WWII Veteran Receives U.S. Flag Presentation,

by U.S. Congressman Walker On December 7th, World War II veteran Harry Samuel Lawson of Eden, was presented a U.S. Flag from U.S. Congressman Mark Walker (NC 6th Congressional District).

Eden Mayor Wayne Tuggle Sr. and Congressman Walker’s Assistant Kyle Hall attended. The Morehead High School JROTC Color Guard presented the colors (including Lawson’s granddaughter, Anna Swartzlander).

Lawson married Betty Carter in 1950. They have four children (one is Rockingham County Payroll Specialist Debbie Swartzlander), eight grandchildren, and 11 greatgrandchildren.

Harry enlisted at the age of 18 on June 23, 1943, in Roanoke, VA. He was

with Battery D. 5th AntiAircraft Training Battalion out of Fort Eustis, VA, as his assignment Oct. of 1943, following basic training. He was aboard ship to Hawaii and was stationed there. In 1944, he was placed with the 102nd Infantry.

A member of Leaksville Christian Church in Eden; he worked for many years in the automobile industry, the last of which was Tri-City Ford in Eden. He then had a long career with Duke Power, where he retired.

Local Bus System Continues to Thrive Aging, Disability and Transit Services (ADTS), has provided transportation across Rockingham County since 1983.

In addition to providing general public transportation, ADTS provides oversight and administration of all non-emergency medical transportation for Medicaid beneficiaries. In fall of 2010, ADTS decided to pursue funding administered through the North Carolina Department of Transportation. This federal grant opened funding to transportation programs targeting any one of three identified priority

groups including the elderly and/or individuals with disabilities. Given the high utilization of the demand-response van system and anticipated growth in these targeted areas, the addition of a fixed route bus system seemed to be a logical step in service expansion. ADTS was approved for funding to operate one route in the City of Eden and in January of 2013, they launched the first bus route to serve Rockingham County in more than 50 years. With the introduction of this service, ADTS, in collaboration with local govern-

Powers ment, took a major step toward implementation of a county-wide rural transit system.

In August 2014, the second route launched in Reidsville with equal success and positive community reception and in May of 2015, the third and final leg of the bus network commenced in western Rockingham County, linking the towns of Mayodan, Madison and Stoneville. In addition to the three bus routes, the network also includes a connector system that offers riders the ability to move across the county as well as access the numerous services and programs housed in our county seat. With a fee of only one dollar, every time you board a vehicle, the buses and connectors together offer a more convenient and affordable way to access the entire community for work, for school, for shopping, for leisure or whatever the needs may be!

Although the service targets elderly residents or individuals with disabilities, utilization is not restricted exclusively to those groups. As a public system, accessible to all residents, the program offers far reaching implications for the entire com-

munity on issues such as education, health care access and job employment. Throughout implementation, city officials, aware of resident needs as well as other city initiatives, have worked with ADTS to manage requests for modifying the route to coincide with municipality initiatives. Communication and adaptability are crucial components of the program’s success and allow ADTS to amend the route as necessary to address changes in consumer needs or reflect utilization statistics.

Rockingham County is a model for rural public transit in North Carolina. In just under a three-year time period our community has seen truly remarkable growth in our public transit system. We continue to hear how the system is changing lives for the better – it’s helping residents secure job training and employment, providing transport to and from classes at Rockingham Community College, helping people access public and nonprofit programs or secure groceries and medications. In general, people are telling us it’s enhancing and expanding their ability to move freely throughout our county, and that’s the goal! It has taken many dedicated people, coming together, to bring the bus system to our community. Thousands of riders have used the system to date; in fact, this last fiscal year alone, the system provided more than 28,000 trips!

ADTS appreciates the continued support from our elected officials and town managers across Rockingham County. Our collaborative partnerships with the county and local municipalities have been instrumental in the continued success of the transit systems. We are also thankful to the community – businesses, organizations, and individuals – for embracing the system and offering valuable feedback that helps us continually improve your experience.

Correction In November’s issue of Eden’s Own Journal it was mistakenly printed that the Eagle Scout project of Cody was to paint a mural on the outside of the main building of the Humane Society Animal Shelter. He did not paint the mural, but the attached building sage green.

He completed his project with the help of a paint donation from Lowes Home Improvement and monetary donation from Wal-Mart. We apologize for the mistake. The painter of the beautiful mural on the smaller side of the building was done anonymously for charity.

Nassar, former educator, passes Odell J. Nassar, a former teacher at TriCity High / Morehead High School, passed away on December 1, at the age of 89.

A US Navy World War II veteran, he was born in Salisbury but resided in Eden until 1995. In his early years he attended Catawba College and received a Masters from UNC Chapel Hill.

Nassar Nassar was very involved in his community here as well as where he was residing in New Jersey.

He also served as a volunteer at St. Martin’s Soup Kitchen, Jersey City, NJ and was a member of the NJEA. Through his love of golf, Odell was a mentor to numerous students over his teaching career and beyond. In 2015, Odell was recognized and honored by the NJ Athletic Association with a Lifetime Achievement for his service in high school golf.

Odell is survived by his beloved wife, Angela Patricia Nassar of 56 years, and his three loving children Tom Nassar, Mary Nassar and Michael Nassar and wife Anne.

Eden Wastewater Superintendent wins prestigious William D. Hatfield award Melinda Ward, City of Eden Wastewater Superintendent, has won the 2016 William D. Hatfield Award which is presented to operators of wastewater treatment plants for outstanding performance and professionalism by the North Carolina Water Environment Association(NCWEA). The purpose of the award is to recognize operators of wastewater and waste treatment plants who are doing an outstanding job in performance of their duties as well as operators demonstrating distinguished professionalism. The award is made only after careful

deliberation and when it is the opinion of a selection committee of NCWEA members that an outstanding member of their Association has qualified for the award.

“With the receipt of the Hatfield Award, Melinda has proven to be one of the top experts in the field of wastewater treatment in North Carolina,” stated Terry Shelton, Director of Public Utilities for the City of Eden. “This award is voted on by her industry peers and it is truly an honor to have her fellow professionals acknowledge her accomplish-

The aspects of plant operation upon which the award is based are the encouragement of better public relations between plant operators and the public, recognition of the outstanding reports which serve the requirements of the operator’s superior officials and recommendations by the operator for improvements to his or her plant for better efficiency of treatment and economy of operation. The award also recognizes outstanding reports which serve the requirements of the funds and care of treatment plant and accessories entrusted to the operator and the advancement of the art and knowledge of wastewater treatment by dissemination to other engineers and operators, the basic information and date concerning a particular plant and process through papers, articles, meetings and reports.

Melinda Ward graduated from Western Carolina University in 1993, with a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health, following in the same career path as her father, Lynwood Sessoms, who worked for the Town of Tarboro in wastewater operations for almost 43 years.

She began her career as a laboratory technician at the City of Rocky Mount, NC Wastewater Treatment Plant before being employed by the Town of Newton Grove, NC and then Martinsville, VA. In 2008, Ward became the Wastewater Treatment Plant Superintendent (WWTP) for the City of Eden.

Ward has served in this position

for eight years and has done an excellent job managing the plant, as shown with six consecutive years of permit compliance with no violations.

Ward strives to have her plant operate as effectively and efficiently as possible, and continually searches for improving the plant’s treatment processes at every opportunity. She also strives for growth and improvement in herself.

