We are delighted to invite you to the eleventh annual Teachers and Careers Advisers Conference. This free, one day event organised by the Student Recruitment Team at Edge Hill University, will update you on the changing HE landscape and will give you the opportunity to share experiences and good practice with colleagues who provide post-16 information, advice and guidance (IAG) across a broad range of school and college settings.
The conference is aimed at all Teachers and Careers Advisers working in post-16 education. Professionals and practitioners in the HE sector will be available through plenary and workshop sessions to equip you with up-to-date, essential information to inform your own practice. a) Examining the routes into working in Education: the developing landscape and the opportunities this offers This session will discuss the many ways in which your students could potentially work in the field of Education and build a career path towards this. It will include consideration of the routes into Initial Teacher Training at all levels, the range of new employment opportunities emerging in working with children and young people in this field and offer advice on the choices your students can make if they are considering a future in education or teaching. b) Working with looked after children and care leavers This session will address the definition of a ‘looked after child’ and the challenges that these children face within and outside of the educational environment. The session will also identify the ways in which these students are supported during their education, both at school and university level and will offer guidance as to the help that you can access in order to support your ‘looked after’ students. c) UCAS update: Applications, sector changes and adviser resources This session will provide a brief overview of key trends and changes in the current progression to HE picture and will discuss the essential elements required for successful UCAS applications. You will also be updated on fundamental messages about UCAS future developments and provided with new resources which can be used to support advisers and your students alike. d) Routes into Health and Social Care This session discusses our diverse portfolio of Applied Health and Social Care programmes before introducing degrees in Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work. Delivery of our BSc Operating Department Practice and BSc Paramedic Practice at both Ormskirk and St James’ Manchester will also be outlined. The session will conclude by providing a broad overview of careers and professional pathways in the expanding and evolving health and social care sector. f) What Admissions Tutors are looking for; hints and tips on Personal Statements and References Delivered by the Education Liaison Team using advice and feedback from Edge Hill University Admissions Tutors and sector experts, this session will provide an insight into what makes an application stand out. You will see real life examples of extracts from applications and will discuss what you think makes a good application. There will also be the opportunity to put your questions to our panel of admissions tutors At the end of the session you will have practical tips to share with your students about the structure and content of their Personal Statement, and with your colleagues about how the Reference they supply will be considered and used. 3.15pm
