ON YOUR WEDDING DAY

40

Not sure which direction to take for your bridal glam look? We have advice for you here. Find your beauty aesthetic with these five methods for African brides.

club

February 2019

1

. MAXIMIZE YOUR. MELANIN. If you looked at the beauty industry a few years ago, it was hard to find your perfect shade of foundation as a woman of color. But today, you don’t have to look far to get that flawless bridal glow. With brands like Fenty, Huda Beauty, Nars, Bobbi Brown, Black Opal and Makeup For Ever, shade ranges are diverse

to match your exact base color and undertone. Whether you’re hiring a makeup artist for the wedding day or like to apply makeup yourself, finding a foundation that provides the right amount of coverage is equally important. You’ll also need to consider a foundation’s formula along with your skin type. A dewier finish works better for dry skin, Edgars Club @ 4 years

look smart beauty whereas a matte finish is ideal for oilier skin. Switching this order is a surefire way to make your face look parched or greasy at the end of the night—and nobody wants that. Bonus tip: Colorcorrecting with peach and green concealers are key helpers in banishing blemishes and discoloration.

2

. ACCENT WITH BOLD COLORS.

Take a note from Nigeria’s wedding makeup and be a daring bride if you want. Deeper colors like plum, burgundy, chocolate and scarlet flatter melanin-rich skin tones. These vibrant hues work well when used as an eye shadow, blush or lipstick. Your skin’s undertone, along with your hair and eye color, will clue you in to how far you can go. What’s most important, however, is that you feel confident and beautiful with a bolder makeup look. To enhance your lovely face further, make sure to contour and highlight with golden and Edgars Club @ 4 years

bronze tones. Another option to consider for the African American bride who wants to stand out is a shimmery cut crease with strong eyeliner, which often complements darker skin and simpler bridal gowns. Bonus tip: Make sure your makeup artist gives you or you get your own blotting papers.Your makeup artist will know how to keep shininess at bay, but it doesn’t hurt to have some oil-absorbing sheets if your nerves are causing some excess sweatiness. Lipstick is the one makeup item you should carry throughout the night so you can touch up often with your shade of choice. Bonus points if it’s moisturizing and can do double-duty as a lip balm.

. OPT FOR “NO MAKEUP” MAKEUP. For low-key brides, achieving an effortless “I just woke up like this” look is a dream come true. The overall goal is to look like the best version of yourself, which provides

a timelessness you’ll appreciate when you look back at your wedding photos years later, according to celebrity makeup artist Melissa Hibbert. To create this look, an even canvas is key with subtle enhancements— meaning soft blush and an earth-toned smoky eye. Highlighting and contouring with products that are only a few shades different from your actual skin tone will add a pop to your features, while dark eyeliners and mascara define your eyes. Since the “no makeup” makeup look is so simple, you can incorporate some showstealing false eyelashes along with a pink-tobrown nude lipstick for extra glam. Bonus tip: Carry with you a Face Mist. One spritz of a high-quality face mist or makeup setter can do wonders—not only does it feel refreshing and calming for your skin, but it can help your makeup stay put too.

. DON’T FORGET SKINCARE. Wearing makeup is no reason to let your skin get rough. In fact, taking care of your natural complexion will allow any cosmetic you apply to go on smoother. Building a regimen tailored to your skin’s needs will help you look radiant long before you walk down the aisle. For daily maintenance, implement double cleansing to purify your skin and prep it for toners, serums and moisturizers. Adding a physical or chemical exfoliant you can use up to three times per week helps minimize common skin concerns like acne and hyperpigmentation. It’s also important to not skimp on SPF during the day—darker skin tones are not immune from the sun’s harmful UV rays. A sunblock with an SPF of 30 is more than enough to protect your skin. Furthermore, those who have troubled skin types should schedule an appointment with a licensed dermatologist club

or aesthetician at least a year before the wedding. It might sound like overkill, but seeing an expert sooner rather than later allows for skin-clearing treatments to be administered with adequate healing time. Just make sure the specialist you visit has experience working with darker skin tones.

What’s The Best Time Of Day To Work Out? Morning? Afternoon? Evening? Does it even matter?

I

t’s a debate that never seems to get settled: Is it better to exercise in the morning or at night? The research is certainly mixed. A professor of applied exercise science at the University of New England says that many studies favor the morning. “There’s research that has looked at people engaging in morning versus afternoon exercise, and those who exercise in the morning have lower blood pressure throughout the day and get better sleep,” she says. That said, other studies show that people may have more power and strength dur-

ing early evening workouts. A study published in the Journal Of Sports Sciences found that between 4 and 8 p.m. participants’ grip strength, vertical jump, and even reaction time were at their best compared to other times of day. But when it really comes down to it, the answer is pretty simple: The best time to work out is whenever you can do it. The busy moms, bosses, and athletes you’ll find here have perfected not only the sweat schedule that works for them, but also the motivation to keep it consistent. “meh”—they just have some tricks in their back pockets for getting out the door, whether it’s the first or very last thing they do.

(Full breakfast comes post-run.) Laying out everything you’ll need the night before can help you go from bed to gym in minutes.

JUST DO SOMETHING. There are definitely perks from sweating in the a.m. “Morning exercisers tend to have better adherence in the long run,” says Stephen Ball, Ph.D., a professor of exercise physiology and nutrition at the University of Missouri. “Life usually doesn’t get in the way as much at this time.” Starting with a healthy choice can also have a snowball effect throughout the day. Household too hectic to scoot out to the gym in the morning? Set your alarm just 10 or 15 minutes earlier and do a few simple stretches or body-weight moves by your bed.

BUDDY UP. Kimmel loves the accountability of a run group to help pull her out of bed in the morning. But you can score it with a long-distance friend too. Share your fitness goals, and ask for help in keeping on track. “My coach and I talk on the phone once or twice a week, and I never want to let him down and say I skipped a workout,” says Sellers.