Ward’s leadership strength is no accident. She received the Local Government Federal Credit Union Fellows Scholarship and completed the Fellows Program through the UNC Institute of Government.

She is also a graduate of the UNC Institute of Government Municipal Administrative course. Ward has used her education and training to be very effective in a multitude of applications giving of her time to work on projects with other city departments, the NC Pretreatment Consortium, the Dan River Basin Association, and elsewhere as needed. She also strives to grow her working relationships with peers from around the state and has an earnest desire to help others.

Ward is very active in the North Carolina Section of the American Water Works Association (NC AWWA) and the North Carolina Member Association of the Waste Environment Federation (NCWEA) and is currently serving as Vice Chair on the Wastewater Board of Education and Examiners. She is also Chair of the NC Professional Wastewater Operators Committee Central Region.

Ward is involved with safety training and OSHA compliance and has been a leader with the City of Eden Safety Committee.

Recently, Ward completed the review and revision of the City of Eden Safety and Loss Control Policy. Her WWTP has twice received the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) certification from OSHA.

With the 50th Anniversary of Biscuitville, the Eden store received a makeover and held the official ribbon cutting and Grand Opening on December 13th. In honor of the event Biscuitville CEO Burney Jennings attended and held the ribbon during the event.

Book “TUFF ENUFF” Well Received Janice U. Wangard

Our Book, “TUFF ENUFF”

by Sunshine Hudson and Janice Wangard, was introduced in the September edition of Eden’s Own Journal. First made available to readers on October 9 at a local book signing event, the book has exceeded expectations.

Readers from early teens through those of the “Greatest Generation” have reported loving the book and were sorry when it ended.

Enjoyment has not been limited to members of the family or those close to one or more family members. There seems to be enough local history, time period details, personal interest stories, family life in the early to mid-1900’s, downhome humor, and genealogy in this story of Cicero and Mollie Underwood’s family to entertain a broad spectrum of readers. Books have been sent to at least six other states by request.

When Sunshine (88 yearold co-author) was asked by several readers, who would play her in the movie, she quickly told them, “Why, I will of course”, then laughs along with the readers. Perhaps the most rewarding comments have been from those thinking they should record their own family stories before it is too late.

With this receptivity and continuing interest, books have been made available for sale at Wright Printing in Eden and Sanitary Café in Reidsville.

Other than the planned book events, the largest continuing distribution originated from calls or emails to the authors with a simple question “How can I get one of your books”?

Rockingham Community College has added one to their library and the Rockingham County Library System has expressed interest in placing one in each of the county locations.

With Christmas behind us, what could be better on a cold winter’s day than curling up by the fire with a good book?

Both authors would welcome feedback from readers willing to share their thoughts or suggestions. With the ink barely dry on the first effort, requests have been made for Volume 2.

Should we become brave enough to tackle a follow-up, we would hope to benefit from lessons learned with book one.

14 Community Leaders Graduate from Rockingham County's Sixth CITIZENS’ ACADEMY Some brand new community leaders graduated from Rockingham County Government's sixth Citizens' Academy Class. A total of 14 students received framed certificates and big handshakes of approval from Rockingham County Commissioners at their Nov. 21st meeting in Wentworth.

Graduates included: Elisabeth Cedillo of Reidsville; Debbie Ellis of Eden; Gerri Hunt of Eden; Joseph Irving of Ruffin; Roberta Lindsey of Reidsville; Walter Moore of Ruffin; Amber Nawa of Eden; Tammy Nichols of Wentworth; Geraldine Partee of Reidsville; Cathy Scales of Reidsville; Kirk Smith of Reidsville; Tonya Totten of Ruffin; Tyra Totten of Ruffin; Sandy Williams of Eden.

This free, comprehensive, ten-week program helped the graduates better understand how Rockingham County Government operates. To inform, educate, engage, and empower local citizens with a thorough, behind-the-scenes view of Rockingham County Government in order to help grow and develop future County Governmental leaders; 2. To personally meet and talk with County elected officials, department heads, appointed Board/Committee leaders, and staff to better understand how County Government operates.

Eventually, this will enable Academy graduates to be actively involved with County Government; 3. To gain a working knowl-

edge about the County’s overall organization, vision, mission, goals, objectives, budget, policies, procedures, and day-to-day functions to create civic ambassadors who may enlighten others about County Government.

The Citizens’ Academy consists of ten programs/tours focusing on major County Governmental topics. A short video introduces sessions followed by County department heads and experts. The class does a problem solving exercise, hypothetical example, or case study. The main dialogue involves participants’ solutions and exchanges with department heads and experts.

The Low Income Energy Assistance Program (known as LIEAP) will begin taking applications on December 1, 2016 for households responsible for their independent heating expenses.

Applicants who may apply beginning December 1, 2016 include: Households with a person who is 60 years or older, only.

All other households will be eligible to apply for the LIEAP starting January 1, 2017, through March 31, 2017, depending on the availability of funding.

Any household interested in receiving assistance from the LIEAP will need to complete an application; there is no longer an automatic eligibility process through the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (also known as Food Stamps).

All households’ will need to meet the financial means test.

Households’ who are approved for LIEAP funds will need to have an approved vendor, including an account number where the funds will be allocated to an account. No funds will be sent directly to the head of household member.

Due to federal funding reductions, funds are limited and applications will be taken by the specified program requirements.

When funds are depleted, the application process will be terminated.

Applications will be accepted at the Rockingham County Division of Social Services, located at the Governmental Center, 411 NC HWY 65 Wentworth, North Carolina. If you are unable to come to the agency to complete an application due to a disability, please call 336-342-1394 and ask for someone in the Energy Assistance Program.

A New Year, A New You?

Is there a person on the planet that hasn’t made a New Year’s resolution—and then failed to follow through? Setting goals may be the easy part, but turning those goals into results….?

Well, we all know how hard that can be.

Whether you’re hoping to shed a few pounds, step up your level of exercise, or kick that smoking habit once and for all—you can take steps to improve your chances of success.

Here are just a few ideas.

Set SMART goals. First of all, know how to set goals that will help you succeed. Here is an example of a SMART goal: “To help me lose weight, I will walk at least 10 blocks—instead of 7—at least 5 days a week for the next month. Here’s what makes this a SMART goal: Specific: The goal is precise. Your goal isn’t just to walk more. With this goal, you will know exactly how many blocks you will walk each week.

Measurable: You can tell whether or not you have achieved the goal.

Achievable: Your goal should challenge you, but not be overwhelming. You’re already walking 7 blocks, 4 days a week. So you know that it’s likely you can walk 10 blocks, 5 days a week.

Relevant: This goal is appropriate because exercise is a key part of a weight-loss or weight-management plan.

Time-bound: Your goal is limited in time. At the end of a month, you can continue with this goal or commit to a new one.

Start small, think big. Starting with small steps can help you succeed. But as you set goals, keep an eye on the big picture: How does this goal fit in with the rest of your life? With the SMART goal above, for example, it may help to remember that exercise is good for your overall health, whether or not you lose weight. It may give you more energy, decrease stiffness, and help you keep up with your kids—or grandkids.

Stay motivated. Understanding the big picture is one way to stay motivated for the long haul.

What else keeps you motivated?

Try the buddy system. Have someone who’s supportive join you. It really works.

Visualize success. Picture yourself walking through the neighborhood. You can also use positive self-talk to stay on track. “I feel so much better after I get out for a walk.”

