LIST Stealing Sheep Suffragette Tribute Featuring 3rd Edge Dance Company PERFORMANCES & EVENTS

Fresh from a tour of festivals around the UK, including Latitude, Festival No.6 and Head for the Hills, and after being named as one of the major highlight’s of this year’s Liverpool Sound City Festival, Stealing Sheep bring their epic Suffragette Tribute to Edge Hill Unviersity for a processional extravaganza across campus. Co-commissioned by Edge Hill University and Manchester-based creative music charity Brighter Sound, Stealing Sheep’s Suffragette Tribute brings together 30 female musicians and dancers in a truly unique and powerful performance.

3 Maghull Wind Orchestra Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Maghull Wind Orchestra The British Association of Symphonic Bands and Wind Ensembles present a programme of contemporary wind band works from composers such as Eric Whitacre, John Barnes-Chance, and Philip Sparke. Including, new works commissioned by BASBWE from local composers Adam Dutch and Adam Roberts. The concert will be performed by the Maghull Wind Orchestra joined by students of the Edge Hill Symphonic Wind Band. Conductor: Phil Shotton

For the evening The Red Bar will become a cabaret style jazz club and the quartet will entertain you by playing jazz standards from the 1930's onwards and popular songs from the American songbook - swing music at its best! During the second half of the performance, audience members can 'sit in' with the quartet and experience playing with a professional group. If you are an vocalist or instrumentalist and would like to sit in with the band for a number or two during the second set, this can be arranged on the night.

Breath-taking acrobatic skills combined with wit, humour and slick choreography (by Edge Hill University’s very own Michelle Man) make this show a perfect mix for all the family. It’s four guys hanging out, teasing and playing with each other, taunting and supporting each other on an ingenious set that constantly morphs into new landscapes. Sometimes they work together and sometimes against each other, but in the end they are connected by the strong bond that is their common humanity.

Unity Theatre's sell out co-production comes to The Arts Centre! Josette Bushell-Mingo’s powerful connection to legendary artist and activist Nina Simone, performed with an exceptional live band. A searing and soulful theatre piece inspired by the life and music of Nina Simone. Taking in the singer’s political acts as part of the Civil Rights Movement in 1960s America as well as the struggles in her personal life. Versions of some of Nina Simone’s best-loved songs combine with a clear provocation in this production directed by Dritëro Kasapi. Ensemble 10/10 - 21st Birthday Concert PERFORMANCES & EVENTS

They call him a ‘Holy Minimalist’, but there’s nothing small about the achievement of Arvo Pärt. Centred, sophisticated and profoundly beautiful, it’s no wonder that Pärt’s music has become Estonia’s greatest musical export. As Ensemble 10/10 turns 21, and Estonia celebrates 100 years of independence, this is a portrait of a small nation with a big musical voice. Three pieces by Pärt form the quiet centre of a concert that places the utterly individual sounds of Lepo Sumera and Erkki-Sven Tüür alongside the music of Liverpool composer Stephen Davismoon and a premiere from Grace-Evangeline Mason, our Christopher Brooks Competition Prize Winner, in association with the Rushworth Foundation.

Helen Newall - Sounds, Visions and Inward Signiﬁcances American writer Susan Sontag has said that “Art is a form of consciousness”, and Hélène Cixous that we “annihilate the world with a book”. Exploring the concept of art as a process which enables its makers and observers to approach the inapproachable, Professor Helen Newall will present an Inaugural Lecture Performance, using Isadora Duncan’s ethos of “If I could tell you what it meant, there would be no point in dancing it!”.

Helen Newall is Professor of Theatre Praxis in the Department of Performing Arts at Edge Hill University. She is a writer, director, and digital artist, and her research involves installations, performative documentation and immersivity with a specific interest in commemoration, the First World War and site responsive community writing. Helen has written for a number of prestigious institutions including The Nuffield Theatre, Southampton, HTV-West Television Workshop, and The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.

But when he meets his wife, she states he’d better be prepared for the fact she wants babies… a pretty strong opening line for a first date! What follows is the hilarious, honest, warm story of two people with cerebral palsy traversing the ups and downs of parenthood. Laurence starred in BBC1’s documentary We Won’t Drop the Baby and recently featured on The One Show. He’s been Shortlist’s Funniest New Comedian, an Amused Moose Edinburgh Laughter Awards finalist and is currently developing a sitcom for Channel 4.