START BEFORE YOU’RE READY. “People often wait until they’re in the habit of going to bed early before they start waking up for morning workouts,” says a, nurse anesthetist and runner-up at the 2018 Boston Marathon, who usually trains at 4 a.m. “But they’re never sleepy enough at night to turn in.” So flip the script: Trigger an earlier bedtime by getting up and working out—even if you don’t feel totally rested. The shortterm sacrifice will help cement your new routine. GET OUT ASAP. The longer you dillydally after you wake up, the easier it is to talk yourself out of your workout. She keeps breakfast short and sweet: a graham cracker and a big glass of water. club

PENCIL IT IN. Evening exercise can blast stress before bed (hello, happy hour!), but last-minute dinner invites can be an endorphin buzzkill. Michelle Cheng is a regular at 8 p.m. Tone House classes; she books them a week ahead, then lets her friends know. “I set expectations. They don’t ask me to hang out at those times, and I don’t get FOMO.” ADJUST MEALTIME. “When I have late workouts, I tend to shift my lunch later—to around two o’clock or so—and make sure to have a snack, like a granola bar, on me before class,” says Cheng. Another option: Sometimes she’ll grab a takeout dinner and have a small portion of it before the workout, then eat the rest after she finishes her sweat sesh. USE YOUR COMMUTE. Make your workout your method of transportation. That’s how Jennifer Indig, who works at a think tank in New York City, fits in her daily workouts: She runs home from Edgars Club @ 4 years

shop smart fitness work. “It kills two birds with one stone,” she says. “I get home, and I knock out my exercise at the same time.” (Plus, when you finish, you enjoy the comfort of your own shower!)

because you’re working out in a fasted state. By fasted state I mean that it’s been a long time since dinner, and you won’t be eating breakfast until after the workout is complete.

AIM FOR LESS. Thandi sticks to her routine—even when she’s dragging— with a counterintuitive trick: She gives herself the option to go a shorter distance than originally planned. “I’ll tell myself that I can hop on the train if I need to,” she says. “The first couple of miles are always tough, but once I’m in a groove, I’m motivated to keep going.”

An afternoon workout may be a great way to wind down from the day. If you have a hectic schedule during the day, hitting the gym may be a great way for you to get some “me” time and focus on yourself. It can also be a great way to transition from the office back home without bringing office stress to the dinner table. Afternoon workouts may be more productive and successful because your body is already warm from the day and has been awake longer. You may not have a ton of time in the afternoon to get a workout in, but shorter workouts are better than interrupted workouts, which you may have if you try to do something in the morning before the kids are off to school.

WIND DOWN. An evening workout can leave you uplifted too. I’m more likely to keep making healthy choices, like grabbing a cup of juice instead of a glass of wine “It gives me more energy to play with my little ones too.” Use that boost to fuel better rest: Make some tea, do a face mask, foam-roll, or journal. Some other expects say, keeping a morning workout schedule works great if you like mornings and are already up early. If you are okay with setting your alarm 30 minutes earlier, and don’t have a problem getting out of bed, mornings may be for you. Most morning workout people are successful because they make their workout part of their lifestyle and go beyond making it just a habit. Mornings may work best because there are no meetings and fewer interruptions, like phone calls or emails. Working out during this time is great if you’re looking to improve your sleep and reduce your fat Edgars Club @ 4 years

Ultimately the time doesn’t matter as long as it works for you. Some people are mornings, others are afternoons, and some still may change it up. The best way to find which workout time works for you is to try it and track things like time of day, workout type, and your overall feelings before, during, and after your workout. After a couple of weeks you’ll begin to see which works best and which helps you feel the best. Whichever time frame has the least resistance and allows you to focus on your workout is the best one for you. c February 2019

TAKE UP CYCLING There are so many ways that exercise can boost your mood: there’s the basic release of adrenalin and endorphins, and the improved confidence that comes from achieving new things (such as completing a sportive or getting closer to that goal). Cycling combines physical exercise with being outdoors and exploring new views. You can ride solo – giving you time to process worries or concerns, or you can ride with a group which broadens your social circle.

Taking a cold shower in the morning, and feeling cold water pour down over our body seems more horrifying than soothing. Taking a cold shower increases alertness. When it comes to hair and skin, one of the most natural ways to maintain your appearance is with cold showers. Hot water has the tendency to dry out our skin, so it’s best to use cold water to tighten your cuticles and pores. Cold water can improve circulation by encouraging blood to surround our organs, which can then help combat some problems of the skin and heart.

DRINK COFFEE Coffee is one of the world’s most popular beverages. Thanks to its high levels of antioxidants and beneficial nutrients, it also seems to be quite healthy. Studies show that coffee drinkers have a much lower risk of several serious diseases. Coffee can help people feel less tired and increase energy levels .That’s because it contains a stimulant called caffeine — the most commonly consumed psychoactive substance in the world. Caffeine is found in almost every commercial fat-burning supplement — and for good reason.

You know that healthy habits, such as eating well, exercising, and avoiding harmful substances, make sense. Despite what you may have heard, eating breakfast isn’t necessary for everyone. In fact, skipping breakfast may be better than eating unhealthy breakfast foods. However, a nutritious, well-balanced breakfast can give you energy and prevent you from eating too much during the rest of the day. Edgars Club @ 4 years

Keto Diet

T

he low-carb, highfat plan promises quick weight loss, but health experts worry about these side effects and complications.

The ketogenic diet—also known as “keto”—has become the latest big thing in weight-loss plans, touted recently by celebs like Jenna Jameson, Mama June, and Halle Berry. The diet involves cutting way back on carbohydrates, to 50 grams a day or less, to help the body achieve a state of ketosis, in which it has to burn fat (rather than sugar) for energy. club

February 2019

Doctors say that keto can be helpful in treating epilepsy; it’s unclear exactly why, but something about a ketogenic state seems to reduce the frequency of seizures. Animal studies have also suggested that the diet may have anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, and cancer-fighting benefits, as well. But as a general weightloss plan, keto is more controversial. Some health experts warn against it entirely, citing unpleasant side effects, health risks, and the diet’s unsustainable nature. Even many keto proponents admit that, if the diet’s not done