Reward yourself. Once you’ve met your goal, reward yourself with something material, like a movie or CD—but not food. Or, you can try something less tangible like a quiet afternoon sitting by a lake. `If you slip up, start over. This doesn’t make you a bad person.

Congratulate yourself for your past successes, and begin again.

Achieving Your Goals

The Senior Scoop

Having goals is what keeps us going. Sure, we all go through times when we aren’t focused on a goal and our lives just drift.

But when we do set a goal and achieve it, we feel great about ourselves. So what can we do to help us achieve a goal?

First, be specific when you set a goal. A vague goal causes non-commitment. A specific goal makes you accountable. For example, don’t set a goal to lose weight. Set a goal to lose X amount of weight.

Next, be realistic and make the goal attainable. Again, using weight as an example, don’t set a goal to lose 100lbs in 3 months.

That is not realistic and not attainable. Setting your goals too high is sure to get you discouraged and in the end, fail.

Set a deadline for your goals.

Again, this keeps you accountable. You’re not going to lose 100lbs in 3 months, so set a goal to lose 20lbs in 3 months. You have set a deadline and you are striving for something that is achievable. If you still have 80lbs to lose, do another 20 in 3 months, and so on.

Let’s stick with weight loss as example. Another tool for achieving goals is visualization.

Visualize how being 20 pounds lighter will feel. Visualize how your life might improve.

Visualize yourself doing the thing necessary to make your goal a reality.

Arm yourself with all the weapons at your disposal. One weapon that is always available

is education. Do your homework and educate yourself about your goal. Research how others have achieved that same goal. We live in an amazing technological age, use the technology at hand.

There is an app for practically everything. There is probably one that will aid you in achieving your goal.

Reach out to your goal, by reaching out for help. People are maybe the greatest tool you have in your arsenal. These people include your family, your friends, your co-workers or someone who has achieved the same goal that you are pursuing.

Asking for help is not weakness, it is strength. It proves your dedication to your goal.

The most important person you can rely on is the one who lives in the mirror. Without doubt our biggest critic is always going to be ourselves. We need to be our own biggest cheerleader. We need to try our best to be positive and we need to be kind to ourselves. Are you going to stumble? Of course you are, the key is to never stop trying and always believe in yourself.

The world is full of people who will doubt you, don’t be one of them.

There a few things more satisfying than achieving a goal.

They make us stronger, they give us hope and they build our selfesteem. You can obtain your goals in life, whether you think they are hard to reach or not.

You need to have some faith in yourself.

There is an old phrase, “to see ourselves as others see us.”

Unfortunately we can’t and when it comes to our body image we are without a doubt our harshest critics. Body image issues can affect men and women, boys and girls. Men seem to struggle less, and there is a double standard. Our society has a way of putting pressure on women to be thin, beautiful and perfect, whereas men have more leeway to be overweight and unkempt. Either way, both sexes can suffer from a negative body imagine.

Everyone wants to look their best, but that is not always possible. We are bombarded with images of “perfect” people in entertainment and sports who appear to be flawless. Keep in mind there are a few things happening here. First the images you see are more than likely altered to make these people look their best. Combine this with lighting, hairstyles, makeup artists and Photoshop and you have the “perfect” person.

Second, consider that these folks have trainers and chefs who cook them nothing but healthy food and drag them out of bed to workout. Finally, think about the sacrifice they make to look like that. It is not uncommon to hear performers tell stories about how they staved themselves for a certain role or to look a certain way. Does that sound like real life to you?

The point being is that what you see around you is not necessary reality. For this reason you need to put your body in perspective and give yourself a break. Many people believe that change comes from the inside.

You have to accept who you are and work to better yourself, not just your appearance, but your overall health.

Start with a good foundation. This means seeing your doctor to make sure you are healthy enough to take this journey. See a dietitian or do your homework on what you should and shouldn’t eat. Find out what type of exercise program works for you.

It’s important to realize that

losing weight and getting healthier will not happen overnight and quick fix diets and exercise apparatus don’t work. The answer is simple, eating right and exercising, which is anything but simple. You didn’t become overweight overnight and you won’t be able to reverse it overnight. You must be patient with the process and more importantly with yourself.

People who belong to Alcoholics Anonymous are very familiar with the phrase, “one day at a time.” The same philosophy can be used here. Did you eat well today? Did you exercise today? If so, that’s a win and puts you one step closer to your goal. There will absolutely be days when you don’t eat right and don’t exercise, and that’s okay! The key is to have more good days than bad. Consistency is the key. Don’t quit.

Speaking of consistency, nothing will throw you off faster than impatience. You will not see results immediately and it will take time. The easiest way to derail your consistency and give up is to weigh yourself or to expect too much too soon.

Being patient goes back to giving yourself a break.

The power to control your choices, good or bad, comes from inside. Taking on the challenge of weight loss can be anxiety inducing. You need to try and calm your mind, realize it is a journey and give it plenty of time. There will be good day and there will be bad days. Just don’t let the bad days turn into weeks and months. Always get back on the horse, as they say.

The weight loss game is 99% mental and your success lies within. That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t seek help.

You need positive reinforcement and role models. Use the resources available. You are a warrior and every warrior needs weapons.

Losing weight and getting healthy is a struggle for millions of people. This alone should tell you that it is not easy. To be successful look inside, give yourself time and don’t ever quit.

Free Clinic named in Top 5 in State The Free Clinic of Rockingham County was recognized recently as one of the top 5 Free and Charitable Healthcare Clinics in North Carolina at a meeting of the NC Association of Free and Charitable Clinics (NCAFCC.) The Free Clinic, which opened in May, 1998 was ranked among the top association clinics participating in the 2015 Annual Outcomes Survey to measure key health indicators for diabetes and hypertension patients.

Free Clinic of Rockingham County tracked a random sampling of 76 diabetes patient outcomes for regulation of blood sugar levels and 70 patients with hypertension for regulation of blood pressure levels. Outcomes were compared within the clinic for the first and second halves of 2015 to monitor patient improvement, and also against other NCAFCC clinics for the same period of time.

For the year, the percent of Free Clinic of Rockingham County diabetes patients with most recent blood sugar A1C levels less than 7 percent, 8 percent and 9 percent were respectively 51 percent, 81 percent, and 88 percent.

The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists recommends a level of 6.5 percent or below. A1C for someone without diabetes is 5 percent or less. Only 10 percent of the sampled diabetes patients had A1C greater than 9 percent.

For the sampled patients with hypertension/high blood pressure who were monitored through the year, 78 percent of the sampling had their last blood pressure of the year measured at less than 140/90. In the tally of results among participating clinics Free Clinic of Rockingham County was the second in the state behind the Scotland County Free Clinic.

Kim Rider, executive director for the Free Clinic, attributed the high performance to the consistent care provided by Shannon McElroy, PA-C and the clinic’s support staff in areas of triage, records maintenance, prescriptions program and health education.

She said the clinic works together to promote the best care and intervention for patients.

“Successful outcomes also are the result of the patients’ commitment to self-management of their conditions and their working with their health care team,” Rider said.

About the Free Clinic of Rockingham County, Inc. Founded in May 1998, the Free Clinic of Rockingham County, Inc. is a private, non-profit organization. The Clinic receives no government funding and is completely dependent on donations from individuals and businesses. The Free Clinic is designed to reduce the burden placed upon hospital emergency rooms by closing the access gap in the local healthcare delivery system. By providing primary and preventative medical care to Rockingham County’s most vulnerable population, Free Clinic patients experience improved health status and are able to be productive members of the workforce and provide for their families which produces a ripple effect of economic benefit across the county. To become a patient at the Free Clinic a person must have no health insurance, have income at or below 200% of the federal poverty level and live in Rockingham County.

