Keswick your local store It’s a co-op concept from your local independent co-operative. First a simple statement, to give you an idea and direction of what your local co-op is working towards. Your local co-ops in Penrith, Lazonby, Keswick and Shap are all a part of the Penrith co-operative Society, which first set out its stall, so to speak, in 1890. How can you tell the difference between your local co-op and the larger co-op group? Well it’s not always easy. Both stock co-operative branded products. Identifying the difference is something we are now working on. Your independent, local co-op will stock locally sourced products and over the remainder of 2012, will be seeking out even more local products as we intend to be a hub of locally sourced low mileage foods.

and sharing the logistics is better for everybody. Savings made all round which means; quality products, locally sourced and sold at a fair local price. It’s a clear difference in your local co-operative and each month we will be promoting our local range as new products are introduced. Your local co-op is striving to keep Cumbrian food and Cumbrian products close to home. You can help. If you are a local producer of a local product and would like to discuss working with your local Penrith co-operative society please call us on 01768 862366 or email lee@penrithco-operative.co.uk.

We are currently working with local producers offering them direct help and support. We are offering them fair prices, not under cutting them, reducing our carbon footprint, helping the farmers and local producers reduce the carbon footprint of local food and Cumbrian produced products. Fewer vehicles on the road

If you know of a local producer who you think should be working with your local co-operative or you have an idea about what you would like to see in your local co-op please call us on the above number or drop us a line at the email above. Dear Residents and Businesses Welcome to the second edition of Lakes Local. I will start by saying a big thank for all your positive feedback, which has led to a number of meetings in and around the Keswick area. Looking at the statistics of our online readership, even with the CA12 area receiving the publication through doors via Royal Mail, which is around 5,055, based on our Royal Mail door to door data, what we hadn’t predicted was the increase in so many people reading the publication free on line. In the first week of distribution, it was almost five times that of Eden Local, which was distributed in the same week through residential and business doors across the Eden Valley in postcodes CA 4, CA10, CA11 and CA16 via the same delivery method to 18,089 letterboxes.

and commercial market place. It’s something that we have been following now for over a year. As posted in last month’s Lakes Local, we are continuing with our awareness and drive to encourage people to shop local and think local. We have an update this month, but more to follow on this in the July issue.

Following on from last month’s publication, we are now laying the foundations for future articles. In this month’s publication there is more information about advertising and localised marketing campaigns that the Cumbrian Local publications currently offer. Importantly, we look at what Lakes Local could potentially do for your business, club, association, voluntary group or event.

Lee Quinn, Editor

One message is clear. As a new letterbox appears or an empty property or business unit is occupied, a Lakes Local will go through their door. This month our distribution is up to 5,059. Pointers on distribution and services are on page 12 & 13. Something which Royal Mail has recently been pushing is this slogan459 TV Channels, 728 Radio Stations, 55 Million Websites or One Letterbox. We have the first of our farming and local producer articles this month. We have started with egg producers with our feature on the Miller family from Penruddock. Next month, it’s chickens and the feature will be carried over 3 issues. Something we have been doing as a publication since the first Cumbrian Local was distributed, is working closely with local, established businesses. Some of these are family run and some have been running for over a century. These businesses are dotted around Cumbria, are heaped in history and deliver a wonderful snapshot of time and progression. This month we start a journey with Richardson and Sons of Penrith, who celebrate 160 years this year. Putting together family business related articles requires a considerable investment in time, looking at old data, old photos and sifting through boxes and paperwork that may not have seen daylight for over 100 years. It is quite a challenge, but such a pleasure and as someone writing these stories, it’s an honour to have been trusted with a family’s history. On a more current note, we have a reminder this month about the immediate changes to tariffs in Solar and how it will probably affect the domestic

John Richardson & Son 1852 - 2012

Quality Timber Suppliers • Home Improvement Centre www.johnrichardsonandson-timber.co.uk

It began in 1852 This is the introduction to a story about a business and a family. Like the old photos and box of historical documents I was just recently passed, it signified the handing down of a prize possession that has passed through many hands for generations. An illustration of how the business began to where it is now. Over the future months we’ll cover the full story and then present the plan for the future to continue this successful local enterprise, all of which has made the name John Richardson & Son synonymous with Timber, Joinery, Funerals and building work in the local area; an institution as well as a long standing Cumbrian business. Over the last few months I have had a number of discussions LakesLocal

with the current Richardson’s team. More recently Eden Local was invited in behind the well known big green metal gates of the Roper Street main entrance to John Richardson & Son Timber Merchants. Where the shop that caters for so many of your needs in; timber, flooring, decorating, hardware and much more. timber yard. The ground floor contains the decorating section, which also includes timber treatments and varnishes and the hardware section, with a wide variety of locks, latches, bolts, hinges and handles. On the same floor there is also a range of doors and wood flooring displays. On the second floor there is the Kitchen showroom, offering anything from affordable finishes to the finest quality of timber available. Bespoke is the word that we will be using time and again over the next few months to describe the work on offer.

