Post Post-Punk Graham Massey and Richard Witts in conversation

Graham Massey is the path-finding champion of Acid House and founder of 808 State. In this informal and wide-ranging talk he’ll consider the post-punk scene - and what has followed it - with Richard Witts, post-punk pioneer of The Passage, whose book of lyrics from the post-punk period is newly published by the poetry specialist Eyewear. Massey’s achievements include producing Björk (Army of Me, The Modern Things) and his latest project, a tribute to the jazz legend Sun Ra. He is considered by The Wire to be ‘chief arbiter of Techno cool’ with ‘a ‘restless, maverick imagination’. Witts’s group was defined by the post-punk press as bounded by ‘Steve Reich and The Sex Pistols’ (NME) and ‘a cross between early Joy Division and late Wire’ (Sounds).

Painting the New Town: Embodied Experience, Embodied Memory Talk by André Stitt

Artist André Stitt will talk about his artistic career which spans over 40 years and encompasses performance, installation and painting. He will focus on his most recent work, a body of paintings that draw inspiration from architecture, new towns and urban environments, 40 of which form Edge Hill’s current exhibition, CIVICS. Throughout the talk he will reflect on how his previous performance and installation work has influenced his painting practice. André Stitt’s exhibition CIVICS is on display throughout the main building at Edge Hill University until 26th April 2018.

Jazz in The Red Bar With The Phil Shotton Quartet

Phil Shotton and his quartet regularly perform alongside many national and international jazz artists and have appeared at major jazz festivals, venues and music festivals throughout the country and abroad. With a tenor sound reminiscent of Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster and Dexter Gordon, Phil is gaining the reputation of a highly sought-after soloist. The Quartet includes: Dr. Tom Sykes, Piano. Matt Lawton, Double Bass and, Jez Finch, Drums. For the evening The Red Bar will become a cabaret style jazz club and the quartet will entertain you by playing jazz standards from the 1930's onwards and popular songs from the American songbook - swing music at its best! During the second half of the performance, audience members can 'sit in' with the Quartet and experience playing with a professional group. If you are a vocalist or instrumentalist and would like to sit in with the band for a number or two during the second set, this can be arranged on the night.

Chinese New Year Celebration Rock Concert: Transition In celebration of Chinese New Year, Edge Hill University’s Confucius Institute invite you to a live rock style concert with a difference! Transition is a three-piece British rock band who write their own songs and sing in Mandarin - a fusion of eastern and western musical influence! Their roots are in Bristol, UK, but they combine this rock foundation with Asian rhythm and melody, producing music that inspires audiences from both sides of the globe. Their first mandarin song Sorry My Chinese Isn’t so Good became an instant you tube hit, gathering over a million views, and is now an anthem for all those learning Chinese! The band also wrote the official theme song for the Taiwanese Olympic team for the London 2012 Games - the first ever foreign band to be given this opportunity!

Philip Jeck and Jonathan Raisin: The Long Wave Best known for his crackling, rumbling, glowing turntable symphonies U.K. composer Philip Jeck has been creating sound with record-players since the early 80's. Jonathan Raisin is a composer and improvising musician based in Liverpool. Over a varied career he has performed in swimming pools, a piano shop, a forest and numerous falling down buildings as well as more traditional venues. For this event they will revisit their mesmerising debut collaboration, The Long Wave, a BBC commission first performed at the Music Room, Liverpool in 2017, and will present a new work specially created for The Arts Centre EHU.

They give you too much of a headache.’ So Many Reasons is a story about the unique influence our mothers have on how we understand the world, from the perspective of a first generation British Ghanaian woman. Exploring cultural and generational shifts in how women see themselves and each other, this sassy and soulful new show asks what happens when we realise mums don't always know best. Ofori’s previous show Portrait was a critical success, touring extensively, appearing at the Southbank Centre (Women of the World Festival, 2015) and broadcast on BBC.

Daisy Johnson: Short Stories in Liminal Landscapes Edge Hill is delighted to be welcoming Daisy Johnson, one of the finest, upcoming young writers in the country, to give a reading from her weird and wonderful short story collection Fen. This book, which explores animal worlds and liminal spaces, was published in 2016 by Jonathan Cape in the UK and in the US by Graywolf. Her novel, Everything Under (Cape), is due in 2018. Daisy was the winner of the AM Heath Prize, the Harper’s Bazaar short story prize, and was longlisted for the Sunday Times Short Story Prize. She was also the winner of the 2017 Edge Hill Short Story Prize. She will be reading from Fen, discussing her writing and discussing the short story form.

