very Merry Christmas to you all. December is the month we pack away the pains and toils of the year and celebrate making it to the end of another earth cycle around the sun. It comes with its bitter sweet moments but all can agree that Dece, ber is party month. What do we celebrate, life, love, joy, family and most importantly the love of God to give us His only son. As a Christian I would like to share a moment of reflection .and pass on the immense love and goodwill that comes with this season.

THE NATURAL HAIR MOVEMENT Written by Marshall Malikula

atural hair is not just a trend; it’s more than a lifestyle. …It’s a MOVEMENT! More and more women are saying good-bye to chemical relaxers and transitioning to their natural textures. Society, the beauty industry and corporate culture have long taught us natural Afro and locks are inappropriate and unprofessional. Whether you are a natural hair newbie or just in need of some tips to prepare you for the warmer months ahead, here is how you can enhance your natural hair care;
OISTURISE: Moisture is an afro-textured head of hair’s best friend, so one of the best things you can do for your hair this summer is to invest in some seriously hydrating products. Experts recommend adopting the liquid, oil, cream - LOC method, which involves wetting the hair with water or a water-based product, sealing in the moisture with an oil and then applying a cream product to close the hair cuticle. This is a proven method to prevent moisture loss.
H
AIR SPRAY: In order to fend off dryness, I spray my hair with water infused with a few drops of olive or castor oil every morning. Use products that contain nourishing natural ingredients like argan, avocado oil, jojoba and shea butter. These are most beneficial for taming frizz, keeping the hair’s moisture levels high and stopping further breakage.
Edgars Club @ 5 years
Fashion guidance
HAMPOOING: Natural hair tends to have more frizz than other hair types because of dehydration in the strands, which leaves it more vulnerable to breakage. One of the biggest perks of having Afro hair is that it doesn’t require as much washing as other hair types. I can attest that one of the best ways to keep your hair in top condition during the warmer months is to keep shampooing to an absolute minimum. I wash my hair weekly with the most nourishing shampoo formulated for dry or damaged hair.
OW TO HAIR GROWTH: I know I am speaking to somebody! Using the right protective measures and products on your Afro will keep it strong and healthy, ensuring speedy natural hair growth. Moisture, moisture, moisture! It’s essential for healthy-looking hair. Keeping your Afro well nourished and moisturised will help to enhance elasticity and shine while curbing brittleness and breakage.
C
OVERING HAIR: Naturally hair gets strained when we sleep due to tossing and turning. Wrap your hair before you go to sleep. A silk scarf will protect your hair from friction, preventing tangles, dryness and further damage. If not, use the good old pair of satin pantyhose. I grew up with women and this was commonplace at our household. Use a silk or satin pillowcase. A silk pillowcase reduces the loss of natural hair oils and moisture, minimises damage to thinning hair and prevents split ends and frizzing. December 2019

VOID HEATED TOOLS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE: Heat is one of the biggest damagers of hair, especially if you want to keep natural. If using a hair dryer is necessary, set it on the lowest heat and remember to always use a heat protectant spray. When you do have time rather let your hair dry naturally You’ll definitely be saving money on quitting the relaxer appointments every eight weeks, however, that doesn’t mean you have to stop the salon trips altogether. Not only is it essential that you have a regular trim to banish any split ends and fairy knots which hinder growth, you should also book in hair oil treatments every few months.
F
18
INALLY for sisters who had fallen off the wagon and are trying to transition back to natural, avoid excessive heat styling. Your hair is extremely susceptible to breakage at the point of demarcation (where you new hair texture meets the old). “Protective styles such as cornrows, twist outs, and braids are a great way to transition because you are giving your hair a break from dayto- day styling, which often puts stress on your hairline,”
club

Here is my parting shot for you all Naturalistas – own it and be proud! Besides you will look good without breaking the bank…nudge … nudge… wink… wink!

Vertical Stripes 2019 TREND T
he truth is, we didn’t quite get enough of stripes last year, so 25 we’re bringing the statement style with us right into 2019. If you hadn’t noticed, prints are pretty huge right now, but what makes stripes our all time favourite is that they’re the most timeless print of all. In fact, we’re pretty sure we’ll still be rocking them when we’re 80. The stripes fashion trend manages to seamlessly transition itself from season to season and we’re definitely not complaining. excitement to your skinnies and striped jumpers that make snug seriously stylish.

