Round One 0 – 1 on Tuesday night. A good afternoon and a warm welcome to our visitors, Consett for our 17th league match of the season and to all those who have made the jour- In the table you’ll see the difference between these two sides and ourselves with Consett, but ney to the Frenchfield Park tonight. we came very close last week. A few will have their say on last weekend’s match. Four men, four goal scorers to be watched toNot blaming anybody but I do get to write the opening to this 13th match day programme of the day. The word is they have four forwards, Sweet, Elliot, Dawson and Crags who have about 11 season, so here’s my thoughts. goals between them this month. Michael Sweet has 8 to date in the league. I always do a bit of research into matches and even with all the facts and figures, standing with Bernard at the window looking out last Saturday, Enjoy the match, get behind the lads and have a we made some mistakes and we were punished, safe journey home. hence the end result, but for a moment in that first Come on you Bonny Blues!!! half, it reminded me of the Newcastle Benfield match in the determination the lads had in that Lee Quinn, Programme Editor first half as we came off 2-1 in the lead. We were clearly a different side in the second half. When I bumped into Jim in Carlisle by chance later that day, I didn’t know he had thrown in the towel until he told me he had resigned after the match. So for today, some bits about our visitors which links nicely and I think positively with my mention in last Saturday about the two matches between Consett and Newton Aycliffe. Consett fielding virtually the same side in both matches. 14th October at home Consett drew 1 – 1 with Newton Aycliffe. After a 1- 1 result away to Bishop Auckland last Saturday, they beat Newton Aycliffe in the Durham Challenge Cup

An update from our chairman Billy Williams, “Although we have had a very disappointing start to this season, Jim Nichols position was never under threat. No one understands how difficult the job is more than myself. Jim leaves his position and we would place on record how much we respect the work he has done on the clubs behalf. Jim leaves with an open invitation to become part of the clubs fabric after things have settled. In the interim, Andy Coyles and Shaun Gardener, who has been Assistant Manager under Jim Nichols will take control of first team matters. Andy Coyles recently joined the club after offering his services to the club. He is a senior lecturer in sport, and Manager of the British Universities team. He is based at Richmond, Yorkshire. We are extremely grateful to both for accepting the very difficult situation. Obviously it is a results business and it is hoped results will change, with regards to making a permanent appointment, regardless of the situation we have to make what we consider the right decision for the long term.” Updated 21:52 - 23 Oct 2017 by Karl Collinson

Consett AFC History Friday 22 November 2013 is a date which will be etched in Consett supporters’ minds for a long time. It was the night when, after more than a decade of delays and false dawns, they finally played a football match at their new Belle View Stadium. Built at a cost of £3m by Durham County Council after the club agreed to leave its home of 63 years, the crumbling, old Belle Vue Park, the occasion was beyond anyone’s wildest dreams. Newcastle United, who had provided the opposition for the Steelmen’s last game at the old ground, agreed to open the new one, and a Peter Beardsley-led side performed the honours on a freezing-cold night, in front of a bumper crowd of 2,954. Consett-born FIFA official Mark Clattenburg, who offered his services to his home town club for free, had to delay kick-off by 25 minutes so everyone could get in. The Magpies proved party-poopers by winning 2-1, though Consett striker Luke Sullivan, a local lad, had the honour of scoring the club’s first goal at their new home. A week later, 458 fans watched Consett beat Spennymoor Town 2-1 in the first Northern League game, with goals from Michael Mackay and Sullivan – the latter a wonder-strike which was captured for posterity by Sky Tyne & Wear’s cameras. The stadium, which has a state-of-the-art 3G pitch, is also home to more than 30 junior and ladies’ sides from U7s to U18s, and a football academy, making Consett AFC a truly community club. The club was founded way back in 1899 as Consett Celtic, and they played local matches until joining the Northern Alliance in 1919. Seven years later they switched to the North Eastern League (NEL), winning promotion from the 2nd Division at the first attempt. From 1935-37 Consett spent two further seasons in the Northern Alliance before returning to the semi-professional NEL, where they pitted their wits against the reserve teams of Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Darlington, Hartlepools, Carlisle and Gateshead, and clubs such as Ashington, Blyth Spartans, North Shields, South Shields and Spennymoor United. Their original ground, the Vicarage Field, was on land provided by Consett Iron Company, but the club had to vacate it in 1948 when the rapidly-growing steelworks needed the land for expansion. For a couple of years they played at Eden Colliery Welfare’s ground