Be a Hero……!!! Chihambakwe Primary in Gutu
t’s amazing how much can be achieved, if all of us had super powers. Right? But the great thing is one does not have to be a super hero to effect meaningful change in the society. It’s the seemingly ordinary acts that unleash our super powers and morph us into extraordinary Super Beings.

August 2019
Giving is one of the highest forms of being in the class of heroes and that is what keeps people going and gives the heart that special glow. Every year, Edgars runs with the Be a Hero campaign in August which is themed around the Zimbabwean Heroes holiday. A theme is identified and run with annually. For
2018, the theme was around clothing the under privileged in all the communities that we are based. With the drive to empower and make a positive impact in the communities that we operate in, Edgars team mobilised its employees’ customers to donate old clothes and those they no longer wear or outgrown for a good
Edgars Club @ 5 years

cause. This concerted initiative was a great way to pass them on to help the less fortunate. The clothes were dropped off at the 25 Edgars Stores country wide. Carousel Manufacturing the Group`s manufacturing arm was engaged to wash, mend and sort the donations before they were re distributed to the intended recipients. Each of our stores identified a local non-profit charity organization to support. Changing that narrative is what we have been trying to Edgars Club @ 5 years
do. And thus far, it’s worked, it’s successful. Rather than waiting we believe everyone can be a Hero and has the ability to transform the lives of the underprivileged. We are part of the growing wave that has embraced the ‘do-good’ mantra as part of our business plans and creating a better future is key for our business. Giving our customers a story that they can retell again and again that goes beyond their unique shopping experience in our stores is what we are all about. The story is
deeply entrenched on the premise of giving back to the community and is a reality that works in eradicating poverty. Harare A big thank you to 15 our customers and staff members who are the darlings of the Edgars philanthropy fan club. The Edgars Corporate Investment universe keeps on expanding and now includes, healthcare, education, environment, and disaster relief programs. The Edgars CSR Team.

know I live for these moments; this is what makes my blood race! These are moments that have defined how we work, LIVE and play – FASHION. These people were everyday people like you and I, who dared challenge the norms. People, who celebrated their individuality, expressed their inner deeper essence on the outer without reservations, all this despitewho was looking or their opinions. Eccentric as it was, they stepped out in confidence! We all watched in awe and these are unforgettable moments are forever etched in our psyches. This is my definition of an

ICHELLE OBAMA
Michelle Obama captured the world attention with her immaculate dress sense since President Obama’s inauguration in January 2009. At the historic inauguration ball Michelle dazzled in a stunning Jason Wu dress and consistently held her own amongst US first ladies. Her chic dress sense has earned her comparisons to the late Mrs. Jackie O. Michelle Obama will go down in history as one of the best dressed political figures in the world. Mrs. Obama has a penchant beautiful slip, shift and straplesswhich are very flattering for her toned arms, finished off with very ladylike pearls.

ICONIC FASHION HEROES Written by Marshall Malikula

August 2019
As we all know designers are never mainstream, they will stand out without even trying. In the 1920s the renowned and classic Coco Chanel birthed the “LITTLE BLACK DRESS”. Previously, black dresses were a

preserve for widows in mourning. Coco was a powerful tool in mindset change then, by debunking the myth around wearing black dresses from sad and sombre to glam!
A
UDREY HEPBURN
We all look up to movie stars and they are easily role models. It’s all very aspirational, they allow us to dream and live our fantasies on the big screen. All hail Audrey Hepburn who was unforgettable in the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s and made the LBD accessible to all women around the world. Take the Givenchy black number she wore for Audrey Hepburn this role way back then in 1961, fast forward to 2019, one can still rock this outfit and look like a million dollars. Audrey Hepburn’s style was classic and elegant, never OTT but rather tasteful.
M
ARILYN MONROE
Marilyn Monroe was the gutsy

one; she flaunted sexiness on a day-today basis and on the big screen. Sexiness was taboo back then and was not meant for exhibition – only to be expressed when behind closed doors. Marilyn Monroe boldly became a symbol of sex appeal as she stepped onto a subway grid wearing a white full circle halter neck dress. This was on the movie set of The Seven Year Itch.
J
ACKIE O
The former first Lady was known for her chic yet simple style. Mrs. Jackie Onassis popularized these raging trends from 60s and 70s – pillbox hats, tailored suits made by Chanel and one Oleg Cassini, strapless gowns, elbow length gloves, lady like pearls, chic shift dresses. If you ask me a little shift in pastel or bold colour is always a good idea.

