Until you value yourself, you won’t value your time.” M. Scott Peck arch is upon us and we are 3 months into the year. You may be wondering when, what, how, why and where the 3 months went to so swiftly. As I was reminded this month by life “Time and tide awaits no man.” We are truly dragged along if we do not watch where we place our feet. This month is moving along fast and we the year even faster. What have you accomplished in 3 months. Have you stuck to your goals or have you given up on some and focused on the most pressing. Whilst its ok to change the goal or the route to the goal, its not ok to give up or to me cowed into submission. Like the name of teh month, March, March is the time to keep pushing, keep striving. Remember that it is the value you put on yourself and your time which will prevail in determining how far you will go.

Apart from Taraji passing on the handbook to What Men Want the ladies were treated to some top notch entertainment. The Harare ladies were serenaded to some Bryan K songs and the Bulawayo ladies were left all loved up by Victor Stot. Movie date with the girls is incomplete without some goodies. Nine (9) ladies from Harare and Bulawayo snagged some shoes and lingerie for the Best Dressed Competition courtesy of Edgars. 3 BEST EXERCISES TO REDUCE PAIN FROM HEELS

The aim of these exercises is to stretch and lengthen the-had-been shortened calf muscles as well as to strengthen the buttock and thigh muscles to ensure stability and support.

1

. Calf stretch: Stand at arm’s length facing a wall and step forward with the right foot; keep both feet flat on the floor. Place your hands on the wall at chest height and press your right knee against the wall until a stretch is felt in the left calf. Hold for 2 seconds and release the stretch. Repeat 10 times for each leg.

2

. Calf roll: Sit flat on the floor and place a foam roller underneath the right ankle with both legs straight and your hands on the floor behind your body. Press your body as you roll the foam roller up your Edgars Club @ 4 years

Roll the ball slowly on the foot and alternate the intensity by shifting weight from one leg to the other.

MILK OF MAGNESIA Getting a matte face in even the most hot and humid weather is definitely possible. It doesn’t take a hard to find primer or a finely milled powder that you can only buy in Paris. Nope. What it takes is a quick visit to your local pharmacy for Milk of Magnesia. Apply a small amount.

HAVE BLEMISHES AND SPOTS ON YOUR SKIN? In a bowl, add one teaspoon of baking soda and squeeze the juice of half a lemon in it Mix the two to get a thick paste. Now on a clean and slightly damp face, apply this mixture. You can first cover the blemishes and marks and then use the rest to apply on the remaining areas. Leave it on for a couple of minutes and then wash your wash first with warm water and later with a cold splash. Pat dry the skin and apply a moisturiser with SPF. Apply this at night.

BEAUTY BUZZ We take a glimpse at what’s hot and happening in the world of beauty.

PICK THE RIGHT RAZOR FOR YOU

Four blades. Five blades. Battery powered blades! Every year companies seem to release new multi-blade razors, but for those with sensitive skin, acne-prone skin or ingrown hairs, sometimes less is more. Ingrown hairs happen most often in people with curly hair, coarse hair, or hair that grows in different directions. The multi-blade razors allow you to shave nicely in one pass, so for people who are irritated by multiple shaves, that would help. But for people who have ingrown hairs, it’s best to use a two blade razor, since it doesn’t cut as close.

LATHER UP WITH WATER Fact: Shaving dry will hurt your skin. This can cause friction for the blade, and lead to multiple passes with the razor that will increase the chances of cuts, acne and ingrown hair. Even slapping some shaving cream on alone won’t do. Get wet instead, and your skin will thank you. Once the skin is wet and warm you can use a mild shave gel, or there are some very good shave creams that will lubricate the skin, and they soften the hair. Let them sit on the skin for a minute or more before beginning to shave.

BEAUTY BUZZ We take a glimpse at what’s hot and happening in the world of beauty.

CTM IS ESSENTIAL Like women, the CTM routine (cleansing, toning and moisturising) is just as important for men. They are exposed to pollution, car exhaust, cigarette smoke and other pollutants on a daily basis, which damage the skin. Also, men tend to have oilier and thicker skin than women. They need to use a good facial cleanser that works on all kinds of skin.

The skin is the body’s largest organ, and it is constantly in contact with the elements. Pollutants and dirt from the environment can clog your pores, and toxins from your diet can cause your complexion to suffer (but) a few small changes (can) greatly improve the look and feel of your skin. club

f you listen, skin speaks. Your skin is your body’s largest organ and has a huge impact on your overall health. It deserves to be heard. One of the loudest messages our skin gives us is that it’s time for a detox. If you don’t know the signs — if you aren’t tuned in — you may miss them. This lack of awareness can

spiral out, leading to your skin not looking its best and other overall health issues. There are many signs your body uses to communicate with you. They can be visual, physical, and/or emotional. Symptoms can come and go, change, or be persistent. However, once you learn what to Edgars Club @ 4 years

look smart beauty look for, you have the power to be proactive and lessen the stress on your skin and body. Here are some telltale phrases I hear that means it’s time for a detox: • “I don’t know what is going on with my skin.” • “My skin just changed. I can’t get enough moisture/ its overproducing oil.” • “Where did these pimples/blackheads come from?” • “I feel so low energy and my skin isn’t glowing.” Your skin is a wonderful window into your overall health. It provides clues and signs that we ought not to ignore. I aim to have people do the entire detox process from the inside out. To garner the optimum results, I recommend internal cleansing as well. While most of us already know when we’ve been “overdoing” it in some form, this list can serve as a key to help determine if you need a detox: • White or yellow-coated tongue • Bad breath • Congested/uneven/ Edgars Club @ 4 years

enlarged pores, blackheads, or pustules • Increased belly fat • Abdominal bloating • Inability to lose weight • Acne, rosacea, itchy skin, extreme dryness, skin feels rough, bumpy and/or uneven skin • Fatigue/waking up tired regardless of how many hours you slept • Moodiness • Lowered immunity • Frequent headaches • Chemical sensitivity • Insomnia • Under constant stress • Carbohydrate and sugar cravings • Needing caffeine for energy • Constipation • Dull, ruddy appearance of skin • You, or someone you spent a lot of time with, is a smoker • You are outdoors often • You travel often • Seasonal changes • Overproduction of skin oils Here are some of the causes of these issues — as well as the solutions: DIET Your skin reacts to what

you eat. It can manifest in your overall complexion, luster, and glow, as well as how you feel. Dehydrating foods cannot only be counterproductive for your overall health, but a killer for skin. These foods include, but aren’t limited to: white sugar, white flour, alcohol, caffeine, processed foods, soda, and some dairy. Some of these foods are also inflammatory and can exacerbate skin issues, further necessitating a cleanse/detox. Dehydration and a lack of essential fatty acids can also lead to skin issues. What to do: Reduce your intake of the inflammatory foods listed above and choose healthier options. Drink herbal teas, turmeric milk, incorporate more dark leafy greens, avocado, chia and flax seeds, drink green vegetable juices that are not filled with fruits (I like to say eat your fruit and drink your greens), soak your seeds and nuts, drink plenty of water, and cook with roots such as turmeric, burdock, and February 2019

free of toxins. Disregard the marketing on the label and read the ingredients list. Be wary of greenwashing jargon such as “all natural,” “chemical free,” and “toxin free.” JUST focus on the ingredients. With so many options, here’s a good rule of thumb: If you can’t read it or don’t know what it is, then skip it.

while traveling. Shower promptly after exercising and sweating. Wash your face after exposure to dirt and other particulates. Keep the car window open for fresh air if not in heavy traffic when there’s increased exhaust. Wash new clothes before wearing and give your skin a “breather.” Try going makeup free!

