To meet Kadayawan demand, city needs to outsource durian from other provinces due to limited supply By MAYA M. PADILLO

K

adayawan, the feast of abundance, is experiencing a shortage. The Davao City government noted a shortage of durian fruit and is now looking at sourcing out from neighboring provinces to meet the expected high demand during Kadayawan. That’s the task of the City Agriculturist’s Office (CAGRO) to ensure ample supply of the heralded King of Fruits. CAGRO head Edgardo Haspe said to respond to the high demand for the fruit during the Kadayawan season, the CAGRO is currently in talks with durian

consolidators from other regions to import durian into the city. “Isa sa gina-tan-aw kay ang other areas like Kidapawan, Makilala, and other parts of Davao Region na naay durian para naa tay ma-supply for the month-long display of durian,” Haspe said during

this week’s I-Speak media forum. Haspe explained that the annual volume of durian that Davao City produces can reach over 12,000 metric tons (MT). In fact, Davao City recorded 15,485 MT of durian in 2019, over 17,000 MT in 2020, and 12,930 MT in 2021. However, only over 3,000 MT of durian were harvested for the first half of this year. Haspe attributed the supply deficit to the unusual weather patterns caused by climate change. “Right now, ang climate nato wala nag-cooperate.

In previous years like in 2020, we have abundant harvest during Kadayawan but we did not have faceto-face celebrations due to the pandemic, but now we have a face-to-face celebration but sad to say we don’t have enough harvest. We still have banana, mango but usually durian man ang gina-anhi sa mga tourists sa Davao City,” he said. He also said available durian today is a bit pricey. Haspe said, although there is still durian left to be harvested from the city’s highlands, this will still not be enough to supply the

Apo Agua made the decision following setbacks in the timetable for the construction of the project due to complications brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and other contributing internal factors. Prior

to this development, the project’s Engineering, Procurement, and Construction Contractor, J.V. Angeles Construction Corporation had full responsibility for the construction works. With Apo Agua in the lead, it would aggressively pursue as many construction work streams as possible, in parallel with each other, as the main catch-up strategy. Despite a very tight timetable, Apo Agua targets project completion by the end of 2022, considering a swift and seamless transition.

City still struggling to convince Dabawenyos to get vaccinated By MAYA M. PADILLO

T

he city government of Davao is still facing the challenge of enticing people to get vaccinated and is utilizing various strategies to convince residents to get vaccinated. The urgency is even more imperative as the school season is about to start. Dr. Michelle Schlosser, spokesperson of the Davao City Covid-19 Task Force, announced that vaccinees are treated with raffles and giveaways at the People’s Park vaccination site. “We have pa raffle and giveaways for lucky individuals,” Schlosser said. The city government of Davao is also engaging the Barangay Health Emergency Response Teams (BHERTs) for a community drive. The BHERTs have been deployed to announce the fixed vaccination site and mobile vaccination schedules at the district health offices to the barangay constituents. “BHERTS will disseminate the message and inform the public. I am a believer that barangay officials have direct interaction

with the community. We will equip them as champions of spreading the benefit of the vaccine. Murag nabuhat na nato ang tanan pakulo na maisip dinhi sa Davao City so that we can invite people. All we have to do is to continue those strategies,” she said. Schlosser reminded the public of the importance of getting vaccinated for an additional layer of protection against Covid-19. “Ang pagpa bakuna is good enough to keep our community, our country healthy and further open our economy for recovery. Kami sa health cluster dili namo kaya with our effort lang, we really need the efforts of everyone and the effort that we are asking you is to have yourselves vaccinated para protektado mo, inyong pamilya, ug komunidad,” she said. Schlosser reported that as of July 29, 2022, a total

of 96 cases were recorded putting Davao City at 15 percent positivity rate. “The only acceptable positivity rate is 5 percent. I hope this will serve as a strong reminder sa tanang katawhan naa gihapon ang Covid-19 and need yourself vaccinated para protektado whether we like it or not ‘pak one pak all’ gyud ta diri sa Davao City and other neighboring LGUs,” she said. For the past weeks, there are a total of 272 active cases plus 239 cases covering July 17 to 23, 2022. “Medyo nakuhaan na kay naay recovery but with the number of cases nga naa ta ug madungagan gyud ni siya,” she said. She reported that there are five deaths recorded covering the period July 17 to 23, 2022 and among the deaths, two were unvaccinated and three vaccinated without booster doses. “We are emphasizing importante gyud ang booster because just like any other vaccines naga-wane ang iyahang efficacy, therefore we need to boost it,” she said.