The business at Roper Street, with free parking is set on two floors with a large timber storage and cutting area and an extensive

always be sitting on the shelf but just ask one of the friendly and knowledgeable staff and they’ll be able to get it in for you. John Richardson and Son’s business for many years hasn’t been just selling timber it’s been about designing bespoke timber products from doors to floors, staircases, windows, fencing, decking, timber frames for buildings, roof trusses and loft conversations, yes too many to list! Following several meetings with the team, who is based at the company’s Timber Merchants Retails and Trade site, we have been planning the year to celebrate 160 years of successful service to the local community. Beyond the anniversary, in this year of so many national celebrations and events, in addition to the marketing and advertising of the current John Richardson & Son business, work has commenced on planning for the future development of the business to continue serving our community for many more generations to come. The image shows five or more shire horses pulling timber from the woodlands to the timber yard that was in Scott Lane (now known as Brunswick Road) and the site of Morrison Supermarket; one of the activities from the start of the business back in 1852. In the same year, elsewhere in the country, the first ever public toilets were opened in Fleet Street London, the first patient of Great Ormond St Hospital for Sick Children, London was admitted and HM Prison Holloway was opened as a mixed prison, known then as Holloway Castle. Amongst other historical moments from this year outside of the country; a man by the name of John Harvey Kellogg, surgeon, was to inspire the flaked cereal industry

and F.W Woolworth, US founder of the ‘Woolworth’ stores was born in the spring of this year. Something of almost spooky coincidence in this same year a man by the name of John Richardson, Canadian born writer died. Back home the Victoria and Albert Museum was founded; the world’s largest museum of decorative arts and design. Across the border in Scotland Prince Albert bought Balmoral Castle and Estate for Queen Victoria in the same year. Was there a Royal visit to tour local area at this time? Even closer to home William Burra Arnison having served his articles with Atkinson and Harrison Solicitors, Penrith was admitted to the roll in 1852 and at once commenced practice in Penrith on his own account.

There are many questions to be asked and gaps of knowledge to be filled and we would like help with the gathering of as much about the history of John Richardson and Sons as is possible. In this year of celebration, we want to really cover its history with your help. If you have any information or recollections about the company, perhaps you had a relative that worked there, then we would love to hear from you, give us a call on 01768 862366 or email lee@ edenlocal.co.uk . In the early autumn there will be an open weekend at the site in Roper Road and an Exhibition staged in Penrith tracking the history from 1852 to 2012. Details about all the anniversary events will be posted in Cumbrian Local publications and local press. We want you to remember this year as a year you re- discover one of the oldest

Going to the Eggstream

This month, I have been on the trail once again to catch up with a local farmer and local producer. Whilst we have previously visited two separate locations for this regular article, this month we have put these two concepts together. It was a wind swept day in early April when I met up with Hazel Miller to discuss eggs and her family farm, which she runs with her husband Garry and hands on family of four children. Their main focus is free range eggs. Like many farms, they were knee deep in lambing and they also had a pig with a 12 week old litter.

Laying Hens” Directive made the production of 30 per cent of European egg producers illegal. The Directive bans the use of battery cages for hens and requires at least 750 square centimetres of cage space per hen. Filie Van Bosstreten, the Secretary General of the European Egg Processors Association, thoughts were very much along the lines of, that some European producers, especially medium and small, will completely stop producing eggs.

Why eggs this month? Well, the reason why I was there and chose egg production, was born out of a previous conversation the month before. I was talking cakes with Maggie in the bakery at Sandgate and Maggie explained the price of eggs had risen sharply. With eggs being a key ingredient of many of their products both in the bakery and at Eden House of Cakes, this would mean a rise in cake prices, so I wanted to find out more.