“the right way,” it can be the opposite of healthy. Here are a few things you should know about the ketogenic diet before you try it as a way to lose weight. Yes, you might drop pounds, but you should also watch out for the following side effects or complications. THE “KETO FLU” “Some people report that when they start ketosis, they just feel sick,” says Kristen Kizer, RD, a nutritionist at Houston Methodist Medical Center. “There can sometimes be vomit, gastrointestinal distress, a lot of fatigue, and lethargy.” This Edgars Club @ 4 years

so-called keto flu usually passes after a few days, she adds. Josh Axe, a doctor of natural medicine and clinical nutritionist, estimates that about 25% of people who try a ketogenic diet experience these symptoms, with fatigue being the most common. “That happens because your body runs out of sugar to burn for energy, and it has to start using fat,” he says. “That transition alone is enough to make your body feel tired for a few days.” You may be able to minimize the effects of keto flu by drinking plenty of water and getting plenty of sleep. Axe, who sells keto-related supplements on his website, also recommends incorporating natural energy sources to battle fatigue, like matcha green tea, organic coffee, or adaptogenic herbs. DIARRHEA If you find yourself running to the bathroom more often while on a ketogenic diet, a quick internet search will show you that you’re not alone. (Yes, people are tweeting about keto diarrhea.) This may be due to the gallbladder—the organ that produces bile to help break down fat in the diet—feeling “overwhelmed,” says Axe. Diarrhea can also be due to a lack of fiber in the diet, says Kizer, which can happen when someone Edgars Club @ 4 years

cuts way back on carbs (like whole-grain bread and pasta) and doesn’t supplement with other fiber-rich foods, like vegetables. It can also be caused by an intolerance to dairy or artificial sweeteners— things you might be eating more of since switching to a high-fat, low-carb lifestyle. REDUCED ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE. Some athletes swear by the ketogenic diet, not just for weight loss but for improved performance in their sport, as well. But Edward Weiss, PhD, associate professor of nutrition and dietetics at Saint Louis University, doesn’t buy it. “I hear cyclists say all the time that they’re faster and better now that they’re on keto, and my first question is, ‘Well, how much weight did you lose?’” he says. In a recent study in the Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness, Weiss and his colleagues found that participants performed worse on high-intensity cycling and running tasks after four days on a ketogenic diet, compared to those who’d spent four days on a highcarb diet. Weiss says that the body is in a more acidic state when it’s in ketosis, which may limit its ability to perform at peak levels. “Just losing a few pounds is enough to give you a huge advantage on the

bike, but I’m very concerned that people are attributing the benefits of weight loss to something specific in the ketogenic diet,” Weiss continues. “In reality, the benefits of weight loss could be at least partially canceled out by reductions in performance.”

KETOACIDOSIS If you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, you shouldn’t follow the keto diet unless you have your doctor’s permission and close supervision, says Kizer. “Ketosis can actually be helpful for people who have hyperglycemia issues, but you have to be very mindful of your blood sugar and check your glucose levels several times a day,” she says. That’s because, for people with diabetes, ketosis can trigger a dangerous condition called ketoacidosis. This occurs when the body stores up too many ketones—acids produced as a byproduct of burning fat—and the blood becomes too acidic, which can damage the liver, kidneys, and brain. Left untreated, it can be fatal. Ketoacidosis has also been reported in people without diabetes who were following low-carb diets, although this complication is quite rare. Symptoms of ketoacidosis include a dry mouth, frequent urination, nausea, bad breath, and breathing difficulties; if February 2019

WEIGHT REGAIN. Because the keto diet is so restrictive, health experts say it’s not an appropriate diet to follow long-term. (Even Axe says it’s best done for 30 to 90 days, followed by a more sustainable diet plan.) But the problem with that, says Kizer, is that most people will regain a lot of the weight they lost as soon as they go back on carbs. “It’s an issue with any fad diet, but it seems to be extra common with ketosis,” says Kizer. “When people tell me they want to try it because their friends lost weight, I always tell them, ‘Just watch, I almost guarantee that they’ll gain it all back.’” These types of back-andforth weight fluctuations can contribute to disordered eating, Kizer says, or can worsen an already unhealthy relationship with food. “I think this diet appeals to people who have issues with portion control and with binge eating,” she says. “And in many cases, what they really need is a lifestyle coach or a professional counselor to help them get to the bottom of those issues.” LESS MUSCLE MASS, DECREASED METABOLISM Another consequence of keto-relatclub

February 2019

ed weight changes can be a loss of muscle mass, says Kizer—especially if you’re eating much more fat than protein. “You’ll lose weight, but it might actually be a lot of muscle,” she says, “and because muscle burns more calories than fat, that will affect your metabolism.”

When a person goes off the ketogenic diet and regains much of their original weight, it’s often not in the same proportions, says Kizer: Instead of regaining lean muscle, you’re likely to regain fat. “Now you’re back to your starting weight, but you no longer have the muscle mass to burn the calories that you did before,” she says. “That can have lasting effects on your resting metabolic rate, and on your weight long-term.” Increased risk of heart disease and diabetes Axe says that, when done right, the ketogenic diet includes lots of vegetables and lean sources of animal protein. In other words, it’s not an excuse to eat butter and bacon—although some people may try to do just that. That’s why many health experts are concerned about people on the keto diet, especially those who try it without the guidance of a doctor or nutritionist. Doctors say that high-fat diets like this one may raise cholesterol levels, and some studies suggest that they

increase the risk of diabetes. Some have even called it a “cardiologist’s nightmare.”

Just this week, a 25,000-person study presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress in Munich suggested that people on the lowest-carb diets had the highest risk of dying from cancer, cardiovascular conditions, and all other causes. Another study, published this month in the Lancet, also found that people who followed diets that were low in carbs and high in animal proteins had a higher risk of early death compared to those who consumed carbs in moderation. (The opposite was true, however, for low-carb dieters who opted for plant-based proteins over meat and dairy.) “Whether you’re in the paleo camp or the keto camp or the vegan camp, everyone agrees that we want to have a nutrient-rich diet,” Axe says: “Lots of vegetables, herbs, spices, and plant-based sources of fat and protein, too.” “If you’re not doing that, you’re promoting disease in the body—it’s that simple,” Axe says. (And yes, that’s true even if you still lose weight in the beginning.) “If you’re just going to eat butter and bacon,” he adds, “I’d rather you not do keto at all.” Edgars Club @ 4 years

Walk Your Talk...

