Welcome to Frenchfield

Good afternoon and a warm welcome to our visitors, Jarrow Roofing and to all those who have made the journey here today, the ‘Roofers’ doing a 170-180 mile round trip today. It’s the first Northern League Division One home fixture and you’ll see by reading Jim Nicols’ report and Karl Collinson’s match report, the FA Cup Extra Preliminary certainly did send us all spinning, but we’ve certainly landed with a bump in our opening two league matches. So before we get back on the road to Wembley, this weekend the lads will certainly be out for some points to earn tonight. Our opponents tonight have only played one league match, which they lost 2 - 3 at home to an informed Shildon side last weekend. Shildon have won both their opening matches and go into their 3rd league match at home tonight in 4th place against 16th place Northshields. They’ll be in cup action at the weekend against Guisborough Town, who like the Bonny Blues found themselves against an informed West Auckland side, Guisborough Town losing 9 – 0 away. It’s early days in the season for everyone, but Guisborough showed real Bounce-back-ability in their second league match earning a 3 – 3 draw away to Newton Aycliffe after being 3 – 0 down. After a 2 – 2 draw at home last night, West Auckland’s run away form was halted by Newcastle Benfield who might be another of a few contenders this season, but meanwhile with a plus 16 goal difference, they have two goal scorers that are definitely ones to watch with Nathan Fisher having 6 league goals and Amar Purewal on 3. Turn to page 16 for last night’s results and the Ebac Northern Division One table as it stands. I’ll be back on Saturday with Eden FM to switch on the live updates as we broadcast on 107.5 FM and via www.edenfm.co.uk from the Frenchfield Park Stadium, 2.30 pm till 5pm. Meanwhile, a big thank you to all those who have helped with the reports, photos and contributed to our Community match day programme. Enjoy the match this evening and have a safe journey home. After a fantastic first performance and result against West Auckland, we’ve found the going tough in the following week. On Tuesday we travelled to Sunderland RCA and led one nil at half time thanks to an excellent goal from Martyn Coleman after some good work from Chris Wraighte. Stuart Dixon produced some fantastic saves in the first half and we felt if we could have stayed ahead for fifteen minutes it was our game to win. Unfortunately we started the second half poorly and conceded two poor goals. On Saturday we had a quick return to rivalries with West Auckland. I thought in spells in the first half, we played some good stuff in forward areas and created a couple of chances. A couple of early mistakes cost us though and we were always chasing the game and although the game looks heavily one sided with the result, West Auckland didn’t create an awful lot more than they scored from, being clinical in front of goal. I feel this is something we can learn from going forward.
I feel we owe them a performance after last year, when we were missing 8 players and fielded a team with only 3 players over 21 in the squad.
In squad news, we are starting to see the return of people from holiday, Robbie Hebson and Willy Paul returning tonight. Jack Dickinson has found the commitment required at this level difficult and has requested a break from playing. This is disappointing but Tonight sees the visit of Jarrow Roofing. hopefully he will reconsider. Although they will be disappointed with I hope you enjoy the game, please continue to support their start they have signed well in the the players tonight as we look to get our first league summer and I’m sure they are in for a win of the season. better season than they had last year. Jarrow Roofing BCA FC Club History
Welcome to the Visitors
