TRIPES :Bold stripes are all the rage in 2019. Timeless stripes are back in mostly a vertical orientation. Head to toe stripes are easy to pull off; think striped jumpsuit and dresses which require minimal effort but give maximum impact. If head to toe stripes is too much for you try subtle combos – striped tops and shirts to add excitement to your skinnies. To smarten up your stripes for the office throw a fitted blazer over. Earn and wear your stripes this season – this is a must have trend!

This trend is easy to pull off but you also have the attitude and personality for it. To pull it off make sure you cleverly put together all black on trend pieces in textured fabric. INIATURE BAGS Every season has its must have bag. The “it” bag is defined by shape and its size is what sets it apart from the rest. The new miniature bag is worn around the waist or across the torso and has been shrunk to fit no more than a phone and lipstick. The Fanny pack, Waist bag or Belt bag makes a return from the 90s. Dermatologist guide to

Summer Skin

We all know the feeling: You have too many clothes to even fit in your closet, yet you never have anything to wear. club

September 2019

T

hree dermatologists offer their best tips to care for your skin this summer. Dermatologists spend summers underneath the same sun as the rest of us, but somehow their skin manages to stay clear and glowing all season long. Sure, it’s part of the job description, but even the

professionals have to work a bit harder to prevent breakouts and minimize sun damage during the summer months. Warm weather brings a whole slew of skin-care challenges and questions like, “Do I really have to moisturize even if it’s 100 degrees out and my face feels oily?” (Spoiler alert: Edgars Club @ 5 years

look smart beauty Yes.) Luckily, the experts know exactly how to face summer — pun intended — head on. “A solid routine should be applicable to all seasons and all climates. “With that said, there are a couple of changes one might consider when transitioning from winter to summer.” Ahead, we asked three dermatologists for their best summer skin-care advice. Consider this your definitive road map to healthy-looking skin all season long. Meet our experts, then keep scrolling for their favorite summer skin-care hacks and yes, one final reminder to wear broadspectrum SPF.

1

. LIGHTEN UP YOUR SKIN-CARE ROUTINE. If you’re not wearing a winter coat, why should your skin? “In the summer, I generally remind patients that just like their wardrobe, their skin-care routine may need to be a little more lightweight,” says Ibrahim. The heat and humidity of summer means you can swap out a heavier Edgars Club @ 5 years

cleanser (think cream or oil cleanser) in favor of a gentle, foaming option.

2

. ADOPT A DUAL-PURPOSE MOISTURIZER. To help lighten things up, Ibrahim recommends switching to a combination moisturizer and sunscreen during the summer. “A lightweight moisturizer with SPF of 30 or higher may be plenty for most people,” he says. In fact, Ibrahim notes that thicker moisturizers can lead to clogged pores, inflammation, and acne. Especially if you have acne-prone or oily skin, losing one skin-care step with a combination moisturizer/SPF can help keep skin clear.

3

. BUT DON’T STOP MOISTURIZING COMPLETELY. That extra layer of sweat on your face does not count as a moisturizer. “Despite the weather being hot and humid, you still need to moisturize. Even if your skin already feels oily, you should always follow cleansing with a

moisturizer. Moisturizers reestablish the stratum corneum, your outermost layer of the skin, which protects from harmful pollutants and chemicals and prevents further irritation or dryness. This is where that combination moisturizer/SPF comes in: A lightweight texture will help keep that outer layer nourished without feeling too heavy on your skin.

4

. INVEST IN A SOLID VITAMIN C SERUM. “Vitamin C is great year-round, but all the more important in the summer,” says Ibrahim. Vitamin C helps prevent hyperpigmentation, improve the appearance of fine lines, and can help with collagen production. Layer a few drops on your skin between cleansing and moisturizer.

