HOLD
BENEFIT WALK
“TEA PARTY”
HELD BY
CONCERNED CITIZENS A coalition of concerned Americans came together April 15 in Eden as part of the national Tax Tea Party movement. Citizens in Rockingham County who are concerned about the increasing size of government at all levels were encouraged to attend our Tax Tea Party at the Eden Boat Landing off Bethlehem Church Road. Those in attendance emptied tea into a wooden crate, as our founders did as a symbolic protest against the rising tide of government spending. Speakers who highlighted the concerns average citizens have about the federal deficit,
state deficit spending and the upcoming county budget process. With municipal elections this fall, and a full slate of local and state elections next year, it is never too early for patriots to come together and say "NO" to big government at all levels. This event was sponsored by the Rockingham County Republican Party, however citizens from across the political spectrum who are concerned about the growth of government were encouraged to attend. More information can be obtained by visiting www.rockgop.com or calling 552-7339 after 7pm.

PRIVATE MENTAL HEALTH PROVIDER April 9, 2009- At the April 13 Commissioners’ meeting, County Manager Tom Robinson and Human Services Director Larry Johnson will recommend transition of the majority of current Mental Health services in Rockingham County to Daymark Recovery Services beginning July 1, 2009. Daymark is a private provider of mental health and substance abuse services utilized by several North Carolina Counties. These services are currently provided by the County’s Mental Health Center in Wentworth, which will close officially on June 30. Mental Health staff were notified of these upcoming changes at a meeting held April 9. This transition is the result of reform and transition of the NC mental health system that began in 2003. As part of this reform, each NC county was required to form or join a Local Management Entity with neighboring counties to administer delivery of services to their residents. County officials decided to maintain the Mental Health Center as a service provider under the oversight of a newly created Alamance Caswell Rockingham LME. At that time, the Board of Commissioners committed funding of $2.5 million to the agency over a three year transition period with an ultimate goal of agency self sustainability. To present, the agency has not been able to cover its annual
costs and has operated at a loss of more than $1 million per year. Funding and continuing issues with the LME resulted in the search for more viable provider alternatives. The county had a limited arrangement with Daymark since December through a special funding grant from the state and Center Point LME. The county has decided to join the Center Point LME effective July 1, and at the same time will begin working with Daymark as the major provider of mental health services. Daymark was selected as a result of their commitment to providing a safety net for those needing services in other nearby counties where they are already providing this function. “We feel that we can provide a very cost effective service,” explained Billy West, Daymark CEO. “We’ll work to develop a very time sensitive transition plan to keep service disruption at a minimum.” Both Robinson and Johnson stressed that every effort will be made to find suitable employment for Mental Health Center staff, either at Daymark or other county agencies when appropriate. “We are committed to developing a fair and equitable transition plan for the employees affected by this action,” noted Johnson. “All efforts are being made to look at each affected employee,” he continued, “and to individually evaluate any employment options that may be available.”

A CLEANER WORLD ASSISTS UNEMPLOYED IN COUNTY A Cleaner World is offering free dry cleaning to anyone who is currently unemployed and needs freshly cleaned and pressed clothes for a job interview. For men, A Cleaner World will clean a suit or blazer and slacks, plus two dress shirts per week and for women, a suit and two shirts or blouses or two regular dresses per week. All a customer needs to provide to receive the free cleaning is a current statement from the Employment S e c u r i t y Commission. The free cleaning offer is effective immediately and will continue through August 31, 2009. With North Carolina’s unemployment rate approaching 10% in January, A Cleaner World, a local family-owned business, decided this was a great way to assist unemployed workers in the area. “This is just our way of trying to help out our neighbors.” said Chris Edwards, President of A Cleaner World. Edwards added, “It’s our hope that this might relieve some of the stress on job seekers and their
families and give them a better opportunity at finding another job.” “First impressions are so important, especially in today’s tight job market,” said Larry Diana, owner of Express Employment Professionals in Greensboro, NC “Most applicants may not think to get their suit cleaned before a job interview, but there is something about putting on a crisp shirt and freshly cleaned suit that gives an applicant added confidence. That confidence could be the extra factor that helps him or her land their next job. A Cleaner World is providing a terrific service to the members of our community.” A Cleaner World was founded in High Point in 1969. Today the company operates 41 locations throughout North Carolina and Virginia . High Point is the home of A Cleaner World’s corporate headquarters, and they employ approximately 425 people. The Eden store is located at 640 S Van Buren Road, Eden, NC. For additional information, please contact Judy White at 336.623.3975.

