Dear Residents and Businesses Welcome to your 3rd edition of Lakes Local, my thanks to all those who have helped and many thanks also to those of you who have emailed and called with some really nice feedback. No sooner had we printed the June publication than we were onto putting together the July editionit’s a busy month for the team as we have three publications out this July. We have been busy taking bookings for the Route 66 Eat in and Eat out guide, more details about this are on page 9. Away from sales I’ve been out and about meeting businesses, various groups and local people in addition to coordinating the Eden FM radio summer transmission and future stories for Lakes and Eden Local magazines. Sam enjoyed getting out and coming face to face with deer whilst she was working on the Deer and Dexter article (page 24 & 25) and I enjoyed visiting Peter Sidwell at his studio whilst he was in between cooking and photographing some super food. We are both looking forward to doing a number of features on a regular basis; we share a real common interest in the sourcing of local ingredients. There are more details about Peter and this months recipe on pages 10 – 11. Like our work, with Peter, most of the stories are put together on site. Getting the ground work done for Nick at Monument Locksmiths located in a car park whilst he was busy in his mobile workshop was an experience see the full article on page 14. I attended the Skelton Show committee meeting to discuss the marketing campaign with the Cumbrian Local publications and the live Eden FM radio transmission from the show. As this Lakes Local comes through your door I’ll be out with Keith Wood tracking the whole of the A66, from Scotch Corner to Cockermouth. With so much happening as we go to print with this month’s Lakes Local, we have a breakdown of some of the future stories coming up in the August Lakes Local in the closing Editorial on page 30. Meanwhile, I would like to take this opportunity of thanking you for taking the time to read

your new local publication, which in addition to going through some 5,059 local letter boxes is also gaining new readers every month as a free on line read at www. cumbrianlocal.co.uk

Welcome Home

Hearth & Home (Cumbria) Ltd 6 Brunswick Road, Penrith has traded as a stove showroom for the last 36 yrs with Fraser and Judith Hogg taking over on the 1st December 2010. Hearth & Home is a specialist retailer of Stoves, fires and fireplaces, associated fireside accessories, spares for stoves and fireplaces, flue systems and components as well as quality furniture, ornaments, gifts and household goods. Fraser has been in the heating industry for over 20 years having served his apprenticeship as a plumbing and heating engineer eventually running a team of heating engineers covering both servicing and installation of heating systems, experience which is a real benefit when advising clients on the installation of stoves and fires.

When choosing a stove, the fact is you get what you pay for, at the cheap end of the market the stoves are generally poor quality with a very short life span. At Hearth and Home we have chosen to stick to quality manufacturers whose core business is stove design and manufacture and who have a great deal of experience and produce quality stoves which should give a 20 – 30 year lifespan or even more. Hearth and Home stock within the showroom; stove spares • baffles • grates • door glass and a range of accessories including: paints • cleaners • glues • ropes • cement silicone • polish • thermometers • moisture meters cowls • hods • companion sets • log baskets and logs available for delivery We also keep a wide range of high quality furniture and cast iron goods - door stops, boot jacks, boot scrapes and brushes plus a wide selection of ornaments, pictures, clocks and gifts.

Eden Valley Windows, Penrith Coop and Lakes Local Linked Thinking Home Improvements

Penrith co-op

Something I find myself doing every month, every week, in fact, most days and not just Monday to Friday is to pull up a chair and have one to one discussions with client business owners and directors. For an inside look at how this happens I want share how the relationship with Dale Edmondson of Eden Valley Windows works. I speak to Dale at least twice a week and sometimes up to a dozen times in a single day. Eden Valley Windows are the main sponsor of the Eden Local publication so the working relationship is focussed on ensuring that they get a return on their investment. Eden Valley Windows were the 2nd business to sign up as an advertiser when the magazine was first launched in November 2010. The key strategy in 2011 wasn’t just about advertising windows, but was also about promoting the range of kitchens and the massive showroom in Penrith stocked with kitchens, bedrooms, windows, doors and conservatories, with displays that are constantly changing. So how does it work? Do we discuss windows, look at catalogues, talk strategy? It’s certainly not just about advertising and handing over your hard earned marketing budget to a designer with a free licence to come up with the advert of the century. Although many businesses actually do this. I work with many designers not just our own in house team, but before we go to design we have to ask a number of questions. For effective advertising, there needs to be an effective strategy. Here are some questions

• What is the client advertising? • What should this advert achieve? Awareness? - More people in shop? Business leads?

• What should the reader do when they see the advert? - Visit the client? Phone them? Just be aware of them? • Who is the target customer? Age / lifestyle / interests / income etc

• In one sentence what is the message of this advert? • Are you better than your competitors? What are you doing differently? What’s your unique selling point?

