”Mother is the heartbeat in the home; and without her, there seems to be no heart throb. When you are looking at your mother, you are looking at the purest love you will ever know. Mothers are like glue. Even when you can’t see them, they’re still holding the family together.” Unknown The bond that a child develops with his mother can never be severed. You grew as an organism inside her for nine months. She carried you and sustained you, sharing her sustenance with you through your umbilical cord. When you are born the cord is severed. It is never severed in her heart. That bond lasts forever. As we grow up we become our own people and may come to forget that woman who nurtured and loved us. But remember this, she will never forget you and never stop loving you. Being a Mom is a feeling I can never explain. It is the core of my existence and so as much as I appreciate being celebrated today I celebrate all my children and the blessing that they have bestowed upon me of being called ‘Mama”

he emotional toll of having to wear the same set of undergarments for days, weeks, months end or non at all can be debilitating especially if you are a woman behind bars. In light of this Edgars donated 340 sets of under garments to Chikurubi female inmates with each inmate receiving 2 sets - worth RTGS$18,300.
The handover took place on Wednesday the 20th of March at Chikurubi maximum prison. A mini handover ceremony was organized by the River of Life church who were also handing over a toiletries donation to the prison choir. ticipate in environmental and wildlife initiatives as well as various humanitarian needs such as the recent Cyclone Idai. Hence this is an extension of community engagement projects Edgars is already involved in. We were aligning the theme for 2019 - Think equal, build smart, innovate for change – every woman deserves an equal opportunity to experience the fullness of life. It’s easy to take for granted seemingly small aspects of life such as having clean undergarments to wear every day. But for many people lacking basic life necessities, something so small really can make all the difference. New underwear is one of the basic necessities for women, but one of the least donated. The decision to
donate undergarments to the female inmates was brought about as we had realized there was a need and we stepped in to fillHarare the gap. 13 While all efforts by various organisations and individuals, have been mostly on the provisioning of food, let’s not forget there are many women who are also caught in a cycle of incarceration who have various sanitary and toiletry needs. The General sentiment from the inmates was that of happiness. The donation was received on behalf of the inmates by the Prison Superintendent who expressed gratitude for the donation. Bras are quite restricting especially if the right one or smaller size is worn, hence they would result in reduced circulation to the breast area. They also constrict movements of the diaphragm during sleeping and thus impede breathing. Bra wires also dig into skin and cause irritations, indentations and cysts.

Furthermore, cotton also enables your skin to breathe and is less likely to cause rashes or irritations, particularly if your cotton pyjamas are loose-fitting.

KEEP YOUR EYES AND NOSE COVERED: Research has shown that sleeping in a sleep mask can lead to the production of higher levels of melatonin, less sleep disturbances, and more time spent in a deep sleep. So while you may find it strange to keep your eyes covered, eliminate those night time annoyances that are making it difficult for you to get the sleep you need.