His point is that the EU wants all chicken farms to have so-called “enriched cages,” in which hens are no longer confined to small spaces, and can move around. But farmers say, in his opinion, it is a lot more work and hens tend to excrete waste everywhere. They would also have to train hens to lay eggs in a special nest, another difficult task. I have researched close to a dozen websites covering Eastern and Western Europe and picked up on media spins as well as some key farming association opinions.

I will be presenting many behind the scenes snippets from my meetings with the Miller family which will, I hope give you an idea of what ‘going to work on an egg’ is really all about, but before we look at the producer on our doorstep, I researched outside of Cumbria onto the worldwide web into why the rise had happened in the price of eggs. I discovered much more than, which came first in our chicken and the egg story, which will run, as they do, for more than just a month. There has been much debate about it in the national news and across the European Union. The announcement made from 1st January 2012, meant that the “Welfare of

There have been and there will be more debates surrounding animal welfare, not just with chickens, but the impact of this change in Europe is one of massive adjustment and change. In the UK, an estimated 400 million has been spent on compliance of the new regulations, however, at the start of the year there were 13 EU countries not meeting the new Directive. France and Belgium were struggling to ‘have their cake and eat it’ as French bakeries protested on the increase of eggs in price due to shortages. From our research, the EU issued the Directive in 1999, requiring member states to phase out the use of small

place. As with any commodity, the prices can be variable but the reality is the price that farmers are getting at present, is around 14p per dozen but feed prices have risen during 2012 by £70 a tonne. The suggested price by the BFREPA is nearer 20p per dozen.

cages for hens at factory farms. Producers were given until the start of this year to switch to “enriched” cages offering chickens more space, bedding and perches. There are 28,000 egg producers in the EU, around 200 major packing stations (wholesalers) or traders and about 100 egg processors. With battery eggs banned, this has created an egg shortage driving up the price. So how does this leave us in the UK and how will it affect Cumbria? On average, consumers across the EU had to pay 76.5% more for eggs at the end of March, compared with a year earlier, according to EU figures. At the time of writing this article at Easter, there is an egg shortage across Europe, there are pending hose pipe bans commencing in the south and we have snow! Staggeringly, almost 11 billion eggs are consumed in the UK every year. Over 85 per cent of these are produced domestically, with the nation’s 29 million laying hens each laying an average of 314 eggs per year – nearly one per day (British Egg Information Service, website, 2011). However, in a recent report, John Retson, Chairman of the British Free Range Egg Producers’ Association (BFREPA), has called for an increase in the prices paid to egg producers, following reports that some major retailers have been hit by supply shortages. At the close of 2011, the BFREPA predicted a reduction of 12 % in the commercial, free range layers which equates to 2,000,000 layers. The reason behind this is not the change in EU legislation but the problem that egg producers face with the price of eggs in the market

So we have the shortages, due to the EU directive in the week, but the real stinger is the feed rise in price. It’s a global problem coming home to roost here in Cumbria. The price of wheat globally has hit its highest price since September 2007. One of these causes relates to crop failure in the Black Sea region of Russia and the Ukriane. The global shortage coupled with a weak pound, has boosted UK wheat sales overseas. Normally, UK wheat is exported to Europe and North Africa but it is going as far as Thailand and Vietnam. In the domestic market, with higher demands in the production of bio fuels, it’s another hit in a volatile market. So taking all this in to consideration with EU Directives and global wheat markets affecting driving up the price of feed, how does this affect our local producer? Can you help? Buying local, using your local farm shop is all that you need to do. Here is why…… On the shelf at the supermarket this week (7th April 2012) for a half a dozen free range medium eggs, the price is from around £1.70 - that’s 28.3p each. Let’s hold that thought for a moment. This price is calculated from 5 supermarkets online. On the shelf at your local shop, for example Jackson’s Family Butchers, Carleton Farm Shop, Cocklakes Farm Shop, our independent greengrocers ‘Starfruits’ online and your local Penrith Co-operative Society, in Eden, the prices at the time of writing this article were averaging around £1.17. As I write this article, new prices which reflect rises for the following week are already prepared. In the next few weeks there could be more. When this article is in your hand, we could be seeing prices up as much as 15-30p more per half dozen. For current egg prices this is a good link www.theranger.co.uk/eggprices.asp Towards the end of our series on local egg production, we will be looking at egg packing and wholesale, but one clear message here is if you take the mileage out