Chain 2019Patterns TREND C
hain patterns can be subtle or bold. They have been around for decades. Way before the ‘90s, but since the House of Versace put them back on the map during the Seattle grunge era, I think of them as an extremely ‘90s look. Versace hasn’t stopped selling the pattern, because it’s a signature look for the brand across a range of wardrobe items. As a nod to the ‘90s, other designers are also bringing back chain patterns. Right now they are a fringe trend, but maybe they will stick around and go mainstream. We’re seeing chain patterns on tops, dresses, jackets, scarves and bottoms pop up at retail. You’ll probably find vintage chain patterned items in thrift and consignment stores too.

We take a glimpse at what’s hot and happening in the world of beauty. TOM FORD –VELVET ORCHID In Velvet Orchid, the daring and dramatic floral signature of black orchid is the inspiration for a warm and enveloping fragrance that is lavished with shimmering freshness, dramatic petals, honey, and rum. The woods and spices of the original scent recede and a contrasting veil of petally floralcy casts a shadow of ultra-femininity throughout. A new character emerges: one that pulls rather than pushes; and that is more harmonious than mysterious— elegantly refined and polished. Velvet Orchid has an addicting beauty that seduces.

FITNESS BUZZ
We take a glimpse at what’s hot and happening in the world of fitness.
WHAT IS CREATINE? A supplement that can support increases in size and strength—as attested to by countless scientific studies—will, boost lean muscle mass and amplify strength gains. Creatine’s major benefits—among many—are twofold. It increases muscle energy, allowing one to train harder and to reap the results. And secondly, it hydrates muscle tissue, which, over time, causes them to become bigger and stronger. Naturally produced in the kidneys, pancreas and liver, creatine is transported to muscle tissue where it is transformed into creatine phosphate, from which the energy molecule ATP is produced to regenerate the muscles’ ability to contract and generate power during short-burst (anaerobic) activity.
54
BUYING EXERCISE EQUIPMENT Ignore claims that an exercise machine or device can provide long-lasting, easy, “no-sweat” results in a short time. These claims are false:You can’t get the benefits of exercise unless you exercise. Question claims that a product can burn fat off a particular part of the body — for example, the buttocks, hips or stomach. Achieving a major change in your appearance requires sensible eating and regular exercise that works the whole body. club

1 tablespoon fresh rosemary, finely chopped 1 tablespoon fresh sage, finely chopped 1 tablespoon fresh thyme, finely chopped 1 teaspoon Kosher salt for the easy turkey gravy: 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 shallot, minced ¼ cup all-purpose flour 1 cup good white wine maple glazed roasted spatchcocked turkey pan drippings 2–3 cups turkey stock or low-sodium chicken stock INSTRUCTIONS Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F. Mix the maple herb butter: In a small bowl, mix together the softened butter, garlic, rosemary, sage, thyme, and Kosher salt. Set aside. Spatchcock the turkey: Place the turkey on a sturdy surface, breast side facing down. Using a sharp knife or very sharp kitchen shears, carefully snip along each side of the turkey’s spine, until it’s completely detached. Set aside. Use your hands to stretch open the ribs of the turkey, revealing the inner cavity. Use a sharp knife to carefully score the breast bone. Flip the turkey, so its breast side is facing you. Place your hands on the center of its breasts, on the breast bone. Use your body weight to apply pressure to the chest plate and crack the bone. Woohoo! Your turkey is spatchcocked! the onions across the bottom of large roasting pan. Pour the white wine over top. If desired, toss the back bone and neck into the roasting pan too – this adds extra flavor to your gravy! Lay the spatchocked turkey in the roasting pan over the onions, breast side facing up. Gently tuck its wings underneath its breasts to prevent burning. Use your hands to spread the herb butter all over the turkey, between its skin & meat. This helps keep the turkey nice & juicy as it roasts! Pat the outside completely dry with a paper towel, then drizzle the olive oil over top. Use your hands to rub the olive oil all over the outside of the turkey. Season generously with Kosher salt and ground black pepper. Roast the turkey for 30 minutes. Remove the turkey from the oven and brush maple syrup all over the outsides of the turkey. Reduce the heat to 350 degrees and continue to roast for 1 additional hour, removing the turkey from the oven to brush with maple syrup every 20 minutes. You may want to rotate the pan every time you place it back in the oven, to ensure even roasting & browning. The turkey will be ready to pull from the oven once a thermometer inserted in the thickest part of the thigh registers an internal temperature of 170 degrees. Rest the turkey at room temperature for 30-45 minutes before carving.
Make the gravy: Meanwhile, as the turkey rests, make the gravy. Transfer the drippings to a large liquid measuring cup December 2019

