There is always a reason, season, time and place for all things we do in life. In each moment we should look for the things that bring laughter to our lips and joy into our hearts. I especially love being able to be outdoors and feeling the warmth of the sun on my skin. What do you love about Spring? What makes you happy today about being alive? Remember that no matter

their “Let’s talk about…” music video. Fast forward to 2019, your bike shorts will be as outer wear but this time paired with a boxy blazer.

your inner spirit animal, there is no better way to show a bit of grit or an edge to your outfit by throwing some Leopard or snake print in the mix. We all know the leopard never changes it’s spots but for 2019 animal print is not limited to the traditional black and shades of brown. When you choose animal print go for striking designs with bold and bright colours. I would refrain from all over leopard print, if one has a timid fashion sense. For the brave and fashion forward you may wear animal print all over including accessories, however the cardinal rule is to vary Animal Print print size.

Marigold Yellow 2019 TREND
t feels somewhat strange to define years in terms of colours. But when they’re as pervasive as yellow has proven to be, it’s hard not to. New York’s most recent spring/summer fashion week cemented yellow as a 2019 colour trend; marigold yellow appeared in Brandon Maxwell’s collection, Carolina Herrera’s collection and Oscar de la Renta’s collection—not to mention, the sidewalks outside the runways, too. In other words, this is marigold yellow’s world now, and we’re just living in it. The colour is a bold one. Edgars Club @ 5 years

Leather 2019 TREND
eather for spring? Yes, you read that right. Though seasonally unexpected, the slick material was all over the SS19 runways in a host of forms: real and faux; one-pieces, separates and outerwear; and in a range of colours. In 2019, designers are reimagining how to wear the wardrobe mainstay. Perhaps Balenciaga’s slick, Matrix-inspired looks are your vibe? Or Bottega Veneta’s full-on ‘80s sportswear (complete with new must-have item, leather Bermuda shorts)? At Burberry, creative director Riccardo Tisci stuck to the brand’s heritage roots, offering leather iterations of ladylike A-line skirts and classic trench coats, while Marc Jacobs, Miu Miu, Acne Studios and Fendi lightened things up, sending leather looks in bright yellows, mint greens and warm neutrals down the runway. Checkerboard 2019 TREND C
heck(s), please. It’s the print that carries a different meaning depending on the person. Spent your summers playing chess? Well, here’s your portable, wearable chess board for spontaneous showdowns. Or does the checkerboard evoke triumphant memories of the finish lines you’ve successfully crossed in life? Whatever the meaning may be, block out a square in your spring wardrobe for anything with the print, because this is the trend to shop this spring and summer.

2019 TREND I
Fishermans Catch Dress t is rare that we see such a specific thing become a trend, but it seems as though on the beaches next summer we are going to see a lot of this particular dress. The fisherman’s catch dress, as we’re calling it, is also part of the fishnet trend, but it has a few very specific elements that make it one of the summer 2019 fashion trends all on its own. This dress, as seen on the runways of Altuzarra, Salvatore Ferragamo, J.W. Anderson, Sonia Rykiel and Ports 1961, consistently has the same look. It is a long dress that ends somewhere between the knee and ankle, with a straight silhouette that sits close to the body.

he beauty of a blue suit is that it’s versatile. Not only does this 71 mean that you can wear it for countless occasions, but it also means that you can match it with a broad range of shirts. Of course, certain styles will always look better than others. In particular, five key shirts are a cut above the rest. Be sure to keep them on hand in your wardrobe to ensure your blue suit always makes you look stylish. If you’re unsure what shirt to wear with your blue suit, white is a fail-safe option. The combination is so simple that anyone can pull it off. The clean and crisp shade of white is classic and looks seriously stylish when paired with cool, blue tones. September 2019

BLOTTING PAPER On days when you can’t be bothered with powder, or when you simply forget to pack the shine-wicking setting product, blotting paper is your best bet. Unlike toilet paper or even tissue, blotting papers are made out of an extra-absorbent material that generally includes ingredients such as rice, cotton, and even flax seed. Much like powder or any other oil-sopping product on the market, blotting sheets work their magic by soaking up excess sebum on the skin, subsequently making it look and feel more matte. If you don’t want your complexion to be completely shine-free, they’ve still got you covered,.