RINCESS DI

Princess Diana was radical and changed the way we view royals in her lifetime. She was one of the biggest fashion influencers of the 80s and 90s. Her wedding gown was iconic by any standard. Besides the puff shoulders the David & Elizabeth Emanuel dress had startling 25-foot long train. Princess Di never put a foot wrong, whether dressed down on a charity mission around the world, royal appearance at a glitzy event Princess Diana club

with stars she would turn heads.
M
ADONNA
The 80s saw the rise of new fashion heroes. Madonna was quite ballsy when she wore the infamous Jean Paul Gaultier cone corset on her blonde ambition World tour. She pushed boundaries setting the tone for a new trend – underwear as outerwear.
M
ICHAEL JACKSON
Besides being the greatest performer of this century, hate him or love him plus his controversies and all. Michael Jackson influenced fashion trends big time. I speak for many kids who grew up in the 90s,we all idolized Michael Jackson and would channelMJ vibes every Civvies Day. I had a version of the zipper-bedecked red leather jacket
Michael Jackson Edgars Club @ 5 years
that Jackson wore in 1983’s “Beat it” video. The red biker quickly became iconic and widely copied. Performing at L.A.’s Dodger Stadium in 1984, the King of Pop wore an outfit that combined several of his favorite trends: abundant shine, a military-style jacket (complete with Marilyn Monroe golden epaulets), and most notably, his famous single, sequined white glove. Most of the all the tilted fedora hat, magical moonwalk moments which were simply inimitable.
T
HE FRESH PRINCE OF BEL AIR
Another great unforgettable throwback is Will Smith in the popular sitcom Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Fresh Prince was the epitome of cool. His style was eclectic and vibrant. His dress sense illustrated the fun of 90s HipHop culture which was about taking risks with fashion. It was all about an unexpected mix of baggy jeans, baggy sweat tops, basketball jerseys, baseball shirts & caps finished of with elaborate high top sneakers. Aunt Viv was also arguably the most stylish person in Bel Air, thanks to her eye catching tweed blazers and statement gold earEdgars Club @ 5 years
Fashion guidance rings.
C
ARRIE BRADSHOW
There aren’t enough positive adjectives to describe Carrie Bradshaw’ played by Sarah Jessica Parker. Carrie’s fashion sense is impeccable, risk-taking flair on Sex and the City. She constantly pushed her style to another level yet never took it to a kooky place. Carrie provided an endless amount of eye candy and insurmountable inspiration. No matter where the trend cycle takes us, it seems like Carrie Bradshaw is always an appropriate style icon. She infused her outfits with flavor and sophistication all at once, and that’s the real kicker. Also, Carrie was well versed on designer collections, so she knew how to work an entire ensemble around a novelty piece, like the Dior newspaper dress for example, or a pair of Manolo Blahniks and fur coats tastefully.

ways added their own twist with designer jewellery, bags and styling. Gossip Girl season 2 introduced us to the concept of a Hamptons white party. Serena van der Woodsmen wore the summer’s hottest accessories, an elaborate head chain and in a Grecian-inspired Oscar de la Renta dress is ostensibly the star of the show, it’s the golden girl’s up-do that keeps us coming back to this ‘fit nearly a decade later. Blair Waldorf wore a stunning Marchesa gown to her prom, proving definitively that she had more style in her pinky finger than the rest of us have in our entire bodies. So much for our Fashion Heroes. Fashion History will not go down without mentioning other these notable women and men who are also leaving an indelible mark on the way we dress; David Gandy, J Lo, David & Victoria Beckham, Pharell, Gwen Steffani, Meghan Markle, Kate Middleton and our trailblazer Bonang Matheba whose star is on the rise. club

As I sign out I would also like to pay homage to Zimbabwe’s own designers for their contribution to Fashion as you know “local is lekker” – The late Sonny Mackolisky – House of Savior Faire, Joyce Chimanya of Ngugi Vere Zuvva, Creed Katsande, Ngugi Vere, Philip of Armor Bespoke, Tapfumanei Munenge aka Coco, Danai Chapfika of House of Stone, Thembani Mubochwa, David Alford, Yvette Ndaba of Sishebo, Adby Phiri of Znzorz, Ishmael Tsakatsa, Kuda K7 and other up and coming Designers. Paperbag Pants 2019 TREND
P
aperbag trousers will be a key silhouette in 2019 because they’re comfortable, chic and seriously flattering. The super-high-waisted pants sit just above your belly button and usually come with an attached belt that pulls in the waist. The leg and hip are a more relaxed, wider shape, which makes them up there on the comfort scale. There are so many different styles and fabrics to suit any budget, from Rodarte’s wool checked paperbag trousers to Arket’s wool linen version. The key to getting the styling right is to ensure you wear a top you can tuck in, whether it’s a simple white T-shirt that’s loosely tucked or a fine cashmere knit. Edgars Club @ 5 years