and use a spoon to skim off most of the fat and discard. There will be a lot since the turkey is butter roasted – leave some in, but you definitely don’t need it all! Place the roasting pan over two burners on your stove. Add the butter and shallots and cook for 4-5 minutes over low heat, stirring occasionally, until the shallots are softened. Sprinkle the flour over the whole roasting pan and cook, whisking constantly, until a darkened roux forms, 2-3 minutes. While whisking constantly, slowly pour in the white wine. Let the mixture bubble & reduce slightly. Pour in the turkey drippings & stock; you’ll want 4 cups total liquid so the amount of stock you use will depend on how much drippings you have (if you have 1 cup drippings, use 3 cups stock; if you have 2 cups drippings, use 2 cups stock, etc.). Continue to whisk until the gravy reduces to your desired thickness. Taste and season with salt and ground black pepper as needed; this will vary based on the amount of salt that’s in your drippings & your stock so use your judgement. Turn the heat to low to keep the gravy warm until you are ready to serve; if a film forms at the surface just give it a good whisk & it will incorporate back into the gravy in no time. Serve: Carve, serve, & enjoy!

dinner – it just won’t happen! Let your turkey thaw out in the refrigerator, following the general rule of thumb that you need to defrost 24 hours per every 4 pounds – so, a 12-14 pound bird will take about 3 days to thaw out in the fridge. 2. How to spatchcock turkey: If you’ve never spatchcocked turkey before, I suggest checking out this post. It has step-by-step photos for the entire process. Having the right tools will help immensely: you’ll need good kitchen shears & a good knife. Other helpful tools for turkey roasting? A roasting pan, turkey baster, & a pastry brush. 3. Roasting time for your turkey will vary based on the size of your turkey! Follow the general rule of thumb that you want to roast a spatchcocked bird 6 minutes per pound. For a 15 pound turkey, this amounts to 90 minutes total. For a smaller bird, you’ll want to pull it out of the oven a little early; a larger bird a little later. Always use a meat thermometer to check to make sure the thickest part of the thigh registers an internal temperature of 175 degrees. 4. Wine: Because the wine is an important flavor-builder for both the turkey & the gravy, you’ll want to use a nice white wine. No need to break the bank here, but it’s important that the wine has good flavor on its own. Use a drinkable dry white wine, such as an unoaked Chardonnay, or steal a few cups from whatever you plan to serve with dinner!