One Step at a Time D There is always something about ourselves we can improve on. The human potential is limitless, so it’s impossible to reach a point of no growth.

February 2019

o you claim health is important to you–then skip the gym for 6 weeks? Do you believe being productive is important, but work only on the night before a deadline? Do you believe relationships are important, but let your social life stagnate? How do you close that gap between what you value

and how you behave? Blogging has helped me close that gap by forcing me to walk my talk. I’m far from perfect.

Like everyone, I make mistakes and often fail to live up to the things I consider important. But writing has made it easier to stay consistent with those values instead of Edgars Club @ 4 years

falling into excuses. Progress, Not Perfection. Imperfections are part of life. I think it’s sad that some people feel that because being perfectly consistent with your values is impossible, that there is no point trying to debug the inconsistencies. Some self-improvement cynicism is the result of demanding the impossible, expecting perfection instead of progress. My goal has been to notice gaps between my philosophy of life and my behaviors. I’m certainly nowhere near perfection, but even in just a few years of deliberately pursuing this strategy, I’ve made improvements. Here are a few of the inconsistencies I’ve debugged over the past few years: . From Slob to Productive. Productivity and organization were important to me, but I was a messy, undisciplined procrastinator. Focusing

1

Edgars Club @ 4 years

on building the right habits and training myself has almost completely closed this gap. . Unhealthy to Fit. My health and energy levels were important to me, but until a few years ago, I rarely exercised and didn’t have great eating habits. Fast forward to today and I eat a vegetarian diet while exercising regularly. .Non-reader to Literary Glutton. I would have read less than a dozen books in 2002 or 2003. Over the last few years I’ve averaged about 50-70 books each year. .Night Owl to Early Riser. After reading about the potential benefits of waking up early for productivity, I made the switch from waking up at 7:30-8:00 back to 5:30. .Unconscious Spender to Budget Maker. After seeing how my finances weren’t being guided, I put in place a more thorough system for recording and budgeting my expenses. .Occasional Downloader to Abstainer. I’m against

downloading music (illegally). But laziness in this belief meant that music would sometimes wind up on my hard drive from less than reputable sources. I stopped adding new music to my library that wasn’t paid in full several months ago. Recently I took the final step of cleaning my harddrive and MP3 player of any remaining music. .Shy to Extroverted. A few years ago my social life was nearly a zero. I had only a few close friends and wasn’t as outgoing as I’d like to be. Now I have many friends and enjoy being spontaneous in meeting new people.

7

I point out these changes because none were instantaneous. Even after I had decided my beliefs on an issue, it took work to change my behaviors. The moment I declared productivity important to myself, I was still a slob. It took a few years of effort to reach the point I’m at today. From an outside February 2019

perspective, however, nobody sees that effort. I still get comments from readers that assume I was somehow born productive, early-rising or health-conscious. They don’t see the failed attempts I had in implementing GTD, the days I slept right through my alarm or the four failed thirty day trials I went through before exercising stuck.I need to take some of the blame for this, because I generally only write about my self-improvement efforts after the fact. Since selfimprovement involves so many missteps and deadends, I don’t usually find it useful to write about something until I’ve made significant progress in it myself. You only have to look at the current ups and downs of my dating life to see why I don’t share too much advice on that yet. How to Gradually Debug Your Inconsistencies Unlike a computer program, your software can never have zerodefects. Instead, try to think of self-improvement club

February 2019

as trying to reach 98% bug-free. You will inevitably fail to meet your values some of the time, but those errors won’t matter too much in the long run. In order to effectively debug your inconsistencies, you need the right tools. There are many different strategies to debug, but I’d like to share a few tools that were “Aha!” moments for myself. These tools were the difference between using a scalpel and a blunt club for my own debugging: 1.30 Day Trials. Commit to an idea for thirty days, every day. If you mess up on Day 29, you go back to the start. This tool has been invaluable for me in changing many different habits. I’ve probably done over two dozen of these since I first heard of them from Steve Pavlina. 2.Writing out Goals. A goal doesn’t matter unless it is on paper. This applies to simple goals like “Exercise tomorrow”

as much as it applies to big goals like “Become a millionaire.” Before I started writing out my goals, it was only my emotional compass that would decide whether something would get done that day. 3.Breaking Down Fears. If something terrifies you, chop it into pieces you can swallow. Public speaking was an area I took one speech at a time, taking on larger audiences and more difficult presentations. Training your courage like a muscle was a better strategy for me than relying on willpower. I’m still finding new tools, but the fact that this list is small shows that selfimprovement doesn’t need to be overly complicated. One good tool, if practiced, can debug a large range of problems. Nobody can be perfect. But there is still immense value you can get from debugging those inconsistencies. Making the gap between your walk and your talk a little bit smaller. Edgars Club @ 4 years

How to choose the right rug size

R

ugs are one of my favourite things to select when putting a room together, they are like giant pieces of artwork for the floor. Picking the right size is one of the most important decisions when it comes to rug buying, here’s how to choose the right rug size for a room! We recently added a large jute rug to our living room, and although I knew it would make a great impact on the room, I underestimated just how great of an impact! Rug sizes are something so important when designing a room, because too small of a rug will throw off the entire feel of the space. You could have the best furniture ever, but too small of a rug will make your room feel undone and underEdgars Club @ 4 years

whelming. It can be tricky though when purchasing rugs because large rugs can be so expensive. So what gives? Do you spend your entire budget on a large rug and sacrifice all other elements in the room? The answer is: you don’t have to! There are so many inexpensive rugs to choose from, I don’t think you ever have to spend over $700 for a rug, and there are many options well under $200. I think the key to this is to stay neutral and go with an all natural fiber. This creates a base for the rug which can then be changed as your tastes change or as the room develops! Large jute rugs are very inexpensive, plus their inherent organic nature goes well with nearly any style. If you have a more February 2019

modern aesthetic try a gray rug. Personally, I love a bleached jute rug because it creates a clean canvas for layering!

selecting too small of a rug, selecting too large of a rug will completely consume the space.

