Winter Tales – From the Marketing Desk

excited about how stores are looking, with updated colors, fabrics and styles readily available for you to choose from. Dressing for change of season can be challenging

for most people as the weather can change abruptly – hence one has to walk out of the house with an outfit suitable for all weather. Sounds tricky – but it’s actually not. We then use the term Edgars Club @ 5 years

“layering.” Layering is simply putting on several layers of garments which allows one to remove or add on should the weather get warmer or colder. We have many layering items available in-store and invite you to come in and get styled up. We love the month of July as this signifies the end of winter and coming in of spring and warmer weather. We

have just the looks for this weather presented in warm florals and light jackets. The best part of it is all items in-store are still available on account – which you can select the payback period suitable to you and your pocket, from 3 months to pay to 12 months to pay. Which means you can look good throughout the year! We look forward

to welcoming you instore this month, and would definitely like to hear from you. Please do drop us an email on theclub@edgars.co.zw telling us what you love or would like to see improved with The club. Happy shopping. Edgars Marketing Team

LAUNDER YOUR TOWELS TOGETHER: If you don’t want your towels to pill, launder them only with other towels. What is a “pill”? It’s when short fabric fibers rub together with the long fibers of bath towels, causing them to bunch and create little nubs on the fabric, or “pills.” Over drying can also lead to pills, so keep an eye on your drying time.

ELIMINATE MUSTY ODORS WITH BAKING SODA: Add a ½ cup of baking soda with your detergent in a wash cycle to eliminate the musty smells often associated with swimming towels or those left in a gym bag for a while.

5

AVOID FABRIC SOFTENER: This may seem like a contradiction, but fabric softeners will stop being effective after several uses and can actually damage your towels. Fabric softeners cause buildup and can mat your fibers down, which causes stiffness and a decrease in absorbency.

INEN POINTERS Bed linen should be washed at least once a week, especially if slept in every night. Our bed linen is not pre-shrunk and may seem slightly too big before the first wash. All our linen is made from 100% cotton percale with a 200 or a 300-thread count. Please take care when washing as too high a temperature can cause excessive shrinkage. We recommend that all our linen be washed at a temperature no higher than 40°C. You do not need to boil fine linen to achieve good results. We recommend using a fabric softener in your wash, as it keeps the fibres soft and smooth and makes ironing easier. Tumble Dry at a warm temperature, but do not leave the linen until it is bone dry, take it out while it is still slightly damp. Take care, as too high a temperature will cause excessive shrinkage. For best results when ironing, iron your linen while still slightly damp. Remember to stretch and re-shape the linen from corner to corner before allowing to dry properly. c July 2019

In the northern hemisphere, the humble jumpsuit has been the answer to the colder weather with various models and editors seen layering it over turtlenecks or under faux shearling stoles. It’s been sported in neutral, khaki, denim and caramel tones as fashion’s obsession with all things ’70s shows no sign of abating. Furthermore, the jumpsuit makes full use of everyday dressing up and dressing down conventions – you know, dress up with a heel, dress down with a sneaker. No matter what weight, size or body shape you are, no-one wants to look bigger than their actual size, which is why some women shy away from layering. But, we all know that one woman who manages to look cozy and chic without losing her shape because she’s mastered the art of smart layering. Edgars Club @ 5 years

ayer from thinnest to thickest The first rule about layering: always start with the thinnest item and build up from there. This ensures that your foundation is as slim-fit as possible, before adding more fabric to your look. hoose slimmer fits Which brings us to the thickness of winter clothes… It’s always better to layer thinner items, rather than trying to make a chunky knit fit under an oversized corduroy blazer. really get away with wearing almost anything under a fitted trench coat. A great tip to keep in mind is to wear layers that look good on their own too. This way, you can add and remove layers as the day becomes warmer or cooler, and still look good. t’s a balancing act Figuring out how to balance your body shape while adding layers is key. Pear shapes will do well with skinny jeans and extra layers on the upper body (think: tops, knits and outerwear). Layering like this should create an hourglass silhouette. For apple shapes, wearing a pair of tights (or three) under wide leg pants, while keeping the layering on the top half of your body minimal, is the best way to avoid looking bulky.

