WWII Veteran Receives U.S. Flag Presentation, by U.S. Congressman Walker On December 7th, World War II veteran Harry Samuel Lawson of Eden, was presented a U.S. Flag from U.S. Congressman Mark Walker (NC 6th Congressional District). Eden Mayor Wayne Tuggle Sr. and Congressman Walker’s Assistant Kyle Hall attended. The Morehead High School JROTC Color Guard presented the colors (including Lawson’s granddaughter, Anna Swartzlander). Lawson married Betty Carter in 1950. They have four children (one is Rockingham County Payroll Specialist Debbie Swartzlander), eight grandchildren, and 11 greatgrandchildren. Harry enlisted at the age of 18 on June 23, 1943, in Roanoke, VA. He was
with Battery D. 5th AntiAircraft Training Battalion out of Fort Eustis, VA, as his assignment Oct. of 1943, following basic training. He was aboard ship to Hawaii and was stationed there. In 1944, he was placed with the 102nd Infantry. A member of Leaksville Christian Church in Eden; he worked for many years in the automobile industry, the last of which was Tri-City Ford in Eden. He then had a long career with Duke Power, where he retired.