You Will Need Cotton ball,Vinegar Lemon Juice Soaking the nails in warm water for 1015 minutes before removing the nail polish can help to speed up the process. Mix equal parts of lemon juice and vinegar. Stir the mixture, soak a cotton ball in it, press it onto your fingernails, and hold it for 10-20 seconds. This causes the nail enamel to dissolve. Then use the cotton ball to wipe the polish off. It might take a little longer to remove the nail paint if there are several coats.

How to Build a Skin Care Routine We all know the feeling: You have too many clothes to even fit in your closet, yet you never have anything to wear.

G
reat skin is not simply a matter of DNA — your daily habits, in fact, have a big impact on what you see in the mirror. But depending on which product reviews you read or doctors you consult, there is a dizzying number of opinions on everything from how to moisturize to how to protect yourself from UV
rays. Ultimately, caring for your skin is simply personal. Here’s what you should keep in mind to sort through all the noise.
THREE MAIN STEPS
Think of your skin-care routine as consisting of three main steps: Cleansing — Washing your face.
*
Edgars Club @ 5 years
* *
Toning — Balancing the skin. Moisturizing — Hydrating and softening the skin. The goal of any skin-care routine is to tune up your complexion so it’s functioning at its best, and also troubleshoot or target any areas you want to work on. Beauty routines are an opportunity to notice changes within yourself. As your skin needs shifts with age, so will your products. Still, she adds, “it’s not about creating perfection.” Allow these three steps to become your daily ritual that fortifies your skin and grounds your day.
GIVE IT TIME
The science behind skin-care products has come a long way but there’s still no such thing as an instant fix — you need time to reap the benefits, says a dermatologist. Results are only seen through consistent use, she explains. Generally, aim to use a product over at least six weeks, once or twice daily, to notice a Edgars Club @ 5 years
look smart beauty difference. Tip: With any skin-care product, apply in order of consistency — from thinnest to thickest. For example, cleanser, toner (if you use it), serum, and then moisturizer.
CLEANSING
Washing your face is the most basic and essential step of any routine. Our skin comes in contact with environmental pollutants, dirt and other factors each day that should be gently removed. Wash twice a day, morning and night, to avoid clogged pores, dullness and acne. Find your facial Cleanser The right formula cleanses your skin without stripping essential, healthy oils. Take it easy with exfoliating scrubs (use once a week) and avoid those with crushed walnut shells or abrasive ingredients.
TONING
How to use a toner For many, the word “toner” brings to mind stinging astringents from the ’80s. “The original was an alcohol-based product
that was used to dry up oily skin and remove any leftover dirt following cleansing. Today’s formulas, however, have evolved. Think of them as supplements — these thin liquids deliver an extra shot of nutrients, helping the other products in your regimen absorb better, while still balancing your complexion. Most experts say, consider toner to be optional: “It can be a good way to add in specific ingredients that you may not have in your other products or add another layer of skinreplenishment.” What is a toner? “Toners should be done after cleansing and before putting on anything else,”. The traditional application method is to saturate a cotton pad and pass it over your face. “You end up losing a lot of product.” Tip: “Applying toner with clean hands is the most efficient. Just pour a few drops in your palm, then swipe it on.” Or if you prefer, you can pull apart a cotton pad “so it’s not so thick before putting toner on it,” dermatology advises. September 2019