Simultaneously, our bodies are bombarded and burdened with increased chemical exposure from cleaning supplies, clothing finishes, paints, and pollution. This taxes our bodies as well as our skin. Cosmetic chemicals in the “cone” family have become extremely popular, including dimethicone and silicone, and they can clog and congest pores, wreaking havoc on our skin.

LIFESTYLE Frequent air and automobile travel also exposes us to extra toxins. The recycled air on airplanes is drying and can lead to congested pores. Exposure to exhaust fumes while commuting can clog and pollute pores. Other activities like sports, baking, and even gardening all have small particulates (dirt, flour) which mix with your skin’s natural oils, causing pore obstruction. Habits such as smoking or vaping also lead to skin and health issues and make detoxing a must.

STRESS Simply put, it’s a killer, not to mention a HUGE skin ager. Most of us can’t avoid it, but we can learn to manage it.

What to do: Dare to go bare! Use products

What to do: Hydrate inside and out, especially

CHEMICALS IN COSMETICS Chemical additives in cosmetics don’t just sit on top of your skin. They have transdermal penetration capabilities, allowing them to enter your bloodstream. This is especially true when products are filled with penetration-enhancers, like propylene glycol, which allow chemicals to more easily enter your bloodstream. 52

What to do: Make a list of your personal stress-busters. They could be anything from reading a book, spending time with friends and family, practicing yoga, exercising, walking, going to the movies, or laughing. gym-going ‘distorted ego.’ I had this idea that everyone was going to stop what they were doing and judge me every moment. Reality check? After 35,000 hours working in a gym setting, I can tell you this: the only one who really cares is you,” she says. “Everyone else is so focused on themselves they couldn’t care less or they’re thinking the exact same thing themselves.” Since not even top trainers are immune to a little gym anxiety, they’ve got the expert strategies to help you score some major confidence gains. Here’s how to increase your confidence at the gym and crush a fear of being judged. Plan your workout. “I don’t suggest walking into a gym and winging it,” says Tendai. “It’s the aimlessness that feels uncomfortable. You want to have a plan.” Before heading to the gym, read-up on a workout routine that will take the guesswork out of your sweat session or download an app that will take you through a circuit in real time. Practice at home. Fifty-one percent of women reported fear of improperly doing an exercise—even with a plan, nailing a single leg deadlift can feel nerve-wracking. Borden suggests perfecting your form at home to help you feel more confident. “I always stress form first, then layer in intensity, weight load, etc.” Look for apps and downloads that break down the fundamentals, which will have you teaching your fellow gym goers perfect push-up form in no time. Edgars Club @ 4 years

shop smart fitness Know your equipment. Even if you’re an avid gym-goer, not all gym equipment is the same. You might confidently stroll up to a machine only to realize you have no idea how that model works. According to the survey, over 58 percent of women feel like they’re being judged on using equipment the wrong way. There’s an obvious solution to this. “If you don’t know how to use a piece of equipment, grab a trainer and ask. They’re eager to show you proper form— that’s one reason they are there. But if the thought of asking a trainer a newbie question freaks you out, you can also up your gym confidence by planning ahead. “There are good YouTube instructions online with very straightforward clips on how to use equipment. Find one piece of equipment you know you’re comfortable with, and make that your home base. Bring a set of dumbbells over to your machine and switch between exercises. (Just make sure you’re practicing good gym etiquette and sharing.) The idea is to not wander around the entire gym. Choose a workout and stick to a plan. Be a follower. Classes can be a blast and are a great way to get into your workout groove. But the thought of stepping into a new class where the instructor might call you out or you might not know how to use that studio’s spin bike might keep you from signing up. fortable. That way you can easily follow the more seasoned cardio queens and not feel like all eyes are on you. Report harassment. There are some reasons for gym anxiety that are out of your control: 5 percent of women reported being sexually harassed at the gym. There is no excuse for sexual harassment and you should report anyone to management immediately if you feel harassed or threatened in any way. That goes for members and inappropriate personal trainers. Sadly, they’re definitely out there.

When looking for a gym, you want to find a place where you feel comfortable and that might not always be at the nearest well known gyms. Although these types of gyms usually offer a wide range of services and classes, the large spaces and sometimes aggressive salespeople can make it uncomfortable for some. For more individualized and caring attention as well as a welcoming atmosphere, check out some smaller environments.

Remember your goals. Remember what makes you want to go to the gym in the first place: To make your body stronger, score a little mental health boost, prioritize taking care of yourself Taking care of yourself also means eliminating the self-sabotaging jury in your head, or at least starting to ignore it. Even if you don’t believe it yet, act as if you feel the confidence. If you arrive at a gym prepared, with a workout in hand, you won’t have time for anything else other than a good sweat.” Choosing Your Health Club There are many factors to consider when choosing a health club, from location to membership fees and contracts. But none of that matters if it doesn’t have the right kind of atmosphere. club

Live Health SPICES FOR HEALTH

64 64

Most of us have herbs and spices in our kitchen cabinet somewhere and they often get haphazardly added to recipes. Interestingly, there are many health benefits of herbs and spices, not to mention they improve the taste of so many foods! All spices originate from plants: flowers, fruits, seeds, barks, leaves, and roots. Herbs and Spices have antibacterial and antiviral properties and many are high in B-vitamins and trace minerals. True sea salt, for instance, contains 93 trace minerals. Most herbs and spices also contain more disease-fighting antioxidants than fruits and vegetables.

SHOP FOR BELL PEPPERS Green pepper is a very powerful antioxidants.. They contain plenty of vitamin A, B Complex (especially vitamin B6 and B9), and C, which are able to counterbalance the destructive effects of free radicals in our body.. Asthma patients can be highly benefited by green peppers as they are full of phytonutrients, a special group of plant compounds (basically natural chemicals) having the capacity of relaxing respiratory passage and lowering panting.. Green chili pepper can curb down the cardiovascular risks dramatically. The reason behind it is the presence of loads of vitamin C. When it comes to taking care of our colon, nothing is better than dietary fibers of peppers.

When it comes to enjoying the great outdoors, mosquito bites seem to be an unavoidable evil, especially in warm, humid weather. While bees and wasps inject venom when they sting, mosquitoes inject a proboscis, which looks like a tiny straw, to suck up tiny amounts of your blood and release anti-clotting agents. lcoholism, now known as alcohol use disorder, is a condition in which a person has a desire or physical need to consume alcohol, even though it has a negative impact on their life. Health professionals now say that a person has an alcohol use

disorder (AUD).

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) describes alcohol use disorder as “problem drinking that becomes severe.” A person with this condition does not know when or how to stop drinking. They spend a lot of time thinking about alcohol, and they cannot control how much they consume, even if it is causing serious problems at home, work, Edgars Club @ 4 years

and financially. Alcohol abuse can be used to talk about excessive or inappropriate consumption of alcohol, but not necessarily dependence. Moderate alcohol consumption does not generally cause any psychological or physical harm. However, if who enjoy social drinking increase their consumption or regularly consume more than is recommended, AUD may eventually develop.