Rose is the author of Who’s Who When Everyone Is Someone Else (a novel about improbable books and the joys and sorrows of reading), and the editor of The Biographical Dictionary of Literary Failure (a kind-of novel about lost and forgotten writers.) He has also left a trail of short stories around, some of which have appeared in eminent publications, and others in some not-so-eminent ones. He has a PhD in short fiction from Edge Hill University. This event, which celebrates the return of one of Edge Hill's finest creative alumni, will also feature short readings from MA students.

Edge Hill University Press is proud to launch, in partnership with Pluto Press, its third publication: Scenes from the Revolution: Making Political Theatre (1968-2018). Edited by Kim Wiltshire and Billy Cowan, who worked with a team of Edge Hill Creative Writing student interns, the book is a collection of essays, interviews and extracts of lost or previously unpublished plays that together form an exploration of making political theatre over the past 50 years, since the Theatres Act of 1968 ended censorship. The launch will include a reading from one of the original essays, a script in hand performance of extract from a lost gay play (Men by Noel Greig and Don Milligan) and an opportunity to buy discounted copies of the book as well as talk to the editors about the concept behind the book.

Vahni Capildeo launches her second collection with Carcanet at this event, Venus as a Bear, a PBS Selector's Choice for 2018. Her previous collection, Measures of Expatriation, was awarded the Forward Prize for Best Collection in 2016. Capildeo is renowned as a multilingual, cross-genre writer whose work is grounded in time experienced through place. John Wedgwood Clarke was born in St Ives, Cornwall in 1969. He set up the Beverley Literature and Bridlington Poetry Festivals, and ran them for ten years. In 2013 he published Ghost Pot, which featured scenery and wildlife from the North Yorkshire coast. His second fulllength collection of poetry, titled Landfill, was mostly inspired by a residency at Scarborough's rubbish dump, and was published in September 2017.

Michael explores the Minnesota Bard’s interaction with literature, and with the poetry of the blues.

Michael has appeared at the Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame and at Dylan Conferences at Minnesota, Vienna and Bristol Universities. His Canterbury Festival event was the best-attended that year; at the New School NYC the room was overflowing for his talk, as were halls in Galway, Ireland, and at the University of Texas at Austin.

This is an arresting, untraditional Shakespeare with powerful performances, striking design and sensory surprises. We have stripped back action and character to zoom in on the dynamics of the killer couple, tracking their murderous ambitions, escalating anxieties and disintegrating bonds against a backdrop of sensual pleasure and normalized violence. The setting walks an uneasy line between the regal and the domestic, exposing an austere brutality underpinning the noble pretensions of personal and political power. Expect a boisterous, playful Macbeth with ribald humour and a muscular undertow of menace.

Land of Promise

Land of Promise is a words & music presentation which journeys through three and a half centuries of radical thought, writing & song about the connections between art, social justice and our living environment. Using songs, readings, film & images the show tells a story of the fund of radical ideas and the political will that is the legacy of the town planning and Utopian movement. In doing so, it poses questions about the apparent lack of political will for change in our own times and offers a perspective on how that collective will has been suppressed â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and how it may be rekindled. The tale traces a lineage from the diggers at St George's Hill in 1649 to the eco neighbourhoods of Freiburg via the Post-War New Towns movement and radical interventions by people around the world to reclaim our dying cities today. Land of Promise is performed by The Town & Country Planning Association with guest speakers and musicians Chris Ellis and Rosie Toll.

The Lives of Others Symposium The symposium 'The Lives of Others' seeks to investigate the ways in which people and their stories have inspired artists, writers, film makers, musicians, performers and activists. Speakers from a range of disciplines will consider modes of storytelling, the right to authorship and the fine line between empathy and exploitation. The event accompanies an exhibition of the same name by Tabitha Moses. The seed for the symposium was planted when the artist received a request to permanently remove a prize-winning work of hers from public display. This led to questions and conversations about the ethics and practice of appropriation, culminating in The Lives of Others.