Most formulas can be used morning and night, but you might want to use those with exfoliating acids only at night or every other day.
TREATING WITH SERUMS
82
Simply put, serums are powerful skin allies. Filled with concentrated doses of active ingredients, these elixirs can mitigate a number of issues, from dark spots to wrinkles. “Even if you don’t have any specific issues, everyone still needs a general antioxidant serum in the morning to protect from daily aggressors,” Mattioli says. While there are “limitless options” for ingredients, dermatologist single out their hardworking favorites.
HELPFUL HINTS AND POINTERS
If you have multiple concerns, you might want to use multiple formulas. “It is recommended to treat different areas with different products. “Maybe you’ll use a vitamin C serum all over but then dab on [another] for hyper pigmentation on club
September 2019
just a few spots.” Just run any combination by your dermatologist to avoid any potential reactions. To save time, don’t try mixing a serum into your moisturizer. This “lessens the ability of the serum to absorb effectively. “Products should be applied one by one.” Not all serums are applied with the same frequency. This varies with the ingredients, some dermatologist prefer antioxidants in the morning because they give you additional protection from the environment, and most of us don’t use enough sunscreen as is. Yet certain ingredients are best when slathered on at night. For example: Retinols are not sunstable and will degrade if applied in daytime. Bottom line: Read the label instructions carefully.
MOISTURIZING
The most basic function of a moisturizer is to hydrate and soften the skin. Essentially, moisturizers assist in
preventing water loss through the outer layers of skin. “They can also complement the naturally found protective oils and other building blocks within the skin, such as ceramides.” This is one product that doctors recommend using year-round, for all skin types. “Skin naturally loses the ability to retain moisture as we age,” Dr. Nazarian insists, “and daily activities, such as washing, can strip natural hydrators from the surface.”
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A DAY AND NIGHT CREAM
Creams you apply in the morning are equipped to protect your skin from the environmental aggressors you’ll face when you leave the house—many contain antioxidants to minimize pollutionbased free radicals and sunscreen to shield you from ultraviolet radiation. They typically have a lightweight consistency. Night creams, on the other hand, focus on repairing any damage you Edgars Club @ 5 years
might have picked up with ingredients like retinol to speed cellular turnover and counteract dark spots. These creams also replenish moisture levels, which naturally dip in the evening, with emollients that often create a rich, thick texture.
EYE CREAMS, EXPLAINED
Can you survive without an eye cream? Absolutely. But, if you have specific concerns — like hyperpigmentation, dryness or puffiness — you might want to try one. The skin around the eyes is quite thin and delicate, and more likely to react to irritating ingredients than other areas.
Edgars Club @ 5 years
“Therefore, dermatologists typically recommend an eye cream that considers the potential sensitivity and has more tolerable concentrations of active ingredients.” For undereye bags and inflammation, caffeine, peptides and hyaluronic acid can be soothing. “Dark circles can be due to visible veins or actual discoloration common in darker skin tones. “Look for brightening ingredients like vitamin C, kojic acid and niacinamide.” Insider tip: Steer clear of strong retinols (which can sting and create redness) and fragrance, to avoid any eye irritation.
PROTECT WITH SUNSCREEN
look smart beauty
All of the experts we consulted unanimously agreed on one thing: that sunscreen is, hands down, the most crucial skin-care product. It’s “of utmost importance as part of your year-round regimen,” Dr. Charles points out. “Daily and consistent sunscreen use helps to prevent the development of fine lines and wrinkles, textural imperfections, and changes in the appearance of pores over time. More importantly, daily sunscreen use can help to prevent the formation of certain skin cancers.” To make it easy to remember, experts recommend using a daily moisturizer with a built-in broad spectrum SPF of at least 30.

ESSENTIAL WORKING OUT ON YOUR PERIOD
Y
our period and all that comes along with it is enough to make you want to ditch the gym and stay in bed with a hot compress and a bag of salt-and-vinegar chips. But that bag of chips isn’t doing that belly bloat any favors—while a good sweat sesh can. Here’s what you need to know about working out on your period.
none—especially when you’ve committed to working out on your period—but if you’re looking to get the most sweat-equity for your efforts, then make this workout a high-intensity one. “Higher-intensity exercise can release more endorphins, which are the feel-good chemicals released in our brains when we exercise,” says an obgyn.
Working Out on Your Period? What Type of Exercise You Do Matters Don’t get us wrong, you earn yourself a fist-bump just for getting your butt to the gym. Any exercise is better than

muscle contractions, pain, and fever. So the more endorphins you release, the less period pain you feel. (You’ll also score these eight major benefits of HIIT trainingat the same time.) Another reason to go for box jumps over yoga? Sex hormones. Progesterone and estrogen levels are actually at their lowest point during menstruation and that means your body is able to access carbohydrates and glycogen more easily than they can when estrogen is at an alltime high (the middle of your cycle). That means the fuel your body needs to power through an intense set is more readily available, and you can push harder to get the most out of short bursts of fast-paced movements.

