Condolences Our Heartfelt Those we love remain with us For love itself lives on, And cherished memories never fade Because a loved one’s gone. Those we love can never be More than a thought apart, Far as long as there is memory, They’ll live on in the heart.

Although no words can really help to ease the loss you bear, Just know that you are very close in every thought and prayer. Those we love don’t go away, They walk beside us every day, Unseen, unheard, but always near, Still loved, still missed and still very dear. Edgars Zimbabwe would like to extend our condolences to all those Club Members and Edgars Customers who have lost their loved ones. We sincerely hope that the help we were able to offer through the Edgars Hospital Cash Plan and Mi-Way helped ease your burden. We have lost many members in the past 6 years. May their souls Rest In Eternal Peace. April-May 2020

t’s that time of year again where we celebrate our birthday. Issa Birthday. Edgars Club is now 6 years old and we are proud of the little baby that is now all grown up. I love celebrating. Especially during times like these where the is so much uncertainity in the world because of events like Corona Virus. Being dubbed the worst flue this side of the millenium it has left us a little more sensitive to time and activity. During any downtime you may have with a flue or cold make sure you pick up your gadget and open up Edgars Club.

April -May 2020 – Marketing Desk

t’s been 6 years of bringing you The Club, and it seems just like yesterday when we worked on bringing back the 1st edition presented to you in April 2014. Whilst we want to celebrate this milestone, it is difficult to ignore the ongoing global pandemic and outbreak of Covid-19. Our lives have changed overnight, with the outbreak of the Corona virus whose source emerged in Wuhan China, towards the end of 2019. We have seen the virus come into Africa early this year and spread like veldfire. We can only be grateful that we have access to information from 1st world countries through social media platforms, the April-May 2020

internet and technology at large. The experience we have seen from 1st world countries is but a warning for us to take heed of the advice we have been given and to stay safe through unconventional methods; mainly social distancing and maintaining high standards of hygiene. As a business, we urge our customers and stakeholders to take all precautions as advised by health authorities. We are playing our part by ensuring we continuously clean and sanitize all our service points, stores and offices and uphold high standards of cleanliness at all times. We urge you our customers to make use of available online platforms to pay your instalments, remind-

ing you to keep your Hospital Cash Plan up to date as it will lapse the moment you miss an instalment. This is the time when products such as these protect us in the unfortunate event we or our loved ones fall sick. If you haven’t done so already, please add dependents onto the Hospital Cash Plan – there are now tiered options to allow you to select an option that works for your pocket. Get more information about the Edgars Hospital Cash Plan and benefits on page 12. We pray our families are spared of this deadly virus and that as a nation we come out stronger.. hat happens when (5) five women gather around for a worthy cause? You are guaranteed of magical transformation. They are not your typical everyday women, queens in their own spaces. S

INIKIWE KADEMAUNGA Tell us about yourself? My name is Sinikiwe Kademaunga, I am 26, turning 27 in July this year. I was born in Chitungwiza but grew up in Gandanzara, Rusape .We are (5) five in my family and am the baby of the house. I have very supportive siblings. I went to Saint Faith’s for my primary and High school. I studied Social work at the University of Capetown in South Africa. I am a April-May 2020

motivational speaker and life coach. Growing up was really normal for me I really had a very good experience. I grew up in a very loving home and I was raised by my grandmother. My sister joined us so that she would help take care of me. My grandmother treated me like a normal child. It was really difficult for my family to accept that I was born with a disability and my mum was blamed for it. My parents were on the verge of divorce and so my grandmother offered to take care of me. That`s how I ended up living with my grandmother. At what point did you realize that you were different from other kids? When I started going to school that`s when I realized that I was different-society views disability differently. I remember the first day I walked into the classroom (that was at preschool), some were staring at me and others laughed at me. That`s when I realized that there was something really different about me. Because of that,

I developed this aggressive character, it was my defense mechanism. I used to beat other kids up. I was never bullied because of that aggressive trait How was it like going to a boys’ high school? High school was the most difficult time of my life. I went to an all-boys school .When I went to form one I was grieving, (that`s when I lost my grandmother). It was also the onset of my adolescence and a lot was happening to my body. I was going through a myriad of challenges. We were only two girls in my class and the other girl didn`t have any form of disability. She used to get attention from the boys and it really affected my confidence. What are you passionate about? Am passionate about changing mindsets, especially those people who feel that it`s not possible because of how they look, their situation or their family background. I believe you can be whoever you set your mind to be and that`s the message Edgars Club @ 6 years