Chick, chick, chick, chick, chicken lay a little egg for me... The Eglu Go is the simple, stylish, straightforward way to start keeping chickens. It is designed to keep up to four medium chickens and they will be very happy and healthy in their new home. Unit 6 milestone House Penrith Tel: 01768 840378 LakesLocal

of food, it can make a difference. It will make a big difference locally in our economy. So finally, we get to our local family on the farm. It was in 2009 that Hazel and Garry made the investment into to being an egg producer under the Freedom food banner, which is a standard monitored by the RSPCA, applied through a higher welfare food labelling and farm assurance scheme. Like many Cumbria farms and this trend across many families, it’s a balance of shifts and at the peak of lambing, the egg production can’t just be put on hold. It’s a family business. After many years working in Hazels mam’s B & B, it was a total change to be involved with 6,000 Shaver hens! Garry, a plumber by trade, still works at least 3 days a week plumbing. The Miller family, like all egg producers, have been hit with the feed prices. I sat around the table with Hazel discussing what could possibly come next. Their feed comes in 18 ½ tonne loads. The price in 2009 was around £200, so the average £70 increase per tonne this year is a direct hit in poultry farming, but it will impact many businesses, not just the Miller’s family business, hence where our article began at Maggie’s Bakery. I also spoke to Simon, the factory manager at Highgate Turkey’s, who as a local poultry producer, is also seriously affected. It’s something I have mentioned on many occasions when discussing the work involved behind the scenes. Yes the Miller family at Penruddock chose this profession and many may ask the question why. Why every day, even with the best automated system for collecting eggs, would anyone then pack in trays an average of 6,000 eggs a day? I visited on a day when it was snowing. Then two days later it was a warm spring day with lambs skipping about and I took my two girls up to the farm to share in this experience. I got to meet Hazel’s mam, who was helping with the packing. We

met the family pig, its piglets face to face and 6,000 chickens. As Hazel’s mam said ‘isn’t spring just a wonderful time of year for the family’. Seeing the children running around in the sun with the animals enjoying the experience of the outside and new life - what can possibly beat that? It is priceless. Next month, we will be doing an update with the Miller family. We are going to focus more on the Shaver hen and the production from the hens, arriving on the farm, to the eggs being collected by Lakes Free Range Egg Company, who working with many local producers, make many things happen. Meanwhile, if you have got some eggs, have a look at the number on it, then go to egg tracer at www.lakesfreerange.co.uk and you can then see how local your egg is. In keeping what is really down to earth local, we’ll also be looking at the small holding family production of locals that keep their own 4 to 6 hens. Still to come, we will also be discussing types of chicken and habit of chickens, breeding of chickens with Wetheriggs Conservation Centre, so if you’re looking at doing poultry DIY, this is the site link for you www.poultry.allotment.org.uk Importantly, we will be looking at how the free range chickens are benefiting from being free to do what chickens like to do.

Something you might want to know about your new local magazine. Lakes Local is part of an independent business called Eden Local Ltd, it is family owned and based in Penrith. It was formerly Meridian Sport Ltd, which started as a regional sports and events magazine back in 2007. Why the change in name? Because we’ve changed location! Meridian is a region in the south of England and the concept was part of a bigger campaign in that region. Eden Local is a regional based publication distributed to the Eden Valley it is also part of a bigger campaign in Eden . Meridian Sports and Events was a publication used to underpin and support a local campaign for a community to have its own radio station. Eden Local was created following no support from local media to promote the concept for Eden to have its own radio community station. That’s the short story; the full story about the Merdian Sport publication is on website www.cumbrianlocal. co.uk. Meanwhile, from a trial distribution of 5,500 copies, Eden Local has grown in just 18 months to over 18,000 copies distributed throughout the Eden Valley. Last month you were presented with the Eden Local ad the Eden FM concept. As a business, we offer a personal service since much of our business is conducted face to face. It takes time to get it right. When Charlotte, Sam, Keith and I have put the magazine together, this is then collated and set by our designers Chris and Stef. It can take up to 7 days to do this and it then LakesLocal