Sally E. Dean: Something’s in the Living Room Devised and performed by Sally E. Dean, Something’s in the Living Room is a darkly humorous one-woman physical theatre show that traverses loss, redemption and the ridiculous. Poetic, absurdist, and surreal scenes emerge through an intimate and transformative journey with a creature-like garment of bin bags. Staged as fragmented memories, a woman searches in an empty room for all people and things forgotten, including potatoes and vacuum cleaners. Interweaving personal fact with fiction, we are taken to the edges of human fragility as the unstable world of daily life objects and rituals question: what do you want to do with your one, precious, life? Audiences are invited into the journey through wearing heart-protectors filled with collective personal memories, and other surprises.

Mxoli Norman: Volume Please! Volume Please! is a personal account of untold history. A portrait of a confused son and a dying father, told through the lens of South African social history and black South African identities. Lee Tsang: conductor Steven Wilkie: concertmaster Sinfonia UK Collective is proud to celebrate a new partnership with Edge Hill University. Our performance of Tchaikovsky's orchestral masterpiece will be led by professional musicians from Sinfonia UK Collective, and will feature talented young performers from across West Lancashire, Merseyside and the surrounding region. Pupils, students and members of the community, working towards the performance over just a single day, will gain experience of a large orchestra and will receive expert instruction and leadership. In addition to Tchaikovsky's music, audiences will enjoy a brief introduction to the art of orchestral conducting and an opportunity to discuss aspects of Sinfonia UK Collective's work. Launch of The Oxford Handbook of Dance and Wellbeing In recent years, a growth in dance and wellbeing scholarship has resulted in new ways of thinking that place the body, movement, and dance in a central place with renewed significance for wellbeing. The new Oxford Handbook of Dance and Wellbeing, edited by Vicky Karkou, Sue Oliver, and Sophia Lycouris is a large text book of 1000 pages with over 90 contributors from around the world. It examines dance and related movement practices from the perspectives of neuroscience and health, community and education, and psychology and sociology. In this day-long book launch, colleagues from the UK, Germany, Austria, Italy, US and Argentina will present their contributions, discuss their perspectives and encourage participants to engage with the topic through performances and workshops. Numbered Days is an award-winning play that follows Rebecca and Charlotte as they fall in love five-thousand miles apart. Rebecca and Charlotte, met by chance online. As their relationship develops from platonic to romantic, they finally decide to meet in person but with life and university schedules getting in the way, that wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t happen for another five months. Without any knowledge of what the future may hold, Rebecca and Charlotte book a flight and agree to make it work. Soon the pressure of their situation leaves Rebecca and Charlotte questioning whether they can hold on for those five months, and if they do, what happens when they inevitably separate again? Professor of Modern and Contemporary Poetry at Manchester Metropolitan University, Antony's work has been compared with poets as disparate as John Ashbery and Ezra Pound. Jeffrey Wainwright has described his poetry as "significant and powerful", and nowhere is this more apparent than in M, an ode to Manchester in the present moment and to the world it finds itself in, awash with the movement of peoples, cultures, politics and words. Join us for the launch of his third collection M. M ('Manchester') tackles the contemporary themes of terrorism, industrial decline, and Icelandic violence. This collection also includes the poems that received the Manchester Poetry Prize in 2012. This event will also include readings by Valzhyna Mort and Zaynab Allak.