In almost 2 years of working with Dale and his team, we have written articles, co-ordinated events, built a new website, placed advertising in magazines, local press and radio; not just placed ads in Cumbria Local publications. Each campaign needs to have strategically placed advertising linked to the needs and costs of the campaign. Being in just one place can mean just one audience. In the early days of meeting Dale, he was well versed in ’If you always do what you have always done, you’ll always get what you always got’. Things do change, things we don’t always have a control over, events that we may not want but the reality is that as a business we have to do something about it. Whilst we have a plan and a working budget with Dale’s business, we also seek feedback, always work together, always discuss options with the team and then we get down to the business of what we are doing, what needs to be achieved and the costs. Eden Valley Windows is not just about windows, its about home improvements, its about a business that for 27 years has served the Cumbrian community, its residents and businesses. From design to installation; Windows, Doors, Conservatories and Orangeries, all these products come with the support and guarantee of a national organisation; Network Veka. People have been caught out by companies selling 10 and 25 year guarantees but there is something reassuring about an established local business, that will continue to be around during that guarantee period. So what is the plan for the summer at Eden Valley? In addition to the usual seasonal offers, this Summer Eden Valley Windows will be giving away a Kitchen and working in collaboration with the local Penrith Co-operative Society, they’ll kit it out with pots, pans and a full range of kitchen utensils. Has this got your attention?

We are delighted that Peter has become our Cumbrian Local Publications food editor, every month we will be featuring one of Peter’s recipes as well as working together on a range of other projects including our Route 66 Eating guide. We will also be linking our network of local food producers to Peter’s kitchen to give his dishes that seasonal and local edge. We will have reviews of his current and previous “Simply Good” publications and will be drawing on ideas featured in this successful range. In 2007 Peter started writing “Simply Good Taste”, his first book. He published it himself and sold over 4000 copies in the first year. Following that success Simon & Schuster snapped the book up and they released “Simply Good Taste” to a national audience in April 2009. Peter followed up that first book with a bespoke bread machine cookery book “Simply Good Bread” for Panasonic and Carr’s flour. This proved to be a great marketing success for Panasonic. Peter is now busily working on three new books set for publication over the next 2 years; SIMPLY GOOD: PASTA; SIMPLY GOOD: BREAD and SIMPLY GOOD: FAMILY FOOD as well as an E book LakesLocal

“LAKES ON A PLATE” Peter’s first TV series was broadcast on Channel 4 in September 2010, with great reviews it achieved other 1 million viewers per episode. The series has been re broadcast over several different continents. Peter is currently working on his next TV series. Peter also has a long standing relationship with “Lakeland”; home of creative kitchenware, not only were they the core sponsor of his first TV series he has also run several demonstration sessions with senior Lakeland store managers and Directors, showing them how to get the most out of their branded kitchen ware products, these demos are due to be turned into consumer friendly cookery videos for Lakeland’s website, Facebook pages and You tube channel. He then went on to travel around Europe enjoying cooking his way around the continent. The bright lights of the big city were tempting for a while, but having furthered his training on the London restaurant scene, he

decided that he’d like to get back to his roots to work on his passion of baking. Peter joined a local bakery near York for several years, refining his skills and learning how to make great bread and work with pastry. He followed that by moving into corporate catering for an international bank, where his remit included cooking for their private functions, training other chefs and creating food offerings in all sorts of places. Finally, having spent more time in a business suit than in his chef’s whites, he decided to go it alone; a life changing decision and the beginning of Simply Good! With a passion for the local area and for doing as much work locally with food in the community, Peter has recently embarked on a partnership with Rheged working with their restaurant team, to develop a vision to help grow their food offering. Additionally Peter’s time and energy is being focussed on creative food and beverage photography, video and multi platform media in providing custom food photography for restaurants, hotels, food producers and advertising, commercial and editorial applications. Pasta with capers, smoked salmon and sherry vinegar This recipe is a favourite around my dinner table. The smokeyness of the salmon against the sharpness of the capers and sherry vinegar works so well. It’s quick, easy, fresh and tastes fantastic. What more do you want!

Ingredients • • • • • • • • • •

1 pack dried spaghetti pasta 3 tbsp of olive oil 6 slices of local smoked salmon 35g butter salt and freshly ground black pepper 2/3 tbsp of mini capers 2 tbsp of sherry vinegar 1/2 tsp of granulated white sugar 1 handful of flat leaf parsley

Here’s how Cook the pasta in a large pan of salted boiling water for 9-11 minutes. Meanwhile heat a large non stick frying pan. Slice the smoked salmon and add to the pan with a splash of olive oil. Season with a little salt and freshly ground black pepper and cook until crispy. Add in the butter followed by the capers and sherry vinegar, then remove the pan from the heat. When the pasta is cooked pour through a colander. Add the drained pasta to the pan with the smoked salmon and capers. Mix together well with the chopped parsley and serve with a little grated parmesan cheese.

