Welcome to Frenchfield
Good afternoon and a warm welcome to our visitors, West Auckland and to all those who have made the journey here today, near or far. Welcome Scott Jackson, the Penrith Town Mayor and Council representatives from Eden District Council. It’s the first weekend of August. Are you ready for the road to Wembley as we take part in the oldest association football competition in the world? Known officially as the Football Association Challenge Cup, it was first played during the 1871–72 season. It was all down to a man born in Sheffield called Charles William Alcock. After joining the FA Committee in 1866, in the same year on 31st March 1866, Alcock was the first soccer player ever to be ruled offside. Alcock served as FA Secretary from 1870 to 1895, before serving as Vice-President, but it was on 20th July 1871, Alcock, in his position as FA Secretary, proposed ‘That it is desirable that a Challenge Cup should be established in connection with the Association, for which all clubs belonging to the Association should be invited to compete’. Thus, the FA Cup, the world’s first national football tournament, based on Alcock’s experience of inter-house ‘sudden death’ competition at Harrow, was born. Alcock didn’t just come up with the idea he played in. There were fifteen teams that took part in the first competition in 1872, with Alcock captaining the winning Wanderers side. The final was played at The Oval, since Alcock had become Secretary of Surrey CCC the previous month. He was the journalist responsible for compiling the first “Football Annual” in 1868. Why would I know this? Well, I didn’t have to look it all up! As a child, mad about football, to keep me interested at school, I was told by my teacher that the town where I lived, now a city, was where the man who created the FA died. Hopefully you may now know something you didn’t know about the FA Cup. Thank you to all those who have helped with the reports, photos and supported us with the match day programme. Enjoy the match and have a safe journey home. Lee Quinn

I would like to extend a warm welcome to the FA Cup tie against West Auckland today including all players, officials and staff from the football club. It’s been a long time since we appeared in our last competitive fixture and I know all of the players are raring to go and begin the season. West Auckland are a much improved side under new management, and having watched them against Gretna 2008 a couple of weeks ago, I know that this will be a difficult tie. The last two months have seen a large change in personnel in our squad, with nine new additions coming in, fighting for first team places. A big boost to the squad was the commitment of the players from last year who have stayed, a large number received lucrative offers to join other clubs but they have bought in to what we are trying to do and the brand of football we are trying to play and I’m sure they will help the new players settle in and continue to push the club forward.
The pre-season schedule has been demanding for the players. A new fitness coach has delivered, at times, quite brutal sessions that have pushed the players both mentally and physically. They’ve done hill sprints, worked in pairs to carry tree trunks round Frenchfields and pushed sledges stacked with concrete blocks down the roads. The players look in really good shape and I hope this can give us an advantage over other teams at the start of the season. I hope you enjoy the game and support the players, particularly the new young lads coming in to the team. Jim Nicols
Welcome to the Visitors
West Auckland History West Auckland have a unique history - they are double World Cup winners! In 1909 and 1911 the mining side travelled the lengthy and expensive journey to Italy and beat their club opponents to win the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy, also dubbed football’s first World Cup. The Club was founded in 1893 and played their first matches in the Auckland and District League. The following years saw ‘West’ move around several local leagues until in 1909 they were elected into the Northern league for the first time. The famous ‘World Cup’ exploits which saw ‘West’ win the Sir Thomas Lipton trophy outright after a second trip to Italy in 1911 also caused them extreme financial problems. This resulted in the club being disbanded in 1912 and the ‘World Cup’ being sold to pay off debts. Two years later they were back in business and spent the following 20 years moving around the local leagues including a single season, in 1919, in the Northern League, changing their name to St. Helens Utd, for that season only. In 1934 they were once again elected to the Northern League, taking the place of Esh Winning and have retained membership ever since. The club’s first honours were gained in 1960, winning the League championship by two points from newcomers Whitley Bay.The success was due to a good start to the season and to fine teamwork, for which their reputation was beginning to grow. The same season saw them reach the quarter final stage of the F.A. Amateur Cup drawing 1-1 at home but losing 2-0 at Hendon. 1961 was probably the best season in the Club’s history, not only was the Northern League championship won by four points from near neighbours and arch rivals Bishop Auckland, ‘West’ also reached the final of the F.A. Amateur Cup losing 2-1 to Walthamstow Avenue at Wembley. For the next 30 years ‘West’ had very barren times until 1991 when they won the 2nd Division championship gaining promotion to the 1st Division, where they remained for six seasons until relegation in 1996/97. ‘West’ quickly bounced back in 1997/98 when they finished runners up. 1998/99 was a very exciting season in the Club’s history when they reached the 1st Round proper of the F.A. Cup for the third time, (Barnsley 1959 & Stockport 1961) with an away tie against Yeovil Town. After a 2-2 draw at Yeovil and a 1-1 draw at West Auckland, a penalty shoot-out saw Yeovil through.