at Leadgate, until a suitable permanent home could be found. The new ground, Belle Vue Park, was largely constructed by volunteers from the steelworks, who moved tremendous amounts of cinders from local mine workings to form banking around the pitch. Two small stands were built, one on either side of the pitch, from concrete, brick and timber. The fee of £1,150 which 1st Division Charlton Athletic handed over for Tommy Lumley (an NEL record) paid for one of them. The opening game v Sunderland Reserves in August 1950 attracted the ground’s record gate of 7,000. Consett stayed in the NEL until its demise in 1958 after the reserve teams left. Their sole league title was in the wartime season of 1939-40, though they lifted its League Cup in 1951 and 1954. They spent two seasons in the Midland League, playing the likes of Skegness, Worksop and Peterborough, but the travelling became too much. The spell did include the club’s first-ever appearance in the 1st Round proper of the FA Cup, but they were beaten 5-0 at Doncaster Rovers in 1958-59.The Ironworkers, as they were known at the time, became founder members of the Northern Counties League in 1960, winning the championship in 1962 with former Newcastle United goalkeeper Jack Fairbrother as manager. They returned to the reformed North Eastern League in 1962, reverted to amateur status the following year, and 12 months later they were on the move again, to the Wearside League, when the new NEL folded. Playing in a competition mainly comprising colliery welfare and works sides, they did a cup double in 1968, winning the Sunderland Shipowners’ Cup and Monkwearmouth Charity Cup, and were league runners-up in 1969 and 1970.After several unsuccessful attempts, Consett were finally elected to the Northern League in 1970, and until recently their best season was 1976-77, when they finished level at the top with Spennymoor United, but lost a championship play-off 3-0 at Willington goal difference not counting at the time. They were in the 1st Division until 1987-88, when they were relegated, but under new manager Colin Carr, made a swift return, winning the 2nd Division Championship the next season, unbeaten at home in all competitions.
In 1994-95 they made up for three final defeats (in 1979, 1981 and 1992) by winning the Northern League Cup, beating Whitby Town 2-0 in the Final at Crook, with goals from Paul Staff and Carl Rowell. That was a notable achievement, but even better was a run to the 1st Round of the FA Cup in 1996-97. Again they were drawn away, to Mansfield Town, and the town became a focus of media attention for a few weeks. More than 1,000 people followed the team who, although they lost 4-0, gave their all. There was more silverware in 1997-98, when Carr’s side won the Sunderland Shipowners’ Cup – normally only for Wearside League teams, but open to past winners for its centenary year – by beating Jarrow Roofing 3-0. Consett’s top-flight status lasted 14 seasons until 2002-03, when they were relegated again, and that signalled the end of Carr’s 15-year reign as manager. However, under new boss Ray Lish, they repeated their previous feat by returning at the first attempt, only to suffer a third relegation in a disastrous 2004-05 season, during which they had four different managers. The next man to take the hotseat was Kenny Lindoe, who had won the Northern League title on a shoestring at Brandon two years earlier, and under his guidance the Steelmen made it a hat-trick of promotions at the first time of asking. They broke numerous club records along the way, starting 2005-06 with 19 consecutive wins, amassing 102 points, a +103 goal difference, and recording their biggest Northern League win, 12-1 v Guisborough Town. Their first season back in the top flight saw them finish a creditable 4th in the 1st Division, but the highspot was winning the Durham Challenge Cup for the sixth time. They beat Chester-le-Street Town 3-2 at Nissan, with goals from David Pounder (2) and Kraig Wilkinson. The previous wins were in 1948, 1950, 1959, 1961 and 1969.Season 2007-08 rivalled 1976-77 as the club’s best-ever. They were among the front-runners for the title until the turn of the year. But their longest-ever run in the FA Vase, where they controversially exited in the 5th Round at Merstham, 5-4 after extra time, cost them dear. The league games they had to catch up with proved too much for a relatively small squad, and they had to settle for the runners-up spot behind Durham City. In 2008-09 they went even closer, coming within minutes of a first league title. A point from their last game at Whitley Bay would have made them champions, and they led 2-0 at half-time. But a second-half fight-back saw the FA Vase finalists (and eventual winners) break Consett hearts with a late winner. Three days later Newcastle Benfield travelled to Penrith needing a win to snatch the championship from Consett’s grasp, and got it with seven minutes to go, leaving the Steelmen as runners-up for the second year in a row.2009-10 was ruined by injuries to an extent no one connected with the club could remember, with up to 12 players out at a time, and 41 different players used during the campaign. Away form was excellent, with 14 wins on the road matched only by champions