Well, we’ve finally arrived at our last home match of the 2017-18 season. Firstly, it’s a warm welcome to Stockton players, officials and their supporters to our Frenchfield stadium this afternoon. Welcome to our regulars and possibly some support from Carlisle as United are away to Port Vale. Welcome to Paul Tomkinson an avid supporter of the Bonny Blues and our match sponsor today. I am sure all the Bonny Blues would like to congratulate them on their achievements in the FA Vase and the League cup and wish them luck in these matches. From an U18’s team to ENL Div 1 in just 8yrs winning their first trophy in 2012-13 season. Michael Dunwell’s team today are a well-oiled machine and this season they can certainly have an impact on our future today. With a 4 – 1 win away on Wednesday night this week against our opponents we play away to Newcastle Benfield. Stockton Town arrive here today 9th in the table on 59 points and they are just 5 days away from their league cup semi final at home to Dunston UTS who’ll be looking to make amends for losing in the Durham County Cup on Thursday night against Consett 4 – 2 (full report page 23). They have 90 minutes with our lads today and a tough trip then on Tuesday night away against Seaham Red Star who are without a win in nine matches, desperate for a win as they are now 19th in the table. Seaham Red Star were on 38 points 24th March in 15th spot with four games in hand on the Bonny Blues with 12 matches remaining. Today we are both on 41 points and suddenly those goals make all the difference, where will we be 2 hours after three? With the Bonny Blues in 18th place, Below Red Star in 19th spot we have Jarrow Roofing BCA who on that same day 24th March were on 27 points, they also had four games in hand against the Bonny Blues but a slip up at home on Tuesday this week losing to Guisborough town 0 – 2 (full report page 22) this means they start today with 38 matches played, just one game in hand on the Bonny Blues but 4 point behind us. Introduction Continued from page 3 For the Roofers and the five teams between 16th and 20th place it certainly is crunch time today. The Roofers are at home to an inform Team Northumbria who haven’t lost in their last five. The results today maybe key in the final outcome for them to stay in the league with the need get out of the bottom three. In my review of this week’s and next matches (pages 20 – 21) there are a number teams that could of easily been in the bottom four. So here we are with three matches left, we know who is up for promotion this season as for who is going down well, now that is a question? Before I close this opening, I would to share that I have enjoyed the experience of co-ordinating, writing and producing the 2017-18 match day programmes. It has been hard work, it has been challenging but in many ways a rewarding experience. I mentioned this last week so I won’t go on. There has been a lot of late nights into early morning and I won’t lie when I say I am looking forward to the break, a rest and some evenings off. As for next season I will have to think long and hard, on putting myself through this and those around me again. My thanks to all those that have helped throughout the season in contributing towards the programme with reports, photos, the selfie supporters, a special thank you to Penrith Posters and Chris Murray the owner for making it happen. For those that are here for the first time today, they may have missed what has really happened at Frenchfield since Kyle May played his last match for Shildon here on 1st November against Penrith. Shildon were 4th in the table. We were 20th after 17 games with 9 points, five points adrift of Jarrow Roofing and one point ahead of Washington. Kyle hadn't been at Shildon that long. Many of us know that in May 2017 when We lost to Workington Reds in the Cumberland Cup, Kyle was the player with the captain’s arm band being presented with the cup. He played 650 games for the Reds, 544 league matches in his 12 year career, scoring 32 goals. From player to manager, what can you expect? What did you expect? Whatever your thoughts, did you expect to be where we are today? Whatever happens today or in the next two matches, the work by Kyle, Andy Coyles and all those working the bench and all the players involved, they can if nothing else look back today before they kick the ball at 3pm as one massive team achievement.