hile florals are a staple, the way designers approach the print is where the real story lays. For Spring, that means big, bold, graphic and colorful from the runways of Balenciaga, Gucci and more—think Slim Aarons for the Insta-generation.Does floral print ever go out of style? Answer: No way! Nothing says Spring like blooming flowers. The easiest way to wear floral print right now is by throwing on a floral top Rock one of these with high-waisted jeans or shorts for an easy warm weather outfit that’s 2019-approved. If you are feeling bold, try incorporating floral print into the bottom half of your outfit for a 1970s feel. You can style any of these examples with your favorite basic top for a put-together floral look that is cute and trendy.

Spring Kids 2019 TREND
A
s things heat up, most kids find that their summer duds from last year no longer fit. On the quest for something special, comfortable and fun to restock my own kids’ closets-for play, pool, backyard barbecues and more.Denim is always a go to style whether it’s a denim dress for the girls or shorts for the boys. Layering pattern upon pattern is a festive way to mix things up and a smart way to dress on cooler days. Don’t know where to start? Have your child pick out a patterned piece he wants to wear: like an animal print shirt. Pull out one color from that piece and find a match with another layer. Make your third separate a neutral pattern that goes with the first two: it’s that simple!

GLOWING SKIN Forget matte, the spring/ summer 2019 beauty trends are all about glowing skin, shining healthfully with a natural gleam. This season cheekbones and foreheads were highlighted softly, but not with powder highlighters. Makeup artists preferred a touch of liquid or cream luminizer to give a more natural sheen. A dose of highlighter paired well with rosy lips and peachy cheeks is the way.

Closet Cleaning WITH LESS STRESS
We all know the feeling: You have too many clothes to even fit in your closet, yet you never have anything to wear. club
August 2019
A
nd as paradoxical as it seems, it actually makes sense -- when your closet is crowded with things that no longer fit your size or taste, the extra clutter can keep you from making the most of the clothing you do wear and enjoy. If your closet houses your high school homecoming dress and
10 variations of white T-shirts -- but only one or two work-appropriate dresses -- it might be time to give your wardrobe a major spring cleaning. Organizing your closet and finally parting with your fashion past can be challenging, even when it comes to clothing that you don’t wear or like. But Edgars Club @ 5 years
look smart beauty before you start panicking about the task ahead of you, click through the slideshow below for eight rules for stress-free spring wardrobe cleaning -- then roll up your sleeves, grab a few trash bags and get your closet ready for the new season.
Define Your Current Style Is your style classic and polished? Then it might be time to get rid of those old boho tops that you haven’t touched since college. Before you get started on a wardrobe overhaul, take some time to really think about how you define your personal style, and what type of clothes make you feel the most you. Getting a better sense of what your look is can help you figure out which pieces to get rid of and how you can build a wardrobe you’ll love. If you’re having trouble figuring out what your style is, pull out the 10 pieces you love the most from your wardrobe and analyze what they say about how you like to look. Edgars Club @ 5 years
Create ‘Give Away’ & ‘Throw Away’ Piles: The first step
when diving into springcleaning your closet is deciding what stays, what goes and what’s a “maybe.” Then, go through every item in your wardrobe -- yes, this includes shoes, jewelry and accessories -- and sort each garment into one of the three piles. When you’ve finished, put the “get-rid-of ” pile into the garbage, making sure that any gently-used clothing that’s still in good shape is sent to a charity or taken to a clothing exchange store.
Make A Shopping List As You Go Along : As you’re going
through your wardrobe, note where there are gaps and where you have too many repeats. Keep this in mind as you plan your spring shopping to make sure that you’re buying pieces you really need and will use.
Follow The ‘TwoYear Rule: Unless a
piece has sentimental value, always follow the
two-year rule: If you haven’t worn it in two years, get rid of it. It can be hard to let go of old clothing you don’t wear anymore -- you might feel guilty that you never wore that shirt that you bought impulsively, or maybe you’re clinging onto the hope that one day you’ll finally be able to rock those leopard-print pants that just never seem quite right. When it comes to spring cleaning, ruthlessness is necessary. Keep in mind that your end goal is to have a smaller closet full of things you love to wear, rather than an overstuffed wardrobe crowded with outdated trend pieces.
Be Honest. The most
important thing to keep in mind when tackling your spring closet cleaning is to be brutally honest with yourself about what you wear, what you don’t and what you wear but maybe don’t like very much. The fact that you were given something as a gift or bought it on sale doesn’t mean that it’s worth keeping. If you August 2019

