Good afternoon and a warm welcome to our visitors, Whitley Bay and to all those who have made the journey here today. We are back on that trail of dreams again. Our visitors certainly do have a few stories to tell about FA Cup experiences. Their journey to this round started with a 1 – 1 draw away to Seaham Red Star, which took them home to the replay and a 4 – 1 win. After losing their opening match of the season away to now top of the table Morpeth Town, who are the only team remaining in the league with maximum points from their first three matches, Whitley Bay were back on track with a 2 – 0 win at home last weekend against Stockton Town.

We’ve found ourself in a bit of a rut in the three league games since our last cup outing, making a lot of mistakes and giving ourselves a lot to do in each of the three games. I thought we dominated possession of the ball on Wednesday without creating a lot however we conceded two poor goals and at this level of football it’s very difficult to get results when giving people goals. I expect a reaction from the players today as its a chance to make a name for themselves but it will be a difficult game against a side who have only lost once this calendar year. We need to make sure that we show the same battling qualities from the other night but need to improve out quality and the tempo of our play. Please get behind the lads and support them throigh this spell and set us off on a good run of results. Jim Nicol

Whitley Bay FC the History
Welcome to the Visitors
The present Whitley Bay Football Club was formed in 1950 and was known as Whitley Bay Athletic. From 1950 until 1955 Athletic were members of the Northern Alliance, winning the League Championship once and the League Cup twice. In 1952/53 they became the first amateur team for sixty years to win the Northumberland Senior Cup. In 1958 a limited company was formed, the Athletic dropped from the title and the club joined the Northern League. During the 1960’s Whitley Bay became one of the top amateur clubs in the country. They won the Northern League title in 1964/65 and 1965/66, as well as the League Cup in 1964/65. The Club won the Northumberland Senior Cup six times in ten years. But it was in the Amateur Cup that Whitley rose to national prominence, reaching the semi-finals twice and the quarter finals four times. The quarter final against Hendon in 1965 set the ground record, when 7301 supporters packed into Hillheads Park only to see Hendon win 3-1. The early 1970’s saw Bay’s successes continue with the League Cup being won in 1970/71, and the County Cup in 1970/71 and 1972/73. With the demise of amateur football the Club’s fortunes took a nosedive, culminating in them having to apply for re-election to the League in 1979/80. In 1987/88, with fortunes rising, the club joined the Northern Premier League. In 1989/90 the Bay had their best ever run in the FA Cup, when they reached the 3rd Round, going down 1-0 at Rochdale, after a 1-0 win at then League side Scarborough, and in the 2nd Round defeating former winners Preston North End 2-0 in front of the BBC Match of the Day cameras. The following season Whitley won not only the First Division Cup for the second time but also the Championship and promotion to the Premier Division. They finished in 11th spot in the 1993/94 season, their best position in the Premier Division. A decline in fortunes followed during the later 90’s and in 2000 Whitley were relegated back to the Northern League. A new century marked the beginning of the most successful period in the club’s history as they rose to national prominence with record breaking achievements in the FA Vase. The 2001/02 season proved to be one of the most memorable in the clubs’ history when in only their second season in the competition they won the FA Vase at Villa Park, thanks to an Ian Chandler header in extra time against Tiptree United. Things didn’t go to plan the following season and only 12 months after leading the team to Vase glory, Manager Andy Gowens resigned. The appointment of Ian Chandler as Manager in January 2004 proved a masterstroke, with another Vase winner, Steve Cuggy returning as coach. Few could have imagined the success that would follow in the next seven years. In Chandler’s first full season in charge Whitley won the Northumberland Senior Cup and a respectable 5th place in the league was also attained, but much more was to follow in 2006/07 which was a season to savour as Whitley won the league title on the final day of the season with a 3-1 win at Durham City. Goalkeeper Terry Burke was named Northern League Player of the Year and Lee Kerr Young Player of the Year, while Ian Chandler took the Manager of the Year award. As the only club to score more than 100 league goals Whitley’s brand of exciting attacking play was a joy to watch. In 2007/08 the highlight came in the FA Vase when Whitley reached the semi-finals having beaten the holders and favourites Truro City 3-0 in Cornwall. Another long trip in the quarter finals took them to Hungerford Town where they won 1-0. Disaster struck in the first leg of the semi final at Lowestoft with the Trawlermen winning 4-0 win but in a fantastic second leg Whitley were three up after only 24 minutes but could not manage a crucial fourth. Both legs were played in front of over 2000 fans. 2008/09 was a season Bay fans will never forget. The FA Vase once again took centre stage with Manchester side Abbey Hey being Whitley’s first opponents. The visitors went 2-0 up and only a late equaliser from Chris Moore took the game to extra time where Bay ran out 5-2 winners. Victories over Penrith, Bootle, Stratford and Biggleswade Town took Whitley into the semi-final where they were once again paired with Lowestoft. Bay had home advantage in the 1st leg and a crowd of 2,947 saw goals from Paul Chow and Lee Kerr give them a 2-1 lead. . In the 2nd leg 2,250 fans saw Bay’s lead wiped
