THE ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP ach year Edge Hill graduates help current students to realise their ambitions by contributing to the Alumni Fund, which supports two initiatives designed to make a lasting difference to students’ lives, the Alumni Scholarship programme and the University’s Hardship Fund. This year, the Preparation for Higher Education Scholarship will be sponsored by the Alumni Fund.

By sponsoring the Preparation for Higher Education Scholarship the Alumni Fund is recognising students who have demonstrated determination and commitment to their studies and who have displayed promise in the face of adversity.

Money raised by alumni also supports Edge Hill’s Hardship Fund which provides emergency assistance to students in severe financial difficulties and can make the difference between a student continuing their education or being forced to drop out due to their circumstances. It can also give disadvantaged students the initial boost they need to start their academic career.

We would like to thank former students for remaining part of Edge Hill University and investing in the future of our students. If you would like to contribute to the Alumni Fund, donate online at edgehill.ac.uk/alumni/alumni-fund.

PREPARATION FOR HE SCHOLARSHIP STUDENTS

F

astrack is an intensive seven week programme for adults. It is designed to give students who may have missed out on educational opportunities earlier in life, often because of challenging personal circumstances, the skills and knowledge to prepare them for entry to an Edge Hill Degree course.

Successful completion of the programme enables students to undertake a full or part-time degree course for the following September in their chosen subject. We are delighted to award these students their Preparation for HE Scholarships for Special Achievement during their studies whilst on a Fastrack 2017 course.

CHANCELLOR’S SCHOLARSHIPS Established in 2009 to mark the installation of Edge Hill’s first Chancellor, the Chancellor’s Scholarship rewards students who have helped raise the profile of the University and made an outstanding contribution to the University, particularly in the areas of race, disability, gender, sexuality, religion, anti-poverty, anti-ageism or any form of anti-discrimination. Students are nominated by their peers or members of Edge Hill staff, and winners are selected by a Panel which includes the Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor.

SHANA BOYD

BSc (Hons) Psychology

DANIEL CHAPMAN

BA (Hons) Social Work

BENJAMIN LAYTON

hana was nominated for the Chancellor’s Scholarship in recognition of her passion, drive and determination to make a positive difference to mental health services in her local community.

nlike many students, Daniel didn’t spend his 18th birthday money on holidays or driving lessons. Instead he used it to travel to Calais to work as a volunteer, distributing aid in the nowdismantled ‘Jungle’ refugee camp. He returned a further three times to support refugees and continues to campaign to raise money and awareness of the need for ongoing help for refugees in Calais.

n his role as a volunteer Leader for 1st Ormskirk Scouts, Ben is an enthusiastic ambassador for Edge hill University, and works hard to make the University campus feel like an extension of the Scout hut for the 30 children in his unit.

S

As a volunteer for Sefton Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), she shares her own experiences of transitioning from CAMHS to adult mental health services to help improve the process for other young people. At only 19 years old, Shana began delivering sessions to healthcare professionals and one of her suggestions, that each client should have a dedicated transition worker to support them during the transition process, led to the creation of a transition worker post in Sefton.

While at Edge Hill, Shana has volunteered with Tackling the Blues, a sports-based programme for young people with, or at risk of, mental health issues, run by Everton in the Community. Through her connections with Sefton CAMHS, she brought the two organisations together to discuss how they can collaborate to improve access to mental health services for young people. Shana does all of this while studying full-time for her degree and being a parent, demonstrating her tireless commitment to changing lives.

U

Described as “a credit to the University”, Daniel has used his experiences not only to inspire other students to get involved in volunteering in Calais, but to enhance his cohort’s understanding of child welfare issues. In a presentation to the class he was able to give a first-hand international dimension to child safeguarding through his own experience with displaced child migrants. Over the summer, he travelled to Greece to help at refugee camps there, and will again be sharing his experiences with staff and students.

Recently, Daniel presented to the international Joint Social Work Education & Research Conference (JSWEC) about how students can raise issues of social justice and the need to protect the human rights of individuals experiencing hardship and oppression.

Ben has established close links with the University and has organised numerous activities for the Scouts on campus to raise awareness of Edge Hill and the opportunities available through higher education. These have included a card making event in Creative Edge and a Jamboree on the Internet event in the Tech Hub, which Ben is now planning to extend to the 1,800 Scouts in the District.

Ben encourages a culture of inclusion and tolerance among the Scouts and builds diversity and equality into his activities wherever possible. As well as running sessions on different faiths, he has also created activities around bullying and disability. Ben dedicates many hours to 1st Ormskirk Scouts, not only planning and leading his unit but also mentoring other volunteers and encouraging more students to volunteer with the Scouts.