Continued from page 4 From the time Kyle joined, I've caught up with him most weeks to prepare his report for the programme. We discussed the changes in the side as they happened, the good days and the bad days, problems arising, problems needed solving in the journey from 17 games with 9 points to 39 games and 41 points. What were the odds? So, this week, we first talked about last week’s match against a growing in strength Billingham Synthonia side and as always, I then just listened to Kyle and took the notes. “We probably made hard work of it, but we got the right result. In the first 15 they did reasonably well. We gave them confidence and we didn't take advantage of mistakes. The pitch was a bit bobbly and at half time, we had a few little words; the lads understood the importance of the situation. People expected us to win. They had done their homework; I respect them for that. We found ourselves under a little bit of pressure and when you don't create the chances and don't convert the ones you have, it creates more pressure. People were expecting the lads to go out and win. We got a positive reaction and no matter how it happened at this stage, we got the three points. In 21 games we got 32 points. Across the matches we’ve had games like this, where we keep working at it and we improve”. As we draw to the end of this season, I asked Kyle to summarise his thoughts. “In some ways it’s been easy for me coming in with an outsider point of view. The team was on a low. I had to get them to believe we could come back as a team and this would be through every single player’s strengths bringing individual performance and improving fitness. I am very proud of what they have done. Being top of the form table at this stage is a credit to the lads and everyone. We’ve been playing catch up and one better team as a group. Every player has improved. Getting the players back in the team, when I joined was so important having those senior players. We’ve the best goal scorers in Martyn, Tyler and Macca who have made a massive impact and Grant as a captain, is the best centre half in the league. Sometimes people don’t always what Andy Murray Jones’ work in set pieces does, defending, how he holds up play. Stockton are a good team. I learned a lesson that day. We played them and have changed our formation since then. Thank you to everyone for your support.”

21/04/18 Penrith 2 Billingham Synthonia 0 - Report by Karl Collinson The Bonny Blues took on the Northern League Division 1 bottom side at Frenchfield Park in a must win game. After an impressive point at North Shields 7 days prior, Penrith were straight out of the blocks with Martyn Coleman testing the goalkeeper early on. A long ball from goalkeeper Stuart Dixon saw Jonny Murray out muscle his defender and was through on goal but the ball comes back off their keeper and lands at Andy Murray Jones but he gets his shot all wrong as he shoots wide of the gaping goal.
Match Report
The game settled down into a scrappy affair with Billingham defending well having made 9 changes to the previous weeks line up. The visitors rarely threatened as Penrith’s dominance in possession brought very few goal attempts. There was a nervous feel round Frenchfield Park at the half time break but that soon changed to cheers just a minute into the second period as the ball bounced across goal and Jonny Murray poked the ball home. That seemed to settle down the Bonny Blues as they began to play with more confidence. The introduction of Connor Shields added energy and the Billingham defence were struggling to cope with the substitutes raw pace. Penrith won a corner which Martyn Coleman floated into the 6 yard box where Andy Murray Jones leapt like a salmon to power a header into the back of the net. Job done. Penrith should have scored more with Main, Coleman and Shields going close but it was all about the result and the 3 points. After the midweek results, it is now in Penrith’s own hands in their fight against relegation, something that we haven't been able to say for some months. Credit to all the players as we sit 1st in the current form table after a fantastic string of results see us continue to pull away from the Northern League Division 1 drop zone.

As we come to the end of a really testing season, I feel a need to say a big thank you to several people who have played an important part in our club. Jim Nichol left his position of Manager. He worked his socks off on behalf of the Club.
Billy’s Blog
I know he was extremely disappointed with the results he achieved and felt in the best interests of the Club, the honourable thing to do was resign. A really genuine guy who will always be a friend of the Club. His assistant, Shaun Gardner also deserves a mention. I know both men still hold great respect for the Club. Lee Quinn took on the role of producing a match day programme, taking over from Brian Kirkbride who did a sterling job over many seasons. I know Lee has put in a lot of time and has found it a daunting task trying to pull everything together. He has vastly improved the programme covering all aspects of the Club, which has resulted, in my opinion, in the best community programme in the League. Deeds not Words. Great effort Lee. We work tirelessly to make our club a happy and welcoming place for everyone to be part of. It is so important this continues and everyone must feel they have a part to play. If anyone thinks we are missing a trick - LET ME KNOW! Football has given me many memories and friends. There will be a few at the game today. Ex-players George, better known