5

. ADD AN EXFOLIATION SKIN-CARE STEP. Dermatologists are often reminding us not to over-exfoliate, but the summertime ‘tis the season to slough away. If September 2019

club

69

look smart beauty

you have oily skin, Ostad suggests incorporating “more exfoliation” into your skin-care routine. That doesn’t mean a daily dose of all your favorite acids, but try slowly increasing the amount of days you exfoliate per week. Ostad recommends alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) pads to “open up blocked pores and remove oils that result in acne.” Plus they feel nice and soothing on stressed-out summer skin.

70

Take a close look at your makeup product labels and only keep those that are non-comedogenic. That’s a fancy word for a product formulated without pore-clogging ingredients. Especially over the summer, wear makeup that is not going to occlude your skin.” That might include options like a powder sunscreen, an oil-free primer, or a lightweight foundation.

. CUT DOWN YOUR TUB TIME. Between workouts, beach days, and plain old summer sweat, many of us shower more than once a day during the summer. Ibrahim recommends keeping showers short, around four to five minutes. Over-showering, or showering in water that is too hot, can lead to over-drying your skin, leading to inflammation and even summertime eczema.

Also, when it comes to makeup during summer months, go minimal. That’s because your skin needs to breathe when the weather is super hot and humid. If you absolutely cannot do without your foundation, go for a tinted moisturizer with SPF and layer it with face powder to avoid any patchy spots. Do not forget your lips. Instead of lipsticks, use tinted lip balms with SPF. Avoid heavy eye makeup. Stick to a simple kajal instead.

7

8

6

. MAKE SURE ALL YOUR MAKEUP IS NONCOMEDOGENIC. club

September 2019

. STAY IN THE SHADE. All our experts recommend their patients

wear sun-protective clothing, wide-brim hats, and sunglasses in the sun. We don’t expect you to wear a long-sleeve shirt every single moment you’re on the beach, but be mindful to expose as little of your body as possible to direct sunlight. That might mean sitting underneath an umbrella, wearing an extra-large hat, or avoiding the midday sun.

9

. DON’T FORGET TO HYDRATE. “Hydration is always important for our skin, but even more so in the summer,” says Ostad. Aim for eight glasses of water a day, which Ostad promises will have “great results” when it comes to your skin. Hydration can also help skin recover after a sunburn — but we know you’re all too smart to get those in the first place.

10

. SPF, SPF, SPF. We saved the most important, fundamental, don’t-leave-homewithout-it tip for last: Wear sunscreen. Each of our experts recommends Edgars Club @ 5 years

a broad spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher on all exposed skin. Don’t forget about hands, feet, ears, and lips. “It is also important to note that sunscreen needs to be reapplied every couple of hours, so make sure to pack extra sunscreen for longer summer days outdoors,” says Ibrahim. Pro tip: Set an alarm on your phone to remind you to reapply.

clarifying mask. For acne-prone areas: You want to soothe these inflamed and irritated areas. Try a calming and soothing mask full of antiinflammatories. For dry areas: Gel-based masks full of B vitamins and hyaluronic acid

are your BFF for these parched areas. For scars and hyperpigmentation: In these areas, it’s crucial to focus on skin cell regeneration. Chose a mask packed with vitamins C and A for healthy results.

MULTI-MASKING Most estheticians and dermatologists will tell you that layering mask after mask isn’t actually helpful for your skin. Too many masks with too many ingredients can leave your skin feeling convoluted and even irritated. Ingredients lose their potency when combined with ones that aren’t conducive. Instead, try multi-masking! One mask can’t heal all, so focus on the different areas and concerns of your face.

71

For oily areas: A clay mask is great. If you’ve already done this step, look for a mattifying or Edgars Club @ 5 years

WHY NUTRITION FROM EATING WELL IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF FITNESS

T

he food we eat plays a vital role in how we look and feel. Regular exercise is important but according to research, nutrition has the largest impact on our fitness. Using food as our medicine has become a popular theme for health improvement.

food intake as the most important part of our fitness programs. Some physicians are teaching healthy eating habits and lifestyle as a way to improve overall health by reducing obesity and related disease.

