A good evening and a warm welcome to our visitors, Shildon and to all those who have made the journey to the Frenchfield Park tonight. It’s the first of 8 matches scheduled for November! Watching the match, we were at 22 minutes when Chris Wrighte did that amazing cross. Standing next to some of the Consett fans at the back of the stand, they didn’t know what had hit them, but as we’ve seen already this season, there was a lot great work in the first half but the second half we just weren’t there. Pending announcements tonight, Billy’s Blog will fill you in on page 10 about the developments behind the scenes with finding a new manager.
Our final report goes with thanks to Karl Collison and his coaches for the Junior boys update on page 24. Back to this evening, we know where Shildon are in the table. They haven’t lost or drawn away in the league. They have lost just one match in the league, 12th August against Jarrow Roofing at home. It’s the one to win! Next up we are away Saturday in the 3rd Round I am pleased to be getting the regular reports of the Cumberland Cup at Cockermouth K/O from the ladies and it is pleasing to the eye when 1.30pm full list of fixtures page 26. you see them at the top of their table, details on pages 18-19. In Tonight’s Programme It’s second appearance this season is our ‘Blues In Reserve’ report which is also good reading and statistics, although they did suffer a loss to Kendal last week in the Cup. We did have a few of the lads in the first team. With Jim Nicols back on the pitch with Penrith Town, I couldn’t resist an update and a photo, page 20. Meanwhile, it’s good news for the Academy team. Thanks to Matt Rogers for an upbeat report and a win for the lads.

Did you know? We’ll I couldn’t fit it in last week, but whilst the 28th wasn’t a good result there was one result we should remember; that was 26th October.

In fact on that day in 1863... A meeting at Freemason’s Tavern in Great Queen Street, London, leads to the formation of The Football Association, or The FA as it is perhaps better known, the oldest football association in the world. It took a hard headed Yorkshire man to finally bang heads together and produce the first comprehensive set of rules for the game. Born in Hull, Ebenezer Cobb Morley had moved to London at the age of 22, to further his career as a solicitor. A keen sportsman and captain of the Barnes Club, Ebenezer instigated a meeting on the morning of 26th October 1863 at the Freemason’s Tavern in Great Queen Street, London, that would ultimately lead to the formation of The Football Association, or The FA as it is perhaps better known today. It took five further meetings at the Freemasons, between October and November that year, for the FA to produce the first comprehensive rules of football. Even then at the last meeting, the FA treasurer from Blackheath withdrew his club, angered by the removal of two draft rules; the first would have allowed players to pick up and run with the ball in hand, the other prohibited a player from tripping up and holding onto an opponent. Other clubs also withdrew their support from The FA and went on to join with Blackheath to form the Rugby Football Union; the term soccer was now commonly used to distinguish between the two codes of football. Meanwhile, showing true Yorkshire grit, Ebenezer along with the eleven remaining clubs, went on to ratify the original thirteen laws of the game. Although some northern clubs remained loyal to the Sheffield Rules well into the mid-1870s, the FA continued to tweak its laws until there was little difference between the two games.
Today the laws of the game are governed by the International Football Association, which was formed in 1886 after a meeting in Manchester between The Football Association, the Scottish Football Association, the Football Association of Wales and the Irish Football Association. The first ever international football match was played on 30th November 1872 between Scotland and England. Played at the West of Scotland Cricket Club ground at Hamilton Crescent in Glasgow. The match finished in a 0-0 draw and was watched by around 4,000 spectators.

Shildon AFC History FORMED in 1890 as Shildon Town, the Railwaymen joined the Auckland and District League two years later and in 1894 merged with the Rangers and Heroes to become Shildon United.