Graduation Attire You studied hard for that diploma, but let’s be honest – your cap and gown aren’t exactly the most ‘grammable things in your closet. Your graduation day will be perfect once you know what to wear. Don’t worry we are here to guide you.
club
May 2019
M
any people won’t know what to wear for this special occasion, because it’s not every day that you graduate. And you want it to be special and perfect. Some people might go all out with a dress that looks like it should be worn to prom, and others might skimp out by just wearing jeans and a casual t-shirt. But these are all wrong! Here is how to dress for a
graduation ceremony when you’re the one graduating: Don’t wear long floor-length ‘prom’ dresses under your gown Your graduation gown will most likely not be touching the floor, so make sure your dress doesn’t touch the floor as well. You will be doing a lot of walking in the graduation venue and also across the stage. If you wear a long dress, you Edgars Club @ 5 years
look smart beauty might trip on it or have a hard time keeping it up since you will have to grab your diploma with one hand and shake hands with the administrators with your other hand – leaving you to drag your dress across the floor and maybe even down some steps. So make sure you don’t wear a floor-length dress! Consider your school dress code… if you want. Some schools might still enforce a dress code during graduation ceremonies. If so, follow it so you won’t get in trouble. However, considering that you’ll have your gown on top of your dress the whole time, you won’t have to worry about wearing something backless or a dress with no sleeves. The only time you’ll be taking off your gown is after the ceremony. Which brings us to the next point: Dress comfortably. You will be at the graduation ceremony for about three and a half hours. The event will be a combination of Edgars Club @ 5 years
standing and sitting, so make sure you’re dressed comfortably enough for both. If you’re wearing pants, consider dark pants and shoes. If you’re planning to wear heels, consult the “don’t wear new shoes” section, and consider a low heel. Keep in mind that if you wear a coat or jacket, it will have to go with you into the ceremony. (Consider light layers instead.) Whatever you choose to wear, these photos will be around for a while, so pick something you won’t mind seeing a few years down the road. When in doubt, you can’t go wrong with white and gold. WEAR A DRESS WITH POCKETS! During the ceremony, you won’t be able to bring a purse or wallet with you, but you will need to bring your phone with you to text or call your family/friends after the ceremony! It will be hectic after the ceremony, and you will need to find your family/friends. For this reason, try finding a dress with pockets so you can
put your phone in it for after the ceremony. DRESS APPROPRIATELY FOR THE WEATHER. If it’s winter, wear something warmer – a thicker dress with sleeves. If it’s summer or spring, wear something cooler – backless or sleeveless dress. CONSIDER WEARING ACCESSORIES TO ADD FLAIR. A necklace, bracelet, or earrings. During the ceremony, people will only be seeing your gown, so consider wearing something on the outside that people will be able to see. WEAR FORMAL SHOES YOU’RE COMFORTABLE with Since you will be walking across the stage and most likely in a big venue, you’ll need to wear shoes you’re comfortable with and also shoes that match your outfit. If you’re comfortable with heels, go ahead and wear them. If May 2019

look smart beauty not, flats will also suffice. But make sure they’re formal, and not sneakers or gym shoes or anything. DON’T WEAR NEW SHOES. Commencement is not the day to break in new shoes. Another tip: Don’t wear high heels if you are not used to walking in them. On your walk across the stage you should be focusing on shaking hands with the president or principle, not worrying about tripping.
58
DON’T SPEND TOO MUCH TIME STYLING YOUR HAIR. Keep in mind you’ll be wearing a graduation cap for a few hours. If you’re planning an elaborate hairstyle, try it out with your cap before graduation day to make sure that the cap still sits properly. Unless if your school doesn’t require wearing caps then style your hair whichever way you want.

HAT PARENTS SHOULD WEAR TO THE GRADUATION club
May 2019
CEREMONY
As a parent, figuring out what to wear shouldn’t be too stressful. Remember, this day is about celebrating your graduate’s achievement and another step into fulltime adulthood. Of course, you too want to look good since you’ll definitely be featured in at least a few pictures. Leave your jeans at home. Having your child graduate is a big accomplishment and merits more respect than just wearing a pair of jeans or capris. Whether you’re attending a formal college graduation or a more informal high school graduation, a pretty dress (or a skirt and top) that is classic with a modern twist is perfect for the occasion. Think conservative and ladylike The day belongs to your child and his/her achievements. Don’t embarrass your son or daughter by wearing something revealing that draws unwanted attention.
For example, don’t wear sexy, tight or low-cut tops. Avoid dresses with very short hemlines. Don’t even go near anything with sequins, sparkles or fringe. A graduation is not a cocktail party. It’s best to err on the side of conservative. Give thought to color and prints Photos are a big part of Graduation Day so if you want to wear some color, go right ahead. Solid colored dresses are slimming and photograph well. In spring, a cheery shade is fine, but neon brights (which are in style this year) will eventually date, and distract from the real star-your child. Prints are lovely too, so long as they aren’t overpowering. Steer clear of edgy animal prints, small busy patterns, or anything loud and tacky. Florals are a natural choice for mother of the graduate dresses, and always work well any time of year. Or, you can go for a modern, relaxed print. Elegance is the magic word when it comes to dressing for a graduation. Edgars Club @ 5 years

