Laid Bare Theatre Project presents:
The Value of Nothing By Kim Wiltshire, Directed by Joyce Branagh
Welcome. Come on in. Take part in the project launch of ArtWorks, the new back to work initiative championed by your friend and ours, the fantastic Vince Fine! And so begins the press conference. More like an event than a play, this Laid Bare show invites the audience to interact, be active and take part. In the world of The Value of Nothing, we are at the press conference from hell, witnessing the case of Vince Fine, an ambitious man, who seems to know the price of everything, but the value of nothing. As his world crashes in around him, the audience witness whether or not he can make the right choice – whether or not, in the end, he does know what to value. As Vince champions his government ‘back to work’ initiative ArtWorks, the audience is invited to get involved with the lives of the characters. Multimedia elements and music create the setting, punctuated with human stories from young people about their real-life experiences of living on benefits in the UK today. “This is where the real, human, down and dirty art is made. By us.”

Jim Burrows and Frances Kay present a double bill of new and furious performance.
FK vs. KT and STRANGE LOOP In FK vs. KT Frances Kay explores the sense of self, and the ways through which creative identity can be torn apart by pride and political opinion. Over 40 minutes, this neo-drag autobiographical work explores how personalities can be skewed by patriotism, affected by loyalty and destroyed by fanaticism. Brexit (n.): an issue that is tearing us apart (literally). An exploration of what could be lost, and what could be gained. STRANGE LOOP is a psychoanalyst’s wet-dream. It’s a postmodern p*ss-take. It’s a closed circuit, baby. We find ourselves lost in a dark, mythopoetic labyrinth; a twisted warren of pop-culture reference; a kaleidoscopic cavern of queerness and the uncanny. This interdisciplinary work loops ceaselessly through spoken word, lip-sync, 80’s synthwave, Expressionist horror, and other… Stranger Things. Join Burrows and Kay for an evening of experimental new performances bound together in a queering of the contemporary moment. Supported by R&D at Edge Hill University and The University of Huddersfield. Performances contain graphic content and nudity.

Declining Solo A woman returns to visit her family home, and misses the one thing she values most: the father she remembers. It’s in a place where there’s singing and dancing and eating and drinking and being merry, and of friendships and familial link as the total core of communities. It’s in a place where we still have mountains unadorned. Where the summer smells of sun and the winter smells of burning coal. It’s about a heyday, the heyday of a man. It’s about ageing… about fading. I think if I piece it back together somehow If the vase has been broken and I put back the pieces, it can get better… Combining text with choreography, video and specially commissioned music, Declining Solo is the sequel to Two Destination Language’s award-winning Near Gone.

Russian Revolution Centenary: Music and Film at a time of Revolution On Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th November, Edge Hill University will host several events to mark the centenary of the Bolshevik Revolution, a conflict that shook the world on 6th and 7th November 1917 (or October 24th / 25th on the Julian calendar). The world’s first Marxist uprising, which in many ways grew out of the horrific consequences of the First World War, caused political reverberations the world over, many of which we are still living with to this day. Our events will have the twin focus of Film and Music. We will be delighted to have Edouard Artemiev in our company during these dates. Artemiev is a Russian electronic music pioneer, who celebrates his 80th birthday in November and who was the composer on many of Andrei Tarkovsky’s most memorable films. We will also have the Russian composer Yuri Kasparov – Professor of Composition at the Moscow Conservatoire and who was awarded ‘Honored Art Worker of Russia’ by order of the Russian President in 2007 and ‘Chevalier dans L’order des Arts et des Lettres’ by the Minister of Culture of France in 2008. Kasparov’s extensive compositional output, from chamber through to symphonic works, also includes many film scores. During both days, 10.00am-4.00pm, there will a symposium to examine the many fascinating facets of film and music in post-Revolutionary Russia - Music and Film at a time of Revolution – and members of the public will be warmly welcomed to its proceedings. Programme Wednesday 8th November: - 9.30am – 12.00pm Revolution through Music and Film Symposium 1 - 12.30pm – 2.00pm lunchtime screening of Eisenstein’s Battleship Potemkin - 2.30pm – 4.30pm Revolution through Music and Film Symposium 1 Thursday 9th November - 9.30am – 12.00pm Revolution through Music and Film Symposium 2 - 12.30pm – 3.30pm lunchtime screening of Tarkovsky’s Solaris (score by Artemyev) - 3.30pm – 4.30pm public roundtable discussion with Russian composers Eduard Artemyev (Russian pioneer of electronic music and long-time collaborator with Tarkovsky) and Yuri Kasparov - 5.00pm – 6.45pm screening of Tarkovsky’s The Mirror (score by Artemyev) - 7.30pm – 9.30pm concert of contemporary Russian Music including chamber works of Yuri Kasparov and electronic works by Edward Artemyev, as well as others from Russia of the last 100 years i.e. Gubaidulina, Ustvolskaya, Denisov

