dgars stores celebrates decades of clothing Zimbabwe, and giving opportunity for the local industry in the clothing retail sector to continue operating. This year marks the 2nd edition of the “Edgars Zimbabwe Local Designers’ Initiative”, which launched in March 2016 as a talent-seeking and development program for local clothing and accessory designers. The promotion is open to designers residing in Zimbabwe or of Zimbabwean nationality residing in other countries, who will gain skills that will be invaluable to their careers, from being groomed in the artistry of garment construction, all the way through to learning how to market and sell their products. With each edition, 3 clothing designers are selected out of the competition entries. Adjudicators select the 3, and award them with cash prizes and most importantly, an opportunity to develop their skills further at our manufacturing factory in Bulawayo – Carousel. In 2016, we celebrated the launch edition with Sekai Sandamu and her Kaisan range, Heather Madlabuta with DVJ and Kuda Chihungwa with K7 who launched their brands and sold them in-store. The product received phenomenal reviews from our customers with some items selling out within hours of landing on the shop floor. This year we celebrate Afro Chique by Salome Jere, Maison Du Lorrain by Tawana Nyamupingidza and Hypnotique by Thandi Mguquka (featured in the Fashion Trend Alert). The 3 ladies were stationed at Carousel clothing factory in Bulawayo for a 3 month period and after completing training, have 3 exceptional ranges to offer our female customers. Their product hits stores this October and will be sold at the Edgars Stanely House branch in Harare as well as Edgars Cnr J. Moyo & 8th in Bulawayo. The ranges boast of exotic summer colors, lovely fabrication as well as surprise features which give each garment a unique edge. We hope you are customers will be as excited about these new ranges as we are. As Edgars we are investing in local talent because that is what we believe will re-build the clothing and fashion industry in this country. There is a lot of skill and raw talent out there and we are excited to be part of the initiative to bring that out, and showcase these capabilities to the nation. For us, it’s a celebration of who we are as Zimbabweans. We are and forever will be Edgars! leaders in this field and it is our resolve to remain so. c

4C Hair

How to manage your hair type

T

ype 4c hair doesn’t get enough love. There are a few dedicated Instagram pages and brands focusing on 4c hair but in general it is are under represented. It can be hard to find infomation on how to properly take care of this curl pattern of hair. Here are some tips to help you manage your type 4c hair, and type 4 hair in general since a lot of women with 4c have a mix of other type 4 textures. Some people have type 4c with some patches of 4a mixed in.

1

. Moisture Is Key

Type 4 hair can be very dry and needs a lot of moisture, espe-

cially 4c hair. Before you pile on the leave-in conditioners, moisturising cream and oils, it’s important to know that water is key in keeping your hair moisturised. Water is absorbed into the strands and these other products lock it in to keep hair moisturised. This is why water based moisturisers work best for our hair, but they are not enough. The L.O.C. Method works best in keeping my hair moisturised. This involves applying a water-based Leave-In Conditioner to soaking wet hair, followed by an Oil to lock it in, and a butter-based Cream for extra moisture. You just have to find products that work nicely

together without leaving residue or flaking. Water is not only your best friend externally but internally as well, so drink up for healthy hair, nails and skin.

2

. Do Not Comb Your

Hair While Dry

Unless you want breakage. Although our hair is very strong, it is also very fragile. It’s easy for our hair to tangle since our strands are so tightly coiled and close knit. Combing through these tangles while your hair is dry will cause unnecessary breakage. It’s best to comb 4c hair while soaking wet, using a conditioner with a lot of

slip (allows the comb to easily glide through). You’ll be able to comb through your hair more easily and will only lose the hair that naturally sheds out of our head daily.

3

. Less Manipulation

= Less Breakage

Speaking of combing 4c hair, it’s best not to comb too much. Combing your hair every day will lead to breakage. Create styles that last at least a week and don’t require too much manipulation like finger coils, finger shingles, twist outs and perm rod sets. Some naturalistas wash and style their hair every 7 to 14 days and only comb while styling. In between styles its recommended not to comb hair, just use a pick to lift the roots if your hair gets flat from sleeping on it. Less manipulation allows your hair to flourish and grow.

even if you have the same texture. Cater to your curl pattern and don’t expect your hair to look exactly like that tutorial you watched.

