Welcome Congratulations on your offer of a place at Edge Hill University. This handbook gives you all the information you need as an applicant to one of our courses and includes: what happens next, things you need to do, important deadlines and how to find out more. We will need to email you from time-to-time using the email address from your UCAS application form, so please make sure you check this regularly. If you change your email address you need to inform UCAS and the University as soon as possible to ensure you do not miss any vital information.

Please read the deadlines on pages 10 and 11, which tell you when you need to apply for finance, scholarships and accommodation, and when you should tell UCAS about your choices.

Whatever you need to know at any stage, our staff are available to help. See pages 34-35 for contact details or email think@edgehill.ac.uk.

The accuracy of the guidance in this booklet is based on the latest information available at the time of writing. However, such information is subject to change, sometimes at short notice. Printed October 2017.

Everything we do at Edge Hill Students’ Union is shaped by students. We’re here to ensure student voices are heard, valued and acted upon. Our vision is to create the best student experience we can, for as many Edge Hill students as possible.

We want to: -

Understand the priorities of our students and respond effectively Ensure students enjoy a high quality academic experience Support and encourage students to develop their interests and shape their future Inspire students to develop new ideas, be creative, and campaign for change Provide a safe and sociable environment to help students make friends, have fun, and love university life.

We are committed to improving the quality of everything we do for our students, and to achieve this, we encourage student feedback and ideas, and offer guidance and support if things go wrong.

The Student Voice We have a team of elected Officers who are here to engage with, and represent, the student body on a variety of issues that affect our students. We want to understand the real issues facing our students today, and we represent their views at University committees and boards. We also run a range of campaigns throughout the year to highlight issues and create change, so we encourage student involvement at every opportunity.

Advice & Support Our hugely popular Advice Centre is on campus to offer students support and guidance in key areas such as academic issues, welfare issues, housing, money and debt. We are totally independent from the university and so our advice is confidential, impartial, and free (and we make a great cuppa!).

Social & Fun We’re at the heart of the social scene on campus, and in addition to our SU Bar, Venue club, SU shop and SUBWAY™, we also run over 70 societies and the ‘Team Edge Hill’ competitive sports teams who compete around the country as part of the BUCS league. We want our students to make lifelong friends and find like-minded people to share their university experience with, however unique their interests.

We pride ourselves on creating fantastic student events for everyone, with a jampacked Welcome Week schedule, an extensive ‘Give it a Go’ calendar, and the epic Graduation Ball! i

What our students have to say…

When I first visited Edge Hill University I really liked the campus and how everything you need is on hand while places like Manchester and Liverpool are only a short journey away. Now I am studying here I can honestly say that I am loving both my degree and, just as importantly, the social element of student life! Having lots of things to do and places to visit that are easy to get to is allowing me to really enjoy my university experience.

The University is really modern and has excellent facilities, it is so much better than the other universities I visited. Like the campus my course is really up-todate. Something might be in the news one day and in your lecture the next, so you are learning how real businesses are operating right now. You also get the historical background as well, so understand how it all fits together.

The tutors are always on hand to give advice and guidance with an example of this being when we had to organise our placement module. Knowing that I am a keen ecologist, staff in the department took the time to help me secure my placement at a local nature reserve, which turned out to be a brilliant experience that I thoroughly enjoyed. I learned a great deal from my time there, from conservation management techniques to the importance of visitor care.

Edge Hill University is unique to me because from the moment you step onto campus you feel part of a community. It is so welcoming and very student-focused. As part of the course there is a lot of simulation in university which gives clear insights into some of the real-life scenarios we may face as midwives in practice. There is also ample opportunity to share experiences and provide peer support within group discussions, which is really valuable.

I love my course! Before I started at Edge Hill I thought I’d just come to university, attend a lecture and then go home, but this is so much better than I expected. Our lectures are genuinely fun, the topics are really interesting and we get to discuss issues and voice our own opinions.

I feel that I am in a great position to be able to pursue my career goals as a result of studying this course. The projects and assignments we are set are all designed to replicate scenarios that can arise in work, while the benefit of the placement means that on top of my theoretical knowledge I also possess practical experience, which can only stand me in good stead.

Applicant Visit Days

Going to university is a rewarding, life changing decision and will be one of the most exciting things you ever do. When choosing which university to attend, you are making a decision which will determine where you spend your next three years.

We believe, as do most schools and colleges, that it is important to make your decision based on the university and the course you think is right for you. We are aware that some students are being made Unconditional Offers by the universities which they have applied to this year, but we believe that you should not make your decision purely based on whether a university is prepared to make your offer Unconditional if you choose them.

At Edge Hill, it is not our policy to make Unconditional Offers to applicants who are sitting their A Level, BTEC or equivalent qualifications. We set what we believe are stretching entry requirements and we encourage applicants to work hard to achieve the very best grades that they can. We have strong academic standards and we want students who are passionate about their subject and who want to be part of an exciting and dynamic community of lecturers and like-minded students. We also want students who are committed to their own success. For that reason, we do not compromise our standards by making Unconditional Offers to applicants in order to encourage them to come to us regardless of the grades they achieve.