that I share on the different platforms that I get to be on. What is your greatest achievement? My disability has been my strength, instead of inhibiting me it has opened up doors for me. My greatest achievement was receiving an International award -Women Pioneering Leader accolade that I got from India. This is an award for women making an impact in their communities. Describe yourself in three words: Am strong, fun loving and very accommodating. What do you love doing the most, considering that, we have seen you shopping in our store quite a number of times? I love shopping. When am stressed I just go shopping it`s therapeutic. Am praying that my bank account will allow me to shop more often. What is your dream? I want to run a confidence and etiquette school, where young people come to boost their confidence April-May 2020

and unleash their potential. Your favorite memory? When I was at Jairos Jiri, I used to look forward to going home for the holidays. My grandmother would take me for the holidays-It meant just spending time with her. If you were given super powers what would you change? First thing would be people`s attitude. If people`s attitudes are transformed then it means that everything flows seamlessly. Would also change the infrastructure so that it`s all inclusive-also caters for disabled people. One thing that I have realized is that, in Zimbabwe we are still lagging behind in terms of how we view disability. Any word of advice to our readers? Let`s all be inclusive and always keep people with disabilities in mind. If we are all inclusive we will enable disabled people to participate equally in the activities that are happening in the community. We will curb the cycle of disabled peo-

ple begging as they will have access to all facilities. Last but not least, you have to be norm breaker. In life you will always find a reason to give up because the world is not always in our favor. There is nothing that is impossible, as long as you work towards it. PAULINE VONGAI DANA Tell us about yourself My name is Pauline Vongai Dana. I am 30 years old and we are four in my family, (2) boys (2) girls. [I] Spent most of my childhood in Marondera until I moved to Harare .I did my secondary education at Langham girls High then went to All Souls Mission. I studied for my undergraduate degree, a Bachelor of Social sciences and Sociology at Africa University, and have been working as a banker for the past (8) years. right now Describe yourself in three words? I’m adventurous, people loving and very patient What`s your Hobby? Biking is my adrenalin hobby. But I love swimming watching moviesthose movies that have too much action. I love guns, I love action but above all I love biking What or who inspired you to be a biker? Growing up I had a fascination for things that involved adrenalin. Having two brothers meant I would get in trouble with my dad because I used to get scars most of the times. Another thing that tapped into the adrenalin junkie in me was the presidential motorcade. Whenever I saw motorcade outriders speeding on the road, past me, I would be intrigued and added it to my bucket list. One day when I was attending a sporting event at college, some bikers came along and I approached them. As April-May 2020

club

it turned out, they were recruiting and that’s how I joined the Biker boys It’s now over a year since I joined the team. Our President and the executive are very keen and strict on safety, getting the full knowledge about what it entails to be a biker and biking rules-and am now a certified class 3 driver.

downtime feature

The second challenge is, most people tend to get surprised when they see a woman on a bike and they try to get close just to verify. This endangers the biker and other motorists. Other motorists don`t respect or appreciate bikers .Our community needs to understand that bikers matter too. We are just using a different mode of Are there any challenges transport but we deserve associated with the sport? to be on the road. If you have noticed, an alarming Biking is a male domimajority of the unfortunated world and being nate accidents that involve a woman you get asked bikers are typically caused questions like, ‘’Why by other motorists are you venturing into male sports? Don’t you What are your make all have something else to break moments? do?” Initially my family What affects me at times is was really hesitant about losing someone that is on biking. I remember one my biking team. I have lost of my aunts used to call two friends since I joined me an organ donor due the biking world. This sets to the risky nature of the you back a bit and really sport. I explained to them affects you when you lose that it`s not only about someone close. You then riding a bike there is safety start questioning yourself involved and we abide by and start thinking, Is it these rules. Am fortunate worth it? Should I stop? now that my family sort At the end of the day you of understands me and realize that it`s your life whenever they see bikers that you are living. won`t do things that you love and enjoy. Your best memory? We recently did a world relay and the funny thing is that, day before we went to meet the first lady I told the other ladies about how I wished to escort the First lady. One of the bikers heard us discussing that and they made it happen. We were given an opportunity to escort the first lady. For me this has been my high moment and really enjoyed it How would you say that being a biker has impacted your life? It has not only taught me to be very cautious (not that I wasn’t very cautious on the road,) and I also to respect other people on the road. Whether it`s a messenger bike or it`s someone doing deliveries, I feel I need to look out for them. The biking world teaches you to love and appreciate people because you have people from different cultures, backApril-May 2020

