On the sidelines of an economic forum organized by the Economic Journal ists Association of the Phil ippines and the San Miguel Corp. on Wednesday at the Ayuntamiento de Manila, Balisacan said the biggest challenge for the country’s sugar sector is the insuffi cient volume in the domes tic market.Balisacan said the cause of the rising sugar prices in the country is the insufficiency of the supply as the economy expands. “There’s an ongoing ex ercise right now because we are preparing some papers —some strategic paper(s) for addressing this kind of issue,” he told reporters.Balisacan, who is also the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) director general, said the government needs to sit down with sugar planters and industry play ers to have a “clear picture” of the gap on supply and demand of sugar. “We need to see what the production potential of our sugar industry vis-à-vis the demand. Obviously, the demand for sugar is quite elastic, meaning it grows with the economy. So total requirements, total vol ume is likely to rise. So the question is: Can the pro duction catch up with the demand?” he added. Balisacan said stake holders should look into the capability of sugar pro ducers if they are still able to expand their farming land and if they are using high-yield plant varieties “to give confidence that productivity is going to rise” as farming land has not increased much be cause of other demands for land.Asked if NEDA is in fa vor of sugar importation, Balisacan said it should be allowed if available local supply could not meet the demand.

Recently, Ireland Ambassa dor William John Carlos togeth er with his wife, Irene Collete, paid a courtesy call to Davao City Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte when they visited the country’s biggest city in terms of land area. In a press conference after the said visit, Duterte told the Davao press that the Irish en voy said to him that Davao and Ireland have sort of the same culture.Edge Davao’s Maya Padil lo quoted Duterte as saying: “Very appreciative sila sa cul ture kay makita daw niya ang resemblance sa culture sa Irish ug Dabawenyos like our ethnic tribes, na impress siya ug gana hanButsiya.”more importantly, Davao City has a potential as tourism destinations for the Irish peo ple. “Gusto sila mag-explore,” Duterte pointed out. Davao City, indeed, has sev eral tourist destinations which Irish people could enjoy. Let me share some of these places: Eden Nature Park and Re sort: There are so many things you can do in this 80-hect are resort (with 100,000 pine trees) located in barangay Eden in Toril District and is 3,000 feet above sea level. If adventure is your thing, there are several activities you can do: Skyrider, Skycycle, Sky swing, and horseback riding. You can also do fishing at its Fishing Village. There are sev eral places where you can eat: Vista Restaurant, Fisher’s Grill, Café Vista and Skyview Café. Davao Crocodile Park: If you are fascinated with crocodiles –both freshwater and saltwater species – then this is the place to visit. It showcases a “state of the art” crocodile farming system equipped with modern facilities and equipment. You can also find different species of birds, monkeys, snakes and otherD’Bonereptiles.Collector Museum: Another one and only in the Philippines, where a collection of bones and skeletons of an imals (including the 41-foot Sperm Whale) from the coun try and other parts of the world are displayed in a three-storey building.Malagos Garden Resort: A reputable agri-tourism re sort set on 12-hectare grounds where families can discover experiences refined by nature. It has everything a family and group can hope for. Among those they can enjoy are: inter active bird shows, bird watching sessions, and new landscapes with beautiful koi fishponds. Don’t forget to visit the Mala gos Chocolate Museum, the first and only in the country. Mindanao ChinaTown: A collection of restaurants, shops, businesses, and malls – mostly by Chinese Filipinos who hold on strong to their Chinese roots – spread out over a total land area of 44 hectares and part of four barangays. Don’t forget to have a picture of yourself in one of its entrance gates – a traditional bright red Chinese archway with a shingled roof –which are inspired by a pailou or paifang.People’s Park: If New York has Central Park, Davao has this park where visitors can be with nature. Built in 2007 during the mayorship of Rodrigo R. Dute rte, the 4-hectare park has an environ of a tropical forest with ponds, waterfalls, and shady trees all over. It is considered “the cleanest and greenest park in thePhilippinecountry.”Eagle Center: Not far from Malagos Garden Resort is this 8.4-hectare area. It is pri marily a conservation breeding facility for the endangered bird icon and other birds of prey. San Pedro Cathedral: This famous landmark, a Span ish-style cathedral, is one of the oldest churches in Mindanao. It is known for its distinctive modern design frontal-curved solid structure. Not far from it, just by walking, you can find the City Hall, the seat of the mayor. Now if you are hungry vis iting those places, you can also eat anywhere in the city. Among the most popular eating places include Mixed Temptation Chi nese, Davao Lounge, Tiny Kitch en, Marina Tuna, Rekado, Ahfat Seafood Plaza, Blue Post’s Boil ing Crabs and Shrimps, Yellow Fin, Majid’s Kabab, and Ellen’s Tuna Queen, Coco’s. Of course, there’s the fa mous Night Market at Roxas Avenue. Just don’t bring back packs when you go there. There are plenty of plac es where you can stay for the night. Among the high-end ho tels are the following: Acacia Hotel, Seda Abreeza, Water front Insular, Blue Lotus, The Pinnacle Hotel and Suites, Apo View, and Park Inn by Radisson. You can also stay at these places: Hostel 153, Red Planet, Go Hotels Lanang, Red Knight Gardens, Casa Letecia, Home Crest, and Crown Regency Res idences.Fora shopping spree, go to the following: SM (one in Ecol and and another in Lanang), Gaisano Mall, Abreeza, Victoria Plaza, and NCCC.

Then a key southern ec clesial mission of the Jesuits during Spanish time, Daliao, under American rule, was re ported in the 1903 census, the first under western direction, as a thriving small settlement of 232 ‘civilized population.’ It was classified as a barrio and was known for its hemp rice, corn, and coconut crops. In the 1918 census, its number of in habitants grew to 764. 1903 is also a big date in the community’s exciting history. That year, Capt. James Burch field, a retired US military officer, opened Daliao Planta tion Company, the first Amer ican-owned abaca estate in Davao. It was also the arrival of the first Japanese workhands in the city. Later, the 110-hect are plantation, once carved out of a jungle, was sold in 1914 for a huge profit to Japanese investors, the first transaction of its kind in the region. Burchfield, who eventual ly bought the Luneta Hotel in Manila from the proceeds of the sale of his first plantation, also owned another farm stead in Daliao named after his American home state. He called it Kentucky Ranch. After selling his Manila investment, he opened another agricultur al estate at Piso, Banaybanay, DavaoOrthographicallyOriental. and et ymologically, Daliao is one of 127 banana and plantain va rieties that underwent trial study during the early Ameri can period. There is, however, a dearth of literature related to the research, especially on the commercial viability of the fruit as a cash crop. With the launch of the Fu rukawa Plantation in the sec ond decade of American rule, which was part of the old Burchfield estate, Daliao be came the second biggest Jap anese investment site after Mintal, the home base of Kyos aburo Ohta, the pioneering impresario. Given its growing status in the hemp industry, Yoshizo Furukawa, owner of the estate bearing his name, opened a wharf at what is now the hamlet of Pantalan, that would rival those in Mati and Malita.Other historical accounts show that on April 10, 1906, when Juan de la Cruz was the justice of the peace (judge) of the barrio, Daliao’s planted rice fields were destructively consumed by locusts. In 1917, its municipal cemetery, along with the burial sites in Sirawan and Talomo, was opened. That same year, Daliao school kids undertook physical exams from the Bureau of Health Service personnel. And, on November 10, 1919, cholera infection was reported in the area. During the liberation of Davao, Daliao was one of those that suffered heavy damage. Gregory G. Fletcher, in ‘In trepid Aviators’ (2012) wrote that U.S. Air Group 18 led two bombing raids of the Japanese air base at Daliao, adding that almost every torpedo-bomb er crew of VT-18 contributed to the daylong action over the area. The target of the aerial bomb runs is the bunker near the wharf, with a shell of its old self still surviving to this day at SitioOnPantalan.January 24, 1948, the capital shares of stock of Dali ao Plantation Company were transferred from the Philippine Alien Property Administrator, a US agency, to President Man uel A. Roxas, on behalf of the Philippine government, for P2, the equal of an American dol lar at the time.