5

. Your Hair Is

Beautiful

4c hair has a history of being “bad hair” and a lot of women with type 4c hair claiming that their hair is too hard to take care of and they wished their hair was

and it’s big and fluffy like cotton, or shingle it for a head full of tight coils. The options are endless once you embrace your texture and learn how to take care of your hair. c

HEALTHY HAIR QUIZ

1

. When combing and styling my hair I notice a. Small pieces of hair on the sink or in the comb when I am done b. A few pieces of hair but mostly longer strands of shed hair c. No breakage, only shed hair . When I touch my hair it feels a. Dry and brittle b. Soft but it could be more moisturized c. My hair feels completely moisturized . Look at the ends of your hair. What do you notice? a. Split ends and or single strand knots on many strands b. A few splits or knots here and there c. None of the above . Which of the following best describes your hair growth? a. I can tell my hair is growing but it seems to stay the same length b. My hair appears to grow slowly c. My hair is growing but I would like to retain more length or continue to maintain the length I have . How would you describe you hair routine or hair regimen? a. Regimen, what’s that? b. I have a regimen but it needs to be improved c. I am happy with my hair regimen but I’m looking to adjust it or to try new products

. Cater To

Your Curl Pattern

“How did you get your hair to curl like that?” That has to be the question that people with 4c hair usually get. You can use methods to enhance your curl pattern like finger shingling, but you cannot manipulate your curl pattern without chemicals- with the exception of perm rods and other rollers where your hair takes the shape of the roller. Your hair will never look like anyone else’s because everyone’s hair is different,

Home remedies for thinning hair

B

oth men and women are plagued by a common problem these days – a receding hairline. This problem can be attributed to factors like unhealthy lifestyles, nutritional deficiencies, allergies, hormonal imbalances, poor hair care and also genetics. There are a plethora of modern treatments and techniques available that promise to help you re-grow your crowning glory. However, the consequences of these treatments are mostly adverse and the benefits are marginal. If you wish to have a thick and voluptuous mane, natural home remedies are the best way forward. There are effective household tips that can easily fix hair thinning problems. Given below are some natural home remedies for thinning hair

treatment that have no side-effects.

Thinning Hair Remedies

1

Massage your scalp with this gel and leave it on for 30 minutes. Rinse off with warm water. You must also consume Aloe Vera juice everyday early in the morning to promote hair growth.

2

. EGGS: Eggs are a rich source of protein and sulphur. Frequent protein treatment is crucial for a thick, strong mane. Take an egg white and mix it with one table spoon of olive oil to form a paste. Apply this on the entire scalp and hair. Leave it on for about 20 minutes and wash off

thoroughly with cold water using your favourite shampoo. You can use this remedy weekly to flaunt fuller hair.

3

This remedy is sure to give your tresses a healthy and voluptuous look.

4

Besides being good for your hair,

5

druff and promote hair growth.

6

8

. GREEN TEA: Green tea is loaded with antioxidants that work well in treating hair loss and initiate new growth as well. Brew green tea leaves in a cup of water and allow it cool slightly. Apply this on the scalp and leave it on for an hour. Rinse thoroughly afterwards for silky and healthy hair. These natural thinning hair remedies, when used regularly, will give improved hair thickness and texture within weeks of their use. Besides using these remedies, it is also important to follow a healthy lifestyle with good eating habits and adequate intake of water. So, worry no longer about your lack of hair and start dreaming about the amazing hairstyles you will flaunt with your newer, healthier hair! c

Finance Tips

A

re you finding yourself struggling to reach the next payday? Are you living from paycheck to paycheck? Are you constantly getting a loan to enable you survive until the next payday? Are you finding yourself with no money to spend and you don’t know how you used it? If the answer to one of these is yes you are not alone a greater percentage of people in the country are also living like this and this rarely is an income problem its mostly a budgeting problem. When people hear the word Budgeting they shriek ,they don’t want to prepare a personal budget they make excuses so .Cash flow planning is another term we can use for those who don’t like the term budgeting . Cash flow planning is the ability to track and know where your money is coming from where it’s going, what expenses are necessary how you are going to use the money that you have and that which will be left. In short to budget equals having money as you have control and power on how you are spending it whilst not budgeting equals not having any money. Excuses given for not

EXCUSES for NOT Budgeting Written by Ashel Moyo

budgeting /cash flow planning Budgeting is scary: Stop with the nonsense, we are tired of you always blaming the system and yet when it’s time to take control of your financial life you are the first to chicken out. There is nothing scary in knowing how you are spending your money it is actually scary to just go throughout the month without knowing how you are spending the money a bit like playing Russian roulette with 4 out of 6 chambers with bullets. There is nothing scary in fact you will be shocked to find out where your money has been doing as soon as you finish your first real budget.