Food Panda yet to receive ‘illegal dismissal’ decision

F

ood Panda Philippines is yet to receive a copy of the decision of the National Labor Relations Commission (NLRC) favoring “illegally dismissed” delivery riders in Davao City. “We are aware of reports circulating on the purported Decision of the National Labor Relations Commission (NLRC) Davao City regarding the claims of former partner delivery freelancers in Davao City. At present, we have yet to receive a copy of the decision said to have been issued by the NLRC,” Food Panda said in an emailed statement. This is concerning the decision of NLRC Regional Arbitration Branch No. 11 dated June 30, 2022, signed by NLRC Labor Arbiter Rovyne G. Jumao-as, ordering Food Panda Philippines Inc. to pay the riders who are also the

complainants namely Edmund Deala Carrilo, Francis Ghlenn Suplag Costan, Nerjhun Habagat Claramon, Manuel Dolendo Lapiña, Roberto Jabines Gonzaga, Jeffrey Batingan Cabusas, and Nawar Sarip Solaiman their full back wages and separation pay amounting to P2,223,446.83. Last year, about 300 Food Panda riders conducted a protest on Roxas Avenue, Davao City, against the company due to the following reasons: sudden termination, wrong or unfair determination of salary, and their call for a higher wage amidst these challenging times. In its decision, NLRC also declared all of the complainants as regular employees of Food Panda Philippines Inc. and to be entitled to attorney’s fees and ordered the food

delivery firm to pay them their respective attorney’s fees with a total of P222,346.68. Meanwhile, Food Panda vowed to continue the dialogues that it has been holding with its active “Ka Panda” partner delivery freelancers to discuss their concerns. “In recent weeks especially, we have worked closely with our Ka Pandas to address their concerns regarding fuel price hikes, and have been supporting them to augment their earnings through additional incentives in their quests, fuel discounts from our partner providers, and facilitating increased tipping through our app. We are thankful to our Ka Pandas across the country for continuing to be valued freelance partners in serving our partner vendors and end-users,” it said. ATTY. CINDY ILAGAN-CAYCO IBP DAVAO CORNER

Dear IBP,

Magandang araw!

Yes, you have a right over the custody of your child. Basing on

your word “kinakasama” I am assuming that you are not legally married to the late father of your child, therefore your child is illegitimate. According to the Family Code, an illegitimate child is should be under the sole custody and parental authority of the mother. Hence, a mother is entitled to the sole parental authority of their illegitimate child despite the father’s recognition. A mother is therefore entitled to keep their illegitimate child in her company and under her parental authority. The Court will not deprive a mother of custody the child, unless there is any imperative cause showing that the mother is unfit to exercise such authority and care. Parents of the minor child

shall have the right to custody over their children. The right of custody accorded to parents springs from the exercise of parental authority. In your case, unless it is proven that you are unfit mother, the sole custody of the child is yours. What you can do is file a petition for rightful custody of a minor child with the Family Court of the province or city where you are residing or where your minor child may be found. Upon the filing of the verified answer or the expiration of the period to file it, the court may order a social worker to make a case study of the minor and the parties and to submit a report and recommendation to the court. Aside from filing a petition for rightful custody of a minor child,

the person having the right to custody may also file a petition for habeas corpus. A verified petition for a writ of habeas corpus involving custody of minors shall be filed with the Family Court where the minor resides. The petition for writ of habeas corpus may be resorted to in cases where the rightful custody of any person is withheld from the person entitled thereto. In custody cases involving minors, the writ of habeas corpus is prosecuted for the purpose of determining the right of custody over a minor child. The “best interest of the child” is a standard applicable to all custody cases. In awarding custody, the court shall consider the best interests of the minor child and shall give ultimate con-

sideration to his/her benefit and welfare. The best interests of the minor child refer to the totality of the circumstances and conditions as are most congenial to the survival, protection, and feelings of security of the child encouraging to his physical, psychological and emotional development. It also means the least detrimental available alternative for safeguarding the growth and development of the minor. The law protects the right of a mother towards her illegitimate child. For as long as you can prove that you are not unfit and therefore able to take care of your child to his/her best interest, then the law is on your side. We hope that we were able to help and good luck!

HENRYLITO D. TACIO THINK ON THESE!