Symptoms:

A person who drinks excessive amounts of alcohol will often not be the first person to realize that this is so.

Genes: Some specific genetic factors may make some people more likely to develop an addiction to alcohol and other substances. There may be a family history.

The age of the first alcoholic drink: A study has suggested that people who start drinking alcohol before the age of 15 years may be more likely to have problems with alcohol later in life. Easy access: There appears to be a correlation between easy access to alcohol — such as cheap prices — and alcohol abuse and alcohol-related deaths. One study registered a significant drop in alcohol-related deaths after one state raised alcohol taxes. The effect was found to be nearly two to four times that of other prevention strategies, such as school programs or media campaigns. Stress: Some stress hormones are linked to alcohol abuse. If stress and anxiety levels are high, a person may consume alcohol in an attempt to blank out the upheaval. Peer drinking: People February 2019

whose friends drink regularly or excessively are more likely to drink too much. This can eventually lead to alcohol-related problems. Low self-esteem: Those with low self-esteem who have alcohol readily available are more likely to consume too much. Depression: People with depression may deliberately or unwittingly use alcohol as a means of self-treatment. On the other hand, consuming too much alcohol may increase the risk of depression, rather than reducing it. Media and advertising: In some countries, alcohol is portrayed as a glamorous, worldly, and cool activity. Alcohol advertising and media coverage of it may increase the risk by conveying the message that excessive drinking is acceptable. How the body processes (metabolizes) alcohol: People who need comparatively more alcohol to achieve an effect have a higher risk of eventually developing health problems related to alcohol. club

Diagnosis For AUD to be diagnosed in the U.S., the individual must meet the criteria laid out in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), published by the American Psychiatric Association (APS). The criteria include having a pattern of consumption that leads to considerable impairment or distress. At least three of the following criteria should have been present during the past 12 months: Alcohol tolerance: The person needs a large quantity of alcohol to feel intoxicated. However, when the liver is damaged and cannot metabolize the alcohol so well, this tolerance may drop. Damage to the central nervous system may also reduce tolerance levels. Withdrawal symptoms: When the individual abstains from alcohol or cuts down, they experience tremors, insomnia, nausea, or anxiety. They may drink more to avoid these symptoms. Beyond intentions: The

person drinks more alcohol, or over a longer period, than they intended. Unsuccessful attempts to cut down: The person is continuously trying to cut down alcohol consumption but does not succeed. They may have a persistent desire to cut down. Time consumed: The person spends a lot of time obtaining, using, or recovering from alcohol consumption. Withdrawal: The individual withdraws from recreational, social, or occupational activities that they previously participated in. Persistence: The person continues consuming alcohol, even though they know it is harming them physically and psychologically. Some signs and symptoms of alcohol abuse may be due to another condition. Ageing can lead to memory problems and falls, for example. A person may go to the doctor about a medical condition, such as a digestive problem, and not mention how much alcohol they consume. can make it difficult for a doctor to identify who might benefit from alcohol dependency screening. If a health worker suspect alcohol may be a problem, they may ask a series of questions. If the patient answers in a certain way, the doctor may then use a standardized questionnaire to find out more. heavy alcohol consumption.

Complications

Drinking alcohol usually elevates a person’s mood at first. However, a person who has been consuming unhealthy amounts of alcohol for a long time is likely to become sedated when they drink. This is because alcohol depresses the nervous system. Alcohol may undermine a person’s judgment. It can lower inhibitions and alter the drinker’s thoughts, emotions, and general behavior. Heavy regular drinking can seriously affect a person’s ability to coordinate their muscles and speak properly. Heavy binge drinking could lead to a coma. Eventually, regular heavy drinking may cause at least Edgars Club @ 4 years

one of the following problems: •Fatigue: The person feels tired most of the time. •Memory loss: Alcohol affects the short-term memory in particular. •Eye muscles: The eye muscles can become significantly weaker. •Liver diseases: There is a higher chance of developing hepatitis and cirrhosis, an irreversible and progressive condition. •Gastrointestinal complications: Gastritis or pancreas damage can occur. These will undermine the body’s ability to digest food, absorb certain vitamins, and produce hormones that regulate metabolism. • Hypertension: Regular heavy drinking is likely to raise blood pressure. • Heart problems: There is a higher risk of cardiomyopathy (damaged heart muscle), heart failure, and stroke. •Diabetes: There is a high risk of developing diabetes type 2, and people with diabetes have a high chance of complications if they regularly consume more alcohol than is recommended. Alcohol prevents

the release of glucose from the liver, resulting in hypoglycemia. If a person with diabetes is already using insulin to lower their blood sugar levels, hypoglycemia could have serious consequences. •Menstruation: Excessive consumption of alcohol can stop or disrupt menstruation. •Erectile dysfunction: There may be problems getting or sustaining an erection. •Fetal alcohol syndrome: Consuming alcohol during pregnancy increases the risk of birth defects. The newborn may have a small head, heart problems, shortened eyelids, and developmental and cognitive problems. •Thinning bones: Alcohol interferes with the production of new bone, leading to a thinning of the bones and an increased risk of fractures. •Nervous system problems: There may be numbness in the extremities, dementia, and confused or disordered thinking. • Cancer: There is a higher risk of developing several cancers, including cancer of the mouth. Some handy tips to consider when renovating your space.

The Small Space Rules Designers Wish You Would Break 74

T

he funny thing about interior design is that, much like art, you kind of have to learn the rules to break them. Or at least that’s what much of the design world would have you believe. But who makes up these “rules” in the first place? Plenty of decorators and design experts will tell you to go just with your gut when pulling together a space. But another strategy is to do exactly what conventional design wisdom would have you believe is wrong. And in the case of small spaces, this actually can make a room more successful, however counterintuitive that may sound. Want some proof? I asked a handful of design pros what classic small space tricks they don’t think work and what they’d suggest as an alternative. And you club

February 2019

know what? Breaking the rules isn’t just fun when it comes to design, it can actually pay off in the final product.

#1

to Break: Avoid Dark Paint Colors in Small Spaces. “This is definitely the number one cliché that is pretty much a myth at this point,” says an interior designer and feng shui expert. Natural light is a plus for any room, but it’s definitely not a prerequisite for a successful dark walled small room. “What is important is good, layered lighting,” says Thorne. She suggests strategically placed lamps, or uplights, to give darker walls washes of light. Make sure the rest of the different levels of lighting are addressed as well: ceiling, eye-level, and walls. If the lighting is good, any wall color can work. Edgars Club @ 4 years

There are many powder rooms that are effective examples of how dark walls plus good lighting equals a great dark, small room.

#2

to Break: Maximize the Feeling of Space and Light with Transparent Pieces We’re not saying throw out that lucite coffee table or glasstopped bar cart, because see-through furniture is visually light and can help a small space in measured doses. But maybe limit yourself to one or two clear pieces per room. “Overusing this trick can actually draw attention to the smaller scale of the room and make it challenging for the eye to focus,” says a real estate agent, interior decorator. Instead of transparency, think about creating negative space to achieve a more balanced room. Consider sofas on raised legs, an accent chair with a cutout in the back or coffee and accent tables that leverage metal work in a matte black or metallic finish to create contrast.

can be designed to fit both modern and traditional styles of home and come in a number of different shapes and sizes.