I am not so good with numbers: This is one of the most common responses given by many individuals; here is a simple test for you if you are in this bracket: Lucy has 3 buns. She is hungry she eats 1 bun. How many buns does Lucy have left? If your answer is 2 buns congratulations you have the skills to do a personal budget. I will start budgeting after.. Procrastination in the world of personal finance is simply just saying l’m not going to follow through on

it. Look at you now you have been delaying this well for more than 2 years now or more. If you plan on living from payday to payday for the rest of your life well it’s OK you can start budgeting after…….. However if you plan to get hold of your financial life right now seems to be a pretty good “after.”

I don’t have any money left to budget: A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it all went each month. So in essence the reason you don’t have any to budget is simply because you are not budgeting. I don’t have time to do a budget: Well this is nonsense as we are speaking right now yesterday you took out one and half hours to watch a movie and in addition to that you watched that football match. When you start doing a budget it may take time maybe an hour or more but after the first month the time you take will shrink as you gain experience and take control , by the time you are at around five months in budgeting it might only take 10 to 20 minutes to budget. Start budgeting take control of money. c

SUMMER’S D O O F T C E F R PE everyone at the Finding it hard to please These easy food dinner table this summer? recipes created eal choices and easy main m in mind. with the whole family

Y

ou know summer’s the perfect time to switch to flip-flops, but did you know it’s also the right time to change your diet? Being outdoors more often— and sweating—ups your risk for health problems such as dehydration, skin sensitivities, and vitamin and mineral deficiencies. The simple (and delicious) solution? Eat local, in-season fruits. Their nutrients are at their peak in the summer. Watermelon. As its name implies, this fruit is a hydration hero, and fluids are exactly what you need when the heat is on. Watermelon’s high water content keeps you cool and hydrated. That same high water content will also keep you feeling full, which could curb cravings. As an added summer bonus, Watermelon also contains lycopene, which protects skin cells from sun damage,. Oranges. The sweet citrus fruit is rich in potassium, a nutrient that’s crucial in the summer. You lose potassium through sweat, which puts you at risk for muscle cramps. Eating oranges replenishes your supply and keeps muscle cramps away. Oranges are also about 80% water, so popping a few juicy slices will keep you hydrated during your sweatiest summer days. Yogurt. Protein-packed, portion-controlled and easy to tote in your beach bag (just freeze a cup before you go, so it stays cool until you’re ready to snack), yogurt is made for summer eating. The protein satisfies your growling tummy, which will keep you from overloading on salty, high-calorie snacks at your braai. Our

recommendation: brands that are low in fat and high in protein, like natural or Non-Fat Greek yogurt. It has twice the protein of regular low-fat yogurt. Yogurt also adds a dose of probiotics, beneficial bacteria that keeps your digestive system running smoothly. Celery and Fennel. Celery and fennel act as diuretics, helping you lose excess water weight without causing dehydration. How? The ingredients in these two veggies stimulate your kidneys, causing them to flush waste and extra fluid from your body, which beats bloat in your tummy. Blackberries and Raspberries. These berries are great sources of fibre. They’re very high in vitamin C and have 8 grams of fibre per cup. Apples and Pears. These foods are high in fibre. Keep the skin on apples and pears for the maximum nutritional impact. Be sure to wash thoroughly before eating. Apricots, Peaches, and Nectarines. Fresh or dried, nectarines are a solid source of dietary fibre. Both nectarines and apricots are rich in vitamin A and the antioxidant beta-carotene, while peaches contain plenty of vitamin C. Dark, Leafy Greens: Leave steamed veggies behind and fill up on fresh, raw spinach and kale come summer to save your skin. Carotenoids in orange and darkgreen foods, which your body converts to vitamin A, protect skin from sun damage. They decrease sensitivity to UV light and mend flaky and dry skin, strengthening the skin’s defenses against damaging rays.

downtime home Some handy tips to consider when renovating your space.