In 1900, the club played in the new Northern League Division Two but folded that season due to financial problems – as did the Second Division. A re-formed club joined the Northern League in 1903 to replace Stockton St John’s. In 1907, Shildon joined the semi-professional ranks of the North Eastern League, finishing second in season 1932/33. Before WWII the club won four successive Northern League Division One titles; a record that stood until overhauled by Blyth in 1984. In 1937 the team was unbeaten on their march to the title with Jack Downing firing in a record 61 league and cup goals. A replay win at York City in 1927/28 saw the club reach the first round proper of the FA Cup for the first time. In the first round they have also played Brentford, Doncaster Rovers, Lincoln City, Scunthorpe United and Oldham Athletic three times. The last time the club reached the first round was in 2003/04, losing out 7-2 against Notts County. The club also reached the second round, in 1936/37 against Dartford. The Dean Street turnstiles and distinctive grandstand were erected in 1923. A £45,000 grant saw new dressing rooms and a social club built beneath the stand 60 years later. Shildon won the Second Division championship in 2001/02, scoring 135 goals and finished runners-up in two cup competitions. The following season they won the Northern League Challenge Cup with a 3-2 golden goal victory over Billingham Synthonia at Feethams. Thomas Clegg ©
Tragedy struck the club in February 2004 when 26-year-old player, Lee Hainsworth was killed in a road accident on his way to training. He had been with the club for six years. The Brown Street stand was renamed in his memory. Bill Aisbitt, a lifelong stalwart at the club, died in June 2003 and the boardroom was named in his honour after over 50 years loyal service. At the end of the 2004 season, the Railwaymen came under serious threat through financial difficulties when the former chairman severed all ties with the club. At Eden FM Community Radio the end of the season all the players and the manager left the club, leaving it crippled. The club survived a relegation scare but since then has gone from strength to strength under the management team. In 2012-13, the club reached two cup semi-finals. A depleted side lost in the Durham Challenge Cup to Spennymoor Town. The match brought an end to the playing career of midfielder Chris Hughes after he suffered a knee injury. And there was more heartbreak as the side narrowly missed a dream day out at Wembley after losing their two-legged FA Vase semifinal to a late extra-time goal in the second leg at home. Shildon AFC. Let’s Meet the Players Nick Liversedge – Goalkeeper Liversedge joined Darlington in November 2007, after progressing through Rotherham United’s Centre of Excellence. He spent the 2008-2009 season on loan to Whitby Town, making 30 appearances for the non-League club. He made his senior debut on 6 October 2009 against Leeds United in a Football League Trophy game. He was released by the club following their relegation from League 2, along with 13 other players. Liversedge was announced as a Whitby Town player in 2010. On 10 May 2013, over a year since his first trial for Burnley reserves, it was confirmed that Liversedge would join the Championship side on a free transfer. Keiran Proctor - Goalkeeper Young goalkeeper signed from Chester-le-Street in September 2017, previously player with Gateshead Under 19’s when he was 16. Jamie Harwood – Defence/Midfield Club Captain Jamie is in his second spell at the club.A marauding right back who adds attacking flair to his defensive abilities. Previous clubs include Bishop Auckland and Spennymoor. Daniel Moore – Defence/Midfield Player/Manager “Bobby” is well known in the Northern League signed from Spennymoor Town, whereas club captain he famously climbed the Wembley steps with a broken leg to help lift the FA Vase in 2012-13. A versatile player who brings added steel to midfield or defence. Captained the team to the League & Cup double in the 2015/16 season. Dan Groves – Defence Signed from Spennymoor Town at the beginning the 2015/16, is comfortable across the back line. Started his career with Darlington where he made 16 appearances in Division Two. Matty Robson – Defence Signed at the beginning of the 2015/16 season to add additional experience to the back line. Previously played for Hartlepool and Carlisle. A firm fans’ favorite, Robson won Carlisle’s 2012/13 player of the year award. Last Season’s Directors Player of the Year and Managers Player of the Year. Dominic Curl – Defence Young left back/centre half signed from the successful Shildon AFC Under 18’s at the beginning of the 2017/18 Season Jack Turnbull - Defence Defender signed middle of September 2017 Kyle May – Defence Signed from Workington the 34-year-old centre-back played over 544 games scoring 32 goals during his 12 years at the Evo-Stik Premier League club. Adding non-competitive games into the equation, May appeared in a Workington shirt 650 times. May capped a wonderful time at Workington by guiding the club to the Cumberland Cup success over Penrith at Brunton Park, proudly lifting the trophy in his home city.