FIT ESSENTIALS Sets Goals That Are Actually Achievable
F
itness goals are important on several counts. They hold us accountable, expand our definition of possible, and encourage us to push through temporary discomfort for longer-lasting change. But figuring out how to set fitness goals you’ll actually want to attain can be part art, part science. A good fitness goal can be can help you get back on track when you have bad days. In other words, a goal, if thoughtful and well structured, can give you the extra incentive to keep going when motivation wanes, or when life otherwise
Edgars Club @ 5 years
gets in the way. The problem is that during this time of year, it’s easy to get caught up in the rush of New Year’s resolutions and set goals that are too lofty, unsustainable, and otherwise unrealistic. We then fail to achieve them and feel worse about ourselves than before we started. This year, to avoid that detrimental downward spiral altogether, we share tips for doing fitness goal setting right.
1
. FOCUS ON ONE GOAL AT A TIME When it comes to setting May 2019
club
59
shop smart fitness
a fitness goal, one of the biggest mistakes is that people try to do too much at one time. Perhaps you want to hit the gym every day, cut out added sugar, and get at least eight hours of sleepa night. Trying to tackle that much at once is essentially just setting yourself up for failure. With so many things to achieve, people get anxious, and if they didn’t do one thing, they feel like a failure. This can lead to negative self-talk that lowers your chances of achieving any of the goals. Instead, pick one thing you want to crush—like, doing a pull-up, or completing your first-ever 5K—and channel your efforts into achieving that before exploring another goal.
60
2
. MAKE IT YOUR OWN. It can be easy to scroll through social media and feel inspired-yet-envious by images of the super fit. Yet basing your own goals off of what you see others achieving is neither productive nor practical. We are bombarded by images of what fitness should look like and how we should do XYZ, it can be hard to identify what’s good for you. Certain things that top athletes can do—run a marathon, do 100 push-ups, master the most challenging yoga poses may be great for them, but it’s not metric that everyone should be measured by. In other words, your goal should be your goal—something that you personally are excited about and realistically able to achieve—not someone else’s. club
May 2019
3
. MAKE IT MEASURABLE, SPECIFIC, AND TIMEBOUND. Having a measurable goal allows your to track your progress and the more specific your goal, the clearer the path to achieving it becomes. Wanting to “be stronger,” for example, is a great place to start, but what does that mean to you? Saying you want to increase the number of push-ups you can do makes the goal measurable, and saying you want to be able to do 20 push-ups in one minute makes it specific. On top of that, the goal should be time-bound, as this helps you focus your efforts, develop a more structured plan for actually achieving the goal, and creates a sense of urgency that can be motivating. Examples of measurable, specific, and time-bound goals include being able to deadlift 10 repetitions with 50 pounds in three months, running a 5K nonstop by the end of the year, and correctly performing a pull-up by the start of summer. A great way to remember this is through the SMART method, which helps you make sure your goal is specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timely.
4
. SET THE BAR LOW—AT LEAST, at first. Speaking of attainable your goal should seem relatively easy or within reach of what you are doing. Why? If you think it’s easy, you have likely already worked through any mental obstacles that could thwart your progress. On the confidence scale, you should be at a 9 out of 10 when it comes Edgars Club @ 5 years
to your belief that you’ll actually achieve your goal. The less confident you are, the less likely you will adhere to the steps needed to make it happen. Plus, attainable goals help ensure that you start out with some all-important wins. The more success you have in your fitness journey, the more you will stay with it. Having this success early on is especially important as it builds confidence that can snowball into long-term results.
5
. PLAY THE LONG GAME. We all want instant gratification, but it’s important to be realistic with the time frame you develop for achieving your goal. Lasting changes take a while. Know that you are never going to make an overhaul in one week. Instead, pick a goal that can be achieved over the course of several months or even a year. A longterm mentality will help you see your goal as a lifestyle change, rather than quick fix, and you’ll be much more likely to adhere to it.
6
. UNDERSTAND WHAT’S DRIVING YOUR GOAL. Sometimes fitness goals are driven by underlying fears, insecurities, or body image issues—like wanting to run a marathon because you were bullied in middle school gym class — it’s important to address these issues rather than assuming achieving your goal will assuage them. Depending on what you are trying to accomplish, it can stir up a lot of emotions. If thinking about your goal brings anxiety and/or triggers past mental struggles, Edgars Club @ 5 years
shop smart fitness
consider talking with a mental health professional.
7
. BE FLEXIBLE IN YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS. Though it is important to make your goal specific, it’s also important to give yourself permission to alter it as you progress with your fitness journey. Perhaps a goal that seemed appropriately challenging at first is actually way too tough to maintain, or vice versa. If your definition of success is rigid, it will be hard to maintain that. Set goals you think you can achieve and then modify them as you understand more what you are capable of. There’s nothing wrong with moving the goal posts as you get more comfortable with your body’s abilities.
8
. DEVELOP MICRO GOALS ON THE WAY TO YOUR BIG GOAL. Within your larger goal you should schedule in smaller, confidence-building goals that are achievable in a shorter time period. For example, say you want to run a nine-minute mile. During your training, you should make a smaller goal, like running a half mile in five minutes, to both show yourself how much you’ve accomplished and assess where you currently are. It’s all about those little victories. You want to be able to reward yourself mentally. Having to wait too long to feel like you’ve accomplished anything can diminish your motivation and pull you off track entirely. In general, it’s good to set micro goals that can be achieved every two to three weeks. May 2019

