ad is the strongman of the family. He is the one who shows strength and wisdom. Children worship their fathers and most times want to be like him when they grow up. They lean on these gentle giants and seek them for encouragement. Dads allow the children to take risks when Mom says no, yet they are also the strong arm on which the whole family rests on. o all the fathers who are doing their best for their children, we thank you. We adore you and wish that we can make you proud everyday. To my own husband who I have seen being our strength during all the weathers and seasons of life, I want you to know that you are appreciated. Being a Dad is not the easiest of jobs but I hope we make it worthy and that it is a rewarding one.

For the remainder, suits are a necessary evil: an insurance policy for professional and social occasions that you want to spend the bare minimum on. Without a doubt the suit is the one item in a man’s wardrobe that reflects a man’s style. Every man should have at least one suit that is both classically stylish and fits him perfectly. Two things every woman notices: your shoes, and your smile. When it comes to the latter, there is no longer any excuse for ignoring advances in technology. Electric toothbrushes are designed to do most the work for you, plus, they’re better for your health: according to a study by Sheffield University, rotating brushes reduce 11% more plaque than manual toothbrushes, and can also significantly reduce gum problems. | Learn how to manscape properly

Trimming your pubic is not only perfectly acceptable in 2019, it’s polite. Top tip: keep whatever device you use for this sensitive task separate from what you shave your face with. There are plenty of electric razors on the market designed for the nether region’s unique challenges without having to fill your Mach 3 with short and curlies.

| ...Or learn how to shave like an expert

Use a microbeadfree scrub on a Monday morning to scrub the weekend off your face, and every other day of the week go for a plain face wash that’s less abrasive. You’ll be looking better than you feel in no time.

You might not have time in the morning for an extensive wet-shaving routine, but learning the basics of a good shave is important. Preparing your skin beforehand with a shave oil will help the razor glide over your hairs, while soaking the blades in warm water will help your pores expand, allowing the hair to come off your face with less redness and irritation. If it still feels like a chore, leave your precious face in the hands of the experts and get a professional shave once a week.

The 7 Secrets of Staying Fit After 40

T

his 41-year-old expert reveals strategies that even regular guys can use.I’m not an elite athlete. I’m just a guy on the precipice of middle age who enjoys running, biking, soccer, and tennis. If I can push myself to my physical limit a couple of times a week and still have the energy to crawl around with my daughter, then I’m satisfied.

That makes me a useful filter. The pros have unlimited budgets and few demands on their waking hours be-

soccer coach Raymond Verheijen and exercise scientist Trent Stellingwerff, Ph.D. For an elite athlete, periodizing can mean creating a structured program of buildup and tapering that yields peak fitness at a precise time. For me, it’s more about the principles: ramping up training gradually, preparing my body for specific demands, and avoiding fatigue. If you invite me to play soccer and I haven’t been keeping in soccer shape, or if I’m nursing an injury I could play through, I say no. Benching yourself sucks, but it doesn’t suck as much as missing an entire season because you got hurt.

54

EMPHASIZE RECOVERY Elite lifters end their workouts differently than the rest of us do. Strength coaches talk about loading and unloading--that is, the former should always be followed by the latter. I now think in those terms. “Unloading” for nonlifters can mean yoga, foam-rolling, ice tubbing, running in water, or meditating. It encompasses both recovery and range-of-motion work that prevents the sorts of movement limitations and compensations that can build up over time and lead to injuries. I used to consider happy hour a valid cooldown routine. Now I’m a fanatic about stretching and self-massage and have a closet full of straps, bands, foam rollers, and lacrosse balls to club

show for it. Committing to this is tough if your schedule is packed, which could tempt you to extend your workout and skip the stretching. That’s a bad tradeoff. GO HARD (AND EASY) A percentage of your workouts should be high intensity, and the balance — say, 80 percent — should be performed at very low intensity. Again, I don’t stick to any formal program of polarization, but I try to avoid what. The most common mistake athletes make: going too hard on easy days and then not being able to go as hard as you want the next time out. Instead, I make my hard workouts both shorter and more intense than I used to. Elite older athletes stay competitive by being more deliberate in their training, focusing their limited time honing specific skills, and correcting their fitness weaknesses. For me, this often means taking two minutes before I start to write up a plan on a sticky note. A little intentionality goes a long way. EAT FOR MUSCLE Much of the nutrition “science” peddled to athletes is bunk. If you’re eating a healthy diet--lots of different fruits and vegetables, proteins, and whole grains, not too much sugar or processed stuff--you’re probably fine. But if you want to avoid losing muscle