After sign off and print the publications are then sent to the Royal Mail Distribution Centre in Warrington in order to be sorted to come back to Penrith, Carlisle and Keswick. For the total production process, we have to allow at least 14 – 16 days. For this reason we try to schedule stories and articles that don’t date and we find that many readers keep the publication. We get constant feedback that many homes usually have a publication somewhere in their magazine rack or on a book case. Recently, one of our advertisers got a call with reference to the service they provide in Watermillock. Their ‘new’ customer had their Eden Local advert pinned to a board. Not sure where the rest is pinned, but the customer confirmed what we like to hear and that is that they found that business in the Eden Local. This an established business. At the end of 2011, a lady wrote to me with a request asking if we could put the month on the front cover to help her when she was filing the publication in order. From January it happened. We also had requests last year for the publication to be printed for the visually impaired. The audio format is now in the recording studios. Away from the home, Eden Local is found in waiting rooms, glove boxes, on trains, on tables in restaurants and tearooms across Eden. Described repeatedly, it is a ‘handy size to keep’, easy to pick up and easy to read and easy to store in a bag or put on the side for later. I suppose being free and having a month to read it, means it does get passed around a lot. Back to our Lakes Local production. Once Sam, Keith and I have signed off the magazine for the printer, 80% of the rest of our time is spent with our existing customers, meeting new customers, co-ordinating new stories, articles, designing new marketing campaigns but also constantly evaluating and measuring the results of our existing campaigns. A question to think about, if the Lakes and Eden Local magazine didn’t exist could you push your business through 23,148 for just £30? Do you have a takeaway menu? How much will it cost to design, print and post. Do you have a special event to promote? Do you have out of date leaflets, menus, brochures but no budget to update. Talk to us. There is a saving. If you are looking for something different here is an idea. Advertise every day on Eden FM radio and in Lakes Local every month. You can also have an advert in the North Lakes Directory 2013, which from 7th January goes out to every home and business in CA12 and Ca13 and you have a web page on the CA business website. The cost is £360 per year, which is less than 99p a day. It’s the package which means you don’t have to look a round. More details on page 19 and page 23

Eden

Lakes & Country

I

t’s traditionally the busiest time of year for us, as people get into full swing with their plans for a house move. This is when house sellers make the vital decision of who to trust with the sale of their most valued asset. It’s also a time when sellers who are already on the market, trying to sell, review what they are doing. For Eden, it’s the time of the year when we talk to more people about the difference that we can make when they sell their home. The best presentation, expert advice, ongoing communication and committed negotiation make it easier to sell your house and achieve the best price available.

When we established Eden Estate Agents, we imagined an estate agency that would be unlike others, where our simple aim is to do the best for our clients in a transparent way – with no place for the old clichés about how estate agents work. We began by creating a service to give property buyers the best experience, because when you’re selling your house it’s the buyers that need to be impressed, inspired and nurtured. By doing that, our seller clients get what they want – better sales and their own great experience. So when we go out on valuations, it isn’t just about talking about the pounds and pence of asking price and our commission; we need to know about a seller’s motivations and priorities, provide them with an understanding of the market conditions and show them the advantages of the Eden approach. What is needed is a realistic valuation and an approach to each property which ensures that it is marketed at its best. Within reason, local estate agents will value a property within a range of prices; that’s only a small part of house selling. The asking price can be set and changed to suit market conditions. When we’re valuing and advising, our view of the market and the experience of our team is crucial. Our key staff have local knowledge but also a wider perspective which

comes from working and living, for example, in London and Manchester. We sell around 40% of our clients’ properties to buyer’s from outside Cumbria and have particular expertise in advising our clients how to tap into that market. We have a track record of dealing with a very wide range of buyers who come from all over the UK and sometimes abroad. Factoring in our knowledge of what these buyers are looking for, and their budgets, enables us to value individual houses on their own merits, taking demand and buyer’s requirements into account. The Lake District and the Eden Valley are aspirational places to live. All properties are individual and to get across their selling points, you’ve got to see the bigger picture and see things through the eyes of these buyers, who have a different perspective and different expectations. The best way to achieve the best result is by matching the right buyer with the right property. With only quality properties in our portfolio, we can be ambitious and often achieve exceptional results. In tougher times our clients’ properties know they get outstanding marketing. We can only do this because of the Eden culture of ‘client first’ and a personal approach to valuing and presenting individual properties. So when we give you our view on the asking price and discuss this with you, there’ll be a range of figures to discuss before arriving at the starting price, taking into account what you are trying to achieve with your move – and who the target buyer is. It’s always important to take into account your planned purchase when you set off, to make sure that your targets are realistic. Once you appoint us to act for you, that’s when we start work, advising on getting ready to sell and discussing the marketing. Then the important bit - putting together the presentational materials we’ll use to promote your house. At the heart of this is a professional gallery of photos; all our clients get this service, it’s base camp for selling a house. We often pay more than one visit to a property, to make sure that the images are right – there’s no point in having external photos that are taken on dull days with grey skies. You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression. In a tough and competitive market, you need to stand out. For each property, we create a unique sales brochure – not just a set of ‘details’- which is professionally printed, to maximise visual impact. We aim for all our properties to look ‘best in class’. Our website has been designed from scratch to give buyers sitting at home everything they need to assess a property – a great slideshow, online brochure, floorplans, location map and Google Streetview. Take a look at www.edenestateagents.co.uk. and see the difference.