IS
YOUR CHILD READY Do you have a child who will be four years old by August 31, 2009? Did you know your child may qualify for the More at Four Pre-Kindergarten Program? More at Four is a state-funded, community-based pre-kindergarten program that is free of charge to qualifying families. More at Four is designed to provide 4-year-old children, who may not otherwise be served, with a valuable educational experience. This program provides young children with access to a high quality preschool experience to enhance school readiness. The More at Four PreKindergarten Program standards are built on the premise that in order to be successful academically in school, children need to be prepared in all five of the major domains of development outlined by the National Education Goals Panel in 1995. These five dimensions of school readiness are: Physical Health and Development: Is your child healthy, well nourished and active? Are his vision and hearing OK? Can he control his body to do things such as run or hold a pencil? Approaches to Learning: Is she curious and eager to learn? Is she persistent when exploring new things? Communication: Is your child able to understand others and make his thoughts understood by others? Is your child interested in books and stories? Social and Emotional Development: Does your child feel good about herself, viewing
FOR MORE AT FOUR? herself as being successful? Does she get along well with other children and adults? General Knowledge and Thinking: Does he understand what letters and numbers are? Does he ask questions about things. Each of these domains is critical to children's well being, in particular for their success in reading and math as they come to school. The Rockingham County Partnership for Children (RCPC) is now accepting applications for the 2009-2010 school year for the More at FourPre-Kindergarten Program. Children must turn 4-yearsold by August 31, 2009 to be eligible for enrollment this year. The Rockingham County Partnership for Children (RCPC) is now accepting applications for the More at FourPreKindergarten program, 20092010 school year. To learn more about More at Four Pre-Kindergarten program or to receive an application, call Lori or Adina at 336-342-9676. Children must turn five years old by August 31st to enroll in kindergarten? Registration for kindergarten begins April 1. If you need help finding information about your local elementary school or planning after school care, call Lori at 336-342-9676. For additional information on child-related issues or kindergarten readiness, contact the Rockingham County Partnership for Children at www.rockinghamkids.org or 342-9676.

AND COMING YOUTHS The City of Eden invites the community to come and spend Sunday afternoon in the park. The next concert in the park will be held April 26th from 3:005:00pm. In May we will resume having concerts the last Saturday of the month from 6:30-8:30pm. In May we will have the Black Katz Blues & Boogie Band and Dusty Ridge Band. The Kiwanis Amphitheatre is happy to host “The Church Sisters”on Sunday, April 26th from3:00 – 5:00pm. The Church Sisters are thirteen year old twin girls from Ringgold, Virginia. Don’t let their age fool you they have an extensive musical career under their belts. They were featured in Americana Rhythm Magazine and have traveled all over Virginia singing for large
and small congregations. They won the WAKG Rising Stars talent competition and their phone has not stopped ringing. They opened the
show for national country recording artist Ty Herndon, and have met and opened a gospel concert for Russ Taff from the Bill Gaither Gospel Group. They were also honored to have the opportunity to open a show for the most adored Christian Bluegrass group in America today, The Isaacs. The Church
Sisters played locally at “The Barn” and had a standing room only crowd. With Savannah’s strong lead vocals and Sarah’s angelic harmony, their voices combine to make a truly wonderful gift of God come to life. They sing only for God, putting him first above all things. The Church Sisters’ ministry is allowing them and their family to prosper in ways they never could have imagined. Sarah and Savannah’s first recording titled “Farther Along “is now available. You can find out more about the sisters at www.thechurchsisters.com. Come out, bring your lawn chairs and enjoy the music in the park.

