Students’ Union Everything we do at Edge Hill Students’ Union is shaped by our students, and you will automatically become a member when you enrol at the University. Our mission is to ensure Edge Hill voices are heard, valued and acted upon, and our vision is to create the best student experience we can. To achieve this, we seek out your ideas, thoughts, and feedback, and develop campaigns to highlight the issues important to our students, creating positive outcomes. Every year our students elect a team of Sabbatical Officers to represent the student voice on University committees and boards, and to run campaigns and events, supported by professional staff and part-time elected officers. Over the past few years, Edge Hill Students’ Union has grown rapidly, and offers some crucial services for Edge Hill Students.

Advice and Representation Our Advice Centre offers support and guidance in areas such as academic issues, welfare benefits, housing, money and debt. We are independent from the University and our advice is impartial, confidential and free to students. Our GIVE IT A GO! booklet, issued termly, lists all the things happening around campus, from Crafternoons and breakfast raves, to vintage clothing sales and Bongo’s Bingo as well as talks, workshops and personal development courses. We host weekly events in the SU Bar and VENUE, our nightclub. The SU Bar serves fresh food cooked to order and we also run a takeaway service and SUBWAY™ is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Official Edge Hill merchandise and clothing can be bought in the SU Shop, along with your NUS Totum card featuring local and national discounts. Edge Hill is home to a thriving, dynamic research culture and offers a wide range of full-time and part-time research degrees.

75

Research Degrees

The University performed strongly in the national Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014, with all subject areas featuring ‘internationally excellent’ or ‘world-leading’ research and research funding subsequently increasing. Staff in all subject areas across the University are engaged in research and there are a number of research institutes which bring together staff from different departments, alongside visiting professors and professionals from external organisations. This range of expertise ensures that research degrees can be pursued in the majority of subjects offered by Edge Hill University. Edge Hill University offers 2 routes to a research degree for international students: Masters by Research (MRes) – full-time 1 year; part-time 1.5 years Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) – full-time 3 - 4 years; part-time 4.5 - 6 years. Part-time PhD applications must be approved by the PVC Research prior to interview. Your time will be primarily spent conducting research. You will acquire the knowledge and skills to help you design and conduct your research project, evaluate the research, and disseminate your results. In doing so, you will develop a range of transferable skills which can help you with further research within or outside academia, including critical thinking, project management, time management and presentation.

i

ehu.ac.uk/GraduateSchool

Before applying, you should discuss your proposed research with the relevant research area by contacting the Graduate School in the first instance on: GraduateSchool@edgehill.ac.uk.

Important Information for Prospective Students Disclaimer We make every effort to ensure the accuracy of our published course information. However, our programmes and courses are subject to ongoing review and development. Changing circumstances may mean we have to alter or cancel programmes or courses. Changes may be necessary to comply with the requirements of professional, regulatory, statutory or accrediting bodies; changes to subject benchmark statements; to keep courses contemporary through updating practices or areas of study; or as a result of feedback from students. We reserve the right to make variations if we consider such action to be necessary or in the best interests of students. You can access the latest information on courses and programmes on our website ehu.ac.uk/undergraduate or ehu.ac.uk/postgraduate

What are my rights and responsibilities under the contract? There is a legal phrase to describe the rights and responsibilities which come from the contract between us: terms and conditions. It is essential that you read the terms and conditions of your contract so that you know exactly what you are agreeing to. In the contract you are agreeing to comply with University Regulations, Rules, Codes, Conditions, Policies and Procedures. We have grouped together all these documents and put them in one place at edgehill.ac.uk/studentterms. We strongly advise you to take time to read through these pages and documents as well as seeing them as a source of reference during your studies.

Legal Relationship

Equal Opportunities

If your application is successful we will write to you to formally offer you a place. We refer to this as your ‘offer letter’. This is the beginning of the process leading to the start of the contract between you and the University. In the offer letter we will tell you about information which will help you decide whether to accept our offer including: - Any conditions you must meet for your place to be confirmed; - Any action you need to take; - Any deadlines you must meet; and - The terms and conditions which will apply if you accept our offer.

Edge Hill University is committed to, and actively promotes, equal opportunities in every respect. Details of the University’s Equality Scheme can be found at: edgehill.ac.uk/policies

If you decide to accept our offer as firm, then you are entering into a legal contract with the University. You are agreeing to be bound by the contract although some of it will not start to affect you until you begin your course. At enrolment we will remind you of the contract you have entered into with the University and we will ask you to sign a declaration confirming you understand the legal nature of our relationship.

Data Protection Edge Hill University holds personal data on all applicants and enrolled students in computer-based administrative systems. Personal data is held and processed in accordance with the Data Protection Act and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). We set out how we handle your data and information about data sharing in our Student Data Collection Notice.