How to Pick a Rug Size for a Room If you are unsure of what size rug to purchase for your space, you are not alone! Before you can select a rug size, you need to consider the furniture layout. Will you have chairs or a sofa? How long is the dining table? What size Bedroom Rugs bed will be in the room? So, first things first, nail down your furniture selection. Then move onto rug sizes... My best piece of advice for picking out a rug size, is to get all of the furniture in place, and then tape it out on the floor with painters tape (you can even use string if you want!). If you don’t have all of the Living Room Rugs furniture, but you have a good idea of where the furniture will go...still tape it out. Before buying a rug, tape. it. out!!!!

I like to add a rug under the bed, but not completely under the night stands, allowing the night stands to anchor at least their back feet on the floor rather than on the rug. You may find that it looks best

BEDROOM RUGS:When selecting a rug for a bedroom, make sure to leave about a foot wide perimeter around the room. Meaning, don’t let the rug take up the whole room! If the room is on the smaller side, try using runners along the sides of the bed in lieu of a larger rug. Just like club

February 2019

to leave the nightstand completely off the rug, it just depends on the room & size of the bed! If you’re skipping night stands, I’d still pull the rug out a bit so that the headboard is anchored on the floor, while the

foot of the bed remains on the rug. For bedrooms a good rule of thumb is: FULL: 6x9 or 5x8 QUEEN: 8x10 KING: 9x12 DINING ROOM RUGS: I love adding a rug to a dining room, but it is important that you find the sweet spot on size. You don’t want the rug to be so small that the chairs do not fit on it; however, you don’t want the rug to be so large that the floor Edgars Club @ 4 years

shop smart home is completely covered from wall to wall. If you have a large table in a small room and adding a rug would take up the floor space of the room, I say skip the rug in the dining room altogether. If you do add a rug, allow at least a foot or two of flooring to remain visible along the perimeter of the room, but make sure that the rug extends roughly 18”24” from all sides of the table which will allow the chairs to rest on the rug rather than on the floor. In the room above, our dining table is unusually long, so I went with an 10x14 rug. Before ordering the rug, I used tape to mark the corners of a 10x14 rug to make sure all of the chairs would fit on the rug, and that the length of the table wouldn’t extend past the rug. Below is a general guide, but I encourage you to tape out the measurements before purchasing! This sizing concept can also be applied to small work areas and desks. Typical sizes for rugs in the dining room: 6 person table / 6 ft long (72”): 6x9 or 8x10 rug 8 person table / 8 ft. long (96”): 9x12 rug 8 person table / 9 ft. long (108”): 9x12 rug 10-12 person table / 10 ft. long (120”): 10x14 rug LIVING ROOM RUGS: The living room is often the heart of a home, so a durable rug is just as important as selecting the right rug for the space. I love jute rugs in the living room which can be layered upon with inexpensive smaller rugs that Edgars Club @ 4 years

have a bit more interest to them. This adds warmth, depth, and texture to the room making it so much more inviting! If layering, make sure that the ratio of large rug to smaller rug is enough to show off each rug, for example, a 9x12 rug would look great with a 6x9 rug layered on top. When figuring out which size rug is best for your room, first determine how large your couch and/or chairs are. If you have a very large living room, you may find a 10x14 rug is best for your space. Make sure that the front legs of the furniture are on the rug and allow 6-8” of rug space on either side of the couch/chair. If you have a large living room, and the seating area is floating in the center - opt for a large rug and place all of the furniture on the rug. If the living room is smaller or the couch is up against a wall, you can opt for a slightly smaller rug with the front legs of the furniture resting on the rug and the back legs resting on the floor. ENTRYWAYS: Entryways allow for you to get creative because you generally don’t need a very large rug for this space! You can choose between a runner or a small area rug. If you select an area rug, select a size that allows the front legs of your entry table to rest on the rug, but the back legs to rest on the floor. If you select a runner, allow 6-8” of floor space between the rug and any furniture. You want to make sure it appears to be a runner and not an awkwardly placed area rug. February 2019

HISTORY :RUSSIA: COMMUNISM (1918-1991)

W 72

ith Stalin’s achievement of total control, two important developments took place with regard to the international position of the Soviet Union: 1. The Soviets achieved domination of the Comintern 2. Stalin reversed the policy of a ‘united front’ in the expansion of Communist power. THE COMINTERN Opposition had been generally allowed within the Comintern and the Soviet Communist Party until 1927-9. However, as the 1920s passed, dissenting voices encountered an increasingly difficult time. In the Comintern, as in the Party itself, the Right Opposition was to continue for two more years then the Left. Bukharin, the most important Rightist and President of the Comintern, attended the VI Congress of the Comintclub

ern in 1928. Although by this stage he was powerless before Stalin, he kept his position until 1929 when Molotov took over the role for a while before Dmitry Manuilsky was appointed to head the Comintern. THE VI CONGRESS OF THE COMINTERN Stalin directed the VI Congress of the Comintern which declared that capitalism was preparing an assault on the Soviet Union. This was regarded as an effect of increasing contradictions and weaknesses in the ‘imperialist’ camp. All forms of bourgeois political activity were to be attacked under the slogan “class against class.” These bourgeois activities were regarded as comprising social democracy which subverted the proletariat from within, and fascism which sought to enslave it from without. The main enemy was identified as the Social Democrats.

COMMUNISM AND GERMANY: Most communist parties outside the USSR were tiny, only the German party being large enough to independently influence affairs. Furthermore, Germany was, since the ending of the ‘united front’ policy, the only state in which Communists could achieve anything concrete without direct Soviet help. The German republic was attacked by the Communists and Nazis who in the 1928 Reichstag elections won 54 seats and 13 seats respectively. Of the republic’s defenders, the Social Democrats were the strongest single party, and many of its important members wanted to ally with the Communists against the growth of Nazism. THE ATTITUDE OF THE COMMUNISTS German Communists took the anti-Social DemEdgars Club @ 4 years