#4

to Break: Scale Your Furniture to Your Space. The logic seems simple enough—small space, small furniture, right? Wrong. “People often think using multiple pieces of small furniture in a small apartment will make it feel more spacious.”In contrast, it’s better to select fewer, larger pieces, specifically low-profile, modular furniture.” This strategy makes a space feel airier, especially when paired with a large, light-colored area rug. “The size of an area rug dictates the size of the visual space that you create, so don’t be afraid to go a little big here. It’ll create an illusion of grandness, and that’s never a bad thing when it comes to a small space.

#5

to Break: Go with Neutral Furnishings for the Win Designer Thandi sees a lot of monochromatic color schemes in small spaces, particularly to Break: Use Stools as Seats light colored neutrals. “While the goal is in Smaller Rooms. Many pros to brighten and enlarge the space, I think preach the “stool as chair” philosophy the opposite is true,” says Thandi. “Color for tight spaces, since stools are often can make all of the difference in allowing backless and have smaller footprints the eye to move through the space. Color than chairs do. But some designers may actually opens up a space because instead disagree. Some will say “Stools will simof seeing the space as one ‘place,’ the eye ply accentuate the fact that your room focuses on individual moments.” What is small and you can’t fit anything in it, she’s talking about here is the eye path especially if the stools themselves are that bold pops of color can create in a small and boxy. This will just make your room. The more ‘moments,” Thandi says, room look even more square.” Instead, the bigger the space feels, as your eyes we suggests compact armchairs or maybe travel around to these bright spots and a petite Chesterfield chair. “These chairs visually takes in the full picture.

to Break: Open Shelving Is Your Best Friend in a Tight Space: “One trick I’ve heard for small spaces that never really works is open shelving,” says designer Tino. “Some professionals will tell you to avoid bulky cabinets. However, the reality is, if items on open shelving units aren’t meticulously placed, this leaves a space looking cluttered and feeling disorganized.” The idea behind this is that seeing through to the walls makes a space seem larger. “While that’s not exactly untrue, a better rule of thumb for small space storage is ‘everything out of sight always.’ You’ll be better served by built-in cabinetry in the same colour as your walls.” This way, you have storage that conceals your messy stuff while essentially receding into the background.

#7

to Break: Always Paint a Small Space Ceiling White. According to Thorne, the white ceiling is way overdone, particularly in small spaces where people are afraid to experiment with color in the first place. “I’ve seen great small rooms with ceilings done in shell pink, robin’s egg blue, french blue,” says Thorne. “Ceilings don’t always have to be ‘refrigerator’ white.” Well-said. A good compromise color may be a whisper light blue, which you’ll often see on porches in the South. It’s about as close to “sky” as you can get.

#8

to Break: Use all the Vertical Space You Can “Just because space is limited doesn’t club

February 2019

mean you should leverage floor-to-ceiling bookcases or the tallest headboard you can find,” says Harris. You probably shouldn’t hang shelving or art every few inches all the way up to the ceiling either. Like most things in life, moderation here is key. “It is important to keep your ceiling height in mind and either choose one wall to go very vertical, perhaps with dramatic curtains or a built-in, and be more measured throughout the space.”

#9

to Break: Large-Scale Patterns are too Loud for Small Spaces. Believe it or not, bold patterns can actually make a space feel bigger. “This powder room is really small and narrow, but the lively paper actually expands the sense of space,” says Thandi. “The busyness of the walls totally distracts from the cozy feel.” Again, as is the case with darker paint colors, light is important here. But you can definitely pull off wallpaper in a power room or small space. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

#10

to Break: Keep it Simple Small spaces can still benefit from something unexpected that creates a “wow factor” or focal point. Interior designer Lebo likes to highlight her ceilings with a paint treatment or statement chandelier. “Another option is to choose a statement piece or point of interest in the room to draw the attention to it,” says Lebo. “This will take away from the sense of smallness.” Depending on the room’s theme, Lebo says it can be a dreamy canopied daybed, a teepee, etc. Edgars Club @ 4 years

hen we think about family travel we usually picture happy smiling faces at a park, kids playing on the swimming pool side… More adventurous families go hiking or take the kids camping. A family road trip to Namibia is not the most obvious choice and many families don’t even consider it. Yes, you can travel to Africa with your family! You can easily explore South Africa or Namibia with kids.

78

Why Namibia is the most family-friendly African country . Namibia is one of the safest countries in Africa: You really don’t have to worry about safety when traveling to Namibia with kids. Well, not more than anywhere else anyway. Of course, you have to use your common sense just as you would do anywhere else. Don’t travel at night (this is mainly because of the gravel roads and wild animals), watch out for pickpockets in Windhoek, don’t leave valuables in the car, stay in the car when driving

through Etosha or other parks with dangerous animals, and be very careful on the road. In fact, driving on gravel roads is probably the biggest danger tourists face

just fine.

. There is no malaria in the tourist areas and no yellow fever in Namibia: You need to take malaria pills and get

to worry about malaria. Theoretically there is a chance of malaria mosquitos being active in Etosha during the rain season, but if you travel in the dry cooler months (most tourists do), you really don’t need malaria pills. Of course, check before you go as the situation might change, but as long as I have known, Namibia tourist areas have been malaria-free. Overall, there are not many flies or mosquitos in Namibia, and certainly not in the dry season. Nothing compared to Tanzania or Australia’s Red Centre…

3

. Namibia is very thinly populated. This may be a negative aspect to some, but to me it’s what makes Namibia so special. And safe. The only negative side to this is the fact that doctors and hospitals can be several hours driving depending on where you are. It’s probaEdgars Club @ 4 years

bly a good idea to take a small first-aid kit and any medicine you think you might need on the road.

4

. Namibians speak English, but you also get plenty of chances to interact with other cultures and languages English is the official language in Namibia and

even though it’s a native language to less than 1% of the population, it is used everywhere. Many local tribes living in rural Namibia don’t speak English, but people are extremely friendly and willing to interact. One of the advantages of traveling is that you get to know so many different cultures, habits, and see how people live in different parts of

the world. If you are willing, you can find plenty of such opportunities in Namibia. Himba, San, Damara people – these are just a few examples of different ethnic groups you can meet here.

5

. Namibia has plenty of wildlife and beautiful nature. Seeing safari animals is probably the main reason why most people travel to Africa. You will not be disappointed as there is plenty of wildlife in Namibia and you will see it daily, often just next to the road. Abundant wildlife will be a big hit with kids of any age! Etosha National Park is, of course, the best place to watch wild African animals, but there are many private nature reserves as well. Some of them have animals which you will not find in Etosha, like hippos or crocodiles. But Namibia has more than February 2019

that. Seal colony with hundreds of thousands of seals – check. Thousands of wild flamingos – check. Dolphins – check. Whales – check. Pangolin, aardvark, meerkat… The list is endless. Namibia has beautiful nature like Fish River Canyon and Sossusvlei red sand dunes, to name just a few.

evening, and they are quite affordable in Namibia (and young children are often free). It’s a pretty standard ‘formula’ which looks something like this: you take a short safari ride in the late afternoon looking for animals and the ride ends at a beautiful location, usually high on the hill, from where you can watch the most spectacular African sunsets while sipping a drink and chatting with fellow travellers. Some lodges have sundowner walks and depending on the location they can be just spectacular. On foot or by car, sundowner is something you just have to do in Namibia. Our family loved them: kids – for the ride in the jeep and for the snacks, my husband – for not having to drive for a change and for the drinks, and I couldn’t get enough of the amazing African sunsets. We went on many sundowners during our Edgars Club @ 4 years

trip to Namibia and it’s some of the best memories of our vacation.

