Martin Carthy For more than 50 years Martin Carthy has been one of folk music's greatest innovators, one of its best loved, most enthusiastic and, at times, most quietly controversial of figures. His skill, stage presence and natural charm have won him many admirers, not only from within the folk scene, but also far beyond it. He's a ballad singer, a ground-breaking acoustic and electric-guitarist and an authoritative interpreter of newly composed material. He always prefers to follow an insatiable musical curiosity rather than cash in on his unrivalled position. Perhaps, most significant of all, are his settings of traditional songs with guitar, which have influenced a generation of artists, including Bob Dylan and Paul Simon, on both sides of the Atlantic. “Arguably the greatest English folk song performer, writer, collector and editor of them all” Q Magazine

Together, George and Nir confront this chaos head-on. And invite you along for the ride. “It’s a beautiful and touching experience, leaping from flights of fantasy to grim seriousness and brimming with laughter and tears throughout” ★★★★ British Theatre Guide

Stuart Waters

Greg Wohead

Rockbottom

Celebration, Florida

Rockbottom is a powerful, topical new dance theatre solo from Stuart Waters, a successful performer for 20 years making his debut as an independent artist.

Featuring two unrehearsed performers who have never met, Celebration, Florida is a quietly surreal show for anyone who has ever missed anyone or anything.

Combining bold story-telling with highly physical choreography, Rockbottom is a moving and incredibly honest self-portrait of personal struggle with depression and addiction. The themes are leavened with humour and warmth, skyrocketing between existential angst and irony, and give prominence to the roles of resilience and support networks within recovery.

Veering between reality and simulation, Celebration, Florida orbits around ideas of surrogacy; a stand-in to replace a person you miss, a re-creation of an experience you can’t stop thinking about, nostalgia for a place that never existed.

Rockbottom is not only a thought-provoking night-out it is a reflective tool for everyone concerned with mental well-being. Importantly, safe-guarding is centre stage with this project, with discussion and signposting available in the post-show discussion.

Greg will speak to you through two performers using pre-recorded audio and headphones. They will know almost nothing about the show when they walk on stage. ‘A moving tone poem on loss and retrieval’ ★★★★ The Stage ‘A work of great sensitivity written with enviable grace and poise’ After the Lights Fade

Vincent Dance Theatre

Van Huynh Company

SHUT DOWN

Đẹp

Directed by ‘one of the most important feminist artists working in Britain today’ (The Observer) SHUT DOWN explores the spectrum of modern day masculinity and investigates the pressures, contradictions and confusions of being a man.

Đẹp is the Vietnamese word for beautiful. With his latest dance work, the UK-based choreographer Dam Van Huynh explores influences from his Southeast Asian heritage. In Vietnamese culture, death is also a form of rebirth. The dancers in Đẹp are nude for a purpose. Fragile and vulnerable, their nudity literally strips them bare. The movement invites the audience to let go, reaching ever closer to the feeling of being alive. Winner of the Asian Arts Award for Best Directing 2018.

Vincent Dance Theatre’s first ever all male production is timely, humorous and highly charged ‘political and poetic dance theatre’ (London Dance), from one of the UK’s most risk-taking and rigorous choreographers. Dance, spoken word, rap and real-life testimony collide to ask: what is it like to live as a man today? ★★★★ - ‘Vincent identifies, with forensic precision, the way men react to changing times’ The Observer Adult supervision for under 14s is advised due to strong language and adult themes.

China Plate presents

Half of Me

The Shape of the Pain

Inspired by Satinder Kaur Chohan’s play by the same title, Half of Me is based on a modern day theme which shares often unheard stories of young people born through Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) and draws parallel to a similar storyline based on motherhood from famous Indian epic ‘Mahabharata’.

‘I don't have to remember being in pain. I'm not sure that's something we can do. And in my case, it's irrelevant. You can't remember something that's still happening’

The artistic idea of this work is grounded in the technique of Bharatanatyam, a classical South Asian dance form but has contemporary relevance in connecting with a diverse audience. This work has wider appeal and especially easy to reach a young dance audience, as well as families.

One woman attempts to articulate her experience of physical pain. Pain with no apparent cause. Also, she’s met someone, and they want to make this work. Words and an original sound score combine to create an explosive dialogue about love and perception. An experiment in how we talk about pain - and if we ever do that in a way someone else can understand. Developed by Rachel Bagshaw and Chris Thorpe. Written by Chris Thorpe. Directed by Rachel Bagshaw with an original score by Melanie Wilson. All performances are captioned, audio described & wheelchair accessible.