The Club also finished a credible 5th in the League that season as they did also in 1999/2000 and 2005/06. David Bayles took charge in the summer of 2005 and led the side to 5th place in his first season (2005/06) and then 6th place in the following season. 2007/08 began with an FA Cup run that saw West within minutes of a place in the final qualifying round of the FA Cup before defeat in a replay to Bamber Bridge. After his shock resignation, Lee Ellison had a short lived spell as manager before Phil Owers took over and steadied the side and led them to escape the drop zone.as the new player manager. However after performances slumped to a worryingly low and 10 games without a win, Ray Gowan came in but even he was unable to arrest the slide and promptly resigned at the end of the campaign. Owers departed early in the 08/09 season with Brian Fairhurst appointed as Manager. Exciting news filtered in throughout the summer of 2009. Firstly, West Auckland were able to retain their First Division status due to Sunderland Nissan folding. The Club then received sensational news that, to celebrate their Centenary of winning the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy, Juventus had agreed to a re-match in Italy. Shortly afterwards Hartlepool legend Brian Honour was appointed the new manager in the hot seat. Brian and his successor Wilf Constantine struggled to get West back on track and both had short lived spells in charge. For the third season in a row, a third manager was appointed - Peter Dixon arrived on Monday 7th December 2009, swapping a promotion push with Crook for a relegation battle. West stunned the Northern League with some superb results and finished the season in a scarcely believable 16th place despite having a -41 goal difference and 5 points from 19 matches when Peter took the reins. 2010/11 saw substantial progress made on and off the field. Peter Dixon’s side broke Club records for their highest ever points tally on the way to finishing in 6th. There were many memorable results including wins over champions Spennymoor Town, runners up Consett and FA Vase treble winners Whitley Bay. They also came close to causing a shock at Conference North high fliers Workington in the FA Cup. Although it culminated in a case of so near but so far, West had a quite extraordinary campaign in 2011/12 that saw them play at Wembley in the FA Vase Final. However hopes of elusive silverware were dashed in a 2-0 defeat to Dunston.
They also finished as runners up in two more competitions, being pipped to the title by Spennymoor and losing 4-1 by Team Northumbria days after their Wembley appearance. The 2012/13 season saw West bow out early on in the FA Vase in a rematch of the previous year final whilst in the League a poor end meant West slipped down to fourth late on. . The 2013/14 season saw West return to Wembley in the FA Vase final, this time against Sholing FC, a 1-0 defeat solely down to the heroics of the opposition goalkeeper and the inability of the West forwards to score. Also a productive FA cup run to the 3rd qualifying round where west were knocked out by Hednesford. West finished 5th in a season which saw them play 18 league fixtures in the final 4 weeks after a season extension was rejected. Barely two months into the 2014/15, Peter Dixon was dismissed as manager following increased tension between manager and board, that season saw 3 permanent manager and 2 caretakers, and the season saw Stephen Skinner leave at the end of the season. June 2015 and West were without a manager again, Up stepped former Boro striker Andy Campbell, who had just lead Norton and Stockton Ancients to promotion and success in the second division cup. He hastily rebuilt the team & finished mid table with 50 points to easily avoid relegation. Andy started his second season with Richie Storrs but after 10 games & only 1 win they stood down. They were replaced with a joint management team of Darren Williams, ex Whitby & ex Sunderland Player & Steven Skinner, also a former pro with Carlisle & Queen of the South. This was Skinners 2nd time at West. Mark Hudson who stood in as interim Manager continued as 1st team coach & player. AT the halfway point of the season it was decided to dispense with the services of Darren Williams & the management of the team became the sole responsibility of Steve Skinner. Steve Skinner resigned before the end of 206-17 season leaving West to secure a place in the 1st Division by having to win their last match which they managed. During the summer break Gary Forrest & Stuart Niven were appointed as Manager & Assistant & they began to build a squad to compete for the 2017-18 campaign.

