What our students have to say…

“ “ “ Ellie Clarke

BA (Hons) Drama and English Literature

When I first visited Edge Hill University I really liked the campus and how everything you need is on hand while places like Manchester and Liverpool are only a short journey away. Now I am studying here I can honestly say that I am loving both my degree and, just as importantly, the social element of student life! Having lots of things to do and places to visit that are easy to get to is allowing me to really enjoy my university experience.

The thing I like most about my BSc (Hons) Marketing with Advertising course is that alongside gaining knowledge of my subject, I am also learning things that will help me in my life outside of my studies. My lecturers are all established in their field and share their wealth of practical experience alongside their theoretical knowledge.

The tutors are always on hand to give advice and guidance with an example of this being when we had to organise our placement module. Knowing that I am a keen ecologist, staff in the department took the time to help me secure my placement at a local nature reserve, which turned out to be a brilliant experience that I thoroughly enjoyed. I learned a great deal from my time there, from conservation management techniques to the importance of visitor care.

By the time you complete your studies at Edge Hill University, you will have become a very knowledgeable, questioning and focused practitioner. You will also have spent time working in three different local hospital trusts too, which ensures you have a clear idea of where you would like to work in the future.

For me, the best thing about the BA (Hons) Primary Education with QTS programme is being able to study with people who are as passionate about education as you are. The practical placements and activities you undertake are other excellent aspects as they reinforce the theoretical and academic side of the course. As you progress through your studies you advance from having an observational and teaching assistant role to becoming a full-time teacher. You receive the best possible in-school experience and learn a lot very quickly.

When I first arrived to study my BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy degree I absolutely loved how friendly everyone was and how people were just so approachable and happy to help. Also, during my third week, I had to complete a first aid at work course and I was fascinated by all the different treatments used, which confirmed that my ambitions lay with treating people with injuries and helping them back to recovery.

Accommodation – What are my choices? On-campus accommodation

Edge Hill currently has over 2,000 single study bedrooms available within halls of residence located on the Ormskirk campus. Approximately one fifth of all our rooms are provided on a catered basis while the remaining accommodation is self-catered.

Students residing in catered halls of residence will be issued with a Unicard which is automatically loaded with a cash value by catering services and can be used instead of money when purchasing food from the various on-campus catering outlets.

If you live in a self-catering hall you will have access to a fully equipped kitchen which includes a cooker, microwave and freezer. Also provided are a kettle, toaster, iron and ironing board.

What do I need to bring?

All rooms are furnished with a bed, wardrobe, desk and chair and you are encouraged to personalise your space with posters, photos and other decorative items. You will need to bring your own bed linen (including a duvet and pillows) and towels as well as crockery, cutlery, glassware, cooking utensils and pots and pans (with exception of Founders Court, Graduates Court, Chancellors Court, Chancellors South and Palatine Court where pots and pans are provided for the induction hobs).

How much will it cost?

All halls are offered on a 40 week contract, running from September to late June. Prices for 2017 will range from £72 to £119 per week, including utility bills, depending on the halls of residence you choose. You will be expected to arrange to pay your damage deposit of £150 online and, either pay the accommodation fees in full, or arrange scheduled payment instalments before you move in. Details of this will be sent out with your Licence Agreement in the summer.

Applicants who accept Edge Hill University as their firm choice will be invited to apply for accommodation in halls of residence. Details of how to apply will be emailed to the address from your UCAS application from January 2017 onwards.

On-site accommodation at Edge Hill has increased substantially over the last four years but, if the University finds that campus accommodation is over-subscribed, applications will be prioritised to take into account various factors including the distance from the student's home address to the University. Applicants who are not allocated a room on campus will be given options for off-campus accommodation (including private halls and landlords) along with support in finding suitable accommodation. i

Further details on the application process can be found at: ehu.ac.uk/accommodation

When will I find out if I have been allocated a room?

In August, the Accommodation Team will notify you of your place in halls by sending you an email with your Licence Agreement or, if you have not been allocated a place in halls, details of accommodation information sessions and how to access the list of available off-campus accommodation. i

Full-time undergraduate degree students (UK and EU only)

The standard undergraduate tuition fee at Edge Hill University will be £9,250, subject to Government approval, for all BA, BSc and LLB degrees. Full-time students who are studying for their first degree can benefit from a range of financial support.

Eligible students starting an undergraduate programme in 2017/18 will not have to pay up-front for the cost of tuition fees. Instead, the cost can be covered by a Tuition Fee Loan (applied for via Student Finance), which you do not have to start repaying until you have left your course and are earning over £21,000 per year.

Loans for Living Costs

Usually called a maintenance loan, this money is available for help towards the cost of accommodation, food and travel. A loan of up to £8,430 may be available if you live away from home and study outside London (e.g. Edge Hill University). A loan of up to £7,097 may be available if you live with your parents.

EU Students

Tuition fees for EU students starting a full-time undergraduate programme are the same as for UK students. For further information on the financial support available for EU students, please visit ukcisa.org.uk. i

i

On the Student Finance application form you will be asked to enter the details of your chosen university. You will probably NOT be able to make this decision until you have visited all your university choices. To prevent any delays with your application you can complete this section with the details of any one of your five choices. When you have made your final choice and confirmed this with UCAS, you can change your course details, if necessary, within your online account - this process is quick and easy to complete.

Travelling to Edge Hill University

Edge Hill University’s Ormskirk Campus is located between Liverpool and Preston in West Lancashire. This section of your handbook will look at the best ways of travelling to and from the University.

Public Transport

Ormskirk has one railway station which is located a short distance from the bus station, and within walking distance of the campus. There are regular trains to and from Preston via Northern Rail and all stations to Liverpool Central on Merseyrail’s Northern Line.

A number of buses connect Ormskirk to the surrounding area, most of which stop at the bus station in the town centre. Edge Hill students can benefit from unlimited travel on Arriva buses throughout the North West region by purchasing an Arriva North West Student Saver ticket.

The Edge Link (EL1) bus service is a fast, cheap and reliable way to get to the campus from Ormskirk bus station. During term-time this service runs every 15 minutes, 8.05am – 8.45pm, Monday-Friday (excluding Bank Holidays) and 8.05am – 5.45pm on Saturdays. This service is FREE with your student ID card.

If you live locally or you are allocated a room in halls of residence the cheapest and easiest way to get around is on your own two feet! You’ll find it easy to walk from the campus into town, a journey that takes no more than about 15 minutes.

Alternatively, you may decide to cycle to campus and we offer a variety of secure storage solutions for bikes and motorcycles/scooters.

Travelling by Car

The Ormskirk campus is easily accessible by road via the M6 motorway. Leave the M6 at Junction 26, join the M58 towards Skelmersdale and leave at Junction 3, taking the A570 towards Ormskirk and Southport. The campus can also be reached from Preston or Liverpool via the A59.

Parking on-campus Car parking on-campus is limited and cannot always accommodate all vehicles during peak periods. We therefore recommend, wherever possible, that students use public transport.

37 Students coming to study at Edge Hill for the first time will need to enrol and receive a student number before a parking permit application can be made. Students who are living in halls of residence are not eligible to park on-campus. There are some exceptions for students on placement.

The issuing of parking permits is based on clear eligibility criteria, however the provision of a permit does not guarantee a parking space due to the limited capacity on-campus. Even if you do have a permit, we suggest that you build in sufficient time to park off-campus when necessary.