Live Health WHITE MEATS FROM RED MEATS? White meat generally refers to fish poultry or foul, like chicken, duck, turkey while red meat is considered to be mammal beasts like cattle, camels, rabbits, sheep and the like. MECHANICS Elastic Strings Modulus and Natural Length Elastic strings are strings which are not a fixed length (they can be stretched). Some strings are more stretchy than others and the modulus (or modulus of elasticity) of a string is a measure of how stretchy it is. The modulus is measured in newtons. The length of an elastic string which does not have any forces acting upon it is known as the natural length of the string. If a string has been stretched, then the extension is how much longer the string is as a result of being stretched. Note that the extension = length of the string - natural length. Hooke’s Law Edgars Club @ 5 years
Hooke’s law states that the tension in an elastic string (or spring), T, is found using the following formula: , where l is the modulus of elasticity of the string, x is the extension of the string and l is the natural length of the string. Example A string with modulus (of elasticity) 10 N has a natural length of 2m. What is the tension in the string when its length is 5m? T = 10 × 3 = 15 2 So the tension in the string is 15N. Potential Energy Stored in String When an elastic string is extended it has elastic potential energy. • Elastic potential energy
stored in string = lx2/2l In problems involving strings (and springs), if the only external force doing work is gravity then energy is conserved. Hence elastic potential energy + gravitational potential energy + kinetic energy = constant. Springs What has been said about strings also applies to springs. However, springs can be compressed as well as stretched. If a spring is compressed, then Hooke’s Law still applies but T represents the “thrust” rather than the tension (basically the only difference is that thrust acts in the opposite direction to tension). 76 76
Simple Harmonic Motion arises when we consider the motion of a particle whose acceleration points towards a fixed point O and is proportional to the distance of the particle from O (so the acceleration increases as the distance from the fixed point increases). As the particle moves away from the fixed point O, since the acceleration is pointing towards O, the particle will slow down and eventually stop (at Q), before returning to O. It will keep going and then again slow down as it reaches P before stopping at P and returning to O once more.
The particle will therefore move between two fixed points (P and Q). The amplitude of the motion is the distance from O to either P or Q (the distances are the same). A particle which moves under simple harmonic motion will have the equation • = -ϖ2x where ϖ is a constant club
December 2019
(note that this just says that the acceleration of the particle is proportional to the distance from O). You may be asked to prove that a particle moves with simple harmonic motion. If so, you simply must show that the particle satisfies the above equation. Motion in a Circle This part covers Motion in a circle. Angular Speed Imagine an object is moving round a circular path.
The angular speed is how fast the angle (which I have labelled “a”) changes. So it measures how fast the object is moving round the circle. Angular speed is usually measured in radians per second (rad s-1), which
is how many radians the particle moves through in a second. Alternatively, it can be measured in revolutions per second, which is how many complete circles the object moves through in a second. There is a formula connecting “normal” speed (usually called “linear speed”) and angular speed: v=rw where v is the linear speed, r is the radius of the circle and w is the angular speed. Example A particle is moving round a circle of radius 10cm. The angular speed is 2 rad s-1. Find the (linear) speed. We want the radius in metres, which is 0.1m . Using the formula above, we get: v = 0.1 × 2 = 0.2 So the speed is 0.2 m s-1 . Note that if you are given the angular speed in terms of revolutions per second, you would have to convert to radians per second first. To do this, remember that 1 revolution per second is the same as 2p radians per second, Edgars Club @ 5 years
because there are 2p radians in a circle. Radial Acceleration If a body is moving around a circle, even if it is moving at a constant speed it is accelerating. This is because it is changing direction (it isn’t moving in a straight line). The direction of this acceleration is towards the centre of the circle and the magnitude is given by: a = v2/r where v is the speed and r is the radius of the circle. Using our formula above, this can also be written as: a = r w2 Which of these you use will depend on whether you are dealing with speed or angular speed. The acceleration occurs because there is a force acting: Imagine that you are in a car going fast round a bend to the left. You will feel a force pulling you to one side (the left hand side). This is the force causing the acceleration. The force acts towards the centre of the circle. Conical Pendulum A conical pendulum looks a bit like this: Edgars Club @ 5 years
live smart club crammer speed of P.
P is a particle. AP is a string. P is moving around
the blue circle with angular velocity w. Example Suppose we have a conical pendulum as above, where the particle has a mass of 2 kg, the radius of the circle the particle moves in is 0.5 m and the angle at A is 45 degrees. Find the angular
The weight is 2g (W= mg), where g is the acceleration due to gravity. Resolving vertically: Tcos45 = 2g Hence (√2T)/2 = 2g so T = 2√2 g (1) Now use Newton’s 2nd Law to find the equation of motion in the radial direction: (“F = m r w2”) Tsin45 = 2 × 5 × w2 Use (1) to eliminate T: 2√2 g × (√2)/2 = 10w2 g/5 = w2 So w = √(g/5) Taking g = 9.8, we find that the angular speed is therefore 1.4 rad s-1 Motion on a Banked Surface Now consider the motion of a particle round a “banked surface”. By this, I mean a circular racing track, for example, which is sloped up from the centre to help the cars/ bikes keep on the track at high speeds. Now, if the car is going very fast, it would slip up the slope as it moves round the circle. If it is going slowly, it will slip down. December 2019