knowledge, so that they can get a really useful and exciting introduction to our clients’ properties. Whilst we are producing our photographic images, a written description of the property is prepared. We threw out ‘estate agent speak’ long ago and our plain English narratives are designed to give a relevant and concise sketch of what the property comprises and where it is, along with essential information about services and taxes. We also commission a set of measured floor plans and an Energy Performance Certificate and these are incorporated into the brochure. A large A3 display board is made and printed for our big office gallery and once you’re happy, we load all our marketing material onto our website and Rightmove…. and … your property’s on the market.

If you’re thinking about selling, look carefully at what the estate agents have to offer – look at how their websites work from a buying perspective and see how your property will be presented. What advice is there on how to prepare for selling and what is their approach to photography and brochures? Many properties have been on the market for some time. If you are one of these people, look at what support and advice you’re getting from your agent, if any. What kind of service are you receiving? Is their only response to you to reduce your price? What about better presentation, more communication and a more committed approach? Whether you’re thinking of selling, or you’ve been on the market a while and you wish for better, then look at our website, our central sales office, our brochures and our displays and give us a call.

Our marketing material and website presentations are specifically targeted at people who don’t have a local’s phone: 01768 899111

The Wainwright Society

A walk to the summit of Catbells Alfred Wainwright photograph by Derry Brabbs

3 miles 1200’ of ascent Alfred Wainwright wrote this about Catbells: ‘Catbells is one of the great favourites, a family fell where grandmothers and infants can climb the heights together, a place beloved. … Words cannot adequately describe the rare charm of Catbells, not its ravishing view. But no publicity is necessary: its mere presence in the Derwentwater scene is enough. It has a bold ‘come hither’ look that compels one’s steps, and no suitor ever returns disappointed but only looking back often.’ The North Western Fells, Catbells p. 1 This is a delightful walk, which, for full enjoyment, should be started at Keswick where the Derwentwater launch can be taken to land at Hawes End just below the starting point for this walk. By taking the launch, the anticipation of the climb ahead is enhanced, whilst being able enjoy the wonderful views down the full length of Derwentwater. From the landing stage, ascend through woods to the road, which marks the start of the walk. A zig-zag path is taken which climbs upwards to the start of the ridge walk. This path was constructed by Sir John Woodford, a local resident. Once started on the ridge, there is a clear blazed path leading unerringly to the summit. There are a few places where some very mild scrambling on rock is required as the path is well-worn. But there are good views on both sides of the ridge and when the summit is reached these can be enjoyed to the full. On a summer’s day, you will rarely have the place to yourself, but it is always possible to find a quiet spot just off the summit rocks. There is a fine panoramic view of the Derwentwater scene and by taking your Wainwright guide, you will be able to identify all the main peaks. Descend to Hause Gate and there bear left to find a pitched path leading off the fell where an undulating footpath leads back to the starting point. A leisurely ride on the launch back to Keswick completes this beautiful walk.

Blencathra Peaks and Pathways by Nick Wells

We could see Sharp Edge now, so this easy section of the walk gave us time to prepare for the most feared ridge in Britain. Upon reaching Scales Beck, we followed it steeply upwards until arriving at Scales Tarn. We had made it to base camp and enjoyed lunch as the dogs took their usual dip.