That Paint Colour Looked Great Until You Got It Home. L E ight changes colour, so your lighting design — a top priority for any remodel — should help guide your colour choices. Here’s how. If you want to make your remodel project shine, finalize your lighting design before you select paint and carpet colours. The light you choose to illuminate tasks or set the mood will change the way you see colour throughout the room. The Robin’s Egg Blue you picked could look like Paris at Sunset under some kinds of light. It’s all determined by the way light and colours interact. Lightening designers encourage people to understand that the colour of an object won’t look the same 24 hours a day that’s why some people will end up saying, THE WAY WE “SEE” COLOUR PRIMARILY DEPENDS ON TWO THINGS: .The light that an object absorbs. Black absorbs all colours; white absorbs none; blue absorbs red. .How the light source works. Natural light (sunlight) changes throughout the day and is affected by a room’s location. Artificial light changes with the type of bulb you use.

1 2

HOW SUNLIGHT AFFECTS COLOURS: As the amount and angle of the sun changes, so will your room colours.“Natural light should always be considered when choosing colour for a space. North-facing rooms: Light in these rooms is cool and bluish. Bolder colours show up better than muted colours; lighter colours will look subdued. Use strong colours and embrace what nature has given. outh-facing rooms: Lots of high-in-the-sky light brings out the best in cool and warm colours.

S

Dark colours will look brighter; lighter colours will virtually glow. ast-facing rooms: East light is warm and yellowy before noon, and then turns bluer later in the day. These are great rooms for reds, oranges and yellows. est-facing rooms: Evening light in these rooms is beautiful and warm, while scant morning light can produce shadows and make colours look dull. ncandescents: The warm, yellow-amber light of these bulbs will make reds, oranges, and yellows more vivid, while muting blues and greens. luorescents: This flat and cool light enriches blues and greens. alogens: These white lights resemble natural light and make all colours look more vivid. Using halogens would make the shift from daylight to artificial light less jarring. ompact fluorescent lights (CFLs): CFLs can produce either a warm white, neutral, or bluish-white light. ight-emitting diodes (LEDs): You can buy warmer or cooler LEDs, and even “smart” LED bulbs whose colour you can control wirelessly. You can point to the colour of the sky in a picture at sunset and make the light bulb in the house be that same colour.

W

I F H

C L

TIPS FOR ACHIEVING THE COLOUR YOU WANT . Paint squares of primed drywall with samples of the colours you’re considering, and then move them around the room during the day. Apply at least two coats.

1

downtime home

2 3

. Evaluate samples of carpet during different daylight conditions. . Most contractors won’t hang lights before you paint, but you can get a colour approximation by placing a bulb you’ll be using in a floor or desk lamp. If you’re hyper-sensitive to colour or want a very specific look, ask your electrician to hang the lights, and then cover them carefully during painting. . Remember that natural and artificial light will work together during certain times of day, especially in summer when dusk lasts a long time. Turn on artificial lights even during daylight to see what your colours will look like. . Paint sheen also affects colour. Glossy finishes will reflect light and change the way the colour looks, whereas flat finishes are less reflective and allow colours to look truer under bright light. . Light-coloured walls can reflect the colours of bold carpets: A bright blue rug, for instance, can cast a bluish tone on a white wall.

4 5

6

GUIDE TO PAINT FINISHES There’s a basic rule of thumb to follow when choosing paint sheens: The higher the sheen, the higher the shine — and the higher the shine, the more durable it will be. Flat paint has no shine; high-gloss is all shine. In between are eggshell, satin, and semi-gloss, each with its own practical and decorative job to do. Here’s how to choose the right paint sheen for your painting job. igh Gloss: The most durable and easiest to clean of all paint sheens, high-gloss paint is hard, ultra-shiny, and light-reflecting. Think appliance-paint tough.High gloss is a good choice for area that sticky fingers touch — cabinets, trim, and doors. High-gloss, however, is too much shine for interior walls. And like a Spandex dress, high gloss shows every bump and roll, so don’t skimp on prep work. Practical application: kitchens, door, and window trim Durability: very high

H

S

emi-Gloss: Good for rooms where moisture, drips, and grease stains challenge walls. Also great

for trim work that takes a lot of abuse. Practical application: kitchens, bathrooms, trim, chair rails. Durability: high

S

atin: Has a yummy luster that, despite the name, is often described as velvety. It’s easy to clean, making it excellent for high-traffic areas. Its biggest flaw is it reveals application flaws, such as roller or brush strokes. Touch-ups later can be tricky. Practical application: family rooms, foyers, hallways, kids’ bedrooms. Durability: high