auritius evokes most of those clichés “Mauritians are nice.”, “The beautiful beaches.”, “The yellow sand.” These are true and everyone knows it. Indeed, this wonder of the Indian Ocean has some attributes that you will not find anywhere else in the world! On Mauritius, hospitality is legendary. Enjoy! To Practice Diving in Mauritius In Mauritius it’s what you want, when you want. In other words, you can enjoy many activities (kayak, snorkeling, golf, bike, boat trips, catamaran sailing, hiking, …) or do nothing at all! For diving lovers, you need to experience the charms of diving in Mauritius: warm waters, dives for all levels and skills – training for beginners. On the other hand you will rarely find an island in the world that will offer as much diversity in its dive sites: its coral reefs are protected by various associations and closely monitored by the Mauritian Federation of diving. But for those not yet familiar with diving in Edgars Club @ 5 years
Mauritius, be aware that depending on the location of your dive center (East, West, North or South) there are many centers that offer you different spots in terms of wildlife, flora, ship wrecks, but also diving conditions or experience of the diver. Tour the beaches on Mauritius The majority of guests returning from their holidays in Mauritius will tell you: the beaches are beautiful, long, with fine sand, for relaxation, tanning, ideal for doing nothing at all- just lazing around! If you are planning on family holidays, you will be able to play with your children, with confidence. If you are more into solo traveling, you will finally be able to read the last novel of the year (choose well … it must be thick!). One advice is to let go of your smartphones: there is so much to see on a beach. The Mauritian families picnic on Sundays is one of the many examples. Others can be Indian ceremonies with women who file the sur-

face of the lagoon with a few offerings of flowers or the beach fires lit by some hotels to provide guests with a dance show at nightfall. The beaches go all around the island, you have a vast choice. Our favorite? … That of Mont Choisy, in the northwest. But if you want to enjoy the sunset then Flic-EnFlac or Le Morne remains the best spots. And if you are more into tranquility, the beautiful beach of Belle Mare in the east, will not deceive. Visit Blue-Bay if you want to snorkel in its Marine park and if you are into island hopping, do visit Ile Aux Cerf in the east where the beach is exquisite! Mingle with the population of Mauritius Before leaving the island boasting a mixed population, check the calendar, you can probably have the chance to witness a national or cultural celebrations. Indian festivals are particularly rich in colors, scents and flavors. Special appeal to amateur photographers … But if you really want it, it May 2019