UNI edition 10 WISE T HINGS TO DO OVER YOUR HOLIDAY BREAKS

ollege students get very busy during the semester. Between classes, homework, friends, and organizations, it can be difficult to have time for everything that needs to be done. When break comes around, students have a ton of free time. It is important, however, to use this time wisely and to stay focused on the future. There are things that can be done to help you relax and still remain focused on your career path. 1. Spend time with family. If you live on campus, you rarely get to see your family. Even if you commute, college life can get so busy that you do not get to spend as much time as you would like to with your family. Holiday club

breaks are a perfect time to spend time with both your immediate and your extended family. Plan a holiday gathering, a family activity night, or even just a time to sit down at dinner together to reconnect with your loved ones. Tell each other what has been happening in your lives and encourage each other. 2. Catch up with friends from high school. While you may have lost touch with most of the people you graduated high school with, there are always a couple that you remained really close with. You may have gone to different colleges, but you remained in touch (thank you, Facebook and texting). Breaks, for the most part, line up so that you’ll be
able to see each other at least once. Do something you loved to do together when you saw each other regularly. Try something new together. Fill each other in on what your semester was like and what you are up to! 3. Update your resume. Life can get crazy during the semester, and you may have new organizations, experience, or jobs/ internships that you have not added to your resume yet. Break is the perfect time to add them! This is crucial so that you are prepared to apply for other jobs and internships. It is important to update your resume and portfolio so that you look as great as possible when you apply for internships, jobs, or even scholarships. Edgars Club @ 5 years
4. Read a book outside of required reading for school. Required reading for school is, for the most part, about your major. From textbooks to novels, many of these books are focused on one subject. Reading, however, should be about learning new things and perspectives. Over break, stroll through a local bookstore and find a book that looks interesting but is outside of what you know. Read a novel about 18th century England. Pick up a biography of a famous scientist. While these things may be outside what your major is, you may find something useful that can be applied to your major. 5. Treat yourself to dinner and a movie. School can get stressful. Between homework, class, studying, friends, and internships, it can seem like you have no alone time or any time to have fun. Use your time over break to spoil yourself. Treat yourself to dinner at your favorite restaurant and go see the movie you have been looking forward Edgars Club @ 5 years

to coming out. Use this time to relax and rewind after a long semester of hard work. You deserve it! 6. Set goals for when you return to school. While you may not want to think about school on break, it is important to keep your mind focused on what you hope to achieve. Make a list of goals you want to accomplish when school starts back up. Think about joining or starting a club, getting an internship, or boosting your grades. Set a plan for how you hope to accomplish these goals. Make a list of organizations on campus that interest you and make an effort to contact them about joining. Ask your career center for advice about applying for internships.
As soon as you get your syllabi for your classes, write out your assignments in a calendar and make a point to check it regularly and study more. 7. Catch up on sleep.
Sleep can seem evasive when you are busy with clubs, class, and homework. Students tend to stay up late, trying to get assignments done that they do not have time to do during the day.
Over break, make a point to catch up on sleep. It may be tempting to stay up, and out, late, but catching up on sleep will help you reenergize for the next semester. It is alright to stay up late to do something special with your family and friends, but make it a special thing that does not happen frequently. 8. Do something new. During the semester, it is easy to have a routine, and it is helpful. Over break, you have an opportunity to break your routine. Go to a store in your town or city you have never been to. Try the new ethnic restaurant that just opened down the street. Doing something new can inspire you to do something you have not done, and can open your eyes to new cultures. December 2019

TEENS AND PARTYING The best way to teach is through specifically designed impulse control activities for teens.
B
y setting some sensible rules for your teen and his friends, a party at your home can be virtually worry-free.
Setting rules
Teens and Partying You can already guess the drawbacks of entertaining teenagers in your own home (fingerprints all over the walls, no food left in club

the refrigerator, and so on), but there are some definite advantages. To begin, if they’re at your house, you know where they are. In addition, if they’re at your house, you’ll get to know them (a little, anyway). It’s also nice to let your teenager know that you welcome his friends just as you welcome your own. Another thought to
keep in mind: in most communities (especially in rural or suburban areas) the kids don’t have a lot of options; movies are expensive, and ice cream parlors or local restaurants often close early. If they’re looking for a safe place to simply hang out, they need a home. And actually “hanging out” at your place is preferable Edgars Club @ 5 years
downtime teen talk to an official party that carries with it higher expectations than simply letting kids sit around and watch a movie or listen to music. “There’s a Party Tonight!” If you do step into the role of official “party-thrower” for a birthday celebration or post-prom bash, keep the following in mind: . Ask your teen to draw up a guest list of a limited number of kids. In general, 20–30 kids is a manageable group. (Large parties are almost impossible to control.) . Specify “no crashers.” Once teens can drive, party-crashing can and does occur; indicate that you’ll be around throughout the party, and if too many kids appear, you’ll have to close down. . Agree ahead of time to the hours of the party. An end time gives you added control. . If your teen needs a reminder, say that alcohol and drugs will not be tolerated. If kids bring in beer or any other substance, you can