G

o sleeveless When considering how to layer your clothing in winter, choosing sleeveless jackets are a great idea! It’s a win because you can wear as many tops under it as you’d like. Just keep your proportions in mind. Unless you have a smaller upper body (in which case you can wear sleeveless puffer jackets), rather opt for long-line sleek gilet coats. e conscious of proportions Maintaining your body’s natural proportions is just as important as keeping the balance. You should never layer so much that your waist, shape of your legs, or bust is hidden. hen in doubt, add a belt Whether you’re layering a poncho or a simple jacket, if you’re feeling unsure, add a belt over it. A belt will immediately cinch in your waist, giving you an hourglass, slender appearance. Be sure to position the belt at your smallest point for the desired effect.

ESSENTIAL Here is How to Stay Fit This Winter

W

ith a winter chill in the air, people tend to avoid going outdoors and often skip the gym. But don’t let cold weather trump your desire to stay fit this winter. Instead, arm yourself with some coping strategies. While everyone else is scrambling to stick to their New Year’s resolutions, you’ll be coasting along, wondering why everyone is stressing about warmer weather and shorts season. Here are some simple fitness strategies to get you through the winter months: club

July 2019

1

. Be sure to warm up indoors before an outdoor workout to get blood flowing to your muscles. Cold and stiff muscles are more prone to injury. Consider jumping jacks, a jog on the treadmill or cycling. . Find a workout buddy for the winter season. Having a partner is great for accountability and even a little friendly competition. . Post progress pictures on fitness facebook page or join a whatsapp fitness group where you’ll find people with like-minded goals ready and willing to offer encouragement.

2 3

Edgars Club @ 5 years

4

. Try a new workout or find a fun class to join. Something new and different tends to create excitement and hold your interest longer than the same old workout you’ve been doing for months on end. . Set a goal for the spring, like running a marathon, entering a fitness competition or taking a vacation. With a goal or event to work toward you’ll be less likely to slack off. . Buy new training gear. New clothes and/or sneakers can often be a great incentive to exercise because you’ll want to put your new gear to use. Plus, you can’t wear the same tank tops and shorts you wore during your summer workouts, so make sure to layer up. . Make it a point to get outside and get some sun. The sunshine and daylight will provide a boost in energy, and the vitamin D from the sun will help regulate the immune system. Just make sure to put on sunscreen! Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean the harmful rays can’t do damage to your skin. Keep a food journal as you partake in all of the traditional holiday foods and desserts. Seeing the calories add up on paper may be just the motivation you need to deice the car and get to the gym. . Avoid wearing baggy and comfy clothes all winter long. They won’t tell the truth if you’re eating too many desserts or too much sweet potato casserole with brown sugar and marshmallows.

5

6

shop smart fitness Remember that you won’t be able to wear those over-size sweaters and sweats forever. . Hire a personal trainer during the winter months. The investment alone may keep you motivated to get to the gym. And it’s a trainer’s job to help push you safely through a workout even when you might not feel up to it. . If you’re committed to making your workouts happen in the morning, consider buying yourself an alarm clock that simulates sunrise. It will begin to gradually light the room before the set time, allowing you to gently wake and start your day.

Make Any Soup Creamier Here is how to make the perfect soup

1

. Add Cream: Let’s get the obvious one out of the way. Yes, you can definitely add cream to your soup. Whether you use a few tablespoons or a few cups, cream gives soup a silky mouthfeel and rich flavor. You can definitely add milk or other dairy as well, though it will taste gradually less creamy as you go down in percent. . Puree a Few Cups: Blend just a cup or two of your soup with a stick blender or in a food processor — not the whole batch, though. You just want to add a little body, but still keep the chunky goodness. . Add Stale Bread: A few slices of bread also help make a soup creamy. Tear them into pieces and let them soak in a cup or two of the hot soup before pureeing and

2

3

stirring back into the main pot. . Add Yogurt: Plain yogurt works much like cream when added to soups like our Avocado Soup, but with a lighter result. I also love the tangy flavor it adds to my soups. . Add Ground Nuts: Nuts were actually one of the first thickeners used to thicken soups and sauces, historically-speaking. Grind a handful of nuts until they have completely crumbled and are just verging on becoming a paste. In a small bowl, whisk the nuts together with some of the soup broth and then whisk it into the main soup. Cashews are an especially good choice. . Make a Beurre Manié: Sounds fancy, but don’t fret! Knead equal parts butter and flour into a thick paste, and then

4 5

6

whisk it into your soup until it has completely dissolved. Adding beurre manié is like a making reverse-roux, and it will thicken your soup in a similar way. . Add Flour, Cornstarch, or Other Thickener: Starches thicken soup and give it body. Whisk a few tablespoons of starch into a little of the broth in a separate bowl before whisking it into the main pot. This prevents the starch from clumping and helps it dissolve into the soup evenly. . Add Coconut Milk: One of my favorite dairy-free options. Just a quarter cup or so adds creaminess without drastically change the flavor of your soup. Of course, use more for a subtle coconut flavor!

