (Wilson is the 10th all-time Synners top goal-scorer with 114 goals). After coming third in their inaugural Northern League season & 'Dusty' Rhodes scoring a club record eight goals in a match at South Bank on Christmas Day 1945, Synners went on to become runner-up on three occasions; 49-50, 50-51, 51-52. In 50-51 Billingham didn’t concede a home league goal all season, keeper Harry Armstrong preserving the record in a 3-0 win over Bishop Auckland in the last game of the season. The record stands to this day. A first trophy as Northern Leaguers came in 51-52, winning the Northern League Challenge Cup Captained by Irving Johnstone. A 'Biffer' Smith goal saw a 1-1 draw with Tow Law, in the replay Wally Buffham scored the only goal in a 1-0 win. Buffham went on to score 106 goals for the club. A first league title came in 56-57, Bill McQuarrie (5th in the all-time goal-scorers with 138 goals) being top scorer with 39 goals in all competitions.
Billingham Synthonia FC History - An introduction to 'The Synners' (continued from page 9) The 88-89 season saw the 1st Division title claimed for a second time with the firepower of striker Allen and Charlie Butler (3rd Synners all-time goal scorer with 183 goals); the start of a formidable partnership. A third Northern League title was secured in 89-90 and a third League Cup was also claimed in a 5-2 win over Whitby Town. Penrith Football Club 1894 - 2019 In search of 125 years of football………Can you help? I intend to co-ordinate at least 125 interviews that will be recorded and written up. I’ll collect some clips of film and we all need to build the biggest collection of club history together for this ultimate year. I estimate at least 300 images are needed of our past to make that year that bit special, with a personal publication by the people and players of Penrith. I have also, this week, discussed having a ‘Return to the Town, 125-year exhibition’ for a period of three months to be held at the Penrith Museum from around July to September in 2019. If you can help, please call 01768 862394 or email leepenrithafc@gmail.com

What’s happened in the drop zone since Saturday? By Lee Quinn Bishop Auckland 19th in the table, the Bishop’s, since losing on Boxing Day 6 – 1 to the Bonny Blues, their biggest loss this season, have been on a rocky path. The Bishop’s have lost six and won just one 1 – 4 away to Washington. It looked like they may have started to turn a corner when they beat North Shields at home 2 – 0 at the start of the month. Last week they took on our opponents at home and took 3 pts off the Synners in a 5 – 2 win. They hit a wall on Wednesday at home against an on form Sunderland RCA, losing 0 – 6. Today they are at home to Whitley Bay who are also not on form, losing eight of their last 10 matches. They got their first win mid-week against our opponents today. It was 3 – 1 to the Bay against the Synners. A match that could go either way for the Bishops or the Bay today. Newton Aycliffe In 16th place after 37 matches on 44 points, they have always been in the mix; their highest place probably around 14th they haven’t been higher than 15th since the end of 2017, almost rooted to 16th place. Just 8 points between them and 20th place Jarrow Roofing, who they played on Tuesday at home and lost 0 – 1, has certainly given them a challenge at Boldon CA Sports Ground today when they play the Roofers again who’ll be looking for a six pointer. They then have four matches in a row starting with Seaham Red Star on Monday, who are hot on their heels, just 3pts behind them as we go into today’s fixtures and their opponents have two games in hand. If the weather stays and the match wins sway, they could be anywhere between 16th and 19th in the table by full time next weekend, but they might catch Consett or Whitley Bay on a wobble. These next two are battles to win. Jarrow Roofing BCA Are the Roofers going to escape? Maybe? Before the Christmas break, the Bonny Blues were 20th after 22 matches on 15 points, the Roofers were 19th after 21 matches on 17 points. By the time we played the Roofers away, on soggy Tuesday night 9th January, we were about 19th having played 26 and we were on 25 points, the Roofers were 20th having played 23 matches with 17 points. We left with 3 goals, a clean sheet and 3 points taking us up to 18th place. As we start today’s fixtures, after Thursday night’s result at home to West Auckland, which they drew 1 – 1, it’s a match they finished with ten men, with Dennis knight sent off for kicking out at Mckeown. His threatening the referee and his proposal to ‘chin him’ after the game, if proven will be down to an investigation. The referee for a moment left the pitch and players and fans had no idea what was going on. What we do know is the ref and official came out, spoke to the teams, played another 4 minutes and now there’ll be a lot of paper work! But for the Roofers, it looks like they’ll now lose a pivotal player for three matches, which could really make a difference in their seven matches left, which includes five more on a run of six home fixtures to play, including 16th placed Newton Aycliffe today. Next Tuesday they have Guisborough Town. With two away matches to finish the season, they could put one big problem behind them before they reach those two away fixtures. If they can finally take the advantage of the matches they have in hand on all the teams between 15th and 22nd spot, they could pull through. I reckon Aycliffe and Guisborough could certainly do some damage here.