out inside 3 minutes but an equaliser from Leon Ryan and a superb display from the whole team saw Whitley become the first North East side to reach the new Wembley where their opponents were Glossop North End and what an occasion it was! With 12,212 fans in the stadium, goals from Lee Kerr and Paul Chow (his 40th of the season) brought the FA Vase back to Whitley Bay for the 2nd time in 7 years. Lee Kerr was voted the Man of the Match. 2009/10 was yet another memorable season with Whitley fighting on four fronts for honours. They won the Northumberland Senior Cup at St James Park, defeating Ashington 2-1. They reached the semi final of the League Cup and for a third successive season finished 3rd in the league despite a backlog of fixtures due to the severe winter weather. But once again Wembley beckoned and after an epic two legged semi final against Barwell, Whitley reached the FA Vase Final for the third time and for the second successive season, where their opponents were Wroxham from the Eastern Counties League. The thousands who made the trip from the north east to Wembley were celebrating after only 21 seconds when Paul Chow scored the fastest goal ever seen at Wembley. Wroxham equalised but Whitley’s lead was soon restored.. Lee Kerr’s spectacular effort early in the second half ensured the Vase would be coming back to Whitley Bay for a record equalling third time. Further goals from Adam Johnston, Paul Robinson and Josh Gillies completed the 6-1 victory, the highest score in the history of the FA Vase Final. Paul Chow was also named Man of the Match. 2010/11 again saw Whitley finish 3rd in the league, but only goal difference denied them runners up spot. No team had ever won the FA Vase three years in a row but Whitley were determined to retain the trophy. After last gasp victories at Herne Bay and Dunston, inevitably the semi final was drama packed, as two very late goals gave Whitley a crucial 2-1 lead to bring back from Poole Town. The return leg at Hillheads saw Poole take an early lead but a Chow hat trick sent the Bay back to Wembley where Coalville Town gave them their toughest test yet. An epic Final was decided by Paul Chow’s 86th minute winner as Whitley triumphed 3-2. Chow, who had scored in every round, and Kerr, had twice given Whitley the lead as they both set the remarkable record of scoring in three consecutive Vase Finals. A great display from keeper Terry Burke earned him the man of the match award on his last appearance of an outstanding career. And so Whitley Bay completed a record breaking hat trick of Vase successes and became the first team ever to win the trophy four times. In November 2011 the Club was honoured with the award of the Freedom of the Borough of North Tyneside. After the achievements of recent years, this was a comparatively disappointing season as Whitley finally relinquished their grip on the FA Vase. Their record breaking 29 match unbeaten run in the competition came to an end when a goal deep into stoppage time saw them suffer a 5th Round defeat against West Auckland, who went on to reach the Final. In the league Whitley had to settle for 6th place with Paul Chow scoring 33 goals, while Kyle Hayes was voted the League’s Young Player of the Year. 2012/13 For the fifth time in six years, Whitley finished 3rd in the League. They also reached the Northumberland Senior Cup Final. Paul Chow scored his 200th goal for the club on his way to a season’s total of 46 and midfielder James Fairley was named Northern League Young Player of the Year. It was the end of an era in February 2014 when Ian Chandler resigned after ten hugely successful years as manager. It had been a disappointing season with the club struggling below mid table after several key players had left during the summer. Leon Ryan was appointed temporary manager and a dramatic upturn in form saw him given the job on a permanent basis as Whitley reached the League Cup Final at St James’ Park, only to lose to Marske after extra time. A disappointing season saw Leon Ryan resign after less than a year in charge. His replacement Paddy Atkinson took over in January and began a rebuilding process which saw the departure of Whitley Bay legend Paul Chow, who returned to his home town club Jarrow Roofing after scoring 270 goals in 404 Bay appearances. The season started well with an excellent FA Cup run to the 3rd Qualifying Round. On the way there was a memorable victory on penalties over Matlock Town from the Northern Premier League before National League North side Chorley ended the run with a narrow 3-2 win at Hillheads. Form then dipped badly and with the club hovering around the relegation zone, Paddy Atkinson departed in February and the club turned to former manager Ian Chandler who guided the side to a 16th place finish. Initially a temporary appointment, his position was made permanent at the end of the season. Adam Shanks scored a remarkable 42 goals in his first season at the club and was named Player of the Year. Whitley fell at the first hurdle in both major cup competitions, beaten by lower status opponents and in October, former reserve team boss Marc Nash, who was appointed assistant in the summer, replaced Ian Chandler as manager. He immediately brought in two former Bay stalwarts Anthony Woodhouse and Chris Moore and the new management team guided the club to an unexpected sixth place finish ending the season with a hugely impressive eleven match unbeaten run.

