UNITED WAY 900K GOAL Despite layoffs and plant closings, and the highest unemployment rate in the Piedmont Triad, the United Way of Rockingham County announced today it has reached its 100% of its 2008-2009 campaign goal by raising $900,744.00. The continued generosity and devotion to community has been an inspiration to Sheriff Sam Page, the 2008 Campaign Chair for United Way of Rockingham County. “Because of these gifts, over 30,000 people in Rockingham County will continue to receive vital services such as food and utility assistance, after school childcare, meals on wheels, and emergency rescue.” Along with gifts from thousands of donors who work in hundreds of companies, local governments, and nonprofits, the United Way of Rockingham County was fortunate to raise funds from two special events during the campaign. Williams Gas Pipeline-Transco employees held a golf tournament on October 3, 2008 that raised $ 23,886 with the contributions being matched dollar for dollar by Williams Gas PipelineTransco. Also, for the first time, a “Ride United” motorcycle ride was held April 18, 2009 that was jointly sponsored by Wolf Creek

REACHES Harley Davidson and the Harley Owners Group. 63 riders participated and $1,263 was raised for the United Way of Rockingham County. Both Wolf Creek Harley Davidson and the United Way of Rockingham County want to make “Ride United” an annual event. Rick Hurley, Executive Director of United Way of Rockingham County explained that “United Way is pleased it reached its goal of $900,000 but we know that we need to raise more dollars in the future.” The United Way of Rockingham County raised $1,100,000 in the 2005 campaign and the demand for some services such as food, rent and utility assistance, have nearly doubled since 2005. Hurley added, “It is important that we help the victims of job layoffs and plant closings, but we cannot forget our kids who are falling behind in school, our elderly who are neglected, or the fire victims whose basic needs go unmet. We must work together to do what matters in our community.” United Way of Rockingham County, an IRS 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is based in the county seat of Wentworth, NC.. For more information or to register please contact Kathryn Holmes at (336) 342-8230. • A 1.3 mile narrow path was cut on farmland by what was termed a “weak” tornado. One barn was totally distroyed, and a vacant house was damaged on Frank & Mae Miller’s farm on Manuel Road. • The Rockingham County School system was hit with a $397,580 budget cut from the state in May.
At the meeting of Rockingham County Judicial Center Coordinating Committee, April 30, 2009, the transitional team was presented. They are in training to find out how to run the new jail. Progress on building the new jail is proceeding as fast as possible so that the prisoners now held in the jail annex can be moved out of that building. Once they are moved, the old annex building can be torn down and work begun on building the new courthouse. The architect has developed potential plans for an addition to the new jail, giving two possible scenarios. The first was for a 48bed jail pod at an estimated cost of $1,689,750. He also presented plans for doubling the number of beds to 96, at an estimated cost of $3,582,018.17. The County Commissioners have already
approved the 48-bed addition, but they must now decide whether to double it to 96. According to Mr. Smith, with Moseley Architects, it will take six weeks to have plans ready for bidding. If the price comes in too high from the current contractor, then it will be put out for bids. The architect advised that now is a good time to proceed since the economic situation is the way it is. He doesn’t seem to realize that many of the people paying for this project are in economic trouble themselves. In my opinion, not enough thought was given in the design process to keeping the project economically designed and built. Water pressure has been too low to serve the new 911 Center, but this problem seems to be solved. This has been a “tiger in the tank” - water tank, that is. The
911 Center has been completed and remained unoccupied so long that it looked as though it might have to be refurbished. The current road name for access to the 911 Center and the courthouse/jail complex is Prison Road. A name change was discussed. One suggestion was to conduct a contest for the public to submit names for the road, with the possibility of a prize being awarded to the winner. My own suggestion is “Hilton Court” to match the design and decor! Mike Smith, Facilities Projects Manager, gave a report on the LEEDS process and said it is going well. Change orders have been on the minus side, so far. Information on the LEEDS building requirements can be found on the Internet, if anyone is interested.