store more heat without exhausting your central nervous system. What that means for you: Those sprint intervals are going to feel easier than they did mid-cycle.
Cardio Is Better Than Strength Training If your goal is to alleviate PMS symptoms, then the week of your period is when you should focus more on the treadmill and less on the barbell. Research showsthat there’s a direct correlation between aerobic capacity and the severity of PMS symptoms: When your aerobic exercise goes up, the PMS symptoms go down. But when the scientists looked to see if the same thing happened with anaerobic power—so, strength training—they found that there was no significant connection between the two variables.
Workout Out On Your Period Won’t Lighten Your Flow The first few days, when your period is usually the heaviest, is when you’re probably least likely to book a class. But if that’s part of your regular routine, then it could pay off to go anyway. Regular, moderate exercise could reduce your flow each month, making it a solid preventative method. That’s because “estrogen is decreased when body fat is decreased, and estrogen stimulates growth of the uterus lining [that you shed when you have your period]. Translation: Regular exercise (plus a healthy diet) can mean less body fat, which means less estrogen and a lighter menstrual flow. Unfortunately, that class won’t have an immediate impact on your flow. Once the cycle starts, it’s going to be what it is. Since your uterus lining has already been thickened throughout the month, by the time you get your period it’s simply in the process of shedding it because you’re not pregnant. So working out on your period won’t change how heavy things are flowing right now.
Not to mention that your body temperature is actually lower when you’re on your period, thanks to the drop in hormones. This increases the amount of time it takes your body to tire, and you can
But It Can Help With Other Symptoms Working out on your period can help with other symptoms, though, like that god-awful belly bloat. As you sweat during exercise, your body is

shedding water, which may relieve some bloating. “There have [also] been studies that connect a higher level of overall physical fitness with fewer PMS symptoms.” Case in point: Research published in the Crescent Journal of Medical and Biological Sciences shows that if you work out three times a week, specifically making time for moves that get your heart rate up, then symptoms like headache, fatigue, and breast pain can be lessened.

You’re Not More Likely to Get Injured Yes, it’s a good idea to squeeze in a quality HIIT session when working out on your period. And no, there is no reason to worry about an increased risk of injury. Adjusting your activity while you have your period is really a myth. “Everything is fair game, unless you bleed very heavily and become anemic. Then you might feel more fatigued,” so you may not be able to go as hard as you normally do. Research backs her up: While scientists have found that women are more likely to get ACL injuries (The ACL is tissue that connects the thighbone to the shinbone, at the knee. Most ACL injuries occur during certain sports such as basketball, football, skiing and tennis.Symptoms include knee swelling, instability and pain.)at certain points of their cycle, that risk increases during the preovulatory phase, which is when hormones start being produced again, the ovaries are stimulated, and an ovarian follicle starts to mature. That typically occurs from days 9 to 14 of a 28-day cycle, so yeah, it’s after you get club
September 2019
your period (the first day of your period is considered day one of your menstrual cycle). Not to mention that, even though a woman’s risk of injury is higher, research also shows that neuromuscular training can cut that risk in half. Researchers discovered that the risk increases because there’s a difference in the way women’s knees move during menstruation compared to ovulation. But Timothy E. Hewett, Ph.D. (who’s been studying the effect of the menstrual cycle on injury for more than 15 years), found that when athletes were taught how to reduce load on their knees and ankles and build up strength and coordination, the rate of ACL injury, ankle injury, and knee-cap pain fell by 50 to 60 percent. So simply strengthening and learning how to properly move your body while you work out can help—period or not. In other words, have no fear and keep on busting reps like your badass self. And Your Performance Will Still Rock When Working Out on Your Period Unless you have extremely heavy bleeding, it’s not likely that your performance will be impacted. After surveying 241 elite athletes about how their menstrual cycle affected their performance, researchers noted that about 62 percent of them thought their workout was just as good when they had their periods compared to when they didn’t. (Plus, 63 percent of them said their pain decreased during training and competition as opposed to recovery time.) And lest you think they’re simply better at powering through because they’re elite-level, know Edgars Club @ 5 years