Whitley Bay Football Club Tom Flynn – Goalkeeper - Now in his second spell at Hillheads having signed from Durham in March 2016. Began his career with Newcastle United’s Academy before moving to Hibernian. He also played at Albion Rovers and Cowdenbeath before returning to England where he played for National League Alfreton Town. Callum Harley – Goalkeeper - Callum has signed for the club as cover for Tom. Although a youngster playing at New Hartley Juniors last season Callum has a promising future ahead of him. Jack Byerley - Defender - A local lad Jack played regularly for the reserves before going to Durham University and signing for Durham City while residing there. Now back home he has been moved into the first team set up and his performances have made him a contender for a regular place. Michael Hall - Defender - Michael has recently signed for the club from West Allotment Celtic. He is a very versatile defender who can cover a number of positions. Ross Wilkinson – Defender - A former Football League defender with Leeds United and Mansfield. A centre half who stands at 6’3” and is good in the air. Signed in the summer of 2016 from Durham City, he has also played for Sunderland RCA and Shildon. Callum Anderson – Defender - Callum progressed through the reserves and was a member of the 2009 FA Vase winning squad. He went on to play in both the 2010 and 2011 Vase Finals. An accomplished defender, he is now the longest serving player in the squad with over 300 appearances. Josh Nearney – Defender - Josh signed for the club just before the start of the season when he transferred from National League side Hartlepool United. He had a 2 month loan period last season with the club and Manager swooped to sign him as soon as he became available Graham Williams – Defender - Graham is an outstanding defender who played for the club whilst a member of the reserve team in the 2015/16 season. Last season he played for Heaton Stannington in the Northern League Second Division and also Killingworth Town where he won a Northern Alliance Premier League Championship medal. Glenn Reay - Defender/Midfield - A utility player who signed for the club just before the season started. A former Newcastle United Junior Glen has also played for Washington, Chester-le-Street and South Shields. Aiden Haley – Midfield- Aiden transferred to the club in February 2016 from Durham City. Despite his young age he quickly made an impact with some excellent performances. A former member of the Sunderland Academy he has become a mainstay of the midfield. Alex Kempster – Midfield - A pacy winger, Alex broke through from the reserves as a teenager during 2013/14 and made rapid progress, establishing himself as a key member of the side with some impressive displays as an attacking midfielder. Has made well over 100 appearances and is regularly on the score sheet. Tom Potter – Midfield - A member of the successful reserve side Tom is another making the step up to the first team. He possesses great pace and puts defences under pressure with his direct running. Tom has played college football in the USA. Thibault Charmey – Midfield - An attacking midfielder Thibault signed for the club having previously played for Guisborough Town. As a youngster he was in the PSG Academy and was a World Cup winner at U15 Level scoring against Sweden in the Final. He moved to the USA before coming to England and joining Whitby Town. He was part of Norton & Stockton Ancients promotion winning side before joining Guisborough. Callum Patton - Midfield/Forward - Callum signed for the from Morpeth Town in March 2016. He is a hard working midfield player and a prolific goal scorer and was the clubs top marksman last season. Callum had previously played for Jarrow Roofing and Durham City. Kyle Patton – Forward - Kyle signed for the club from Durham City where he got off the mark when making his debut as a substitute v North Shields. Once he established himself in the side his electrifying pace and his eye for goal have made him a fans favourite Andy Robertson – Forward - Top scorer in the Northern Alliance with the Bay reserves in the 2015/16 season. A strong and powerful striker, he has now made the step up to regular first team football scoring regularly during last season although hampered by a niggling groin injury.
Matty Cornish – Forward - Matty signed during the close season having played for Newcastle Benfield. Another player with great pace and skill he will be a threat to any defence. Liam Brooks – Forward - Liam is a tall 21 year old striker who signed for the club at the beginning of December 2016 from second division Alnwick Town where he made a big impact scoring 16 goals in the first half of the season. He quickly adapted to playing at a higher level and hopes are high he will continue this to find the net regularly this season Peter Glen-Ravenhill - Forward - Peter joined the club in December 2016 from neighbours North Shields having previously played for Team Northumbria. Primarily a striker Peter has been used in a number of positions with great effect. In 2012 Peter was selected to play for the English Schools U18 side and scored during the Centenary game v Scotland Schools U18 at St James’ Park Scott Jasper – Forward - Scott is a recent signing for the club. Previously and dual registered with North Shields Athletic in the Northern Alliance he was their top scorer last season. A big strong aggressive who is good in the air player he will be a threat to defences. Cameron Cunningham – Forward -Another youngster who played for New Hartley Juniors last season. Cameron has had some playing time during the friendlies and looks has shown great potential. Management Team Marc Nash - Manager/Coach A former Bay striker, he also played for Hartlepool, Prudhoe, Tow Law and Ashington. His playing career was ended prematurely by injury but he went on to manage Bay’s reserve side for seven seasons and after a very successful 2015/16 when they were runners up in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, he was promoted to Assistant Manager and Coach of the first team. Following the departure of Ian Chandler Marc took over on a caretaker basis before being given ‘hot seat’ on a full time basis. Marc is Head of Football Coaching at TyneMet College on North Tyneside Anthony Woodhouse- Assistant Manager Anthony has stepped up from the reserves to help Marc. He is a former Whitley Bay player being part of the squad that won the Northern League Championship in 2007. He has also played North Shields and Ashington and has managed North Shields and Newcastle Benfield. Chris Moore - Player/Coach Chris has been brought in by Marc to help with coaching. He is a former Bay player a member of the squad that won the 2009 FA Vase before joining Darlington then members of the Football League, Gateshead and Newcastle United. He is Head of Football Coaching at Durham University and is currently working to hold a EUFA A Licence by the end of the year.