DOG TRAINING CRUEL?
By Adam Witherspoon Training Director, Shiloh K-9 Dog Training Services LLC
Recently I was asked if anything that we did training dogs is cruel? Sometimes I have to grab myself by the shirt collar, or give myself a good mental slap in the face when I get asked that, because generally it comes from someone else talking to that person giving their two cents about something they know absolutely nothing about. It is a frequently asked questions to many trainers in the U.S., and with all the pit bull horror stories, and animal cops on tv, I understand why it is so easy to be mislead to think dog training could be cruel. My answer the young lady was this: “Is it cruel to educate a child?”
CONCERT

a dog. Corrections are needed, but gentle and kind, not harsh. So I would encourage anyone interested in learning about dog training to further explore it’s roots and methodologies, and I would strongly encourage those with a set in stone opinion that dog training is cruel, to visit myself or any other reputable trainer to in fact learn the truth, versus spreading unfounded rumors. And just a note thanking Lisa Doss with Eden’s Own Journal for the hard work they do there. I enourage everyone to get out there and tell your friends about the paper, and continue to support them and their advertisers. They are a true breath of fresh air here in Rockingham County.

LOSING TEACHING POSITIONS
The 2009 -2010 school year is going to be a tough one for the county school system with enrollment continuing to decline. The budget is expected to ony provide funding for the programs and items that are in presently in place. A hiring and expenditure freeze was put into effect on April 13th which will also pre-
SENIOR SCOOP
She responded “of coarse not!” So I ask, why would it be cruel to educate a dog? Now the methods used are often questioned, but true dog training is education to a dog. It should never consist of beating, choking, scolding beyond belief, or any one of a hundred different tactics I have been asked about. See, if you do any of these things to a dog, then you are not training, you are practicing tyranny. The British did that to us about 235 years ago, and we didn’t stand for it and had a revolution. We did learn a lesson, but it was a lesson to avoid and become free, and this isn’t what we want to teach our dogs. So there is no room for physical or mental abuse towards

vent the 14 new buses ordered from even being put on the road yet. This freeze won’t affect the ActivBoards that were already ordered and prepared for. The toughest hit is that the school system will lose 26 teaching positions because of the declining enrollment. One assistant principal postition will also
be eliminated. The teachers positions will be elimiated through attrition. But a state Senate budget is in the works now that would increase the class size by two students, meaning Rockingham County could have to cut up to 60 teaching postions in addition to the 26 taken by attrition.

“HAPPY MUSIC” AT THE MAYODAN CHARLIE POOLE FESTIVAL HOMECOMING M.S. Aiken
EDEN - North Carolina banjo player and singer Charlie Poole was set apart from many southern string band leaders by several factors, says an astute friend of the Charlie Poole Music Festival, but one of his distinguishing characteristics was his eclectic and wide-ranging musical interests. Those who knew him said that when Charlie bought recordings or listened to them, he never listened to typical stringband fiddle and banjo music, but instead gravitated toward recordings of blues, jazz and vaudeville artists. His repertoire included traditional mountain tunes, sentimental parlor pieces, variations on traditional ballads from the British Isles, and Charlie's personal adaptations of vaudeville, blues, jazz, and ragtime music. This year's concert, to be held June 12-14 in Eden,NC, focuses on these elements of Charlie's music. Dom Flemons, a member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, excels in ragtime and blues (as well as other stringband styles in the AfricanAmerican tradition.) The East River String Band sometimes performs with Dom, and their renditions of ragtime, blues, and jugband material brings a smile to the face of those who've never heard any of this music, at least not played on
string instruments. The Wiyos also play this sort of music with strong vocals and vaudeville-like stage patter. (How many chances to you get to see a guy play washboard and harmonica at the same time? or see a chrome-bodied ukulele.) These elements of Charlie's music will bring a smile to the face of almost anyone, and musicians will be impressed by the skill and virtuosity of these musicians. This is a great chance to see and hear some infectious, happy music that folks these days seldom get a chance to enjoy. The Eden Fairgrounds at 13970 NC 87 N will host the concert on Friday evening, June 12, beginning at 6 PM. Tickets are $15 for the Friday concert or for Saturday’s day-long competitions, and a week-end pass for the whole festival is $25. See www.charlie-poole.com for discounted tickets bought in advance on line. Basic camping is available at the Fairgrounds during the preceding week with a charge of $10 (maximum $20). This project has received Grassroots Arts Program support from the Rockingham County Arts Council and the N. C. Arts Council. For more information, see www.charlie-poole.com, or call 336-623-1043.
In Memory of Rita Swinson by Mary Nahas of Downtown Crafter's Mall, Reidsville Rita Swinson was taken from the world too soon. For the last year and a half, we've had the privilege of having Rita's handmade treasures in our store. She designed the best reversible "booty bag" pocketbooks in the county and she weaved exquisite cloth rugs. Yet, that's only a small part of what made Rita so special. As a friend, she was always quick to offer a soft-spoken word of encouragement. She'd giggle about the strange things we'd trade for our crafts, like torn pieces of old shirts traded for dismantled jean pockets. As an employee of Rockingham County Youth Services, Rita went beyond the call of duty. She felt love and compassion for the pre-teen girls who were separated from their families. Rita took them shopping and bought them special treats. She made crafts with them and became a second mother to them. One day Rita had me paint a blue rose on a glass ornament with the name of the little girl's mother so that the little girl could give her mom a special gift. She was a kind and gentle soul who never spoke ill of anyone, and she left an impression on everyone she touched, especially her husband Mike and son Brock. I am a better person for having known her. Rita will be sorely missed by all of us here at the crafter's mall and especially by the children she has forever touched.