Sam Hodgson – Midfield Sam is a versatile and dependable midfielder, who can slot into a defensive role if required. He has proved himself capable of filling a number of positions and also provides a goal scoring threat going forward Marc Ellison – Midfield A hard working defender/midfielder, Marc signed for Shildon from Whitley Bay. Previous clubs include Hartlepool United, Darlington, Spennymoor and Crook Lewis Dodds – Midfield Signed from Spennymoor in October 2015. Played over 250 games over 7 Seasons for Spennymoor. Previously with Durham City. Anthony Peacock – Midfield One of the best Attacking midfielders in the league signed at the beginning of the 2017/18 Season. The former Middlesbrough academy player has previously played for Darlington, Spennymoor and last season Billingham Synthonia. Cieran Jackson – Midfield Signed from SAFC Foundation of Light Shildon Scholars at the end of the 2016/17 season David Renyard - Midfield/Forward Signed at the beginning of the 2017/18 season, brings a wealth of experience to the squad having played at Gretna, Celtic Nation & Workington Billy Greulich-Smith – Forward One of the hardest working forwards in the game, Billy was top scorer in the 2015/16 season and was also voted the Northern League ‘Player of The Year 2015/16’ one of the best and most dangerous forwards in the league in the air. Michael Rae – Forward Michael, a proven goal scorer, joined Shildon from Celtic Nation. Targeted by his former club Hartlepool before his move across the Pennines, the ex Spennymoor forward adds physical strength as well as goal scoring pedigree to the Shildon attack. Adam Burnicle – Forward Signed from West Auckland in February 2017. Previous clubs include Willington, South Shields, Tow Law. Prolific striker who knows where the net is. A dynamic player who always gives 110%. Cameron Fenton – Forward Centre Forward signed from Vanarama National League Gateshead at the beginning of the 2017/18 season Martyn Coleman - Forward Strong, Powerful centre forward who signed from Penrith in September 2017, previously played at Celtic Nation and South Shields

Firstly I would like to say what a spirited performance it was from every one of our players in our last home game against Consett. To see the effort put in by players and the obvious tactical work done, even though we are going through a difficult period, it shows that there are signs we could be looking to improve. With Jim Nichols departure we are indebted to Andy Coyles and Shaun Gardner for holding things together. It has also been encouraging that we have had several applications for the post as Manager. I am therefore, delighted to announce that a new Manager has agreed to join us. Unfortunately there are a couple of small items to clear up before we can release news to the press. It is a difficult challenge ahead, but from my knowledge of the guy, he will relish the challenge. He can be assured of my support and I urge everyone with the club at heart to be the same. We have a Cumberland Cup tie on Saturday away to Cockermouth. Any supporters wanting to travel by mini bus? Please ask at the bar or ask anyone connected to the club. Here’s hoping Willie Paul is on the road to recovery after suffering a broken nose against Morpeth. Loyalty and service is a rarity nowadays. We are blessed to have such an individual on board and let’s hope for a long time to come. Ex Manager Jim Nichols turned out at Centre Forward for Penrith Town on Saturday. By all accounts he had to be helped into bed. I believe his debut may also be his last appearance!
It was a great start for Penrith A pass from Connor Shields to Shaun Gardner and he scored 1 – 0. Chris Wrighte put in a cross that was heading for the goal. It beat the keeper who was off his line and we were 2 – 0 up. The pressure was now on a volley from 20 yards and was superbly tipped over by Dixon. But under continued pressure we were level by half time. We were a different side in the second and seeing Consett take the third goal, there was no way back. Final score 2 – 3. My Man of the match Matty Moyman. He was really good at Full back. Penrith AFC Mascot and No1 fan Bradley Hodgson.

Extract from the files of the Cumberland and Westmorland Herald 31st October, 1992 BUSY TIME FOR BLUES PENRITH are at full strength for today’s league trip to Newcastleton town, and on Tuesday they take on the runaway league leaders when they travel to Bamber Bridge. Next Saturday they entertain Marchon in the second round of the Cumberland Cup. Tuesday’s Tennant’s Trophy game at Bamber Bridge was called off due to a waterlogged pitch. The Blues gave a gritty, wholehearted display in conditions which were far from perfect, but they had to be content with a share of the points from their North West Counties League match with visitors Darwen on Saturday. A downpour earlier in the afternoon produced a heavy pitch and, as the field churned up into semi-quagmire, both teams showed plenty of determination and incident. With Peter Simpson and Jamie Frankland back in the home defence, manager Mike Herring made positional changes in the line-up including the return of Simon Gate to he usual role as centre forward, after deputising as a defender in a mid-week cup clash. Penrith had the edge in the first half without forcing home this initiative, though Gary Milne went close on two occasions. Simpson, overlapping on the left, launched several promising raids and got over a succession of dangerous crosses.