160 years of John Richardson & Son (Part Two)

Lane, Penrith (now known as Brunswick lane) and this business was listed in the 1869 Slaters Directory of Cumberland. Dealing with home grown and imported timber, supplying many local joiners and builders, the joinery side of the business became very successful. In 1895 John and Thomas decided to get involved in funerals, conducting their first funeral in that year, whilst still assisting with the timber and joinery side of the business. The business continued to expand just like a family tree, which just keeps branching out as they also added a building contractors side to the business. From left to right Williams, Mcpherson, Lawes and, Hodgson

Last month we put together the first instalment of the history of one of the oldest family businesses in Penrith, we touched briefly on events that occurred in the year of the company’s foundation back in 1852. Using images that have been carefully stored over the years and original documents with district seals and signatures, in our presentation of part two we will revisit some of the milestones over the first hundred years. My thanks to Donald Richardson, the great grandson of John Richardson, the founder of John Richardson Timber Merchants and Joinery who is pictured here in the centre of this photo on a large sycamore trunk in 1914. Still to this day many customers ask about Donald but many may not realise that this coming November Donald will be celebrating his 105th Birthday! Looking back through town and district documents the business that emerged as John Richardson took over an existing timber merchants formerly William Herring of Great Dockray, all noted in deeds dating back to 1840 held in the family archives. After starting the business in 1852, John Richardson was joined by his son, George Richardson, eventually changing the name of the business to John Richardson & Son. George had thirteen children, however, only three sons; John Richardson, Thomas H Richardson and George W Richardson joined the family business, eventually becoming partners. As the business expanded it set up its premises in Scott

George (Junior) kept to Timber, which meant the collection, cutting, selling and delivering of timber locally with their own horse drawn wagons, the premises then having its own stables. In the early 1900’s the sawmill was run by a fixed coal fired engine. This was eventually replaced with electricity. In those days with the electricity supply so poor in the town, everyone knew when the saw was working as the lights would dim in the other local shops and homes and this was especially noticeable in the winter. In those days you could set your clock to the John Richardson & Sons work bell, which would ring every morning for the start of work, again at lunchtime and finally at the end of working day, it was heard by all across the town. With all of the Richardson & Sons businesses now firmly established, next month we will be looking at the 100 years which followed from the 1900’s and the links to the families in the community over these years.

The trunk of a Sycamore tree which was dispatched by Richardsons from Penrith Railway Station in 1914 and is thought to be one of the biggest piece of wood that has ever left the station. On the left is T.H. Richardson (Father), Donald in the middle and his Uncle G.W. Richardson on his right.

The Key to Success Whilst It is good to be able to advertise a business, it is always more exciting to be in a position where you get to write about the business and share with people what the business is all about, why they do it and how they got started. Cumbria Local publishers have been working with Monument Locksmiths for six months now. I hope that you will enjoy an insight into Monument Locksmiths and the history of how it became what it is today. What is a Locksmith? Well traditionally a ‘smith’ of any type, is one who shapes metal pieces, often using a forge or mould, into useful objects or to be part of a more complex structure. Locksmithing, as its name implies, is the assembly and designing of locks and their respective keys. Locksmithing began as the science and art of making and defeating locks. A lock being the mechanism that secures buildings, cars, rooms, cabinets, objects, or other storage facilities. A key is often used to open a lock. There are various different types of key and various types of locks. The oldest known lock is approximately 4,000 years old and is of an Egyptian make. The earliest known key based lock was built during the Assyrian Empire in Khorsabad near Nineveh around 700 BC. How did Nick become experienced in order to tackle any type of lock, anywhere and at any time of the day? Nick Balcombe, the man behind the mobile business of Monument Locksmiths, has been tinkering with locks and keys since he was 15 years old. I took some time out to discuss where it all began and why. As a lad, Nick was intrigued by locks and the mechanisms. For Nick, it started in 1984 when he started on a Youth Training Scheme working for John Siddle of Sands DIY as it was then. How things change! After his training Nick joined Penrith’s Althams home improvements centre

when it re located from Burrowgate to the Ullswater Road site. He became the supervisor of the ironmongery department and it was whilst in this position he established the in - house locksmith department. Later Nick moved on to manage Buckle and Jones in Carlisle; the shop which stocked every key and lock associated with a building, object or door. He wasn’t able to learn what he needed about car locks in the shop and whilst Nick has attended training courses to acquire the skills, knowledge and certification, the auto lock experience was and still is gained in scrap yards in Nicks own time; now that’s dedication! Cars security has became more complex over the years with the advent of immobilisers and alarms and more recently many locks that were standard push key and turn, have in more than one way become remote. Taking cars and locks apart was valuable experience for Nick when he set up his own mobile locksmiths in 2006. His mobile workshop has the capability of cutting; household keys, mortice keys, padlocks and car keys. He can replace many different type’s of lock. With regards to his auto lock service, Monument Locksmiths carry most keys and chips for auto lock replacement and if it’s not in stock it can generally be sourced within a few days. Founded on Nick’s skills and the 24 hour service that Monument Locksmiths operate, the business continues to grow based on its success and the quality of the work undertaken. A keen business man with a passion for his profession Nick understands the key to his success is not only his 29 years of experience, and a hobby of picking locks (all legal!), but his drive to provide the very best in customer service.

Eden

Lakes & Country

Last month we explored the things that sellers should be thinking about when they’re deciding who to trust to sell their most valued asset, their home.

So, once a property is on the market, the initial leads come from a number of sources – including our websites, ‘for sale’ boards and our buyer database.

There are the visible and tangible things, such as the website, the photography, the brochures, the Eden Local presence and so on. Then there’s the invisible stuff, metaphorically the part of the iceberg that’s under the water.

Personal, email or phone contact with buyers in the market is vital. Everyday we talk to prospective house buyers, spending time to establish what they’re looking for and their buying position. This information has to be maintained by regular contact, as buyers’ needs change, or they find a property to buy. As a buyer, there’s nothing worse than receiving a load of out of date or irrelevant (e)mail from estate agents.