On this evening we will remember all of those that lost their lives in this monstrous human catastrophe, irrespective of nationality. Songs from both sides of the lines – a period Voice and Piano recital split between early 20th Century British Songs (Butterworth/Gurney) and German Kabaret. Pornography by Simon Stephens
Sartre defines obscenity as the inertia of the flesh. Here nameless characters offer a kaleidoscopic London that moved in a few days from the Olympics announcement to the horror of terrorist bombing. Inspired by the events of 7/7, Pornography offers, through seven different seemingly unrelated stories, a complex paean to the human. “Stephens observes his characters with an almost forensic detachment and yet he makes us love them too….This is a play of grace and terror.” The Guardian. “Thrilling, compelling and visceral, Pornography is a superb depiction of a city on fire and under attack” The Stage.

London Road book & lyrics by Alecky Blythe music & lyrics by Adam Cork
Not a book but a document in radical form; a piece of social history; the alternative to the tabloid version: a "verbatim" musical drama based on the exact words of Ipswich people in interviews conducted in the run-up to the arrest and conviction of Steve Wright, the serial killer who murdered six women. London Road focuses on the community rather than the crime, written in verbatim style, the spoken text is reproduced by the performers exactly as recorded in the interviews. The events are not depicted, rather this is an ensemble portrait of a community coming together. The Independent described London Road as “a bold and imaginative tale of triumph over evil.” “A deeply inventive, bold, life-affirming musical” Time Out.

Gulliver’s Marvels
The sequel that was never written. Climb aboard ship in the company of the world’s most celebrated adventurer, Lemuel Gulliver Esq. Behold wonders so curious and exotic, so far beyond the realms of human imagination, you’ll scarcely be able to believe your own senses. Here be colossal women, miniscule men, cogitating monsters, and multifarious marvels to make your hair stand up and your eyes pop out. Our manic melange of physical storytelling, music and circus, Gulliver’s Marvels will take you to the edge of reason and, with luck, bring you back again. Will you be any the wiser? Will you, unlike poor old Gulliver, be able to tell truth from fiction? Probably not. But we won’t let the facts get in the way of a good time.

Solo exhibition of the work of André Stitt
CIVICS brings together a significant number of works by renowned visual and performance artist André Stitt. Responding to the legacy of Britain's New Towns and post-war brutalist architecture, the paintings in this large-scale exhibition draw upon the materiality of the built environment and its abstract displacement through art as a memory of forms reimagined as a parallel universe. The exhibition will include work made during 2016 and 2017, based on several research trips to the nearby new town of Skelmersdale.

Titus Andronicus Cert: 15 The decay of Rome reaches violent depths in Shakespeare’s most bloody play. Titus is a ruler exhausted by war and loss, who relinquishes power but leaves Rome in disorder. Rape, cannibalism and severed body parts fill the moral void at the heart of this corrupt society. Shakespeare’s gory revenge tragedy presents us with murder as entertainment, and, as the body count piles up, poses questions about the nature of sexuality, family, class and society. Blanche McIntyre returns to the RSC to direct Shakespeare’s brutal revenge tragedy after her debut directing The Two Noble Kinsmen (2016).