grounds and races. So you learn to interact with different people and to make friends and family. If you were given super powers for a day, what’s the one thing you’d change? If I was given super powers I would make sure that people love and respect everyone .I believe once you possess these virtues, there is no time to hate each other and all these unfortunate things that are happening won’t be there. There would be so much love there won’t be any time to hate each other. Any advice for aspiring bikers? I know a lot of people aspire to be bikers, but there are a lot of fears and prejudices associated with the sport-Go for it!!Ensure that you have enough protective gear in the event you fall or someone knocks you over. (Lol... we don’t call it falling, we call it looking at the world

from a different level.) Live your life to the fullest. Life is about being daring. Do what makes you happy. If you are going to be afraid, you won’t be able to do the things you actually love. It means you are not fulfilling your purpose. SITHEMBISO MUTUKURA Tell us about yourself My name is Sithembiso Mutukura and am 23 years old. Currently I hold these positions, Vice president for Partners for success, Current Provincial coordinator for Alive Albinism Initiative. Apart from assuming these leadership roles in 2018, I was crowned Queen for Miss Albinism Zimbabwe in 2018. I have also worked for big cosmetic brands, as a model with Black Opal and Vault Cosmetics. I also did beauty and fashion shoots with photographers such as Alice Mann from the UK, Paul Mann from Sandton, Charming Images and Kendrick Francis. I was also among the panel of judges for Miss Winter (2018) and For Miss UZ (2019) What are you passionate about? We all aspire to be great leaders .When I became a junior councilor that was and still is my best memory. I was the first one to be chosen. According to the mayor, my application letter came up tops among all students from different schools. In 2018 I scooped the Best Model at the Zimbabwe Models Awards, also another great memory. Who inspires you? My mum Mrs. Edith Mutukura. She is hardworking, raised us single-handedly, put food on the table, clothed us and sent us all to school without ever complaining. To raise funds for our general upkeep, she`d work as a maid or in the fields, crocheting and even ventured into poultry projects. Her tenacity and hard work inspires me to be the woman I am

downtime feature

If you were given super powers for a day, what would you change? I`d do away with gender stereotyping and discrimination. Making sure that they never exist. What is your dream? I love working with marginalized/vulnerable groups particularly children from all walks of life (those with mental, physical, learning disabilities, those in conflict with the law, those in need of care etc.) and women. My dream is to be a UN ambassador for women & children-linking them to the resources they need, creating awareness programs to empower them. I’ll be an advocate: speaking on their behalf for their rights to be realised, for justice, for equity, for non-abusive communities. Any word of advice to our readers? How many are you in your family, any kids) My name is Monalisa Sibanda I was born in 1983 and am 37 years old. From my mother`s first marriage, we are two girls. My mother remarried and had (3) kids (2) boys and (1) girl. From my father`s second marriage I have 2 more siblings. I come from a blended family, so in essence we are 7 in my family My mother died in 1992 when I was (9) nine and I was raised by my grandmother in Mabvuku, I did my primary education at Mabvuku Primary School then proceeded to Tafara High school though I only managed to study up to form (2) two. Describe yourself? Intelligent, resilient, beautiful, fearless, strong, God-fearing woman. What are your hobbies? April-May 2020

club

My hobbies are going to church, watching TV and attending boxing tournaments. Who or what inspired you to be a boxer? My mother`s gruesome murder at the hands of the man she loved led me to be a boxer. She was beaten and burnt to death by my stepmother. Her vulnerability and inability to defend herself drove me to be a boxer. Fortunately I had the opportunity to meet people from different walks of life and they changed my worldview-in terms of how I regarded my boxing skills. I received counselling, and no longer viewed using my fists as a defensive armor but as a way to earn a living. Are there any challenges associated with the sport? With any sport there are pros and cons. Generally the challenges that are faced range from sexual abuse to discrimination .If you are not strong enough you will not achieve your goals.

downtime feature One has to be resilient to break the status quo in sporting activities.

How has boxing impacted your life? There are quite a number of life lessons that I have learnt from boxing. To be successful you need to be fit and I lead a healthy lifestyle in and outside the gym. My confidence levels have skyrocketed. Boxing has helped me to grow as an athlete as well as a person. If you were given super powers for a day what would you change (be it in boxing or society as a whole?) I would build a center that caters for the less privileged especially street kids. The Center `s main focus would be to transform their lives in different ways and equip them with life skills, so that they become better people. What are you passionate about? What is your dream? To represent Zimbabwe in more international fights and bring more world titles home. My dream is to be a double World Boxing Champion, fitness trainer and a role model in the country. Someone who can transform other people lives, through advocating for women`s rights. In addition to that I also want to own a Sports Centre with Academy, Gym, Counselling Office, Church and Clinic.