As we saw last time, this includes local knowledge, ‘bigger picture’ advice based on a grasp of the national perspective, a detailed consideration of your personal circumstances and objectives, an honest and realistic evaluation process with a plan for review, the best in marketing materials and a great website presence which gives sellers the best visuals and buyers what they need. The Internet is the No 1 choice for advertising property. Eden recognised this early on and has developed our website to give our clients a marketing package which ranks alongside the best anywhere. We reach housebuyers wherever they are, both inside and outside the UK. This reflects the aspirational nature of our area and our ability to reach those people. LakesLocal

Buyers range from serious cash buyers through to people who turn out to be dreamers and hobbyviewers. In today’s market people are less likely to buy a property on a gut or emotional feeling. Instead, they have a comprehensive list of expectations and wishes, which often are ambitious or elusive. This means it takes a long time for a buyer to really understand what they want. It’s also an opportunity for us. Our housing stock is very diverse and rather individual, so it can take a while for buyers to understand the market. We help in that process by putting ideas in front of them and giving information about housing stock

and local geography. This generates interest, often in properties that they hadn’t even considered or known about. We often say that the sign over our office should say “Estate Agents and Counsellors”, because of the time we spend advising, motivating and informing people. Our objective is to get the right people through the right doors. Someone who came in looking for a period cottage can end up going to look at a contemporary townhouse. The key to this is looking at this through buyers’ eyes – every seller, of course, feels how very saleable their house is! Our role is to create positive and honest impressions to help buyers. This is especially true when dealing with buyers from outside the area. Viewings are the next and most important element of the house sale. A feature of our ‘patch’ is the large area we cover and the distance between places. An estate agent in an urban area would probably find all his properties within a few miles of his office. Our viewings service is a serious commitment of time and money. Our experienced staff offer buyers their knowledge of the individual property, and comparative properties, and knowledge of the location, setting and amenities. It can be a frustrating experience trying to sell the house that you know well and which has great appeal. It can be frustrating to deal with buyers who enthuse on a viewing and then either won’t respond to requests for feedback or say ‘it’s not for us’ without further explanation. It’s no less frustrating as an agent, after all the time and effort put into creating and carrying out each viewing! Following up on viewings and getting feedback for clients is vital, as is ongoing support, advice on pricing and market conditions and giving insight into the comments and behaviour of buyers. It’s a key part of what we do for our clients. There are many sellers who never hear from their agent once their house is on the market – we believe in having frank discussions with our clients on a regular basis. It’s all part of the Eden culture of ‘client first’. Once someone is seriously interested in a property, then comes the offer, or offers if you’re lucky. This is where we can really earn our money. Asking an estate agent who does the negotiations on your house sale can be a very revealing question; you may find that a junior or in experienced person can deal with this vital and responsible step. At Eden all our negotiations are handled by one of our directors.

This is where we finalise our mission to do the best for our client. We often earn our fee literally at this stage, by achieving a sale price above the offers made - the best that can be achieved, and sometimes at a level above expectations. In the current market, timing is vital. Several sellers have missed out on sales because they were too slow to respond to an offer, or insisted on trying to secure too high a price. It’s a buyer’s market and a buyer can easily change their mind. So, sometimes there has to be some frank talking with clients. If you are serious about selling, you have to deal with what is in front of you, the bird in the hand, and that’s where it’s important to factor in the related purchase and the reasons for moving. It requires a wider view, and that’s what we give. As part of the offer process, we confirm the buyer’s ability to finance the purchase and then issue a note of the sale to the parties’ solicitors. The legal process is often laborious and time consuming; we have a member of our team who follows each transaction, monitoring progress. Eden has a unique offering here - our Managing Director is also a Solicitor with extensive experience of the conveyancing process and how to get things moving. Through his involvement with a specialist conveyancing law firm on our doorstep, we arrange the conveyancing for our selling clients. This makes a big difference, a ‘one stop shop’, having clear lines of communication to try and complete the legal process as soon as possible. But, the job’s not over until the contracts are exchanged and then completed. In the intervening period we often have to deal with issues on surveys and assist buyers to conclude the transaction. Our experienced staff, with a lawyer in the business, resolve these on a routine basis. With the sale is completed, sellers’ money in the bank and keys handed over the buyer, we look forward to the reward for our efforts. Remember, for us the process is speculative - we don’t get a penny until the sale completes – but the key difference with Eden is the effort, commitment and passion that goes into making things happen. This makes for happy endings for selling clients and a satisfied buyer who will be our client next time around.