MONKEYPOX: ANOTHER COVID-19 IN THE MAKING? Is monkeypox another coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the making? Health authorities hope it won’t be but the World Health Organization (WHO) has already declared it a global emergency.. “For all of these reasons, I have decided that the global monkeypox outbreak represents a public health emergency of international concern,” Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, announced last July 23. Monkeypox is the third active public health emergency of international concern: COVID-19 still tops the list with polio trailing behind. On September 19, 2019, an outbreak of polio was declared in the Philippines. According to Dr. Tedros, the current risk of monkeypox is moderate globally. “There is also a clear risk of further international spread, although the risk of interference with international traffic remains low for the moment,” he said. Currently, there are more than 16,000 reported cases from 75 countries and territories and five deaths. Some 81 children under the age of 17 were reported as having been infected globally with most cases being among

young men, with the median age being 37. Monkeypox is a viral zoonosis, a virus transmitted to humans from animals. Various animal species have been identified as susceptible to monkeypox virus. This includes rope squirrels, tree squirrels, Gambian pouched rats, dormice, non-human primates, and other species. “The natural reservoir of monkeypox has not yet been identified, though rodents are the most likely,” the WHO said. “Eating inadequately cooked meat and other animal products of infected animals is a possible risk factor.” How will you know a person has monkeypox? “Symptoms of monkeypox can be very similar to those experienced by smallpox patients, although they are less clinically severe, albeit visually dramatic, with raised pustules and fever in the most severe cases that can last from two to four weeks,” the WHO says. According to the UN health agency, the recent monkeypox outbreak has been transmitted primarily by close skin-to-skin contact, although the virus can also be passed by breath droplets

and contaminated bedding. The incubation period of monkeypox is usually from six to 13 days but can range from five to 21 days. “We don’t yet have the information as to whether (the monkeypox virus) would be transmitted through body fluids,” Dr. Rosamund Lewis, WHO technical lead on monkeypox, told journalists in a press conference. First identified in monkeys, the virus is transmitted chiefly through close contact with an infected person. “At the moment the outbreak is still concentrated in groups of men who have sex with men in some countries, but that is not the case everywhere,” said Dr. Lewis. “It is really important to appreciate also that stigma and discrimination can be very damaging and as dangerous as any virus itself.” The WHO explained that although most cases of infection have been linked primarily to men who have sex with men, this is probably because they are more proactive in seeking healthcare advice than others. The disease “can affect anyone and (it) is not associated with any particular group of people,” Dr. Lewis reminded.

Complications of monkeypox can include secondary infections, bronchopneumonia, sepsis, encephalitis, and infection of the cornea with ensuing loss of vision, the WHO said. “The case fatality ratio of monkeypox has historically ranged from 0 to 11% in the general population and has been higher among young children,” the WHO said. “In recent times, the case fatality ratio has been around 3-6%.” The clinical differential diagnosis that must be considered includes other rash illnesses, such as chickenpox, measles, bacterial skin infections, scabies, syphilis, and medication-associated allergies. Lymphadenopathy during the prodromal stage of illness can be a clinical feature to distinguish monkeypox from chickenpox or smallpox. “If monkeypox is suspected, health workers should collect an appropriate sample and have it transported safely to the laboratory with appropriate capability,” the WHO pointed out. “Confirmation of monkeypox depends on the type and quality of the specimen and the type of laboratory test. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is the preferred laboratory test

given its accuracy and sensitivity.” In the past, vaccination against smallpox provided protection against monkeypox. But people younger than 40 to 50 years of age today, according to WHO, “may be more susceptible to monkeypox infection as smallpox vaccination campaigns ended globally after the disease was eradicated in 1980.” In the Philippines, the Vaccine Expert Panel said vaccines for monkeypox remain limited. A report said that “only smallpox and a recently-developed ‘live-attenuated’ vaccine for monkeypox are for the moment approved to fight the viral disease.” In a televised briefing, expert panel head Dr. Nina Gloriani said: “Ang monkeypox and smallpox are under one family… (Ang vaccine para dito) ay hindi available for the general population. Kulang din ang stockpile niya.” Last July 27, the health department announced the country first monkeypox case. Even before that, it has already working with international health agencies to secure monkeypox vaccines. “When someone is vaccinated it takes several weeks for the immune response to be generated by the body,” Dr. Lewis said.

Private sector plays vital role in digital transformation: DTI

D

epartment of Trade and Industry (DTI) Alfredo Pascual said the private sector has a crucial role to play in accelerating the adoption of digital technology in the country.