THE RALEIGH REPORT From the Office of Representative Nelson Cole
The following information is directly from a memo prepared by Barry Boardman, Ph.D., our chief economist in the Fiscal Research Division of the General Assembly. The numbers he presents below represent a consensus between the Fiscal Research Division and the Office of State Budget and Management. Current Year Revenues The estimated revenue shortfall for the current year has risen from $2.217 billion to $3.167 billion, an additional decrease in revenues of $949.5 million over the January forecast. Estimates are for General Fund collections to fall an unprecedented 10.8% below what was collected in FY2007-08. Looking over collections data dating back to 1971, the state has never experienced a fall-off in collections of this magnitude. Of the last two recessions, only the 2001-02 baseline shortfall was of major significance at 6.2%. Most of the change in the May forecast is due to an unparalleled fall in April income tax collections. April 15 final payment checks fell 39.7%. A primary reason is the widespread
EDEN HISTORIC MUSEUM WINS COMMUNITY APPEARANCE AWARD On April 27, 2009, The Eden Historic Museum was chosen for the Community Appearance Award that is given out monthly by the City of Eden Community Appearance Commission. The award recognizes the work that the Eden Preservation Society has completed in transforming a former retail store into a community museum. Members Pat and Melissa Whitten, Julie Ganis, Jane Haines and many others have contributed to this beautiful addition to the Olde Leaksville Shopping District. The museum has hosted many memorable events, such as the Jesse James, Thomas Day, World War II, and Making of the River Boatman Mural exhibits. When this building was nominated for a North Carolina Main Street Award in August of 2008, over 3, 600 volunteer hours has been spent on establishing the museum and in creating the various exhibits that have been presented there. As of mid-2008, visitors from thirteen North Carolina counties, six, Virginia counties and eight additional states had toured the museum.

