Condolences Our Heartfelt Those we love remain with us For love itself lives on, And cherished memories never fade Because a loved one’s gone. Those we love can never be More than a thought apart, Far as long as there is memory, They’ll live on in the heart.

Although no words can really help to ease the loss you bear, Just know that you are very close in every thought and prayer. Those we love don’t go away, They walk beside us every day, Unseen, unheard, but always near, Still loved, still missed and still very dear. Edgars Zimbabwe would like to extend our condolences to all those Club Members and Edgars Customers who have lost their loved ones. We sincerely hope that the help we were able to offer through the Edgars Hospital Cash Plan and Mi-Way helped ease your burden. We have lost 1033 members in the past 5 years. PULLING ALL STOPS FOR MAGICAL LOVE To celebrate Valentine’s Day, Edgars partnered Holiday Inn Zimbabwe who were hosting couples for dinner at their 3 hotels located in Mutare, Bulawayo and Harare. To add to the fun, Edgars ran a Love Notes competition on social media and also gave away vouchers to the best dressed couples on the day. The social media competition was themed “love notes” and this was to be presented as a written love letter. fashion, so while you at it do your part and save the environment by recycling clothes – Hand me downs. Most of us grew up on these, I for one had to hand down clothes that I outgrew to my younger cousins and I also benefited from older cousins … and so on and so forth.
24
1
– SAVE – Kids grow right under your nose… in no time you will be wondering what happened to my little munchkin? It is advisable to buy basics from value chain stores because kids grow up fast. Try and AVOID BUYING KIDS CLOTHES FROM BOUTIQUES unless you are a millionaire. Alternatively buy your kid’s clothes in thrift stores so that you can both, save your money and get your kid to stand out from the rest. We advocate for sustainable club
April 2019
2
– TRY IT BEFORE YOU BUY – I absolutely hated ill-fitting clothes and still do now and my gran had a knack for buying everything oversize…sigh! Take your child along when buying clothes for them to see if the clothes suit him/her.
3
– MORE – Kids will be kids. Naturally they must play and get dirty and obviously they need more changes per day than adults. Always buy Twin or Triple packs of the same favourite T-shirt or shorts in different colours.
4
- FOLLOW THE LATEST TRENDS – Be the cool mom, dad or uncle who knows the big fashion fads for kids. It’s important for kids to be relevant to their age group and time. Failure to align Edgars Club @ 5 years
trend analysis fashion may adversely affect their self-esteem or may result in bullying. Just be wise when picking trends and avoid the ones that are not child friendly like micro mini skirts/shorts and the like.
5
– BUY STATEMENT PIECES - Try to find clothes that will fit multiple outfits. Basically clothes you can dress up and down. This way you won’t have to break the bank in order for your child to stand out. Buy clothes with one or two colors and then be creative when combining those clothing pieces. That way you’ll create your kid’s special style.
6
– COMFORT IS KEY - This is a simple tip, just make sure your child is feeling comfortable with the clothes you choose for them. So many parents spend too much money on pretty clothes that their kids hate wearing. What makes a child stand out is the way they wear their clothes. If they wear them confidently, they’ll always look beautiful. This is a piece of advice that every parent should listen to, because it’s so simple and costs literally nothing. Edgars Club @ 5 years
7
– GET CREATIVE - Buying an expensive and branded backpack won’t make your kid stand out. You’ll just spend too much money on it and your child will probably overgrow it in a year or two. Buying or making unique backpack accessories is what will make your child’s style stand out. We’ve all seen those cute kid’s wallets with chains, so you can attach one to your child’s backpack. Nowadays, stickers for clothes and backpacks are growing in popularity. Find few of the ones that fit your child’s style and combine them in your own special way.
8
– REFLECT THEIR PERSONALITY – Certain things like character are born with, so work with your child in order to avoid conflict and confusion. It is very true, clothes make a man, so dress your child in clothes that reflect their personality and individualistic side. April 2019

here’s one print that’s dominating the fashion world, and that’s checks. You’ll find the design frequently used on blazers, shirts, pants - well almost everything, and the detail has graduated from suit sets to asymmetrical tops and breezy skirts. It’s 2019, and plaid shows no signs of checking out. Especially not after Burberry revived its signature check with a vengeance this season. Why not pick up a gallant Prince of Wales check suit? Whether pencil skirt or slip dress, we’ll happily take the check this year. It’s time to be bold and mix the pattern with your other favorites e.g. florals.