Home Grown Eggs, Straight from the Garden Following on from our feature on local egg production with the Miller family of Penruddock last month, our second article on our trail of the chicken and the egg is looking into some key tips and advice about keeping your own chickens. We also have some top tips from Terry Bowes of Wetheriggs Zoo and Animal Sanctuary. Wetheriggs have about 40 rare and minority breeds of chicken ranging from: the large Jersey Giant down to the smallest Serama; the oldest British varieties like the Derbyshire Redcap and the Red Dorking to the world’s oldest variety, the Appenzeller; the very feathery Cochin to the Transylvanian Naked Neck. Lots of Chickens and varieties and I’m pretty sure Terry likes talking chickens! Terry’s Top Tips are 1. Do your research -but remember your hens may not read the same books as you! . Food: About a quarter of a pound of feed per hen per day. Hanging feeders prevent wastage. Fresh water daily. Hens are omnivores- so bugs are good! 3. Space per hen: 2 square feet in the hen house 4 square feet in the run (more is better). 4. Good ventilation: Helps prevent odour and protects the hen’s lungs. 5. Secure floor from digging predators (including rats). Use carbonaceous bedding. 6. Hens like to roost; make sure they have perches. 7. Face the coop south or as near south as you can. 8. Protection from the weather: 9. Shade in summer and protect from cross-drafts in winter. 10. If you want more eggs in the winter, introduce artificial light and maybe even a little heat. When it comes to free range eggs and barn eggs, there is always debate about the sources and conditions. Something I’ve taken into consideration in my findings and the tips that Terry has presented,

is that chickens should be given the option to move about freely and generally to be able to behave as chickens. The battery style egg production now banned in the EU, which we covered in last month’s article, meant each hen having the space of around the size of an A4 piece of paper in a cage. Compare that to free range, where each hen is allowed the space of around 64 sheets of paper. This is just one example of the different standards of husbandry; there are many more. Free range allows chickens to be chickens and we hope natural creatures of habit. Hens are flocking birds, they tend to stick together. I’ve seen hens in gardens they tend to move around staying quite close together. Sometimes a bigger the flock can mean that the area around the shed becomes stripped of vegetation and can become a dustbowl in warm weather. Free range hens may have the benefits, but sometimes they don’t always take up the full distance between their shed and the perimeter fence, taking full advantage of their undoubtedly better conditions. Next month, in our last chapter on egg production, we will be discussing the final link in the chain - the packaging and distribution of local eggs.

The Cocklakes pork is sourced from a local breeder and the bacon

When you cook it, it tastes like bacon - it cooks and smells like bacon. No water - just cooking in its own juices. The beef has been grass fed and hung on the bone for 21 days. It is so tender, you can cut it with a butter knife and then there is the lamb that has been fed on sweet parsnips. It not only tastes real, it tastes like it hasn’t been messed about with. Unique products in a unique food chain, Cocklakes has products that are not always available in other outlets. It has just introduced the new range of Buttermere Ayrshire’s luxury ice cream in 7 different flavours,

Quality Barbecue Packs born from traditional to creative, which is exclusive to Cocklakes. There are many other products sourced like Borrowdale honey, Little Salkeld flour, local beers, Kirkby Stephen preserves and marmalades and the Ruby Relishes unique range of jams and chutney’s from Appleby. There is only one catch and that depends on how things are with the trout fishing on the day. Relax with a breakfast, light lunch, or afternoon tea. Take some time out to shop or fish. It doesn’t get much better and it’s a taste you can take away.

Walking with Keith Wood

Dalemain and Dacre Given that so many events have been recently held at the historic house of Dalemain I thought it would be good to go for a walk over the estate. Home to the Hasell family since 1679 Dalemain has a friendly and homely feel and the tranquility of the well-maintained gardens are in stark contrast to the honey pot of nearby Pooley Bridge. The walk up to Dacre passing by Dacre Castle coupled with a visit to Dalemain and its gardens makes a great day out for all ages. 3. The road passes by Soulands Gate farm buildings on the left. Whilst this is a quiet road be alert to any traffic and keep to the right hand side of the road. As the road starts to descend there is a fine view across to Arthurs Pike and Bonscale Pike.

1. Starting from the Dalemain Estate Car Park, walk through the outbuildings around the back of the house into the courtyard. Bear around to the right over the cobbles onto the lane between two walls. The lane heads up to the village of Dacre. Dacre Beck is below on the left. Pass through a gate into the next large field, keeping to the right hand field boundary. Pass through another gate and the track swings around to the right up towards the village. As the track gently rises pass by several farm buildings and then the impressive Dacre Castle, a fourteenth century sandstone walled pele tower, part of the Dalemain estate since 1723. . The track emerges onto the road in the middle of Dacre village, before continuing take a detour to visit the churchyard and the famous Dacre Bears. Turn left and head down the quiet road to the valley bottom and Dacre Beck. Cross the beck, pass a picnic area and continue heading up the hill towards Souland Gate. Pass by the Old Vicarage, an impressive house on the left and continue on this quiet lane over the brow of the hill.

4. The road reaches the busy A592 Penrith to Pooley Bridge road, at the junction a Pubic Footpath sign leads to a path through a red sandstone stile. Go over the style to pick up the footpath taking you through the fields over Flusco Hill and West Park and back to Dalemain. 5. As there is no access across the front of the house, a short walk along the road is necessary. At the bottom of the last field before reaching Dalemain cross over a wooden stile next to an iron gate and onto the road. Turn left, crossing over the ornamental bridge over Dacre Beck and walk next to the road for a hundred yards in front of the house. All that remains is to head back up the drive to return to the Estate Car Park. Full details of the route with map and photographs are in Keith’s “ Boot up Ullswater”, which can be found in many local outlets including Penrith Outdoor Pursuits, the usual internet bookshops or directly from the author at: www.keithwoodphotography.co.uk

Castle Crag Peaks and Pathways by Nick Wells

about sixty yards in diameter and a perfect natural stronghold. It is said a fort once occupied this area and can still be seen in places.