Adding Food Items under the Christmas Tree at the City’s Public Works Department is employee Dale Chambers. The department collects canned goods for the Reidsville Soup Kitchen as part of its holiday canned food drive.

The Reidsville Public Works Department invites it s fellow City employees to what has become an annual tradition – a barbecue lunch with all the fixings and homemade desserts.

But the meal doesn’t come without a price. Employees are asked to bring canned goods for those in need.

Thursday’s lunch on December 15th at the Public Works Department on Vance Street was no exception.

More than 20 years ago, a City of Reidsville Public Works employee knew of a needy family on one of the trash routes. He encouraged his fellow employees to take on the family as an outreach project at the Christmas holiday. The department gathered up money, food, clothing and toys for the family. Each year they would receive suggestions for a family either from employees or others in the community.

As the years went by, there were so many suggestions for needy families, it became harder and harder for the department to choose. So a little over 10 years ago, finding out the Soup Kitchen on Arlington Street was in need of food items, Public Works changed its mission that year and

collected food for the organization.

This year the Public Works Department will again give the Soup Kitchen the food items it has collected. As street and line workers and sanitation employees, they see first-hand the needs of some of Reidsville’s residents.

“We all try to contribute something,” said Public Services Superintendent Lindsey Tuttle said. “We are trying to give back to our local community where we live and work.”

The Ball Corporation in Reidsville, which imploys 150 workers, announced December 12th it will close its Reidsville plant. According to officials the closing will happen in mid-2017.

The Reidsville plant which produces beverage cans, opened in 1978 and was bought by Ball in 1998 as part of the acquisition of Reynolds Metals Company.

As far as we know, the company has said employees could be provided with benefits and outplacement services and some employees have been told they should apply for other jobs within the Ball Corporation.

With the Christmas holiday so close to the announcement, the city of Reidsville as well as the employees were taken aback by the announcement, each scrambling to control the backlash in their own way.

The company claims many factors fed into the decision.

One of course was the closing of MillerCoors in mid 2016, which was their largest client. Another included the recent purchase of Rexam.

Scale Back, Big And Small

Saving can be hard, especially when you have kids. Kids have a lot of needs and wants.

Combine that with the monthly bills, and there may be nothing left for the savings account, at least not at first. There are ways to cut back, big and small. Try these tips.

Wait to purchase items until they are on sale, especially items that fall under the “want” category. Kid want a bike? Wait until winter when prices are reduced to make way for new merchandise.

Clip coupons for items you use often. Look for deals in magazines, newspapers, flyers and online. Shop on double and triple coupon days to get more bang for your buck.

Forgo some extras. Forget that cup of coffee at the drivethrough every morning. Make

your own coffee at home, fill up your thermos and away you go.

Let that magazine subscription or club membership run out.

Check out the magazine at the library or exercise at home.

Make your own. Know how to knit or sew? Make some clothes. Like to bake? Whip up your own baked goods for all of the special events in your life.

Almost out of cleaner? Make your own organic cleaners from simple substances, like lemon juice and vinegar.

Dine in. Eating out not only puts a dent in your wallet but packs on the pounds. Save yourself some dough and cut the calories by eating in as much as you can. Keep meals tasty with new recipes.

Opt for backyard entertainment. Forgo that big-name concert hours away in favor of a

free one downtown featuring local talent. Host birthday parties at home and offer plenty of oldfashioned fun, like three-legged races. Spend the day at the park or library.

Downsize. As you get used to cutting back, you can start making bigger changes. You can give Mother Earth a break and get rid of your second or third car. You can take fewer big vacations in favor of smaller ones at home. You can keep your house and pay a bit more on the mortgage each month to pay it off faster.

Spend less and save more.

There are dozens of ways you can go about this goal, and it doesn't have to be painful. Take steps to cut back here and there, and work your way up to bigger and better saving strategies.

The Garden of Eden Senior Center art projects decorate the center for the winter.

The walkway, in front and out back, is lined with the results of a “craft of the month” project where seniors painted tiles with some of their favorite themes.

On the walls of the walking track near the building are hung some 30 or so bright cheery paintings of one of the season’s favorite themes, snowmen. Seniors spent their time at the center painting these large wooden paintings and enjoying their time together.

Craft time at the center is 1pm each Friday. This is for any senior who wants to work on their own projects by themselves or join into the group to make new friends. Rockingham County Manager Announces Assignment of New Health Director The Rockingham County Division of Health and Human Services, Division of Public Health is pleased to announce the selection of Lucretia Hoffman as its new Public Health Director. She will begin her role December 19, 2016. Hoffman has over 10 years of experience working in the public, private and nonprofit sectors. Her experience in public health, managed-care, eduHoffman cation, and population health has given her the opportunity to work with culturally and economically diverse populations throughout the country.

Prior to joining the Rockingham County Division of Health and Human Services, she served as the Cultural and Community Health Initiatives Consultant for the N.C. Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities (NC OMHHD) in the N.C. Division of Public Health. At NC OMHHD, Hoffman’s role was to ensure that local health departments, Division of Public Health staff, health centers and community based organizations were equipped to handle the changing demographics and healthcare needs of North Carolinians. She provided technical assistance to organizations across the state on how to improve the quality of care provided to vulnerable populations as well as create and implement culturally competent policies and procedures.

Hoffman also serves as co-chair of the Social Determinants of Health Workgroup for the N.C. Collaborative Improvement and Innovation Network to Reduce Infant Mortality (NC COIIN).

She served as a Public Health Educator and Project Coordinator for the Forsyth County Department of Public Health in Winston Salem, North Carolina. She taught social-emotional learning for a large Latino social service organization and worked with Rush University’s Center for Urban Health Equity on a National Institutes of Health study intervention for children with comorbid asthma and obesity in Chicago, Illinois.

She also served as the Wellness Promotions Manager for the largest Medicaid managed-care organization in Washington, DC, where she coordinated the Early & Periodic Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment (EPSDT) well-child program, the diabetic screening program and assisted with NCQA and HEDIS audit preparation, improvement initiatives and reporting.

Hoffman has a Bachelor’s degree from Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts as well as a Master’s Degree in Public Health and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Illinois-Chicago. She was the 2009 David L. and Marcia K. Chicoine Scholar in Science and TechnologyBased Economic Development at the University of Illinois and speaks conversational Spanish.

Hoffman loves to travel, especially international, and is looking forward to exploring the greenways and rivers in Rockingham County. She is also active in several groups in her church.

County Manager Announces New Rockingham County CIO Rockingham County Manager Lance Metzler, announced this morning, the new Chief Information Officer (CIO) who will manage and supervise Information Technology for the County.

Derek Southern, a life-long resident of Stokesdale, will join Rockingham County Government on Dec. 21st.

Metzler said the Human Resources Dept. along with an executive panel, screened and interviewed several qualified candidates during the national search. Additional input was received from leaders in the technology field, and a final candidate rose to the top.

Metzler explained: “We wanted to hire a professional for the long-term; a people person who can work well with staff and department heads; a leader who understands how to manage projects successfully. Derek Southern joins our team to ensure that Information Technology will be functional, efficient, and effective.”