8

. Food is very good and safe in Namibia I cannot think of one bad experience related to food in Namibia. It’s absolutely delicious anywhere you go. Also, all the lodges we stayed at made an effort to prepare special meals for the children. Now that I think of it, one of our younger boys got a bit sick after a week in Namibia, but traveller’s diarrhoea is not something you can avoid completely anywhere in the world.

9

. Quality of accommodations is very high in Namibia You really don’t have to worry about the quality of accommodation in Namibia. Depending on your budget, you can find finest luxury lodges, simple hotels, or camping facilities, but in general it’s way better than you would expect. It still amazes me how well-equipped and luxurious most lodges are, especially if you take into account that they are often literally in the middle of Edgars Club @ 4 years

nowhere. Traveling to Namibia with kids your biggest challenge might be finding family rooms. Some lodges have them, some don’t, some only have a few. The earlier you book your family trip to Namibia, the more possibilities you have.

10

. Summer school holiday (July and August) is the perfect time to travel to Namibia. If you have school-going children like we do, you probably face the same problem once in a while. You find a beautiful place you want to travel to, but it’s just too hot (or too cold, or too wet…) in the summer months. Christmas is too busy and too expensive, and the rest of the holidays are too short… Namibia, however, can be perfectly visited in July and August. Namibian winter is a dry cold season which means pleasant daytime temperatures. Animal viewing is also at its best in dry months as water is scarce and animals gather around water holes.

11

Live Travel

. Namibia is not very expensive Namibia is not a very expensive destination, although – as everywhere else – a lot depends on you and mostly on the choice of accommodation. The biggest cost is the flight and the car rental, unless you decide to fly around the country instead of driving – that is possible, but can be quite expensive. Food and activities are relatively cheap in Namibia. Now is a very good time to travel to the region as SA Rand to which Namibian currency is fixed is very weak and so you get more for your money.

12

. Namibian roads are reasonably good so you can travel individually: Namibia can be easily visited individually, a road trip is the best way to explore Namibia. There are only a few tar roads in Namibia, but the quality of main gravel roads is usually very good, you just have to adjust the driving speed accordingly.

ith Stalin’s achievement of total control, two important developments took place with regard to the international position of the Soviet Union: 1. The Soviets achieved domination of the Comintern 2. Stalin reversed the policy of a ‘united front’ in the expansion of Communist power.

82

THE COMINTERN Opposition had been generally allowed within the Comintern and the Soviet Communist Party until 1927-9. However, as the 1920s passed, dissenting voices encountered an increasingly difficult time. In the Comintern, as in the Party itself, the Right Opposition was to continue for two more years then the Left. Bukharin, the most important Rightist and President of the Comintern, attended the VI Congress of the Comintern in 1928. Although by this stage he was powerless before Stalin, he kept his position until 1929 when Molotov took over the role for a while before Dmitry Manuilsky was appointed to head the Comintern. THE VI CONGRESS OF THE COMINTERN club

February 2019

Stalin directed the VI Congress of the Comintern which declared that capitalism was preparing an assault on the Soviet Union. This was regarded as an effect of increasing contradictions and weaknesses in the ‘imperialist’ camp. All forms of bourgeois political activity were to be attacked under the slogan “class against class.” These bourgeois activities were regarded as comprising social democracy which subverted the proletariat from within, and fascism which sought to enslave it from without. The main enemy was identified as the Social Democrats. COMMUNISM AND GERMANY: Most communist parties outside the USSR were tiny, only the German party being large enough to independently influence affairs. Furthermore, Germany was, since the ending of the ‘united front’ policy, the only state in which Communists could achieve anything concrete without direct Soviet help. The German republic was attacked by the Communists and Nazis who in the 1928 Reichstag elections won 54 seats and 13 seats respectively. Of the republic’s defend-

ers, the Social Democrats were the strongest single party, and many of its important members wanted to ally with the Communists against the growth of Nazism. THE ATTITUDE OF THE COMMUNISTS:German Communists took the anti-Social Democrat line of the VI Congress of the Comintern. They joined the Nazis and the rest of the extreme Right in 192930 to publicly condemn the Young Plan which required the payment of reparations.Opposed the Social Democrats’ overtures for better relations with the victorious powers of the First World War. March-April 1931 the Eleventh Plenum of the Comintern declared that the Social Democrats were the most active political party in preparation for a war against the Soviet Union. Communist leaders also supported the demand by Nazis and Nationalists for a referendum to remove the Prussian government which was the mainstay of the republic’s strength. Although there was a referendum, the proposal failed. The Communists won 89 seats and the Nazis 230 seats in the elections Edgars Club @ 4 years

of July1932. Followed in a few months by co-operation by the two parties in the Berlin transport strike. The Social Democrats made a last attempt to persuade the Communists to ally with them in February 1933 to stop Hitler. However the party leaders believed that it was essential that the Nazis did take power: ‘Then in four weeks the whole working class will be united under the leadership of the Communist Party.’ Following the March elections Hitler forced the passing of the Enabling Law which gave him total power for four years; time enough to implement “gleichschaltung” or “forcible co-ordination” to form the totalitarian state, and with it the destruction of the German Communist Party (KPD). ANALYSING THE FAILURE OF GERMAN COMMUNISM: . Trotsky’s view Trotsky, the Social Democrats and others said that the rise of Hitler should be blamed on the Communists due to their refusal to ally with the Social Democrats and their co-operation with Hitler.

. Franz Borkenau’s view: Borkenau says

that had the Communists supported the Social Democrats, many Communist voters among the unemployed would have switched allegiance to the Nazis because really radical. Communist voters would not support an alliance with the status quo. In the end the Communist Party was unable to mobilise all of its voters against the Prussian government, so Borkenau’s argument is on shaky ground.

3

. The ‘Bolshevik’ view On December 31 1933, ‘Bolshevik’, the Russian Party’s theoretical organ said ‘In Germany the proletarian revolution is nearer to realization than in any other country.’ FACTORS TO BE CONSIDERED • Even if the German Communists could have acted differently, Moscow was not willing to allow them to do so. • The VI Congress’s anti-Social Democrats stance had a solid basis on which to work in that the two totalitarian parties found common ground in their hatred of liberal government and the laws that supported it. • Thus the Communists’ policy is difficult to understand in that their stance

was always risky in the extreme given that if the Weimar Republic fell then whichever totalitarian party was victorious, it would inevitably destroy the other and the Communists predicted that it would be the Nazis who would take power. MOSCOW’S INTERPRETATION • In April 1933, Soviet spokesman Eugene Varga said that Hitler’s assumption of power had resulted from bourgeois terror at the rise of german Communism. • The Soviets believed that “history” would sweep Hitler aside. • Their inability to accept that Hitler could remain in power was an attempt to justify Comintern policy. A LAST NOTE • Even though the Nazis destroyed the German Communists, they declared their desire for good relations with Moscow, and in May 1933 ratified the renewal of the 1926 neutrality treaty with the Soviets (this had been pending since 1931). • By the end of 1933 Moscow felt it necessary to publicly refer to the Nazis’ persistence in using the anti-Soviet propaganda line of Mein Kampf. How to stop Making Excuses

84 84

Splitting your priorities into a single major focus and several minor focuses makes it far harder to put out excuses. Whenever a conflict arises where I would normally offer an excuse, I can simply think of my priorities.