E

ggshell: Between satin and flat on the sheen (and durability) scale is eggshell, so named because it’s essentially a flat (no-shine) finish with little luster, like a chicken’s egg. Eggshell covers wall imperfections well and is a great finish for gathering spaces that don’t get a lot of bumps and scuffs. Practical application: dining rooms, living rooms Durability: medium

F

lat or Matte: A friend to walls that have something to hide, flat/matte soaks up, rather than reflects, light. It has the most pigment and will provide the most coverage, which translates to time and money savings. However, it’s tough to clean without taking paint off with the grime. Practical application: adults’ bedrooms and other interior rooms that won’t be roughed up by kids Durability: medium-low TIPS FOR CHOOSING THE RIGHT SHEEN If your paint color is dark and rich but you don’t want a super shiny effect, step down at least one level on the sheen scale. That’s because the darker and richer the paint color is, the more colorant it has, which boosts sheen. Ditto if you’re painting a large, sun-washed, or imperfect wall. The higher the sheen, the more defects will show. Adding sheen also adds to the cost, usually an extra dollar or two per litre as you step up on the sheen scale. c Source : houselogic

understand BREAST CANCER B

reast cancer is a kind of cancer that develops from breast cells. Breast cancer usually starts off in the inner lining of milk ducts or the lobules that supply them with milk. A malignant tumor can spread to other parts of the body. A breast cancer that started off in the lobules is known as lobular carcinoma, while one that developed from the ducts is called ductal carcinoma. The vast majority of breast cancer cases occur in females. This article focuses on breast cancer in women. Breast cancer is the most common invasive cancer in females worldwide. It accounts for 16% of all female cancers and 22.9% of invasive cancers in women. 18.2% of all cancer deaths worldwide, including both males and females, are from breast cancer. Breast cancer rates are much higher in developed nations compared to developing ones. There are several reasons for

The anatomy of a female breast Breast Anatomy normal scheme 1. Chest wall. 2. Pectoralis muscles. 3. Lobules (glands that make milk). 4. Nipple surface. 5. Areola. 6. Lactiferous duct tube that carries milk to the nipple. 7. Fatty tissue. 8. Skin.

this, with possibly life-expectancy being one of the key factors - breast cancer is more common in elderly women; women in the richest countries live much longer than those in the poorest nations. The different lifestyles and eating habits of females in rich and poor countries are also contributory factors, experts believe.

A mature human female’s breast consists of fat, connective tissue and thousands of lobules - tiny glands which produce milk. The milk of a breastfeeding mother goes through tiny ducts (tubes) and is delivered through the nipple. The breast, like any other part of the body, consists of billions of microscopic cells. These cells multiply in an orderly fashion - new cells are made to replace the ones that died. In cancer, the cells multiply uncontrollably, and there are too many cells, progressively more and more than there should be. Cancer that begins in the lactiferous duct (milk duct), known as ductal carcinoma,

TIME MANAGEMENT FOR TEENS

Tips and Tools for getting organized and on track for school and life.

A

t the beginning of school last year, 16-year-old Tarisai was invited to participate in several school activities. “I knew I didn’t have time to do them all,” she says, “so I chose the ones I knew I would really enjoy.” Tarisai practices a smart strategy for success in high school - she in control of her time. Homework. Music practice. Chores. School projects. Sports team. Part-time job. Friends. Dating. Throw in exams or proficiency tests, and the result can be major stress. Practically every teen has been stressed out with too much to do and too little time to do it in. One of the problems, as Tarisai

found, is that so many activities compete for one’s time. Teens who manage their time well have their personal favourite tips that work best for them, but all agree on one important strategy: Set priorities. For Tarisai and Edward, 16, school is number one. “If I have a test coming up,” Edward explains, “I’ll turn down an invitation from a friend—school work before fun.” Tarisai agrees. Like many teens, she doesn’t like the feeling of having an unfinished project hanging over her; it’s a major stressor. “Say I have a big project due in two days,” she says. “I would do the project first, then I can enjoy the time I spend with

my friends.” Tarisai also starts right away on her assignments. Edward tries to break down projects into small pieces and not tackle them all at once. Not so with 15-year-old Andy. School is a priority for him, also, but his style is a little different: “Most times I wait to finish things. I won’t put them off, but I don’t rush to do them. This seems to work well for me, though I know most people have a hard time doing that. And I make sure assignments are completed on time and thoroughly.” Andy reports that this tactic works well for him; he’s rarely overwhelmed or stressed out by upcoming assignments. He plans