Southern said: “I’m proud to be from Rockingham County and excited to provide my very best to the County.”

He was part of the management team at Dynamic Quest, focusing on client engagement, and customer satisfaction. He earned the Employee of the Year Award in 2015 for his complete understanding of the entire business structure and desire to provide only exceptional service.

Southern worked through the levels of Information Technology at Burlington Industries/ ITG from 2001 to 2012, starting as a part-time employee while in school, and advanced to Desktop Support Manager.

A 1998 graduate of McMichael High School; he received his undergraduate degree in Information Systems and Operations Management in 2001 from the University of North CarolinaGreensboro; and in 2009 a MBA from UNC-G. Southern is heavily involved at Mt. From Root to Branch Local Genealogy Studies By Elvin Perkins, Jr.

A Tribute to Linda Cardwell Vernon Civil War Veterans of Rockingham County Part II The current MadisonMayodan Library opened to the public July 14, 2014. As a tribute to Linda Vernon for her tireless work in preserving the history and genealogy of Rockingham County, the new genealogy research room was named in her honor. The Linda Cardwell Vernon Genealogy Room has a large collection of books, journals, microfilm and family histories not only for the county, but the surrounding region and state as well.

Here continues Linda’s work recording the names and records of soldiers who served in the War Between the States who have ties to Rockingham County.

John Yancey Peay enlisted in Rockingham County on 3 May 1861 in Co. I, 13th NC Regiment.

He was born 12 June 1839 and died 25 June 1888 and is buried in a family cemetery south of Madison.

His parents were George W. Peay and wife Harriet Wall. His first marriage was to Elizabeth J. Gentry 13 March 1866 and his second marriage was to Sarah Jane Goolsby 12 January 1871.

James Marshall Sharp enlisted at Drewry’s Bluff, VA, on 1 September 1862 in Co. F, 45th NC Regiment and was in the battle at Gettysburg, PA, where he was wounded in the face in July of 1863. Later he was captured near Petersburg, VA, on 25 March 1865 and confined at Point Lookout, MD, until released 20 June 1865. He was the son of James Archer Sharp and wife, Jane Joyce, and was born 27 March 1844 and died 23 March 1910. He married 20 November 1866 Elizabeth M. Garrett. She was born 22 August 1845 and died 22 August 1938.

Rowan H. Steele, was the son of Daniel W. and Nancy Steele (her maiden name was also Steele) and was born 8 April 1844 in Stokes County and died in Mayodan 27 September 1917.

His wife was Nancy Jane Lind Hutcherson. His pension indicates he served in Co. D, 11th/19th or Co. H, 16th NC Battalion. His name appears on the Pension List of 1901. In an interview with his widow in 1947, Nancy Jane stated that her husband served as a courier for General Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Appomattox where he was slightly wounded in the head.

Joel Walters, born 11 May 1833, died 12 March 1911 at age 77. His wife was Mary H. Pratt.

He served in the 13th VA Bat. Artillery. His name appears on the Pension List of 1901.

James P. Turner enlisted in Co. D, 45th NC Regiment, 8 May 1862 in Wayne County, NC. He was captured near Petersburg, VA, on 2 April 1865 and confined at Point Lookout, MD, until his release on 21 June 1865. He was born 1827, the son of Tyree Turner, and died 1898. He married 29 June 1848 Alpha S. York, daughter of William York and

wife Sarah Brown. His wife was born in 1828 and died in 1884.

Joshua Thomas Wall enlisted in Co. F, 1st NC Regiment Engineers Corps on 1 May 1864.

He was born 26 May 1845 and died 22 August 1930, the son of Joshua Smith Wall and wife Caroline F. Heggie and is buried in the Heggie-Wall Cemetery located northeast of Mayodan.

He married 3 April 1879 Sarah Ann Adkins.

Zachariah Lindsay Wall enlisted in Co. F, 1st NC Regiment Engineers in May of 1864. He was born 3 August 1844, the son of Robert Wall and wife Penelope (Lindsay) Fitts, and died 3 July 1912. He is buried in a family cemetery west of Madison. He married 5 March 1868 Susan Elizabeth Webster.

Fenner Wilson enlisted in Co. D, 45th NC Regiment, on 8 May 1862 in Wayne County, NC. He was wounded in the right leg at Spotsylvania Court House, VA, in May 1864. He was later paroled in Greensboro on 18 May 1865. According to dates on his tombstone, he was born 27 February 1835 (in Rockingham County) and died 5 March 1916.

He was the son of Fenner Wilson, Sr. and wife Nancy Key. He married, around 1861, Adeline Simmons who was born in South Carolina 14 September 1843 and died 27 December 1928.

John Watt Wilson enlisted at Camp Holmes 5 September 1864 in Co. A, 18th NC Regiment and /or Co. F, 4th NC Battalion and was captured by the enemy near Petersburg, VA 25 March 1865.

He was confined at Point Lookout, MD, until released on or about 14 May 1865. He was the son of Thompson Wilson and wife Martha Godsey and married 14 June 1866 Sarah Ann Turner, daughter of William and Annie Webster Turner. According to dates on the tombstone, John W. was born 26 August 1846 and died 14 May 1921 and his wife was born 1 December 1848 and died 12 February 1916.

Walter Scott Wilson was born 15 February 1838 and died 12 March 1918. He was the son of Benjamin Franklin Wilson and wife Mary Eliza Reddick of Stokes County. He married 24 December 1868 Mary Frances Mitchell, daughter of Robert R. Mitchell and wife Ann Hurd. He enlisted in Co. H, 53rd NC Regiment or Co I, 13th NC Regiment.

Thomas M. Woodburn, born 27 Sept. 1823, died 28 May 1909. His parents were Robert Woodburn and Ann McCuiston. He married Jane Harris 9 Feb. 1858 in Rockingham County.

He served in Company B, 27th NC Infantry. His name appears on the 1901 Pension List.

James H. Wray, son of James Wray and wife P. Hamons, was born 17 July 1839 and died 12 March 1928.

He married 13 June 1876 in

Perkins Rockingham County, Mazzie Joyce, daughter of Reuben and Mazzy Martin Joyce. There were the parents of at least eight children and have many descendants in the area. He was also a pensioner.

John S. Crews, son of Samuel and Muriel Hatcher Crews, was born in Henry County Va. 28 August 1831, died 26 November 1903 and is buried in the old Mayodan Cemetery.

He enlisted in Wayne County, NC, on 17 May 1862 in Co. D, 45th NC Regiment and was wounded near Washington, DC, in July of 1864. He returned to

duty in fall of the same year. He surrendered at Appomattox Court House, VA, 9 April 1865. His name is included on the Pension List of 1901. John married Sarah Jane Mills, 8 February 1877.

Sarah was born 4 February 1855, died 19 August 1907.

Great Expectations: What Next?

Track owner Al Lillard was always looking for a tantalizing teaser that would keep interest in his races. On this hot Sunday afternoon, Lillard staged a footrace around the quarter mile track by all the drivers. Jimmy Griffin did well to be able to walk with a cane but was able to find one of his friends to take his place. The problem with this arrangement was that his substitute had just returned from Danville after visiting well

known bootlegger and racer Roy Doolin and had been in the Mason jar. Griffin’s friend shed his shoes and took his place in the line up for the jaunt around the blistering hot paved track.

Leading the race halfway around the oval, Griffin’s replacement succumbed to the heat, among other factors, and fell out. Griffin hoped that he would do better driving the race car than his friend at a footrace.

requesting to run larger engines.