as Bomber Allison, Willie Smith and Lawrie Coulthard. They will join Tim Bell, Rory Robinson and Marshall Monkhouse, who all represented the club in the 70s. They know they are welcome - top men, top club. This time of year gives the opportunity for all young players to play at Frenchfield Park with junior competitions. It is important they never forget the occasion along with their loved ones. Pre-season works will soon be underway. The pitch as you know has improved. The planned work will continue. I’m sure everyone here sends best wishes to our own Matt Rogers, an influential figure within the Club, who has worked tirelessly at Junior and Academy level. Matt suffered a setback with a heart attack. I am informed he is improving. Get better soon pal. I know we will get behind Kyle May, Andy Coyles and the players today as we continue to work our way to escape relegation. Billy

CLUB HISTORY
Welcome to the visitors
Stockton Town FC was formed initially in 1979 under the football clubs previous name Hartburn Juniors. Although records around that time are sketchy, it would appear the club was formed by Derrick Small who at the time was coaching youngsters from the Hartburn area of Stockton, at the YMCA It was at this time that the club home colours that remain now, yellow/royal shirts & royal shorts, was established. Throughout the eighties and nineties Hartburn Juniors continued to operate as a junior football club, competing in the Teesside Junior Football Alliance. The Club from time to time had various bases around the town but the early years of the new century saw a marked change in the Club. It was felt by the members of the club at that time that the club name didn’t really reflect the area whereby most players came from. The club had grown from predominantly having players in the Hartburn/Fairfield areas of Stockton to players who came from all over Stockton. It was therefore decided in the best interest of the club to change the clubs name to STOCKTON TOWN FC. There was also a desire within the club to try to resurrect Stockton Town as senior football club and it was felt a great development opportunity to achieve this from grass roots through a junior football club was possible. In April 2008 the Club underwent a massive investment totalling £1.4 million pounds that saw a partnership with Stockton Borough Council, Stockton 6th Form College and Our Lady & St Bedes School develop the facilities at the Site. This development was the springboard for a further expansion for the Club. One of the next steps for Stockton Town was to introduce Open Age Men’s Football to the Club. Stockton Town had proved very successful in producing top quality young players that then went on to play for various other local nonleague teams. The Club decided it wanted to give these youngsters an opportunity to stay within the Club if at all possible. So for the Season 2009/10 Stockton Town entered a team in the Teesside League 2nd Division. Their 1st game in Senior Football was an away fixture at St Marys College which saw a 2-1 defeat with Evan Ditchburn claiming Stockton’s goal. Having led the League for most of the Season they faded in the Spring to finish 4th. The Club and the Players were keen to progress and the summer of 2010 saw Stockton Town successfully apply for membership of the Wearside League for 2010/11 season. In the early part of their first season in the Wearside League the team struggled a little, but after a very impressive run of results after the Christmas/New Year break they finished a creditable 10th.
Stockton Town’s improvement continued in 201112, with a 3rd place finish and a League Cup Final appearance, unfortunately losing 2-0 to Ryhope CW. In 2012-13 Stockton Town lifted their first Trophy in senior football clinching the Wearside League Title with a spectacular run-in, winning the final 12 games to overhaul Willington FC. The success continued the following season with a 2nd Wearside League title and another Cup Final defeat to Ryhope CW. This heralded the start of a period of domination in the Wearside League by Stockton Town’s maturing squad. In 2014-15 the Club completed the clean sweep of Wearside. The won the League Title, League Cup, Shipowners Cup and Monkwearmouth Cup, a feat achieved only twice before in the long history of the League. Tthe team were unbeaten in all competitions and missed out on a ‘perfect’ season when losing their second last League game away to Prudhoe.

The next season saw a 4th consecutive League Title along with the League and Monkwearmouth Cup’s back in the Bishopton Road Trophy Cabinet. During this period the Club had worked tirelessly to improve their facilities to the standard required for promotion to the Northern League and this was achieved in the Spring of 2016 when the Club opened it’s 3G Stadium facility. The 2016-17 season saw unprecedented success continue in our first season in the Northern League 2nd Division by winning the League Title and losing the EA Cup Final to Northallerton Town on penalties. In a memorable first season in the Northern League the Club also had its first experience of the FA Vase, hosted a record crowd of 432 and topped the average attendance charts for Div2 (179). Stockton Town have risen from an U18’s team to ENL Div 1 in just 8yrs

Michael Dunwell - Manager started his career at Hartlepool United in 1996 where he spent 4 seasons before being released. He then had spells in Non-League with Bishop Auckland, Durham City, Billingham Synthonia, Norton & Stockton Ancients, Billingham Town (Player/Coach) and Northallerton Town.