nitwear season is upon us, which means — despite shorter days, darker nights, and waking up in the morning becoming increasingly difficult — it’s time to wrap up and stay cozy. We’re focusing on major knitwear trends: brights, stripes, and cardigans. While the fisherman’s knit and camel cashmere numbers are mainstays in most wardrobes, this time around, keeping warm looks slightly more fun. Sure, the hoodie may still rule streetwear, but look out for the humble cable knit cardigan which has gotten a makeover this season club

eeling the chill yet? If there’s one positive to the colder weather it’s the opportunity to immerse yourself in knitwear again. Beyond the handsome comfort of the fabric, knit remains a steadfast sartorial hit since its inception into mainstream fashion as a cool musthave asset, returning year after year to make waves in menswear. Knitwear’s adaptability adds to its enduring appeal. It’s one of those rare textiles that’s as impressive worn over a shirt in the office as it is inside a tailored suit for those seasonal parties or even a winter wedding. Once dry, the cast it creates to hold the clumped curls together can be broken to release the clusters of curls from sticking to each other, allowing movement. Gel provides shine from light reflection and can usually last 1-4 days depending on the hair type. Pomades are designed for sculpted styles like ponytails, updos, or other coiffed looks.

After all, our skin is our biggest organ and everything we use will be absorbed and transferred to baby – it’s a lot to think about! INGREDIENTS TO LOOK FOR WHEN CHOOSING PREGNANCY SAFE BEAUTY PRODUCTS Whenever you find out you’re pregnant, you must become the ultimate label reader – for everything, not just food. free. Why? Because typically the chemicals used to make those glorious smells are the bad chemicals that you don’t want seeping into your pores. All Natural: I think of “all natural” products as one step down from organic. At the bare minimum, you want to make sure that the pregnancy safe beauty products you’re choosing are labeled with all natural ingredients. This means that nothing in that specific product have been chemically produced – which is always a win in my book Organic: I know that organic products can be a little bit on the pricier side, but they are completely worth it! Organic means that no harmful chemicals were used to make whatever pregnancy safe makeup brands you’re choosing and I say go for it. INGREDIENTS TO AVOID WHEN CHOOSING PREGNANCY SAFE MAKEUP. Sadly, the list for ingredients to avoid
when choosing pregnancy safe makeup is way longer. I don’t know what it is about chemicals whenever it comes to making beauty products in general, but it could do all us some good to avoid these nasty chemicals year round. I don’t want you to go crazy, stressing yourself out about it, these are the main chemicals to avoid so that you can choose pregnancy safe makeup that you know is safe. Beta hydroxy acids: these are typically found in products that exfoliate or peel your skin. Diethanolamine (DEA): this is a compound typically found in cosmetics to make them creamy Dihydroxyacetone (DHA): this one is found in all your favorite sunless tanning products. Formaldehyde: this colorless, strong-smelling gas that is typically found in household products is also found in things like soaps, shampoo, nail polish and more – and it’s definitely toxic and shouldn’t be anywhere near your growing belly April 2019

Hydroquinone: another gross chemical often found in creams and soaps. Parabens: these are the most widely used preservatives found in personal care products. They were first introduced in the 1950s and now we know that even thought they do stop things like fungus growth, they are known to cause cancer, so keep them away from yourself and your loved one. Phthalates: known to cause cancer and reproductive toxicity, you want to avoid these. Typically they are found in everyday products like nail polish, hair care and lotions. Thioglycolic acid: this one is found in a lot of hair coloring products. Toluene: this harmful chemical is typically found in nail polish, but was removed from most brands because of how harmful it was found to be. For your safety in pregnancy, watch out for these ingredients in any of your cosmetic products and stay away from it.