It’s been a busy and exciting summer both on and off the pitch for Penrith AFC. Manager Jim Nichols has been exceptionally busy recruiting young local lads to join his already quality filled squad. Elliott Bousfield, Dean Crozier, Jamie Hodgson, Johnny Blake, Jack Dickinson, Adam Copland, Chris Wraighte and Stuart Dixon have joined the Bonny Blues who had already been given a boost with the news that skipper Grant Davidson and record goalscorer Martyn Coleman had agreed to stay. We played Silloth, Milnthorpe Corinthians and Northbank and put in some encouraging performances and the squad looked ultra fit after the fitness work that Ali Morrison had been putting in at extensive training sessions for the lads. Ben France © The Carlisle United friendly would look like a one sided a fair but Penrith AFC ran toe to toe with their professional opponents with an obvious step up of quality from the league 2 side. We had a very impressive result against Northern Premier League Kendal Town with Bousfield, Hodgson, Murray Jones and Murray getting on the score sheet in a 4.1 victory. We also saw off a physical Carlisle City side at Gilford Park 3-2. We narrowly lost to Workington in what was a re run of May’s Cumberland Cup final. Off the pitch Frenchfield Park is unrecognisable after the pitch got relaid in early May. There’s also new dugouts, flooring and a range of brand new sponsors keen to get involved in what promises to be an exciting season. Saturday, 11th August, 2002 Penrith continued their warm-up for the start of the Northern League Division II season with a 2-1 win over town side Carleton Rovers, followed by a defeat at home to Annan Athletic. In both games, as in previous warm-up matches, the Blues conceded early goals. Manager Dave Heslop said Tuesday’s 3-2 defeat by Annan included some sloppy mistakes which need to be cut out before the season begins. But he added: “I have said to the lads all summer that pre-season results aren’t too important. It is all about playing, fitness and getting used to the shape. But it all has to be right for our first game against Shotton Comrades next Saturday. Last Saturday, Penrith travelled to Carleton Rovers, newly promoted to Westmorland League Division I. On a hot afternoon, the home side took the lead when Paul Pattinson fired in from 25 yards, and they held that advantage at half-time. But Penrith equalised just after the break through Willie Paul and then scored what proved to be the winner when Wayne Robertson, pushed up front from defence, headed home Matty Lea’s cross. For Tuesday’s game with Annan, Heslop included former Penrith player Jeff Henderson in his squad. Striker Henderson, who took a year out from playing, has been training with the Blues and is in talks with a view to signing. And he made an instant impression, coming on as a substitute on the hour and scoring twice. And he made an instant impression, coming on as a substitute on the hour and scoring twice.
But by then, Penrith were already behind with the visitors netting twice in the first half to lead 2-0 at half time. Henderson reduced the deficit before a mix-up in the home defence allowed Annan to restore their two-goal cushion, but Henderson’s second kept Penrith in touch right to the final whistle. Heslop said: I am very pleased with the football we are playing and our fitness and enthusiasm, but we cannot go on conceding sloppy goals through individual mistakes.

In an age of £200million footballers and 60,000 capacity all-seater stadiums, it can be easy for many fans at the elite end of football to forget the simple pleasure of a windswept terrace, a proper 3 o’clock kick off and players you might actually have met in the street. Penrith Association Football Club represents the true soul of football, a local institution held together and thriving by the dedication of the people who run it and not the wash of cash. Here Is place where a family day out can take it in the full passion of sport, the highs and lows of success and defeat and the atmosphere of a shared experience. Football is hugely important to me as it provides a link to a shared family past. It was my father who instilled a love of the game in me and a deep love of Manchester United. He isn’t with us anymore but I feel in every match I see the same hope of jubilation and fear of despair I experienced watching a certain Champions League final with him as a child. We do it every week up and down the land but there is something magical about putting your faith in those eleven players (and the odd super-sub!) Penrith Town Mayor Councillor Scott Jackson

Penrith Players of the Future
Exciting times and looking forward to the season ahead Since my last update there has been a number of really positive developments in the senior structure which strengthens our philosophy of youth & player development and establishes a management team which is strong and robust with plenty of experience. I am delighted to announce that Lee Stockdale has been appointed as our new Reserve Manager and last seasons manager Mark Bell has agreed to be his assistant. This is a really positive step forward for the club and I and everyone at the club wish all our management team the best of success for the forthcoming season. Matt Rogers A special mention and a huge thank you has to go to reserve captain Richie Arnold who has stepped into the role whilst we have been looking for a Reserve manager and kept the lads informed with progress together with arranging pre season games and training. Another appointment has been made in the Academy management structure too with Gary Baily agreeing to become assistant to manager Christian Hunter. Gary has a wealth of experience In Westmorland League football and will be a great addition to the structure. These appointments complete our structure and we can now concentrate on the development of the management team and player progression and development.