He joined Stockton Town at the end of the 2012/13 season and featured in the last 4 games of the season which ended with Stockton Town claiming their first ever honour in senior football, the Wearside League Title. During the summer of 2013 Michael was appointed Player/Coach and the following season helped Stockton Town to the Wearside League Title again, scoring 18 goals in 26 games. Michael was then appointed 1st Team Manager in the summer of 2014. Things went from strength to strength under Michael and he steered the Club to an unprecedented clean sweep of Trophy’s in Season 2014/15 winning the Wearside League Title (3rd consecutive)along with the Wearside League Cup, Shipowners & Monkwearmouth Cup’s. This was then followed in 2015/16 by a 4th Wearside League Title and the Monkwearmouth & League Cup again culminating in promotion to the EBAC Northern League.The unprecedented success continued in 2016/17 as he took the team to the Division 2 title at the first attempt remarkably with almost the same squad he’d had for 4 years. JD Briggs Assistant Manager - joined Hartlepool United from school in 1996 and completed 2 years as a YTS before signing Professional forms in 1998. After 2 seasons pro at Hartlepool he was released and then spent time at various nonleague clubs including Bishop Auckland, Durham City, Guisborough Town, Peterlee, and Billingham Synthonia Due to a change in career outside of football JD was unable to play for a number of seasons before returning to sport in 2011 and setting up his own sport coaching company, delivering sport within primary schools around the north east. This change then lead to JD joining Stockton Town at the start of the 2013/14 season as a player before quickly assuming the role of player coach. After making a number of brief appearances at the end of the season JD became Assistant Manager for season 2014/15 to assist and work alongside Manager and long time friend Michael Dunwell. Liam Jordan – Liam is a product of the youth system here at Stockton. He broke through into the team season 2015/16 after a long term injury to the regular first team keeper and produced a string of excellent performances culminating in a MoM display in the Monkwearmouth Cup Final victory over Cleator Moor. This season Liam who is an excellent shot stopper has staked his claim for the No 1 jersey. He continues to progress and is quickly becoming the top class keeper everyone anticipated he would be.
Michael Arthur – ‘Martha’ joined us in 2012 from Billingham Town as an outfield player but an issue with the then current keeper meant he was drafted into that position temporarily having had several years experience playing in goal previously. He made the position his own and never looked back. Great with both feet as you would expect and a brilliant shot stopper Martha has won the Wearside League golden gloves award on 2 occasions and was an ever present in our Wearside League Campaigns until a hernia kept him out of a large part of 2015/16 season. His ability has sometimes been underestimated playing behind such a dominant team but saving 3 penalties in the Wearside League Cup Final shoot out against Easington in 2015 highlighted what a top quality keeper he is. James Ward - ‘Wardy’ is a product of the youth system at Stockton joining the club as an 7yr old and is a naturally gifted creative footballer with a superb left foot. He surprised everyone after playing mainly in midfield and attacking roles throughout his career so far by excelling in the role of left back for the best part of the last two seasons showing a discipline never seen previously. Jimmy is also a top class cricketer, turning out across the road at Stockton CC in the NEPL Tom Coulthard – Tom is a product of the youth system here at Stockton. He broke through into the first team squad when he was 17 and has been ever present since then. A tough, strong, quick, thoroughbred of a centre half, Tom rarely gets ruffled or loses a challenge aerially or on the floor and has forged an impressive long standing partnership at the back. Tom has a good scoring record for a defender and is also partial to smashing the odd free kick or penalty when called on. Matthew Garbutt – ‘Garbo’ joined us in 2013/14 season from Billingham Town and has been a one of a core of 7 or 8 players who has made a huge contribution to our success in recent years with over 150 appearances. Garbo converted from an attacking midfield player into a right back to help out during 2015/16 season and proved how versatile he was ending up with the Managers and Supporters player of the year awards. Quick with a great touch and a good passer Garbo always makes a contribution to every game especially going forward and is a set piece specialist. Adam Nicholson – Club Captain ‘Adi’ rejoined Town originally to play U18 football after leaving Stockton Town at age 11 to play for the hugely successful N&SA Juniors side. He was soon drafted into the senior squad making his debut in the Teesside League age 16 and now has over 250 appearances for the first team. At 6’5” his strength is in the air but his commitment to the team and desire to win are a major factor in a back four that has been instrumental in the teams success to date. Aside from forging a formidable partnership with Tom, Adam also has an impressive goal scoring record for a defender Alan Cossavella - ‘Cossa’ joined us in 2013 from Billingham Town and brought a huge amount of experience to a young squad after having many successful seasons playing in the Northern League including promotion to Div 1 and reaching the last 8 of the FA Vase with Norton. Alans versatility has been vital to the team in the last few seasons playing both midfield and defensive roles when called upon. Good in the air and quick in the tackle Alan who won supporters player of the year in 2015 excels as a holding midfielder with his work rate and commitment a major factor in providing cover for the backline. Max Craggs – A product of our youth system Max joined the squad in the Wearside League at just 17 and quickly became an important and regular contributor to the success. Max left for Synners late in 2015/16 season returning ‘home’ 8 months later and has picked up just where he left off, scoring and making goals. Max is the complete attacking Midfield player, he has a full range of passing, good vision and is good in the air, added to that he is a dead ball specialist and has an impressive goalscoring record. Joe Posthill - Promoted from the U18s this season Joe is a busy, mobile midfielder, quick with a great touch who always wants to be involved on the ball. A product of the Stockton junior system Joe has interested the local professional clubs and is a great prospect. Joe is someone the club expect to develop into a first team regular in the next couple of seasons.