Any words of advice to aspiring boxers or to our readers? I don`t believe in shortcuts, I believe in taking the high road. Do not let your current situation hinder you from achieving your dreams. So to all women, don`t sacrifice your future, health or life to achieve your goals easily. Be futuristic - think long term. ‘Fight’ for your life, work hard, pray more - Jesus is the answer. here’s one print that’s dominating the fashion world, and that’s checks. You’ll find the design frequently used on blazers, shirts, pants - well almost everything, and the detail has graduated from suit sets to asymmetrical tops and breezy skirts. It’s 2019, and plaid shows no signs of checking out. Especially not after Burberry revived its signature check with a vengeance this season. Why not pick up a gallant Prince of Wales check suit? Whether pencil skirt or slip dress, we’ll happily take the check this year. It’s time to be bold and mix the pattern with your other favorites e.g. florals.

Next grocery store run, be sure to place these top three dietfriendly items in your cart: balsamic vinegar (it adds a pop of lowcal flavor to veggies and salads), in-shell nuts (their protein and fiber keep you satiated), and fat-free plain yogurt (a creamy, comforting source of protein). Plus, Greek yogurt also works wonders as a natural low-calorie base for dressings and dips—or as a tangier alternative to sour cream. Talk about a multitasker!

Also make sure the sneaks are a little roomy—enough so that you can wiggle your toes, but no more than that. SPF PROTECTION If your skin would normally burn after 10 minutes in the sun, applying an SPF 15 sunscreen would allow you to stay in the sun without burning for approximately 150 minutes (a factor of 15 times longer). This is a rough estimate that depends on skin type, intensity of sunlight and amount of sunscreen used. SPF is actually a measure of protection from amount of UVB exposure and it is not meant to help you determine duration of exposure.

TALK BACK TO YOUR INNER VOICE. Everyone has an inner voice, i.e. the way you talk to yourself in your head or out loud. But sometimes that voice can be cruel—even though it’s ultimately dictated by you. It can tell you that you’re a failure or convince you to stress about something that you have absolutely no control over. Most people have a loud inner critic which makes their life more stressful.Learning to have a reassuring and soothing inner voice can make a big difference in improving your mental health. Obviously that’s easier said than done, but here’s a good place to start: When your inner voice is giving you really crappy freedback and advice, stop and consider how you would talk to your best friend in this situation. Then try to adjust your inner voice to talk like that. club

KNOW THE SIGNS The symptoms of infection for the new coronavirus are often similar to those of other respiratory virus infections, such as influenza. Symptoms can include fever, cough, or shortness of breath. Most people will only have mild symptoms, but some can become very sick. When person-to-person spread has occurred, it is thought to have happened mainly via respiratory droplets

produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes, similar to how influenza and other respiratory pathogens spread. If you think you may have been exposed to a person with COVID-19 and have symptoms, before going to a doctor’s office or emergency room, call ahead and tell them about your symptoms and any recent travel. KEEP THINGS CLEAN Preventative measures are your first line of defense. The best way to protect yourself from COVID-19 is to practice good hygiene and to make these recommendations part of your routine: Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to

PERSONAL RISK: CORONA VIRUS There isn’t yet a vaccine but various teams of scientists across the globe are in the process of developing a vaccine to protect against COVID-19. There also isn’t a specific treatment yet available, although many people will recover from mild infections following rest and fluids. Those who go on to develop pneumonia will have their symptoms managed and treated. April-May 2020

Home Buzz

We take a look what home decor must haves and new trends If you don’t have a grand foyer—or you do but it SPRUCED ENTRY needs some love–introduce a small console table. For a formal yet modern aesthetic, opt for a traditional table and then hang modern abstract art above it. Then lean some portraits against the wall for a laidback take on the gallery wall. In a particularly small room, a high ceiling is not desirable. Making the room look taller just calls attention to how narrow it is. Therefore, to make the room feel more spacious, you can use the same ceiling paint trick in reverse. Paint the ceiling a darker color than the walls, and it will make the ceiling seem lower – which in turn will visually push the walls outward.

FAKE IT ‘TIL YOU MAKE IT Do something groovy on the actual steps! The bolder you go, the bigger the smile when you see them. Here, a painted on runner by Annie Sloan looks just like a carpet.