Steve Pilgrim Following his stunning performance with double bass legend Danny Thompson at The Arts Centre in 2017, Steve returns with a Folk/Jazz full band of merriment to celebrate the release of his ‘Magic Strings Session’ album. With his set of honest and haunting songs the night promises to be acoustically melancholic and raucous in equal measure. Through his songs Steve aims to bend pain and hope into something beautiful and cathartic.

Who hasn’t sometimes found their parents and siblings a challenge to connect with? These two works are attempts to settle accounts with family members. In the film “The Story Of The World In Pictures” Roger Hill addresses his father and brother to try to explain how the World has taken him far away from them and why. In the performance piece “Consolation No 3” he deploys his transgender “other” Mandy Romero and his pianistic skills to lay to rest his difficult relationship with his mother. In both works the two worlds of feeling and thought are poetically linked.

The show presents a blend of Victorian carols and midwinter folk songs which paint a vivid and colourful picture of the festive season in Dickens’ time. The second half is an hour-long musical retelling of his most iconic novella - the tale of how ﬂinty-hearted miser Ebenezer Scrooge undergoes several ghostly visitations over the course of a cold and bitter Christmas Eve and awakes the following morning transformed into the epitome of the Christmas spirit - warm-hearted, generous and loving. This heartwarming tale is presented entirely in narrative song, using brandnew lyrics set to traditional English folk and carol melodies.

La Grande Parade

Go to the circus. Leave your rectangles, your geometric windows, to the country of circles in action. It is so human to break through restraints, to spread out, to grow toward freedom… to escape from the ground, to leave it … (Fernand Léger 1881-1955). As part of the Tate Liverpool’s Fernand Léger exhibition (November 2018-March 2019), La Grande Parade re-imagines the artist's work and ideas in a contemporary context. For Léger, the circus was a ‘marvellous world’ that exceeded all other kinds of performance with its dazzling spectacle, embrace of danger and reliance on precision and skill. Working between art forms with circus as a medium or ‘glue’ for interdisciplinary performance, La Grande Parade animates the galleries and beyond in a celebration of Léger’s enigmatic yet exuberant work.

Angry Birds by Dougal Irvine

A new punk musical for the politically cynical. In a failing school a class learn about a group of ‘posh birds’ who won the vote for women 100 years ago. But as they grasp the story they realise that the battle is still raging and they are on the front line. Suffragette? It’s not over yet! 100 years, to the day, that women were first able to vote in the general election third year Edge Hill musical theatre students will be performing this wonderful new British musical as part of the show's national premiere. Having worked with writer Dougal Irvine on the official soundtrack for Angry Birds back in May it is now our pleasure to bring this powerful piece to vivid life as part of the university's Wonder Women programme. To perform this musical within an institution with such strong links to women's suffrage is a real privilege.

Dragons of the Pool

Artist, ďŹ lmmaker and academic, Rosa Fong worked with community group, The Dragons of the Pool, a group of sons and daughters who believe that their Chinese fathers were repatriated by the British government between 1945-46, to create a multimedia exhibition, documenting the story of the forced repatriation of Chinese seamen in Liverpool just after the Second World War. Over a thousand Chinese seamen disappeared from families in Liverpool, never to be heard of again. Video interviews and an audio installation give a historical and personal account of this hidden history with an introduction by actor, David Yip.

Edge Hill University is the sponsor of Tate Liverpool’s Op Art In Focus Exhibition. Op art – short for optical art – emerged in the 1960s. Its leading figures included Bridget Riley, Jesus Rafael Soto and Victor Vasarely. The display moves beyond the typical period of op art and includes works by more contemporary artists such as Angela Bulloch. Included is a rare installation of Jim Lambie’s Zobopwhich floods the entire gallery floor with psychedelic patterning. Multi-award-winning drama The Madness of George III will be broadcast live to cinemas, in National Theatre Live’s first ever broadcast from Nottingham Playhouse. Written by one of Britain’s best-loved playwrights Alan Bennett (The History Boys, The Lady in the Van), this epic play was also adapted into a BAFTA Award-winning film following its premiere on stage in 1991.