You can consult your dermatologist to suggest specific alternatives for each of them. Vitamin A: An oral intake of sufficient amount of vitamin A can work wonders for your skin. Creams and pills that contain retinoids, a synthetic form of vitamin A, help fight acne and psoriasis and treat skin disorders, premature aging, and warts. However, the use of retinoids during pregnancy can adversely affect fetal development. Vitamin K: Vitamin K, is one of the major ingredients in any skin lightening cream. It also aids the clotting of blood. During pregnancy, you are prone to developing clots. Hence, it is advisable to not let the vitamin K in cosmetic products penetrate the skin and reach the bloodstream and cause fetal complications. Centella Asiatica: It is an effective treatment for stretch marks. However, Centella Asiatica increases sensitivity to the sun rays and can cause a rash in
pregnant women. Its oral intake has a narcotic-like effect and can even result in miscarriage. A WORD OF CAUTION: If you love to look glamorous during pregnancy by using cosmetics, please remember the following points: • Protect your growing fetus by limiting your exposure to chemicals like lead and mercury, especially in the first trimester. • Nail polish, hair dyes, artificial nails and hair permanents all contain harmful chemicals. Though there are no conclusive evidences on the ill effects of these chemicals on the fetus, it is wise to either completely avoid the use of chemicals during pregnancy or use it in well-ventilated rooms. A proactive skin care regime is all that you need to keep your skin youthful and glowing, not just during pregnancy but throughout life. But for that, you need not always embrace chemicals. Benefits of Swimming: 10 Reasons Every Woman Should Get in the Water
S
wimming can make over your muscles, transform you into a cardio goddess, and turn back the aging clock. Need more reason to suit up? We’ve got ‘em right here. Dive in. BENEFITS OF SWIMMING: IT COUNTS AS BOTH CARDIO AND STRENGTH TRAINING.In swimming, if you aren’t moving constantly, you’re sinking. (Forced cardio!) Plus, water is about 800 times denser than air, so your muscles are under constant resistance. Finally, no more trying to decide if today is going to be a strength or cardio day.
Edgars Club @ 5 years
Swimming engages almost every major muscle group, requiring a person to use their arms, legs, torso, and stomach. Swimming also: • increases the heart rate without putting stress on the body • improves strength • tones muscles • enhances fitness • helps to manage weight Cardiovascular exercise, often referred to as cardio, involves the heart, lungs, and circulatory system. A thorough workout routine, such as one that feaApril 2019
club