“I don’t know how.” club

February 2019

“It probably wouldn’t have worked anyways.” “I’m too busy.” How often do you catch yourself making excuses. Instead of doing something, you come up with ways to explain your inaction. Excuse-makers are usually seen as weak, lazy or cowardly. I believe this is an unfair generalization.

We all make excuses once in a while. Sometimes we make excuses and other times we stop rationalizing and take action. I’m sure most of us can remember times when we procrastinated and wasted days before starting a project. I’m also sure most of us can remember times we started immediately, Edgars Club @ 4 years

and finished ahead of schedule. The differences between these two cases could be described as a difference of willpower. When you procrastinated, you lacked willpower. But that isn’t helpful. If willpower is outside your direct control, then claiming willpower as a solution isn’t going to work. Instead, I believe that the answer to stop making excuses lies has two steps: 1. Organizing your priorities. 2. Breaking large, uncomfortable steps into manageable pieces. Organizing Your Priorities What’s more important to you right now? Expanding your finances? Succeeding academically? Improving the quality of your relationships? Excuse making is the result of conflicting priorities. When you don’t have a system for making decisions, the tendency is to just go with whatever feels best in the moment. You can clear this up by defining what your priorities are. The purpose Edgars Club @ 4 years

is to aid when one event conflicts with another. If you have to decide between working on a school project or going on a date, you need to look at your priorities. Which ranks higher? Relationships or academic success. Priorities clears up the need for excuse making, since it simplifies decisions with conflicting values. With priorities it’s important to define your major focus and minor focuses. A major focus should get the benefit of any extra attention you have to devote to it. Minor focuses shouldn’t be abandoned, but your goal is to put them on autopilot so most your mental energies are devoted to your major focus. To give an example, my major focus right now is this business. Earlier this year I realized that if I put a concentrated effort, I could tip the slide to where this business could support me full-time. I’m close to there now, but not quite over the line. My minor focuses are

inspirational my health, relationships, social life, Toastmasters and school. These minor focuses continue to be worked on while I improve my income. But most my mental attention is going into ways I can expand this website and offer more value. Splitting your priorities into a single major focus and several minor focuses makes it far harder to put out excuses. Whenever a conflict arises where I would normally offer an excuse, I can simply think of my priorities. When priorities are clear, it is difficult to justify departing from them. Breaking Down Discomfort Mixed-up priorities are only a part of excusemaking. Unwillingness to step into uncomfortable situations is another. Success in almost any effort requires taking risks and facing failure. Becoming a great public speaker requires you get up in front of a big audience and possibly deliver a terrible speech. . Stop comparing yourself to others. The truth is, other people are probably comparing themselves to you. Also, when you are comparing yourself to someone else, you are probably only seeing part of the whole picture and filling in the rest with a lot of assumptions. You can honestly never know what a person’s life is really like by seeing them from the outside so you can never truly compare yourself to anyone else. If you are making an excuse to not try something new because you are comparing yourself to others who are experts in the field, remember that they once stood in your shoes and were able to get where they are today. club

February 2019

What results is excusemaking. You find easier tasks to do and excuse your procrastination. Rationalize away the feeling that you don’t feel comfortable going forward. The fix here is to break down uncomfortable steps. Laziness is just another manifestation of fear. So if you can’t take the next step, break it into smaller parts you can handle. If you can’t get up on stage to speak, try delivering your speech in front of a few friends. If you can’t make a cold call, try calling someone you already know. Sometimes, however, a step can’t be broken down. You either need to face it entirely or not at all. In these situations you need to get leverage on yourself. Give a friend $100 of yours to hold onto until you follow through. Make a public commitment. Any of these steps will work. The next time you catch yourself making an excuse, ask yourself?

Does this fit within my priorities? If it doesn’t and you still find yourself making excuses ask yourself if there is any way you could push yourself through the next step.

2

. Stop fearing the unknown. Sure, things may go wrong. But, things may also go very right. The unknown can be scary, but that does not mean that it is necessarily bad. So many good things can come in your life from taking chances into areas that are unknown to you. You can’t just assume that anything that is unknown to you is going to turn out to be a negative thing.

3

. Stop blaming others for your misfortune. One of the most destructive things you can do in life is to play the blame game. It is the basis for a considerable amount of frustration and unhappiness in people’s lives. The blame game entails blaming someone else for something that happened to you that Edgars Club @ 4 years

live smart health watch was undesirable, and staying convinced that it was someone else’s fault instead of being proactive and making the necessary changes to resolve a situation. This often stems from irrational thinking and is not healthy for you or for the person you are blaming.

4

.Take responsibility. There are two components of taking responsibility. One is accepting personal responsibility and the other is accepting indirect responsibility. Taking personal responsibility refers to taking ownership of your own actions and their consequences. If you are unable to accept responsibility for your actions or mistakes, it is likely very hard to gain the respect of other people. Indirect responsibility involves moving beyond yourself to take necessary action to help other people. Having this type of responsibility reveals a factor of your character. However, some may think of an excuse to not help someone else, perhaps

Edgars Club @ 4 years

assuming that someone else will do it. This is not a good way to gain the respect of other people.

5

.Take action. Part of taking action is taking risks. You may have big plans that you can imagine are great in theory, but never plan on actually following through with. Stop making excuses and take the action that is needed to achieve the goals you want in life and create success for yourself.

6

. Set small, attainable goals. Setting large goals may seem so overwhelming that you don’t even know where to start. Further, you may start working towards your long-term goal and find that you are not getting anywhere fast and give up. Instead, break down your ultimate goal into many smaller goals that are attainable so you can make progress that you can actually see. Every time you meet one of these smaller goals, you will be more motivated to continue on to your

ultimate goal. For example, let’s say you aren’t much of a runner, but you want to run a marathon. You may start out by running one mile and then think that running 26.2 miles is an unattainable goal and you should just quit. Rather than starting with the ultimate goal of running a marathon, start with aiming to complete a 5k. This is an attainable goal for someone who does not have a lot of running experience. Once that goal is complete, move up to a 10k. Keep increasing this goal until you reach your ultimate goal of finishing a marathon.

7

. Learn from your mistakes. Not only can you learn what not to do when you make a mistake, but you can also analyze what went wrong and figure out how you can do it better in the future. All mistakes are learning opportunities, no matter how big or small the mistake may be. Often, trial and error is the best way to work something out. February 2019

. Don’t focus on your weaknesses. If you have a few weaknesses, be aware of them, but do not focus on them. Rather, focus on your strengths and the things that you have to offer that other people do not. You can even delegate certain tasks to other people to help you bridge the gap in places where you know you will not be able to do a perfect job.