impact of the recession. Declines in all sectors of the economy have accelerated losses in income, especially from capital gains in the equity and real estate markets. The January forecast envisioned a decline in final payments of 25%, which was greater than the last two recessions (2021%), but nowhere close to the 39.7% decline actually experienced this April. In many years a “ballooning” effect can occur at this time of the year when first-quarter estimated income tax payments from high-income individuals track the final payment experience. For example, estimated tax payments fell 40.7% this April, compared to the 29.1% decline in January. The revised sales tax estimate is essentially the same as the January estimate. The reason is the growth of this tax has slowed at the expected rate. Baseline sales tax collections for the year are expected to finish down 6.5% versus last year. Heavy losses for the first and second quarter of 2009 of 9% will result in a baseline loss of 6.5% for the fiscal year. Withholding tax receipts on wages and salaries rise and fall more gradually than some of the more volatile taxes. The January forecast had built in slower growth for the latter part of the year due to the continued employment losses. Therefore, little change was made to withholding in the April update for the rest of the fiscal year. Through April withholding receipts are down 1.6%, and this downward trend is expected to continue. Read th June 5th Issue of Eden’s Own / Couty Star for Rep. EDEN’S
UTILITY BILLING CHANGES
By Blair Barker, Billing and Collections Clerk
EDEN - For many years, citizens of Eden have received only six utility (water, sewer and garbage) bills a year - one every other month. Effective July 1, the Finance Department will begin billing on a monthly basis. Monthly water and sewer bills provide frequent, timely feedback about your water consumption. In the past, a leak may not have been detected until the end of your two-month billing cycle and, as a result, you would end up paying for a leak for two months rather than only one month. In addition, monthly billing makes it easier for you to budget for water and sewer costs. The Finance Department
offers several convenient ways for citizens to pay many of their city bills. It provides citizens with new levels of convenience, cash management and benefits from credit card reward programs along with providing a safe, secure and proven way to reduce paperwork, speed transactions and eliminate errors. • Option I - Electronic payments allow citizens to pay utility bills, recreation payments and other miscellaneous payments using all major credit and debit cards via our website: www.EdenNC.us • Option II - We can accept MasterCard, Visa and debit cards at the counter or MasterCard and Visa by telephone. • Option III - Automatic bank draft. Customers who prefer to
pay by bank draft must come to the Finance Department to set up a bank draft. • Option IV - We accept cash, check and money order by mail or in the office. We hope that you will take the time to consider each of these payment options and hopefully one will work for you. The city does not charge additional fees for these payment types. Our employees are eager to provide both service and information to those who request it. If you do not find the information you seek within our website, please stop by the Finance Department at City Hall or call 623-2110, option 1 for a personal response to your inquiry.

BOYS & GIRLS CLUB SUMMER FEST PROGRAM
EDEN - If you’re looking for an affordable, safe and positive environment for your kids this summer, the Boys and Girls Club is the place for you! The Boys & Girls Club of Eden Summer Fest Program was a huge success in 2008 according to Executive Director Amy Nalley. “This was our first year offering a summer program and it turned out to be very successful. We had a terrific group of young people and staff members who made the program educational and most importantly, fun.” The Boys & Girls Club of Eden will again offer a summer program in 2009. One important change for the summer is the hours of operation. With so many parents working, hours have been changed to 7:15AM to 5:30PM. Other changes included a structured program with kids being assigned in small groups according to their ages. With help from the Eden Fire Department, Eden Police Department, Department of Public Health and Mental Heath, Eden Library, businesses, individuals and board members the club is able to offer several great activities. Activities included: bike safety, fire safety and Splash Down Day, girl scouts, swimming, a visit to vegetable gardens, cooking class, conflict resolution and resistance training
classes, , Summer Olympic competitions and we will finish off the summer with Sloppy Fest 2009. All this for only $125.00 for current members and $165.00 for new members. This price includes programs for the full 8 weeks, lunch as well as membership until December 31, 2009. Now it is time for summer to start and the club is ready. If you’re looking for a safe and positive place for your children the Boys & Girls Club is the place for you. Please remember during the school year the club offers homework help, tutoring, computer classes, horticulture club, Youth of the Month/Year Program, Junior Staff, exercise program, peer relationship, nutrition and alcohol/drug education prevention classes plus FUN. Buses are available to transport kids from Leakesville Spray, Douglas, Holmes Middle School and Morehead High School for no charge. The Boys & Girls Club van will also be available to youth from Central Elementary for a cost of $8.00 per week. Memberships are available to youth ages 6 to 18 for a low annual fee of $40.00 and we now have junior memberships for kid’s ages 3 to 5 at a cost of $15.00 per year. Athletics are also offered at the club. “We are now at the beginning of baseball and softball sea-
son but offer programs in football, flag tag football, cheerleading, basketball fall soccer and indoor soccer, ” according to Zack Long the Athletic Director. The Boys & Girls Club realizes this community has needs and they are meeting those needs. By concentrating on 3 key areas: Academic Success, Healthy Life Styles and Character/Leadership Development the Club is impacting today’s youth. One example is the Power Hour or homework help program which showed an increase in grade averages of 9% last school year from the members who participated. According to Amy Nalley, “we are making a difference. Through our programs and the generosity of business’s and individuals in this community we are working to decrease school drop out rates, decrease youth obesity rates and increase community involvement”. Please visit the website at www.bgceden.com or visit 1026 Harris St, Eden to sign up today for programs, volunteer, donate or get involved to help change or even save the life of a child. You may also call 627-7960 for more information.