Lee Stockdale
All squads are looking strong with some real quality players being added and the future looks bright for our juniors to progress through the ranks to hopefully achieve their ambitions of playing for the senior side in the Northern League. Penrith Town who also has an association with the club are also looking strong with additions of their own and under Liam Byrne are looking to compete and improve on a good solid season last season. Mark Bell
Gary Bailey All in all the club have never been in such a strong position and the structure that has been put in place and is now established makes Penrith AFC the place for local lads to come and play their football with the confidence of top quality coaching and the chance to play at a high level. I for one can’t wait for the new season to start to see our teams in action and put together a player progression program to put to all the management team to see our own grown players feed our senior setup. Penrith Ladies and Girls Report
Youth football is thriving at Penrith AFC Ladies and the club is taking active steps to support the girls as they make the transition towards senior Ladies football. With this in mind the club recently embarked on a Youth Football Tour to Northern Ireland. The Youth squad made up of 18 girls aged 15, 16 and 17 year old were based on the Antrim coast and played 3 tough matches on consecutive days.
On the field the Youth team performed superbly well winning 2 of their 3 matches. First off, they beat Carmoney U17 Girls 6-2 with goals from Becca Alderson(3), Becca Johnson, Georgia Campbell and Livvy Johnston. This was followed by another tough game against Ballymena U17 Girls with Penrith eventually running out 6-1 winners after a very tought battle. Goals came from Becca Alderson(2), Livvy Johnston(2), Georgia Campbell and Holly MacFadzean. In the final game a tiring Penrith came up against a very strong Linfield Swifts U17 team who included two Northern Ireland youth internationals in their team. Penrith produced a good performance again but were well beaten 7-1 with Georgia Campbell again scoring.
As well as the challenges on the field, the Youth squad also faced a series of bonding challenges off the field including; walking the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge, performing a six part team building activity and finally taking part in an extreme coastering activity. Manager Simon Savage said “The idea was to take the girls out of their comfort zone both on and off the pitch. This was certainly the case and this really brought the best out of girls and they have had to support each other through some difficult times. On the field they were playing opposition of a far superior level than they have come up against before.. They really had to up their game and rise to the challenge. Off the field the girls were taken way out of their comfort zone by experienced instructors. In the coastering activity many of the girls had to face real fears and they had to support each other through this”The outcome has been spectacular. The squad has bonded strongly and produced a series of superb performances on the playing field. On top of this, they have had an experience that is bound to live long in their memory. Thanks to Penrith Lions for their support in the tour. Queen of the South Ladies 2 – 8 Penrith AFC Ladies Penrith AFC Ladies continued their preseason preparations with a trip over the border to play Queen of the South Ladies on their 4G Palmerston Park pitch. Penrith started to game in sloppy fashion and looked disorganised as Queens raced to a 2-0 lead within 10 mins. Queens were playing well and it appeared Penrith had a long afternoon ahead of them. However Penrith upped their tempo and moved into a higher gear. They got into their rhythm and by half time they had turned the game round to lead 2-3 with goals from Andrea Lorenzi, Paige Williams and Ruth Hopton. Ht 2-3 Penrith maintained their high tempo into the 2nd half and as the Queens team tired, Penrith pulled clear for a comfortable victory with goals from Sarah Smith(2), Nat Broad(2) and Heather Fawkes. Ft 2-8 Penrith’s squad included 16 year olds Hope Lawson, Livvy Johnston, Bobbi Noble and Daisy Savage all of whom performed well and gained valuable match experience with the Ladies squad. This weekend sees a busy schedule as Penrith AFC Ladies face Chester City Ladies on Friday evening before travelling to face Warrington Wolverines on Sunday.

The Company, many staff and Steve personally, have maintained strong support and commitment to the club spanning over three decades with strong and longstanding friendships, connections and community spirit being borne a result. Several staff have played for the club over the years and 3 are currently in the first team; the requirement for these lads to leave work early to attend training or play mid-week games has never been questioned, plus having to take time off for football related injuries never challenged. Atkinson Building Contractors continue to be committed to the sponsorship programme with Penrith Football Club, a huge thank you is extended to Steve and Atkinson Building Contractors for getting behind the Bonnie Blues.