They joined the Nazis and the rest of the extreme Right in 1929-30 to publicly condemn the Young Plan which required the payment of reparations. Opposed the Social Democrats’ overtures for better relations with the victorious powers of the First World War. March-April 1931 the Eleventh Plenum of the Comintern declared that the Social Democrats were the most active political party in preparation for a war against the Soviet Union. Communist leaders also supported the demand by Nazis and Nationalists for a referendum to remove the Prussian government which was the mainstay of the republic’s strength. Although there was a referendum, the proposal failed. The Communists won 89 seats and the Nazis 230 seats in the elections of July1932. Followed in a few months by co-operation by the two parties in the Berlin transport strike. The Social Democrats made a last attempt to persuade the Communists to ally with them in February 1933 to stop Hitler. However the party leaders believed that it was essenEdgars Club @ 4 years

tial that the Nazis did take power: ‘Then in four weeks the whole working class will be united under the leadership of the Communist Party.’ Following the March elections Hitler forced the passing of the Enabling Law which gave him total power for four years; time enough to implement “gleichschaltung” or “forcible co-ordination” to form the totalitarian state, and with it the destruction of the German Communist Party (KPD). ANALYSING THE FAILURE OF GERMAN COMMUNISM: . Trotsky’s view Trotsky, the Social Democrats and others said that the rise of Hitler should be blamed on the Communists due to their refusal to ally with the Social Democrats and their co-operation with Hitler.

1

2

. Franz Borkenau’s view: Borkenau says that had the Communists supported the Social Democrats, many Communist voters among the unemployed would have switched allegiance to the Nazis because really radical. Communist voters would not support an alliance with the status quo. In the end the Communist

Party was unable to mobilise all of its voters against the Prussian government, so Borkenau’s argument is on shaky ground.

3

. The ‘Bolshevik’ view On December 31 1933, ‘Bolshevik’, the Russian Party’s theoretical organ said ‘In Germany the proletarian revolution is nearer to realization than in any other country.’ FACTORS TO BE CONSIDERED • Even if the German Communists could have acted differently, Moscow was not willing to allow them to do so. • The VI Congress’s anti-Social Democrats stance had a solid basis on which to work in that the two totalitarian parties found common ground in their hatred of liberal government and the laws that supported it. • Thus the Communists’ policy is difficult to understand in that their stance was always risky in the extreme given that if the Weimar Republic fell then whichever totalitarian party was victorious, it would inevitably destroy the other and the Communists predicted that it would be the Nazis who would take power. TION • In April 1933, Soviet spokesman Eugene Varga said that Hitler’s assumption of power had resulted from bourgeois terror at the rise of german Communism. • The Soviets believed that “history” would sweep Hitler aside. • Their inability to accept that Hitler could remain in power was an attempt to justify Comintern policy. A LAST NOTE • Even though the Nazis destroyed the German Communists, they declared their desire for good relations with Moscow, and in May 1933 ratified the renewal of the 1926 neutrality treaty with the Soviets (this had been pending since 1931). • By the end of 1933 Moscow felt it necessary to publicly refer to the Nazis’ persistence in using the anti-Soviet propaganda line of Mein Kampf. MAXIM LITVINOV Maxim Litvinov became foreign commissar in 1930, having gradually assumed more and more responsibility while assistant to foreign minister Chicherin who became ill in the late 1920’s. THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS club

February 2019

DISARMAMENT CONFERENCE 1927: Litvinov attended the League Disarmament Conference at the end of 1927. The First Congress of the Comintern described the League as a ‘Holy Alliance of the bourgeoisie for the suppression of the proletarian revolution.’ Litvinov presented a convention for immediate disarmament also emphasising that the aim was not to limit armaments. Some powers had refused to risk disarmament because the Soviet Union would refuse to carry it out. Litvinov wanted to undermine their stance for propaganda purposes so that it could be claimed that the capitalist states were trying to avoid disarmament. Two years later the same motive lay behind the Soviet offer to join in pan-European discussions because ‘By taking part... the Soviet Union will wreck the plans for the secret elaboration of anti-Soviet projects.’ THE LITVINOV PROTOCOL AND THE KELLOG-BRIAND PACT: The American and French foreign secretaries presented the Kellog-Briand Pact for the renunciation of war as an instrument of national policy. Moscow saw an

opportunity to use it by means of the Litvinov Protocol signed in Moscow in February 1929. The result was that without waiting for all the ratifications of the Pact, the Protocol had the effect of bringing it into operation on a regional basis. The USSR, Poland, Romania, Latvia and Estonia signed, with Lithuania, Turkey, Persia and Danzig signing a few months later. THE 1932 NON-AGGRESSION TREATIES Non-aggression treaties were signed with Poland, the Baltic States, Finland and France. Disagreements over Romania’s annexation of Bessarabia prevented them and the Soviets reaching a similar agreement. THE BASIS OF SOVIET FOREIGN POLICY Soviet foreign policy at this time was based on mobilising the anti-Versailles powers against Britain and France. It was never assumed that longterm rapport would be possible with one group or that there would be war with the other. This policy was emphasised by public trials held during the First Five Year Plan in which the defendants were accused of plotting Edgars Club @ 4 years

with Britain and France. When Labour returned to power in 1929, the USSR resumed relations with Britain. US-SOVIET RELATIONS INTRODUCTION At the end of 1933 the USA recognised the Soviet Union. This did not change Soviet foreign policy but became significant once the Soviet volte-face had taken place in 1934-5. Soviet debt repudiation and confiscation had soured relations between America and the USSR. Even worse was the issue of propaganda inside the US. Although there was an absence of diplomatic relations US commercial and other contacts continued. For example, the American Relief Administration’s work during the 1921-22 famine while Hoover was president. Of the other American states, only Mexico and Uruguay recognised the USSR, though the former broke off relations in 1930. However if the US gave recognition, it was clear that many Latin American states would too. nomic Conference. It was through these talks that recognition was to come. William Bullitt, who had been Wilson’s envoy in 1919 talked to Litvinov during the London Conference and made a visit to Moscow a few weeks later. In November, Litvinov was sent to Washington in response to President Roosevelt’s invitation. Diplomatic relations were established that same month. THE TERMS AND RESULTS 1. Both sides agreed not use hostile propaganda against the other 2. The USSR recognised the legal and religious rights of US citizens in the country 3. The USSR dropped its claims over US intervention in Siberia. This emphasised the Soviets main reason for wanting US recognition: fear of Japanese ambitions in the Pacific 4. A trade agreement was signed in 1935 5. Debt negotiations failed Soviet Foreign Policy in the Far East Before the Manchurian Incident in 1931, Britain had been seen as the main potential enemy. Stalin felt that Japan would fight on Britain’s side if war came