Jarrow front man Oliver Martin opened the scoring on seven minutes after Penrith lost possession. Charlie Bowman levelled after quarter of an hour, diverting Martyn Coleman’s shot into the net and in a scrappy second half Martin’s strike partner David Palmer earned the visitors victory with 20 minutes left as he struck from long range. The highlight of the evening before kick-off, Willy Paul was presented with the Bob Turner Award for achieving over 800 appearances for the club. The presentation was made by Cumberland FA Vice-Chairman John Rogerson.

Saturday, 19th August, 1967 Two newly-signed forwards make their Northern League débuts for Penrith today when their program opens with the visit of Blyth Spartans. Impressive in the pre-season trial games, the Culgaith youngster Brian Williams gets the inside left berth. Williams began his career in local junior football and has had spells with Darlington and Town Law Town. Peter Brockbank, from Gretna, is on the right wing. Brockbank has had Carlisle and District League experience with Gretna and Carlisle. Jock Kinnear has been given the striking role in attack and the absence of leading scorer Albert Clapperton from pre-season matches has raised a question mark in many supporters’ minds. It appears that Clapperton is somewhat undecided about which club he is going to play for this season. His name has been associated with a return to Crook Town. Absent from today’s line-up is fullback Willie Pearson, formerly with Queen of the South, who is on holiday. Lewthwaite moves over to the right flank to accommodate reserve Leslie Bell as left fullback. Incidentally, one of Penrith’s longest serving players and former skipper Terry Mulryan, will play for Alston this year in their first season of the Carlisle and District League. Mulryan has been with Penrith since his schooldays, joining them from Ullswater United. He has filled practically every position on the field, mainly fullback, and has been capped for Cumberland. First of all I’d like to wish Jim and the lads the best of luck tonight in our first home league game verses Jarrow Roofing. We had a great start with the victory in the FA Cup but a tough couple of games since. Let’s hope for 3 points tonight!