tures swimming, will include this type of exercise. Research suggests that swimmers have half the mortality rate of inactive people. A study from 2016 indicates that swimming can help to lower blood pressure and control blood sugar levels.
68
IT’S EASY ON THE IMPACT. Yes, the low impact means swimming is a great workout for injured athletes, who need to take it easy on their joints. But it may also mean more results: You can swim at higher intensities on a regular basis without feeling wear and tear on your body. You could have a super-hard workout one day and still be in the pool the next, he says. Bonus: Research in the International Journal of Sports Medicine shows swimming is better than straight-up rest for exercise recovery, for when you want to take it easy. IT’S GREAT FOR YOUR LUNGS. When your face is under water, oxygen is at a premium. In turn, your body adapts to use oxygen more efficiently, Walton says. Plus, it learns to take in more fresh air with every breath, and expel more carbon dioxide with every exhalation. A study in the Indian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology even found that swimmers had better tidal volume (the amount of air that moves in and out of the lungs during relaxed breathing) compared to runners. This results in lower resting heart rates, lower blood pressure, and, as you’ll see next, better running performance. club
April 2019
IT MAKES YOU A BETTER RUNNER. By increasing your ability to take in and effectively use oxygen, swimming increases your endurance capacity like crazy, Walton says. That’s great news if you’re hoping to complete your first half-marathon this year. It also means you can run faster mile after mile without getting winded. In a 2013 Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports study, swimmers who followed a controlled breathing technique (taking two breaths per pool length) improved their running economy by 6 percent after just 12 swim sessions. Air-fueled benefits aside, swimming trains your glutes and hamstrings, your core, and your shoulders—all of which are needed for improved running form and performances. ANYONE CAN DO IT. Whether you’re recovering from an injury, pregnant, a new mom, or an Ironman competitor, swimming can give you a great workout (um, as long as you—you know—know how to swim). You control the pace, intensity, and what you get out of every session, he says. IT SLASHES MAJOR STRESS. While exercise-induced endorphins will do wonders for your stress levels, getting in the water for your workout may have its own special brand of mood-boosting benefits, Walton says. Being submerged in water dulls the amount of sensory information that bombards your body, helping to bring on feelings of calm, according to a study published in Pain Research & Management. Researchers Edgars Club @ 5 years
found that regular flotation tank sessions were effective at relieving symptoms in patients suffering from conditions related to chronic stress. No wonder you love soaking in the bathtub. IT TURNS BACK THE CLOCK. Regular swimmers are biologically 20 years younger than their driver’s licenses say they are, according to research from Indiana University. Scientists say that, even up until your 70th birthday, swimming affects blood pressure, cholesterol levels, cardiovascular performance, central nervous system health, cognitive functioning, muscle mass, and blood chemistry to be much more similar to that of your younger self. Who needs night cream? IT HITS OTHERWISE UNDERWORKED MUSCLES.“You don’t sit at your desk with your arms over your head,” Walton says. But when you’re in the pool, your arms are all over the place, meaning you need to work your often-neglected lats, deltoids, and traps, he says. And we know you aren’t targeting those when you’re on a bike or pounding the pavement. Plus, since so much of swimming is about staying balanced and level in the water (while both your arms and legs are moving, mind you), swimming helps you

develop the deep stabilizing muscles in your core and lower back that women often miss.
IT MAKES YOU SMARTER. Blood flow to the brain increased by up to 14 percent when men submerged themselves in water up to their hearts, according to a Journal of Physiology study. Researchers believe water’s pressure on the chest cavity may have something to do with it, and they are now studying whether water-based workouts improve blood flow to the brain better than do land-based ones. Stay tuned. SAFE DURING PREGNANCY. Swimming is a recommended form of exercise for pregnant people. Added weight can cause joint and muscle pain during pregnancy. Swimming is especially popular with pregnant people because the water can support this weight. This helps to feel more comfortable while staying fit. It is always a good idea to consult a doctor when undertaking a new form of activity during pregnancy.

DETOX AND MINERAL BODY WRAPS Detox wraps use a variety of products such as algae, seaweed, mud, clay, or gel to help rid the body of toxins. When the product is applied to the body, it’s called a body mask. After the product is applied, you are wrapped in plastic and covered with a blanket for about 20 minutes. These products work by stimulating your circulation, drawing out impurities, and giving your body minerals it might be missing. Afterward, the
body mask is washed off and the esthetician will apply lotion (though not through a massage). Save the full body wrap for when you are really making changes in your diet and trying to reduce your toxic load. These clays, muds, and seaweeds may be natural, but they are effective—and expensive. Don’t have a detox wrap and then go indulge in a T-bone steak and drink four martinis. It will make you feel worse rather than better, and you will have wasted your money.
SKIN MOLE Moles are growths on the skin that are usually brown or black. Moles can appear anywhere on the skin, alone or in groups. Most moles appear in early childhood and during the first 25 years of a person’s life. It is normal to have between 10-40 moles by adulthood. As the years pass, moles usually change slowly, becoming raised and/or changing color. Sometimes, hairs develop in the mole. Some moles may not change at all, while others may slowly disappear over time.
HEEL CUSHIONING FOR RUNNERS Midsole material designed to minimize the impact shock of a heel strike. Besides using a variety of cushioning material, some shoes feature a softer “crash pad” area on the outer edge of the foot or a rounded outer heel to smooth the landing. Research has shown that the body provides the majority of cushioning for your joints and that you land harder in a more cushioned shoe, so heel cushioning is largely a matter of perceived comfort. Uganda is one of the most beautiful countries in Africa. With its dense misty forests, snow-peaked mountains, glassy lakes and sprawling savannas, it’s no wonder Winston Churchill dubbed this wonderful country the ‘pearl of Africa’.