Darwen, with the slope in their favour after the interval, looked more aggressive and their pacey forwards twice threatened Nicky Whitfield’s goal, first shooting narrowly wide and then bringing a creditable save from the keeper as he sprang to his left to push the ball for a corner. The goals came within two minutes of each other. In a fast break, Darwen’s Miller outpaced Stephen Ridley to beat Whitfield with a fast ground shot after 61 minutes. The Blues struck back when Gate charged down the ring wing and crossed a dangerous ball which Darwen were glad to scramble away for a corner. Renwick’s flag-kick bobbled about in the penalty area before running to Milne who forced it home at the far post. In the last fourteen minutes the Blues called up both their substitutes, first Steve Hindson and then Brent Hetherington, and it was Hindson who looked like winning the match with a fierce left-footer only for Darwen goalie Wright to flick the ball over the top in spectacular style. It was a hard, testing slog of a match towards the end and there were some heroic efforts by the midfielders, none better than that of Penrith’s Alan Batey who was always in the thick of the action. 28/10/2017 Marske United 2 Ryhope CW 0 Ebac Northern League Division One If we had such awards, Ryhope keeper Jonathan Ball would have won the nomination for man of the match by a country mile. And he only played for just under an hour of the game. He pulled off four superb saves to save his teammates’ blushes. Bizarrely, at the end of the game, both teams were lucky: Marske were lucky that Ryhope didn’t snatch a point with their best chance (and one of only a few) with only four minutes to go.Ryhope were lucky that the scoreline wasn’t five or six against them, and that was all down to Ball. Those of a Ryhope disposition may want to look away now. In the first half especially, they were very poor. For the first five or 10 minutes it looked as though they thought they were still warming up. And for big chunks of the half they looked as though they’d never played together before. Whenever they did have the ball, they tried to punt it long and each time, their passes were easily intercepted by the Marske defence. Meanwhile, Marske should have been home and hosed by half-time. They played excellent controlled, passing football. Three minutes in Glen Butterworth was one-on-one with Ball who managed to spread himself and get enough on the shot to force a corner. He repeated the save 14 minutes later to deny Danny Earl. In between Ryhope’s Danny Gordon brought down Craig Gott in the area. Gott converted the penalty to make it 1-0. In the first half hour, Ryhope managed one header and one shot. James Ellis had two chances in quick succession in the 39th and 40th minute for the visitors, but they were very much against the run of play. Normal service was resumed right on the 45th minute when Ball made a terrific double save. One nil down, and it could have been so much worse for Ryhope. When Ball was substituted after picking up a knock, Marske failed to test Antony Lowerson on many occasions in the second half. Ryhope did improve in the second half, especially in the last 15 minutes when they managed to string some passed together and play more of their football in the Marske half. In the 86th minute Corey Nicholson latched on to a mis-placed Marske pass, crossed it to Josh Home-Jackson who came steaming into the box and flicked it past home keeper Robert Dean only to see it just scrape past the outside of the post. Marske doubled their lead in the 93rd minute when they finally converted one of their numerous quick breaks in the second half. Butterworth crossed the ball and Gott scored after making a far post run. The game should have been closed off far earlier. As the spectators left the ground, one Marske fan said: “We made hard work of that.” Indeed. (A final word for referee Alex Clark: I thought he was excellent – one of the best referee’s games I’ve seen this season. He got every decision right, didn’t make a drama out of decisions, didn’t turn having to talk to players into a sermon, didn’t try to be the centre of attention and kept the game going.) Date

Penrith made the short trip to Kendal Town for a very tricky test against a determined Kendal Town team. The task was made even harder with a very bobbly playing surface which made flowing football impossible for either team. Penrith had the better of the first half and dominated possession however they lacked the cutting edge and squandered several golden chances Eventually, in the 38th minute, fortune favoured Penrith when former Penrith player Sarah McCabe stretched for a header but only succeeded in diverting the ball into her own net. Penrith, almost immediately doubled their lead when Hannah Coulthard continued her rich vein of goal scoring as she diverted a Ruth Hopton’s shot into the net. HT 0-2 Into the 2nd half Kendal set up with a more ambitious formation. This