Welcome to Frenchfield

Good evening and a warm welcome to our visitors Carlisle United. The Bonny Blues and the Blues once again meet in the much appreciated tradition of pre-season preparation. Both playing pre-season friendlies at the weekend. Our lads travelled to Sheepmount to play Northbank, Grant Davidson and Johnny Murray taking one each saw us through to finish 2 – 0, which was a good pre- season workout for the lads. It was a tale of two teams in one city at Gillford park as Carlisle United took on Carlisle City which came in as 4 - 0 victory for United.

Our boys started well Saturday 1st July when they travelled to Siloth with goals from Robbie Hebson, Johnny Murray and Shauny Gardner to make it 3 – 1. It is of course early stages in the preparations for the teams and there is still a way to go with another five fixtures. The rest of our pre-season and opening games are on page 22.

With the extra preliminary round of the FA Cup draw and FA Vase draw taking place Friday 7th July, we have been drawn at home in the extra preliminary round of the FA Cup against West Auckland Town. The tie will take place at Frenchfield Park on Saturday 5th August, 3pm kick off. The winners will be at home to Seaham Red Star or Whitley Bay on Saturday 19th August. In the 1st round of the FA Vase we’re away to Northern League Division 2 side Esh Winning. The tie will take place on Saturday 9th September.

I am not sure how it happened but for those of you who have been collecting a match day programme for the past 15 years, you may have noticed something a bit different.

After 15 years of co-ordinating the Penrith match day programme, Brian Kirkbride has passed over the baton in part, not fully, for a change. Filling the hole of one person as you will notice takes about 6 - 7 people and I am pleased to say Brian is one of those.

He’ll hopefully still be helping and still making a contribution in some areas of the programme. One of the things he is helping me with is the history of the club in a new feature which will be ‘Back to Southend Road’ which you may want to help me with to.

I’ll be gathering old stories, sharing newspaper cuttings, photos and programmes which in short is for the match day programme but will be for something in the future as we move towards the Club’s 125 years. Meanwhile, a big thank to Brian for those 15 years on the programme, which I am sure you’ll all agree has been an amazing achievement and much appreciated by thousands of fans.

Something else a bit different you might also have noticed is that Eden FM 107.5 is here this evening, which we hope will be a new and regular addition to matches, home and away as we look to build a team of people that like to talk about their club live on air on a regular basis. Jim Nicols - Pitchside Report

I would like to extend a warm welcome to Keith and his team to Frenchfields for tonight’s game. Our relationship with Carlisle United has developed over the past year and it is a privilege to be able to compete against them again tonight.

It was fantastic to see Morgan Bacon earn a professional deal after a short loan spell with us last year, and hopefully we may be able to help more players on their journey if it’s beneficial to their development.

We started our pre-season two weeks ago and have recruited Ally Morrison to the club to work on the players’ fitness and we feel that the group is in good shape.

Our squad has changed, losing a few players to Gretna, but we feel that our strength in depth leaves us in a stronger position with the acquisitions that we have made.

A lot of our squad from last season have received offers from various clubs but have shown a loyalty to Penrith and where they see the club going.

There has been a lot of changes around the ground itself, the committee having worked hard to try and improve many aspects of the club. The pitch looks fantastic and I’m sure will improve further, the closer we get to the season. The changing rooms have been improved and the club feels a lot more professional.

Tonight will be a tough game for us against a professional side and we know we have to remain disciplined when out of possession. It is a fantastic opportunity for our players to test themselves against a full time outfit and they are games where we learn a lot about the characters in our squad and exactly where we are fitness wise.

Welcome to the Visitors

Photos by Amy Nixon Snaps shots of some Carlisle United Good times and achievements The club was formed on 17 May 1904 at Shaddongate United’s Annual General Meeting when the club’s members voted to change the club’s name to Carlisle United. The newly formed club initially played at Milhome Bank and later at Devonshire Park, finally settling at their current home Brunton Park situated on Warwick Road.

Some say there is a myth that still persists to this day that the club was formed from the amalgamation of Shaddongate United and Carlisle Red Rose. Carlisle United actually defeated Carlisle Red Rose 3–0 in the 1905–06 FA Cup Carlisle were elected to the Football League Third Division North in 1928 replacing Durham City.

They won their first game in the league, the side of Prout, Coulthard, Cook, Harrison, Ross, Pigg, Agar, Hutchison, McConnell, Ward and Watson beating Accrington Stanley 3–2.

In 1949, the club had the distinction of being the first club to appoint Bill Shankly as their manager.

Carlisle were promoted from the fourth division in 1962. They then won consecutive promotions in 1964 and 1965, and established themselves as a Second Division side.