Castle Crag stands in the middle of Borrowdale Valley about four miles south of Keswick. If a visitor to Lakeland has only two or three hours to spare, poor fellow, yet desperately wants to reach a summit and take back an enduring memory of the beauty and atmosphere of the district, let he or she climb Castle Crag. Parking up in the small village of Grange can be difficult, so you need to get lucky. Take the narrow road left opposite the church and continue passing various campsites until you reach the river Derwent, take the path branching away from the river and head up towards the foot of LakesLocal

Castle Crag. Here the path either goes immediately up the Crag or continues up and along Borrowdale, from here to the summit is very steep but not too far. Evidences of former quarrying operations surround the trail as it zig-zags its way to the main quarry near the summit. Here an almost spooky presence is felt, as hundreds of figures made from a mass of negleted slates are randomly placed. No-one knows who builds them or why, aparently they get cleared away from time to time only to reappear shortly afterwards. The summit, a short walk out of the quarry is circular in plan,

The view from here to the north looks down the full length of Derwent Water, beyond is Keswick with Skiddaw behind. To the south shows a beautiful flatland of about one square mile surrounded by low crags, with the road leading through Rossthwaite and on towards Seathwaite. Heading back by the same way to the foot of Castle crag, one can take the path left which can lead directly around the crag to enjoy a riverside walk back to Grange. This walk is about three miles long, or longer if you go around the Crag, and will take as long as you want.

The Wainwright Society’s annual Charity Challenge raises £2000 for Cumbria Wildlife Trust Sixty years ago, Alfred Wainwright wrote the first page of what was to become the iconic Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells. And these guidebooks are as popular as ever, having been revised and updated by Chris Jesty in the past few years. Wainwright went on to produce over 50 books during the next forty years. Three of those books have been the subject of The Wainwright Society annual Charity Challenge, The 6050-40 Challenge. During three weeks in May, Society members have been climbing to the summits of the fells described in The Eastern Fells, The Northern Fells and all the walks in The Howgill Fells. Money raised by donation and sponsorship has totalled £2000, and on the final day of the Challenge, members of the Society met with representatives of Cumbria Wildlife Trust to hand over the first instalment of money being raised by the Society in support of the Uplands for Juniper project. With 10:1 matched funding from a landfill tax scheme, this sum will raise £20,000 for the project. The Lake District has more extensive stands of juniper than anywhere else in England. Sadly, a decline in the use and management of juniper in recent years, coupled with reduced seed production of older plants and overgrazing of young saplings has taken its toll

on the viability of juniper to continue to flourish in its natural habitat. The Uplands for Juniper project aims to survey the 231 identified juniper sites in order to establish the condition and extent of juniper. Following the survey practical steps will be taken to improve the condition of existing juniper sites, expand juniper woodland sites and create new stands through planting locally sourced saplings. The Society cheque was presented to Susan Garnett, member of Cumbria Wildlife Trust and Chair of the Sedbergh Local Support Group. Susan has a Wainwright connection as it was her Uncle Harry (Henry Marshall) who published Wainwright’s first five guidebooks. Henry Marshall was County Librarian at Kendal for around 25 years. As a teenager, during her school holidays, Susan remembers packing up orders of Wainwright’s books with her cousins at her uncle’s house in Kentmere. Deer ’n Dexter by Sam Eggleston

I was heading for my meeting with Jane and Peter at Old Stoddah Farm near Penruddock when I turned left off the A66 on to a beautiful country road heading down hill surrounded by the most beautiful views of the Lake Districts Northern Fells. Hidden in a quiet valley Jane and Peter run their business Deer ‘n’ Dexter. They provide high quality red meat from their herd of 300 Red Deer and 135 Dexter cattle hence the name. I have visited quite a few farms over the years including vast sheep farms in both Canada and Australia but have never seen deer being farmed so this was going to be a first. Commercial deer farms really started about 40 years ago in the UK and New Zealand. 1,500,000 deer annually are now farmed in the NZ and 35,000 in the UK.

to the demand of both meats once they started selling at local farmers markets.

Peter and Jane are both self taught farmers and the business has evolved from a starting point of needing something to graze the land of 90 acre farm they had just acquired back in 1990 and they wanted animals that were a bit different so ventured into deer farming. After foot and mouth they looked at some alternative and that’s when the Dexter cattle arrived. Jane told me that the development of the meat retailing side of the business hadn’t been a planned thing it just evolved due