The trend is now to focus on healthy food intake as a primary fitness goal. When healthy eating habits become a lifestyle, we are healthier and happier. Eating right allows us to reduce body fat, lose a few pounds, feel more confident and reduce our risk of illness. Frequent studies are indicating healthy

dense foods, or “superfoods, include lean proteins, healthy carbohydrates, and fats essential to our health. Superfoods are a rich source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Antioxidants are shown to reduce inflammation in our body helping us fight disease and illness. Inflammation

is said to be the leading cause of many diseases. Powerful antioxidants in leafy greens and vegetables, for example, help detoxify the body removing harmful chemicals. Some superfoods contain compounds that increase our metabolism for more efficient fat burning. Red peppers contain a molecule called capsaicin shown to enhance the rate we burn body fat. Tip: Eating healthy food helps improve health, and can also enable us to reach fitness goals.

How Do Quercetin Rich Foods Help? Quercetin is a powerful

antioxidant naturally occurring in a wide variety of plant foods. In fact, quercetin research indicates it to be one of the most potent antioxidants with numerous health benefits. Many athletes supplement with quercetin to reduce muscle inflammation caused by intense workouts. According to a study published in the International Journal of Preventative Medicine, quercetinsupplementation significantly improved athletic performance, increased metabolic rate and lean mass among athletes. The following foods are a rich source of quercetin: • Apples • Onions • Broccoli • Berries

foods containing certain compounds. We can increase the rate we burn fat naturally according to nutrition research. Eating foods that stimulate and enhance the fat burning process will help us reduce fat more effectively. Adding metabolism boosting foods will be a great supplement to your existing workout and nutrition program. The following foods are shown to increase our metabolism: • Hot peppers (active component capsaicin) • Green tea (active component caffeine) • Black coffee (active component caffeine) • Cold water (500 ml of water daily increased metabolic rate by 30%) • Whole grains (aiding component fiber and iron) • Yogurt (aiding component calcium and probiotics) • Apples (aiding component fiber) • Nuts and seeds (aiding component essential fatty acids) • Fatty fish (aiding component Omega-3 fatty acids)

Peanut Butter Is a Superfood

Peanut butter just so happens to be the number one sports nutrition superfood. It contains healthy fat, is nutrient-dense and shown to provide long-lasting energy for optimal athletic performance. Selecting natural or organic peanut butter is recommended to avoid added sugar and preservatives. Peanut butter contains quality nutrientsand supplies lasting energy at 90 calories per 2 tablespoon serving. It also contains 7 grams of protein per ounce compared September 2019

to other nuts only supplying 4 grams. Adequate protein intake is essential for muscle growth. It is low in saturated fat and cholesterol making it a heart-healthy food. Research indicates consuming 1.5 ounces of peanut butter per day may reduce the risk of heart disease. Tip: Peanut butter is high in fiber and an excellent source of plant protein. It also contains niacin, folate, vitamin E and other essential nutrients and minerals.

What Are Fitness Foods?

74

The term fitness food is interchangeable with superfoods. Eating a diet rich in fitness foods is essential to our health. Incorporating healthy nutrition and knowing what that means is vital to achieving a lean and healthy body. The following is a list of foods favored by fitness enthusiasts: • Oats (high in fiber, improves digestion/ increases metabolism) • Eggs (protein source, muscle building) • Greens (antioxidants, reduces inflammation) • Apples (antioxidants, reduces inflammation/increases metabolism) • Lean meats/fish (amino acids, protein source, muscle building)

Is Coffee Healthy or Not?