In an event in Taguig City Thursday, Pascual reiterated that digital transformation is part of the Marcos administration’s eight-point economic agenda. “In his State of the Nation Address this Monday, President Marcos laid out his economic plans for the country, emphasizing the importance of creating an

enabling environment for the country’s digital transformation,” he said. The DTI chief said the government’s digital transformation agenda pushes for digital payments, digital financial services, and enabling market regulations to build trust and data transfer to provide more opportunities for individu-

als and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). “I believe the government will not be able to achieve its digital transformation goals on its own. The private sector, with its agile mindset and disposition has to play a key role, particularly in implementing the digital transformation of enterprises, both large and small as well as government itself,” Pascual said. He added the private sector will set the direction and pace of digital transformation in the

country. On the other hand, Pascual said the government has issued policies to encourage and enable investments in digital technology, which include Executive Order 170 s. 2022, or the Adoption of Digital Payments for Government Disbursements and Collections and Commission on Audit Circular No. 2021-014, or the Guidelines on the Use of e-Collection and e-Payment for Government Transactions. “Collaboration be-

Toyota leads global sales from Jan-June for 3rd year in a row

T

he Toyota Motor Corp. group is certain to lead global auto sales in the first half of 2022, topping the list ahead of German rival Volkswagen AG for the third straight year, amid a global chip shortage and Covid-19 lockdowns in China, industry data showed Thursday. The Japanese automaker said it sold roughly 5.14 million vehicles globally in the reporting period, including those sold by the group’s mini-vehicle maker Daihatsu Motor Co. and truck manufacturer Hino Motors Ltd., down 6 percent from a year earlier, marking the first drop in two years. The fall in sales stemmed from the reduced global output, which declined 3.8 percent to 5.1 million units, also shrinking for the first time in two years, although it managed to limit the impact of the semiconductor shortage that has dealt a blow to automakers worldwide. Toyota’s global sales surpassed that of rival Volkswagen, whose global sales plunged 22.2 percent to 3.88 million vehicles in the

reporting period. “Sales volume has never been our top priority,” a Toyota official said after the release of its results. “We will continue to prioritize safety and quality and strive to make better cars.” Impacted largely by the parts shortage, Toyota’s domestic sales plunged 18.1 percent to 954,173 units, with domestic output shedding 17.7 percent to 1.74 million units, as many cars produced in Japan incorporate cutting-edge componentry that relies on semiconductors. Overseas sales dropped 2.8 percent to 4.18 million vehicles, but overseas production grew 5.6 percent to 3.35 million units, registering a record high for the first half-year period, thanks to expanded production capacity in China. The automaker’s global sales in June, excluding those of Daihatsu and Hino, fell 3.2 percent from a year earlier to 817,321 units. Its global production dropped 4.6 percent to 793,378 cars. BSP pegs this month’s inflation at 5.6 to 6.4% Rising income to boost food, groceries delivery in PH

F

ood and groceries delivery is expected to grow further even if movement restrictions have been eased as disposable income and urbanization in the Philippines are projected to sustain their expansion. In a report dated July 28, Fitch Solutions Country Risk and Industry Research said delivery services, particularly for basic necessities, grew exponentially during the pandemic after government lockdowns to address the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19). This made retailers adopt delivery options among their offerings to remain competitive, it said. “We believe that these dynamics have been key to the development of the sector in Asia, without which, would have taken far longer to develop,” it added. The report said food and grocery delivery service providers continue to enhance their services and transport network –a major factor that prevented the strong expansion of electronic commerce (e-commerce) pre-pandemic.

“Post-Covid, industry players have continued to refine their offerings, while the number of first-time users will continue to use the service, as they acknowledge its convenience and delivery service will become more efficient and user-friendly,” it said. The report said the rise of disposable household income in the country is a plus to the growth of food and groceries delivery. It forecasts average household disposable income to grow by 9.3 percent year-on-year to around PHP413,900 this year and at an average of about 8.4 percent annually from 2022-2026 to around PHP567,900. While inflation continues to rise and is forecast to average at about 5.6 percent this year, it added, the growth of disposable income is expected to outpace this. “This means consumers in the Philippines will see their disposable incomes increasing in real terms. We believe that real growth in