Spennymoor. But home form was erratic to say the least, and the Steelmen had to settle for a 10th-place finish. In 2010-11, Lindoe embarked on a major rebuilding programme, with only six players remaining from the previous season, and he was rewarded with an unexpected rise to the top of the table on the back of excellent home form, where his team went 13 games unbeaten before losing to Spennymoor at the end of February. They lost momentum after the manager suffered a near-fatal St Patrick’s Day heart attack, but, under caretaker boss David Hagan and assistant David Robson, they rallied to finish runners-up for the third time in four seasons. Their tally of 93 points (and 103 goals) was their best-ever 1st Division haul, and would have been enough to win the title in most of the previous 10 seasons. The next three seasons, overshadowed by first planning wrangles, then the move from the old ground, and, in 2013-14, playing the first 18 league games away from home while the new stadium was being built, halted that momentum somewhat. But Frank Bell, who took over as Chairman in 2013, has put in place a plan of gradual improvement, on and off the field, with the aim of making Consett AFC a force to be reckoned with over the next few years. It suffered a setback in January 2015, when, after more than 500 games and nearly 10 years in charge, long-serving Kenny Lindoe stood down as manager. He’s still very much involved with the club, scouting and identifying and recruiting young players. His replacement was Colin Myers, who cut his coaching teeth under Kenny at Brandon before going on to be manager at Bishop Auckland, where he won the Durham Challenge Cup, and assistant manager at Blyth Spartans, who he helped to the 3rd Round of the FA Cup.After a good end to 2014-15, and a 9th-place finish, 2015-16 started promisingly, with FA Cup wins over Colne and Scarborough, and a narrow defeat by National League side Bradford Park Avenue. But form slowly deteriorated, leading to early exits from all the other cups, and after a defeat at West Auckland on 5 March 2016 – the 9th in 13 games – Colin resigned. Player-coach Mark Eccles, a Consett lad with more than 100 games for the club to his name, agreed to take over as interim manager until the end of the season. He got the team back on track again, playing attractive attacking football, and 10 wins, 3 draws and just 3 defeats in his 16 games in charge saw him appointed on a permanent basis at the end of the season - one of the youngest managers in the Northern League, at just 35. The next chapter in the club’s history is just waiting to be written...

Consett AFC. Let’s Meet the Players Ross Coombe (Goalkeeper) Despite only turning 18 in May, Ross was first-choice for last season’s all-conquering Under-21s, and ended 2016-17 in goal for the first XI too. He was thrown in at the deep end, making his debut away at league leaders North Shields on 8 March, and acquitted himself well, despite a 2-1 defeat. That was the first of 9 appearances by the season’s end, and he was learning his trade with every game. This season he has enjoyed an extended run in the first team due to David Knight’s injury, and was man of the match at Dunston, where he saved a penalty. Clark Kay (Defender) A big, strong left-back or centre-back who signed in summer 2016 summer after moving to the North East from Scotland. Had three years at Dunfermline Athletic as a youngster, making the bench for an SPL game, and played for Rosyth, Kelty Hearts and Tayport in his homeland. Made his Consett debut v West Allotment in the FA Cup on the opening weekend of 2016-17, and his first goal was the winner in the FA Cup at Clitheroe two weeks later. Made 42 appearances last season, and has become a crowd favourite, earning the nickname Cafu! Arjun Purewal (Defender) Signed on 28 March from Jarrow Roofing, he made his debut the same night as a late substitute in the 4-2 defeat by Morpeth. He had joined the Roofers from Bishop Auckland, where he captained the team in his second spell. A Northern League winner at Darlington, he played higher up the pyramid for the Quakers, Blyth Spartans and Whitby Town. Although he hails from Sunderland, he has represented Punjab at international level. Ryan McKinnon(Defender) Hexham-born Ryan’s career began at Newcastle United, where he spent eight years at the Academy, before being released in May 2015.The Magpies’ loss was Consett’s gain, as the big centre-back signed for the Steelmen on the recommendation of no less a judge than Peter Beardsley.A no-nonsense defender who likes to keep his play simple, and reads the game superbly, he lives in the Consett area, and quickly became a crowd favourite. He captained the side in just his 10th game, and got his first goal in a 3-1 win at West Allotment , but his season was ended prematurely by injury. Happily, he is on contract, and is looking to get back to his best at the heart of the back four. Matty Solcombe (Defender) At the age of just 22, Matty is the definition of a utility player, and is closing in on 200 appearances for the club. Signed in January 2012 after being spotted by Kenny Lindoe at Sunderland College Academy, he made his debut v West Auckland in the Durham Challenge Cup, aged just 17.He has played everywhere from