Should we drink coffee? This is a popular question and although not the best drink for some, overall studies show coffee as beneficial to our health and fitness. Coffee contains antioxidants but also caffeine. Caffeine is a natural stimulant shown to increase our metabolic rate. club

September 2019

Many athletes are using coffee as a preworkout drink to benefit from this effect. Low to moderate doses (1-2 cups) of coffee are shown to significantly improve athletic performance. Drinking black coffee 30 minutes prior to exercise is said to have the best ergogenic results. It’s shown to improve our endurance and enable us to exercise longer. Coffee is also indicated to improve our mental focus and increase energy levels. Clearer thinking promotes a more productive and effective workout. Coffee is also shown to reduce exercise-induced muscle pain. Coffee also contains powerful antioxidants shown to reduce chronic disease and illness. Studies have shown it helps individuals suffering from Parkinson’s disease and to reduce the incidence of gallstones. Because caffeine is a stimulant, consult your physician prior to drinking coffee if you are hypertensive, pregnant, breastfeeding, or have high blood pressure or diagnosed heart disease.

Eat Superfoods Daily

Superfoods play an important part in achieving and maintaining a healthy body. Nutritionists may vary in their lists of which foods are best but agree they’re all essential. from the pot. Place the eggs into a bowl of ice cold water for 5 minutes. Peel the eggs. Optional step: at this point, you can fry the eggs in a pan on the stovetop to give the eggs a bit more flavor and color. To do this, heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a pan, add the eggs and sprinkle a pinch of paprika, cayenne, turmeric and salt on the eggs. Place the peeled eggs back into the cooked rice and mix well. Garnish with cilantro, mint and ghee-coated cashews and raisins if using.

Notes

To make the optional ghee-coated cashews and raisins, melt 2 tablespoons of ghee in a pan over low-medium heat on the stovetop. Add ⅓ cup of halved cashews and 2 tablespoons of golden raisins to the pan and stir-fry until the cashews begin to turn golden. You can also scramble an egg and add it to the rice for more protein/egg flavor if you’d like! I would do this in a separate pan and then add it to the rice at the end. Most Indians grow up knowing to eat around the whole spices once a dish is served, however if you or your guests are not used to this, you can remove them prior to serving. ASCORBIC ACID Ascorbic Acid Don’t get tripped up by the fancy name; ascorbic acid is actually just vitamin C! (Well, technically, vitamin C is L-ascorbic acid.) Vitamin C/ ascorbic acid is a wonderful antioxidant that reduces fine lines and fights freeradicals as well as acting as a brightening agent that fades dark spots. Ascorbic acid is great for all skin types, so it’s time to get yourself a vitamin C serum no matter who you are.

swan is a warm, welcoming and relaxing city, full of incredible things to see and do. After the hectic time we had exploring Cairo for three days, Aswan came as a wonderful surprise – the weather was stifling hot even in March, but the traffic and street hassle were far less compared to Cairo, and we immediately felt at ease. Egypt is an amazing country, full of history, traditions and culture – and given that Aswan is located in the south of the country, hours away from places like Cairo and Luxor, many travellers may be tempted to leave it out of their Egypt itinerary.

In my opinion, you can’t miss it! Not only can you learn about Ancient Egypt in Aswan, with lots of historical and archaeological sights in the city or just outside, you’ll also find peaceful Nubian villages and beautiful views of the Nile, the perfect antidote to super urbanised Cairo. Sailing the mighty river you’ll also find some peaceful islands where you can spend a day surrounded by nature, and a few hours away you’ll find the temples of Abu Simbel and Philae, which are definitely worth mentioning among Aswan’s main things to do.

. Visit the Spice Market – Best Shopping in Aswan! The spice market in Aswan was by far my favourite in the whole of Egypt. Every night, after spending the day touring Aswan’s many sights and attractions, we crossed the Nile by boat and spent some time browsing Sharia alSouq, the market of Aswan, shopping for cinnamon, saffron, karkade, cloves, bergamot, pepper and nutmeg.