9

.You have the power to change. You do. You just have to be motivated to do so. You can’t feel defeated or complacent with your life just being “okay.” Without making excuses, you have the power to change anything in your life. club

February 2019

If you don’t feel like you can do it on your own, seek help from other people in order to achieve your goals and get the results you are looking for. Never think that you simply cannot change an aspect of your life.

10

. Self-efficacy When you are faced with a challenge, do you feel like you can handle it or do you come up with some excuses to avoid it? Perhaps you have a tendency to doubt your own abilities to rise to the challenge and overcome the hardships that life throws your way? Having self-efficacy means you have a strong belief in your own abilities to handle various situations. This can play an important role in how you feel about yourself and whether or not you are able to achieve the results you want.

'a' level GEOGRAPHY

SEVERE WEATHER & RELATED PHENOMENA

E

xtremes of precipitation and temperature cause most of our weather hazards. Extremes of air movement surprisingly create more minor effects.

Tropical cyclones These are classified differently around the world, cyclones hit Southern Asia (between June and November), the Willy Willies hit Australia (between January and March), and typhoons hit the western Pacific (between July and October). Typically these generate winds of between 40 and 119 km/hour. Hurricanes are also a form of tropical cyclone. The intensity of the hurricane and the extreme effects they have had on the Gulf coast of the eastern seaboard of the USA ensure Edgars Club @ 4 years

that this form of cyclone has been well researched and documented. 18% of the world’s population live on coastal areas that are under threat from tropical cyclones. On average 20,000 people/year lose their lives to tropical cyclones. Hurricanes Certain atmospheric and ocean conditions seem to be at the root of their formation. The following develops this ‘formation’ theme. Wind spins around an eye of 25 to 50 km this decreases in size as hurricanes speed up. • Generally these intense low-pressure systems (less than 920 Mb is common) form between 30° N and S, in an area called the Intertropical Convergence Zone. With Coriolis Effect

at its greatest in the tropics the systems’ rotation can be easily initiated (winds in the order of 119 to 300 km/hr are common). The ITCZ is where convergent air meets near the equator. This area is intermittent and can vary its position. • The sea in this area is well heated, and exceeds the minimum 26° to 27°C necessary (between August and October) for latent heat to be released (because of condensation of water vapour) to strengthen the hurricane (relative humidity of 60% is common). The ocean then provides the initiating and sustaining energy for hurricanes. They quickly ‘die’ once they move onto the land. The high levels of moisture held also point to a sea origin (typically in the order February 2019

club

These clouds further fuel the hurricane as latent heat energy exchanges moisture from gas to liquid. Spinning weathersub-systems develop all around the main hurricane mass.

The effects of hurricanes include: • storm surges – it is this phenomenon that potentially is the biggest killer. Hurricanes distribute energy polewards. • damage to property (the power of the hurricane is such it turns property instantly into matchwood. e.g. Hurricane Andrew, in

Florida, left 250000 homeless) • agricultural damage • huge insurance claims – when Hurricane Andrew struck in 1992, 25% of damage was paid for through insurance (some $5.6 billion), the federal government picked up the other $19 billion bill! Between 1900 and 1991 there were 152 direct hurricane

hits on the USA. • refugees – the 250 000 that Hurricane Andrew left homeless moved temporarily into other areas of Florida and into neighbouring states • property – if all the debris from the properties that hurricane Andrew destroyed were to be piled up it would have towered 300 stories high! • tourism – for Florida, hurricanes create a unique situation. It is a major tourist destination. Florida has suffered three of the five deadliest hits in the USA this century. Tourists are rightly wary of holidaying during the hurricane season in this state. Examiners look for a good mix of process and factual understanding. Simple Edgars Club @ 4 years

diagrams like this convey vast amounts of information extremely rapidly. Very occasionally hurricanes are re-vitalised in the mid-latitudes and therefore can reach the shores of Britain, though in an extremely modified form. Newspapers are a good source of up-to-date information. AS questions frequently use this topic information. Tornadoes These are a concentration of cyclonically spinning air (about 160 km across), found overland, rather than over water. Most often a visible cloud forms from a large cumulo-nimbus origin. The tremendous rotations are initiated by rapid conver-

gence at the base of the cumulo-nimbus cloud, as rapid updraughts develop. Tornadoes are common over the mid-west and southern states of the USA during the heat of early summer afternoons. Tornadoes are an increasingly common and observed feature in the UK, e.g. The Selly Oak twister of summer 1999, but perhaps more dramatic and bizarre was the Selsey Tornado, of 1999. N.B. Tornadoes may be a by-product of hurricane development. CASE STUDY The SE Asian Monsoon The word monsoon means season. The SE Asian monsoon is the major disturber of the February 2019

92

Causes • Pressure and wind The displacement of pressure and wind is caused by the direct heating of the Earth, this causes the land to heat up disproportionately to the sea. The Earth also cools disproportionately to the sea. • The ITCZ/ITD (inter tropical discontinuity) Seasonal shifts of the ITD and its windy belts. • Mountain influence Without the mountains, patterns of rainfall would be different in India. • Concentrations of CO2 Reduced CO2 over India, because the effect of uplift over the Himalayas causes less heat to be absorbed, which leads to cooling. • Jet-stream positions In India the seasonal changes brought about by the above cause two markedly different monsoon periods. The winter monsoon Westerly jets split around the Tibetan Plateau. Declub

February 2019

scending air causes high pressure over central Asia resulting in out-blowing northeast winds across Asia, clear skies, and little rain. Sunny weather results. The summer monsoon Beginning in the spring and finishing about June. The phases of the summer monsoon are: • in March the northern jet dominates the area • the sun is directly over India • the ITD moves to an area south of the Himalayas • low pressure moves northwards – the so-called monsoon trough • one part of the trough moves west over India, the other to the east over the Bay of Bengal, they meet and join over northern India in June • low pressure continues to deepen and develop over the area and the North Indian Ocean. Under the intense isolation of the area’s clear skies, warm moist air starts the cycle of the so-called monsoon rains • lots of warm moist air is drawn in over India from the North Indian Ocean: intense rainfall results.

The monsoon brings drought-breaking rainfall and wind, and invariably initiates devastating subtropical cyclones (e.g. Orissa, India 1999). Impacts Agricultural yields increase during the ‘good’ monsoon years. This has to be balanced against flooding and loss of life. How Indian monsoon rains are caused This video is presented by Kate Humble and young physicist Helen Czerski go to India to explain what causes monsoons. The difference between the way solids and liquids respond to the Sun’s heat is explained. Helen experiences a monsoon hail storm in Kerala. Using graphics and real footage she shows that it’s the differences in heating between land and sea that is critical. They are a vital part of India’s climate because 80% of India’s rain falls during monsoons. First broadcast on BBC One in March 2012 as part of the series Orbit: Earth’s Extraordinary Journey. Sexual Harassment

AND BULLYING What you should know and how to handle yourself in this situation

E

ven if you’ve never been bullied or harassed, chances are you know someone who has. Harassment can be a big problem for kids and teens, especially when smartphones, online messaging, and social media sites make it easy for bullies to do their thing. When bullying behavior involves unwanted sexual comments, suggestions, advances, or threats to another person, it’s called Edgars Club @ 4 years

sexual harassment or sexual bullying. Here’s what you need to know and what you can do if you or someone you care about is being sexually harassed or bullied. What Are Sexual Bullying and Harassment? Just like other kinds of bullying, sexual harassment can involve comments, gestures, actions, or attention that is intended to hurt, offend, or intimidate another person.