There was a trend in all the surrounding tracks to go to the more modern engines that were more reliable and stronger. The drivers knew that this rule was coming and they hustled to find a replacement power plant to keep up with the competition. Some cars had made the swap and were ready to go. Melvin Chilton’s No.3 could not be ready in time for the driver Clarence Pickeral to try for his third win.

The July 2nd race was another wild one. Glen Smith and Jimmy Griffin took the heat races with Ralph Estes securing the consolation race. Then the fireworks began. Glen Smith of Stuart, Virginia was able to take the lead on the third lap of the feature. Griffin was pressuring Smith by running a strong second until the eight lap. Misfortune struck when Griffin’s right rear axle broke in the fourth turn.

Griffin’s out of control U2 crashed into the concrete wall in front of the grandstand causing the car to slide sideways in front of third place racer Floyd Goins.

The 7A car of Goins plowed into Griffin causing Goin’s car to roll over three times before it came to a dead stop on the concrete barrier in the infield. While this was going on, Lindburgh Moore’s car was hit in the rear by Alva Holland of Axton, Virginia while trying to avoid the big wreck.

Both Moore’s and Holland’s cars were able to continue on. Goins and Griffin were out for the day but more importantly neither driver was injured.

The race was restarted and ran up to the seventeenth lap when Ralph Estes of Draper lost a wheel. While the race was red flagged to clean up track debris, Estes was able to replace the wheel and return for the rest of the race.

Meanwhile, Glen Smith did not relinquish his lead the rest of the race putting him in the win column at Bi-State for the first time. Glen Smith’s No.20 was severely damaged in the wreck several weeks earlier when Owen Brown’s car ended up on top at the ticket booth. Melvin Brown of Martinsville came in second with Lindburgh Moore settling for third.

In a fast turn around for the 4th of July race, miraculously, Jimmy Griffin and Floyd Goins had repaired their badly damaged cars to be ready in just two days.

Bruised and banged up from their horrendous wreck, they climbed into their cars to do battle once again. Jimmy Griffin eked out a win in the consolation race with Clarence Pickeral and Norman Vaden of Madison taking the heats. In addition to the fund that assists with financial needs, the organization also maintains the Barry L. Joyce Resource Center in Madison.

Opened in 2013, the center has a computer resource room, as well as books and brochures on related cancer topics. The center also has support groups and offers yoga classes, massage therapy, information sessions and other creative outlets for those with cancer, as well as their caregivers.

The information program will be held in the Main Conference Room at Morehead Hospital, located at 117 E. Kings Highway, Eden. Space is limited and reservations are required.

Great Expectations... Continued race resumed, Pickeral managed to keep Gene Brown barely a car length away as he rolled under the checkered flag for his third win of the season. Behind Brown was Griffin taking third place and Floyd Goins securing fourth.

Since he was not ready, Melvin Chilton had his driver hold out on the Sunday July 2nd race. The new engine rules had the main competitors jumping to change into a more powerful power plant format. Chilton had acquired a Chrysler Spitfire engine to place in his No.3 Plymouth. Chilton had just run out of time to have his car out on the track for the July 2nd race but on the special July 4th race, it made its triumphant return. The 1933 Plymouth was a noticeably lighter car than the heavier Chevrolets which caused several car builders to opt for it. The Spitfire engine was still a flathead that had to compete with the more advanced Chevrolet over head valve engines. The Spitfire was not a high revving engine but produced a good amount of torque and when coupled with a truck rear differential like Chilton’s, it was perfect for the quarter-mile track The driver, Clarence Pickeral, said that the car was so light that two men could easily pick the rear of the car up to change the tire. The lightweight car and strong torque engine setup made the No.3 car a rocket coming off the turns. It was hard to touch.

The July 9th race had the attendance at about 1000 people to witness another barnburner.

Wilford Agee of Calloway, Virginia and Clarence Pickeral won the heat races and Floyd Goins won the consolation race.

The race had to be restarted several times because of cars leaving the track but when the racing resumed, Pickeral and Agee had the fans on the edge of their seats.

Agee was never more than a half a car behind or beside Pickeral the whole race. On the last lap, mayhem broke loose.

Pickeral blew his new Spitfire motor on the last lap but with momentum, still took the checkered, just a fraction of a second ahead of Agee. Jimmy Griffin bumped Ralph Estes causing Estes to be spun around. Cecil Barker tried to avoid the Estes car and found himself spun out.

There may have been some tensions arising from the bump-up.

Floyd Goins was not satisfied with coming in third and protested the Agee car. Agee refused to dismantle his engine for inspection and forfeited the second place winnings. Agee still collected the prize money for winning the heat race. Goins then became second place finisher with Gene Brown running third.

Pickeral claimed his fourth win.

Willie Chilton went into overdrive to repair his blown engine for the July 16th race.

There was probably more than one racer that swore under his breath when he saw Chilton’s No.3 coming through the gate.

Chilton’s car was now the one to beat. Clarence Pickeral easily took the first heat race with

Jimmy Griffin taking the second one. Bruce Baker took the consolation race.

In the feature race, Pickeral started on the pole with Chilton’s

car and secured first place on the first lap. In a surprise move, Cecil Barker blasted around Jimmy Griffin on the third lap and pressured Pickeral the rest of the way.

It was an unusually fast race: there were no wrecks for the sixteen cars that started the field.

Cecil Barker kept on attacking Pickeral for position but was unable to dislodge him from being first. Pickeral won his fifth victory with Cecil Barker from Draper taking a well deserved second place and for the third place finisher, Jimmy Griffin, was dead on his rear.

The good weather for the next race on the 23rd of July finally ran out. Clarence Pickeral and Floyd Goins won the heat races, with Shorty Riggins winning the consolation race. Before the feature could be started, a violent thunderstorm ended the day’s event. Track owner, Al Lillard quickly added the feature race to the next week’s program ensuring the fans would get a double dose of their favorite drivers.

The fans were packed in to see the extra race on July 30th.

Clarence Pickeral again won the first heat with Floyd Goins taking the second. Ziglar took the consolation. In what seemed a rerun, Clarence Pickeral took his sixth win of the season with Floyd Goins and Jimmy Griffin trailing.

The last week’s qualifiers that were rained out were lined up

after a brief intermission. In what many thought would be a repeat of the first feature, was anything but. Floyd Goins shot to the front and kept it to take his third win of the season. Pickeral must have wore his car out in the first feature, for third place behind Hank Thomas of Winston-Salem, was the best he could muster.

The first Sunday of August was designated to be the date of the mid-season championship race. One of Al Lillard’s rules of eligibility stated that the driver had to have entered a race during the season at Bi-State. That put seventy-eight potential drivers on the list. All the championship races had been loaded with drama and this one would be the most remembered of all--for the wrong reason. What could this possibly be?

School Is Cool!

Wentworth Elementary third grade student, TY Booker, wanted to do a project that gave back.

With the help of Ty and third grade teacher, Amanda Sikora, Wentworth participated in a toy drive sponsored by Toys for Tots. Starting November 28, students sent in new, unopened toys to donate to children in our area who wouldn't ordinarily have a gift to open this holiday season.

The school far exceeded their school-wide goal of filling two large boxes by December 14. Way to go Wentworth students for demonstrating such generosity during this season of giving.

Mrs. Dooley’s Kindergarten class at LeaksvilleSpray Elementary held a holiday handbell performance for parents and families. All enjoyed the time spent together and the music was wonderful.