Located in the centre of the town, just a stone’s throw from the train station and the banks of the Nile, the Aswan spice market is the ideal place to hunt for souvenirs – its stalls are full of spices, traditional galebeyas (robes) and fabrics, silverware and treasures of all kinds. It is a fun place to explore, and in general sellers are friendlier and less aggressive than in other markets around the country. It’s worth shopping for perfumes, which in Aswan are said to be especially good. Nubian embroideries also make for a wonderful, unique gift, since they’re hard to find elsewhere in Egypt. If you like karkade, the cool hibiscus drink found everywhere in Egypt, you will September 2019

the Nubian Museum, the best thing to do in Aswan according to Lonely Planet! If you are interested in the culture and history of the Kingdom of Kush (ancient Nubia) this museum is a must. It documents and showcases a culture that has been more or less wiped out with the construction of the Aswan Dam, which flooded much of the original valley. On display there are also many wonderful black and white photos of the incredible project put in place to save the Philae and Abu Simbel temples from the rising waters of the dam, along with extensive photographs of other monuments that are now lost forever under the waters of the lake. In addition to fully explaining the history of Nubia and its people, the ethnographic section shows beautiful Nubian handicrafts and folk art. Do not miss the mud brick mausoleums of the Fatimid cemetery, just behind the museum. The cemetery keepers are happy to take visitors on a tour and can show you the most interesting mausoleums, but do not forget to leave them a small tip (they will definitely remind you!) . Escape the Traffic at Elephantine Island

Aswan may be chilled out in Egyptian terms, but it is still a busy city. If you want to escape some of the bustle but still explore some Ancient Egypt in Aswan, your best bet is heading to Elephantine Island, the largest island in the Nile just opposite the city of Aswan. Part of the island houses the Mövenpick Resort Aswan, one of the top luxury hotels in the city, and a solid accommodation choice if you’re after a hasslefree stay. The island is a delightful place for a walk, wandering the quiet, dusty streets of the traditional Nubian villages of Koti and Siou, with their brightly-painted houses. Koti and Siou are inhabited by the descendants of the ancient population that inhabits the region comprised between Southern Egypt and Northern Sudan. Nubian villages are known for their bright wall paintings – you’ll also notice that life happens in the street, with children running around and playing, and groups of locals chatting on their doorsteps and courtyard. . See the Nilometer and Aswan Museum

At the southern tip of Elephantine Island you’ll also find the ruins of Abu, the oldest settlement in Aswan, including the ancient Temple of the Kingdom of Khnum and the Temple of Satet. Nearby there is also the Aswan Museum – however, the main section, housed in the villa of Sir William Willcocks, is currently closed for restoration. You can only visit the modern annex, but the artefacts it contains are very similar to those found in the Nubian Museum. Down a flight of stairs on the southern tip of the island you’ll also find the famous nilometer, one of the most famous things to see in Aswan, and an example the engineering skills and sophistication of ancient Egyptians. The ancient Egyptians used the nilometer to measure the river level, the times September 2019

Have a Drink at the Old Cataract Hotel Confession time – I LOVE historic hotels, the kind of place where you can retreat to for a drink or to sit in a shaded garden, following the footsteps of legendary travellers. One of such places is the Old Cataract Hotel, a former British colonial property now managed by Sofitel. After being closed for a lengthy restoration, the hotel is now back in business – inside you’ll find crimson chandeliers, Moorish club

The walls of the lobby are adorned with the photos of former guests like Lady Diana, Winston Churchill and Agatha Christie, who also used the hotel as a setting for her novel Death on the Nile. Rooms with Nile view can be had for about €250, which is a steal considering that the hotel is absolutely stunning. Otherwise, you can still experience the atmosphere visiting the panoramic terrace with views over the Nile and Elephantine for a cup of tea or karkade.

Unfinished Obelisk monuments were built with granite coming from the quarries in the vicinity of Aswan, said to be the best in the country. The Northern Quarry near Aswan still houses what was going to be the world’s tallest obelisk – the Unfinished Obelisk, a mammoth slab of granite 42 meters high, 10 more than the Lateran Obelisk in Rome, the tallest standing one in existence. Not much is known about the Unfinished Obelisk – who commissioned it, where it was going to be placed and when. Two words of warning about visiting Nubian villages in Aswan. Please avoid giving sweets or tips to children in exchange for photos, and only take pictures if you can ask an adult for permission. Also, some families keep crocodiles in their houses to show tourists – these crocodiles are usually kept in dire conditions, so don’t reinforce this practice by taking pictures or paying to see them.