Formed: 1987. The main sponsor of Jarrow Roofing Boldon Community Association FC is Richie McLoughlin, the Managing Director of Jarrow Roofing Co. who has over 35-years experience in the roofing business. Richie has always been involved with football, initially as a Sunday League player with local clubs around South Tyneside. One day Richie had a vision of sponsoring a club that could play a bit and progress through Saturday football. Jarrow Roofing were formed ready for their inaugural season of 1987-88, beginning life in the South Tyne Senior League. When this league broke up at the end of their first season, Roofing moved to the Tyneside Amateur League, winning the Bill Dixon Cup and the League Challenge Shield. Roofing were also runners-up in both the league and the Gateshead Charity Shield. Richie sought the help of his friend, Brian Marshall, who was Chairman of the local Community Association in Boldon Colliery where there was a bit of land that perhaps could just hold a football ground. Richie began to use his weekends and borrowed machinery to build a ground after Brian had persuaded his Committee that it was a viable project. The ground slowly took shape and the club moved to the Wearside League for season 1991-92 with a completed new ground at Boldon C.A. Sports Club. After finishing as runners-up the end of the first season, losing out on the title due to goal difference, Roofing were promoted to Division One. At the end of season 1995-96, the Roofers were runners-up in Division 2 having lost out on the title due to a three points deduction. With Marske United, the champions, not having the ground facilities in place, Roofing were promoted to the Northern League Division 2. After one season, Roofing were promoted to the Northern League Division 1, again finishing as runners-up, while the club also won the Craven Cup at the first attempt beating Shotton Comrades 4-0 on Tuesday 6 May 1997 at Moor Park, Chester-le-Street. During season 2004-05, the Roofers reached the semi-final of The FA Vase before losing 2-0 on aggregate to eventual winners Didcot Town. Jarrow Roofing remained in the Northern League Division 1 until a 22nd place finish during season 2007-08 brought the first relegation in the club’s history. In Division 2 Roofing finished 16th in 2008-09 but were promoted back to the Northern League Division 1 at the end of the 2009-10 season after finishing in third place. The 2010-11 season saw Jarrow Roofing maintain their place in Division 1 after finishing 19th, but were relegated the following season after finishing in 20th position.
Roofing finished fourth, losing out on third place and automatic promotion by virtue of goal difference, in Division 2 at the end of the 2012-13 season. With Ryhope CW, who finished as runners-up, being classified as a relegated club due to failing their ground inspection, the Roofers were announced by the Northern League as promoted, yet this was against the league’s own rules and so Sunderland RCA were ultimately reprieved from relegation with Roofing remaining in Division 2. The Roofing went on to gain promotion the following season, finishing in third place in May 2014 whilst also winning the Ernest Armstrong Memorial Cup thanks to an Anth Myers winner against Washington. Upon their return to the first division, the Roofers finished in seventh position, having seen their title challenge falter when John Campbell left the club for professional football and Football League Two side Oxford United after scoring 24 goals in 19 appearances. In September 2016, South Tynesider Mark Collingwood moved from Seaham Red Star to become joint manager alongside Richie McLoughlin. Having finished in 15th place in the 2015-16 season, the Roofers improved in 2016-17 and finished in 13th place. Highest league placing: 6 – Northern League Division 1 – 2003-04. Furthest F.A. Cup run: qualifying round 2 – 2009-10, 2013-14. Furthest F.A. Vase run: semi-final – 2004-05. Ernest Armstrong Memorial Cup: winners – 2013-14. Craven Cup: winners – 1997. Monkwearmouth Cup: winners - 1994-95. Bill Dixon Cup: winners – 1990-91. Tyneside Amateur League Challenge Shield: winners – 1990-91. The Bonny Blues have enjoyed mixed emotions to begin the 2017/18 season. It couldn’t have started with a tougher fixture, hosting big spending West Auckland Town in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round at Frenchfield Park. The game began in torrential rain with the visitors enjoying the share of possession in midfield. Captain Grant Davidson made a couple of superb blocks to keep out their front 2 of Fisher and Purewal and the visitors were finding it difficult to carve out any chances as Jim Nichols’ men looked organised and disciplined. The opening goal came mid way through the 1st half starting off with the impressive Tyler Bowman bringing the ball forward and playing it into midfield through Sam Bell and Adam Main.
Ben France ©
It ended up with Main unleashing a shot from the right side of the penalty area and their keeper could only parry it into the path of Elliott Bousfield who stroked the ball home.