On December 2, all Moss Street students were invited to attend "Merry and Bright Moss Street Night." Students stayed after school until 8:00 pm and participated in many fun holiday activities.

They played "reindeer games," made crafts, watched movies, ate pizza, played winter wonderland computer games, and even had their picture made with Santa Claus!

The first and second grade Williamsburg Elementary Wiggling Wildcats, under the direction of Nikki Meeks and Danielle Carl, treated staff and students to a rockin' performance on Dec. 13 and a night performance for parents on Dec. 8.

Score students adopt dress code Beginning with the 2016-17 school year, Score adopted a standard mode of dress for students. All students assigned to the Score long term program are required to wear khaki pants and a solid colored shirt which must be tucked in.

Score students earned two "dress down" days in December (Monday, 12/19 and Tuesday, 12/20).

Students are being rewarded with the dress down days for compliance with the new policy and a significant decrease in discipline referrals related to dress code. Rewarding positive behaviors is a pillar of the PBIS program at Score! Way to go Score students!

Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) is a proactive systems approach to establishing the behavioral supports and social culture needed for all students in the school to achieve social, emotional and academic success.

It was also conducted by Ms. Bonnaci and Mrs. Holland played the piano. Next was “Hine Ma Tov” with soloists Valerie White, Suzanna Drake, Amelia Lineberry & J’naiya Joyce. Their last song was a favorite “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad”. It featured 5th graders playing new ukuleles from a grant.

Mrs. Trent and Ms. Landreth’s 5th graders were up next playing their favorite piece of music, Pachelbel’s Canon, on

handbells.

Mrs. Belton, Mrs. A. Holland & Mrs. Knights’ kindergarten classes along with Ms. Blaney and Mrs. Stevens 1st grades came to the stage to perform. To the count of 3, they surprised the audience and donned their animal masks and sang “Who Built the Ark”.

Fourth grader Jenna Rosenbaum started each verse off as a solo.

Mrs. Biggs and Ms. Alley’s 4th grade classes then performed the “Carol of the Drums” with Boomwhackers. Most students had 2 boomwhackers (2notes) to play and lightly sang with the notes to navigate the music.

Last to perform were Mrs. Suddreth’s, Mrs. Campbell’s and Ms. Lockhart’s classes. They performed rhythms to “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” on colorful box drums, painted coffee can drums & rhythm sticks!

They all yelled Merry Christmas at the end!

Mrs. Long and Mr. Barker's K/1 combo class from Monroeton Elementary completed their winter service project by visiting Avante of Reidsville Nursing Home on December 16. With the help of Monroeton's music teacher, Natalie Jobe, the students performed by singing and dancing for the residents.

Students then handed out homemade ornaments they had made with the help of Monroeton's art teacher, Wanda Pruitt. Both the students and teachers dressed up and enjoyed spreading cheer to some of the elderly residents of the community as they continued to learn what it means to give back to their community.

Various cultures explored at Stoneville Elementary The month of December has been a celebration of cultural arts at Stoneville Elementary School with performances of music and dance. Under the direction of music teacher Renee Halpin, the fourth graders, fifth graders and the Musical Bearings Chorus presented two performances of their "Snowlarious" winter program on December 8-9.

The fourth graders delivered a musical rendition of the

Appalachian folk tale "Jack And The Old North Wind". The program included puppets, Orffestration by fourth grade students and plenty of "snow".

The fifth grade recorder ensemble presented a multicultural display of seasonal songs from three different continents. For the finale, the Musical Bearings Chorus presented the musical "Bring On The Snow!" by Andy Beck and Brian Fisher with additional music by Sally K.

Albrecht and Jay Althouse.

The musical brought a "blizzard" of smiles and laughs with winter jokes and puns. For the evening performance, a display of luminaries lighted the sidewalks and warmed the hearts of staff, students and community members as they attended the performances. Community members returned to the school for a special guest performance

Rockingham County Middle School Supports Operation Christmas Child A shoe box can have a big impact on a child's life. During October and November, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) at Rockingham County Middle School (RCMS) collected items for shoe box gifts as part of the Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child Project. On November 21, members of the FCA packed 70 shoe boxes that included small toys, school supplies, hygiene items, and candy. Each box was labeled for either a boy or a girl and included an appropriate age range. The boxes will be shipped to children around the world.

2016 Vex Robotics Competition On Saturday, December 3, McMichael High School Robotics Team hosted its 2016 Vex Robotics Competition (VRC) with a total of 24 teams in attendance. Also, for the first time, hosted a VEX IQ competition for elementary and middle schools. The 2016 VRC game "Starstruck" consist of 4 robots on the field trying to throw or dump stars and cubes on the opponent's side of the fence. At the end of the day, McMichael was able to capture 1 tournament champion title and 2 tournament finalist awards. Also, McMichael students, Hussain Ahmad and Zach Knight, were given the highest honor of vex robotics: the excellence award, which goes to an overall outstanding robot along with an amazing engineering notebook and interview. Morehead High students were able to capture both "Robots Skills" award and the "Judges" award.

McMichael and Morehead students are now gearing up for more competitions and the State Championships this spring.

Students in Belinda Farmer's class at South End Elementary are very proud authors, as they a wrote a book which was recently published. They wrote aboutCommunity Heroes, which is the title of the book. They presented South End's Resource Officer, Officer D. Velazquez, with a copy since three of the students wrote about him as their community hero.

Bethany Elementary Kindergarten Celebrate Thanksgiving Every year during Thanksgiving, Bethany Elementary kindergarten students dress in costume to eat lunch together. They make a vest (with their Indian name), headband, pilgrim hat and collar. They discuss how the first Thanksgiving was all about the Pilgrims eating with the Indians. Half of the students dress as pilgrims and the other half dress as Indians then the students all feast together. This is an annual activity, the older students love to remember the event and the kindergarten students love to participate.

Board members Amanda Bell, Virginia Hoover, Ophelia Wright and Bob Wyatt were in attendance for this colorful display of cultures through dance.

The program opened with the second grade Bear Foot Dancin' group presenting the traditional Colombian dance Cumbia. This group is under the direction of Ms. Manrique and Ms. Velez.

The group was outfitted with hand sewn skirts which were specially created for the group by Luz Elena Baena and Magnolia Baena. The proceeds from the December luminary sale made it possible for the school to purchase these outfits through their arts program.

The troops overseas would like you to send it to everybody you know.

Actor Denzel Washington and his family visited the troops at Brooks Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas,(BAMC) recently. This is where soldiers who have been evacuated from Germany come to be hospitalized in the U.S., especially burn victims. There are some buildings there called Fisher Houses. The Fisher House is a hotel where soldiers' families can stay, for little or no charge, while their soldier is in the hospital. BAMC has quite a few of these houses on base, but as you can imagine, they are filled most of the time. While Denzel Washington was visiting BAMC, they gave him a tour of one of the Fisher Houses. He asked how much one of them would cost to build. He took his checkbook out and wrote a check for the full amount right there on the spot. The soldiers overseas were amazed to hear this story and want to get the word out to the American public, because it warmed their hearts to hear it.

The question is, 'Why do: Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Tom Cruise and other Hollywood fluff make front page news with their ridiculous antics, and Denzel Washington's Patriotism doesn't even make the newspapers? Well now it has! A true American and friend to all in uniform!