❦ PAGE 12 EDEN’S OWN... JOURNAL, APRIL 17, 2009 THINK GLOBALLY, BUY LOCALLY In these challenging times, we are all looking for a “bargain”. Amazingly, most these of can be found in our own community. Before you hit that ‘finalize my purchase’ button, think about the many wares and services that are available right here in Eden and Rockingham County. Do these online vendors support your community in any way? Do they take jobs and revenue away? Give our area merchants an opportunity. After all they are the ones that pay
taxes, provide employment, support our schools, charities, churches, and who make their purchases in the local food establishments, gas stations. They volunteer within in the County, giving of their time, talent and resources to make this the true Garden of Eden. The internet is a wonderful resource tool, but it was never meant to take the place of true customer service. There is a great value in making eye contact with the provider of your goods and services, as well as supporting those who support us.

NEW SCENIC BYWAYS PROPOSED FOR ROCKINGHAM COUNTY Three scenic byway extensions are being proposed to attract visitors to areas of the southern Rockingham County. The Revolutionary High Rock Road, Race to the Dan and General Greene’s Retreat Road are all proposed scenic byway extensions that take visitors to culturally significant sites from the Revolutionary War. Combined, the routes total 29 miles, taking visitors through rural parts of the southern Rockingham County. Along the Revolutionary High Rock Road visitors can see the house of one of John McCain’s ancestors. Along General Greene’s Retreat Road, visitors can see the site of what was once an Iron Works and had been a temporary hospital for the Revolutionary War forces retreating from the battle of Guilford Courthouse. Along the Race to the Dan route, visitors can retrace the steps several of General Greene’s troops took in trying to draw the British Army north. The Piedmont Triad Rural Planning Organization has worked with the Rockingham County Tourism Authority, Chambers of Commerce and other local advocates to gather photos and historic and cultural information for the application to the Scenic Byway Program. “Expanding scenic byways in the region is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the scenic assets of our rural areas to the residents and visitors alike,” explains Hanna Cockburn, Planning Program Manager for the Piedmont Triad Rural

Planning Organization. The final application for the designation will be submitted later this month for consideration by the NCDOT Board of Transportation in May. The Scenic Byway Program is administered by the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Environmental Roadside Unit. The North Carolina Department of Transportation had designated 51 Scenic Byways across the state to give visitors and residents a chance to experience a bit of North Carolina history, geography and culture while raising awareness for the protection and preservation of these treasures. Routes are carefully selected to embody the diverse beauty and culture of the Tar Heel State and provide travelers with the safe and interesting route. Since 2002, the Piedmont Triad Rural Planning Organization has been working cooperatively with the North Carolina Department of Transportation and local officials in the five rural counties it serves to enhance access to transportation planning and services for local officials and the public.

‘SPRING CLEAN-UP’
TIME
IS HERE By Paul Amos, Solid Waste Superintendent
Winter has lost its punch and spring certainly is in the air. As always, the season of spring jumpstarts many residents in tackling the enormous amount of chores left from winter. Included in the task at hand is removing unsightly rubbish and junk items that somehow manage to end up on the property. The City of Eden Solid Waste Division is gearing up for the annual Spring Clean-Up Week scheduled for April 20-24. Eden residents are encouraged to place various items that are in need of disposal at the curb for collection by city forces the week of Spring Clean-Up. Residents should have all items to be collected at the curb by 7 a.m. on their scheduled day of service. Junk items, metal, old appliances and discarded household furniture will be collected as well as scrap lumber and demolition waste, all at no extra charge. The city will not collect toxic or hazardous waste such as containers of oil, paint, gasoline, batteries or pesticides. Residents should be sure that items are placed at the curb properly for collection and not obstructed by stationary objects, vehicles, overhead utility lines or low-hanging tree limbs. General junk items should be placed at the curb and piled separate from metal items. Scrap lumber and demolition waste should be placed in a separate pile from tree limbs and clean wood material. Leaves, grass clippings and twigs not exceeding six inches in length should be placed at the curb and piled loosely for collection during the week of April 20 on your normal scheduled day for service. The city will also provide loose-leaf collection during the Spring Clean-Up Week; however, the city no longer provides service for bagged leaves and grass clippings. While winter was putting a freeze on many of the outdoor activities of area residents, the City of Eden’s Solid Waste