They were promoted to the First Division for the 1974–75 season. Carlisle won their first three fixtures of the top division campaign to top the English football pyramid, with the likes of Chris Balderstone (it was Balderstone’s penalty that put Carlisle top) and Bobby Parker who both made at least 375 league appearances for Carlisle.

In 1994–95, Carlisle finally achieved their first major success in 13 years by lifting the Division Three title. David Reeves scored 25 league goals to help Carlisle achieve their long-awaited success which ended their eight-year ordeal in the league’s basement division. They also reached the Autoglass Windscreens Trophy Final but missed out on the trophy after conceding a sudden death extra time goal against Birmingham City.

In 1996–97, young players like Rory Delap, Matt Jansenand Lee Peacock were crucial as Carlisle bounced back from relegation to achieve promotion back to Division Two at the first time of asking.

The promotion joy was accompanied by a penalty shoot-out triumph over Colchester United in the Auto Windscreens Trophy Final, in which Tony Caig pulled off some impressive goalkeeping heroics.

In 2004–05, Carlisle returned to the Football League at the first time of asking by winning the Conference National promotion playoffs.

Carlisle’s excellent form under Paul Simpson continued into the following season as they returned to the Football League with a bang, clinching the League Two title.

In 2006–07, Carlisle become the first visiting team to win a League One match at the Keepmoat Stadium, the new home of Doncaster Rovers, after a 2–1 win on 3 February 2007. The win was part of a sequence of games in which the club staged a late run for a play-off place; they finished the season in 8th place, their highest league finish for 22 years. Average league crowds were the highest for 30 years.

In November 2009, the Blues reached the third round of the FA Cup for the first time in nine years, after a 3–1 win over Norwich City in a foggy evening fixture at Brunton Park, before losing 3–1 to Everton on 3 January 2010 in the third round at Goodison Park.

On 9 February 2010, Carlisle defeated Leeds United in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Northern Final, winning 6–5 on peanlties after the match finished 4–4 on aggregate over two legs, with Leeds winning the second leg 2–3 at Brunton Park. Carlisle thus became the first club to reach the final of this competition five times.

In April 2011, Carlisle won the 2011 Football League Trophy after a 1–0 win against Brentford.

Penrith Players of the Future

I’ve been involved with junior football for some 12 years now carrying a number of different positions in the club from Parent to Juniors Chairman.

I have managed a team right through to U16’s. We finished junior football the season before last and both myself and coach Bob Norman met with the club to put forward a proposed philosophy of youth development and set up a youthful Academy side that competed in Westmorland League Div 3.

Most of these lads were 16 years of age and faced a huge challenge in stepping up into adult football. They coped really well and played some wonderful football and our decision was a huge success

We all have worked really hard over the years to install a structure in the club that provides a route from junior football right through to our senior sides.

Our current set up is really starting to develop now with a number of players who will get their chance in the future without a doubt with some already having involvement in the senior set up.

I stepped aside as academy manager at the end of last season to undertake a role to facilitate this player development throughout the club. Christian Hunter has taken the reigns of the Academy with Bob Norman who continues as coach and I know they are building an even stronger squad from last season.

Our reserves side are doing really well too and this team provides opportunities for both Academy players and senior players to play at a competitive level together with developing players to compete in the senior side.

This structure will continue to be developed and I will take my role really seriously to ensure the club starts to produce some home grown players who can play for not only us but might even make it at a higher level.

Penrith Ladies and Girls Report

A review of 2016 -17 For the third season running Penrith AFC Ladies have finished as the highest ranked Cumbrian club in the North West Women’s Regional Football League.

Their Runners Up finish in Division 1 (North) is something that they are rightly proud of however it is tinged with a hint of frustration having narrowly missed out on the title and promotion by the smallest of margins.

Manager Simon Savage said “Finishing as Runners Up in this very competitive league is a superb achievement for a small town club like ourselves however we are all a little disappointed that we got so close to the title but missed out on the final game of the season. We got ourselves into a great position but unable to cross the finishing line and, if we are honest, we only have ourselves to blame. We have now all had time to reflect on what was still a superb season for the club and hopefully we are all stronger for our experiences”.

Penrith AFC Ladies posted an exceptional league record for the 2016/17 season only losing 1 out of their 16 league games. Their miserly defence only conceded 10 goals in those 16 league games.

In the Cups Penrith AFC Ladies were Runners Up in the Cumberland Womens County Cup narrowly losing 1-0 to Carlisle United Ladies in the final. In the FA Womens Cup Penrith AFC Ladies progressed to the 3rd Qualifying Round and claimed £950 prize money on the way.

Ambitious Penrith AFC Ladies are striving to be at the forefront of Womens football in Cumbria and for the 2017/18 season will be running 2 teams: Penrith AFC Ladies will continue to play in the North West Womens Regional League while Penrith AFC Development have been accepted into the Lancashire County Womens League.