When I came to Cumbria in 1979, Blencathra was the first landmark I saw when driving over Stainmoor on the A66. I see it every day from my house, so earlier this year I thought it was time. Blencathra, or nicknamed Saddleback derived from its saddle shaped top, stands in Northern Lakeland and is the proud owner of the famous Sharp Edge. It is likely that the name Blencathra is derived from the Cumbric elements blaen (a bare hill top) and cathrach (a chair). This would give a meaning of “the bare hill top shaped like a chair”, which perfectly describes the topography of the mountain. The most popular ascent begins at Scales just up from Threlkeld, here you park in the long layby which is very quickly filled on a fine day. The A66 is a busy road so care needs to be taken as you make your way to the start of the walk. Having successfuly navigated our dogs over Helvellyn’s Striding Edge, we thought we would give them a go at Sharp Edge, but you know what thought did. Respect must be given to this feature at all times. The ascent of Scales Fell is a long steep walk for about the first half hour, then it levels out as we reach a crossroads in the path. Left takes you up the rest of Scales Fell narrowing out into a ridge before reaching the middle of the saddle, right takes you nowhere interesting, we took the path straight ahead, which was a parade of about a mile above the river Glandermackin. LakesLocal

www.lakeslocal.co.uk

It doesn’t get much better than this, the Tarn is guarded by Sharp Edge, Scales Fell and Blencathra. Taking the route from the tarn up to Scales Fell is certainly the easiest but we were here to conquer Sharp Edge, so we headed right and steeply up to the start of what can be discribed as a mass of bare rock with an edge sharp enough to shave on. It wasn’t long before we realised this tricky scramble was too much on this particular day as it was quite damp and very slippery, so we turned back before becoming another casualty for the mountain rescue, in fact everyone was turning back. Backtracking to the start of Sharp Edge, we dropped down the north side and walked an easier path up to Foule Crag, which is the right side of the saddle, and onto the summit of Blencathra on the left side. As usual the views were spectacular, and being on the edge of the Lake District at 2848 ft, we could see it all. We decided to decend this great mountain by Halls Fell Ridge, and our disappointment of Sharp Edge was soon forgotten as this ridge was magnificent from top to bottom. It was tricky in places, but safe enough before taking us all the way down, then turning left to Doddick Gill along the foot of Doddick Fell and back to the bottom of Scales Fell. This walk is about six miles long and took us four hours. I grade it moderate to hard.

Your Voice, Your Choice

As we enter the month of June, we enter a 2 year landmark for the campaign for Penrith and the surrounding areas to have its very own community radio. What has this got to do with the community around Keswick, there are many questions that could be asked and many debates that could be discussed. Why does Penrith need a local radio? To date people of all ages from the community have been on the radio, local charities, clubs, associations and organisations. Eden FM is a voluntary group of people from Eden aged from 12 to lets say an age of maturity. It is influence by local people, local tastes and local music. To advertise events is free, to advertise a local business cost about ÂŁ1.86 a day. Eden FM is a ‘not for profit’ Ltd

company, serving the community with the ownership on the community. It’s something which the community of Cumbria is starting to share. Cumbria is a community, on the internet it becomes a bigger community. As a community project Eden FM radio is not cash rich, our advertising and revenue is capped under the rules of how we run as a community radio station. In July we start the application process for a full-time FM frequency licence. From June 17th to July 14th we are on FM 24 hours a day for our second community trial licence that will run for 28 days. Meanwhile we are on air 24 hours a 7 days a week. How many people listen? How many people have radio’s? We are non commercial, but to cover cost we have 26 six advertising slots to sell. In each hour of radio we play 6 adverts that are approximately 30 – 40 seconds each. Run in a sequence of 3 ads they are played at around 20 minutes past the hour and 40 minutes past the hour.

cal business can book dedicated business hours and come into the Eden FM studios, talk business and discuss there business. You can sponsor an hour on Eden FM for as little as £5. To clarify it will cost you £1.86 per day to play you advert 5 times a day for 5 months. That’s about 750 plays. We do have advertising packages for 99p per day, if £1.86 is a bit tough on the budget. For more details email sales@edefm.co.uk. Route 66 England

We would hope the clue is in the title.

Whether it’s riding, trekking, cycling, driving, walking

This year the Cumbrian Local publication team, embarked on a new project. Our aim is to produce the ultimate guide for the ultimate route which we estimate to be probably the oldest route 66 in the world. There are a few others, the most famous probably that in the USA, but can you image, putting in an internet search for route 66 and it lands you in Cumbria? Can you image searching for England 66, can’t image why! And you find yourself on the A66 in Cumbria. So what are the chances of finding or coming across www.route66england.co.uk?

or hiking - for the visitors to this part of the world,

It’s a project and like the route itself, it wasn’t built in a day. We have traced the history of the road and with our historical guru ‘Keith Wood’ we have plotted the historical places and settlements on this route. We have also mapped out walks, activities, some seasonal events, local farm shops and local speciality producers. We are marketing the taste that you can take home and Cumbrian produce products that can be bought on line 365 days of the year.