A fantastic start for Penrith turned into ecstasy 10 minutes later when Bousfield shot from 20 yards only for the ball to strike the foot of the post and the improving Johnny Murray rebounded the ball into the onion bag to put the Bonny Blues 2 up. £10k summer signing Nathan Fisher looked like he’d lost control of the ball inside the box and went over under a weak challenge and the referee pointed to the spot. West Auckland captain Anthony Bell tucked home the spot kick to half the deficit. Most of the 213 supporters inside Frenchfield Park expected the visitors to come out after the break and throw everything at the BonnyBlues defence but Jim Nichols clearly had his team well drilled as, much like the 1st half, they struggled to find an opening and found Penrith’s back 4, Blake, Dickinson, Davidson and Bowman, in exceptional form. Chris Wraighte had a goal chalked off for offside after Murray dispossessed the centre back, got his shot away and their keeper palmed it into the path of Wraighte who stuck it away. Penrith looked dangerous every time they broke and should have made the game safe but the final scored ended up 2.1. It was a fantastic performance and result which earned the Bonny Blues another home tie in the FA Cup against Whitley Bay.

Ben France © We travelled to Sunderland RCA on the Tuesday for our 1st Northern League Division 1 fixture. Martyn Coleman returned to the starting 11 after missing out on the FA Cup victory due to a knee injury. The prolific striker notched his first goal of the campaign to put Penrith ahead at the break but it was goalkeeper Stuart Dixon who was the hero as he made a host of superb saves. It was only a matter of time after the break until the home sides domination took its toll and despite Dixon performing heroics, RCA ran out 2.1 winners. We travelled to West Auckland Town on Saturday in an afternoon Jim Nichols would like to forget as the home side showed their obvious quality and ran out 5-1 winners. Matty Moynan scored a consultation goal in what clearly proved that West Auckland will be challenging at the top of Northern League Division 1 come April.

Saturday, 18th August, 2012 Manager Billy Williams called on his players to learn from mistakes which were made in their first competitive fixture of the season, an FA Cup defeat at Crook town. The Blues went down 2-1 in County Durham on Saturday with newly-installed boss Williams reflecting on a “dire” first half display from his side, who showed more encouraging signs after the break. “I thought it was disappointing from the first whistle. It looked as if all the pre-season work had been thrown out of the window which was disappointing after all the hard work we had put in, not just on my part but from everybody, the players included,” he said. “In the second half we controlled the game and possibly could have come away with a win. We have got some young and inexperienced lads and hopefully they will learn from it.” Although Crook Town ply their trade in the Second Division of the Northern League, they have assembled a mixture of experience and youth with a view to challenging for promotion to Penrith’s league. The opening exchanges were fairly even, but after the first quarter of an hour Crook began to exert their authority and Penrith found it difficult to cope with the attacks down the flanks. They looked to have weathered the Crook storm but, on 27 minutes, they seemed to switch off when Crook were awarded a throw-in on the right. The long throw caught the Penrith defence napping and the ball cannoned around the six-yard box until the much-travelled Warren Byrne poked it over the line. Soon after, winger Rob Bird was put through on goal with only goalkeeper James Holland to beat, but his chipped shot landed agonisingly wide of the post. Holland then made point-blank saves to deny David Paul and Byrne, but was well-beaten after he punched a corner clear: the ball fell to Craig Hughes on the edge of the 18-yard box and the forward hammered his shot into the net to give the hosts a 2-0 half-time lead. The Blues came out for the second half and played the football they have been throughout the pre-season friendly games, taking the game to the hosts. For much of the rest of the game, they had Crook on the ropes but found it difficult to break down the defence. The manager rang the changes with half an hour to go, bringing on Martin Strong, Karl Jackson and Charlie Bowman, and it was the latter who got to the by-line and crossed for Davidson to get a powerful header towards goal, only for him to be denied by veteran keeper Barry Poskett. Soon after, Penrith were given a lifeline when a defender used his arm to block a shot and team captain Steven Ainsworth hammered home the resulting penalty.