Ladies manager Simon Savage said “We currently have in excess of 40 Ladies wanting to play football at our club. The natural thing was to create a Development team which will allow our younger players to develop in a competitive environment. It really is an exciting time for Womens football at the club and Penrith AFC is certainly the place to be”.

Girls football is also thriving at the club.

In 2016/17 Penrith AFC Diamonds (U16 Girls) claimed the Cumbria Womens U16 League title with only a single defeat all season while the Rubies (U15 Girls) also finished a creditable mid table position in this league. At the younger age groups Penrith AFC Girls has developed their ‘Angels’ section.

This coach heavy section of the club caters for Girls from the ages of 4 to 11 years old. The aim is to introduce football in a fun and friendly way within a safe environment. Angels coach Kelly Pearson said “We want the girls to develop not just as footballers but also as young people. You can really see the girls coming out of their shells and developing their self confidence”.

The plan certainly seems to be working with this section of the club developing very quickly. Indeed Penrith AFC Angels expects to have teams at U8, U9, U10 and U12 age groups.

Penrith AFC Junior Boys

Penrith AFC Juniors have boys teams from U7s through to U16s and offer fully qualified coaches in a safe and friendly environment.

We also have U8s, U10s, U12s, U16s and a development team on the girls side.

Last season a number of our teams reached their respective cup finals with many of them lifting the silverware.

We play in the Penrith and District Junior league and also compete in various mini soccer tournaments throughout the summer.

From the Files of the Cumberland Westmorland Herald 25 Years Ago Penrith kicked off the new soccer season with a 3-0 home win in a friendly game with Dalbeattie side Thrieve Rovers in which several new faces appeared for the Blues.

Scorers were Brent Hetherington and Steve Hindson. A total of seventeen players took to the field and there were several good performances from new signings.

Former Carlisle City goalkeeper, 17-year-old Stephen Bellas, who has just signed for Penrith, replaced the absent Nicky Whitfield.

Other new faces who played in the first half were former Carlisle United YTS player Simon Reay at left full-back; Peter Thornton, of Kirkby Stephen, in central defence; and Simon Toppin, a former Newcastle Town midfield player who now lives in the Penrith area. He hopes to sign for the Blues, work permitting.

In the second half, Paul Renwick stepped into the full back role and Dean Williams played in midfield.

Both played for Westmorland League side Wetheriggs last season. Gary Milne, formerly of Carlisle City, played up front.

Another former Wetheriggs player, central defender Stephen Ridley also signed but was away on holiday.

Penrith schoolboy Alistair Morrison is in with a chance of an England under-15 soccer cap if he impresses selectors at a national trial at Keele University in Staffordshire on 24th August.

Alistair, of Barndale, Sockbridge, is the only Cumbria schoolboy to be invited to the trial where scouts from the country’s top professional football sides will be keeping their eyes open for talent.

A pupil at Ullswater High School, he plays soccer at county level and for Castletown under-15s where he was last season’s player of the year.

Several clubs, including Carlisle United and Dundee United have shown interest in Alistair, whose favoured position is central midfield.

Soccer, however, is not his only talent. He is a keen boxer and member of the Border Harriers Athletics Club as is his brother Andrew. Alistair recently broke the Ullswater School 80m record, once held by his brother, who is the current 1500m champion.

Alistair’s younger brother and sister, Alex and Kirsty, are also keen on sport, and parents Bill and Shirley Morrison both ran for the county. Mr. Morrison praised Ullswater School PE teachers Nick Ellery and Steve Kurzych, and Peter Renwick, of Castletown Football Club, for their efforts

Eden FM on Tour Since its first outside broadcast from Toppin Memorial Hall at Skelton during it’s first 4 week trial transmission at the end of 2011, the face of your community radio has changed and evolved.

The days of our trusty old Landrover Discovery with its 9 metre mast on, our ex BBC outside broadcasting vehicle we acquired from a yard in Eastbourne on the Sussex coast, have moved on.

Technology has changed and Eden FM has also had to evolve.

As a radio station we have to be seen and not just heard. The team are in a busy time, whilst pushing forward with their new studio build at Mosytn Hall most weekends and many weekends, we are out and about, whatever the weather.

Between 1st July and 15th July we will have completed at least four outside broadcasts and at the time of this update, completing a 10am – 4pm transmission from the Skelton show and a 12 – 4pm transmission in the grounds of Appleby Castle during the Appleby Carnival.

So here we are tonight live from the Frenchfield Stadium transmitting from around 6pm until it’s all over. Next week it’s a full day live in Market Square for the Penrith on a Plate food festival.