Division had a couple of “hot projects” steaming: mulch and compost material was prepared for the annual mulch giveaway and compost sale, which started March 21. What once was placed at the curb as waste for disposal by Eden residents, such as leaves, grass clippings and wood waste deriving from tree trimming and removal, is now recycled for use as a viable product. This year, Eden is providing free mulch as long as it lasts, with compost available at rates depending on the load size: $5 (pick-up); $20 (dump truck); and $35 (tandem dump truck). The mulch is ideal for the development of natural areas and for placement around trees and shrubbery. Compost is an excellent soil amendment for flower and vegetable gardens and for areas of lawn where soil needs added nutrients for improvement. Compost also helps to retain moisture in soil during dry periods. Area residents can pick up mulch and compost Saturdays from 7 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. at the Public Works Facility at the end of West Avenue off of Washington Street. In case of rain, the sale will be moved to the following Saturday. Residents can usually have their trucks and utility trailers loaded quickly upon arriving at facility. There is a limited amount of mulch available and it is expected to last only for a short period of time. The Eden Solid Waste Division encourages each citizen to “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle” - these three practices are essential for each of us to be good stewards of the earth, the environment and the natural resources we have been endowed with. Each of us owes it to ourselves and to future generations. If you need more information about Spring Clean-up Week or the mulch and compost event, call the Solid Waste Division at 627-7783, weekdays from 7 a.m. – 3 p.m.

A NATIONAL HERO PASSES Imagine: You're a 19 year old kid. You're critically wounded, and dying in the jungle in the Ia Drang Valley , 11-14-1965, LZ X-ray, Vietnam . Your infantry unit is outnumbered 8 - 1, and the enemy fire is so intense, from 100 or 200 yards away, that your own Infantry Commander has ordered the MediVac helicopters to stop coming in. You're lying there, listening to the enemy machine guns, and you know you're not getting out. Your family is 1/2 way around the world, 12,000 miles away, and you'll never see them again. As the world starts to fade in and out, you know this is the day. Then, over the machine gun noise, you faintly hear that sound of a helicopter, and you look up to see an un-armed Huey, but it doesn't seem real, because no Medi-Vac markings are on it. Ed Freeman is coming for you. He's not Medi-Vac, so it's not his job, but he's flying his Huey down into the machine gun fire, after the Medi-Vacs were ordered not to come. He's coming anyway. And he drops it in, and sits there in the machine gun fire, as they load 2 or 3 of you on board. Then he flies you up and out through the gunfire, to the Doctors and Nurses. And, he kept coming back.... 13 more times..... And took about 30 of you and your buddies out, who would never have gotten out. Medal of Honor Recipient, Ed Freeman, died last a couple weeks ago at the age of 80, in Boise, ID...May God rest his soul... I bet you didn't hear about this hero's passing, but we sure were told a whole bunch about some Hip-Hop Coward beating the crap out of his "girlfriend" Again, Medal of Honor Winner Ed Freeman, may he rest in peace.
JEANS EVENT
of Rockingham County and Southern Virginia coming together to raise funds for the mission of the Rockingham Pregnancy Care Center. The list of silent auction items is almost endless including: artwork, pottery, home and garden, guy stuff, jewelry, and ladies fashions, and much more. The live auction includes A C C Basketballs, beautiful furniture, weekend getaways(beach and mountain), Karastan rugs, and tickets to the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra in New York City, just to name a few. FOOD – This event is the ultimate in “food fantasy” and it is FREE. You will find your palate delighted with authentic Mexican, Italy Grill, Taste of Japan, Church Street Station pinto beans, Garden Spot Salad Smorgasbord, Best Bar-B-Que, Baked Potato Bar, Baby Bite Sandwiches, Sub Sandwiches, Pizza and more. For your sweet tooth there are Homemade Baked Pies (best sweet potato pie you ever put in your mouth!) and a great 50’s Ice Cream Shop with sundaes and all the trimmings FERVOR - The enthusiasm and dedication that fuels this event is perhaps the most important element of all. The funds raised from this event serve as the lion’s share of our budget. Your contributions are totally reinvested in our community in the lives of young mothers and their children. Your loyalty to this event has enabled the Rockingham Pregnancy Care Center to continue to make a difference. You will want to arrive early and stay late. A message from a client’s heart: I never thought I would need the Rockingham Pregnancy Care Center but I was young, pregnant and scared. Honestly, I did not want to go at first, my mom took me and asked me to just talk to someone. Gail and staff directed me and comforted me at a time when I was vulnerable and frightened. I knew that I could go there whenever I needed to. If I needed to talk, cry, ask for advice, whatever, I could go anytime and know that someone who cared would be there for me. There were several times I had no money for diapers, formula, wipes, even toilet paper and the pregnancy care center provided what I could not at that time. I have been through a lot and I am so thankful God led me there. If you are pregnant and find yourself alone, scared, confused, whatever, please know that you can go there and talk to someone and everything is confidential and they really care. I can assure you from what I have seen over the past years that the staff is not there because they need a job, they are there because they have a passion for YOU, they want to be there for you and help you. You will find God’s love and