Crook went right down to the other end and were awarded a penalty themselves for a similar offence but Holland proved equal to it and turned the ball round the post. Although Crook were running out of steam, they did enough to hold on and progressed to the next round. Penrith: Holland, Nugent, Wood, Barclay, Gray, Paul, (Bowman), B. Jackson (K. Jackson), Ainsworth, Coleman, Davidson, Allison (Strong). Subs not used: Gill, Murray-Jones. Saturday, 19th August, 1967 Two newly-signed forwards make their Northern League débuts for Penrith today when their program opens with the visit of Blyth Spartans. Impressive in the pre-season trial games, the Culgaith youngster Brian Williams gets the inside left berth. Williams began his career in local junior football and has had spells with Darlington and Town Law Town. Peter Brockbank, from Gretna, is on the right wing. Brockbank has had Carlisle and District League experience with Gretna and Carlisle. Jock Kinnear has been given the striking role in attack and the absence of leading scorer Albert Clapperton from pre-season matches has raised a question mark in many supporters’ minds. It appears that Clapperton is somewhat undecided about which club he is going to play for this season. His name has been associated with a return to Crook Town. Absent from today’s line-up is fullback Willie Pearson, formerly with Queen of the South, who is on holiday. Lewthwaite moves over to the right flank to accommodate reserve Leslie Bell as left fullback. Incidentally, one of Penrith’s longest serving players and former skipper Terry Mulryan, will play for Alston this year in their first season of the Carlisle and District League. Mulryan has been with Penrith since his schooldays, joining them from Ullswater United. He has filled practically every position on the field, mainly fullback, and has been capped for Cumberland. The team today will be B. Hodgson, J. Lewthwaite, L. Bell, B. Blamire, R. Thornton, A. Reay, P. Brockbank, R. Hodgson, J. Kinnear, B. Williams, J. Render.

First of all I’d like to wish Jim and the lads the best of luck tonight in our first home league game verses Jarrow Roofing. We had a great start with the victory in the FA Cup but a tough couple of games since. Let’s hope for 3 points tonight!
Matt Rogers
It’s been a challenging couple of weeks for me with the surprise announcement on Wednesday last week that our Academy Manager Christian Hunter and his assistant Gary Bailey had decided to step down from their roles due to important personal commitments. I would like to go on record in thanking Christian and Gary for their contribution and wish them well in the future.
The shock resignations came on the eve of a friendly with our reserves at Frenchfield Park. That meant I had to reform last seasons management team in myself and Bob Norman and it was very enjoyable to catch up with the lads and see some of the exciting additions to the squad. They conducted themselves very well and for large parts of the game gave a great account of themselves which I was really pleased with but our Reserves ran out 5-0 winners but this was a little flattering I feel. We have acted quickly to bring in a replacement and I am delighted to announce we have appointed a new Academy manager. His name is Andrew Richardson but is known as “Monkey”.
Andrew Richardson Penrith AFC Academy Manager
He is a Level 2 qualified coach and has been managing teams for years. His philosophy is very much in line with the clubs and is passionate about the development of youth players and their progression through our structure.
Colin Watson ©
Colin Watson © He couldn’t wait to start and was really looking forward to meeting the lads at Tuesdays training. I would like to welcome Monkey to the club and I feel delighted to get an experienced manager/coach in position with good football qualifications and credentials. We now look forward and to the forthcoming weekends fixtures. Our Reserves are looking in great shape with Lee Stockdale and Mark Bell putting them through a good pre season culminating in a 4-2 victory against Dalston on Sunday at Frenchfield. They travel to Endmoor KGR on Saturday for their curtain raiser so I wish them the best of luck. The Academy don’t get their campaign started until Wednesday 23rd where they take a trip up the A66 to Kirkby Stephen. Once again I wish Monkey the best of luck and hope for a good start against this newly entered team in the league. Penrith Town start at home to a tough, physical Endmoor KGR Reserves and I know Liam Byrne has prepared well and we wish them a good start too. I myself have a well needed holiday booked and return on Saturday 3rd September when I plan to get my teeth into my new role which hopefully means progressing players through our structure. Penrith AFC Ladies continued their preseason programme with 2 fixtures in Cheshire. On Friday evening Penrith travelled to face Chester City Ladies and then on Sunday they returned down the M6 for a fixture against Warrington Wolverines. Chester City Ladies 0 – 10 Penrith AFC Ladies Chester City started the game brightly