is very easy to get in touch with Mauritians, since they are of talkative nature. The easiest course is to befriend Mauritians, they will suggest you excursions places, recommend you the “real” restaurants – cheap and tasty. Who knows, maybe they will invite you to their table or their Sunday picnic. 78 78
Taste the cuisine of Mauritius All those different cultures gave Mauritius some of the island’s most delicious specialties of the Indian Ocean and you will easily find them on small tables and great restaurants. I highly recommend the palm salad (a club

fish curry, chicken curry, zourite stew or Indian Veg cuisine.

On the beaches or around, you will surely come across fried noddles(Chinese noodles) or boulettes- Chinese dumplings. Not to mention the small pineapple cut up and sold individually (your children will surely appreciate). Make a cure of tropical fruits, depending on the season. Nevertheless … the abundance of hotels in Mauritius also offers you the opportunity to test some excellent restaurants run by famous chefs. Well, we hope we have convinced you to spend your next holidays in Mauritius! Have fun!

Cup of herbal tea or glass of water
Make comfort your priority. Too many fussy details like beading and sequins, or stiff and scratchy bedding materials, make for a less than restful night’s sleep. When choosing bedding, make sure whatever you choose is delightfully touchable — think crisp cotton sheets and a cozy cashmere throw. •Linen is cool in summer and can last forever if well cared for. It can feel nubby (even a bit rough) or smooth and quite soft, so try to feel your sheets in person before you buy. •Cotton percale is what you want if you love the feel of “crisp” sheets. This classic fabric is smooth but firm and performs well in warm weather. Edgars Club @ 5 years

• Cotton sateen is very soft and smooth, almost silky in feel. It may not be the best choice in hot weather. Try one of these soothing bedtime rituals: Brew a cup of herbal tea (try chamomile with honey) Read something soothing or uplifting, like a few beautiful poems or an inspirational book Gradually lower the lights over the last hour before bedtime, ending with just a candle, and then blow it out Take a bath with relaxing lavender or rose oil Spritz lavender-scented linen spray on your sheets and pillow Listen to the same relaxing playlist each night before drifting off

feels plush underfoot, making it especially appealing to step out on first thing in the morning, and it can help muffle sounds for a more restful mood. However, if you have a dust allergy, carpeting is notoriously difficult to keep dust-free, so it’s best to skip it. If you love the feel of carpet but need to be able to thoroughly clean the floors often, compromise with a washable area rug atop hard flooring.
Rethink the TV. Screens emit a blue
light than can make it more difficult to fall asleep. Keep the TV (and other devices) out of the bedroom, and commit to reading a real book (on actual paper, not an e-reader!) before bed.

we can all benefit from sleeping in a cleaner, healthier bedroom. Here are a few ways to keep the air in your bedroom fresh and pure all year long: . Use an air purifier with a filter to remove dust, pollen and air pollutants. . Keep a houseplant or two in the bedroom (rubber plants are especially good at cleaning the air) . Make the bedroom a no-shoes zone.