Meet the Visitors Continued from page 13 Joe Carter – Joe joined us at the start of the 2016/17 Season from Billingham Synthonia where he made over 50 appearances playing mostly as a full back. Joe is a deceptively quick skillful player with a great touch and the ability to go past defenders. Joe regularly chips in with goals and assists and is able to play on either flank or down the middle and has quickly established himself as a regular. Kevin Hayes – Kev is an exciting prospect and has forced his way into the squad this season after a string of impressive performances in the U18s and with appearances for Middlesborough U18′s along with County honours on his CV its easy to see how highly rated he is. Kev is the type of player that spectators want to see on the ball as much as possible a naturally gifted wide attacker/winger who can go past players at very close quarters, coupled with his work rate he’s fast becoming an important part of the team and its taken him just a handful of games to cement a place in the starting 11. Chris Dunwell – Chris joined in 2014/15 season and is a hugely experienced player with several Northern League sides. Chris has overcome a serious injury that kept him out for two seasons. A strong, physical player who after playing centre half for majority of his career is now used in a holding midfield role. Chris Captained Wolviston to their only trophy win the Wearside League Shipowners Cup win a few years ago. Kallum Hannah – Joined us in 2012 having already had Northern League experience. Kallum struggled with a persistent muscle injury for most of the first season. The following 2 years when fully fit he terrorised Wearside defences scoring over 100 goals, collecting the Wearside League Golden Boot Trophy in both seasons. Kallum is currently Stocktons all time leading goal scorer. Strong and quick with a lethal left foot, Kal scores all types of goals including the spectacular, a mark of a top striker. Kallum is another who has played a huge part in the progress of the club in recent years. Sonni Coleman – Tall and quick with a good touch Sonni is a product of Stockton’s junior system and was a prolific goalscorer at Youth level. He earned call up to the England Schoolboys U18’s squad where he produced 2 goals and a man of the match performance against Wales and finished as the leading goal scorer in a Tournament in Northern Ireland. Sonni joined the 1st team squad in 2015/16 season but an operation on an ankle problem restricted his appearances. Sonni is pushing for a regular start now with some crucial goals and performances from the bench this season. Nathan Mulligan – Nathan joins us from Billingham Synthonia having previously played for Marske Utd, Norton & Stockton Ancients and Darlington, Nathan played for Darlington in the Football League. Nathan has many attributes and can play as a forward, wide man and out wide if required. Jamie Owens – Jamie returns to Stockton Town after 6 seasons away. Jamie played all his junior football for the Club and starred for us in our season in the Teesside League winning the Clubs Golden Boot as the seasons leading goalscorer. Jamie has played for Newton Aycliffe, Billingham Town, Norton & Stockton Ancients and Marske Utd where he won the Northern League Division 1 League Title. Jamie Poole - Jamie joins us from Guisborough Town and has previously played for Whitby Town and Blyth Spartans. A left footed versatile player Jamie can play anywhere down the left as well as central midfield and centre back. Jamie's experience will be a vital ingredient to the squad for this season and will have a big part to play for Manager Michael Dunwell. Fred Woodhouse – Fred was a product of the junior system at Stockton but left to play Northern League football after impressing in his first year in the Teesside League. He won the Second Division Title with Newton Aycliffe and was part of the 2015 title winning Marske squad but suffered a broken leg which unfortunately kept him out for almost a full season. A versatile, quick, two footed attacking midfielder who makes and scores goals and is a constant threat to any opposition. Fred returned to his roots at the start of 2016/17 season after a short spell with Bishop Auckland.