out beforehand what he needs to complete, and he’s able to fit in a large class load, play piano and bass in a band, and spend at least one night a weekend with friends. The difference in these teens’ styles points out the importance of developing time management skills that work for the individual; one size doesn’t fit all. For example, one conventional time management tip is to write down everything in a master planner. But Tarisai has found that keeping different calendars for different purposes works best for her. She has one calendar for school, one for soccer practice, and another for dance, birthdays, student council meetings, and so on. Andy writes down homework assignments in a school planner, but says, “Most things I don’t need to write down because I have a good memory.” Teens should experiment with different strategies until they find what works for them. Most teens do find that keeping some form of written schedule is helpful. Activities that come at fixed hours and cannot be changed should be listed first. Classes, activities with fixed time periods, work, and sleep fall into this category. Teens have more flexibility in determining when to complete homework assignments, exams, and papers. Sleep is one area in which teens short change themselves. They need at least nine hours of sleep each night, but a recent studies show that teens averaged just 7.3 hours a night. The researchers also noted that students who had mostly A’s on their report cards averaged more sleep than those who received D’s and F’s. Inadequate sleep also can cause or aggravate stress. Getting enough sleep isn’t always a matter of merely scheduling sleep time— it’s also budgeting enough time to finish assignments. Some teens

stay up late to finish assignments because they misjudge how much time they take. A rule of thumb is to estimate how much time one thinks an assignment will take, then tack on another 25%.

Teens need to realize that time management strategies such as these won’t magically allow them to squeeze in everything they want to do. They must make choices on how to spend their time—back to priorities again. “It’s hard to say no,” says Tarisai, “but you have to if you want to manage your time. It’s better to be fully involved, for example, do your share for the club or group, than to just show up and not be prepared or do nothing. Make sure you have the time to contribute. It’s better to do well in fewer activities.” She advises time-stressed teens to drop some activities if they’re feeling it’s too much. Some people find the idea of managing their time restrictive. “I don’t want to turn into an efficiency robot,” they protest. But managing time doesn’t mean being controlled by a schedule; it means having control. Unexpected events happen, things take longer than anticipated, and new obligations continually pop up. Don’t schedule yourself too tightly. Leaving some time open to move activities around and for recreational and “down” time is crucial. Good time management skills are a proven buffer against academic stress and can help teens lead a more balanced life. Like any skills, people are not born with them. They have to practice. Encourage teens not to give up if they find themselves stressed out despite their efforts to manage their time. The key is to keep trying and try not to worry too much about it. The more you worry, the harder things will be.

TOP TIPS FOR SCHOOL WORK

. Budget enough time. For each project you undertake, calculate how long it will take to complete. Then tack on another 25% as a buffer against mistakes, interruptions, or unanticipated problems. . Set aside a time each day to study. Study in blocks of one hour. Take a five-minute break in-between. Use a kitchen timer or the alarm on your watch. . Look over your notes every day. Even if you don’t have homework or an upcoming exam, take five to ten minutes every day to look over your notes for each subject. This will help prevent having to cram before a test. . Write down assignments as soon as they are given.

. Study your hardest assignments first while you’re more alert. . Say no to social invitations if you have to study for an exam or complete a project. . Break large tasks into smaller, more manageable ones. If you have a paper to write, break it down into researching, outlining, and writing. . Beating Procrastination. Do the worst thing first. Study for your hardest class or do a chore you dislike to get it out of the way.. . Set up small goals. Need to clean your room? Focus on one bookshelf or one corner at a time. Reward yourself when you finish each goal. . Jump in! Stop waiting for the right moment or talking about what you’re going to do, and do it! c

How to enjoy being

a stay at home mum

Forget everything you’ve heard about stay-at-home moms. A new generation is starting their own businesses, blogging and working at home.