right-back to left-wing, but is happiest in central midfield. Had the honour of captaining Consett in their final league game at the old Belle Vue ground in May 2013, aged just 19.A popular choice as Players’ Player of the Year in 2014-15, Matty has also been nominated twice for the Northern League’s Young Player of the Year award. Jordon Lavery (Defender) Jordan is a left-sider who signed from Bishop Auckland on 28 September 2015, and made his debut in the 1-1 draw with West Allotment Celtic the following night. Likes nothing better than getting forward and delivering quality balls into the box, but has also showed he has a quality strike on him.In and out of the side last season, he showed flashes of his previous form towards the end of a campaign in which he made 43 appearances. Has shown his versatility by also playing at centre-back and right-back. Chris Rogan (Defender) Shotley Bridge-born Chris, who came up through the club’s junior ranks, was promoted to the first-team squad in 2016-17 after impressing for the Under-21s.A left-sided defender, who can also play as a centre-back or in midfield, he is quick, strong, good in the air, and composed on the ball. After being on the bench several times, he made his debut as a sub in the 9-0 win over Chester-le-Street on 15 October 2016, then played the second half of the 1-0 win at Penrith four days later. His first start was in the 3-2 defeat at Washington on 22 October 2016, and he was man of the match in his next game, in the Durham Challenge Cup at Whickham, three days later. Now a first-team squad regular, he is looking for a position to make his own. Dan Hawkins (Midfield) An ex-Middlesbrough Academy player, Dan joined Bishop Auckland on release. He had four seasons with them, winning the Durham Challenge Cup. Joining Blyth Spartans in the EvoStik League in 2014-15, he played a big part in their run to the FA Cup 3rd Round. Signed for Consett in the summer of 2015, but missed 10 weeks with a broken hand, suffered in the FA Cup match v Bradford Park Avenue. Played mainly in midfield, but showed his versatility by turning out at right-back, centre-half and centre-forward. Signed a new contract in summer 2016 and has been named vice-captain for the season. Nathan Lawrence (Midfield) The midfielder, who is another product of the Gateshead College Academy, was signed from 2ndDivision Durham City, where he had spent two seasons, on 22 October. He made his debut three days in the Durham Challenge Cup at Whickham. He attended the Middlesbrough and Sunderland academies as a youngster, and also had a spell with Seaham Red Star.
Jack Elliot (Midfield) A pacey wide man who was already on the club’s radar last season, even before he scored against us for West Auckland in our defeat at Darlington Road in March. He was on loan to West from Gateshead, and when he was released by the Tynesiders in the summer, after featuring for the U19s and reserves, but being unable to break into the first team, the Steelmen were quick to capture his services. Made his debut in the FA Cup tie v Bishop Auckland on 5 August and has quickly become a crowd favourite. Calvin Smith (Midfielder) The classy midfielder re-signed in summer 2017 from Jarrow Roofing, where he spent the previous season. His first spell at the club, after he signed from Spennymoor Town in 2012, saw him score 26 goals in 208 games, including some superb long-range strikes. A class act, with a great range of passing, he rarely misses a game. At Sunderland AFC Academy as a youngster, he has also played for Dunston UTS, Durham City and Blyth Spartans. Josh Gray (Midfielder) The wide man became a Steelman for the third time in October 2017 after re-signing from Newton Aycliffe. He originally joined in summer 2014, but left at the end of August 2015 for Ashington. He returned in March 2016 when he became Mark Eccles’ first signing, but left in November 2016 for Aycliffe after failing to command a regular starting place. Played for Darlington in the Football League at just 16, and has also been at Blyth Spartans (loan) and Durham City. Josh Scott (Midfielder) The wide man is a local lad who signed in the summer of 2017 from Newcastle Benfield, and showed lots of promise in pre-season. He scored a couple of goals before suffering an ankle injury against Annfield Plain which saw him miss the first few weeks of the season. Previously with Queen of the South, he made a belated debut as a substitute against West Auckland on 30 September. Michael Sweet (Forward) An England U16 international, Sweety attended Gateshead College Academy, scoring regularly for the Reserves and U19s, but was released in May 2013.He joined Billingham Synthonia, where he scored 32 goals in his first season and 34 in 2014-15 as Synners fought an unsuccessful battle against relegation. After being named Northern League Young Player of the Year and runner-up in the senior award, he joined Consett in the summer of 2015.He scored on his opening-day debut v Sunderland RCA, and ended up as top scorer with 26 goals, despite being played out wide for much of the campaign. Signed a new contract in the summer of 2016. David Dowson (Forward) The striker was initially signed on loan from Vanarama National League North side Spennymoor Town on 1 September. After