don’t love it and you don’t need it, toss it! There’s no shame in getting rid of something that doesn’t add anything to your wardrobe to make room for what you do need.
Upgrade Your Closet Accessories:
80
Get rid of those mismatched wire and plastic hangers and upgrade to a set of wood or cloth hangers to give your closet an instant lift. Plus, they’ll be easier on sweaters and delicate knits than wire hangers that can pull the fabric. You may also want to consider investing in sturdy shoe racks and upgrading old laundry bags and storage boxes.
sure to display them for maximum visibility and ease.
Organize A Clothing Swap With Friends: One girl’s giveaway item is another girl’s favorite new piece for spring -- so instead of throwing away your
outdated pieces, organize a clothing swap with a group of girlfriends to trade old clothes, shoes, jewelry and accessories for something new that you’ll enjoy. A clothing swap can be a fun social activity and a great way to make it easier to part with your unwanted items.
Organize By Color Or Type: Once you’ve
sorted through everything and determined which items you’ll be getting rid of, organize the remaning clothing in your wardrobe by color or type, depending on whether aesthetics or functionality is more important to you. Now that you have a wardrobe full of only pieces you love, make club

THE SUMMER BODY WORKOUT YOU CAN DO IN 4WEEKS Your sick pack quest is not lost yet. You can still craft a Summer holiday physique, if you are willing to suffer.
P
assport – check. Sunglasses – check. A physique you’ll want to put on Instagram – ah.They say a summer body is built in winter. But hitting the sand seemed a long time away back when mince pies were on the table. Now you’re a few weeks away from full blown summer, and those extra helpings of butter are still hanging around your waist. However, all’s not lost. Follow these club
August 2019
rules, and after four weeks of sweat, discipline and calloused hands, you’ll have burnt off extra hanging fat to be left with a summer body that proves you know precisely which way the beach is.
DON’T STARVE YOURSELF A crash
diet won’t tighten your wobbling gut. “If you restrict calories too much, your body goes into shock mode,” says Leo, a personal trainer who firms up at a Harare gym. “That means anything you eat, it clings onto.” Cut to 1,000 calories a day, and that summer body you’re after thinks you’re starving, so stores food rather than burning it as fuel. Which Edgars Club @ 5 years
means that gut’s going nowhere. Instead, aim for around 2,000 calories a day, with every meal based around lean protein – think chicken breast or fish fillets, rather than protein powders – and vegetables. If it goes in the microwave, it doesn’t go in you. “You should have 40 per cent of your energy from protein, 30 per cent from carbs and 30 per cent from fat,” says Leo. You’ll still be at a fat-burning calorie deficit, but there’ll be enough going in to keep your engines stoked. EAT TO THE CLOCK What your summer body does with what you put into it is dictated by hormones. Insulin, which spikes when you eat carbs, is particularly bad at turning food into fat – especially if you have a particularly sugary diet. Besides cutting out processed food and booze – it’s just four weeks, remember – you need to time when you eat what to optimise how your body handles what you put in. Insulin levels are stunted in the morning, so Leo advises avoiding carbs until dinner – ideally after a workout – which sends the hormone soaring and directs nutrients into now hungry muscles, not your love handles. “You need to earn your carbs,” he says. Which means that on gym days, pair your chicken with a side of sweet potato or brown rice. MO’ MUSCLE, LESS PROBLEMS Because you can’t live in the gym, the best way to burn fat is to increase your basal metabolic rate – the amount of energy your summer body needs simply to function. Muscle is active, which Edgars Club @ 5 years
shop smart fitness
means it burns calories even when you’re not moving. Ergo the more you have, the better your body is at burning fat. Even when you’re sat at your desk. Instead of running or cardio, Leo recommends a total-body dumbbell session twice a week, which builds beach-ready definition and strips away fat. But that doesn’t mean a quick bicep blast. “The more joints you can move, the more muscle fibres your recruit and the more energy you burn,” he says. That means moves like deadlifts, rows and pull-ups, which exponentially increase your calorie count by hitting your body’s biggest muscle groups. And yes, pump your guns. THE FOUR-WEEK SUMMER BODY WORKOUT: Put simply, this is going to suck. But this month of hell buys that week in heaven. The summer body workout regime is split between heavy metal and high-intensity metabolism-boosting exercises. Perform the weights workout twice a week, with at least two days between each session, and the same for the circuit workout. For both, the harder you work, the better the results. Remember, you’re training against the clock.
THE HEAVY METAL WORKOUT DEADLIFTS: What: Perform four sets of five reps, with 60 seconds rest in between How: Stand with a barbell on the floor, in front of your shins. Crouch down and grab the bar with both hands, keeping your weight on your heels. Drive up to standing, pause, then lower. August 2019