Some handy tips to consider when renovating your space.
How to make SPACES FEEL BIGGER
W
e talked to interior designer Kundai Hadasana about how to maximize a minimal space, and the importance of uniting function with style. Read below for Kundai’s take on how to live large with small square footage.
1
. ON THE TOP MISTAKES PEOPLE MAKE. “People are often tempted to break up a room with color-blocking or by sectioning off spaces in an attempt to make it feel larger,” says Interior designer, Kundai . Instead of dividing a room into sections, he recommends sticking to one cohesive design style and carrying it throughout the entire home. If your room is small, Edgars Club @ 5 years
long, and narrow, for instance, incorporate complementary colors, textures, and patterns across the entire space to create a sense of harmony. Kundai also recommends opting for light, clean-lined furniture as opposed to clunkier, more cozy alternatives. “People think that big, cushy furniture can make a small room more comfortable, but in reality, it weighs down the space and takes up an unnecessary amount of room.”
2
. ON USING COLORS AND MATERIALS WISELY. “When you’re working with a small space, a neutral palette is ideal,” Kundai says. April 2019

Go for subdued, natural colors, and stick with them throughout the space. From there, focus on textures and patterns that fall within the same color scheme. “Not too flat, not too busy,” he advises. In a bedroom, for instance, opting for white cotton sheets, a white linen duvet, and a neutral quilted throw can achieve a layered look without relying on bold pops of color, which can feel cluttered.

At the foot of the bed, consider storage cubes that can double as seating, and always opt for nightstands with multiple drawers. “It’s all about the ON HOW TO ADAPT WITHOUT little things,” he says. If you feel lost or unfulfilled, these exercises could help you work out what you should be doing with your life.
F

what happens if you don’t know what your passion is? This isn’t just an issue for those beginning their careers, it can be a problem for those stuck in jobs that they don’t enjoy. It’s all too easy to fall into a routine that leaves you bored or unfulfilled: you want to make the switch but you’re not sure what to.
passion in life.
1
. Ask yourself these three simple questions. Finding your passion could be easier than you think. By answering these questions honestly, you could work out what to do with the rest of your life. “What subject could I read 500 books about without getting bored?” These eight exercises could “What could I do for five years straight without help you find your true Edgars Club @ 5 years
getting paid?” “What would I spend my time doing if I had complete financial abundance to do anything?”
2
. Don’t presume that your passion should be your job Hunter S. Thompson, the gonzo journalist and novelist, once said: “Anything that gets your blood racing is probably worth doing.” There are a lot of things worth doing that will never bring you money. “You don’t have to be great at something to be passionate about it. “If you can’t imagine not doing something, it’s a passion. It doesn’t have to be a moneymaker. Make your money some way that will give you the time for what you really love to do.”
3
. Work out what you hate doing List the jobs or tasks that you absolutely loathe. Once you have eliminated these options, your true passion may become more clear. Quora poster Joshua also recommends creating a list of the Edgars Club @ 5 years
people you are jealous of to get more clarity on the issue. “Ask this question: who do I envy the most due to the work they do?” he says. “List multiple individuals, then look at the work they do, and try those things. You might find your passion from that list.” Why being lazy and procrastinating could make you wildly successful How to turn $1 into $100 in one day How to ask for help and get it

4
. Find the things you are mediocre at. Even if they don’t possess exceptional skills at any one thing, most people have lots of specialisms that they are “okay” at. According to Oliver Emberton, founder of software start-up Silktide, if you fuse your mediocre skills together, you’ll find your passion.“Say you’re an average artist, with a decent sense of humour,” he explains. “You won’t have much hope with an art degree, and you can’t study ‘humour’ as a
inspirational subject. But you could be an awesome cartoonist. “Or take an average business student, with some programming ability, and decent sales skills. That person is surprisingly well suited to become the boss of others who were better than them in any one of those areas.” Emberton argues that the most successful people, the ones that are most passionate about their work, are almost never defined by a single skill. “They are a fusion of skills, often not even exceptional skills, but they’ve made their fusion exceptional,” he says. “Steve Jobs was not the world’s greatest engineer, salesperson, designer or businessman. But he was uniquely good enough at all of these things, and wove them together into something far greater.”
5
. Forget the ‘Eureka!’ moment. Inspiration may strike some people in an instant. Suddenly, they know what they should be doing with their lives. For others, it takes work. People April 2019