In the mix with Guisborough Town and Ryhope CW We’ve followed the other teams above the dog fight. Ryhope are flying now taking five wins out of their last six. Going into today’s fixture, they are 14th on 50 points with eight matches to go. They’ve had the odd slip; they lost at home to Guisborough Town in February and that’s who they’ll be playing today. The Priorymen have hit some good form, in that they’ve only lost one in their last eight. This was at home to Washington 0 – 3 at the end of March. With five draws in those eight, one of these was against Morpeth 1- 1. On 45 points after playing 36, beating 4th place Shildon on Wednesday night, they’ll definitely think they’re in with a chance today against Ryhope, but their last matches include Sunderland RCA, Dunston and two games with Marske. Washington and Billingham Synthonia Whilst Washy have been struggling through most of the season and rooted to 21 st in the table, on the day we took on Guisborough at home in September we had played 5 and had nil points. In that mix at that time we weren’t the only team; the likes of Stockton Town were then in 21st position. Anyone putting two wins together climbed and here we are seven months on where six points will make all the difference between now and the week ahead. Washington go into today knowing that with 18 points including our win on 31st March, they’ve conceded 27 goals and replied with 2 in the last four games, so their season finished a while ago in the table. Our visitors here today, well yes, the mathematics tells us the Synners fate. We are yet to know our own, but with their performance and with a change of side, with three games in hand on Washy, can they get off the bottom with six still to play? Good luck to all lads and supporters whatever the outcome. On another note Whilst this is our first, ‘What’s happened in the drop zone since Saturday’ I know, it sounds like some American ‘let’s go to war report’, but next week will be our last. However, for those avid programme and reader followers in town or out of town, after the Cumberland Cup, I am doing one final end of the season Bonny Blues 2017-18 round up that you can pre order, including the last two league matches and the Cumberland Cup final Mens and Ladies reports. 17/04/2018 West Auckland Town 2 Seaham Red Star 1 – Ebac Northern League Division One Unlike the professional game, we don’t have a wealth of post-match statistics on hand to dissect the game. If we did, the first half would have made interesting reading. West Auckland took an early grip of the game and dominated the first half. For every attack Seaham mounted, West mounted five or six of their own. They kept the ball and they kept it moving; they played it wide and they played it through the middle. They just couldn’t find a way through a resolute Red Star defence. They just lacked a little bit of invention and creativity to prise open the Red Star back line. In the first half, for all their possession, Red Star’s keeper Jordan Harkess didn’t have too many saves to make. Two of West’s best shots hit their own players who were on the ground and unable to get out of the way. In a one-way first half, the attacks by both teams were mostly one-sided too – West down the left and Red Star down the right. Despite all of that, the visitors could have gone into the break ahead. With five minutes to go there were loud (and fruitless) appeals for a penalty after West full-back Denver Morris kicked the ball against his arm in the area and then in added time Tommy Scott curled a shot round West keeper Shane Bland and the ball wasn’t too far wide of the post. West’s attacks finally bore fruit in the 52nd minute when a ball was sent across the Red Star box. The cross found Adam Mitchell who dummied one way and cut back before lifting the ball over Harkess and into the net. Even though they conceded a goal, Red Star had more of the game in the second half, took the game to West and were less under the cosh. They got their rewards just before the hour mark. West full back Jamie Cobain managed to get in the way of a Scott shot but Red Star winger Alex Ramshaw nicked the ball away from Cobain before he could regain his balance and the Seaham winger tucked a crisp shot past Bland to level it up. The lead only lasted six minutes. West won a corner and as the ball came into the box, Harkess ran off his line to claim it but missed, allowing Dan Parker to beat him to the ball and head it in. At the other end, Red Star continued to be dangerous on the break but they mostly committed only three players to an attack and were always outnumbered two to one by defenders. The win maintains West Auckland’s recent good run but they weren’t on top form. Red Star should have enough about them to keep them out of relegation worries.