. Vacuum and dust weekly (including under the bed), more often if you have allergies. . Open the windows to air out the space for at least 30 minutes each morning . Choose natural fibers and materials that don’t contain harmful VOCs.
Opt for Warm, Dimmable Lights
Lighting is one of the most important aspects in your bedtime routine. Since your brain reads the light to decide what time it is — and therefore what mode to go into — the right lighting will go a long way toward getting you ready for deep, revitalizing sleep. Bright white- and blue-tinted lights tell your brain it’s daytime, and is therefore time to work. Low, warm lights, on the other hand, send signals that it’s time to get ready to hit the hay. Replace the stark bright bulbs with warm, preferably dimmable lights (a dimming switch is simple to install), or you can forego the main lights altogether a couple hours before bed and use lamps to light your evening routine. any students get confused between these two areas because they both seem to be about sticking things together. Essentially, bonding involves one of three kinds: covalent bonding, ionic bonding or metallic bonding.
weak forces. Simply heating a substance will cause these intermolecular forces to be overcome. Examples of the intermolecular forces include “permanent dipole-dipole attractions, “temporary dipole-dipole attractions”, “dispersion forces”, “Van der Waals forces” etc.
In all of these, the atoms are joining together to form a group which is permanent until a chemical reaction takes place. A relatively large amount of energy is required to break a chemical bond. Similarly, a relatively large amount of energy is released when a chemical bond is created.
Hydrogen bonding is a particularly strong form of intermolecular force. It is often around 10% of the strength of a covalent bond.
Intermolecular forces hold molecules to other molecules. They are relatively club
May 2019
Intermolecular Forces The easiest kind to understand are permanent dipole-permanent dipole interactions. These occur between polar molecules. A molecule is polar when there is an uneven distribution of electron density. This occurs in a
bond when the atoms at each end have a different pull on the electron pair. The “amount of pull” is known as electronegativity. Fluorine is the most electronegative element (electronegativity value of 4) and the other elements have decreasing values as you go down the periodic table and as you go left. The negative end of one molecule is attracted to the positive end of another. Although pairs of molecules can form like in this illustration, chains can also be formed. The main point is that there is some attraction between the molecules and this makes them harder to separate and so have a higher boiling point than expected for non-polar molecules. They are called permaEdgars Club @ 5 years

Consider two non-polar molecules colliding with each other. Remember that electrons are not held in fixed places but are distributed in clouds. Think of the molecules as being a plate of jelly! As the molecules collide, their electron clouds are distorted and so, for a short time, the electrons are not evenly distributed around the molecules. The jellies have wobbled to one side. For that short time there is a temporary dipole within the molecules. For that instant, opposite charges will attract and similar charges will repel. The attractive bits get closer together (more attraction), the repulsive bits get further apart (less repulsion). Overall, there is a small amount of attraction. As the electron clouds recover from their collision, they will bounce Edgars Club @ 5 years
back to their original distribution but other collisions will repeat the process. If the molecule is small, with fairly tightly held electrons (eg H2) , the electron distortion (jelly wobble) is small and so the attraction between those molecules is small. If the molecule is larger (eg I2),
the electron distortion is larger. This explains why hydrogen is a gas even at very low temperatures yet iodine is a solid at room temperature. The molecule is said to possess a temporary dipole, because it is only present for an instant (but it is continually reformed). It is interesting to consider which is the most impor-
tant of these effects. Intuitively, most people would say that the permanent dipole dipole attraction is the most important. However, if you look at the boiling point of the hydrogen halides (HCl, HBr, HI) you will see that the boiling point increases as you get the bigger halogens (more temporary dipoles) even though the bond polarity is less (weaker permanent dipoles). This shows that the increase in the temporary dipole-dipole attraction is bigger than the decrease in the permanent dipole-dipole attraction. Hydrogen Bonding Hydrogen bonding is a special case of permanent dipole-permanent dipole bonding. It is important to be clear that although it is called “hydrogen-bonding it really is an intermolecular force. It is alsovital that you refer to the hydrogen bonding as being between molecules and not within them. May 2019

hat’s an Unhealthy Relationship? A relationship is unhealthy when it involves mean, disrespectful, controlling, or abusive behavior. Some people live in homes with parents who fight a lot or abuse each other — emotionally, verbally, or physically. someone who has lived around violent or disrespectful behavior may not have learned how to treat others with kindness and respect or how to expect the same treatment. Qualities like kindness and respect are absolute requirements for a healthy relationship. Someone who doesn’t yet have this part down may need to work on it with a trained therapist before he or she is ready for a relationship. Meanwhile, even though you might feel bad or feel for someone who’s been mistreated, you need to take care of yourself — it’s not healthy to stay in a relationship that involves abusive behavior of any kind.