For 2012 Cumbrian Local publications are

camping, caravanning, hostelling, staying at a B & B, a hotel, a motel or a traditional inn, either on the route or off the beaten track, eating, sleeping, relaxing or discovering, this might just be the ultimate guide, which is now being compiled. Are you a local business, which needs to raise its profile outside of the county or do you need to be seen or noticed when visitors arrive in your area? introducing the Eating in and Eating Out on Route 66 guide. This builds on the success of the Eden Local’s pilot ‘Eating Out in Eden’ guide, which was distributed from May 2011 to campsites, caravan sites, B & B’s, pubs, inns, café’s, restaurants, shops and areas where there were high foot falls of visitors. The distribution of this years publication is a minimum of 15,000 to 150 sites on route 66 from

What do we know about our route 66? Approximately 124 miles coast to coast, the A66 was officially named in the 1920’s when all roads were named with numbers, but of course it had to exist to be named. The better known Route 66 in the USA officially opened on 11th November 1926 and is a coast to coast drive of 2,448 miles. There are many roads named 66 around the world. Which is the oldest? It’s a debate but its one that the Romans might have had a say in maybe?

Scotch Corner to Cockermouth. Are you on the route, you can publish your menu or a suggested visitors shopping list of things to do related to your business. How much would it cost you to produce and distribute 15,000 leaflets to your target audience? Drop us a line at info@ route66england.co.uk for prices. If someone with a business background approached your business and put a daily rate on the table with a proposal that said their company ethics are based on your company achieving better performance , saving money and making more profit with the team you have, what would you think? If they then followed with the fact that an income for their business generated from the savings and profit, which you could then afford, what would you think? It’s not a fairy tale. It’s a fact that for 18 years, Perennial Process, as a small consultancy, has been supporting businesses of all sizes to become better businesses. In the current climate, we help businesses to establish what is realistically achievable.

And Finally...... What will Bee It’s another closing editorial, but it’s not just another bit of print. Thank you for taking the time to get to this page. Its early days for your Lakes Local as a business. We have been here before, but have you? The Lakes Local is a full colour opportunity for businesses and local groups to get their message through every door in CA12; the area in and around Keswick. I hope you have enjoyed this months edition I would like to thank all those businesses that have supported this issue. Meanwhile here is an event that we will be supporting in June Dalemain Plant Fair Sunday, 24th June 10am - 5pm The Bees have arrived and are busily settling in at the Dalemain Gardens The Dalemain Gardens have developed during the passing generations of owners and are opened to the public during the summer months for all to enjoy. Current owner Jane Hasell-McCosh is passionate about her garden, and as such this peaceful corner of England has seen a renaissance. Jane is particularly proud of the Himalyan Blue Poppies ‘menconopsis Dalemain’ which are synonymous with Dalemain and can be found in the wild garden from mid May to mid June - certainly a show not to be missed! Other highlights of the garden include the Moschata Rose which has grown thirty feet into a silver fir tree, giving this ancient tree a heavenly rose scent for the briefest of weeks. If it’s an occasion you’re looking for the Dalemain Plant Fair, being held on 24th June 2012, is an event not to be missed. Set to be a sweet success the Plant Fair is focusing on the contemporary plight of the honeybee, with an exciting array of LakesLocal

nursery stalls and new accessory and food stalls; the event will be showcasing bee friendly plants. There will also be bee-keepers giving talks on how to keep hives healthy and an opportunity to see the Dalemain’s very own bee hives set up in the 18th century deer park. Dalemain, which is widely regarded as having the finest collection of old-fashioned roses – a plant that bees love - in the north of England, seems the perfect place to celebrate these important pollinators.

However if the bees don’t have you buzzing there is plenty to suit all plant lovers with five acres of richly planted herbaceous borders with an intriguing and unusual combination of flowers. In particular, the terrace border concentrates on drought-loving and long flowering herbaceous plants to give the maximum amount of cover and in the Knot garden you will find an emphasis on herbs and white flowers.