and pinned Penrith in their own half for the opening 15 mins. However on a beautiful playing surface Penrith soon got their passing game going and took the lead when Chez Brierley’s shot hit the cross bar and Livvy Johnston finished off the rebound. From then on Chester’s early confidence seemed to drain away as Penrith turned on the style with a competent 1st half performance with the goals flowing. HT 0-7 In the 2nd half Penrith continued to dominate and in truth eased off as they cruised to a comfortable victory. Goals came from Broad(3), S.Smith(2), Lorenzi, Johnston(2), C.Smith, og FT 0 – 10 Warrington Wolverines 4 – 4 Penrith AFC Ladies Penrith found themselves in a really tough encounter against a strong and experienced Warrington team. In an even, end to end battle both teams struggled to gain the initative. Warrington were proving to be more clinical in the final third of the pitch and were 2-0 up at half time. HT 2-0 Things got worse for Penrith in the 2nd half as they found themselves 3-0 down. Nat Broad pulled a goal back but with 7 mins remaining Penrith still trailed 1-3. However Penrith staged a late show and made it 3-3 with goals from Broad and Mallinson. Even then, in the dying seconds of the game the drama continued as Penrith keeper Michelle Jones was adjudged to have brought down the Warrington striker and Warrington made it 4-3 from the penalty spot. Penrith’s “Never say die” attitude again came to the rescue as youngster Georgia Campbell broke clear and her shot rebounded off the post and Sarah Smith was on hand to fire home the rebound.
Penrith AFCLadies 2-3 Hartlepool Utd Women Ladies enjoyed a challenging friendly last weekend against a very good Hartlepool team. Penrith had to withstand a lot of early pressure as Hartlepool dominated possession with their cultured passed game. Penrith held out for as long as they could but Hartlepool eventually took the lead in the 24th min. Penrith gradually worked their way into the game and were having some success on the counter attack with the pace of Georgia Campbell, Becca Alderson and Nat Broad causing problems. On the 38th min This prove fruitful as Nat Broad scored the equaliser. With half time looming Penrith disappointingly let their concentration slip and Hartlepool scored 2 goals in a 90 second spell. Half time Score 1-3 Penrith switched their personnel at half time making 8 changes to give the whole squad valuable match time. Hartlepool continued to dominated possession without seriously threatening the Penrith goal however Penrith were having great success on the counter attack with Sarah Smith, Chez Brierley and Sophie Nutter all having a number of great scoring opportunities. Eventually Smith pulled a goal back in the 81st minute.

Penrith Panthers U13s competed in the Harraby tournament in Carlisle on Sunday and came away with much praise. They faced tough competition in Workington Reds, Carlisle United, Abbeytown and Northbank and travelled with a bare starting 9 due to holidays and injuries. But they showed true grit and determination as they won 1, drew 2 and lost one to eventual winner’s, Harraby. They played some superb football and scored some high quality goals while also defending as a unit against much physical opposition. All our junior teams are commencing their training sessions after the summer break. If anyone would like any information regarding a specific age group then please contact Karl Collinson pif@hotmail.co.uk

A word from our Main Sponsor Atkinson Building Contractors located in Penrith and recently Keswick, was established 35 years ago by Steve Atkinson and has grown successfully into a ‘one stop’ building solution it is today, specialising in design-build for complete new builds, renovations, extensions, conversions, refurbishments and re-fits including planning application and building regulation approval if required. The workforce of almost 100 local people covers building, joinery, plastering, plumbing, electrical and decorating and their dedicated and specialist project management teams offer a wide range of services from an electrical re-wire to multi million pound design-build projects across all sectors. The company continually maintains accreditations and registrations and frequently receives prestigious building awards which is a testament to their expertise. Pride in the Job awards. The Company, many staff and Steve personally, have maintained strong support and commitment to the club spanning over three decades with strong and longstanding friendships, connections and community spirit being borne a result. Several staff have played for the club over the years and 3 are currently in the first team; the requirement for these lads to leave work early to attend training or play mid-week games has never been questioned, plus having to take time off for football related injuries never challenged. Atkinson Building Contractors continue to be committed to the sponsorship programme with Penrith Football Club, a huge thank you is extended to Steve and Atkinson Building Contractors for getting behind the Bonnie Blues.