Daughters of the Revolution?

The Children’s Hour

A century ago in 1919, the nineteenth amendment to the US constitution was passed in the Senate declaring "the right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex”. Presidential ratification happened the following year, the final state to ratify was Mississippi in 1984.

Hellman understood that small-town America is America: her country…best seen under a microscope, not viewed through a telescope. How better to talk about paranoia, prejudice and power, than in the claustrophobic atmosphere of a girls’ school? Set the school in a small town where everybody knows everybody and some are related, and Hellman had the mix for a powerful drama”… The protagonists “are career-women: and that in itself comes to be held against them… It is worth remembering that America, the world’s democracy, had great difficulty with women who were independent of men, either economically or sexually. When the play was revived in 1952, Hellman was summoned before the committee for Un-American Activities. She avoided a gaol sentence, but was blacklisted as a writer, for her left-wing politics, but perhaps her sexual politics too” Jeanette Winterson

Here we present a season of drama by American women writers in the years immediately after this milestone. The Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression were times of great change in the societal role of women, variously reflected in three remarkable plays.

Play Ball

Stage Door

by Maurine Dallas Watkins

by Edna Ferber and George S. Kaufman

Inspired by crimes she covered for the Chicago Tribune, Watkins’ prohibition-era play became an instant hit and has been continuously reinterpreted for film and stage, notably as a musical, (it is retitled here for contractual reasons). Watkins, opens this comic drama with a brutal dramatization of the typical situation the women in articles, submitted to the Chicago Tribune as a court reporter and “sob sister”, experienced: vengeful Roxie Hart slays a lover for mistreating her…and then the fun begins. A run-of-the-mill murderess, until her vivid confession creates opportunity for profit, she begins a transformation to rival that of Eliza Dolittle.

Ferber and Kaufman’s ‘love letter’ to American Theatre follows a group of young women in a theatrical boarding house looking to make it in the “legitimate” theatre. Their dedication to that struggle speaks to the cry for emancipation, creativity and fulfilment made by American Suffragists a generation earlier. Despite the glittering oneliners and the Cinderella love story the play is rooted in the knowledge that the stage provided young women with a way out.

"Gee, this play's sure got our number, ain't it?" Belva Gaertner (the ‘real’ Velma Kelly).

Kaufman is remembered for his collaborations with Moss Hart Once in a Lifetime, Merrily We Roll Along, and The Man Who Came to Dinner. Ferber, in 1936, was the foremost female novelist of her generation, author of the original novels Showboat and Giant. “a rarely produced 1930s classic comedy providing a broadly insightful, satirical look into that legendary decade” DCTheatrescene

Op Art In Focus Edge Hill University is the sponsor of Tate Liverpool’s Op Art In Focus Exhibition. Op art – short for optical art – emerged in the 1960s. Its leading figures included Bridget Riley, Jesus Rafael Soto and Victor Vasarely. They combined lines, geometric shapes and eye popping colour to create artworks that fool the eye. Images could be subtle or disorientating, giving the illusion of movement. The display moves beyond the typical period of op art and includes works by more contemporary artists such as Angela Bulloch. Included is a rare installation of Jim Lambie’s Zobop which floods the entire gallery floor with psychedelic patterning.

Op art in Focus is a part of Tate Liverpool’s in Focus series – displays of the Tate collection dedicated to significant modern and contemporary artists or movements. Peterloo

The Children Act

Dir: Mike Leigh 154 mins

Dir: Richard Eyre 103 mins

British historical drama following the events which culminated in the Peterloo massacre at St. Peter's Field, Manchester in 1819. As the Napoleonic Wars reached an end, political unrest struck the nation as ongoing stretches of famine, unemployment and the introduction of the Corn Laws began to stir the working classes. A demonstration took place on 16th August led by Henry Hunt (Rory Kinnear) with the intention to challenge the government and propose parliamentary reform. Their hopes were soon diminished, however, when a cavalry charged into the massive crowd, causing the situation to turn deadly.

A high court judge must make a life-or-death decision on behalf of a child while struggling with her own problems in her personal life. Putting her marriage and own self-interests on the back burner, Fiona Maye (Emma Thompson) puts her time and energy into a high-profile case which sees a 17-year-old Jehovah's Witness refuse a life-saving blood transfusion due to his religious principles. With the boy's condition worsening by the day, it is up to Fiona to ultimately decide whether to overrule the parents' and child's decision and enforce the blood transfusion or to grant the family their wish and dismiss it.