250g Sun dried tomato strips in oil (reserve 2 tablespoons of oil and drain the rest) 3 level tablespoons flour 2 cups chicken broth 3 cups milk OR light cream* or half and half, divided 2 teaspoons dried Italian herbs 10 ounces (300g) elbow macaroni uncooked (3 cups!) 3 cups baby spinach leaves 1 cup fresh grated Parmesan cheese 3/4 cup mozzarella cheese shredded 1/2 cup grated cheese Cheddar 2 tablespoons fresh parsley chopped INSTRUCTIONS Season chicken with salt, pepper, paprika, dried parsley and 2 teaspoons of the oil. Heat the remaining oil in a large (30cm or 12-inch) pot or pan over medium-high heat. Add the chicken and sear on both sides until golden brown, cooked through and no longer pink in the middle. Transfer chicken to a warm plate, tent with foil and set aside. To the same pan, add the butter and fry the onion and garlic until the onion becomes transparent, stirring occasionally (about 2 minutes). Pour in the white wine and allow to simmer for 5 minutes, or until beginning to reduce down. Add the sun dried tomatoes with 2 tablespoons of the sun dried tomato oil from the jar and cook for 1-2 minutes to release as much flavour as possible. and half), herbs, salt and pepper, and bring to a very low simmer (lower the heat if you need to). Add the dry macaroni and stir occasionally as it comes to a simmer. Reduce heat down to medium low and stir regularly while it cooks (for about 9 - 10 minutes), or until the sauce thickens and the macaroni is just cooked (al dente: tender but still firm). Add the spinach and stir through until wilted.
Take the pot off the stove and stir all of the cheese in quickly. Adjust salt and pepper to taste. If the sauce it too thick, add the remaining 1/2 cup milk (or cream) in 1/4 cup increments, until reaching desired thickness. Keep in mind the sauce will continue to thicken as it cools. Slice the chicken into strips and stir through the pasta (pour in any juices left from the chicken). Sprinkle with parsley, and stir through. Serve immediately!
NOTES *Full fat milk is preferred for maximum flavour, but low fat milk is ok. You can also use a light cream, heavy cream or evaporated milk. **For added cream flavour, add in 1/2 cup light cream (or heavy cream if you wish), right before right before adding in the spinach. OUT OF CONTROL STRESS “Hair loss is more likely to be the product of really long sustained periods of high levels of stress,” Pike says. Typically one isolated stressful situation isn’t going to make your hair start falling out. But experiencing a life-altering event, like a death of a loved one or a huge career change, can actually cause your hair to stop growing temporarily as your body dedicates its efforts to surviving said event. When it starts growing again, the hairs that were stalled in the middle of growing get shed all at once, so you may find yourself combing out what seems like handfuls at a time. Edgars Club @ 5 years

ttractive, hardwearing and easy to maintain, floor tiles are a good investment and a practical choice for your rooms. Choose the best with our guide. Choosing floor tiles? A great flooring choice for hallways, kitchen diners, bathrooms, contemporary living spaces and even outdoors, floor tiles come in ever more varied design choices. Pick from natural stone, such as terracotta, limestone or marble, or from manmade materials, such as porcelain, ceramic or concrete. Find out everything you need to know about floor tile materials, installing floor tiles, and tips for floor tile maintenance.