compassion there. I urge you-don’t try to make decisions before you go talk to someone there. You will be so glad you did! Thank you Rockingham Pregnancy Care Center! Our volunteers come with a willing sprit and make the time meaningful for all of us. Thanks Paula and Teresa for all you do to make RPCC more effective! Volunteers at the Rockingham Pregnancy Care Center are people like you. Our volunteers are simply available. They live busy lives; they may have children and wonder how they will fit everything in. Yet, they realize that giving back is so much a part of living a meaningful life. Volunteers sometimes have fears like all of us. They are concerned that they might not always say the right thing, and perhaps learning something new is challenging but they are willing. They all have concerns but they don’t let that hinder them from doing something! In spite of these concerns they come because they want to make a difference. They set a good example. They are a shining illustration of the good that is in our world. Volunteers are meeting needs that our county and community have in ways that can’t be measured just in monetary measure. Volunteering demonstrates that all time is of value. Charities and nonprofit organizations see the need for volunteers becoming even stronger in our present economic climate. Being a volunteer brings about change, both to the organization and the volunteer. Volunteering says something about your character; it shows you are willing to invest in the lives of others. It’s a surefire investment! ROCKINGHAM PREGNANCY CARE CENTER 424 West Kings Highway Eden, North Carolina 27288

THE BLONDE
AND THE
LORD
A blonde wanted to go ice fishing. She'd seen many books on the subject, and finally getting all the necessary tools together, she made for the ice. After positioning her comfy footstool, she started to make a circular cut in the ice. Suddenly, from the sky, a voice boomed, "THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE." Startled, the blonde moved further down the ice, poured a thermos of cappuccino, and began to cut yet another hole. Again from the heavens the voice bellowed, "THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE." The blonde, now worried, moved away, clear down to the opposite end of the ice. She set up her stool once more and tried again to cut her hole. The voice came once more, "THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE." She stopped, looked skyward, and said, "IS THAT YOU, LORD?" The voice replied, "NO, THIS IS THE MANAGER OF THE HOCKEY RINK" . Due to the climate of political correctness now pervading America , Kentuckians, Tennesseans and West Virginians will no longer be referred to as 'HILLBILLIES. ' You must now refer to them as APPALACHIAN- AMERICANS.
Because they had no reservations at a busy restaurant, my elderly neighbor and his wife were told there would be a 45minute wait for a table. "Young man, we're both 90 years old," the husband said. "We may not have 45 minutes." They were seated immediately.

WHERE’S JESUS? A Sunday School teacher of pre-schoolers was concerned that his students might be a little confused about Jesus Christ because of the Christmas season emphasis on His birth. He wanted to make sure they understood that the birth of Jesus occurred a long time ago, that He grew up, etc. So he asked his class, "Where is Jesus today?" Steven raised his hand and said, "He's in heaven." Mary was called on and answered, "He's in my heart." Little Davie waving his hand furiously, blurted out, "I know! I know! He's in our bathroom!" The teacher was completely at a loss for a few very long seconds. Finally, he gathered his wits and asked Little Davie how he knew this. Little Davie said, "Well... every morning, my father gets up, bangs on the bathroom door, and yells, "Jesus Christ, are you still in there?!"
FATHER
OF THE
BRIDE
All eyes were on the radiant bride as her father escorted her down the aisle. They reached the altar and the waiting groom; the bride kissed her father and placed something in his hand. The guests in the front pews responded with ripples of laughter. Even the priest smiled broadly. As her father gave her away in marriage, the bride gave him back his credit card.
The reason congressmen try so hard to get re-elected is that they would hate to have to make a living under the laws they've passed.