Penrith AFC Ladies 1 – 1 Cammell Laird Ladies By Kath Savage Both Penrith and Cammell Laird went into this game boasting unbeaten league records. Penrith started brightly enough and had a couple of early efforts from distance from Livvy Johnston. Penrith made the breakthrough on 14 mins when Kim McCormick’s long free kick into the penalty area was swept past the Laird keeper by Nat Broad.
Where We Stand
Cammall Laird quickly responded and their pressure was rewarded when a poorly timed challenge by Penrith’s Charlotte Smith resulted in the award of a penalty. This was dispatched to make it 1-1 in the 26th minute. Cammell Laird took charge of the game and Penrith weathered considerable pressure for the remainder of the 1st half. HT 1-1 Into the 2nd half Penrith introduced Hannah Coulthard and they were able to regain some hold to the midfield zone of the pitch. The 2nd half continued to be a fiercely fought midfield battle with clear chances few and far between. Cammell Laird had the best of the chances and Penrith had keeper Michelle Jones to thank for a couple of very brave saves at the feet of the Laird strikers. In the end both teams had to settle for a draw which sees them maintain their unbeaten league records. However it is Laird who maintain a slight advantage in the race for the league title. Preston North End 1 – 3 Penrith AFC Ladies By Kath Savage Penrith were made to work very hard for the points against a much improved Preston team. Penrith lacked match sharpness having not had a game for 3 weeks while Preston came into the game on the back of 3 straight victories. Right from the Kick off Preston refused to allow Penrith any time on the ball and constantly closed them down with a robust physical approach. Penrith resorted to playing down the channels and this proved fruitful mid way through the half when Nat Broad timed her run to get behind the Preston defence before rounding the keeper to score. Preston deservedly equalised before half time when they seized on a poor Penrith clearance and their striker fired home from distance. Ht 1-1 Into the 2nd half Preston’s pressing tactics eased somewhat as they tired. This allowed Penrith a little more time on the ball and they began to enjoy more possession and showed more attacking intent. Much of the play continued to take place in the middle third of the pitch with both teams looking for that bit of quality to win the game. In the 75th minute Penrith grabbed the initiative. Georgia Campbell’s constant threat on the right finally paid dividends when her cross found Clare Almond at the back post who headed home. Penrith professionally closed the game out limiting Preston’s opportunities before sealing the game with the final kick of the match when Nat Broad squared the ball to Hannah Coulthard to make it 1-3. 3 hard earned points and credit to Preston who could easily have taken something from this game. Penrith : Lawson, Nelson, Alderson, C.Smith, McCormick, Fawkes, Campbell, S.Smith(Coulthard), Hopton, Broad, Almond

Result in 18/04/18 Lunesdale 4-2 Academy. Poor first half from us. Better 2nd half but was up against a good Lunesdale side to be fair. Lots of positives though. Penrith Academy 1-0 Kirkoswald 14/04/18 – Matt Rogers Our visitors on Saturday were Kirkoswald Res and there were some very familiar faces in their team who have had spells with our club. Our Academy were 4 games unbeaten before this fixture and the lads were in fine form making it 5 games unbeaten with a 1-0 win on the day.