a successful loan spell in which he scored 4 goals in 7 games, the transfer was made permanent on 7 October. Started his career at Sunderland and played in League Two for Chesterfield and Darlington. A prolific goalscorer for Durham City in the Northern Premier League, he was a key member of Darlington 1883’s Northern League-winning side. After 4 seasons with Darlo he joined Spennymoor in 2016, and scored 12 goals in 54 games, including 8 in their 2016-17 Evo-Stik Northern Premier play-off winning campaign. Michael Mackay (Forward) The club legend re-joined for a third spell in the summer, 16 months after reluctantly leaving during Colin Myers’ time as manager. Scored 271 goals in 308 games between 2005-08 and 2011-15, either side of three and a half years as a pro at Hartlepool United. Has also played for Birtley Town, Durham City, Gateshead (loan), but his heart belongs at Belle View. He is the club’s record all-time goalscorer.
I have gone on record stating my disappointment things didn’t work out for Jim Nichols. Geographically for our club it has historically been a real challenge competing in the Northern League with all the players available and without doubt the finances other clubs appear to have at their disposal.

Our move from a central town position along with the added expense of running Frenchfield Park has not been an easy one, however we have introduced a reserve and academy team in an effort to give local players who aspire, an opportunity to progress through to First team level. The Junior side of the club continues to prosper and my thanks go to all involved in making it work, coaches and parents who give up valuable time every weekend. Looking after the team for today’s game are Shaun Gardner along with Andy Coyles. Andy a Cumbrian by birth offered his services to the club. Living at Richmond, Yorkshire he is now a Senior Coach working at Newcastle University along with responsibilities to the British Universities team. Our poor start makes every point vital so it is hoped we get something from a Consett side who have started the season in a very positive way. Wednesday sees the visit of another high flying side in Shildon. Always a difficult fixture, if he is in their side it will be interesting to see what reception Martyn Coleman receives after leaving us once again. It is obviously frustrating from our clubs point of view when a local lad with his talent prefers not to pull on the blue shirt. We have had some interest in the vacant Managers position. It is always difficult when a Manager leaves but it is so important to hopefully make the right decision in appointing the right person to carry the club forward? A week is a long time in football. Next Saturday we make the trip to Cockermouth in the Cumberland Cup. I appeal to all our supporters to get behind the team in an effort to get that all important win
In very wet and windy conditions it was a sluggish start for Penrith. A superb run from Main, found Gardner who scored a cracker from 20 yards out into the bottom corner. One nil to Penrith. We then conceded a goal. Will Paul had a header cleared off the line, whilst Connor Shields put in some great runs form. I think it was one of these runs that with a few minutes to half time led to a free kick Half time 2 – 1 and a well-earned lead for Penrith. It was a good game, but the second half it didn’t go our way. Aycliffe closed in and two goals later, we were on the losing team. My man of the match was Robbie Hebsen. He had a good game. Blues aim for FA Cup first round PENRITH are just 90 minutes from a place in the first round proper of the FA Cup, but manager Geoff Byers knows his side race a formidable task at Winsford today. He went to watch the Cheshire side in a Unibond Premier League game at Radcliffe on Tuesday, which they won 2-0 and was very impressed. “They look very good. They are very strong in defence and have conceded only five goals all season. They get behind the ball very quickly and have tow man-mountains at the back so we will have to try and keep the ball on the ground.” Byers said Winsford looked far better than their Unibond League colleagues Guiseley who Penrith defeated 2-1 in the previous round. They are currently second in the league with games in hand on the leaders whereas Guiseley are a mid-table side. Penrith will field the same team which defeated Guiseley but Byers and coach Geoff Rayson will not feature on the bench today as they were forced to do in Leeds. “I can’t change the team too much as we have just the same lads. I just have to tell them what I want and if we play well and get a bit of luck we have every chance of beating them. “The players are up for it. They have been featuring in the Press and the television cameras have been to training, so they want to do well,’ added the manager. Penrith: Byran, Rigby, Thompson, Wilson, Kirkby, Strong, Chapman, Noctor, Fyfe, Bell, Lawson. Subs: Wharton, Walton, McCombie. If Penrith reach the first round it will be the first time they have done so since the 198586 season when they lost 9-0 to third division Burnley. The season before that saw them lost 2-0 to Hull City in the first round, while in 198182 they defeated Chester 1-0 to reach the second round when they lost to Doncaster Rovers.