S

taying at home with your children can be one of the best gifts you can get, and give, but it’s easy to lose sight of how wonderful an experience it can be. Instead of falling into the complaining trap, adopt a few of these habits that highly effective (and sane) stay-at-home moms put into practice every day. No matter how thrilled you are to be with your kids, going from the boardroom to the playroom can be a drastic change. “Much of stay-at-home mothering is harder than any other job,” says Shannon Hyland-Tassava, Ph.D., author of The Essential Stay-at-Home Mom Manual: How To Have a Wondrous Life Amidst Kids and Chaos.” Can

you think of any other profession that has 24/7 shifts, no coffee or lunch breaks, and no vacation or sick days?” It sounds silly: get ready for the day. If you are a stay-at-home mom, you know all too well that this is simply not as easy for us as it is for the rest of the population. Do yourself a favour, though, and push through it. Go ahead and put on Sesame Street in the morning so you can get yourself ready for the day. You’ll simply feel better. Do not make your child/ren your entire identity. Find a hobby to do with them or during naps. Think of sewing, crafting, blogging, photography, guitar, running a 5K, writing, or painting.

Find an activity that’s yours and brings you joy, something you can invest in without pressure or competition and provides you fulfilling opportunities outside of finger paints and bubbles. Here is some advice to all the women making the transition from full-time professional to stay-athome-mom. Here are their 6 tips - and why they work. (Tip: They may work for all you full-time nannies too.)

1S. SET A SCHEDULE

uddenly the day is over and you haven’t showered, left the house or had an adult conversation. It’s easy to get depressed. Time can go quickly when there is no exter-

nal pressure to get things done and you don’t have a deadline. You need to structure your time so that you can use it productively while still allowing for flexibility. hy it works: A general schedule will make getting from 6 a.m. to bedtime a lot less stressful. It gives some shape to the day and tells kids what to expect -- kids love consistency. You might like to leave morning activities open but have set times for meals, naps, art projects, a trip to the library, a visit to the playground and watching a special TV show. Whatever the timeframe, consistent blocks of time each day and week will work in everyone’s favour.

W

NETWORK IN YOUR 2.INDUSTRY I

t’s essential that you talk to others in your line of work to vent, swap strategies, have a good laugh and realize that you’re all in the same boat on good days -- and bad. hy it works: Getting out of the house for any form of adult interaction will stave off loneliness and give you a support network. Stay-at-home motherhood can be extremely isolating, especially when your children are babies, or when you’re brand-new to SAHM-hood. We suggest: library story time, the playground, momand-toddler groups and classes, preschool drop-off and pick-up and school volunteering. Think about it like dating -- and start “picking up” moms with the best thing you have in common - cute kids!

. STRIVE

FOR GOOD ENOUGH

E

very professional has room to do better at their job, even moms, but you need to be realistic. Kids want TV, chicken nuggets and fries? Go ahead -- if it will make the next hour easier for you. If your kids are healthy, loved and taken care of, don’t doubt your ability. Work on being a great mom, not the perfect mom.

downtime parenting hy it works: Maintaining

hy it works: “You’ll never be a perfect mom, because there’s no such thing; but chances are your ‘job performance’ is plenty good enough.” The more you obsess over the right and wrong ways to parent, the more time you waste that you could be enjoying your children or coming up with a new way to spend rainy afternoons inside (shaving cream wall art anybody?). If on most days you can say you truly love your job and your kids, then you really can’t do any better than that.

HIRE A CO-WORKER, 4AKA, A NANNY .

I

t used to be that extended families all lived in the same house or on the same block. Childcare was just a holler away. Having MIL move in is probably not an option (or safe for your marriage). But neither is being a totally solo SAHM all week, and not giving yourself a break. hy it works: At the office, you worked with a team of people to get a job done. The same goes for your home. With an extra set of hands, there is someone else to wash the bottles, make meals and go down the slide for the 100th time. And you finally have a chance to take a nap, go to the gym or run some errands, peacefully. Sweet joy! Whether you hire a part-time nanny, housekeeper, Au Pair or find a great babysitter, you’ll find that the break and extra assistance helps you be a happier mom.

W

SOCIALIZE AFTER 5HOURS .

S

tep out of the role of mom: join a reading group, work with a charity, attend an art opening at the local library, or get a manicure with a friend. Do anything where people expect you to show up and it will serve as part of your motivation for getting out. Sprinkle these after-hours activities across the week -- like Monday and Thursday - to break up the week.

W

your adult identity outside of being a parent will stimulate your mind, body and give a boost to your self-esteem -- all of which will make you a better mom and partner. You’ll connect with fulfilling people, create a role outside of your home (Zumba superstar, book club regular), and energize yourself.