SUBWAY NAMES MANAGER OF THE YEAR REIDSVILLE - Reidsville resident and long-time SUBWAY employee Kimberly Neal has a new title - “Manager of the Year.” Ms. Neal was awarded the honor at the NC SUBWAY® Restaurant Owners’ annual spring meeting held in April at the Hilton Hotel in Raleigh. Ms. Neal was one of 12 managers selected by SUBWAY field consultants from the more than 700 SUBWAY Restaurants located throughout the Tar Heel state. “This is a tremendous honor for Kim. She is a great ambassador for our SUBWAY Restaurants, and for the community,” said Andy Strand, director of marketing, who with Debra and Mark Overby own 12 SUBWAYS in the area. When the first SUBWAY Restaurant opened in Reidsville in 1988, Kim Neal was a recent high school graduate. She was hired as a sandwich artist just three months after the store’s opening. Twenty-one years later, Kim is still at the same store with a hard-working and dedicated attitude that has not wavered, Strand said. The mother of four boys,

URGES PRECAUTIONS AGAINST
EDEN - While no confirmed cases of swine flu have been reported in North Carolina, health officials at Morehead Memorial Hospital met Monday to make preparations for handling an outbreak, should one occur, and recommended that the public take precautions against the spread of the disease. Swine flu is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by a type A influenza virus that regularly causes outbreaks of influenza among pigs. Swine flu viruses do not normally infect humans; however, human infections with swine flu do occur. Public health officials have determined that this strain of swine flu virus, A(H1N1), spreads from human to human and can cause illness. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) issued an advisory Monday indicating the current situation regarding the outbreak of swine influenza is evolving rapidly with the swine flu having already spread to at least six other countries besides Mexico. As of Tuesday, April 28, the United States Government has reported 50 laboratory confirmed human cases of swine influenza A(H1N1), with no deaths. In Mexico, nearly 2,000 people are believed to be infected, with more than 150 deaths attributable to the virus. The outbreak is ongoing and additional cases are expected. The symptoms of swine flu in people are similar to the symptoms of seasonal flu in humans and may include: • Fever (greater than 100 degrees Fahrenheit) • Sore throat • Cough • Stuffy nose • Chills • Headache and body aches • Fatigue Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting associated with swine flu. Severe illness (pneumonia and respiratory failure) and deaths have been reported with swine flu infection in people. Like seasonal flu, swine flu may cause a worsening of underlying chronic medical conditions.