with America. However, there was little concern about any threat from British imperialism. It was hoped to harm British interests through Soviet partnership with the Kuomintang in China, though this came to nothing. THE CHINESE EASTERN RAILWAY: The Chinese Eastern Railway through Manchuria was Moscow’s chief asset there. The railway was seized in May 1929 by Marshall Chang Hsueh-Liang, the ruler of Manchuria under nominal Nationalist suzerainty. Diplomatic relations between the USSR and China were severed in July. In November the railway was recaptured by a Soviet military expedition led by General Bliukhev who had been Moscow’s adviser to the Kuomintang armies. THE JAPANESE INVASION OF MANCHURIA: In September 1931 Japan invaded Manchuria and captured the whole province including the area of the railway. The League of Nations did nothing. The Soviets, realising that an attack on the Japanese would result in war, decided to accept negotiations to sell the railway to Japan, the final agreement being reached in 1935. February 2019

MOSCOW AND THE CHINESE COMMUNISTS Moscow and the Chinese Communists were still hostile to Chiang Kaishek’s government which had ended its alliance with the USSR. The first Communist leader, Ch’en Tuhsiu was held responsible for the failure of 1927, and was replaced by Li Li-san who was also purged in due course, being recalled to Moscow in 1930. He was replaced by Mao Tsetung, who with Chu Teh led the ‘Long March’ in which the Communists moved 6,000 miles to Yenan in Shensi province to escape from the Nationalist drive to destroy them. This migration brought them to the borders of Soviet controlled Mongolia. Chiang-Kai-shek hoped to force them over the border but Mao and Stalin had other plans. The Comintern line had shifted during the Long March, and in 1935 the Chinese Communists had halted to hold a conference in Szechuan to repeat the new Comintern line for home consumption and to demand a united front club

against Japan. In Europe this was known as the ‘Popular Front’. FRANCE In December 1933, Litvinov made a public distinction between capitalist states using their foreign policies as a criterion. He differentiated three groups: 1. “Actively aggressive” powers 2. “Passively indifferent” powers 3. “Actively indifferent” powers He also made it clear that Moscow was worried about the possibilities of Nazi ambitions in Eastern Europe.

THE FIRST POPULAR FRONT AGREEMENT 1934 On February 6th, following the Stavisky financial scandal, the Communists and extreme Right co-operated in a riot to overthrow Daladier’s government. Then, six days later, the Communists joined with the socialist trade unions in a strike against the Right, though this alliance was qualified by Maurice Thorez, the Communist leader in the Party paper “Humanite” in April, saying that a marriage between Communists and Socialists ‘is fundamen-

tally alien to the spirit of Bolshevism.’ He was summoned to Moscow that same month to receive new orders. When he returned, he called for the same “marriage” he had rejected earlier; the French Socialists duly accepted. A pact was signed in July. It was the first Popular Front agreement. When, in November, Thorez proposed a Popular Front Government, the Socialists were less keen. THE FRANCO-SOVIET PACT 1935 There was a meeting in May 1934 in Geneva between Litvinov and Barthou of France. There had already been proposals for a Franco-Soviet mutual assistance pact, and Barthou also suggested that the USSR join the League of Nations. Litvinov and Barthou had hoped to include most of the Eastern European countries but they refused so France and the USSR went ahead without them. The pact was signed in May and provided mutual aid and assistance in the event of a third power launching an attack. THE SOVIET-CZECH PACT 1935 Edgars Club @ 4 years

This was signed in the same month as the Franco-Soviet Pact, but this time, mutual assistance was only available if France aided the country that was attacked. SUBSEQUENT DEVELOPMENTS IN FRANCE Stalin gave support without any reservations to ‘the policy of national defence followed by France so as to maintain her armed forces on the level necessary to maintain security’. Following the agreement with the Socialists and the Moscow-approved defensive stand taken by the Communists, the latter made large gains in local elections in late May and June. Genuinely Leftist Socialists were surprised and shocked when Thorez extended co-operation to the Socialist-Radicals as well as the Socialists. It seemed that Communists everywhere had put the defence of the Soviet Union and the support of any government resisting the Nazis before revolution because of the growing threat from Hitler’s Germany. United Front agreement was the test run for its newly adopted policy. The Popular Front was proclaimed which meant Communist co-operation with any group, whether Socialist or on the Right, who were resisting Nazism or Japanese militarism. The Seventh Congress was the first congress at which a complete display of unanimity was achieved, because, it was completely under Stalin’s control. STALIN’S POLICY It was clear that the policy of 1928-34 in which the USSR avoided international entanglements was no longer viable. Three strands in Stalin’s foreign policy can be clearly defined from this time: 1. Recognition of the danger from Nazism 2. That gains could be made by a call to resist “war and fascism”. 3. Stalin ended the “go-italone” policy which had been in place between 1928-34 It is uncertain whether Stalin seriously wanted to align with the British and French against Nazi Germany. General Krivitsky, the Soviet intelligence chief said Stalin never took the Popular Front seriously; rather he saw it

merely as something he could barter in a trade-off with Hitler. The Soviets aligned with groups of “capitalist” powers simply from considerations of power and expediency. Thus the pro-Versailles stance in operation from 1934 was not based on any sense of ideological compatibility with Britain and France. Stalin seems to have misjudged their relative strengths on the one hand, and Germany on the other. The same is true of his stance regarding Hitler’s hatred of, and designs on the Soviet Union. STALIN AND THE POPULAR FRONT Although it would be fair to say that Stalin expected little from relations with Britain and France, it does seem that he hoped to create or strengthen these alliances. Public statements from Moscow during this period led to many using the Nazi danger as an excuse for the horrendous excesses perpetrated on Stalin’s orders during the 1930’s. In the end, few Popular Front agreements or governments were formed, and none of them ever formed a direct bridge to Moscow. On the other hand, the psychological effects of the policy were far reaching. February 2019