tiles typically come in natural, honed or polished finishes. Natural surfaces tend to be matt with texture and pitting; honed tiles are smooth but matt; polished tiles have a smooth sheen. colours, and if sealed and polished, resists scratching. However, it can crack. Ideal for kitchens, living and hallways. Marble is porous so choose honed or polished finishes, particularly in a kitchen. Available in a range of colours, it’s a good choice for bathrooms. Limestone comes in earthy shades and both textured and polished finishes. It can stain and scratch, so avoid putting it in high traffic areas, such as kitchens. Slate is durable and comes in a range of dark, earthy shades. Its surface is naturally textured, but honed, smooth finishes are available. A good option for kitchens, bathrooms and living rooms. Travertine is soft and porous with a natural pitted surface, although honed and polished tiles are available. It can scratch and stain, so reseal regularly, and put in bathrooms rather than kitchens.
Quartz tiles, made from a composite of resin, quartz, sand, colour pigment and mirror flecks, come highly polished. Hardwearing and perfect for contemporary kitchens and bathrooms. Glass tiles offer a tough, durable, easy to clean floor for bathrooms. Glass is prone to scratches, however, and will break if something heavy is dropped on it. Porcelain tiles are dense, smooth and impermeable, making them suitable for all rooms, including the garden. They can mimic the look of wood, encaustic patterns, natural stones and even concrete. Ceramic tiles, generally more affordable than other tiles, come in a wide choice of designs. A little more prone to chipping and wear than porcelain tiles, they are hardwearing and will work for most rooms.

FITTING FLOOR TILES Installing tiles is a job that even beginners to DIY can tackle. Simply start by finding the centre of the room and laying out the first four tiles with spacers around that point. Then, lay out a few more tiles in each direction to ensure you don’t end up with any awkward, thin slivers of tile at the edges of the room. This done, you can apply adhesive in small sections to keep it from drying out. The difficulty comes in the cutting, with some materials trickier to tackle than others: porcelain is harder to cut than ceramic, and natural stone, in particular thicker tiles, is more heavy-going than porcelain. So it’s important to invest in tile cutting tools appropriate to the

Terracotta tiles, like quarry, are made from a mixture of clays, but fired at a lower temperature for a more rustic look. Available in a range of earthy colours, they need sealing. Encaustic tiles are ceramic tiles, with the design not a product of the glaze but of different colour clays. Typically used in hallways, they need regular sealing. material. And, if you’ve chosen expensive tiles, we’d recommend you call in a professional.
INSTALLING UNDERFLOOR HEATING UNDER FLOOR TILES Tiles
heat up quickly and retain heat well, making underfloor heating an efficient option. Tile thickness has an impact on the heat-up time, with a thicker tile taking slightly longer to warm-up than a thinner one. Use a flexible adhesive and grout to allow for normal thermal movement. The finish you get is only as good as your subfloor, which must be clean, flat and movement-free before you start laying the tiles. Larger format tiles need the subfloor to be absolutely perfect to lay flat; smaller tiles will give you a little more leeway with minor 110 imperfections.
Bold colours or monochromes in graphic designs are a popular look for the year ahead, as are wood-effect tiles in a parquet layout. Want to stretch space visually? Laying tiles diagonally will trick the eye into seeing the room as larger than it really is. Also, consider how the layout of the tiles on your floor might contrast with or complement that of your wall tiles.
MAINTAINING AND CLEANING FLOOR TILES Vacuuming or sweeping
regularly will help keep your tiles scratch-free, while cleaning up spills quickly will help avoid staining. Manmade tiles can usually just be mopped with a mild detergent for floor tiles, but use warm water only for natural stone to avoid removing or dulling the seal, or damaging the stone’s appearance. Terracotta tiles can also be resealed to maintain their soft sheen appearance.
FLOOR TILE TRENDS Choose large
format tiles to complement a big, contemporary or industrial-style room; smaller tiles are perfect for a vintage, homely look in a more compact space. club