certainly ask them to leave. . Specify that those who come to the party are to stay at the party; kids arriving, leaving, and returning are more likely to be bringing in illegal substances or are partaking elsewhere and then coming back—and you don’t need that either. . While you certainly don’t want to monitor the party moment-to-moment, try to walk by once or twice during the evening (if only to bring in more food). If the party is in a basement rec room, keep some of the food upstairs. If the kids come up and realize parents are around, their behavior will probably remain more civilized. . Invite another parent to keep you company. This also provides you with someone who knows some of the kids whom you don’t know. . If you have agreed to a large party, notify the neighbors, and tell the police. The police may be able to make suggestions regarding parking, and if

they’re keeping their eye out for you that night, it’s all for the good.
Partying Elsewhere
Parents tell horror stories that sound like something straight out of Risky Business: they were out for the evening, and their teenagers entertained without permission. The results were disastrous: the neighbors called the police, many of the kids got drunk, and the living room furniture will never look the same. You don’t want to be those parents, but you also don’t want your teen to be at that party. That’s why I’m going to give you some additional guidelines. Every book you read says, “Call the parents to find out if anyone is going to be home.” I recommend that, too, but with full acknowledgment that it’s difficult to call people you don’t know to quiz them about their plans and still maintain a relationship with your teen. As alternatives, you might try the following: (Don’t tell your teen that you plan to call. It will only make December 2019

him mad.) . Call, but call with an offer: “How nice of you to have the kids over Friday night. Could I drop off some soda ahead of time, or is there anything else I can do to help you out?” If the party was a “surprise” party for the parents, you’ve just blown the whistle in the nicest of ways. If the call goes well, you’ve also made a new contact. . Network. Call people you know who may be able to tell you what the scene will be like, or who can call and find out the arrangements for the party. . Discuss times and transportation with your teen. What are the hours of the party, and how is your teen getting there? Remind her that if she goes elsewhere—for any reason—she’s to call you. . Tell your teen that she can call you (or another adult whom you both trust) at any time—no questions asked—if she wants to leave the party. . Remind your teen never to ride with someone who has been

drinking. . Stay awake, or have your teen wake you, when he gets home. This is your opportunity . to check on what condition he’s in following a party. . Be suspicious if your teen frequently sleeps elsewhere after a party. He may not want to run into you for some reason. (Get the hint?)

Establishing responsibilities
Tuning In Throughout elementary school you’ve probably been in close touch with the families of your children’s friends. As your kids enter middle school and high school, it’s more important than ever that you keep building those connections. You can stay in touch by meeting them at school functions, or simply chatting if you run into them around town. If your parent-chain is strong enough, you ought to be able to find out what’s really happening on any given weekend with only a phone call or two. While the Cat’s Away… If you’re going to be gone
for a few days and are planning to leave your 17- or 18-year-old at home alone, you need to carefully evaluate the situation. Here are a few pointers: You may want to rethink your plans. If your teen can’t hold off a crowd who learns you’re not at home, both you and your teen may be very sorry you ever left town. If you have to be away and your teen can’t or won’t come along, consider asking a relative or hiring someone to come stay during the night. Ask if your teen can stay with a friend.
* * * *
Tell neighbors you trust to keep an eye out while you are gone. Ask that they call the police (or a person you designate) if a large gathering shows up at your place. One mother of a basically good teen who ran into problems when she went on a weekend trip tells the following story: “This winter my son, who is a senior in high school, Edgars Club @ 5 years
said to me, ‘Mom, why don’t you go skiing on the weekends anymore?’ and I replied: ‘Because when I went away for a weekend last year, you proved to me why I can’t.’ And he’s a basically good kid.” Like it or not, our child care responsibilities don’t necessarily get easier as our kids get older. (You may remember fondly the days when relief was a phone-call-to-the-sitter away!)
Setting Curfews: Pumpkin Time
Just as Cinderella’s fairy godmother did not hesitate to give her a curfew, neither should you pause before telling your teen a time by which he is to be home. And just as adjustable mortgages have their advantages, so do adjustable curfews. Most families have success by establishing a set time for nights when the kids are “just hanging out” and another time for special occasions. If you’re in sync with the rest of your teen’s friends, enforcement will be a snap. Edgars Club @ 5 years
The consequences for missing a curfew and not calling should involve coming in earlier the next night, or not going out at all—depending on how serious you consider the infraction.
Pajama Party
As if parenting isn’t tough enough…your 16-year-old daughter skips through the living room and announces, “Bye, Mom. We’re all sleeping over at John’s tonight.” You really needed to deal with coed sleepovers, didn’t you? Yeah, right, as the teen set would say. With this issue, like everything else, you have to decide what makes you comfortable. If the thought of your son or daughter participating in a coed pajama party drives you crazy, then forget it. Lay down the law: he or she just can’t, because you say so. (You do have the right to say that occasionally; just not too often, or you’ll lose your ability to communicate effectively.) However, if you’re at all open to learning more about today’s social scene,
consider the following reasons given by parents who permitted coed group sleepovers: “My son went to a coed sleepover the night of the junior prom,” explains one mother. “He attended the prom with the group of kids he hangs out with. There are both boys and girls in the crowd, but none of them are romantically linked. When they asked if they could come back to one of the girl’s houses for the night, we agreed. We know the family well, and we found it far preferable to them going to clubs or looking for a ‘party’ in some other way. They’re good kids, and all things considered, this seemed like an acceptable alternative.