T

he Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) is expecting this month’s inflation to further quicken with the upper end of its forecast range seen to exceed last month’s print. In its month-ahead forecast, the Central Bank said July inflation is seen to settle within the range of 5.6% to 6.4%. The upper end of the BSP forecast is faster than the 6.1% inflation —the rate of increase in the prices of goods and services— recorded in June, the fastest print since the 6.9% recorded in October 2018 and the same reading seen in November 2018. “Inflation for the month was driven by the contin-

ued increase in food prices, further transport fare hikes, and peso depreciation,” the BSP said. “Meanwhile, lower oil prices, reduction in electricity rates in Meralco-serviced areas, and lower pork prices are likely to temper in part said price pressures,” it said. The central bank will continue to closely monitor emerging price developments to enable timely intervention to arrest emergence of further sec-

ond-round effects, consistent with BSP’s mandate of price and financial stability. BSP Governor Felipe Medalla earlier signaled that the BSP will continue its monetary policy tightening cycle to keep inflation in check after the US central bank delivered a huge interest rate hike of 75 basis points. Monetary policy or interest rates are among the tools used by central banks to stabilize inflation through controlling money supply by raising borrowing costs. Higher borrowing costs could make consumers and businesses spend less, therefore reducing eco-

nomic activity or lowering demand and eventually lowering prices. This month, the BSP delivered a hawkish 75 basis points increase in key policy rates, bringing the overnight reverse repurchase facility to 3.25%, overnight deposit facility at 2.75%, and overnight lending facility at 3.75%. The latest hikes bring the policy rates back to their pre-pandemic levels, or those seen in February 2020. This is also the most aggressive rate hike of the BSP so far since the interest rate corridor was implemented in June 2016, and the first off-cycle adjustment since April 2020.

Shopee, Shopee Xpress partner with Whisper and World Vision to empower young women to #Share The Confidence

MANILA, JULY 28, 2022 - Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, recently launched the #ShareTheConfidence campaign in partnership with Whisper and World Vision, to educate Filipinos on the importance of menstrual hygiene management. This initiative is part of Shopee Bayanihan, the company’s umbrella CSR arm that seeks to provide support for communities in need through partnerships

with various humanitarian organizations. As part of the campaign, Whisper pledged to match and donate sanitary products for every Whisper product sold on Shopee from May 28 to June 30. Almost 130,000 young women from World Vision’s partner communities all over the Philippines benefitted from the initiative and received sanitary products through the delivery efforts of Shopee Xpress, Shopee’s

logistics arm. Apart from raising awareness on proper menstrual hygiene management, the #ShareTheConfidence campaign also aimed to break the stigma around menstrual health and address the issue of period poverty in the Philippines. Last July 22, Shopee and its partners culminated the #ShareTheConfidence campaign with an on-site event in Laurel, Batangas to turn over Whisper sanitary pads to over 85,000 beneficiaries

within the area. Martin Yu, Director at Shopee Philippines, shared “Everything we do at Shopee goes back to our main mission of serving the underserved through our technology. We are humbled to partner with Whisper and World Vision to empower Filipinas in need. We look forward to maximizing our platform to deliver even more meaningful initiatives that will benefit communities all over the Philippines.”

Total global sales by the eight major Japanese automakers, also including Subaru Corp., Mazda Motor Corp., Mitsubishi Motors Corp., and Daihatsu declined 11.4 percent in the six months from a year before to 11.63 million units. Their total global production was down 6 percent to 11.56 million vehicles. (Kyodo)

achieved a historic recovery in the past 18 months and posted the fastest single-year decline in unemployment. Recession fears also heighten worries of weakening demand. “High food and energy costs around the world continue to temper consumption. Road fuel sales in the UK are waning

again, while gasoline demand remains below its five-year average for this time of the year. Jet fuel demand is also weak, with the number of commercial flights about 14% less than the pre-pandemic levels in 2019,” Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ) commodity strategist Daniel Hynes said in an e-mail. RISING... FROMA2 income levels of Filipino consumers compliments the retail formalization trend in the Philippines, as consumers gain more access to modern MGR (mass grocery retail) as their propensity to spend rises,” it said. Also, urbanization is expected to further increase the market for delivery services and e-commerce. The report forecasts that around 50.9 percent of Filipinos would be living in

urban areas by 2030, higher compared to the around 48 percent this year. It said urban areas have the factors that will boost food and grocery services – large number of households with higher disposable income, developed logistics, and people with technical skills and hardware to access e-commerce platforms. The report cited Filipinos’ rising preference for healthier food options, espe-

cially those from the middle to high income segments. “These households are likely to be more conscious of the health benefits of their food choices and have greater bandwidth when considering their dietary choices as they trade up price points for premium and healthier food options,” it said. Citing latest available data, the report said fresh and preserved fruits and dairy, which are forecast

to grow by 8.6 percent and 8.3 percent in the medium term, respectively, are the two fastest growing categories under the food index. It said importation value of fresh fruits and nuts has risen to around USD736.9 million in 2021 from around USD27.3 million in 2002. “These two categories underpin our view that Filipino consumers are increasingly spending more on healthier foods,” it added. Zion Williamson reportedly tipped the scales at over 130 kilograms last year while injured with pundits across the NBA having their say on the size of the Pelicans forward.