This is a great start for the group, but still needed are a printer/scanner or the office, and another computer, printer and negative scanner for the Francis Photography Room to digitally archive the vast collection. In the recent past there have been several donations to the museum including - An 1940’s dress from the Bullard-Ray family from Jean Harrington. - Daisy King Barker’s wedding shoes. The day of her wedding the first electricity was turned on in Leaksville at her fathers home (Idlewild), while the wedding was taking place there. Donated by Peyton Cherry.
APRIL SPECIAL TO THOSE SCOT & SCOTS-IRISH April 6 had a special significance for all Americans and especially those Americans of Scottish descent, as it was on April 6, 1320 that the Declaration of Arbroath, the Scottish declaration of Independence was signed. The General Assembly of North Carolina recently made the following resolution (House Joint Resolution 2067), which recognized the contributions of the Scots and Scots-Irish to our community: Almost half the signers of the United States Declaration of Independence were of Scottish descent as were the governors of nine of the original 13 colonies. More than 27 million Americans can trace their roots back to Scotland and the Scottish plantations of Northern Ireland. The State of North Carolina was the primary destination of Scots and Scots-Irish immigrants, some of whom became leaders of the State such as Colonial Governors Thomas Pollock and Gabriel Johnston and Governor Samuel Johnston.
North Carolina continues to lead the county in residents with Scottish and Scots-Irish heritage and is home to various festivals and games featuring Scottish culture that are held annually across the State, including the Flora MacDonald Highland Games, Loch Norman Highland Games, Grandfather Mountain Highland Games, Waxhaws Scottish Highland Gams and the Taste of Scotland held in Macon County. North Carolinians seeking information regarding their Scottish heritage and history can visit numerous museums and institutions throughout the State, including the Scottish Tartans Museum in Franklin. There are many North Carolina localities named for the area’s Scottish settlers or in honor of Scotland including Scotland Neck and Scotland County. The Carolina Tartan was adopted as the official tartan of the State of North Carolina in 1991, and many organizations and legislative bodies have rec-

FOR
LIFE -
Joan Weisenbeck
Relay for Life helps to save lives! This overnight event, coming to Eden's Freedom Park on May 15th, helps fund local cancer programs as well as research into all types of cancer. Relay for Life is 25 years old this year, and is an important source of funding for the American Cancer Society whose mission is to fight cancer through research, education, advocacy and service. Since 1984, many important discoveries have been made through American Cancer Society ( ACS ) supported research. In the area of breast cancer, we now know that lumpectomy plus radiation has similar survival rates to mastectomy alone. We now use Taxol an Taxotere to treat breast cancer. In 1988 we found that Her2/neu tumors ( 15 -30% of breast cancers ) had a bad prognosis. By 2005 studies on Herceptin, a drug used to treat this type of breast cancer, were stopped early because success rates were so high. ACS dollars also supported the discovery of the Pap Test which saves millions of lives each year by providing early detection for cervical cancer. These dollars also supported the investigator who found that bone marrow transplantation could save lives. Investigators funded by the ACS developed Gleevec, hailed by many as a wonder drug. This is now an important treatment for leukemia. The Cancer Prevention Study found that lifestyle choices contributed to cancer, and that changes could decrease incidence.Tests and/or therapies for many types of cancer have been found through ACS research. These include, but are not limited to cancers of the brain, breast, cervix, colon, gastrointestinal system, head and neck, lung, mouth, ovary, pancreas, prostate, rectum, throat and thyroid. Progress has been made in treating leukemias, lymphomas, mesothelioma and multiple myeloma as well. Overall, 5 year survival rates are increasing and cancer death rates from all causes

RESEARCH SAVES LIVES
are decreasing. The American Cancer Society makes it a priority to support first time investigators with innovative ideas.Progress in cancer treatment has been the result. ACS investigations have led to 42 Nobel Prizes so far. The latest has gone to two of UNC-Chapel Hill's own, Capecchi and Smithies, for gene targeting. Because of research like this, a cancer patient today has a totally different experience than a patient even a decade ago and the patient of tomorrow will benefit from today's investigations.