This Update by Kath Savage Carlisle United Ladies 2 -1 Penrith AFC Ladies A below par first half performance left Penrith with a mountain to climb. To their credit Penrith did improve in the second have and pulled a goal back through Nat Broad but it wasn't to be Penrith's night.

Penrith Rubies 0-5 Vickerstown Ladies A great effort from a very young Rubies team however the strength and experience of Vickerstown was too much on the night.

Sad news that Kyra Walton will not be returning to football with Penrith after her ACL Reconstruction. She goes to University in the summer and has decided to focus on her first love, hockey. All at Penrith wish Kyra the very best of luck for her future.

When I started on the stats in March, we looked at the teams from 15 th to 22nd and as we look at the table today, for some 51 is a magic number. 5 weeks ago today, Newton Aycliffe had made it to 14th, 10 matches remaining. In ascending order, 15th Seaham Red Star with 12 remaining, 16th Guisborough with 10 remaining, 17th Bishop Auckland with 10 remaining, 18th Ryhope with 15 remaining, 19th the Bonny Blues with 8 remaining, 20th Jarrow Roofing BCA with 12 remaining. For a team to achieve 45 points or 47 points, might be just as good as 51. An easy prediction was Ryhope to be out of the dog fight and I’ve always said Newton Aycliffe had the tools to escape relegation and if Guisborough got just one or two wins, they’d be safe. As the season draws to a close next Saturday, two teams, Red Star and the Roofers will have 3 matches to play. In my opening page, you have seen their results this week and the Bishop’s against Marske, which from the report was played out as a rest for Marske and a draw for the Bishop’s came with elements of time wasting being reported. Three matches away in the league and Newcastle Benfield in the semi-final of the League Cup Thursday 3rd May with Dunston the day before, what a predicament to be in? 24/04/2018 Jarrow Roofing 0 Guisborough Town 2 – Ebac Northern League Division One For almost an hour Guisborough were on top, playing fast, fluid and highly enjoyable football. They deserved their 2-0 lead and they could have had a hatful more.In fact Guisborough striker Steven Roberts could have had a couple of goals in the first 11 minutes alone. He started like a house on fire, with Roofing unable to cope with his pace and the timing of his runs behind the back four. In the opening minute Roofing defender Shaun Vipond had a clearance blocked, the ball fell to Roberts whose first time shot was stopped by keeper Daniel Regan. Seconds later he was put through but his first touch allowed a defender to kick it clear. Then for the third time in the opening five minutes he was within inches of scoring when he got on the end of a long ball and sprinted forward only for Regan to get his fingertips to the ball and take it away from him just as Roberts was about to take it round him and score. And then in the 11th minute he beat the offside trap but chose to shoot rather than lob Regan, with the ball going wide. He finally got the reward for his incisive play in the 15th minute. Mark Robinson crossed the ball from the right, Nathan Steel got a header on target, the ball was only partially cleared, it fell invitingly to Roberts who hit a clean, sweet, first-time shot to put Guisborough ahead.For the rest of the half, Guisborough’s attacks continued to be quick and precise. Roberts and Regan were the centre of the action in the 34th minute again when the Guisborough man was running through on to goal when there was contact with Regan, who was the last line of defence. He was shown a yellow card. It could easily have been red.Three minutes after the break Guisborough made it 2-0 when right back Bradley Mills sent over a cross and Steel got in between a defender and Regan who came off his line but couldn’t get to the ball in time, allowing Steel to head it past him and in. After the first goal, Roofing hung on and just about stabilised the ship and, even though they were second best, they had half a dozen chances to get on the score sheet. In the 7th Dennis Knight saw a shot pushed away for a corner by Guisborough keeper Jordan Nixon and then three minutes later he had a curling shot parried away by Nixon. He had his third attempt in the 26th minute when he was just off target with a free kick.They had two more opportunities before half-time. A John Campbell shot was hacked away in the 33rd minute and then a Paul Gardiner header was tipped over by Nixon. In the 54th minute Campbell had a low, hard free kick well held by the keeper. The game changed in tone around the hour mark. Tackles were flying in and tempers on both sides were rising. Referee Shane Sugden booked Roofing left back Lewis Walton for a foul that in any other circumstance would have been harsh, but it had the desired effect of calming the players down and restraining the tackles that were threatening to turn into confrontations. The downside was that it took some of the edge off the game. For the next 10 minutes there was a lull in the pace of the match. Guisborough in particular seemed to lose some of their focus. That allowed Roofing to have their best phase of the match in the last 15 minutes. They were more successful in taking the game to the visitors, with most of the play in the Guisborough half, without them being able to generate a clear scoring opportunity. Guisborough were a pleasure to watch, while Roofing face a tough couple of weeks to maintain their first division status.