. Enjoy the View at the Tombs of the Nobles The Tombs of the Nobles, located on the Eastern bank of the Nile not far from the Nubian village, are mainly tombs of Egyptian princes dating back to the Old Kingdom, but there are some that belong to the Middle and the New Kingdom. Inside, the tombs have marvellous paintings showing scenes of everyday life, but many of the tombs are closed due to club

maintenance work. However, you might find some ‘guardians’ offering to open them up for you – for a fee, of course! The most recognisable tomb is Qubbet el-Hawa, also known as ‘the wind dome’, located on the top of the sand hill. Inside, there is nothing to see, but the hike to the top is worthwhile, with excellent views of the entire Nile valley, as well as Aswan and the nearby Nubian villages. The hike is very sandy it’s very hot year round, but in summer the heat becomes truly unbearable. Try to go there early in the morning, or towards sunset!

10

. Check Out the Aga Khan Mausoleum This is definitely one of the most off the beaten track things to do in Aswan. The Aga Khan Mausoleum stands out imposingly and austere on the top of a hill overlooking the Nile, close to the villa where the Aga Khan used to spend part of the winter all throughout his life. The Aga Khan was the 48th Imam of the Shiite Ismaili Muslims, a sect that was mostly developed in India. He died in 1957 and a pink limestone mausoleum was built not far from his villa, in

the style of Fatimid tombs. After the Aga Khan’s death, his surviving widow continued to leave a red rose on his white marble tomb in Carrara. The custom continues, and every day a red rose is still placed on the sarcophagus.

11

.Visit Philae Temple Another not to be missed thing to do in Aswan, Philae Temple is located on an island in the middle of the Nile, so you’ll have to hire a boatman in Aswan to take you or join a tour. Yet, that’s why this temple is so special – reaching it requires a bit of planning (or fierce negotiating with felucca captains), and few people make the effort. You might even have the place to yourself, if you visit later in the day. Dedicated to the deity Isis, the main temple was transferred by UNESCO to the neighbouring island of Agilkia, after the site was partly flooded by the construction of the Aswan dam. The ruins of a Christian church have been found within the temple grounds. It is believed that these early Christians are responsible for the damage inflicted on the hieroglyphics on the left side of the temple. Edgars Club @ 5 years

uilding a new home, remodeling a room or simply replacing an old or damaged interior door? Your bedroom, closet, bathroom, hallway, living room and office doors make a huge statement in your home. Make sure they make the right impression by picking the interior doors that match your vision. Read on to find out more about the various options available for interior doors. We’ll help you choose the door style, material and finish that match your personality and add to the existing charm of your home.

Interior Door Style

To begin, it’s good to understand your options when it comes to door style. Interior doors come in hinged panel, club

September 2019

flush, bi-fold, French, sliding, pocket, and other styles. Here’s a description of the most popular door styles, so you can be familiar with your options.

Panel Doors Panel doors are the most

commonly used interior doors for residential buildings. They have square or rectangular patterns that can range from a single large panel, to eight or more small panels. The patterns can also include rounded tops and decorative finishes, as well as glass inserts to add extra glamour. Selecting a door from this category simply comes down to personal taste. Interior doors styles that are currently trending in new homes include: the three panel mission, five panel equal and standard whole panel door.

Flush Doors Flush interior doors offer a clean and classic option for your home. The door is completely flat and offers an affordable price tag for most home owners.

Bifold Doors Bifold doors are a set of

interior doors hinged together that fold into each other and are mounted and hung from a track. Bifold interior doors are most commonly found in areas like bedroom closets, laundry rooms and the kitchen pantry. Consider using this type of door in small spaces, or in areas where you’re hesitant to dedicate a full swinging door footprint.