A5 sheet of green paper (or white) A little brown paper/ card Scrap of yellow paper for the star Snowflake confetti Glue stick A6 Cardstock (I used blue) DIRECTIONS
1. Fold your paper along the 15cm edge as neatly and evenly into a paper fan as possible. You should be left with a concertina paper strip 15cm long. We made 0.5mm wide accordion folds. 2. Cut this paper strip into 5cm, 4cm, 3cm, 2cm and 1cm (A5 is actually JUST a little smaller than 15cm, club

so just adjust each section by a couple of mm and you are fine!). As mentioned.. it isn’t exact. Just make sure you get 5 pieces that get smaller each time. Prepare and stick your Paper Tree stem
1. Take your brown piece of paper. You will need approximately 3cm x 3cm. 2. Fold it in half. 3. Then fold the edges in by 0.5mm. So you should have folds: 0.5mm, 1cm, 1cm, 0.5mm 4. Glue the 0.5mm strips onto the card. You now have a “Pop up” steam. Glueing in your Paper Fan Chrismas Tree.
1. Take your longest strip and glue just above the tree trunk on the LEFT side of the card. 2. Then layer the remaining 4 strips evenly – leaving a little space for a star. 3. Once all are glued in place. Carefully add glue to the “upward facing” surface of your strip. This can be a bit fiddly.. as the concertinas like to bounce around a bit. 4. Hold in black. Flap over the right side of the card and secure to the the green strips. 5. When you open the card up, you should have your paper fan Edgars Club @ 5 years

Christmas Tree Legend T
wo little children were sitting by the fire one cold winter’s night. All at once they heard a timid knock at the door, and one ran to open it.
There, outside in the cold and the darkness, stood a child with no shoes upon his feet and clad in thin, ragged garments. He was shivering with cold, and he asked to come in and warm himself. “Yes, come,” cried both the children; “you shall have our place by the fire. Come in!” They drew the little stranger to their warm seat and shared their supper with him, and gave him their bed, while they slept on a hard bench. In the night they were awakened by strains of sweet music and, looking out, they saw a band of children in shining Edgars Club @ 5 years
garments approaching the house. They were playing on golden harps, and the air was full of melody.
Suddenly the Stranger Child stood before them; no longer cold and ragged, but clad in silvery light. His soft voice said: “I was cold and you took Me in. I was hungry, and you fed Me. I was tired, and you gave Me your bed. I am the Christ Child, wandering through the world to bring peace and happiness to all good children. As you have given to Me, so may this tree every year give rich fruit to you.” So saying, He broke a branch from the fir tree that grew near the door, and He planted it in the ground and disappeared. But the branch grew into a great tree, and every year it bore wonderful golden fruit for the kind children.c December 2019