recommend spending 20 minutes each day thinking about the things that have interested you recently, or any opportunities that you have spotted.
92
“Your true passion is not found overnight, but is realised through series of discoveries of small interests,” he says. “I have always regarded thinking/ meditating as a process of reading/analyzing your mind, which in turn leads to discovering your true passion.” Try asking close friends and family what they think you should be doing with your life. But don’t put people on the spot, as they may rush their answers. If any of your nearest and dearest have hobbies or passions that interest you, ask to spend some time helping out, or giving them a try. Experiment with new activities, whether it’s a new sport, learning a language, or trying a craft, as much as possible.
6
. Remember what you loved doing as a child. club
April 2019
Did you love to draw or write stories when you were young? Try to remember the activities that you enjoyed during your childhood, before the pressure to study the right subjects or get a good job began to mount. What hobbies did you enjoy doing before life got in the way? Would you enjoy those activities now? Use these memories to help you find your true passion as an adult. Perhaps you still have hobbies now. Could you expand on them so they take more of a centre stage in your life? Or take a new perspective: imagine that you are very old. What do you wish you had spent the last 20 to 30 years doing? Think of it as a slightly less gloomy version of writing your own obituary.
7
. Create something brand new. According to Emberton, the secret to finding your passion is to create something new. He argues that people are instantly passionate about projects,
businesses or services that they start from scratch. “When you create something new, you’re inventing something to be passionate about,” he explains. “Whether you design novelty cushions, or write Batman stories, or start a Twitter account dedicated to fact-checking politicians.” However, success is key to finding one’s true passion, he warns. “If your new Twitter account only has five followers after a year, you probably won’t be too passionate about it,” he says. “If you had 5m, you’d have quit your job. You must find success to fuel your passion.”
8
. Try visualisation. Imagine yourself getting up early, jumping out of bed, excited about going to work. You get dressed quickly, full of enthusiasm about your day. The sun is shining and you take those first steps out of your bedroom. Now work out where you are going and what kind of job follows on from that feeling of anticipation. Edgars Club @ 5 years

orld War I is also known as the First World War, the Great War and the War To End All Wars. It was a global military war which took place primarily in Europe from 1914 to 1918. Over 40 million casualties resulted, including approximately 20 million military and civilian deaths. The immediate cause of the war was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand (June 28, 1914), heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, by Serbian nationals. The retaliation by Austria-Hungary against Serbia activated a series of alliances that set off a chain reaction of war declarations. Within a month, much of Europe was in a state of open

Germany had a strategy to invade France, known as the Schlieffen Plan. This plan had been in place since 1897. The Germans thought that Russia would be the real danger and that they could easily defeat France within weeks. This plan had a number of flaws: • Germany needed to go through Belgium, a neutral country, to get to France. Britain warned Germany not to do this. Germany carried on with the Schlieffen Plan. The small Belgian army fought
bravely and slowed down the German advance. • A Britain has signed the Treaty of London in 1839 promising to protect Belgium. As a result Britain sent the British Expeditionary Force to Belgium slowing the Germans down at the Battle of Mons. • On the 19th August Russia invaded Germany much quicker than the Germans had expected. This forced Germany to move 100,000 troops back to support which weakened the German advance. • The Battle of Marne (Germans advance on Paris) saw the British and French armies push the Germans back to the river Aisne where they began to dig trenches. • Cases of World April 2019

• France and Belgium severely damaged – production much reduced • Total cost of war £45,000 million without inclusion of ‘opportunity costs’
Dislocation
• Disruption of international trade • Great Britain affected more than anyone by growth of competition; from USA and Japan especially • Loss of trade to substitution of home-produced goods