French Doors French doors add a dramatic touch to any entryway. This door configuration contains two hingehung doors mounted on either side of the opening that swing towards one another. French doors commonly use glass inserts or decorative panels to add glamour to your space. These interior doors are commonly used in areas meant to put a room of your home on display, like music rooms, home offices, living rooms, master bedrooms, etc. Sliding Doors Sliding doors are a less

commonly used door configured by hanging two or more interior doors mounted to a track. They do not swing, so are useful in areas without available floor space, but, do require space to either the right or left of each door to ensure the doors can slide freely back and forth to provide a wide enough entry into the door’s room. While not Edgars Club @ 5 years

shop smart home

extremely common, these interior doors can be used to provide a unique option for rooms that may originally have been constructed for a French door opening.

Pocket Doors Pocket doors are an ‘old

school’ style that has recently come back with a bang. These interior doors slide similarly to a sliding door, but generally are just a single door mounted to a rolling overhead track that slides into a prepared space within the wall. New versions of the pocket door allow double doors to be stored in spaces on either side of the doorway. An added benefit to the pocket door is that the wall basically hides any door part, making it a great option for rooms where the door rarely needs to be closed. Pocket doors are great to use in small spaces like toilet rooms, passages where it would make sense to end a room, closets, music rooms, etc.

Interior Door Material

Selecting a door material usually comes down to two factors: taste and budget. We suggest going in to a local door shop to feel the difference between opening solid wood, solid core and hollow core interior doors, before you submit your order.

Solid Wood Doors

Solid wood doors naturally have the most heft and weight to their feel. They are extremely sturdy, offering resistance to cracking or chipping, and have a pleasing aesthetic appeal. While generally the most expensive option, many buyers consider solid wood to be a good value due to their long lasting composition. September 2019

club

downtime home

Solid wood interior doors also offer great insulation and provide a natural sound barrier.

Solid-Core Doors

Solid-core doors are made from plywood or molded composite exterior, with a filled-wood-fiber interior. Solid-core doors generally look and feel similar to that of a solid wood door, maintaining the same quality or ‘expensive’ feel. Again, they offer good insulation and offer a quality sound barrier between rooms. These doors, like solid wood are heavy and may contract with heat and moisture levels, which may cause issues if extreme weather conditions are a factor in your home.

Hollow-Core Doors

100 Generally the least expensive of the three materials, hollow-core doors are constructed from a wood frame, plywood or hardwood surface and filled with rigid cardboard to maintain their shape. While lighter and less expensive than solid wood or solid-core doors, hollow-core are not as durable or fire-resistant. The sound barrier is also weaker due to the door’s composition. If heat and humidity changes in your home are of concern, hollow-core doors provide a great option, as they do not warp from these conditions.

Stain Finishes Wood stain is a popular way to finish new interior doors. The stain gives the doors a warm, classic look that adds to a traditional or bungalow atmosphere. Stains are most popular for solid wood doors, as it emphasizes the wood grain. Stains are also available in a variety of colors. Depending on the type of door material you have selected, you’ll want to ask your door manufacturer/salesman to offer recommendations on appropriate stains for that material. Make sure to consider your trim colors if those are also being stained.

Paint Finishes

A simple paint finish is a great way to add color or charm to existing or new interior doors. Homeowners most often paint their interior doors when hoping for a contemporary feel or to better match existing trim or wall colors.

Quick! Count the number of times that the letter F appears in the following sentence: “Finished files are the result of years of scientific study combined with the experience of years.” — How many did you find? Solution: Most people say three. Why? We often don’t correctly process the word “OF” for two reasons. First, the letter F usually makes the “f” sound, like in “fox”. However, in the word “of”, it makes 110 a “v” sound. Second, you have probably read the word “of” so many times in your life that you process it as one unit, overlooking the second letter/ sound.