With sexual harassment, the focus is on things like a person’s appearance, body parts, sexual orientation, or sexual activity. Sexual harassment may be verbal (like making comments about someone), but it doesn’t have to be spoken. Bullies may use technology to harass someone sexually (like sending inappropriate text messages, pictures, or videos). Sometimes sexual harassment can even get physical when someone February 2019

club

93

downtime teen talk tries to kiss or touch someone that does not want to be touched.

94

Sexual harassment doesn’t just happen to girls. Boys can harass girls, but girls also can harass guys, guys may harass other guys, and girls may harass other girls. Sexual harassment isn’t limited to people of the same age, either. Adults sometimes sexually harass young people (and, occasionally, teens may harass adults, though that’s pretty rare). But most of the time, when sexual harassment happens to teens, it’s being done by people in the same age group. Sexual harassment and bullying are very similar — they both involve unwelcome or unwanted sexual comments, attention, or physical contact. So why call one thing by two different names? Sometimes schools and other places use one term or the other for legal reasons. For instance, a school document may use the term “bullying” to describe what’s against school policy, while a law might use the term “harclub

February 2019

assment” to define what’s against the law. Some behaviors might be against school policy and also against the law. For the person who is being targeted, though, it doesn’t make much difference if something is called bullying or harassment. This kind of behavior is upsetting no matter what it’s called. Like anyone who’s being bullied, people who are sexually harassed can feel threatened and scared and experience a great deal of emotional stress.

What Behaviors Count? Some pictures, images, jokes, language, and contact are called “inappropriate” for a reason. If a behavior or interaction makes you uncomfortable or upset, talk to a trusted adult. It may fall into the sexual harassment or bullying category. Sexual harassment or bullying can include: • making sexual jokes, comments, or gestures to or about someone • spreading sexual rumors (in person, by text, or

online) • writing sexual messages about people on bathroom stalls or in other public places • showing someone inappropriate sexual pictures or videos • asking someone to send you naked pictures of herself or himself (“nudes”) • posting sexual comments, pictures, or videos on social networks like Facebook, or sending explicit text messages • making sexual comments or offers while pretending to be someone else online • touching, grabbing, or pinching someone in a deliberately sexual way • pulling at someone’s clothing and brushing up against them in a purposefully sexual way • asking someone to go out over and over again, even after the person has said no Sending sexual messages or images by text, or “sexting,” is not a good idea for many reasons. Sexting can lead to problems for you and the person getting the text, even when you are dating or in a relationship Edgars Club @ 4 years

with that person. In some cases these messages can be considered harassment or bullying and can bring very serious consequences. Also, messages or images you intend to be private can get into the wrong hands and be used to embarrass, intimidate, or humiliate. Even if you send someone’s picture just to one other person, it can be forwarded to many other people or posted online for the world to see. Forcing another person into doing things he or she doesn’t want to do, such as kissing, oral sex, or intercourse, goes beyond sexual harassment or bullying. Forcing someone to do sexual things is sexual assault or rape, and it’s a serious crime. Flirting or Harassment? Sometimes people who make sexual jokes or comments laugh off their behavior as flirting, and you might be tempted to do the same. So what’s the difference between flirting and sexual harassment? Here are three examples of flirting versus harassment: Edgars Club @ 4 years

1

downtime teen talk

. You and your crush have been flirting and you both start making jokes about sexting. Your crush asks if you’d ever do that. You say, “No way!” With normal flirting, that’s the end of it. But if your crush starts pressuring you to send sexual pictures, then it’s getting into harassment territory . Someone in class says your new jeans look great. That’s a compliment. But if they say your new jeans make your butt look great, or they make comments about specific body parts, that’s crossing the line. . Someone you’re not attracted to asks you to go to a dance. It seems harsh to say you’re not interested, so you make up an excuse. The person asks a couple more times but eventually gets the hint. This is a normal social interaction. But if the person hits on you in a creepy way — like making references to sex or your body, sending sexual messages, always showing up wherever you happen to be, or trying to touch you, hug you, or bother you — that’s harassment.

2 3

Some things may be awkward, but they don’t count as harassment. A guy who blurts out a sex-related swearword because he spills his lunch tray isn’t likely to be trying to harass or bother you. But if someone is deliberately doing or saying sexual things that make you uncomfortable, it’s probably sexual harassment.

Not sure? Ask yourself, “Is this something I wanted to happen or I want to continue happening? How does it make me feel?” If it doesn’t feel right, talk to a parent, teacher, guidance counselor, or someone else you trust. How to Handle Sexual Harassment If you think you’re being harassed, don’t blame yourself. People who harass or bully can be very manipulative. They are often good at blaming the other person — and even at making victims blame themselves. But no one has the right to sexually harass or bully anyone else, no matter what. There is no such thing as “asking for it.” February 2019

club

95

96

There’s no single “right” way to respond to sexual harassment. Each situation is unique. It often can be helpful to start by telling the person doing the harassing to stop. Let him or her know that this behavior is not OK with you. Sometimes that will be enough, but not always. The harasser may not stop. He or she might even laugh off your request, tease you, or bother you more. That’s why it’s important to share what’s happening with an adult you trust. Is there a parent, relative, coach, or teacher you can talk to? More and more schools have a designated person who’s there to talk about bullying issues, so find out if there’s someone at your school. Most schools have a sexual harassment policy or a bullying policy to protect you. If you find the adult you talk to doesn’t take your complaints seriously at first, you may have to repeat yourself or find someone else who will listen. There’s no doubt it can feel embarrassing to talk about sexual harassment at first. club

February 2019

But that uncomfortable feeling quickly wears off after a minute or so of conversation. In most cases, telling someone sooner leads to faster results and fewer problems down the line, so it’s worth it. It can help to keep a record of the events that have happened. Write down dates and short descriptions in a journal. Save any offensive pictures, videos or texts, as evidence. That way you’ll have them if your school or family has to take legal action. To avoid going through feeling upset all over again, save this evidence someplace where you don’t have to see it every day. If You See Something, Say Something: Bystanders play an important role in stopping bullying and sexual harassment. If you see someone who is being harassed, take action. If it feels safe and natural to speak up, say, “Come on, let’s get out of here” to the person you see getting bullied or bothered. You probably shouldn’t try to change the bully’s behavior by

yourself, but it is OK to let the bully know people are watching and will be getting involved. If you don’t feel you can say something at the time you see the incident, report the event to a teacher. This isn’t snitching. It’s standing up for what’s right. No one deserves to be harassed. You could also talk to the victim afterward and offer support. Say that you think what happened is not OK and offer some ideas for dealing with harassment. If You Suspect Something: You won’t always see sexual harassment or bullying happening. A friend who is going through it might not talk about it. Sometimes people show signs that something’s wrong even if they don’t talk about it. Maybe a normally upbeat friend seems sad, worried, or distracted. Perhaps a friend has lost interest in hanging out or doing stuff. Maybe someone you know avoids school or has falling grades. Changes like these are often signs that something’s going on. Ask if everything’s OK. Edgars Club @ 4 years