For The Fun Of It PRICELESS OBSERVATIONS My wife has a slight impediment in her speech. Every now and then she stops to breathe. - Jimmy Durante I have never hated a man enough to give back his diamonds. - Zsa Zsa Gabor Only Irish coffee provides in a single glass all four essential food groups: alcohol, caffeine, sugar and fat. - Alex Levine My luck is so bad that if I bought a cemetery, people would stop dying. - Rodney Dangerfield Money can't buy you happiness .. But it does bring you a more pleasant form of misery. - Spike Milligan Until I was thirteen, I thought my name was SHUT UP. - Joe Namath I don't feel old. I don't feel anything until noon. Then it's time for my nap. - Bob Hope I never drink water because of the disgusting things that fish do in it. - W. C. Fields We could certainly slow the aging process down if it had to work its way through Congress - Will Rogers Don't worry about avoiding temptation. As you grow older, it will avoid you. - Winston Churchill Maybe it's true that life begins at fifty .. But everything else starts to wear out, fall out, or spread out. - Phyllis Diller By the time a man is wise enough to watch his step, he's too old to go anywhere - Billy Crystal
AND
THAN’S HOW THE
FIGHT STARTED...
I took my wife to a restaurant. The waiter, for some reason, took my order first. 'I'll have the strip steak, medium rare, please.' He said, 'Aren't you worried about the mad cow?' 'Nah, she can order for herself.' And that's how the fight started... • My wife and I were sitting at a table at my high school reunion, and I kept staring at a drunken lady swigging her drink as she sat alone at a nearby table. My wife asked, 'Do you know her?' 'Yes,' I sighed, 'She's my old girlfriend. I understand she took to drinking right after we split up those many years ago, and I hear she hasn't been sober since.' 'My God!' says my wife. 'Who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?' And that's how the fight started.....
THE THEORY OF VICTIMOLOGY If a man cuts his finger completely off while slicing salami at work, he blames the restaurant. If you smoke three packs a day for 40 years and die of lung cancer, your family blames the tobacco company. If your neighbor crashes into a tree while driving home drunk, he blames the bartender. If your grandchildren are brats without manners, you blame television. If your friend is shot by a deranged madman, you blame the gun manufacturer. And if a crazed person breaks into the cockpit and tries to kill the pilot at 35,000 feet, and the passengers kill him instead, the mother of the crazed deceased blames the airline. I must have lived too long to understand the world as it is anymore. So, if I die while my old, wrinkled butt is parked in front of this computer, I want all of you to blame Bill Gates.
WHERE DID THE WHITE MAN GO WRONG? Indian Chief 'Two Eagles' was asked by a government official, 'You have observed white man for 90 years. You've seen his wars and his technological advances. You've seen his progress, and the damage he's done.' The Chief nodded in agreement. The official continued, 'Considering all these events, in your opinion, where did white man go wrong?' The Chief stared at the government official for over a minute and then calmly replied. 'When white man find land, Indians ran it, no taxes, no debt, plenty buffalo, plenty beaver, clean water. Women did all the work, Medicine man free. Indian man spend all day hunting and fishing; all night making whoopee.' Then the chief leaned back and smiled. 'Only white man dumb enough to think he could improve system like that.'
DREAMS After she woke up, a woman told her husband, "I just dreamed that you gave me a pearl necklace. What do you think it means?" "You'll know tonight." he said. That evening, the man came home with a small package. Delighted, she opened it to find a book entitled "The Meaning of Dreams"

THE SPECIAL GROCERY LIST A poorly dressed lady with a look of defeat on her face, walked into a grocery store. She approached the owner of the store in a most humble manner and asked if he would let her charge a few groceries. She softly explained that her husband was very ill and unable to work, they had seven children and they needed food. John Longhouse, the grocer, scoffed at her and requested that she leave his store at once. Visualizing the family needs, she said: 'Please, sir! I will bring you the money just as soon as I can.' John told her he could not give her credit, since she did not have a charge account at his store. Standing beside the counter was a customer who overheard the conversation between the two. The customer walked forward and told the grocer that he would stand good for whatever she needed for her family. The grocer said in a very reluctant voice, 'Do you have a grocery list?' Louise replied, 'Yes sir.' 'O.K.' he said, 'put your grocery list on the scales and whatever your grocery list weighs, I will give you that amount in groceries.' Louise hesitated a moment with a bowed head, then she reached into her purse and took out a piece of paper and scribbled something on it. She then laid the piece of paper on the scale carefully with her head still bowed. The eyes of the grocer and the customer showed amazement when the scales went down and stayed down. The grocer, staring at the scales, turned slowly to the customer and said begrudgingly, 'I can't believe it.' The customer smiled and the grocer started putting the groceries on the other side of the scales. The scale did not balance so he continued to put more and more groceries on them until the scales would hold no more. The grocer stood there in utter disgust. Finally, he grabbed the piece of paper from the scales and looked at it with greater amazement. It was not a grocery list, it was a prayer, which said: 'Dear Lord, you know my needs and I am leaving this in your hands.' The grocer gave her the groceries that he had gathered and stood in stunned silence. Louise thanked him and left the store. The other customer handed a fifty-dollar bill to the grocer and said; 'It was worth every penny of it. Only God Knows how much a prayer weighs.'