Penrith v Keswick on the cards PENRITH will play Gillford Park in the second round of the Cumberland Cup after their 13-1 drubbing of Windscale Reserves, and the winner of that game will then meet Westmorland League champions Keswick, who defeated Longtown 6-2. The Blues will take on the Northern Alliance side at Carlisle next Saturday. Although Penrith ran away with victory at Windscale, credit should go to the home side for never giving up. Tony Fyfe opened the scoring after five minutes and Andy Chapman added another five minutes later. Fyfe and Darren Noctor made it 4-0 and Fyfe completed his hat-trick on 20 minutes. Tim Bell than netted a hat-trick in six minutes, scoring in the 23rd, 25th and 29th minutes to give Penrith an 8-0 half-time lead. After the interval, the Blues continued to dominate and goals from Jamie Howard on 47 minutes and Richard Walton a minute later increased their tally. Windscale grabbed a consolation goal after 75 minutes but within second Fyfe completed his second hat-trick of the game. Help take us back in time to Southend Road. Northern League Update Bishop Auckland manager Colin Myers feels that his side have turned a corner after they drew 1-1 with Consett on Saturday. Bishops played with ten men for two thirds of the game following the dismissal of defender Ibby Hassan for a last man foul, and they showed their character by fighting back and earning a point. Hassan was dismissed on the half hour mark, when he brought down David Dowson and was adjudged to have denied him a goalscoring opportunity. Consett took advantage and went in front just on half time, with a long range strike by Michael Sweet that flew past Bishops keeper Scott Pocklington. Consett wasted three good chances to go further in front before Bishops finished the game strongly, and in the last minute Andy Johnson’s free kick was saved, but Shaun Ryder followed up and scored. Bishops remain fourth from bottom, and are now five points clear of the relegation zone. Shildon are up to fourth thanks to a 4-2 home win over Guisborough. They took the lead with a free kick by Sam Hodgson on 17 minutes, but Louis Goldsack quickly equalised. Matty Robson then fired the Railwaymen ahead with another free kick from 25 yards, then the in-form Billy Greulich-Smith fired the third just before the break, his fifth goal in four games. Adam Burnicle made it 4-1 on 70 minutes, with a goal from Mason McNeil for Guisborough a consolation eight minutes from the end. Newton Aycliffe had a good 3-2 away win at Penrith that lifts them seven points above the relegation zone. Penrith took the lead with a 20 yarder by Shaun Gardiner, but Andrew Grant-Soulsby equalised with a header before half time. Gardiner put Penrith back into the lead from a free kick, but Aycliffe hit back on the hour with a good finish by Craig Hutchinson from a through ball. Kurt Matthews got the winner six minutes later with an effort from the edge of the box. The Penrith manager Jim Nicholls resigned after the game with his team third from bottom. In the second division, Darlington RA won the basement clash against Alnwick by 3-1 to go up to fifth from bottom. Jim Wilson put the RA in front just on half time, but Lewis Coyle levelled for Alnwick. Mark Sims, with his sixth goal of the season, and Callum Bennett hit back for the RA to give them their fourth win of the season. Chris Lax’s first game in charge of Crook Town saw them lose 2-0 at Jarrow, for whom Nick Quinn and Josh Allen scored. Because of Darlington RA’s win, Crook have now dropped to fourth from bottom. Esh Winning continued their improvement by easily beating Durham City 5-0 at Waterhouses to put them eighth in the table. Recent signing Connor Halpin scored twice, as did Nick Marley, with Dagan Taylor also chipping in. Esh scored four times in the second half. Willington lost 1-0 at home to Heaton Stannington, Dan Robinson scoring the goal that puts the visitors fourth. Chester-le-Street drew 1-1 with West Allotment in their bottom four clash. Joshua King put them ahead on 52 minutes, but Allotment equalised nine minutes from time through Bruno Mendes-Correia. Chester had midfielder Craig Marron dismissed when they were a goal up. Brandon, who are looking for a new manager following the resignation of Lee Jewett, were beaten 3-2 at home by Blyth AFC after they led 2-1 with seven minutes left. Kyle Wren and Aaron Jackson put them 2-1 up before Liam Gillesphey and Damien Stevens scored late on. Ray Simpson The Northern Echo