1 tspn Worcestershire sauce 1/2 tspn onion powder 1/2 tspn smoked paprika 1/4 tspn freshly ground black pepper FOR THE RUB: 1/2 tablespoons sea salt 1 tablespoon ground mustard 1 tablespoon garlic powder 2 teaspoons chipotle chili powder INSTRUCTIONS

Preheat the oven to 3000C Make the barbecue sauce: combine the ketchup, honey, garlic, apple cider vinegar, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, the onion powder, smoked paprika, black pepper and Coca-Cola in a saucepan. Whisk together until combined. Heat over medium heat, bringing the mixture to a boil then reducing to a simmer over low heat. Cook for until thickened, about 30 minutes stirring occasionally. Remove from the heat and cool to room temperature. Store in a jar or sealed container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. While the sauce is simmering, place each rack of ribs on a doubled sheet of aluminum foil. In a bowl, whisk together onion powder, smoked paprika, pepper, salt, ground mustard, garlic powder, and chipotle chili powder. Rub the mixture all over both sides of the ribs. Wrap the ribs in the aluminum foil. Place the racks on a baking sheet and put them on the center rack in the oven. Bake for 2 1/2 to 3 hours. Grill the ribs: Heat the grill to the highest setting and remove the ribs from the foil. Gently pour the juice in the foil packets into a large bowl or measuring cup, and whisk in 1/4 of sauce. • Place the ribs on the grill and cook for 10 to 12 minutes, until they are charred and slightly crisp on the outsides, basting with the sauce on top. Some handy tips to consider when renovating your space.

How to compromise on

80 80

DECOR WITH YOUR PARTNER

I

t’s certainly tough enough to decorate a whole house with only one design style in mind, but to merge two different styles together into one unified look, whether it’s because you’re moving in together or one person’s moving in with the other? Well, that’s quite the challenge. The good news is that—with a little (okay, a lot!) of patience and compromise—you can create a home that is stylish and unified but that still reflects both of the individuals who live there. Stay Neutral on the Biggies Choose simple, neutral colors for large furniture items like your couch, chairs, dining room, and bedroom furniture. It’s club

June 2019

much easier to agree on classic shapes in neutral colors than to fight over a trendy object in a loud color. (And you have a better chance of getting a girly pillow on a black couch than a black pillow on a hot pink couch.) Hint: Leather upholstery usually gets a thumbs-up on the “guy meter,” so if he isn’t quite sold on a piece you like, see if it comes in leather. Make Your Wall Art Personal What you put on the walls can be a tricky decision if you both have really different tastes in art. You want to put up black and white paintings of Paris, and he wants a poster of dogs playing cards… Suggest using personal photos for wall decor instead. Make a gallery wall of

family photos or scenes from trips you’ve been on together, or print one giant photo of the two of you. Both ideas will solve the wall decor dilemma—and make your space feel more personal.

jump on board 100% with your vision right away, you’ll be able to have a much more productive conversation based on concrete images rather than ambiguous words.

Give Masculine Items a Feminine Touch Look for ways to take more handsome-looking objects and add a little girlish flair to meet in the middle. Spray a skull decoration gold or buy a cowhide rug that’s been dyed a fun color.

Offer to Help Him Display His Hobby My husband is a musician. While I love that he can play music at home, I wasn’t so into the state of the room and the amount of instruments that were quickly taking over the space. I offered to help him come up with a way to store and display all the gear in an organized (and much more aesthetically pleasing) manner. Now I love the space, and he was glad to have someone else do most of the work.

When You Just Can’t Agree, Do a DIY Project When we moved into our new house, we couldn’t settle on a table that we both liked, so eventually we just decided to build our own! This will be a fun activity for both of you to do, encourage him, we know some men need that extra nudge. If either of you are into building things (or would like to be), creating your own item that will meet both your specifications is a great way to solve a design impasse. Not the DIY type? You can totally contract the job out to a local artist. Communicate visually. Words like “mid-century modern” and “bright and airy bohemian” don’t mean a lot to people who aren’t into design. After questioning, one of the best things you can do to help convey your vision is to shut up. Literally. Find several pictures that can do the talking for you. Make intentional comments on aspects of those images that you like. Use these to communicate with your spouse instead of trying to word vomit him into being excited about your ideas. Even if he doesn’t Edgars Club @ 5 years

Know When to Let It Go This is a big one. Sometimes, you may have a design request that you really want, but you just can’t seem to get him to go for it. That needs to be okay, too. Todd is really great about letting me use more “girly” colors in our decor scheme, but when I said I wanted to paint the sliding door in our bedroom pink, he gave me a pretty solid “NO” response. Instead of arguing, I said a silent prayer of thanks for all the ideas he doesn’t fight me on and chose a grey and white striped pattern instead. Pick your battles, ladies. Be Smart About Compromises If there’s one item of his that you absolutely hate, try compromising by getting a better version of the item. Once you get to know what types of items are in your “couple safe zone,” you’ll start naturally gravitating towards those ideas. c June 2019