The last chance to add to the score fell to Guisborough. Steel rode a couple of tackles on the edge of the Roofing box, moved the ball to his right foot and tried to lob Regan but hit it over the bar. There was one new arrival at Roofing who didn’t quite make the team sheet for the fixture. Richie and Jan McLoughlin’s new grandson was pictured with the rest of the squad a couple of days ago. His lack of experience may count against him getting a game in their battle against relegation. 26/04/2018 Consett AFC 4 Dunston UTS 2 – Durham Challenge Cup Final Consett are champions of Durham. And it was a convincing win over their fellow Northern League opponents. The game got off to a cracking start, with both teams having a chance to take the lead. In the second minute Michael Mackay was one-on-one with Dunston keeper Niall Harrison who managed to stop the Consett striker’s shot with his legs. The ball spun up and only just went wide of the post. Two minutes later Dunston had an equally good chance when Liam Thear was put through only to see Kyle Hayes block his shot with his legs. But then a three-goal blitz in 13 minutes by Consett left them within touching distance of the trophy, and Dunston struggling to contain them. Dunston fell behind in the 13th minute only seconds after coming within a whisker of scoring themselves. There was a mad scramble in the Consett goalmouth, but no-one could poke the ball into the net. Consett went straight up the other end: Clark Kay delivered a superb ball to Mackay who didn’t have to break stride before running on goal and scoring by lobbing Harrison who had run out to the edge of the box. Six minutes later they doubled their lead. Michael Sweet beat the offside trap, played it back to Mackay who had no defender tracking him and the Consett striker hit a beautiful shot first time, curling it round Harrison who had no chance of stopping it.The Dunston back three were struggling to deal with balls through and over their line and the team as a whole couldn’t get into any sort of rhythm. Consett had far more zip to their play and in the 26th minute they made it 3-0 when Mackay returned the favour by passing it to Sweet who was completely unmarked. He cut the ball back and drove it home. The Tynesiders looked as though they’d been knocked for six, but then, out of the blue, they managed to claw their way back into the game. A counter attack saw captain Dale Burrell take on a defender on the 18-yard line before hitting the gap between Hayes and post to give them a lifeline. But they couldn’t build on the goal and put Consett under any kind of sustained pressure. They had half a chance just before half-time when a free kick found Mark Fitzpatrick in the box; he got a shot away on the turn but pulled it wide.The second half didn’t quite live up to the tempo and drama of the first. The early chances fell once again to Sweet and Mackay. Sweet got his second of the night and Consett’s fourth with a terrible mistake by Harrison. The Consett No.9 tried a speculative shot from wide left and it looked an easy take for the Dunston keeper, only for the ball to go straight under him and into the net. Just like the first half, Dunston managed to peg Consett back with a goal when a ball into the box was only partially cleared by Hayes. The ball landed at Michael Hall’s feet and he lobbed the ball back over the crowded area and in. But just like the first half, Dunston weren’t able to build on the goal and put Consett under any real pressure immediately after the goal. Two minutes into time added on, salt was rubbed in Dunston wounds when Burrell was sent off after a scuffle and confrontation between the sides following a foul.It left Consett only seconds away from victory and the final whistle was the cue for exuberant celebrations. The players had given the Conny Army plenty to sing about during the game and the foot soldiers in the army swamped the team at the final whistle. It was a tremendous win for the club and the town. Footnote: Consett had an extended licence for their clubhouse last night. I suspect there may be the odd sore head in Derwentside this morning.