Why It’s Important 78

to Have Friends

Being a teenager can be really difficult. You need someone to hold you down

help to know what makes cliques tick. A GROUP OF FRIENDS VS. A CLIQUE Being part of a group can help make your day easier to deal with — and you can learn some great life skills like being a good listener, sharing experiences, and respecting people. Groups can form around things people have in common. So jocks, goths, preps, skaters, and even the math club are nat-

urally drawn together because they share similar interests. The people in these groups feel they have a place where they’re welcome and supported, and where they can be themselves. Some people form groups from being in drama club, or liking the same music or movies, or even just because they like to hang out at the mall. Some groups stick together for a long time. Others drift apart after a while as people develop new Edgars Club @ 4 years

interests, make different friends, or just find they have less in common. People can move in and out of different groups and can even be part of several at the same time. Even within a group, people often have one or two friends they feel closest to and enjoy the most. Some friendship groups seem pretty flexible and welcome people to join in. Others seem much more restricted, though. People in these groups make it clear that not just anyone can be part of their crowd. That type of restricted group is sometimes called a clique. WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH CLIQUES? Cliques are tight groups that usually have a strict code of membership and ways to act. Instead of being centered on shared values and beliefs, many cliques tend to focus on maintaining their status and popularity. For instance, a clique may try to make it seem like the people in it are “better” than those outside, or that their clique is higher status than another clique. People in cliques sometimes use their power to hurt others on purpose, Edgars Club @ 4 years

either by excluding them, being mean, or both. Sometimes they might insult people by trying to “fix” them or give them “makeovers.” Other times it becomes more serious and someone outside the group is targeted or victimized for being, looking, or acting different. Unlike regular groups of friends, where members are free to socialize with others outside the group, people in cliques often do everything together. They sit together in class, go to the mall together after school — and they only do stuff with other clique members or people they decide are “cool.”

Although people might think it’s better to belong to a clique than to be excluded, many times people in cliques end up dealing with lots of pressures and rules. They soon start to worry about whether they’ll continue to be popular or whether they’ll be dropped. After a while, they may begin to realize that true friends wouldn’t be so bossy or demanding. WHY DO CLIQUES ATTRACT PEOPLE? Cliques attract people for different reasons: For

some people, being popular or cool is the most important thing, and cliques give them a place where they can get this social status. Other people want to be in cliques because they don’t like to feel left out. Some people simply feel it’s better to be on the inside than the outside (it’s not, but more on that later). Cliques give people who like to take control a chance to be in charge (for good or bad!). For people who feel more comfortable following, they offer a place where rules are clearly defined. It’s usually clear to clique members what they need to do to fit in. Sometimes that means sacrificing some freedom and following the leader rather than doing what you feel like doing. Clique membership is usually tightly controlled by the leaders. These social gatekeepers are the ones with the power to decide who should be hot and who should not. This type of membership control usually happens in cliques of girls. As many great kids have found, entry into a clique isn’t guaranteed. In fact, a February 2019

girl who is seen as likeable and popular may actually be excluded from belonging to a clique. That’s because her personality or confidence may pose a threat to the leaders. She might not be a good “follower” — especially if she can be popular enough on her own. Sometimes her friends may even be invited to join when she isn’t. Clique members may deliberately exclude her in an attempt to take away her perceived power or the threat they think she could pose.

Cliques aren’t just for girls. Guys form cliques, too — usually around a sport, computer game, or type of clothing or music. They can be just as mean as girls about the outcasts of the social group. The View from the Inside It’s not all roses inside a clique either. A person’s standing within the group can always be under threat. Most of the followers cling to the leader not out of true friendship but because they want to keep their position in the group. But even the leader can lose her power. In fact, the queen bee in a strong girl club

clique probably worries as much — or even more — about being popular and accepted as the outsiders do. Because no one feels secure, clique members often use the tools of flattery, humiliation, or rumors to manipulate situations and preserve their status. A few girls manage to stay friends with people both inside and outside the clique. But that can be hard to do because there’s often intense pressure from the group to be friends only with people on the approved list. It takes a lot of self-confidence to dare to be friends with someone outside the clique. Sometimes clique members decide they want out. They don’t like being limited by the rules, and they don’t like leaving others out and hurting people’s feelings. As people get older, they may not feel like being part of a clique anymore. Usually toward the end of high school, kids are more relaxed about who is “in” and who’s not. But earlier on in your school life it can take a lot of courage to leave a clique or decide to remain on the outside.

and cliques using social network sites. These have become popular sites to put others down, invite only selected friends to a party, and make mean comments or posts. People can even build fake profiles. Only post profile information and photos that you want everyone to see. Keep your messages to other people online private. Friendships change. Just as one clique can make life miserable, changes in social groups can take their power away. You may encounter cliques as a freshman or sophomore. But the good news is that most cliques disappear by the end of high school. Want to know the real secret to being popular and having friends? Be a good friend yourself. People who enjoy true and lasting popularity are those who have good friendship skills. Being a friend means being respectful, fair, interested, trustworthy, honest, caring, and kind. So if you want to have friends, be just the kind of friend you’d like to have and stay true to who you are.

SUPPLIES: * Acrylic Paint * Black, yellow, and either pink or red construction paper * A marker * Glue and/or tape * Scissors (for little ones just beginning to use scissors this is our favorite pair) * Pipe cleaners * Googly eyes

DIRECTIONS Cut 2 large hearts from each color of construction paper (black, yellow, and red/pink). From your red/pink paper, you’ll also need 2 medium size hearts for the antennas, and 2 small hearts for the mouth. To make cutting the hearts easier, simply fold your paper in half and draw a half heart shape along the fold and have them cut along the line. Starting with one of your black hearts, start creating a pattern of black, yellow, black, yellow by Edgars Club @ 4 years

laying each heart on top of the one before it and gluing them together. To make sure that you can see the face of your bumblebee, start with black on the bottom and work your way up finishing with a yellow heart. When the glue has dried on those, turn them over and glue your red/pink hearts to the back so that they are sticking out the sides. These will make your wings. To make your antennas, cut a pipe cleaner in half and tape each half to one of your medium sized red/pink hearts. Tape the other end of the pipe cleaners to the back of your bumblebee. Add the face! Glue on some googly eyes, draw a mouth and stick your smallest red/ pink hearts on each end of his smile and you’ve got yourself an adorable little bumblebee