In the main I spent my time with the deer and I had the most amazing experience. As we approached the large 6ft 6” gate Jane called ‘Hi Boy’s’ and they all turned and headed slowly towards us, most of the herd were a little curious but all are shy –all but one who wanted me to fuss over him like you would a dog and who gave a little nudge to remind me that to stroke him was ok. He decided I was his new best friend, but don’t get complacent as deer can be very dangerous their antlers are

a weapon, but I was in safe hands. All the deer really did seem content in their home with acres of nurtured land to roam. The popularity of venison grew dramatically last year and just last month Scotland Food and Drink reported that they were struggling to keep up with the demand which between 2006 – 2009 grew by 34% from £34m to £42m in the UK. The shortfall is being imported mainly from New Zealand with an estimated increase of 25,000 farmed deer annually required to meet the ever growing demand. Why you may ask – well have you tried Venison lately? Farmed Venison doesn’t carry the strong flavour that wild venison can, it is much more subtle and a very healthy, economical meat. Jane explained to me that the meat is so lean that if you where eating a steak, for example, then a 6oz venison steak would be the equivalent to an 8oz beef steak as there is virtually no fat. The Dexter is a traditional breed which has more fat “marbling”, than you find in a supermarket type of beef. The colour is a little darker, for two reasons; due to the breed and because it is properly hung for 3 weeks to produce a tender and better flavoured meat. Like Venison the popularity of this tasty Beef is

growing, with over 4,100 Dexter cows registered last year by the Dexter Cattle Society in the U.K. - double the figure for 2000. Jane and Peter are supported by a team of six on the farm and in the meat business, including their own resident butcher Gordon Clark whom many of you will know from his years of trading on the Penrith high street. Deer ‘n Dexter really do provide the full locally sourced, low mileage, healthy and tasty food solution. Not only do they rear the meat they sell

but also have their own butchery and packing facility on site and then the meat is sold direct to you the customer through local farmers’ markets & food events (see list), by mail order and their venison is available from Carlton Farm Shop in Penrith and Low Sizergh Farm Shop near Kendal. 87.7 FM from 17th June 2012

The Transition to Transmission at Eden FM Radio, We’re Back By Lee Quinn, Chairman Eden FM Radio

It is with great pleasure and appreciation that I can confirm our local Co-op, the Penrith Co-operative Society has agreed to become the station sponsor of Eden FM Community Radio. It marks the culmination of a two year campaign, which has received much support from the community it serves and that continues to grow in support. Our thanks to our new sponsor and on behalf of the Eden FM Radio team of volunteers, we look forward to a new chapter and even stronger links with a truly local brand and business, an institution which has served the community for over 122 years. It’s hard to imagine that it was 2 years ago the project actually started for Eden FM. On 9th June 2010, the first correspondence was sent to Ofcom, in line with Ofcom policy to register an expression of interest for Penrith and the surrounding areas. What is an expression of interest? Source - http://consumers.ofcom.org.uk/2010/04/ community-radio-the-next-phase An ‘expression of interest’ should include: the name of your organisation the area you wish to broadcast to (or location of the service) LakesLocal

phone: 01768 899111

www.lakeslocal.co.uk

a short description of the community you wish to serve your contact details These ‘expressions of interest’ will help Ofcom plan how to proceed with the next phase of community radio development (end source) Not all areas of the UK will be open to applications. Much of this is down to band width availability. Two years on and after many press releases via Eden Local (our sister publication based around Penrith) and campaigning for Eden FM radio to be the voice and the choice of the community, there is not much time left before we will be submitting our full time application. The Ofcom window for community radio applications for Cumbria to be submitted is scheduled for the second half of 2012. We anticipate this announcement to be posted in late June on the Ofcom website. http://licensing.ofcom.org.uk/radio-broadcastlicensing/community-radio/apply-for-licence/timetable We will then have three months in which to complete the application process and then we wait. Subject to the volume of applications, our track record and the support we have, which all has to be submitted with the application, we should then find out between October and December 2012 whether the dream and a 2 ½ year campaign have been successful.

For the team of volunteers at Eden FM Radio, based at its station premises in the Cumbria Mini Centre, Ullswater Road Garage Penrith, it’s a tremendously busy time. To recap for those who may have missed the previous update, on Friday 25th November 2011, Eden FM Radio transmitted on the 87.7 FM frequency for the first time, with a 28 day trial transmission. Permitted only one transmission on FM once every 5 months with a maximum of 28 days RSL (Restricted Services License), the gap was too great to build on the momentum of its first transmission when it switched off on 22nd December 2011. The radio silence between transmissions was viewed by the team and from the emails received from listeners as too long for its growing listening audience to wait. From early January 2012, Eden FM Radio became a fully licensed internet radio station. Whilst on air over the last six months, key volunteers of the team, Andy, Sian, Martin and Steve have volunteered much time in the rebuilt Eden FM studio one and they have created a studio two, as a secondary back up studio, which is also a production suite.