Academy Report
This was a great advert for Westmorland Div 3 with a lot of youth on show in both teams. Penrith started brightly creating a number of chances and also defended very well limiting our visitors to half chances. Nathan Kerr was outstanding on the right flank and Penriths midfield were disciplined too. Mark Slee was in good form sweeping from the back and Ewbank & the Marshall brothers coped well. Penrith took the lead with a fine finish into the roof of the net from close range after some great work from Greg Hall and yes it was Luke Hunter who smashed it home getting his 5th goal in 4 games. Penrith were in control for the remainder of the 1st half and they thought they had scored a second only for the ref to rule it out as it was deemed not to have crossed the line. HT 1-0 2nd half Penrith changed their shape which seemed to unsettle them and KO came into the game creating a host of chances but found a Penrith defence in determined mood. Both teams had shots smash against the crossbar and KO had a goal line shout dismissed by the ref too. The game became very stretched late on and it was end to end for a period of time as KO looked for an equaliser but on the break Penrith were awarded a penalty but it was well saved by KO’s Sam Brown. Penrith eventually ran out deserved winners with Hunters goal separating the two teams. FT 1-0. After a solid display in the 1st half and an outstanding performance in the 2nd half I have to give the Man of the Match to Henry Marshall. Goal : LukeChairman Hunter Juniors - Karl Collinson reports
Under 10s - Penrith Blues v Castletown Blues - 15th April 2018 The Penrith side had a sluggish start to the game and seemed to lack a bit of confidence against a Castletown team they would eventually match both physically and skilfully. Castletown took advantage of this and scored two good goals in quick succession after exerting some early pressure on the slightly shell shocked home side. It was a well fought strong contest with some tough challenges going in from both sides. Penrith grew in confidence in the first half and looked to open up their opposition with some accomplished passing moves. The teamwork finally paid off when Ted broke through and finished off an excellent move with a great shot that beat the keeper low down inside the post. The game looked a lot more even by half time as Penrith started to believe in their ability. The second half was all Penrith with lots of pressure being applied to the away side. Ross and Finnan were solid at the back for Penrith and kept the opposition at bay. The home team just couldn’t find the breakthrough pass or shot that mattered despite playing some of their best football this season. The closest they came was when Ellis was kicked on the halfway line and swung a leg at the ball in frustration. The balls bounce fooled the keeper and hit the right angle. Close to a Beckham special! Castletown scored a soft late goal, totally against the run of play which killed the game and deflated Penrith a little. However, they should be proud of one of their best performances of the season against a strong team. It’s a funny old game football, but if they keep up that level of passion, commitment and teamwork they will only get better. Great to watch and well done lads. Penrith AFC Wolves 3 v 2 Castletown Tigers Based on this Novembers meeting between these teams much was promised as two well matched teams met on a dull day at Frenchfield. Castletown started the brighter with forward pairing Max Owens and Ben Ellis causing problems with their pace and direct play, both players coming close on numerous occasions. Ellis was to break the deadlock, played into a 1 on 1 situation by Owens and finishing neatly, Wolves defence were tested severely over the opening 30 minutes, but held strong to keep the deficit to a minimum. Penrith although starting slowly started to create as the first half progressed and were unlucky not be level at half time after Luke Leonard had a goal disallowed. As they say... football is a game of two halves and whilst Castletown won the first half, Penrith were much improved in the second half and began to dominate for long periods, Wolves top scorer Luke Leonard first equalising before giving the Wolves the lead and then going on to complete his hat-trick, to give Penrith a comfortable lead, Falcons front pairing still looked dangerous on the break and so it proved when Ben Ellis once again broke through on goal to finish low, a possible nervy finish to the game never arose as Penrith continued to command the second half and had another goal disallowed. A well deserved victory Men of the Match Jack Turley (Wolves) and Bradley Goad (Falcons) Langwathby 2 v 5 Penrith AFC Wolves Second to last game of the league campaign saw Wolves needing to pick up all 3 points to maintain their charge for a second place finish. A very scrappy first half saw Langwathby take the lead following as scramble in the box Ben Berg taking his opportunity well, before Wolves captain Luke Kemp fired home from a rebound. Another mess in the box saw Langwathby capitalise, Berg again finishing well. Wolves cranked up the pressure, Josh Swinson beating his man before finishing low across goal, Wolves piled on the pressure, Luke Leonard unlucky to have 2 goals judged offside. The second half saw a change in tactic from wolves, with the attacking pairing of Leonard and Moore sitting inside their own half to avoid the offside trap, which paid off inside 5 minutes, Langwathby defence now playing on the half way line saw Leonard played through on goal twice scoring on both occasions to take his tally to 28 for the season. The cherry on the icing on the cake was Wolves final goal, neat interplay from defence through midfield saw Jake Knight deft first time chip on the turn played Christy Moore in on goal to take the Wolves to the last game of the main league season. Men of the Match Ben Berg (Langwathby) and Luke Leonard (Wolves)