PAY YOURSELF 6N .

o, your kids won’t set up your direct deposit. And they won’t be praising you for your most recent project (finding that lost fire truck under the couch). So without a steady paycheck and an occasional sense of feeling undervalued, what’s to keep you from quitting? You need a “salary” -- as well as positive reinforcement. Remind yourself that you’re doing some of the most valuable work there is, even if you’re not getting paid for it. She also states that “Feeling undervalued comes from inner ambivalence, or a lack of validation from a spouse or partner.” hy it works: Any self-doubt is just making your job of SAHM more difficult. “You need to change the way you speak to yourself and start appreciating your own worth and hard work as a mom. It will actually make your job more fun.

W

Don’t feel shy in asking your partner as well as your kids for more appreciation -- a hug, a thank you, breakfast in bed. Getting paid can help you feel better about spending money without “making” it. Remember, you are doing a job. Payment can also come as an occasional treat like a weekend morning to yourself, a new pair of jeans, an extra day with a babysitter -- there are plenty of little ways you can feel rewarded.

If you’ve only got one day to see this jewel of the Adriatic, there are a few ground rules that you need to obey. From cruising the Grand Canal to taking tea on Piazza San Marco, Venice is home to a plethora of things to do.

A perfect day in

Venice, Italy

V

enice is such a treasure trove that it would be impossible to do it justice in just a day. Secondly, get started early and head to the principal sites before the huge crowds descend on them and make life unbearable. Thirdly, don’t try and walk everywhere. It will be exhausting, especially in August when the temperatures are at their highest. Invest in a day pass on the vaporetti (water buses) and use the traghetti (gondola ferries) whenever possible—they cost only 50 cents. Lastly, combine visits to key sites with places off the beaten track where you can catch your breath and relax. There are many hidden campos just a stone’s throw from the major tourist spots. HERE’S OUR GUIDE TO SPENDING ONE DAY IN VENICE: PIAZZA SAN MARCO: A good starting point is Piazza San Marco

(St. Mark’s Square) where you will have the chance to indulge in its splendor before the crowds converge on it around mid-morning. Napoleon called this place the ‘Finest dining room of Europe’ and the view from the Piazza certainly bears this out. Feast your eyes on the magnificence of the 900-year old Basilica di San Marco with its five beautiful ornate domes that evoke the merging of Romanesque and Byzantine architecture. On the left of the piazza is the Torre dell’Orologio (Moor’s Clock Tower) with its distinctive clock face and two moors standing on top and hammering the large bell on the hour. To the right is the Campanile, towering over the piazza and offering a panoramic view over Venice if you take the one minute lift ride to the top.

Moving through the Piazza San Marco and its two granite columns signifying the gateway to Venice is the magnificent Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale). Nicknamed “the wedding cake”, it is difficult not to appreciate the beauty of this building, dominating the waterway with its wonderfully ornate arcades and its façade covered in pink Verona marble and Istrian limestone. THE WATERFRONT: If you carry on along the waterfront past San Zaccaria on the Riva degli Schiavoni, you eventually arrive at a bridge leading to the Arsenale, the symbol of the Venetian Republic’s military strength from the 12th to 16th century. Although you can’t enter this military complex, the short walk is worthwhile just to see the wonderful triumphal arch

at the entrance, the Porta Magna, flanked by four marble lions. The café in the square outside is good place to take a breather and a coffee. From here, take the vaporetto to Ponte di Rialto (Rialto Bridge) along the Grand Canal and see the most important bridge in Venice. Rather than dwell too long on the bridge, turn right and descend into the Pescaria and Erberie, the fish and vegetable markets. The former is housed in an arcaded loggia and is filled with stalls selling every type of seafood imaginable including octopus, mussels, swordfish and sea bass as well as sea turtles, eels and crabs. The vegetable market is in the Campo della Pescaria next to the Grand Canal and bustles with locals and chefs shopping for every variety of fresh fruit and vegetables. Make sure, however, that you arrive before 12.00, when the market closes for the day. Sample the gondola and take the traghetto, next to the market, across the Grand Canal for the sum of 50 cents and head off to the Cannaregio district in the North East and the church of Madonna dell’Orto near the Canale delle Fondamenta Nove. Weave your way through alleyways, across bridges and savor the peace and tranquility of this area, much less frequented by the crowds. This was Tintoretto’s (1518-1594) local

church and he spent much of his working life here leaving a legacy of masterpieces including The Last Judgement, The Apparition of the Cross of St. Peter and The Martyrdom of St. Paul. He is buried near the altar and his home is nearby in