HUNTING
Backstreet Buzz Coffee House 234 SW Market St. Reidsville, NC 27320 336-348-2899 Food, Music, Art, and Fun
A couple of southern hunters are out in the woods when one of them falls to the ground. He doesn’t seem to be breathing, his eyes are rolled back in his head. The other guy whips out his cell phone and calls 911. He gasps to the operator, “My friend is dead! What can i do?” The operator, in a calm soothing voice says “Just take it easy. I can help.” “First, lets make sure he is dead.” There is a silence, then a shot is heard. The guy’s voice comes back and says, “OK, Now What?”

The 1st Annual Ladies Night Out took place on Friday, May 8th from 6:00pm-9:00pm in the Olde Leaksville Shopping District. By all measurements, it was a great success. Ladies starting lining up at 5:30pm to be one of the first 100 attendees who received a special tote bag. They were gone in 13 minutes. The weather was perfect, something hundreds of area women took advantage of by attending the event. “It was one of my best nights ever,” stated Ella Mc Bride, owner of Riverhouse Gift and Gourmet. “It was great to see my regular and new customers, as well as seeing the downtown merchants pull together for a great first annual event.” This sentiment was echoed by Mel Hall, co-owner of The Front Porch. “People were so thrilled to attend such an event. We were pleased with the attendance and had a fabulous time,” remarked Hall. “We are so grateful to have local citizens who support our businesses,” she added.
A GREAT SUCCESS!
Shopping District was one remark by a woman who stated, “ I did not know all of these stores were down here.” Peggy and the other downtown merchants remind all Eden and Rockingham County citizens that by the end of May, four new businesses will have moved to this downtown district. If you did not make it to Ladies Night Out, stop by and see what drew hundreds of women to this event. Special thanks go to all participating merchants, City of Eden Coordinator of Special Events, Cindy Adams, Peggy Good and Steve Chatham who created the event directory.

Many attendees expressed interest in purchasing the “Ladies Night Out” T-shirts, which will be available for sale at the next event. Ladies Night Out was patterned after a similar successful event in Hillsborough, NC. Most pleasing to Peggy Good, President of the Olde Leaksville

leadership in college organizations, and community service. Their names appear in a book and they are eligible to apply for Who’s Who scholarships. This year, RCC Stephen Castle, Jamie Coleman, Ambrose Evans, IV, Rachel Singleton, and Stephanie Vanderpool were chosen for inclusion in Who’s Who for 2009. They were honored at the RCC Student Awards Day held April 29 in the Advanced Technologies auditorium. “The students selected for this honor certainly characterize the 'well-roundedness' that is the hallmark of Who's Who,” said Dr. Robert Lowdermilk, vice president for student development. “These students have performed academically at the level of “B” or higher, and are known for their positive contribution to other persons and organizations
in the local community as well as on our campus. Their potential for future leadership is evident, as is the likelihood that they will continue to have a well-rounded life.”

Relay for Life is here and it's for you! Relay 2009 will be held at Eden's Freedom Park on May 15 - 16. It is a night of fun and fellowship for the entire community and a major fundraising event for the American Cancer Society . Cancer affects everyone. One in three people will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime. Most others are touched by cancer through a friend or loved one. Relay brings together those battling cancer, those remembering loved ones lost and those wanting to fight back. The American Cancer Society has had great success in fighting back! It's mission is to fight cancer through research, education, advocacy and service. Since 1984, when Relay for Life began, many research projects have been funded by dollars raised at Relay. Many drugs in use today ( ie. Taxol,Herceptin, Gleevec) were discovered by American Cancer Society reseachers. Many tests and procedures (ie. Pap tests, bone marrow transplants ) are saving lives today because people like us helped fund research projects. Relay for Life is an overnight event because cancer never sleeps and,for one night , neither do we. While we're not sleeping, plenty of food, fun and activities will fill the hours . Please join us for all or part of the festivities. Here's what will be happening: Schedule of Events Survivors Lap - 6:00 pm - survivors walk a lap around the track accompanied by music and the applause of spectators. Each survivor will get a rose donated by Bob Adams Florist of Reidsville.