Penrith Ladies and Girls Report
Page 18
FC United 11 Penrith AFC Ladies 0 Penrith AFC Ladies were dealt a footballing master class by a superb FC United Womens team. United dominated throughout and despite Penrith’s best efforts they had no answer to their exceptional technique, pace and fitness. Manager Simon Savage said “United were excellent. I can’t fault the effort, attitude and commitment of my team however it really did feel like United had 3 extra players on the pitch. They were so composed on the ball and literally never wasted a pass” The fixture was played on FC United’s fantastic modern stadium in front of a loud and boisterous crowd of 188 FC United supporters. This seemed to unsettle Penrith who appeared to have froze as they conceded 2 sloppy goals in the first 4 mins of the game. Penrith found their feet and produced a period of gritty defending as they battled to quell the FC United onslaught. Penrith, too, showed glimpses of what they were capable of going forward but without seriously threatening the FC United goal. FC United eventually extended their lead shortly before half time with 2 quick fire goals to 4. FC United made it 5-0 early in the 2nd half and Penrith knew that the game had become a damage limitation exercise. Penrith stuck to their task throughout but as limbs tired FC United took full advantage. The defeat sees Penrith drop out of the League Cup into the League Plate competition

Penrith: Jones, Nelson(Glendinning), Williams, C.Smith, Brierley(Campbell), Nutter, Coulthard(Fawkes), Alderson, Hopton, S.Smith, Johnston A very good FC United team out classed our Ladies team. Certainly cant fault the effort, commitment and work rate of our Ladies but sometimes you just have to applaud the opposition. FC United will beat most teams they play this season and will score alot of goals on the way. Penrith AFC Development 0-7 Westbury Ladies Penrith’s Development team also had a difficult afternoon losing 7-0 to early pace setters Westbury Ladies. A depleted Development team battled well but were undone by Westbury’s strength and power. Richard and his team proved to have a great deal of skill and expertise between them with a determined and creative approach to any unforeseen problems that arose. The new roof progressed smoothly and quickly despite the notorious Cumbrian weather. They were polite, friendly and considerate. they did a great job and they cleared up and whisked away the rubble afterwards. We can't praise them enough. Richard came and got the job done and saved us money. We had new lead valleys put in roof, not only did Richard beat every quote we got he also done a little extra work free of charge, would highly recommend

JUNIOR GIRLS PENRITH SAPPHIRES
Page 22
Sunday 22nd October Unison Athletic v Penrith Sapphires Very cold morning for the girls but they played great football. Passing was good quality. The girls heads never went down. Sapphires were winning 1-0 but Unison came straight back making the score even 1-1. It was a very close game throughout, Penrith Sapphires got a goal back 2-1 H/T Play went on and Unison scored again making it even but then Unison became stronger scoring another 2 goals. The girls still played really well and kept the pressure on. Soon enough a power shot from Annabelle deflected off a Unison player and hit the back of the net 4-3. Soon after the girls pressed forward scoring the equaliser, 4-4 Both teams played amazing. Well done everyone.
Page 24 I find myself writing a similar report from today’s game to the one I wrote last week. We faced 2nd in the league today Ibis Res and we were much the better team and dominated throughput the first half. Ibis took the lead from the penalty spot after a crude challenge by GK Hogg but we levelled with a fine finish from debutant and an outstanding Will Matt Rogers Reay.

Who has to take Man of the Match. We played some lovely football and took the lead with Will Reay getting a second goal on 35 minutes. However just before HT Ibis equalised from some sloppy play by the Academy in midfield so went in at the break 2-2.
Colin Watson ©
Our Academy made a slow start after the break as they did last week and Ibis were much the better team. It was from a free kick that wasn’t defended well that gave Ibis the lead in the 55th minute.
Both teams battled in horrible conditions 2nd half but the Academy could not find a break through. Matt Rogers