Spending time in the hospital can be a challenge, and the last thing you need is another setback on your road to recovery. Computers, Cameras and a Dedicated Staff Save Nearly 3,000 Lives Cone Health’s first-in-the-state tele-ICU marks 10 years of making a difference in the care of thousands of people.

“With intensive care patients, things can change moment to moment,” says Rakesh Alva, MD, medical director, eLink. “You need a second set of eyes, and the tele-ICU provides them.” That second set of eyes has saved nearly 3,000 lives since Cone Health turned on the state’s first tele-ICU (intensive care unit) 10 years ago. The tele-ICU allows a team of intensive care specialists to remotely watch ICU patients in multiple Cone Health hospitals from a single clinical operations room.

“It was very, very impressive,” recalls Patrick Wright, MD, on seeing a tele-ICU while Cone Health was first exploring the technology. “We immediately recognized the potential this had for our community.” Hospital staff routinely monitor the breathing, heart rates and other vital signs of patients in an ICU. But few ICUs have intensive care doctors on hand 24/7. A tele-ICU fills that gap: patient vital signs are sent to the clinical operations room where intensive care nurses watch over them with the help of a computer. The computer runs all of the data through programs that can spot problems before they develop.

“After installation of the tele-ICU system and its staffing, our ICU mortality index fell. It was exciting. Lives were being saved, and they still are today,” adds Wright. Cone Health ICUs have 20 percent fewer deaths than would be expected in nonmonitored ICUs. Patients also spend fewer days in intensive care.

Approximately 850 times a year, the computer program and near-constant surveillance by 17 critical care nurses find potential patient problems. High-definition cameras in Cone Health ICUs allow a critical care nurse or doctor to examine a patient – even the patient’s pupils – remotely. The remote team can provide advice on a patient whose condition is deteriorating or answer questions bedside nurses may have about a patient in the middle of the night.

Cone Health’s tele-ICU monitors 163 beds at Alamance Regional Medical Center, Annie Penn Hospital, The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Wesley Long Hospital and Women’s Hospital. There are also mobile monitoring units that can be quickly set up in Cone Health emergency departments, expanding

From the Desks of Eden City Hall Smith River Greenway to get grant for parking On November 10, 2016, the City of Eden received a Rockingham Community Foundation grant of $16,931 to expand parking at the River Road Smith River Greenway entrance. The grant was made possible by a $250,000 Duke Energy grant provided the Foundation in 2015. The funds will enable the city to create a second-tier parking area and provide up to twenty new spaces.

The Smith River Greenway River Road trail head includes the greenway, picnic shelter and Island Ford Smith River access point. Since its 2008 opening, the greenway has become one of Eden’s most popular attractions

During summer evening hours and early weekend mornings, a lack of parking has frequently been an issue. Patrons have been forced to park on a hill adjacent to the established parking area.

The new parking area will be created above the existing lot, and will include guard rails and a widened roadway to allow easy access into and out of the lot.

“We are very grateful to Duke Energy and the Rockingham Community Foundation for making this much-needed improvement possible,” stated Mike Dougherty, Director of Economic Development for the City of Eden. “The city has promoted its natural resources and

recreational opportunities so we want to make it as easy as possible for patrons to enjoy these amenities.”

Work should begin on the project in early January of 2017 and be completed in thirty days’ time. The city has been seeking to expand its trail system. A letter of inquiry was sent to the Dan River Water Resources Fund seeking permission to submit a full application for a Matrimony Creek trail. Research is also being conducted on other potential trail sites, including one adjacent to the Leaksville Landing river access point.

Grant funding is being sought for these projects.

Earlier this year, the Eden City Council decided to be proactive as our community was faced with additional blows to the Eden economy. We began a process for a Strategic Community Visioning Plan. The firm of J.M. Teague and Associates was hired to assist the City with this undertaking.

An effort such as this can only be successful if it is inclusive to all of the various facets of the lives of the citizens of Eden.

A steering committee was selected in the hopes that its members would represent a cross section of viewpoints and

expertise from around the community. The chairman of this group is Dana Weston, CEO of Morehead Memorial Hospital.

This committee is made up of people with education backgrounds, public service backgrounds, business leaders, local entrepreneurs, members of the faith based community, representatives of local industry, the millennials, the baby boomers, teenagers, those that are retired and those working for a living or seeking work. The City is seeking input from everyone possible regarding life in and plans for the future of Eden.

Saying this is like saying, “No one remembers or thinks to stop in and shop here, so I can’t afford to remind them I’m here and tell them what I can do for them.” Sound like a business plan. Not so much.

When business is extra slow, that’s when you need the boost publicity creates; a buzz to remind former customers to visit and tell prospective customers what you're all about! Sitting by and doing nothing when business is slow only makes it even slower as time goes on. How is business going to pick up without your name and business being out there for others to see?

There is so much competition out there you have to keep your name out in the public’s

eye to compete. The big box stores and national chains don't say business is slow so I won't advertise. Did you ever have a day you didn’t hear or see something about McDonald’s?

Them Wrong A blonde was complaining to her friend about constantly being called a dumb blonde. Her friend tells her "go do something to prove them wrong! Why don't you learn all the state capitals or something?"

The blonde thinks this is a great idea, and locks herself up for two weeks studying.

The next party she goes to, some guy is making dumb blonde comments to her. She gets all indignant and claims, "I'm NOT a dumb blonde. In fact, I can name ALL the state capitals!"

The guy doesn't believe her, so she dares him to test her. He says "Okay, what's the Capital of Montana?"

Cross Recently a new neighbor, called the local township administrative office to request the removal of the Deer Crossing sign on our road.

Dear Technical Support, Last year I upgraded Girlfriend 1.0 to Wife 1.0 and noticed that the new program began unexpected child processing that took up a lot of space and valuable resources. No mention of this phenomenon was included in the product brochure.

In addition Wife 1.0 installs itself into all other programs and launches during system initialization where it monitors all other system activity. Applications such as fishing weekend 10.3 and Bowlingbash 2.5 no longer run, crashing the system whenever selected.

I can not seem to purge Wife 1.0 from my system. I am thinking about going back to Girlfriend 1.0 but un-install does not work on this program. Can you help me? Mr. Powell To: Mr. Powell, This is a very common problem men complain about but is mostly due to a primary misconception. Many men upgrade from Girlfriend 1.0 to Wife 1.0 with the idea that Wife 1.0 is merely a "UTILITIES and ENTERTAINMENT" program.

Wife 1.0 is an OPERATING SYSTEM and designed by its creator to run everything. It is impossible to un-install, delete, or purge the program from the system once it is installed. You can not go back to Girlfriend 1.0 because Wife 1.0 is not designed to do this. Some have tried to install Girlfriend 2.0 or Wife 2.0 but end up with more problems than the original system Look in your manual under WarningsAlimony/Child Support.

I recommend that you keep Wife 1.0 and just deal with the situation. Having Wife 1.0 installed myself, I might also suggest you read the entire system regarding General Protection Faults (GPFs). You must assume all responsibility for faults and problems that might occur.

The best course of action will be to push apologize button, then reset button as soon as lock-up occurs. System will run smooth as long as you take the blame for all GPFs. Wife 1.0 is a great program, but is very high maintenance.

Legend has it that there is a bar in New York where, in the Ladies' Room, there is a very special mirror. If one stands in front of the mirror and tells the truth, one is granted a wish. However, if one tells a lie, *POOF* you are instantly swallowed up by the mirror, never to be seen again.