'O' level PHYSICS SOUND

Sound is a mechanical wave phenomenon and is normally associated with our sense of hearing. Sound is a property of vibrating objects. 82

Sound is produced by vibrating sources in a material medium. Medium can be any gas, liquid or solid. The vibrating sources set the particles of a medium in vibration in such a way that sound travels outwards in the form of longitudinal waves. Some of the energy of the vibrations are transmitted over a distance. Examples of vibrating sources: 1. Musical instruments, like drums, guitar 2. Hitting a piece of iron with a hammer 3. Loudspeakers (Consists club

of a cone which vibrates under the effects of electricity and magnetism) 4. Explosion resulting from explosives. PROPAGATION OF SOUND WAVES Vibration in the tuning fork produces disturbances in the surrounding air. When the prongs’ movement is outwards, the prongs push the surrounding air molecules away, creating a local compression. This disturbance of air layers is then passed from molecule to molecule by collisions, causing the local compression to move outwardly. When the prongs’ movement is inwards, a partial void, or rarefaction is created. Pressure differences causes the air mole-

cules to rush back into the region again. This periodic to-and-fro movement of the prongs will create alternating regions of compressions and rarefactions. The sound waves span outwardly parallel to the direction of the wave propagation (longitudinal nature). In air, compressions are regions where the pressure is higher than surrounding air and rarefactions are regions where pressure is lower than the surrounding air. Notes: The energy of the sound waves is propagated and carried by colliding particles of a material medium. Hence, a (material) medium is required in order to transmit these (energy) waves. The speed of energy propagation is dependent on the proximity Edgars Club @ 5 years

live smart club crammer of these particles in a medium. Hence, given that the proximity of particles in the air, liquids or solids is different, the speed of sound differs in air, liquids and solids. Sound travels faster in denser media. It travels faster in liquids than in gases and fastest in solids. RANGE OF AUDIBLE FREQUENCIES The human ear responds to sounds with frequencies in the range from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. This is called the audible range of the human ear. Examples of vibrating sources that produce sound in the audible range of frequencies are drums, guitar strings, tuning fork, human vocal cords and diaphragms of loudspeakers. In audible sound waves whose frequencies are less than 20 Hz are in the infrasonic range. Sources of infrasonic waves include earthquakes, thunder, volcanoes and waves produced by vibrating heavy machinery. The hearing ranges of elephants and whales extend into the Edgars Club @ 5 years

infrasonic region. Frequencies above 20,000 Hz are in the ultrasonic range. The audible range of dogs, cats, moths and mice extends into ultrasound frequencies. They can hear very high frequencies that humans cannot.

Loudness and Pitch

SS: DETERMINING THE SPEED OF SOUND IN AIR The speed of sound can be calculated with only two measurements: the distance of the sound source from the receiver the time taken for the sound wave to travel that distance. Precautions taken to reduce measurement errors: Exchange the positions of the sound source and the measuring device and repeat the experiment.

It will reduce the effect of wind on the speed of sound in air.Repeat the experiment several times and take the average value of the time intervals recorded to calculated the average speed of sound. Loudness and Pitch The human ear can distinguish two characteristics of sound. These are the loudness and pitch, and each refers to a sensation in the consciousness of the listener. LOUDNESS It is easy to distinguish among loud and soft sounds. The term loudness of a sound is self-descriptive. It depends primarily on the amplitude of the sound wave. The larger the amplitude, the louder the sound. Note: The standard unit of sound level is decibel. A sound is judged to be twice as loud as another, if its sound level is about 10 decibels higher. The reason why it is 10 and not twice the value is that decibel is a logarithmic unit. June 2019

WAYS TO RESPECTFULLY DISAGREE WITH YOUR PARENTS

84 84

Steps Parents Can Take When a Child Has Problems With a Teacher

I

t’s easier to agree than disagree. But we can learn a lot from conversations where we don’t see eye to eye — if we can listen and talk rationally, that is. Unfortunately, many us either shy away completely from disagreements or lose it when things don’t go our way. These 5 tips can help keep disagreements constructive — whether you’re talking to a parent, friend, or anyone else: club

June 2019

1

. Don’t make it personal. If you get upset, it can help to remember you’re mad at the idea or concept your parent (or friend, coach, coworker, etc.) is raising, not the person.