underway. The list is extensive, but here are those local businesses and local groups that we have to thank for getting us to our two year celebration - Eden Valley Windows, Eden District Council, Carleton Driving School, Cumberland Building Society, Cumbria Mini Centre, Love Solar, Eden Estate Agents, Penrith Lottery, H & H Reeds, CA Business, the Skelton Show Committee, Bluefin Insurance, Penrith cooperative society, Andrew Briscoe Cleaning, Penrith Outdoor Pursuits, Full Circle Accountancy, D & H Auto Care, Quinn HR, the Red Rooster, Lakeland Sheds, Jim Walton, Hearth & Home, Gem Den, Enterprise Car Hire, Eden Taxis, Spice Club, Atkinson Driver Training and Brunswick Deli. I don’t think we have missed anybody but I do know that by the time this article goes to press, there will be more. As we approach the end of June, Eden FM radio will be midway through its second community trial 28 day radio license. The full listing of programmes is now on our website at www.edenfm. co.uk. Also on the website are

presenter profiles, our summer listing of roadshows and outside broadcasts. Recently the radio vehicle has been in Penrith supporting the Penrith Lions May Day, we were at the Langwathby May Fair, over the Jubilee weekend the team was at Kirkby Stephen Summer Fair. These are events prior to the live transmission. At the time of writing this article we are ambitiously aiming to achieve live shows from Penrith Golf Centre and Driving Range on the morning of 17th June, then in the afternoon it’s off to Greystoke to the Boot and Shoe to cover some live music. On 20th June, we will be live with the Olympic Torch in Penrith and reporting the events as they happen from Appleby and Brough on the day. With other outside broadcasts to confirm, we aim to be live at the Skelton Show on 7th July, then live from the Langwathby Scarecrow Festival on 14th July. It’s a busy schedule for a very busy team of volunteers. We do need more help and more volunteers. If you want to be a volunteer at Eden FM, please email us at admin@edenfm.co.uk

It was 8 months ago that we celebrated the first transmission. The transition to our next FM broadcast transmission, which is now scheduled to commence 00.00 hrs on Sunday 17th June to 14th July 2012, is attributed to seasoned support and continual support from the community. On behalf of the Eden FM Radio team, we would like to thank Ullswater Road Garage, who without foresight for the project, it would not have got off the ground and Eden Valley Websites for past, current and future work now

Eden At the start of the year Cumbria Local Publications started work on a new project. The aim of the project was to create an online local directory that was more community focussed and more than just simply an on online directory. We started the directory predominately in the CA11 postcode. Advertised as a directory for local businesses where users could search for a local trade, or any type of business which is close to where they live, means that the search is generally by post code. For those businesses signing up to the directory, they know that if they are a business that involves travel, they could be doing far fewer miles, reducing their costs, allowing them to fit in more work and be working nearer to home. As an annual business directory what will make your CA Business – Lakes Directory different from other directories? • CA Business is not just an online directory • CA Business is also printed as a full colour Directory, with no extra charges for colour • CA Business is delivered by Royal Mail Door to Door across two key postcodes in the North Lakes region • CA Business is managed locally here in Cumbria, with an associate local business With CA Business you get a full page on the website and you can change it and update it throughout the year What else makes your CA Business special? • The CA Business printed directory will be delivered to approximately 12,618 doors • It will be delivered to all business and residential addresses in CA12 and CA13 • The CA Business Directory subscription starts at £99 per year; that’s just 27p a day Every time a business signs up for a CA business subscription 20% is donated back into community projects; for this year’s Eden Valley directory, a proportion goes to the Eden FM community radio LakesLocal

project and the campaign for an Eden Valley Dyslexia Association In 2013 your local community based CA Business will be choosing a range of local projects to support There is one simple add on; The Lakes Local 3 way 360 package for 99p a day • You get all of the above, printed and online package • You get to advertise in the CA Business Classified section of the Lakes Local monthly publication • You get to advertise on the CA Business Classified ads on Eden FM Radio 365 days of the year • Advertise daily, monthly and weekly across your community for just 99p a day Our Lakes 2013 printed directory will go through the doors of all businesses and homes in postcodes CA12 and CA13, approximately 12,600 letterboxes however, as a business working across Cumbria you can also advertise in the Eden Valley and Border City printed directories, which are distributed to approximately an additional 38,000 doors. In the CA postcodes there are 8,919 businesses known to the Royal Mail door to door delivery service. But in addition; how many other people in the CA postcodes, run their business from home? In total the various local CA printed directories will be delivered through doors in CA1 1, CA1 2, CA2 3, CA3 8, CA4 0, CA4 9, all of CA10, CA11, CA12, CA13, CA16 and CA17 totalling approximately 50,500 letter boxes out of the total of 157,303 known addresses in the full CA postcode area. And Finally...... Thank you again for reading this month’s Lakes Local. In next month’s Lakes Local will be finishing our three part story on Egg production with an interview with David Brass from The Lakes Free Range Egg Company. We’ll have a full update about your local co-op and its quest to source local produce and I also hope to be getting behind the scenes of a local brewery. Following on from the Plant Fair at Dalemain I hope to bring a full story on the event and the production of local honey. We’ll be covering the next part of the 160 year history of Richardson and Son and by then the Route 66 Eat in and Eat out guide will be available from 150 outlets across Cumbria. As my to do list grows the 6 monthly update of the www.cumbrianlocal. co.uk website will be taking place and as a reminder to local businesses

please remember that the Cumbrian Local publications is just a part of what we do as a team. We help many local businesses access their marketing budgets and help this stretch further delivering more for less. And finally, in case you missed it on pages 3 – 30 it costs less than £10 to advertise your business or your event in colour in your Lakes Local, which puts your name through 5059 doors. We do like to support and promote local events, if you are a charity, a community group or organisation and need to promote your event let us know, drop me a line to lee@lakeslocal. co.uk.