BENCH PRESS: What: Perform four sets of 10 reps, with 60 seconds rest in between How: Lie down on the bench press and grab the bar with a shoulder-width grip. Lower it, squeezing your shoulder blades together, until the bar brushes your nipples. Drive it up using your chest – make sure you don’t roll your shoulders forward. Pause, then repeat.
84
BULGARIAN SPLIT SQUAT: What: Perform four sets of 10 reps each leg, with 60 seconds rest in between How: Stand with a barbell on your shoulders, with your back to a bench. Step back with your right foot so your laces are resting on the bench. Squat down with your left leg until your back knee almost touches the floor, then drive back up through your heel. After all the reps, swap legs. That’s one set. CABLE ROWS: What: Perform four sets of 10 reps, with 60 seconds rest in between How: The cable machine is known for facilitating some of the best shoulder exercises inside the iron paradise. Sit with the handles in front of you, arms straight. Pull the weight back, keeping your shoulders down and squeezing your shoulder blades together. Pause and return. SINGLE-ARM KETTLEBELL CLEAN AND PRESS: What: Perform four sets of 10 reps each side, with 60 seconds rest in between How: Stand with feet shoulder-width club

apart and a heavy kettle-bell on the floor, between your legs. Squat down and grab the handle with your right hand. Drive your hips forward and pull the weight up and over your head. Pause, then slowly lower and repeat. After all your reps, switch arms. 30 Minute Cardio At 145bpm “Do your cardio after your weights workout,” says Leo. Shifting tin will have exhausted the carb stores in your muscles, so your body needs to burn fat for fuel. Whether you run, cycle or row, work at a pace that’s challenging but doesn’t leave you gasping for breath. THE FAT-BURNING HIGH-INTENSITY CIRCUIT: The name of today’s game is intensity. Short bursts of each exercise mean you can work at maximum effort, then catch your breath before tackling the next move. Spiking your heart rate means more calorie burn now, and also the 36 hours after you leave the gym. Consider that bonus time in your fourweek window. Perform 30 seconds of each exercise, take 15 seconds rest, then move onto the next. After completing the Hollow Body, go back to the burpees. Complete five rounds total, then tackle the sprints. BURPEES: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Squat down then kick your legs back into a press-up position. Jump your feet forward into a squat, jump as high as possible, then land and sink straight back into a squat. Repeat until you want to throw up. Edgars Club @ 5 years

Garlic: The sulfur in garlic activates liver enzymes that cleanse the body, and selenium and allicin also support the liver detox.

Using dimmable task lighting is also an excellent option because you can increase the light when making preparations for cooking and reduce the light in the evening for a proper mood setting. Lights are very important parts of the kitchen and they actually help in changing the entire look of the kitchen.
REMOVE THE DOORS OF YOUR KITCHEN It has often been observed
that converting your kitchen cabinets to open shelving also helps in improving the looks of your kitchen. If you want you can also install an open shelf on the top of the dishwasher or a coffee maker. The only thing that you need to keep in mind here is that you need to fill up these open shelves with things that you require every day. It is also necessary for you to ensure that the things that you keep on these shelves are clean and have a good color. Otherwise, it will not give the look that you desire for. If you want you can even paint these shelves white or match it with the color of the walls.