We believe it is in your best interests to remember that your exam grades are not just about getting into university. You will need to include your grades in all of your future job applications and many employers will be influenced by the results you have achieved.

However, we do recognise that sometimes exams don’t always go to plan and sometimes the grades you get are not always what you had hoped for. If that is the situation you find yourself in, then we will be happy to talk to you. If you have been committed to our University, and if we can see that you visited us and engaged with the admissions process, then we will look again at your application and your reference when we get your results. If you have narrowly missed out on your grades we will take that into account when making our decisions.

If you have any questions about your offer, please get in touch and discuss it with us and we hope you will be able to visit us soon to find out more about the student experience we offer at Edge Hill. Wherever you choose to go and study in September, we hope you have an exciting time getting to know your chosen subject in greater depth. i

Our popular on-campus accommodation provides over 2,200 single study bedrooms and 24-hour security.

Living on campus means that our students can find everything they need within a few minutes’ walk including department buildings, lecture theatres, the University library, IT resources, cafes and restaurants, shop, launderette and the sports centre.

What do I need to bring? All rooms are furnished with a bed, wardrobe, desk and chair and you are encouraged to personalise your space with posters, photos and other decorative items. You will need to bring your own bed linen (including a duvet and pillows) and towels as well as crockery, cutlery, glassware, cooking utensils and pots and pans (with exception of Founders East, Founders West, Graduates Court, Chancellors Court, Chancellors South and Palatine Court where pots and pans are provided for the induction hobs).

How much will it cost? All halls are offered on a 40 week contract, running from mid-September to late June. Prices for 2018 will range from £74 to £124 per week, including utility bills, depending on the halls of residence you choose. Our Accommodation Team offer a range of support services to help you find somewhere suitable, including a register of local student properties, practical advice and the chance to meet up with other students so you can look for houses together.

How to apply for on-campus accommodation

Applicants who accept Edge Hill University as their firm choice will be invited to apply for accommodation in halls of residence. Details of how to apply will be emailed to the address on your UCAS application from January 2018 onwards.

On-site accommodation at Edge Hill has increased substantially over the last five years but, in the unlikely event that the University finds that campus accommodation is over-subscribed, applications will be prioritised to take into account various factors including the distance from the student's home address to the University. Applicants who are not allocated a room on campus will be given options for offcampus accommodation (including private halls and landlords) along with support in finding suitable accommodation. i

Further details on the application process can be found at: ehu.ac.uk/accommodation

When will I find out if I have been allocated a room? In August, the Accommodation Team will notify you of your place in halls by sending you an email with details of your room offer and a link to your Licence Agreement. If you have not been allocated a place in halls, details of how to access the list of available, registered off-campus accommodation will be provided. i

Travelling to Edge Hill University

Edge Hill University’s Ormskirk Campus is located between Liverpool and Preston in West Lancashire. This section of your handbook will look at the best ways of travelling to and from the University.

Public Transport Ormskirk has one railway station which is located a short distance from the bus station, and within walking distance of the campus. There are regular trains to and from Preston via Northern Rail and all stations to Liverpool Central on Merseyrail’s Northern Line.

A number of buses connect Ormskirk to the surrounding area, most of which stop at the bus station in the town centre. Edge Hill students can benefit from unlimited travel on Arriva buses throughout the North West region by purchasing an Arriva North West Student Saver ticket.

The Edge Link (EL1) bus service is a fast, cheap and reliable way to get to the campus from Ormskirk bus station. Currently during term-time this service runs every 15 minutes, 8.05am – 9.25pm, Monday-Friday (excluding Bank Holidays) and 8.05am – 5.45pm on Saturdays. This service is FREE with your student ID card.

If you live locally or you are allocated a room in halls of residence the cheapest and easiest way to get around is on your own two feet! You’ll find it easy to walk from the campus into town, a journey that takes no more than about 15 minutes.

Alternatively, you may decide to cycle to campus and we offer a variety of secure storage solutions for bikes and motorcycles/scooters.

Travelling by Car The Ormskirk campus is easily accessible by road via the M6 motorway. Leave the M6 at Junction 26, join the M58 towards Skelmersdale and leave at Junction 3, taking the A570 towards Ormskirk and Southport. The campus can also be reached from Preston or Liverpool via the A59.

Parking on-campus Car parking on-campus is limited and cannot always accommodate all vehicles during peak periods. We therefore recommend, wherever possible, that students use public transport.

The issuing of parking permits is based on clear eligibility criteria, however the provision of a permit does not guarantee a parking space due to the limited capacity on-campus. Even if you do have a permit, we suggest that you build in sufficient time to park off-campus when necessary.

Please visit edgehill.ac.uk/sustainability/travel to find out more about parking on-campus and see details of alternative parking provision close to the University.