had the desired effect and Kendal came roaring back into the game. Their early pressure paid dividends as they claimed a goal back. The game turned into a midfield battle from then on. Both teams had their chances but Penrith hung on for a nervy victory. FT 1-2 This Sunday the two must do it all again as Kendal travel to Frenchfields for the return fixture. Richard and his team proved to have a great deal of skill and expertise between them with a determined and creative approach to any unforeseen problems that arose. The new roof progressed smoothly and quickly despite the notorious Cumbrian weather. They were polite, friendly and considerate. they did a great job and they cleared up and whisked away the rubble afterwards. We can't praise them enough. Richard came and got the job done and saved us money. It’s been coming for a while and it was today that the lads returned to winning ways. They faced a tough task against a Penrith Royal team who have bolstered their squad. The Academy started brightly and only after a few minutes had a shot tipped over the bar. They stayed on top and got their rewards with Greg Hall striking from 20 yards with 10 minutes gone. 0-1. The Royal re grouped and came into the game with chances of their own and equalised 8 minutes later. 1-1. It was an evenly matched game from then on but it was the Academy who scored at a vital time just before halfRogers time to make it Matt 1-2 with Taryn Reay getting on the scoresheet. HT. The Academy started well after the break with Captain Shaun Askins running the midfield and they went further ahead in the 75th minute with Euan Chandler getting his 1st goal for the club with a long range effort. 1-3. Our defence looked solid and there were lots of positives to take from the game which was really pleasing. Not our best performance by a long shot but an important 3 points. Well done fella’s.

Cockermouth U16s v Penrith AFC U16s Today we travelled to Maryport to take on a strong Cockermouth team on the Netherhall 3G pitch. The boys started off brightly looking after the ball and getting through early on testing their goalkeeper. We got our reward early on too with a fantastic effort, 40 yards out lobbing the keeper, from Danny Hall giving us the lead. However it was Cockermouth that then took control of the game, dominating possession for the rest of half but it was Penrith that went in at the break leading. The second half began with a couple of changes from both sides and Cockermouth got an early equaliser through a defensive error. Penrith’s heads however did not go down and continued to press without the ball and play with the ball. Again, it was Cockermouth dominating the possession but Penrith continued to look dangerous on the break creating a host of chances. One of them chances eventually turned into a goal, with a superb ball from right back, Lewis Rogers sending Connor Gregory Dorsey through to nod over the oncoming goalkeeper. 2-1 Penrith looked set to take all 3 points going towards the dying seconds of the game, but with a lack of experience and poor game management, they gave the ball away cheaply and Cockermouth broke and equalised. The referee blew the final whistle, after a strong display the boys were bitterly disappointed with a point. Lesson learnt. Man of the Match fell to our skipper Chris Mills who was solid throughout the game. Carlisle Crusaders U9s v Penrith AFC U9s Penrith were up against a very strong and physically tough Carlisle side and the home sides sheer size took it's toll as they ran out comfortable winners. But huge credit to the newly formed Penrith side as they continually tried to play football and never gave up throughout the match. They were a credit to the club the way they kept battling and giving 100% despite the match result being out of sight. Well done everyone. Penrith AFC U10's travelled to Cockermouth for a Sunday lunchtime kick off against their JFC U10 team. Needing a good result after the last game defeat, Penrith started well and went 1-0 up through Zane Romano. Cockermouth came back into the game and somehow ended up going into half time 2-1 up. We were missing 3 key players, including goalkeeper and our top scoring captain. This didn't show in the second half as we put in a great team performance, equalizing through Max Raune. With the game going into the last minutes, Penrith won a series of corners, looking for the winner. Then with the last kick of the game, Captain Louie Eyrl volleyed in the winner direct from a corner. Men of the match were all 9 Penrith players. Penrith AFC Panthers v Cockermouth Galaxy Panthers ran out comfortable winners in this U13 match with 8 different players getting on the score sheet. They all played some quick, neat attacking football and never looked in any trouble in defence. Huge credit to Cockermouth and especially their goalkeeper who made a string of fantastic saves and the whole team kept going until the final whistle.