It can make your kitchen cabinets look very stylish and give a farmhouse look to the kitchen. After doing this you can use a very decent color combination in the upper as well as the lower cabinets that will make the cabinets look extremely beautiful and attractive. You are sure to feel very happy every time you visit the kitchen.
ADDING CROWN MOLDING WILL ALSO ADD TO THE BEAUTY OF THE KITCHEN If you are interested to give a

A variable expression is an expression which contains variables along with numbers and operation to define an expression. A few examples of a variable expression include 4x+y, 5ab + 33 Algebraic Expression Example Question Frequently Asked Questions From Algebraic Expressions
How to derive algebraic expressions? An algebraic expression is a combination of constant, variables and algebraic operations(+, -, ×, ÷). We can derive the algebraic expression for a given situation or condition by using these combinations. For example, Sima age is thrice more than Tina. And the total age of Sima and Tina is 40. Expressing the algebraic form of this condition; 3x + x = 40 ⇒ 4x = 40; where x is the age of Tina. Are algebraic expressions polynomials? No, not all algebraic expressions are polynomials. But all polynomials are algebraic expressions. The difference is
polynomials include only variables and coefficients with mathematical operations (+, -, ×) but algebraic expressions include irrational numbers as well. Also, polynomials are continuous function(eg: x2 + 2x + 1) but algebraic expression may not be continuous sometimes (eg: 1/x2 – 1 is not continuous at 1). Is 4 an algebraic expression? No, 4 is not an algebraic expression because an expression should have at least one variable and one operation to be algebraic. 109 What are all the types of algebraic expressions? There are three basic types of algebraic expressions. They are;
1

any teens don’t get enough sleep, usually because they’re busy and tend to skimp on sleep. But sleep problems can keep some teens awake at night even when they want to sleep. Over time, those nights of missed sleep (whether they’re caused by a sleep disorder or simply not scheduling enough time for the necessary ZZZs) can build into a sleep deficit. People with a sleep club

Stages 3 and 4 are the most refreshing of the sleep stages — it is this type of sleep that we crave when we are very tired. The final stage of the sleep cycle is known as REM sleep because of the rapid eye movements that occur during this stage. During REM sleep, other physical changes take place — breathing becomes rapid, the heart beats faster, and the limb muscles don’t move. This is the stage of sleep when a person has the most vivid dreams.
WHY DO TEENS HAVE TROUBLE SLEEPING?
Research shows that teens need at least 8½ hours of sleep a night. You don’t need to be a math whiz to figure out that if you wake up for school at 6:00 a.m., you’d have to go to bed at 9:00 p.m. to reach the 9-hour mark. Studies have found that many teens have trouble falling asleep that early, though. It’s not Edgars Club @ 5 years
because they don’t want to sleep. It’s because their brains naturally work on later schedules and aren’t ready for bed.
downtime teen talk
During adolescence, the body’s circadian rhythm (sort of like an internal biological clock) is reset, telling a teen to fall asleep later at night and wake up later in the morning. This change in the circadian rhythm seems to happen because a teen’s brain makes the hormone melatonin later at night than the brains of kids and adults do. (Melatonin and another hormone, serotonin, help regulate a person’s sleep–wake cycles.) So, teens have a harder time falling asleep. Sometimes this delay in the sleep–wake cycle is so severe that it affects a person’s daily activities. In those cases it’s called delayed sleep phase syndrome or “night owl” syndrome. This isn’t the only reason teens lose sleep, though. Lots of people have insomnia — trouble falling or staying asleep. The
most common cause of insomnia is stress. But all sorts of things can lead to insomnia, including physical discomfort (the stuffy nose of a cold or the pain of a headache, for example), emotional troubles (like family problems or relationship difficulties), and even an uncomfortable sleeping environment (a room that’s too hot, cold, bright, or noisy). Exposing your eyes to excessive light at night — through mobile devices, for instance — also makes it harder to sleep.
It’s common for everyone 111 to have insomnia from time to time. But if insomnia lasts for a month or longer with no relief, then doctors call it chronic. Chronic insomnia can be caused by a number of different problems, including medical conditions, mental-health problems, medication side effects, or substance abuse. People with chronic insomnia usually can get help for it from a doctor, therapist, or other counselor. Worrying about the insomnia can make it even August 2019

worse for some people. A brief period of insomnia can build into something longer lasting when a person becomes anxious about not sleeping or worried about feeling tired the next day. Doctors call thispsychophysiologic insomnia.
COMMON SLEEP PROBLEMS INCLUDE:
PLMD and RLS People with periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD) or restless legs syndrome (RLS) find their sleep is disrupted by leg (or, less commonly, arm) 112 movements, leaving them tired or irritable from lack of sleep. In the case of PLMD, these movements are involuntary twitches or jerks: They’re called involuntary because the person isn’t consciously controlling them and is often unaware of the movement. People with RLS actually feel physical sensations in their limbs, such as tingling, itching, cramping, or burning. The only way they can relieve these feelings is by moving their club