2

. Avoid putting down the other person’s ideas and beliefs. If you’ve ever been on the receiving end of someone’s tirade or put-downs, you know how valuable using respectful language

and behavior can be. So instead of saying what you might be thinking (“That’s a stupid idea!”), try: “I don’t agree, and here’s why.” Resist the temptation to yell, use sarcasm, or make derogatory comments and you’ll have a much better chance of getting your point across.

3

. Use “I” statements to communicate how you feel, what you think, and what you want or need. Using Edgars Club @ 5 years

“you” statements can sound argumentative. For example, telling your mom or dad, “You always remind me about my chores on Wednesdays when you know I have a lot of homework” has a very different tone from “I’m feeling pressured because I have a lot of homework tonight. Can I do those chores tomorrow?”

4

. Listen to the other point of view. Being a good listener is a way of showing that you respect and understand the other person’s perspective. That makes it more likely he or she will do the same for you. When the other person is talking, try to stop yourself from thinking about why you disagree or what you’ll say next. Instead, focus on what’s being said. When it’s your turn to talk, repeat any key points the other person made to show you listened and heard what was said. Then calmly present your case and why you disagree.

5

. Stay calm. This is the most important thing you can do to keep a conversation on track. Of Edgars Club @ 5 years

downtime teen talk

course, it’s a huge challenge to stay calm and rational when you feel angry or passionate about something — especially if the person you’re talking to gets heated. You may need to be the mature one who manages the conversation, even if the other person is a parent or someone who should know better.

WHEN DEALING WITH YOUR PARENTS REMEMBER

RESPECT GOES BEYOND difficult conversations, of course. Being helpful and considerate toward family members, teachers, or coaches in our everyday actions helps all of us (again, parents included!) establish a foundation for those times when we might disagree. WHEN PARENTS ARGUE WITH YOU ITS BECAUSE THEY CARE ABOUT YOU Parents hope their children eventually hold on to the values they instill in them into adulthood. It’s part of the genetic bond between a parent and child. So it’s natural that when they feel there’s a threat to this bond, they

begin to grow fearful, even toward your spiritual state. As hard as this might be to believe sometimes, your parents do really want the best for you. Despite their own shortcomings, they argue with you because they care about the values they’ve instilled in you. If they didn’t care about you, they wouldn’t be arguing with you about your convictions at all. DON’T STEP ON “VERBAL LANDMINES” IF YOU DON’T HAVE TO When parents may say something that makes you twitch, we often can feel a gut reaction to jump in and start correcting them. We must prove they’re wrong, right? Sometimes this might be right, but often times it just isn’t right. It may be more of your own pride speaking than anything else. When you’re in a family gathering, it often might be best to just shut your mouth unless absolutely necessary. James 3:5 shows us just how much damage our words can do: “So the tongue is a little member and boasts of great things. How great a forest is set June 2019

ablaze by a small fire!” You will know what is most likely to set your Sunday dinner on a straight course to a screaming match. So, just do your best to kill the forest fire before it starts. ll or nothing phrases like “you always” or “you never” when arguing. Accusing your mom or dad of doing something 100% of the time is a sure-fire way to put them on the defensive.

86

Instead, bring up specific examples and use words like “sometimes” or “occasionally.”When you use “all or nothing” thinking, you cut yourself off from seeing their point of view. You turn your parents into caricatures of themselves instead of well-rounded people who make mistakes. This approach is important in any argument, but especially during a time where both parties are trying to develop a more nuanced view of the other. Take a step back if you find yourself doing this when disagreeing with your parents. An arguclub

feel like you have more ammo in your bag, but piling on doesn’t validate an argument. It’s only makes the other person more defensive and less sympathetic to what you’re saying.

STAY FOCUSED. Family matters come with decades of baggage that hasn’t been fully unpacked. It’s easy to get sidetracked during a heated argument and think about every perceived injustice you’ve ever suffered.

PICK YOUR BATTLES. You can’t disagree on everything if you want a happy relationship with your parents. Even though it might hurt your jaw to grit those teeth, you’ll be happier in the long run if you let some things go. For example, if your parents eat red meat every day and you’re a staunch vegetarian, don’t bring up the horrors of factory farming when you’re visiting for Christmas. No one wants to be insulted in their own house, and it’s probably not a stand worth taking.

Stay focused on what you’re talking about. If you’re complaining about how they forgot to ask about your recent work promotion, don’t bring up the time in seventh grade when they missed your school play. Part of the difficulty of disagreeing with your parents is convincing them to see you as a fellow adult instead of a kid. If you bring up something from your childhood, accomplishing that is going to be very difficult. It’s frustrating to stay on track when you

If they criticize or make fun of your vegetarianism, then it’s time to speak up. In general, try to notice the difference between defending your sovereignty as an adult and looking for an excuse to pick a fight.