It’s been a challenging couple of weeks for me with the surprise announcement on Wednesday last week that our Academy Manager Christian Hunter and his assistant Gary Bailey had decided to step down from their roles due to important personal commitments. I would like to go on record in thanking Christian and Gary for their contribution and wish them well in the future.
The shock resignations came on the eve of a friendly with our reserves at Frenchfield Park. That meant I had to reform last seasons management team in myself and Bob Norman and it was very enjoyable to catch up with the lads and see some of the exciting additions to the squad. They conducted themselves very well and for large parts of the game gave a great account of themselves which I was really pleased with but our Reserves ran out 5-0 winners but this was a little flattering I feel. We have acted quickly to bring in a replacement and I am delighted to announce we have appointed a new Academy manager. His name is Andrew Richardson but is known as “Monkey”.

Colin Watson © He couldn’t wait to start and was really looking forward to meeting the lads at Tuesdays training. I would like to welcome Monkey to the club and I feel delighted to get an experienced manager/coach in position with good football qualifications and credentials. We now look forward and to the forthcoming weekends fixtures. Our Reserves are looking in great shape with Lee Stockdale and Mark Bell putting them through a good pre season culminating in a 4-2 victory against Dalston on Sunday at Frenchfield. They travel to Endmoor KGR on Saturday for their curtain raiser so I wish them the best of luck. The Academy don’t get their campaign started until Wednesday 23rd where they take a trip up the A66 to Kirkby Stephen. Once again I wish Monkey the best of luck and hope for a good start against this newly entered team in the league. Penrith Town start at home to a tough, physical Endmoor KGR Reserves and I know Liam Byrne has prepared well and we wish them a good start too. I myself have a well needed holiday booked and return on Saturday 3rd September when I plan to get my teeth into my new role which hopefully means progressing players through our structure. Penrith AFC Ladies 2-3 Hartlepool Utd Ladies enjoyed a challenging friendly last weekend against a very good Hartlepool team. Penrith had to withstand a lot of early pressure as Hartlepool dominated possession with their cultured passed game. Penrith held out for as long as they could but Hartlepool eventually took the lead in the 24th min. Penrith gradually worked their way into the game and were having some success on the counter attack with the pace of Georgia Campbell, Becca Alderson and Nat Broad causing problems. On the 38th minute this proved fruitful as Nat Broad scored the equaliser. With half time looming Penrith disappointingly let their concentration slip and Hartlepool scored 2 goals in a 90 second spell. Half time Score 1-3 Penrith switched their personnel at half time making 8 changes to give the whole squad valuable match time. Hartlepool continued to dominated possession without seriously threatening the Penrith goal however Penrith were having great success on the counter attack with Sarah Smith, Chez Brierley and Sophie Nutter all having a number of great scoring opportunities. Welcome Break (Gretna) 2 – 2 Penrith AFC Ladies On Tuesday evening at Gretna’s Rydale Stadium Penrith AFC Ladies played their annual charity game against a staff team from Welcome Break services (Gretna branch). This mens squad provided a stern test for Penrith AFC Ladies in what proved to be an evenly balanced and entertaining encounter. Penrith AFC Ladies adopted a sharp, slick passing approach to this game as they tried to combat the extra physical power and pace of the men on the Welcome Break team. Despite Welcome Break having the better of the early stages of the game Penrith defended well with their usual resilience. Penrith worked their way into the game and increasingly began to threaten. Eventually in the 33rd minute Penrith took the lead when a corner was only half cleared and Evie Tonkin fired home the loose ball. Ht 0-1 Into the 2nd half Penrith extended their lead when Tonkin our paced the Gretna Centre Half and fired low past the keeper. The men of Welcome Break picked up their game as they tried to save face against the Ladies of Penrith. Penrith remained determined and disciplined however they could not prevent Welcome Break gaining 2 goals to level the score.

Welcome Break now went for the winner however stern defending, and superb goal keeping from youngster Hope Lawson managed to keep them out and the game ended in a creditable 2-2 draw. Ultimately the score wasn’t important with the real winner being the “Children in Need” Charity who again benefited from this annual event. Thanks to Pudsey Bear for his attendance and for being goal keeper in the half time children’s penalty competition.

Penrith Panthers U13s competed in the Harraby tournament in Carlisle on Sunday and came away with much praise. They faced tough competition in Workington Reds, Carlisle United, Abbeytown and Northbank and travelled with a bare starting 9 due to holidays and injuries. But they showed true grit and determination as they won 1, drew 2 and lost one to eventual winner’s, Harraby. They played some superb football and scored some high quality goals while also defending as a unit against much physical opposition. All our junior teams are commencing their training sessions after the summer break.