PILLOWS Pillows throughout your home serve two purposes. One, if they are chosen correctly, they can really punch-up the elegance factor. Two, they provide your guests with a little extra comfort on the couch, and offer a cozy, layered feeling to your rooms. The comfort aspect speaks for itself, that is, if you choose pillows that are large enough to rest on, and soft. Speaking of size, you want to avoid the standard 12 to 18 inches for a throw pillow. Instead, choose something larger, such as a 22-inch pillow cover stuffed with 24-inch inserts. Large, overstuffed pillows create a very plush, elegant appearance—and don’t skimp on the pillow inserts, down-filled is the only way to go.

Civil engineering careers are both rewarding and challenging and can involve construction, design and management, depending on your interests and specialist knowledge. This career option often involves many aspects of design and architecture, allowing you to express your creative side and explore innovative new ideas, whilst also analyzing data and technology. Civil engineers need a good knowledge of design and construction methods as well as health and safety

matters. Civil engineering careers generally split into the roles of a consulting civil engineer and a contracting civil engineer. The role of a building control surveyor is generally suited to civil engineering students but is open to engineering students of all disciplines. Building control surveyors consider areas of health and safety to ensure building regulations and other regulations are monitored when buildings are designed and constructed. They also offer advice when buildings do not meet these regulations and will make visits to the construction site at different stages to make sure that the work is being correctly carried out. F I N D I N G A M E N TO R

Mentors share their life and work experience to help you make important decisions.

A

mentor is someone who gives you advice about life and work. They are usually older than you. You can have a mentor through a formal mentoring program. You can also have an informal mentor, who is someone you already know. Mentors share their life and work experience to help you make important decisions. club

April-May 2020

What a mentor can do for you

A mentor can give you: 1. advice based on their experience 2. tips for increasing your skills 3. information about an industry or job 4. encouragement and support to pursue or create opportunities 5. someone to bounce ideas off.

You don’t have to follow the same job path as your mentor. But it can be useful to find out what they did, why they did it and what the results were of taking this path.

How to work with a mentor: When you ask

someone to be your mentor, tell them clearly what you hope to get from the relationship.

Edgars Club @ 6 years

You should discuss the type of relationship you will have with your mentor. Topics you can cover include: 1. how often you’ll meet 2. where you’ll meet, and for how long 3. what your mentor expects from you 4. what you expect from your mentor 5. rules for getting in contact with each other – for example, you might want to be contacted by email and not phone 6. how you’ll end the arrangement when one of you decides to stop. Mentoring relationships can be done regularly in person. Or you can just catch up on the phone or via the web once in a while for a casual chat.

How to find an informal mentor: Your men-

tor should be someone you respect and can learn from. It could be: 1. a person at your work 2. a teacher or lecturer April-May 2020

club

3. someone you know through friends or family. 4. You can also approach someone you don’t know and ask them to be your mentor.

The most important thing is to find someone who: 1. you trust to give you good advice 2. will respect your privacy 3. will listen to you 4. will support and encourage you. It’s best not to choose your parent or boss as a mentor. You could find it hard to be honest about your feelings. You should find a neutral mentor who can listen and provide unbiased advice. A mentor doesn’t have to be in the same job or even the same industry you are interested in. You might choose someone who has experience and knowledge of a particular area or skill, such as time management or communication skills.

downtime teen talk Common misconceptions of mentoring

There is a lot of misunderstanding about how mentoring works, including how to begin a relationship with a mentor. Here are some of them: 1. Mentoring is about me. 2. I need to wait for a mentor to find me. 3. Being mentored is more passive than active. 4. I need to ask someone to mentor me upfront. Face it: Everything you know about mentoring may be wrong. It’s time to start seeking out a mentor the right way. Find someone you want to be like Don’t just find someone who has a job you want or a platform that you covet. Find someone that is like you, someone with a similar set of strengths and skills you want to emulate. Otherwise, you’ll just end up frustrated.

The Milkmaid & Her Pail P

atty the Milkmaid was going to market carrying her milk in a Pail on her head. As she went along she began calculating what she would do with the money she would get for the milk. “I’ll buy some fowls from Farmer Brown,” said she, “and they will lay eggs each morning, which I will sell to the parson’s wife. With the money that I get from the sale of these eggs I’ll buy myself a new dimity frock and a chip hat; and when I go to market, won’t all the young men come up and speak to me! Polly Shaw will be that jealous; but I don’t care. I shall just look at her and toss my head like this.” As she spoke she tossed her head back, the Pail fell off it, and all the milk was spilt.