CHARLOTTE SEAL

JOSHUA STYLES

harlotte has significantly raised the profile of netball at Edge Hill University through her roles as a volunteer University Netball Officer and Sports Activator.

oshua works tirelessly to promote conservation, both at Edge Hill and in the wider community. In 2016, he discovered rare Dune Helleborine orchids growing on campus and organised for them to be protected from damage. He also volunteers for various conservation organisations including the World Wildlife Trust, Lancashire Wildlife Trust and Cheshire Wildlife Trust.

Charlotte took the lead in delivering and promoting Campus Sport’s weekly recreational Netball Now sessions for students, staff and the community to help them get back into netball, a sport they may not have considered since school. To date she has engaged with more than 200 people through social media and at Edge Hill welcome events, and regularly goes the extra mile in her role by arranging activities for the participants outside her weekly sessions. Recently, she put together a team of students to take part in SHOTS, a nationally recognised tournament organised by England Netball for students who don’t compete in the BUCS leagues – the first time Edge Hill has taken part in the competition.

As Sports Activator, Charlotte also has responsibility for the Women Active programme and has helped to double Campus Sport’s engagement with female participants and raise the malefemale ratio for participation in recreational sport from 35% to 50%.

ANNA SHARP

S

eeing an opportunity to further raise the University’s profile of Edge Hill on social media, Anna proactively set about sharing her love of Edge Hill and her positive student experience.

She approached The Tab Liverpool, and online youth news site, and was invited to write an article. The piece, Why Edge Hill is actually the best university in Liverpool, received more than 19,000 views and 3,000 shares on social media and Anna has been asked to write more light-hearted articles promoting Edge Hill for the site. As a result, she was asked to write an article for Degree, the University magazine for current and prospective students, and ended up being the cover star of the latest edition.

Anna also contributes to the life of the University as a student representative for her course and as secretary for the Christian Union, where she organises events which are welcoming, inclusive and safe for students from all backgrounds.

He is now working to establish Edge Hill’s meadowlands as the new location of these plants, which will ensure their survival and enhance the University’s reputation for biodiversity. Joshua was also recognised by the Botanical Society of Great Britain for his voluntary recording of species in sites of conservation importance, and awarded a Level 5 which is reserved for very experienced and skilled botanists.

While at Edge Hill, Joshua showed his compassion to others by helping several students with their dissertation research and in his spare time assisting a PhD student with plant identification.

hiannon Evans was Pro Vice-Chancellor of Edge Hill University from 1994 to 2008. Her lifelong love of poetry inspired her to found this award on her retirement to celebrate and reward aspiring poets who show considerable talent and the potential to develop their work further.

BRONTE PLEASANTS

BA (Hons) Creative Writing Bronte’s poetry attempts to capture the personal within the landscape, exploring themes such as grief and loss through stories of familiar and significant places in her life. She is passionate about experimenting with images and is interested in how personal emotions affect the landscape, using micro images to tell the wider story on the macro landscape. Some of Bronte’s landscape poetry has been published in Mothmaw, an anthology that she also edited.

She is extremely enthusiastic about taking part in projects alongside her studies that add to both her writing and editorial experience. Over the last year Bronte has been project leader and poetry editor for the first issue of political magazine Pork Barrel, editorial assistant on the acclaimed international poetry magazine The Wolf, and Vice President of the Edge Hill Writers and Poetics Society.

Bronte is currently working on a collection of collage poetry, creating predominantly feminist cut-out poems, using materials from popular fashion magazines and transforming their messages, enabling her to experiment with visual image and how it can manipulate or enhance written imagery.

THE MARK FLINN AWARD

F

ormer Pro-Vice-Chancellor Mark Flinn was instrumental in the transformation of Edge Hill from a higher education college to the successful university it is today.

He founded this Award to benefit students who share his love of history and who want to develop their skills by undertaking a research project that makes extensive use of historical evidence.

HANNAH JACKSON BA (Hons) History

Hannah’s research project focuses on nineteenth century attitudes to Chinese immigrants to Britain. Using archives in Liverpool and London, she will explore the origins and development of the stereotypical image of the ‘Chinaman’ in popular culture.

Hannah was selected for the Mark Flinn Award for the original nature of her proposal and its potential to fill a gap in research around Chinese settlement in the West. There is little existing literature specifically around nineteenth attitudes to the Chinese, and even less concerning British experience, making Hannah’s contribution all the more significant. The Award will help Hannah to fund research trips to London and archive fees.

With a love of history that goes back to childhood, Hannah is now considering a career in teaching so that she can share her fascination with how the world has changed and developed with others.