Juniors Chairman - Karl Collinson Penrith Blues under 9s v Penrith AFC under 10s 22/04/18 After a great game the previous week the Blues started well against a team who had a few more years experience and were a year older. The Blues kept their shape well and didn’t shy away from what was going to be a difficult test for them. They got stuck in with some strong tackles both in defence and across the whole team. They were doing well to soak up the relentless pressure of the older team. Eventually, AFC were just too strong and made the breakthrough with some good goals that came from using the ball well and passing just at the right time. Some excellent finishing that the Blues keeper could do little about. Georgio had to be at his best to prevent more goals, at one point saving three successive shots at point blank range. Outstanding. Penrith AFC played some slick football, with great moves, passing and finishing. It proved too difficult to handle at times despite the brave efforts of the Blues. Ross and Nassim worked tirelessly at the back to try and stop the attacking frenzy. As the second half wore on, the Blues had some good opportunities to score but were just lacking the final pass in front of goal, often opting to shoot when a pass might have been the better option. They could learn a lot from the older team in that respect. The courage and commitment of the Blues was summed up by a fearless tackle from Alex defending a cross and getting his body in the way of the right winger and taking the full force of the ball in the body. AFC are unbeaten this season in an older age group league and so it was inevitable that they would prove too strong for the Blues. However, the Blues put on a tough and gritty display, and should be proud of the way they approached the game with determination to do their best and no fear of the opposition. Despite an offer to borrow some more suitable refereeing footwear from a fellow parent, the ref opted to wear adults shoes. The bright white faithful squash shoes survived him once more but will need a Daz whites machine wash before the next comedy outing. Penrith AFC Under 10s had and away fixture at our Frenchfields home against our younger under 9 team. Having played a friendly on Saturday, the U10's rested 5 players to give others a full 40 minutes. The U9's started well and tightened up the midfield making it tough to play through. It was the U10's that made the breakthrough, with Dylan Campbell scoring his second of the season. He then netted his third not long after the impressive Zane Romano had finished a well worked move.

Report continued from page 26 The last 4 goals of the game were all scored by Man of the Match Olly Newton which included one brilliant bit of skill. A tough game for the younger team but, something that will help them for next season is, that they kept going right to the final whistle. A difficult game to play in for both teams for different reasons but played in a friendly and fair way. Well done everyone. Penrith Panthers v Penrith AFC The two teams met for the second time in a fortnight in a U14 league match at Frenchfield Park. It was an even start as both midfields looked to stamp their authority but it was the 'away' side who almost took the lead when a mix up in the Panthers defence lead to the ball ending up with AFC's striker but he couldn't find a way past Harvey Reay. Panthers were beginning to win their fair share of individual battles with the midfield pairing of Harvey Forster and Owen Tomkinson playing at the top of their games.Panthers should have taken the lead when good football led to Keaton Jackson finding himself in space inside the box where he took a good first touch but dragged his shot just wide. AFC capitalised almost immediately when Finlay Hansford was superbly played in and the young striker finished superbly into the far corner. The teams went into half time separated by the single goal and the game continued to be a tight afair. Henry Thompson and Oliver Metcalfe were looking dangerous for AFC showing quality touches and superb ball distribution but the Panthers back four were on top of their game to mop up any danger. Harry Dinsdale played a great ball down the left onto Forster as Panthers looked for the equaliser, Forster beat a defender, got to the goal line and pulled the ball back but it rolled agonisingly across goal with no one there to pull the trigger. Callum Wills turned well in the box but his shot lacked power and was straight at the AFC keeper. With 5 minutes to go Josh Harrison was played down the right and got a low cross into the box where Keaton Jackson powered into the net with a neat finish to equalise. Once the celebrations had calmed down the referee was urged to speak to the linesman, after a short time a goal kick was awarded as the ball had deemed to have crossed the line. From ecstasy to agony for the Panthers. The last few minutes were end to end but the game finished 1.0 to AFC. A superb game where everyone gave 100% and battled for every ball. Both teams were a credit to Penrith AFC Juniors in the way the game was played and deserve massive credit.