'O' level CHEMISTRY PERIODIC TABLE
T
he periodic table (also known as the periodic table of elements) is organized so scientists can quickly discern the properties of individual elements such as their mass, electron number, 112 112 electron configuration and their unique chemical properties. Metals reside on the left side of the table, while non-metals reside on the right. Organizing the elements to help further our understanding was first provided by Dmitri Mendeleev. GROUP 1 METALS The elements in Group 1 of the Periodic Table are called the alkali metals. They include lithium (Li), sodium (Na) and potassium (K). club
September 2019
Physical Properties • Easy to cut • Shiny when freshly cut • Low density
• Alkali metal compounds are usually colourless • The hydroxides are strong alkalis
Chemical Properties • Metals are very reactive with chemical reactivity increasing down the group. •All the metals react : :with oxygen to form oxides e.g. Li2O :with water to form hydroxides and hydrogen e.g. KOH : with halogens to form halides e.g. NaOH
Alkali metals The alkali metals are all soft metals that can be cut with a knife. They all react quickly with oxygen in air and with water. The rate of reaction increases as you go down the group in the periodic table.
Alkali Metal Compounds • All alkali metal compounds are stable, this is because the alkali metals are so reactive. • Alkali metals have to be extracted from their ores by electrolysis
GROUP 7 – THE HALOGENS Chemical Properties - All halogens form diatomic molecules, that is they go around in pairs e.g. I2 - The halogens are reactive elements, with reactivity decreasing down the group. - The larger atoms are Edgars Club @ 5 years
live smart club crammer less reactive as it is harder for them to capture an electron. - Halogen compounds are called halides. Chlorine forms chlorides, bromine forms bromide etc. DEVELOPMENT OF THE PERIODIC TABLE The list of elements was originally conceived in order of “atomic weight”. Newlands – Law of Octaves. Every eighth element seemed to be similar, rather like every eighth note in music. One example he used was Li, Na, K. Mendeleev – He made the table two-dimensional rather than a list. He arranged the elements in order of atomic weight but had the Newlands Octave elements underneath each other. The vertical columns are called groups and the horizontal rows are called periods. The term periodic refers to the fact that the properties swing to and fro like a pendulum. Some elements had not Edgars Club @ 5 years
been discovered at the time of Mendeleev writing up his table so he left gaps to indicate where elements ought to be. This was brave because a theory with gaps in it looks a bit silly unless you can explain why the gaps are there. Later chemists discovered elements to fit in the right places and they were amazed to find that the properties were very much like those Mendeleev had predicted. When the noble gases were discovered, argon was a problem because if the elements are arranged in order of atomic weight, argon and potassium should swap places. Fortunately, more detailed theories about the structure of the atom were being proposed. If these theories (using protons, neutrons and electrons) were right, it would be more sensible to arrange the elements in order of atomic number (number of protons). If this is done, the problem of argon and potassium is solved. We now know that the group number of an element tells
us the number of electrons it has in its outside shell. TRANSITION METALS The transition metals are placed in the centre of the periodic table, between groups 2 and 3. They are generally hard and dense, and less reactive than the alkali metals. Iron, copper, silver and gold are important transition metals. NOBLE GASES The elements in group 0 are called the noble gases. They belong to the right-hand column in the 113 periodic table. The noble gases are all chemically unreactive which means they are inert. noble gases: • He - helium, • Ne - neon, • Ar - argon, • Kr - krypton, • Xe - xenon, • Rn - radon The noble gases have the following properties in common: • they are non-metals they are very unreactive gases • they are colourless • they exist as single atoms (they are monatomic) September 2019