WHAT IS SOY MILK Soy milk is a plant-based nondairy beverage, often consumed as an alternative to milk. It’s made from soybeans, and many brands fortify their soy milk with vitamins and minerals such as vitamin D and calcium. When comparing all plant milks, we can say, broadly, that soy milk is the most nutritionally similar to a lowfat cow’s milk. People who are lactose intolerant, which means that they have trouble digesting a sugar called lactose, which is the carbohydrate found in cow’s milk may consider soymilk as an alternative.

Soy milk offers culinary diversity, creamy texture, and a healthful nutritional profile, including essential omega-3 fatty acids [if fortified] and flavonoids that exert antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cardioprotective properties.

DEHYDRATION Bad Breath Is a Possible Warning Sign of Dehydration. Saliva has antibacterial properties, but dehydration can prevent your body from making enough saliva. If you’re not producing enough saliva, you can get bacterial overgrowth in the mouth, and one of the side effects of that is bad breath

KNOW WHICH IRON IS GOOD There are two types of iron: heme iron from animal sources and non-heme iron from plant sources. Heme iron is more easily absorbed by the body than plant-based non-heme iron, so it’s important to get both types of the nutrient in your diet. You’ll need to aim for nearly twice as much iron per day if you’re relying on plant sources alone. Iron gets used by the body to help make the hemoglobin in red blood cells, which then carry oxygen throughout the body Edgars Club @ 5 years

ape Verde is an archipelago consisting of ten volcanic islands (nine inhabited) in mid-Atlantic, located about 600km / 373mi west of Senegal on the African coast. A mild climate, deserted beaches, outstanding mountain landscapes, amazing fish and seafood, and the welcoming Cape Verdean people, make it the perfect year-round vacation destination. Here are the best attractions in Cape Verde. Use the map below when you’re planning your trip to this fascinating country that offers an authentic tropical experience.

1

It later became a forced labour camp for those opposing the regime. The visit to the Resistance Museum of Tarrafal lasts about one hour.

IMPULSE CONTROL ACTIVITIES for teens

86

I

The best way to teach is through specifically designed impulse control activities for teens.

mpulse control is an essential skill to develop. But I don’t need to convince you. MOST parents I talk to are already way on board with wanting to help their kid, tween or teen gain impulse-control (or self-control) skills. But actually helping our teens learn impulse control skills is a much different task. Talking about it, telling them they need more imclub

pulse control, and lectures won’t get us anywhere. The best way to teach is through specifically designed impulse control activities for teens, tweens and big kids. TIPS FOR PARENTS BEFORE TEACHING IMPULSE CONTROL ACTIVITIES FOR TEENS. Before you dive in- whenever you’re working with a teenager, you need to know it’s a two way street. We still have to prepare ourselves as parents, even

more than when they were younger. I have a couple of suggestions to help ensure that once you get to the point of actually implementing these impulse control activities for teens things will go more smoothly.

1

. HAVE REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS Don’t set the bar too high, but don’t set it too low, either. If you know what they’re currently capable of, your expectation should be 1 Edgars Club @ 5 years

or maybe 2 steps beyond that. Also, understand that there will always be some low-level impulsive ‘stuff ’ to their personality. Yes, it may drive you crazy, but try not to get bogged down by the little things. . USE ROUTINES TO YOUR ADVANTAGE You can initially reduce some of the need for impulse control by using routines. These are people who desperately need routines and structure. When your brain is acting like a pinball machine, structure is a safe place to rest; even if your teen seems resistant to it at first. If you’re on a diet, (which takes an immense amount of impulse control) you would set yourself up for success by removing the treats from your house, and planning out your meals. Give your teens the same benefit with routine in their life! Just because they’re impulsive, doesn’t mean they need- or even want- everything to be spontaneous. . GIVE EXTRA SUPPORT TO THE EXTRA CHALLENGING TIMES If you can, create extra structure around a par-

