Post Post-Punk Graham Massey and Richard Witts in conversation

Graham Massey is the path-finding champion of Acid House and founder of 808 State. In this informal and wide-ranging talk he’ll consider the post-punk scene - and what has followed it - with Richard Witts, post-punk pioneer of The Passage, whose book of lyrics from the post-punk period is newly published by the poetry specialist Eyewear. Massey’s achievements include producing Björk (Army of Me, The Modern Things) and his latest project, a tribute to the jazz legend Sun Ra. He is considered by The Wire to be ‘chief arbiter of Techno cool’ with ‘a ‘restless, maverick imagination’. Witts’s group was defined by the post-punk press as bounded by ‘Steve Reich and The Sex Pistols’ (NME) and ‘a cross between early Joy Division and late Wire’ (Sounds).

Rites, the first major piece of work made by the company in 2007, is a male duet about growing up on the journey from boyhood to manhood. Imprint, a new trio by Kevin Edward Turner, is unashamedly about love, romance and relationships; and Anthony Missen’s new solo, Trip, takes you into the dark arena of selfdeception, exploring the line between true and false identity. An Island Expressionism Tickets £9/5/3 See a second and third play for half-price when all booked together It is often thought that the European Expressionist Movement, which reached its apotheosis in the 1920s and 30s, had little impact on the theatre in this country. Here we attempt to disprove the critics with a bold selection of work characterised by their fluid use of poetry and song, startling imagery and epic communitarian spirit.

Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas

Twenty-four hours in the life of a small Welsh seaside town: this great play needs no introduction. “It is all about religion, sex and death,” said Richard Burton, adding, “it is a comic masterpiece.” But it is the love of men and women, as Thomas said “with all their crudities, doubts, and confusions” that propels the play. We are not wholly bad or good Who live our lives under Milk Wood "Dylan Thomas's beautiful, bawdy, affectionate, reckless, and deeply original play was justly crowned at its first performance by a storm of cheers" Sunday Times

The Dog Beneath the Skin by W. H. Auden & Christopher Isherwood

Man is changed by his living: but not fast enough. His concern today is for that which yesterday did not occur. Born of a contempt for the popular stage of the time Auden & Isherwood’s satire on fascism (amongst many other things) is an almost exact contemporary of Chaplin’s The Great Dictator. Part-polemic partrevue part something else entirely, strange as the play is, it is, as a contemporary critic observed extremely entertaining “often genuinely eloquent and seldom freakish” The Times.

The Other Animals by Ewan MacColl

McColl, of Dirty Old Town fame, is best known as the controversial sometime leader of the folk revival: “a fearless, galvanic character whose influence is still causing ripples” The Guardian. Here is a rare chance to see his a fine example of his writing for the stage, notably produced with his then partner Joan Littlewood. A political prisoner is asked to renounce his political ideals, in a series of scenes which are both harrowing and poetic. As relevant today, in the post-Mandela era, as they were in the days of Hitler's concentration camps and Stalin's gulag: The Other Animals are us.

The exhibition will include work made during 2016 and 2017, based on several research trips to the nearby new town of Skelmersdale. André Stitt will be talking about his work at The Arts Centre on Friday 25th January at 1pm.