Alan Bissett: The Moira Monologues & (MORE) Moira Monologues Alan Bissett is an acclaimed playwright, novelist and performer from Falkirk in Scotland. He was the winner of the Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Writer of the Year in 2011 and his novels Death of a Ladies' Man and Pack Men were both shortlisted for Scottish Arts Council Fiction of the Year Prizes. His plays Turbo Folk and Ban This Filth! were shortlisted for a Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland and Amnesty International Freedom of Expression Awards respectively, and the short film he wrote and narrated, The Shutdown, won numerous prizes at international festivals. In 2016 he was given an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Stirling for his outstanding contribution to Scottish culture. For the first time ever in England, Alan Bissett presents a double-bill of his rip-roaring 'one woman shows' The Moira Monologues and its sequel (More) Moira Monologues, winner of a prestigious Fringe First award at Edinburgh in 2017. Alan plays Moira Bell, cleaner, single mum, the hardest woman in Falkirk and 'the most charismatic character to appear on a Scottish stage in a decade' (The Scotsman). The Troth / Usne Kaha Tha “The memory becomes luminous just before death…” Akademi’s new physical dance work tells a gripping wartime story of love and loss. Marking the centenary of World War I, choreographer Gary Clarke unfolds the poignant narrative through dance, music and silent film. The Troth is a powerful live theatre production inspired by a classic Hindi short story, Usne Kaha Tha. As the action moves from rural India to the trenches of Belgium, we learn of the secret promise made by one soldier, Lehna Singh, as he makes the ultimate sacrifice to save another. The Art of the Modern Big Band Following on from their highly successful show The Big Band Story Edge Hill's very own big band present of programme of more contemporary big band music. This is sure to be an explosive performance with music from big band leaders such as: Gordon Goodwin, Bob Florence, Maynard Ferguson and Buddy Rich. The band will be complimented with their vocalists, Corrine Andrew and Molly Birch, adding a touch of style and sophistication to the proceedings! Musical Director Phil Shotton will take the audience on an exciting journey of interesting and sometimes lesser heard big band repertoire, showing just what is capable with the modern day big band.

The Dog Beneath the Skin by W. H. Auden & Christopher Isherwood

Man is changed by his living: but not fast enough. His concern today is for that which yesterday did not occur. Born of a contempt for the popular stage of the time Auden & Isherwood’s satire on fascism (amongst many other things) is an almost exact contemporary of Chaplin’s The Great Dictator. Part-polemic partrevue part something else entirely, strange as the play is, it is, as a contemporary critic observed extremely entertaining “often genuinely eloquent and seldom freakish” The Times.

The Other Animals by Ewan MacColl

McColl, of Dirty Old Town fame, is best known as the controversial sometime leader of the folk revival: “a fearless, galvanic character whose influence is still causing ripples” The Guardian. Here is a rare chance to see his a fine example of his writing for the stage, notably produced with his then partner Joan Littlewood. A political prisoner is asked to renounce his political ideals, in a series of scenes which are both harrowing and poetic. As relevant today, in the post-Mandela era, as they were in the days of Hitler's concentration camps and Stalin's gulag: The Other Animals are us.

Solo exhibition of the work of André Stitt

CIVICS brings together a significant number of works by renowned visual and performance artist André Stitt. Responding to the legacy of Britain's New Towns and post-war brutalist architecture, the paintings in this large-scale exhibition draw upon the materiality of the built environment and its abstract displacement through art as a memory of forms reimagined as a parallel universe. The exhibition will include work made during 2016 and 2017, based on several research trips to the nearby new town of Skelmersdale. André Stitt will be talking about his work at The Arts Centre on Friday 25th January at 1pm.

Mary Reid Kelley and Patrick Kelley: We Are Ghosts Tate Liverpool Edge Hill University is the sponsor of Tate Liverpool’s current exhibition by New York artists, Mary Reid Kelley and Patrick Kelley We Are Ghosts (November 17 – 18 March 2018), the artists’ first solo museum exhibition in the UK. We Are Ghosts is a new and imaginative commission which re-imagines life on a US Navy Submarine at the end of the Second World War. Known for their stylised black-and-white videos, this exhibition features their new work n The Body of The Sturgeon, as well as the 2016 work, This Is Offal. The exhibition’s curator, Lauren Barnes, will discuss their work with ICE’s Associate Director, Professor Roger Shannon, on 31st January 2018. 55th Ann Arbor Film Festival Tour The Ann Arbor Film Festival is America’s longest-running independent film festival and as a pioneer of the film festival touring concept, has been presenting an annual tour of selected work from the festival since 1964. Over the years, the touring programme has brought the work of film and media artists to audiences throughout the world. Featuring filmmakers from around the globe, this programme of six new experimental, animated, documentary and narrative shorts includes Jessica Kingdom’s Commodity City and Jonathan Rattner’s The Interior, winner of the Michael Moore Award for Best Documentary Film. The Arts Centre at Edge Hill University is the only UK host, and is proud to be hosting the Tour for the sixth year running.