ticularly stressful time of day (or event- like exams) to help find more peace. Is getting to school on time a challenge? Implement a routine for night that includes making sure clothes are laid out, homeworkand anything else they need- is already in the backpack, etc. . GET THEIR BUY-IN When you’re working with a teen, you need their buy-in to implement change. Find the common ground during a calm moment. For example, “Can we both agree that there’s too much fighting in the mornings before school?” Instead of “You’re always running late, and it’s not ok.” Maybe your teen has some ideas about what would help them be on time? If you give them the time and space to open up, you might be surprised how insightful they are! . PICK ONE AREA TO WORK ON AT A TIME Have you ever had a big project going on at work, while you’re trying to stay on a very strict diet, and you’re also not spending money because you’re on a tight budget? It’s completely overwhelming to

focus on so many things, and share your attention span and impulse control over so many facets of your life. Classwork, peers, girl/boyfriends, jobs, parents, and extracurriculars are all vying for that limited amount of impulse control. So, from where I’m standing, you have two choices for deciding which area to start with.

O

ption 1– Where is impulse-control getting your kid into trouble the most? Are they interrupting, or wandering, or chronically late? Choose one topic, and if you can, break it down even smaller, like working on not interrupting your teachers (we’ll get to parents later). Think of it as ‘niching down.’ ption 2– Where will you be able to make the biggest impact the quickest? Will simply making sure the homework actually gets back to school be the biggest difference maker? You could choose to focus on that first.

EED YOUR HELP Teens are doing everything they can to gain more and more independence- which is completely developmentally appropriate! So I understand that it feels incongruent to say that they need even more help right now. But when we give them a new task to try, they’re going to need our support. If they have support, they’ll be more successful, which will give them more confidence, which will make them want to continue on their own. Once they’re confident in the task, you can peel back some of your support- layer by layer. . PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE Impulse control is best compared to a muscle, and not a set of knowledge. You can’t go to the gym once a month, or even once a week, and really expect to grow stronger. This isn’t something that can be taught once, and then you expect them to know how to do it. It will take consistent work, for a lifetime, to grow and keep the impulse control ‘muscles’ strong.

8

. BE A GOOD ROLE-MODEL The need to continue practicing impulse control extends into our adult lives. So be the best role-model you can! If you can’t be perfect, (and no one expects you to be!) talk about it with your kid. You can even check out ideas for improving your own impulse control.

LIFE SKILLS TO IMPROVE IMPULSE CONTROL So, now that

you have your teen’s buyin, let’s talk about what skills actually make a difference in improving impulse control. Then we’ll get to translating those skills into actual impulse control activities for teens. First, teenagers need to continue in their emotional, mental and social development. As they continue developing, the brain matures through experience and they can start to feel some of the regret, and see the social consequences of poor impulse control. And with greater mental development, they will gain the ability to think about different

behaviors that would lead to different outcomes. Second, we need to help them with their stress-reduction skills. Think about when you’re most likely to break your diet and have that dessert, or glass of wine, you told yourself you wouldn’t. It’s not when you’re calm and in control. It’s when you’re feeling stressed out, and out of control. Most teens experience a tremendous amounts of stress, so giving them better stress-reduction techniques can help improve impulse control in the same way it can help you stick to a diet, etc. Third, we can help our teenagers develop mindfulness. This goes hand in hand with stress-reduction. But by learning mindfulness, too, they can start sensing their body’s physical cues about when stress and impulses are about to take over. Mindfulness is excellent for helping overall regulation. If you think of your teen as a car, that would be the care and maintenance part. It’s also great for quick stress-reduction. SUPPLIES: •light blue cardstock • yellow and green construction paper • black tissue paper squares • 2-inch circle (for tracing) • paper cup (for tracing) • scissors • glue stick DIRECTIONS . Cut out about 16 2-inch circles out of your yellow construction paper. The easiest way I’ve found to do this is to accordion fold my construction paper 3 times. Trace a 2-inch circle onto the top piece in the accordion fold and then cut out the circle. You should get 4 circles each time you cut. Continue doing this until you have about 16 circles. You might need less or more depending on how you fold your circles.

. Glue your stem and the large yellow circle onto your light blue cardstock. Fold

two sides of your yellow paper circles inward making a smaller point on one end and a rounded end on the other. Once you are finished folding all of your circles, glue them around the yellow circle on your blue cardstock. . Fold the green circle the same way as you did the yellow circles and glue it onto the stem for a leaf. . Scrunch up a handful of black tissue paper squares into small balls.