Williamson’s eye-watering contract weight clause

Z

ion Williamson’s whopping contract extension has one very surprising clause that quickly sent social media into a spin with Williamson’s name trending worldwide. The New Orleans Pelicans star has failed to deliver on his other-worldly talents since he entered the league due to injuries and weight battles. Williamson missed the entirety of the 2021/22

season due to a foot injury and has only managed to compile a total of 85 games across three seasons. Unfortunately Williamson’s weight has been a hot topic of conversa-

tion since he first burst onto the scene and has only continued to build throughout his NBA career. Despite his struggles, the Pelicans put their faith in him by offering a fiveyear contract extension worth an eye-watering $A275 million. But one particular clause within the contract caught the eye of the bas-

ketball world, with Williamson’s weight under the microscope. The clause indicates the Pelicans can subtract money from Williamson’s contract if the sum of his weight and body fat percentage is above 295 pounds, as reported by Christian Clark of Nola. com. Of course within the contract lies clauses

which could elevate Williamson’s from $A275m all the way up to $328m. Williamson reportedly tipped the scales at over 130 kilograms last year while injured with pundits across the NBA having their say on the size of the Pelicans forward. NBA legend Charles Barkley said he was “really concerned” about Williamson’s weight. He said

of Williamson’s current appearance: “It looks like me and Shaq (Shaquille O’Neal) had a baby,” Barkley said. Last month however Williamson put the league on notice when he showed of his freakish frame, Williamson looked more like he was ready to line up as a defensive linesman in the NFL rather than stepping onto the hardwood.

Dellavedova signs new deal, returns to the NBA with Kings

M

atthew Dellavedova is heading back to America. The Australian basketball star, who played a key role in the Boomers’ drought-breaking bronze medal-winning performance at last year’s Tokyo Olympics, has signed a deal with the Sacramento Kings. According to US reports, the deal is for one year. Dellavedova won an NBA championship alongside LeBron James at the Cleveland Cavaliers and also played for the Milwaukee Bucks, before returning home to Australia in 2021 to link up with Melbourne United in the NBL.

The Kings struggled last season, missing the playoffs for the 16th straight time after finishing with a 30-52 record. Luke Walton was fired as head coach during the campaign and has since been replaced by Mike Brown — who coached Dellavedova at Cleveland when the Victorian first entered the NBA. The Aussie star was named in the All-NBL second team last season, helping guide United to the top of the ladder after 28 home-and-away games. However, Melbourne lost to newcomers the Tasmanian JackJumpers before the Sydney Kings went on to claim the title.

He said once they manifest symptoms [Covid-19] in their places of origin, they cannot come to Davao. “The Execom required the City Health Office (CHO) to deploy its staff in the billeting areas. Each billeting area will have an isolation

Kai Sotto returns to Adelaide 76ers

K

ai Sotto will be making his return to Australia’s National Basketball League (NBL), again suiting up for the Adelaide 36ers.

The 7-foot Pinoy posted an Instagram picture of himself wearing his 36ers jersey with the caption: “Lets run it back @adelaide36ers !!! #year2” Adelaide coach CJ Bruton confirmed the news on Aussie Hoopla Podcast as picked up by the NBL’s website. “He is, he is (returning),” Bruton said. Sotto still has two years left in his contract with the 36ers, with his third year being a team option. He is returning to the team after being left out in the recent NBA draft. Bruton and the 36ers remained supportive of Sotto’s NBA hopes. Kai Sotto admits frustration after missing the NBA cut “Everyone has thoughts and dreams and Kai’s dream is to get to the

NBA,” Bruton said. “I thought he was two years away from doing that. Clearly he put his name in and he couldn’t get it out. Sotto played a total of 23 games in his first NBL season, averaging 7.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 0.7 blocks per game. He also went 51 percent from the field and 39 percent from the perimeter. Bruton said Sotto’s focus should be on his steady improvement while helping his team win. “Right now it’s focusing on, ‘how do you help the 36ers and get yourself back in a spot that now everyone’s looking at you, you’re ready now?” said the coach.

After a failed NBA Draft, Kai Sotto is returning to the Adelaide 76ers in Australia’s NBL.