MONEY TIPS FOR TEENAGERS:
YOUR FUTURE SELF WILL THANK YOU
I
The best way to teach is through specifically designed activities for teens.
f you’re a teenager, you are in a very powerful position. Starting good money habits now will put you ahead for the rest of your life. Here are 8 money tips for teenagers. I was not good with money when I was a teenager. I spent it on stuff like clothes and eating at the mall. If I knew as a teenager even a fraction of what I club
September 2019
know now about money, I’d probably be retired. So let us help you avoid the mistakes we made with our money by giving you 8 money tips.
1
. UNDERSTAND THE POWER OF TIME You probably aren’t making a ton of money right now, but that doesn’t matter. What matters is time. And your money has a lot of it. Let’s look at an
example: Lets say at the end of your holiday job, you have $1000. You invest it at a rate of return of 5%. You don’t contribute another cent for 50 years. At the end of those 50 years, you will have $11,467.49. If you did the same but only had 30 years for that money to grow, you would just have $4,321.99 at the end of those 30 years. Of course, you will be Edgars Club @ 5 years
investing much more over those years than just that initial $1000 so imagine how fast your money will grow if you start early. Time is rarely on our side but it’s on your side now if you start now.
2
. START A MONEY SAVING HABIT How long have you been brushing your teeth? Hopefully, by the time you’re a teenager, for many years. And because you have been doing it for so long, it’s just a habit. The power of habit is almost as important as the power of time when it comes to money. A habit is just something you do automatically; you don’t have to think about it too much. If you start the habit of saving money now, that habit will always be with you. Every dollar you get, whether it’s a gift, an allowance, or pay from a job, get into the habit of saving a portion of it. Half of it would be ideal and now is the time to Edgars Club @ 5 years
start because you don’t have a lot of expenses.
downtime teen talk
The older you get, the harder it can seem to save even 10% of your money, but if you started saving much more than that at an early age, it wouldn’t seem hard to you because it’s just a habit.
3
. TRACK YOUR SPENDING This can be hard because as a teenager you might be earning money by doing things like babysitting or mowing lawns and those kinds of jobs are usually paid in cash. And cash is the hardest thing to track. There are all kinds of great money budgeting tools online, Mint, You Need A Budget, Quicken, and they’re all easier to use when you’re not dealing with cash. Cash also tends to burn a hole in our pockets, so it’s better to have it stashed away somewhere, so it’s less tempting. It’s a good idea to establish a relationship with a bank
when you’re young. In fifteen years when you want a loan to buy a house, a long track record with a bank can be helpful.
Be sure to research the various types of accounts banks offer. Some will charge fees if you don’t keep a minimum balance. You should never pay a penny in fees to a bank for any reason. Take your cash and open two accounts, a checking and a savings account. Remember, you’re saving half of every dollar you get so half goes into checking 115 and half into savings. I It’s important to always separate your money. Money that should be saved tends to disappear when it’s mixed around with money that gets spent. You can get a debit card for the checking account. You can now spend money via your debit card rather than cash so you can easily track your spending. The card will also allow you to deposit cash into your September 2019

A Happy Pocket Full of Money.

college can include the decision not to attend, or to delay attending for a few years and work full time to help pay for it. A smart decision might be attending a local college for two years and then transferring to a more expensive, prestigious school. It means applying for every grant and scholarship you are evenly remotely qualified for. A smart decision is choosing to major in something that people actually get paid to do. Lots of us would have enjoyed majoring in history or literature, but those aren’t really wellpaying fields. Taking out tens of thousands of dollars in loans for these kinds of degrees is a poor financial decision. Crippling yourself with a debt that can almost never be discharged is going to color the rest of your life for decades to come. You may have to delay things like buying a home and starting a family for years if you come out of Edgars Club @ 5 years
college with monumental debt. Overall, college is still a good decision but the days of going to the best school that will have you on loans are over.
6
. AVOID FOMO FOMO is fear of missing out. It’s easy to think everyone is having more fun than you are when you’re a teenager. And sometimes, people are having more fun than you. That’s true no matter how young or old you are. It’s important, though, to
not give up what you want most for what you want now. What you want now is to take the money you made at your summer job and go on Spring Break. What you want most is to graduate debt free. Or to retire at forty instead of 65. Or to be able to quit a job you hate because you have a big emergency fund to see you through to your next job. It might not seem like it when you’re eighteen, but all of that will be true in time.
It’s So Early
If you ask people older than you what their biggest financial regret is, a lot of them will tell you that they wished they had started getting serious about money much earlier than they did. Because doing it only gets harder the older you get. Start now so you don’t have that same regret a few decades down the road.