legs or arms to get rid of the discomfort. Doctors can treat PLMD and RLS. For some people, treating an iron deficiency can make them go away; others might need to take other types of medication.
O
bstructive Sleep Apnea A person
with obstructive sleep apnea temporarily stops breathing during sleep because the airway becomes narrowed or blocked. One common cause of obstructive sleep apnea is enlarged tonsils or adenoids (tissues located in the passage that connects the nose and throat). Being overweight or obese also can put someone at risk for it. People with this sleep disorder may snore, have difficulty breathing, and even sweat heavily during sleep. Because it disrupts sleep, a person may feel extremely sleepy or irritable during the day. People who show signs of obstructive sleep apnea, such as loud snoring or excessive daytime sleepiness, should talk to their doctor.
R
eflux In gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), stomach acid moves backward up into the esophagus, producing the uncomfortable, burning sensation known as heartburn. GERD symptoms can be worse when someone is lying down. Even if a person doesn’t notice the feelings of heartburn during sleep, the discomfort it causes can still interfere with the sleep cycle.
N
ightmares
Most teens have nightmares once in a while. But frequent nightmares can disrupt sleep patterns by waking someone during the night. The most common triggers for more frequent nightmares are emotional, such as stress or anxiety. Other things that can trigger them include certain medicines, and consuming drugs or alcohol. Sleep deprivation (getting too little sleep) also can lead to nightmares. If nightmares are hurting your sleep, it’s a good idea to talk to a parent, doctor, or counselor. Edgars Club @ 5 years
N
arcolepsy People
with narcolepsy are often very sleepy during the day and have sleep “attacks” that may make them suddenly fall asleep, lose muscle control, or see vivid dreamlike images while dozing off or waking up. Someone’s nighttime sleep may be disrupted, with frequent awakenings throughout the night.
Narcolepsy can be disturbing because people fall asleep without warning, making it hazardous to do things like drive. A person’s school, work, or social life can be affected by the unusual sleep patterns. Narcolepsy isn’t common diagnosed in teens, but many cases go unrecognized. People usually first begin to have symptoms between the ages of 10 and 25, but may not be propEdgars Club @ 5 years

erly diagnosed until 10–15 years later. Doctors usually treat narcolepsy with medicines and lifestyle changes.
S
leepwalking It’s rare for teens to walk in their sleep; most sleepwalkers are kids. Sleepwalking, which may run in families, tends to happen most often when a person is sick, has a fever, is not getting enough sleep, or is feeling stress. Because most sleepwalkers don’t sleepwalk often, it’s not usually a serious problem. Sleepwalkers tend to go back to bed on
their own and don’t usually remember sleepwalking. (Sleepwalking often happens during the deeper sleep that takes place during stages 3 and 4 of the sleep cycle.) Sometimes, though, a sleepwalker will need help moving around obstacles and getting back to bed. It’s also true that waking sleepwalkers can startle them (but it isn’t 113 harmful), so try to guide a sleepwalker back to bed gently.
WHAT SHOULD I DO?
If you think you’re getting enough rest at night and you’re still feeling tired during the day, it’s a good idea to visit your doctor. Excessive tiredness can be caused by all sorts of health problems, not just problems with sleep. If a sleep problem is suspected, your doctor will look at your overall health and sleep habits. The river crossing problem
A farmer is traveling with a fox, a goose, and a bag of beans. During his journey, he comes across a river with a boat to cross it. The farmer can only fit one thing in the boat with him at a time. If left alone together, the fox will eat the goose or the goose will eat the beans. How does the farmer get everything 114 across the river safely? Answers: The farmer brings the goose across the river first (if he leaves the goose alone, it will either eat the beans or be eaten by the fox). The farmer brings either the fox or the beans across and leaves the other one alone. Now the farmer has two items on the other side of the river, including the goose. If he leaves the goose again, the same problem will occur. So, the farmer must bring the goose back to the other side. The farmer brings the other item back (either the fox or the beans) and leaves the goose alone again. The fox and the beans are now on the other side of the river. The farmer returns and brings the goose across the river again. club
